*Fischy Music, founded as a charitable trust in 1998, works with around 20,000 people every year, mainly with primary-aged children in school and community groups around the UK. They have produced some ground-breaking songs which help both children and adults manage their uncomfortable emotions. They have partnered with Seasons for Growth in creating resources for their grief and loss programme and have worked with a wide range of other partners including Sunflower Garden, The Butterfly Project, Place to Be, Families Outside, TACT Foster Care, Seamab School and numerous local councils through the child and maternal health department of the Scottish Government. Based on the idea that “Words make you think a thought; music makes you feel a feeling” (E.Y. Harburg), Fischy Music will be helping delegates explore the parallels between the uncertainty of the creative space and palliative care, as well as celebrating 40 years of St Columba’s Hospice. conference speakers Dr Catherine Calderwood Dr Catherine Calderwood qualified from Cambridge and Glasgow universities. As a junior doctor she worked in medical specialities in Glasgow Royal infirmary and at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh before completing her specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology and maternal medicine in south east Scotland and at St Thomas’ Hospital London. She became a medical adviser to Scottish Government in 2010. Catherine launched her first annual report as Chief Medical Officer for Scotland in January 2016 which focuses on ‘realistic medicine’ and challenges modern medicine to rethink priorities. It has been universally well received amongst doctors, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics and AHPs and read across the world. It also recognizes the importance of valuing and supporting staff as vital to improving outcomes for the people in our care.

Dr Derek Doyle Dr Derek Doyle joined the team planning St Columba’s Hospice at its first meeting, chaired by the famous and much respected Lord Birsay, and was appointed its first Medical Director in 1977. Since then, and well into his retirement years, he has promoted hospice and palliative care in almost all the countries of Europe, as well as North America, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, where he started his professional life as a Church of Scotland missionary surgeon. He has held six visiting professorships. He was the first Editor of the journal Palliative Medicine, Senior Editor of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine, lead negotiator for palliative medicine to be a full medical specialty, first Chairman of the Association for Palliative Medicine, First Vice-Chairman of the National Council for Palliative Care, and is still Honorary President of the Scottish Partnership for Palliative Care. He has written extensively on hospice and palliative care and the history of medicine.

Professor Brendan McCormack Professor Brendan McCormack’s internationally recognised work in person-centred practice development and research has resulted in successful long term collaborations in Ireland, the UK, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia and South Africa. His writing and research work focuses on person-centred practice, gerontological nursing, and practice development and he serves on a number of editorial boards, policy committees, funding panels and development groups in these areas. He has a particular focus on the use of arts and creativity in healthcare research and development. Brendan has more than 600 published outputs, including 180 peerreviewed publications and 10 books. He is the Editor Emeritus of the International Journal of Older People Nursing. Brendan is a Fellow of The European Academy of Nursing Science. In 2014 he was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, awarded the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame by Sigma Theta Tau International and listed in the Thomson Reuters 3,000 most influential researchers globally. He is currently in the top 100 most cited nurse researchers globally. In 2015 he was recognized as an Inspirational Nursing Leader by Nursing Times (UK nursing magazine) and in 2016 made a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Professor Philip J Larkin Professor Philip J Larkin has worked in palliative care in Ireland since 1992. In 2008 he was appointed Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing (Palliative Care), and is Director of Clinical Academic Partnership UCD School of Nursing & Midwifery and Health Systems & Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services in Dublin. Philip has been President of the European Association of Palliative Care (EAPC) since 2015; he was Vice-President 2003-2007.

Chair of All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC), he is recognised for his European and international work, Philip received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Macmillan Cancer Support and the International Journal of Palliative Nursing in 2007. Philip was a Fulbright Scholar to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in 2014 where he undertook research into compassion in palliative care.

Dr Jo Hockley Dr Jo Hockley trained as a nurse at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in the early 1970s and has worked in specialist palliative care for over 20 years. She has had a passion for disseminating palliative care knowledge within generalist settings. During her career she has set up two hospital-based palliative care teams (one in London and one in Edinburgh). Since 2000, and as a result of her PhD, Jo has worked exclusively in research and quality improvement initiatives involving the development of palliative care in care homes. In 2008, she set up a care home project team to reach out to over 100 care homes within which some innovative research projects were undertaken. Jo has published widely both on the strategic development of hospital-based palliative care teams and palliative care for older people in care homes. She has recently been awarded an OBE for her contribution to palliative care nursing. Jo returned to Edinburgh in August 2014 and is currently working in the Centre for Population Health Sciences within the Primary Palliative Care Research Group at the University of Edinburgh, undertaking a feasibility study for establishing a teaching/research-based care home centre.

