In Recognition of and Thanksgiving for 26 Years of Mission and Ministry as Rector of St. David’s Church 1997-2023
The Rev. W. Frank Allen
Thanksgiving The Lord works in mysterious ways, and I am thankful for that! Little did I know when God introduced me to Frank when I was a freshman at Duke in 1977 that it would make such a difference. My wife Julie and I became close friends of Frank and Amy in college. Later we started our families together in the late 1980’s here in Philadelphia only to see them move away as Frank began seminary in Virginia. Julie and I came to St. David’s in the early 1990’s delighted to make it our family’s spiritual home. Then God moved me to become more involved at St. David’s and landed me on the Discernment Committee as we sought a new rector. I was delighted when the committee unanimously selected Frank to be our new leader. I remember vividly sitting in the Church in November 1997, when newly arrived, Frank delivered his first sermon on Thanksgiving Day. From the beginning it was clear that under Frank’s leadership we were indeed a Church on a Mission. His love for the people of St. David’s was obvious and with that love he moved us forward. His courageous leadership led us to undertake a series of bold improvements to our beautiful buildings and grounds to make room for more people to join our dynamic community. He also led us to think expansively and to make a difference not only here in Pennsylvania but in the larger world as well including Uganda and Guatemala. The Ferguson Family is thankful indeed that Frank, Amy, and their three wonderful sons (Will, Rob and Ben) have been such an integral part of our lives these past three decades. We are better for their presence here as is the entire community here at St. David’s. We will miss him as our rector, but our love for him and his for us will last our lifetimes! With an attitude of gratitude, we say thank you for your leadership and love and we wish you well. Ritson and Julie Ferguson

The Rev. Elizabeth W. Colton Frank has an uncanny ability to find gifts in staff that are needed for the mission of the church. He is completely open to new ideas, he supports trying out new initiatives, and is not discouraged by lukewarm results. His open spirituality pervades everything he does, and that causes all of us who work with him to bloom! Frank’s warm and constant support has nurtured me. I am so grateful to have worked closely with Frank these last five years; they’ve been the icing on the cake of my working life. Many blessings, Frank! Liz

The Clergy of St. David’s Church
Music Ministry at St. David's Church “Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!” ~ Psalm 105:2 It is hard to put into words the many ways Frank has been a blessing to St. David’s and to me personally. His musical background and gifts, incredible bari-tenor voice, and his love of music in worship informed his vision for music in the life of St. David’s 26 years ago. Having been part of that vision for the past 25 years, I know that a divine hand must have brought me to serve as director of music with this energetic, charismatic, and then 40-year-old priest, in 1999. In the first years we had many conversations about our respective visions of music in worship and growing the choir programs. Over time, he continued to be the most supportive and caring rector and friend any church musician could ever hope to have. Frank supported and affirmed our choir volunteers, professional singers, and other musicians, inspiring them to give their very best. He rarely went a week without something positive to say about how well the choirs sang or rang. Frank understands the commitment that choir volunteers make and would let them know how important it was and express gratitude for them. As for me, I will miss his relentless teasing, sometimes irreverent (ironic, coming from a reverend) sense of humor, but in the end, his genuine love and appreciation for choir volunteers young and old, and the work we do to glorify God, have been a blessing to me. Clair Rozier
Reflections from the Senior Statesmen
The Rev. William Hoge Wood III Frank's heart has always been as big as the world. That's the main reason he has been the best clergyman most of us will ever know. There is no situation in human life that he does not bring the love of God to bear, always using the wisdom that flows from that love. I met Frank some years ago when he was a layman. I was struck by his directness and thoroughness. Years later it therefore did not surprise me when the Search Committee of St. David's asked him to become their next rector. Frank had never been a rector before ... and only an Assistant for several years. On one occasion, later in his ministry, Frank came to the conclusion - after several disappointments - that God did not want him to be a bishop. At the time, I questioned that conclusion. In hindsight, I think Frank may have been right. He was doing an indispensable job of leading the people of St. David's through the confusions of this age. He and Amy had become the reliable and indispensable friends of us all. Frank has always embodied the simple faith that God is involved in all of life. We who know them have learned to count Frank and Amy for that truth. Bill The Rev. E. Edward Shiley Frank, our ministry together at St. David’s has been a rich experience because of your generosity of heart, your love of people, your genuine kindness, and your openness to different and new ways of thinking and being. You will always be my spiritual brother and a dear friend. Ed
Reflections from the Senior Statesmen The Rev. Dr. Alexander McCurdy III Esse Quam Videri
“To be rather than to seem to be,” a Latin motto of a nearby school. Sounds good, but how does the rector of a complex and even moderately diverse membership do that? How did Frank Allen for more than a quarter of a century keep the ship of St. Davids from floundering on the ledges of politics, personality, and diverse theological schools of thought? Frank never figured it out, but instead with the hand of his heart, he simply touched us. With the soul of his Lord, he loved us. Not that he wasn’t, at times, sorely bruised by the job, being roundly reprimanded or criticized for this “failure” or that. Those of us close to him, and especially his dear wife Amy, knew the bruises he bore, the various forms of polite and not so gentle attacks he experienced and grieved over. Frank often had a sore neck caused by excessive cheekrotations. But oh how he listened to his Lord, sagging from time to time in stumbling along behind Him, but yes, manfully following in His footsteps, never breaking under the burdens, under the crosses he carried. And he managed to stay real in doing so. Oh, haven’t we seen Frank in moments of laughter as well as tears. A man who knew joy and sadness. He was always our brother. He was wherever we were in the relations and the vicissitudes of our lives. He’d show up pronto when there was need, on the Schuylkill Expressway at 3:30 in the morning headed to one of us in crisis at H.U.P. or even worse at C.H.O.P. David’s words of anguish were often in his head: “Absalom, Absalom, would that it were I,” But always, in words or actions, he preached the Gospel, lived the Gospel, clung to the Gospel with all his might, especially when buffeted by fierce headwinds of our occasionally pesky personalities and dogmas. St. Paul spoke of the likes of Frank, the ones even whose feet, whose foundations, were blessed. Frank confessed his sins and taught us to do so too. But he also sang the Gospel to us, metaphorically and literally, very often bounding back to his office after an 8:00 a.m. service, his voice singing at great volume the essence of words he’s just spoken: “Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known and from whom no secrets are hid, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts…” So now he is about to leave us, but only in a literal and superficial sense. Through his Lord and ours, he stays with us always. Thanks be to God. And we thank you, Frank! Sandy
Preserving the History of St. David’s Church Frank recognized early in his ministry the importance of preserving the traditions of St. David’s Church. Worship in the 1715 Church Weekly Sunday worship, Christmas, Easter, and Holy Week services are celebrated in the historic church, as well as baptisms, weddings, special music offerings, and memorial services. The Church underwent two significant renovations in 2004 and 2014.

