warm welcome to the Spring/Summer 2022 edition of Life magazine. It’s with great sadness that we begin by sharing the news that Dr Derek Doyle, one of our founding board members, and the first medical director of St Columba’s Hospice Care, died in January. Dr Doyle was a pioneer in the field of palliative care and dedicated his life to improving care for dying people around the world.

known Dr Doyle; you may have worked with him, heard him speak at conferences or been inspired from afar. On pages 13–16 you’ll find an article detailing the key milestones of his life and work. Everything the Hospice is today, is a result of his pioneering spirit and vision.

Over the past six months, we’ve been working tirelessly to adapt the way we do things at the Hospice to better serve our local community and

the problems they are facing. Within the Hospice itself, we’ve repurposed our Cedar ward so we can meet the changing needs of our patients and their families.

The space is now home to our innovative Wellbeing Service which brings our wellbeing and clinical care together, helping us to achieve the very best we can for local people. In this issue, we’re honoured to be able to share Ruth Williamson’s story which

For the patients and families we support across East Lothian, there are times when a trip into our hospice building in Edinburgh can seem like a long way. In April, we marked the launch of our East Lothian appeal with a Black Tie Dinner at Archerfield. The appeal’s

aim is to help raise funds to support the development of our newly-formed Hospice at Home team operating across East Lothian.

This team is central to our long-term service delivery strategy and enables us to deliver vital support to people in their own homes.

News from the Hospice St Columba’s Hospice Care recognised as first University Hospice in East of Scotland

F

ollowing the announcement of a pioneering agreement with Queen Margaret University, St Columba’s Hospice Care has been officially recognised as the first University Hospice in the

East of Scotland. The Hospice joins only a handful of hospices in the country to achieve this prestigious status which will provide a stronger platform for teaching and research in the future. Dr Erna

Haraldsdottir, Director of Education and Research for St Columba’s Hospice Care and Senior Lecturer at QMU, said: “The announcement comes as a result of years of collaborative working between the organisations and will also be hugely advantageous to students wishing to gain practical working experience within a palliative and end of life care setting.”

Photography Book raises over £20,000 for the Hospice

A

photography book, 'Edinburgh: The Silent City', featuring stunningly eerie shots of Edinburgh during lockdown has raised £20,360 (and counting!) for St Columba’s Hospice Care. Edinburgh resident Stuart Montgomery, published the book in

2020 after documenting the deserted city centre during his daily exercise hour. Stuart dedicated the book to his father and decided to donate the proceeds from sales to the Hospice in memory of his mother, Nancy Montgomery, who was a patient 27 years

ago. A huge thank you to Stuart for his hard work on the book and for the amazing sum he’s donated to the Hospice!

When it comes to clothing, it’s no secret that charity shops have always provided a good alternative to unethical fast fashion, but how can you get the most out of them? We’ve put together our top tips to help you achieve a more sustainable wardrobe all while contributing to a great cause!

1 Visit frequently We put out new stock every day. If you visit us on weekdays, we’re likely to be a bit quieter and that means less competition for the best stuff! There may be times when you leave with nothing but if at first you don’t succeed… it pays to pop in regularly.

2 Donate pre-loved items Why not donate clothes you no longer wear to the Hospice and encourage friends and family to do the same? We rely on a continuous stream of donations to keep our shops running. The more pre-loved items we get, the more likely you are to find something you love.

Putting comfort, health and happiness at the forefront, we’ve undergone an exciting refurbishment to repurpose our Cedar Ward so that we can meet the changing needs of our patients and their families.

Wellbeing at the heart T

he space is now home to our new Wellbeing Service which encompasses the ‘Wellbeing Hub’ and the ‘Wellbeing Unit’.

The aim of our innovative new service is to support and empower people to improve their quality of life in a way defined by them.

This includes giving people the knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their symptoms and to improve how prepared they feel for living with the implications of a life-limiting illness.

The Wellbeing Hub provides a range of communitybased palliative rehabilitation support via courses, classes and outpatient clinics delivered both in person at the Hospice and virtually to maximise accessibility.

We’ve also created a dedicated section on our website which details all upcoming classes and programmes and has a number of resources which can be accessed online from the comfort of home.