Professor Allan Kellehear Professor Allan Kellehear is Academic Director of the Digital Health Enterprise Zone and a 50th Anniversary Professor (End-of-Life Care) at the University of Bradford, UK. He is a medical and public health sociologist and has written extensively on the human experience of dying and public health approaches to palliative care. Examples of this work include The Inner Life of the Dying Person (2014), A Social History of Dying (2007), Compassionate Cities: Public Health and End-of-Life Care (2005) and Health Promoting Palliative Care (1999).

In recent years he has extended and illustrated his public health ideas collaboratively with colleagues in edited volumes such as Compassionate Communities: Case studies from Britain and Europe (with Wegleitner and Heimerl in 2016) and International Perspectives on Public Health and Palliative Care (with Sallnow and Kumar in 2012). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, President of the Association for the Study of Death and Society (ASDS) and President of Public Health Palliative Care International (PHPCI).

Professor Nathan Cherny Professor Nathan Cherny studied medicine at Monash University Medical School where he graduated in 1983 with high distinction. He completed his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians attaining specialist recognition in both oncology and palliative medicine. In 1994 Prof Cherny joined with Prof Raphael Catane to establish the Oncology and Palliative Medicine Unit at the Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.

The model and standards for integrated oncology and palliative care developed by Prof Cherny and Prof Catane have since served as the basis for the designation criteria for the ESMO Designated Center program in Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care. He continues to head the Multidisciplinary Cancer Pain and Palliative Medicine Service at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, and he maintains an active practice in general oncology.

Prof Cherny has been an active member of the Middle East Cancer Consortium and works closely with Palestinian oncology colleagues. He lives in Jerusalem, Israel, and is a believer that health care provision can connect people and build bridges of understanding, humanity and shared purpose and that it can bring people closer to peaceful and respectful coexistence.

Dr Duncan Brown Dr Duncan Brown qualified at University of Glasgow and worked in a number of medical specialties, including haematology and respiratory, gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians. He entered palliative care by taking up the first palliative medicine research fellow post at Strathcarron Hospice, which led to an MD in cancer fatigue. He completed his higher specialist training in palliative medicine in south east Scotland, taking up a consultant post at St Columba’s Hospice in 2002. He became Medical Director at the Hospice in 2010. He balances a busy clinical role at the Hospice, and in East Lothian, with his senior management role, where he has been involved in the Hospice rebuild (completed 2014) and the exciting new Hospice five year strategy - Care and Compassion Matters.

Dr Barry Laird Dr Barry Laird graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1997 and completed higher specialist training in palliative medicine in 2009. During his training in palliative medicine he was awarded a NCRI SuPaC Fellowship.

He joined the academic palliative medicine department at the University of Edinburgh under Professor Marie Fallon, and completed his MD in cancer-induced bone pain and neuropathic cancer pain in 2009. He currently holds positions as a Clinician Scientist in Palliative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and a consultant in palliative medicine in St Columba’s Hospice. His research interests include cancer pain, cachexia, systemic inflammation, prognostication and mesothelioma (radiotherapy and palliation) and has published over 50 papers. He is the CI and PI of clinical trials in cancer symptomatology and treatment.

Dr Anna Lloyd Dr Anna Lloyd is a research fellow at St Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh. Anna gained BSc and MSc degrees in psychology after training as a registered nurse. She also holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh Centre for Population Health Sciences where she worked with the primary palliative care research group. Anna’s research interests include the application of qualitative research to understand the experience of complex interventions in palliative care, secondary qualitative analysis, person-centred care practices, community involvement in palliative care and in promoting good palliative and end of life care to those with non-cancer conditions including frail older people.

Professor Max Watson Professor Max Watson is a Palliative Medicine Consultant and visiting Professor at the University of Ulster. He chaired the RCGP (NI) End of Life Care Committee and is a Clinical Advisor to the Gold Standards Framework Programme in the UK. He has authored many books including the Oxford Handbook of Palliative Care and is series editor of the Oxford Specialist End of Life handbooks. Max’s research interests include cancer-related fatigue and cachexia, end of life care for people with dementia, generalist palliative care education, and improving palliative care in resource limited settings. Max worked in Nepal for eight years before completing palliative medicine training in London and Belfast. He has developed a range of teaching programmes in palliative care including the European Certificate in Essential Palliative Care (ECEPC) and the European Certificate in Holistic Dementia Care. He has taught and lectured extensively across the world. Max has recently been piloting the use of ECHO technology in Northern Ireland as a means of democratising medical knowledge and improving the delivery of palliative care in resource limited areas.