Honoring the Past while Embracing a Future Vision An Attitude of Gratitude Very early in Frank’s rectorship he preached about having an open, daily grateful heart. His “Attitude of Gratitude” is evident in his trips to Uganda, in helping with the development of the Gift Shop and, later, in his vision of a St. David’s Art Gallery. Frank's open office door, his listening and his discerning leadership are gifts to us all. Often his answer is to wait, to pray, to listen, and to be grateful for the here and now. Nereida Gordon

A Legacy of Faith, Worship, Fellowship, and Growth We are a Church on a Mission to Know God in Jesus Christ and to make Christ known to Others
A review of the recent history of St. David’s Church, as in the last 75 (out of 308) years, sheds light on how monumental changes in the spirit and size of the parish resulted from the burgeoning influx of the faithful attracted to worship in this special place, steered wisely by exceptional leadership. In the 1950s, the Rev. John Knewstub brought the post-war church to a new presence; response to demand created the Sunday School classrooms by the Harrison Room, followed soon after by the 1956 Chapel, its undercroft, meeting spaces, and offices that transformed the parish in ways unimaginable only a few decades earlier. History has repeated itself, this time by an order of magnitude, with the leadership these last 26 years of the Rev. Frank Allen; as the force of hundreds of new members, attracted to this place to know Christ and make Christ known, fueled the expansions of the 2006 new Chapel, the Fair Sheds, offices and meeting spaces, new Gift Shop, the 1715 Church historical restoration, and the renovated Knewstub educational building to house the enormously successful St. David’s Episcopal Day School. These physical changes, however, tell only part of the story, almost paling before the hundred-plus ministries, worship and educational programs, and the regional and international outreach efforts that sprouted and flourished under his aegis. St. David’s parishioners of the future will see in these last two-plus decades a rector, who through grace, wisdom, and the love for his congregation, created one of the most successful churches of his era, where Christ truly was known, and made known to others. St. David’s as a Community of Worship
Invitation to Ministry Frank has many gifts he has shared with the community of St. David's as our rector, and all of us have been the blessed recipients. Yet for me, the gift which has had the most impact is the power of the ‘invitation’. Frank’s uncanny ability to see what each of us needs and to extend just the right ‘invitation’ to help us come closer to God, to strengthen our spiritual growth, and for us to know and experience the grace of God’s love. Catsy Pemberton
St. David’s as a Community of Caring Stewards
If You Build It, They Will Come for Worship, Ministry, and Fellowship During Frank’s time as rector, we were able to celebrate his ten-year milestone of ministry. The parish was invited to Citizens Bank Park to watch a Phillies game and to hear Frank sing the National Anthem. I used to tease Frank that it was a good thing for St. David’s that he was raised in Texas, a very large state because he always thought big thoughts and was always trying to grow the church. If he had come from Delaware or Rhode Island, I fear we would never have been able to grow the way we did! Frank transformed this parish so that St. David’s was and always has been a refuge from the crazy world we live in and for this we will be forever grateful. Mike Mayer
St. David’s as a Community of Love Before a word is spoken, you know it will be okay… Sometimes it’s not a single moment that gives us remembrance but a series of split seconds that repeat. Whether it’s in the Chapel greeting line, walking past Frank at the Fair, or at the Communion rail receiving the wafer, it’s that split second before the dialogue. I’m drawn to three lines from the poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” when the father engages St. Nicholas. “His eyes--how they twinkled!” and a few lines later, “A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;” For me, one of Frank’s many gifts is that twinkle in his eye and the smile he is blessed with. Experiencing that split second, you know it will be okay and are filled with warmth and love. No matter what transpired that week, that twinkle and smile, let me know the Grace of God is with me. It Never Rained
Amazing Grace
In August of 2009, Frank asked me to be the next St. David’s wedding coordinator. I said yes and that began an amazing 11-year journey. During my time as wedding coordinator, more than 75 of the 115 weddings in which I assisted were celebrated by Frank. It never rained nor snowed during his weddings; perhaps before or after but never during.
One of my most precious memories of Frank occurred during the last days of Peter’s life. Frank visited every day. On the day before Peter died, I was sitting by the side of his bed singing hymns to him. While singing “Amazing Grace” I heard the rich baritone voice of Frank joining in behind me. He walked up beside me, and we continued singing together.

