Mission Message from the CEO

WINTER 2009 ON THE DIAL

Great Expectations Dear Relevant Radio Family, Advent is a time of preparation and a time to slow down and reflect on the many blessings and gifts that we have received throughout the year. It is a time to imitate Our Lady and ponder these blessings in our hearts, along with the great expectation of what, or rather Who, is to come. In her famous Magnificat, Our Lady proclaims that “the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name!” She reflects on what He has done and praises Him for His gifts, especially the great Gift of her Son. Advent is a time to prepare with Our Lady and look back to all that God has done for us as well as look forward to what He has in store for us. As we prepare for Christmas, we at Relevant Radio give thanks for the many listeners who have faithfully supported our mission during the past year. We reflect that the Lord has done great things for us through our listeners, realizing that we could not have gotten this far nor could we have helped countless souls come back to the Faith without your support. We realize that we are in this together – it takes a whole lot of people to make this happen. While we give thanks for these blessings, we also look ahead to God’s great gifts. With Our Lady, we expect God to do great things for us and for those to whom we minister. We hope for future growth and opportunities to evangelize in areas where we do not yet exist. We look forward to a continued relationship with you and hope for your help in spreading the word about Relevant Radio far and wide. Let us together expect miracles from Him for ourselves and for our loved ones!

Prayer Focus: Christmas Novena A Novena is nine days of public or private prayer for some special occasion or intention, usually leading up to a feast day. Its origin goes back to the nine days that the Disciples and Mary spent together in prayer between Ascension and Pentecost Sunday. The word “Novena” is derived from the Latin term "novem", meaning nine. The Christmas Novena begins December 16 and ends on Christmas Eve. Hail, and blessed be the hour and moment At which the Son of God was born Of a most pure Virgin At a stable at midnight in Bethlehem In the piercing cold At that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, To hear my prayers and grant my desires (mention request here). Through Jesus Christ and His most Blessed Mother.

Daily Mass: A Daily Blessing!

When the weather outside is frightful in winter months, it’s not always possible to venture out on the roads to attend Mass. What a blessing it is to have The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass broadcast every week night at 8:30pm CT. Daily Mass listeners have the opportunity to join the Relevant Radio family each day for Mass. Bring your day’s sufferings and joys to the altar and offer them up to God our Father, who deserves our thanks and praise for all that He has given to us. Listeners will be uplifted after hearing the day’s Scripture readings and homily presented by different priests each day, which in turn give different perspectives and insights into the various facets of our faith. (Weekdays 8:30pm CT, Sundays 9am CT)

FAQ’s of the Faith: Faithfully Answered Questions What is the Immaculate Conception? Although many people believe the Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of Jesus – it is a dogma of the Catholic Church that involves Mary’s own conception within the womb of her mother, St. Anne. On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX defined infallibly that “the doctrine which declares the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of Original Sin, is a doctrine revealed by God, and therefore must be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.” This is the best explanation of how this can be is from Steve Ray on his video on Mary: “There are two ways to be save someone from the effects of a mud puddle. The first is to grab the person after they have fallen in mud puddle and clean them up. The second it to prevent someone from even falling in – by grabbing their arm and keeping them from ever getting dirty.” The merits of Jesus Christ redeemed the Blessed Virgin Mary just as He did us. The difference is God gave Mary the unique privilege of being redeemed by prevention rather than the cure. It is fitting that the Mary would be granted such a privilege of being created without Original Sin – prevented from the very stain that the Son of God came to conquer.

Dear Fr. Rocky, I have been listening to Relevant Radio for a year or so. This is the first time I am able to pledge. Thank you for all the programming. My children and I enjoy listening to it when we are in the car. My oldest son loved the stories of the saints - especially St. Maximilian Kolbe. Now he has Relevant Radio set on his alarm clock and even listens when he is doing chores in his room. Young people long for the truth! I hope this small contribution, fruit of our sacrifice this month, can help spread the Good News that our world so needs to hear. I will continue to pray for your mission! Sincerely, Miriam (Mother of 3 boys) Please pray for their vocation

The Faces of Relevant Radio

A knot, in the traditional sense, ties or binds something together. The NOT (Network Operations Team) at Relevant Radio works the same way in that it’s responsible for connecting listeners with 12 hours of broadcasting per day – 24 hours when you consider every piece of audio goes through this team en route to your radio. This team is comprised of broadcast technicians working in Master Control. Some are also trained as board operators who operate the soundboards during Morning Air®, The Inner LifeTM, Go Ask Your FatherTM, On CallTM and The Drew Mariani ShowTM. Every live show has multiple audio elements that make up the show. Some of the elements are the host sitting behind the microphone, their guest(s), the callers calling into the show, and the music beds that play at the beginning and end of every segment.

Broadcast Operations Manager, Martin Jury.

can look overwhelming to the casual observer. “Everyone in here has a capacity and willingness to learn more about the technology,” says Jury. “A lot of that is what people fear. When people are coming by on tour and look into Master Control’s window, they get a wide-eyed look on their face that says ‘What is all this? I’ll never understand all that!’ The more you sit in here, the more it makes sense and you gain a real understanding of how radio works and how the network works.”