Dr Jeremy Keen Dr Jeremy Keen trained in Palliative Medicine in Edinburgh and Ottawa, before coming to work at St Columba’s Hospice as a Palliative Medicine Consultant. He has worked as a Consultant Physician in Palliative Care for Highland Hospice for the last 15 years and has been instrumental in expanding palliative care service into rural areas in the north of Scotland through the use of a virtual hospice.

vision The Vision for this conference As St Columba’s Hospice marks its 40th anniversary, we are delighted to welcome you to this conference. It is a unique opportunity to listen to and engage in dialogue with our speakers who are all internationally renowned leaders in the field of palliative care and person-centred care. The ethos of the conference is to explore how we can stay true to the essence of palliative and end of life care, as developed by Dame Cicely Saunders, and at the same time develop services within modern health care. All our speakers are engaging with clinical care, education and research in innovative ways to achieve this and will share their work.

40 Years of Care at St Columba’s Hospice Throughout 2017, St Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh is marking 40 years since we welcomed our first patients.

Of course, a huge amount of work took place before we opened to create a modern hospice for the city of Edinburgh. The initial meeting on 26 November 1968 brought together GPs, consultants, nurses and many other interested parties who together agreed there was a need for increased palliative care provision in the city.

Dr Derek Doyle and Anne Weatherill, together with this group of committed and determined people, worked for almost a decade in order to bring the idea to fruition.

Today, four decades later, St Columba’s Hospice has the same ethos – to provide the very best palliative care and support for the people of Edinburgh and the Lothians. As in that initial meeting, the Hospice continues to bring together those working in health and social care who want to provide person-centred care for individuals at the end of their life and their families.

The Vision for St Columba’s Hospice – what might the next 40 years bring?

Whilst St Columba’s Hospice remains committed to the original ethos of palliative and end of life care we continue to develop our services. Clinical services, education and research continue to be the cornerstones of our service. In 2015 we published our five year strategy with a core commitment to excellent clinical palliative care, research and education. We have strong links with both the University of Edinburgh and Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, in relation to education and research. We are proud to be a research active hospice and developed our five year research strategy to reflect the five key research themes we are prioritising.

partnerships Partnerships between universities and St Columba’s Hospice University of Edinburgh In 2007 St Columba’s Hospice endowed two new Professorial Chairs at University of Edinburgh. Professor Marie Fallon was awarded the St Columba’s Hospice Chair of Palliative Medicine and also works as an Honorary Consultant in Palliative Care at the Western General Hospital. She leads a large portfolio of multi-centre clinical trials in palliative care and a translational programme in both pain and cachexia. She funds her research unit through grants. She has an active PhD programme, with palliative medicine, neurology and anaesthetic trainees doing higher degrees. Since the establishment of the Chair, she has been primary supervisor of 10 higher degrees. Professor Fallon is a joint editor of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine (4th and 5th editions) and editor of the ABC of Palliative Care (two editions), the ABC of Pain and the Textbook of Cancer Pain. She is a member of the Advisory Board for Dimbleby Cancer Care, and the joint Dimbleby Cancer Care / Marie Curie Cancer Care Research Fund. Professor Fallon is a Co-Director of the European Centre for Palliative Care Research, Norway, and also a Visiting Professor for the European Palliative Care Research Centre.

Professor Scott Murray was awarded the St Columba’s Hospice Chair of Primary Palliative Care. The funding from St Columba’s Hospice has allowed him to develop a multidisciplinary team of researchers focusing on improving palliative care in the community as well as palliative care for patients with all life-limiting illnesses. This team received the University of Edinburgh Principal’s award in 2013 for the considerable impact they had made in disseminating their work in many settings and using various media. This group has also helped develop the Global Health Academy at the University of Edinburgh which has been successful in applying for many large grants to improve palliative care in many countries in Africa. Some staff members from St Columba’s Hospice have participated in these programmes in Rwanda and Uganda. Scott chairs the International Primary Palliative Care Network which seeks to encourage research and advocacy for a palliative care approach to be adopted internationally in primary care. He leads the EAPC Primary Care Reference Group which has produced a toolkit for national palliative care development in the community, now translated into French and German.

Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh We have collaborated since 1996 with Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, to teach palliative care programmes. Our partnership with Queen Margaret University ensures that our education programmes are contemporary and fit the needs of healthcare professionals and palliative and end of life care practice.

Developments within Queen Margaret University Nursing Division in line with the local, national and global policy context and alongside the emerging themes in health and social care saw a new MSc Person-centred Practice Framework evolve, including a palliative care pathway within the Framework.

A Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care offers a flexible mode of study at degree level. The programme is now primarily accessed by registered nurses, as at the point of graduation there is still a need to develop the critical knowledge and skill required in palliative and end of life care practice.

The Hospice’s Education Team believes that education and collaborative working are key to extending the scope of palliative care provision. Accordingly hospice clinical staff, visiting clinicians, colleagues from Queen Margaret University and professionals with expertise in the module content, join the Education Team in the delivery of education. As well as the Hospice and Queen Margaret University partnership providing palliative care education, we are involved in a growing portfolio of research activities and collaboration, including research into person-centred palliative care practice.