50 Years Later In 2014, we asked Frank to preside over the celebration of our 50th Wedding Anniversary. We were not as nervous as we had been on July 25, 1964, so we were able to appreciate the deeper and more spiritual meaning of the ceremony and feel the warmth and love in the room. Message To Pastor Frank from Romans
Dear Brethren of St. David’s Church, On behalf of Trinity Children’s Centre - Kabowa, Centenary High School - Nyendo, Double Cure Hospital - Mpigi, I pray that you are all doing well. It is quite difficult to express what we, as The Romans Ministries in Uganda, have achieved through Rev. W. Frank Allen, as a person and as St. David’s rector. It is impossible to articulate all his good deeds and his big heart. We salute and thank him very much for his interest, prayers, and support for our work in Uganda in particular, and for all other Outreach projects worldwide. Pastor Frank, as you are popularly known in Africa, allow me to paraphrase 2 Timothy 4:78 to convey my heartfelt message to you. “You have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith. Now there is in store for you the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.” Enjoy having the time to do all the things you've always wanted to do. Now that you're retired, I hope you'll have time for all you’ve planned, like volunteering in Uganda! God bless you and let you continue being a blessing for others for many years. Congratulations on your retirement. In you I found a real brother with a sense of humor!! Yours brotherly, The Rev. Can. David Serunjogi [ROMANS 8:1] + Sarah
Outreach Partners Frank and St. David’s Guatemala Mission In 1999, St. David’s began the Guatemala companionship with 2 small churches under one priest, and now, in 2023, St. David’s partners with four churches and three priests. The relationship has developed through worship, work trips, and fellowship, including trilingual conversations in Kiché, Spanish, and English. Frank will surely always remember the difference between two Spanish words that can be translated as “hot”: caliente (hot temperature) and picante (spicy). Frank’s role has been both to inspire others and to participate himself by sometimes leading groups to Guatemala and facilitating activities when our Guatemalan brothers and sisters visit St. David’s. In 2012, Frank was honored by Bishop Armando Guerra for his contributions to the life of the Diocese of Guatemala by being made an Honorary Canon for Mission. Carol Kangas
The Allen Family Through the Years Frank, Amy, Will, Rob, and Ben Parishioners knew the house on 131 Beaumont Road in Devon as the Rectory. Frank, Amy, Will, Rob, and Ben knew it as home. Amy is a pediatrician and comes from a medical family (her father was a dentist, and her mother is a retired physician). Amy is a member of the St. David’s Handbell Choir and a volunteer with the beekeeping ministry which sells honey at the Fair. The boys went to school, played basketball in the driveway, soccer in the backyard, and made lifelong friends in the community. The Allens shared meals at the kitchen table, decorated the house for Christmas, celebrated birthdays, graduations, and many other special occasions as a family during the years they lived at 131 Beaumont Road. In June 2013, the family returned to their home to care for each other after they survived a horrific plane crash during a sight-seeing tour of Alaska. The congregation has found 131 Beaumont Road to be a place of fellowship, food, and grace. Many parishioners established warm relationships after sharing a meal, cooked by the rector, often smoked salmon, a Frank specialty, or something delicious grilled on the smoker. Spending time at the Rectory with the Allen Family remains a warm memory for parishioners, clergy, and staff. Will, Rob, and Ben all graduated from Conestoga High School, and followed in their parents’ tradition and are Duke University alumni as well. Will and his wife, Leah, live in Denver with their young son, Amy and Frank’s first grandchild. Rob and his fiancée are finishing their respective medical training in California. Ben, following in his paternal grandfather's footsteps, is an attorney and is practicing law in New York City. Marilyn Callaghan

And Now Let Us Pray Parishioners have heard Frank say “Let us Pray” hundreds of times. Frank prayed for us daily and invited us to a life of prayer, to follow Christ and to live a life that is truly life.
The Merton Prayer My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