The Wellbeing Service is about ensuring people feel confident and in control of their own wellbeing. We’re seeing a move away from people wanting to receive care in a clinical setting with an increasing number of our service users opting to be at home with family for as long as possible.

Anything we can do to support that and encourage independence is a huge comfort for our patients as it enables choice.

We’ve managed to create a welcoming and safe space offering a wide range of person-centred care and support. With the additional benefits the short stay unit brings, I think we have a service that’s innovative and reflects what matters most to our patients.

The combination of the unit and hub is a first in Scotland which is a great achievement, we’re excited to see how it develops over the coming months.

t’s still early days, but outcomes for our patients so far include gaining a more positive outlook, becoming less isolated and having a greater sense of wellbeing, one patient, said:

"I'm leaving here feeling like a new woman, I'm so glad I came! It’s so good to learn new things that I can take home with me. It's been like a holiday, away from all the pain and everything, I haven’t had a full night’s sleep like that in over 2 years!"

A truly wonderful place Ruth Williamson (40) was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) at the end of 2017, just 11 months after giving birth to her daughter Anna. MND is a rapidly progressing terminal illness, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles. The news left Ruth, her husband Scott and their family devastated.

I

n under five years, I’ve gone from being a busy, active new mum who loved doing things with my husband and daughter to being completely paralysed. It’s very lonely being trapped in my body with a fully functioning brain but the Hospice has become my safe place – somewhere with incredible

staff where I can go and get support and be ill without people staring.

The most difficult thing about having MND is knowing that I can’t walk my little girl to school, hug her, do her hair, read to her, the list goes on and on.

Anna is five now and mentally, not having that interaction leaves me with a sense of pure guilt that

she has to have a mum like me, it’s so painful and utterly heart-breaking.

I was terrified when I first heard of the Hospice through my MND nurse, but was overwhelmed by what a beautiful place it is and how unbelievably supportive, kind and genuine the staff are. I had a week stay when our bathroom was altered to a wet room and found that a very positive experience. I now do regular physio, mindfulness and complementary therapy sessions through the wellbeing service, all have helped me enormously.

We all depend on the service more than anyone or anywhere else.

I wanted to share my story because I want more people to know how the Hospice has helped me to live rather than anything about death.

I seriously can't say anything negative but just how it has helped me to live for as long as possible. All you need sometimes is to get away from the pressures of life.

It’s a truly wonderful place.

Dr Derek Doyle Staff and volunteers at St Columba's Hospice Care have paid tribute to the life and inspirational legacy of the organisation's first medical director and founding board member Dr Derek Doyle, who died in January aged 90.

1956 Dr Doyle married Bethia Robb and began work at Leith Hospital, where he gained experience in surgery.

1957 Dr Doyle and Bethia travelled to South Africa, where he initially worked as a missionary surgeon, and later oversaw a 150-bed facility in Transkei as Medical Superintendent.

1966 Dr Doyle and Bethia return from South Africa with their young family and Dr Doyle begins working as a GP at Corstorphine Hospital. Here he meets Ann Weatherall, the matron who shares a keen interest in palliative care.

Dr Doyle & Ann Weatherall establish St Columba’s Hospice in Trinity, Edinburgh.

Ann Weatherall fulfilled the role of Matron, and Dr Doyle became the Hospice’s first medical director.

r Derek Doyle was born in Bury, near Manchester on 13 July 1931. Soon after, his family relocated to Glasgow where he attended school before enrolling as a medical student at Edinburgh University, graduating in 1955.

After his studies, Dr Doyle travelled to South Africa with his wife where they worked as Church of Scotland missionaries through some of the worst years of apartheid, from 1957 to 1966. He focused initially on surgical work in a highly deprived area before taking up the role of Medical Superintendent to a 150-bed hospital in the Transkei.

When Dr Doyle returned to Edinburgh, he quickly established his own practice and worked both as a GP, and as an Associate Specialist in Corstorphine Hospital.

This coincided with the opening of St Christopher’s in South London - the world’s first modern hospice. Following a meeting with Dame Cicely Saunders and inspired by the model of care at St Christopher’s, Ann Weatherall, the Matron at Corstorphine Hospital, began to explore the feasibility of opening a hospice in Edinburgh.

Weatherall envisioned a facility which would not only offer exceptional end-of-life care but also specialise in teaching and research. With Dr Doyle's support, this vision became a reality when St Columba’s Hospice opened its doors to patients in December 1977. Nestled on the banks of the Firth of Forth in Edinburgh, Dr Doyle became a founding board member and the Medical Director of the first hospice in Scotland.

Dr Doyle had a remarkable life and played a critical role in shaping a new discourse at the end of life. During his final years, Dr Doyle continued to influence palliative care developments internationally. He promoted the work of his specialty with passion and determination and dedicated his life to compassion for patients and their families.

Dr Doyle died peacefully at home, on Friday 21 January 2022, surrounded by family, and leaves an enduring global legacy at St Columba’s Hospice Care, throughout the world of palliative care and beyond.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m originally from County Leitrim in Ireland, but I moved to London to study nursing. After qualifying, I lived in countries around the world, including the USA and Australia, but I settled in Scotland and have been here for around 20 years!

What does a typical day look like for you?

It really depends what’s on the agenda! My job is a mix of facilitating and creating courses to educate people on palliative care, but I also participate in inductions for staff. I’m currently developing a programme of support to help staff deal with the most emotionally challenging aspects of their jobs.

What made you want to (re)join the team?

Previously, I worked on the ward as a Staff Nurse but I decided to take some time away from palliative care following a bereavement.

I went into community nursing for a while, and when I felt ready to dip my toes back into palliative care, joined Marie Curie as Project ECHO Lead. When this job became available, it felt like a great opportunity to come back!

What is your favourite thing about working here?

What do you like doing in your spare time?

There are lots of things to like here, but I like the people!

I’m working with a different team to before but everyone is so friendly. It’s also a beautiful place to work, the views from the education centre are stunning. When the weather allows it, I cycle from Inverkeithing to make the most of the location!

I love being outdoors, I’m a keen cyclist and hill walker.

I’ve done the West Highland Way a few times, and of course, the Celtic Challenge!

I also enjoy spending time at home with my Husband, Adrian and my cat, Luna!

Mulholland Tour de France

Andrew and Douglas are cycling 3,328km in aid of the hospice

Father and son duo, Douglas (75) and Andrew (45) have set themselves a mammoth task cycling 3,328km (the distance of the 2022 Tour de France) in memory of Jean Mulholland.

Son of the late Jean, Andrew, said: “Jean was a wife, mum, Gran and a friend to many. She spent her final weeks receiving the best care at St Columba’s Hospice. Our family will be forever grateful to the dedicated and skilled staff who made this time as comfortable and intimate as it could be for her and us.”

The pair have exceeded their original fundraising target of £1,000, raising £1,885 already, having ‘only’ cycled 316km! From everyone at the Hospice, we wish you the best of luck completing the rest of your challenge!

Bill's bird boxes After spending 18 years restoring his 1967 Volkswagen, Bill finally finished it during the first lockdown, making time for a new hobby.

He needed a new bird table, and once he’d made one for himself, Bill decided to continue making them to sell in support of the Hospice.

Bill said: “It’s quite

satisfying to enjoy your hobby and make a small contribution to a tremendously worthy cause.” Bill is always on the lookout for scrap wood planks, so please get in touch with him if you have some to spare, or would like to order your own bird box or table - 07974 155289.

itibank Edinburgh made a generous donation of £5,000 and held their own Winter Olympics that raised £1,225. In December they took part in a one-off Give an Hour of your salary which raised £1,175 - a huge thanks to all the teams involved!

Launched in May, our partnership with Intercontinental Edinburgh the George Hotel gives guests of the Printing Press Bar & Kitchen the option to add invisible chips (£5) to their bill, while visitors at Burr & Co will be able to add an invisible coffee (£3) to their order. Every donation will directly help the patients and families we support.

Our Celtic Challenge is going on tour to France! The cycle will cover 200 miles of the stunning Normandy coastline over 4 days, starting in the historic port town of Cherbourg, and finishing up in the small fishing port of Ouistreham.