Mat Deibert running the soundboard for Morning Air.®

These elements all need to be merged together to make a seamless show. When a board operator is doing their job well, you don’t even think about them, you focus on the show. The same is true when it comes to Master Control. Broadcast Operations Manager, Martin Jury, says “The highest compliment we can receive is that you never think about us.” Master Control is the last stop before the audio leaves the building in Green Bay, goes down to North Carolina via a T1 line, gets shot into space and back down to the continental United States. The two primary responsibilities of broadcast techs are to ensure the audio continues and that the right show is playing at the right time.

The Master Control room, filled with its many computers and racks and racks of technology,

Radio stations these days no longer have people operating them 24/7 but still need to bring localism into their stations. This is done automatically through the firing of tones from Master Control that triggers the local messages and legal identification of the stations. Broadcast techs make sure the tones are firing at the proper time and the proper content is playing.

ON THE DIAL WINTER 2009

Even if you’re not listening to a live program, you’re still listening to work that comes from the NOT. Many Relevant Radio live programs are replayed evenings and overnights. Those are all recorded in Master Control as the live shows are going on and reposted to be played back later. If you enjoy listening to audio on the web, that audio is also recorded in Master Control and posted to the web by a broadcast tech.

The Faces of Relevant Radio It takes a tremendous amount of work and vigilance to keep a radio network such as Relevant Radio running smoothly 24/7. The NOT ties it all together to ensure that next time you turn on your radio; you hear your favorite Relevant Radio programs loud and clear.

The biggest challenge in Master Control is the unknown. “Equipment is going to fail at a certain point and it’s up to us to have enough redundancy built in so that when a system crashes, we can move on to a back up”, Jury says. The broadcast techs perform systems checks through out their shifts to make sure all the equipment is functioning properly. They are also the first line of trouble shooting if there’s a problem with the network or an affiliate.

Dr. Christine MugridgeA Message of Hope During the first week of November, Dr. Christine Mugridge, Vatican Analyst and Network Correspondent for Relevant Radio, visited local markets and shared with Relevant Radio listeners the encouraging message of hope for the Church in America in the third millennium. She explained that as she studied the writings of the Holy Fathers, she learned that the message for the future is not for doom or gloom, or just about the fight against secularism or communism, but that through the Holy Fathers, through the synods of Bishops, and through ecclesial communities, the Holy Spirit was enlivening the Church to prepare for a period of great grace. Dr. Mugridge stated that John Paul II left us with the message that in the New Evangelization we are not going to engage in a program that we have to carry ourselves. The foundation of the New Evangelization itself is that Jesus and his blessed Mother are doing something within us, and for us. After each speaking engagement, many listeners were able to meet Dr. Mugridge personally, and many expressed a desire to share her comments with others who could not attend. To hear Dr. Mugridge’s presentation, go to your local Relevant Radio webpage, and enter keyword “talk”.

ON THE DIAL WINTER 2009

Ask the Expert! Q: Is there anything I can do to get a better reception in my home?

This issue’s expert is Martin Jury, the Broadcast Operations Manager of the Relevant Radio network. Over the years, Jury has worked in every aspect of radio, from being a show host, to technical engineering. He designed the Green Bay, WI and Golden Valley, MN studios. Q: Why does my Relevant Radio station get static at night? Can’t you just boost the signal? Jury: When AM radio started, the first stations out there were called “clear channels*” (*not to be confused with broadcasting company, Clear Channel Communications). These clear channel stations were given 50,000 watts with unlimited day and nighttime operation to broadcast as far as they could and were granted protection from other signals beyond where they could be heard. As more AM stations started, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) ensured this frequency protection for the original clear channels. Since AM signals travel better at night, many stations have to power down so as not to impede on the clear channels’ signals. So it’s not really a matter of being able to boost a signal, but more about following FCC regulations.

Jury: Get your AM radio into a good open spot near a window and away from all other electrical appliances. Take your radio and turn it around to see if the reception improves. For most radios, the real antenna is not the stick that’s coming out of the radio but an inside coil. The trick is to align the coil to the signal. If all else fails, invest in an internet connection and stream Relevant Radio. Q: I’ve heard that a smart radio can get a better signal than a regular radio. Is it worth the investment? Jury: Smart radios, depending on your location in relation to the AM signal, can be a good investment. But with every radio station, there’s a limit. If you’re close enough to the signal, smart radios can do little things to boost it. Some can counter some of the interfering factors. Q: In the Spring and Fall I have trouble tuning into my FM Relevant Radio station, why is that? Jury: The problem is called tropospheric ducting or just simply ducting and it works sort of like the ducting in your home. An FM signal has the ability in the Spring and Fall to travel a little bit better because the conditions are such that it gets up into the troposphere. The troposphere takes the signal and sends it to places that it normally wouldn’t go. It hurts us because when it happens and the signal goes out, it often goes out near the station.

Q: Relevant Radio comes in fine when I listen in my car. Why does the signal get fuzzy when I listen in my home? Jury: AM radio, without any interference, can go a very long distance. The problem is there are a lot of interfering factors with the signal. Power lines and Wi-Fi can cause interruption. In your home, fluorescent lights, TVs and other electrical appliances all radiate forms of interference to an AM signal. Take your AM radio with a perfectly clear signal, walk into your basement, and you’ll see your signal degrade if not disappear.

Q: How do solar flares affect radio? Jury: It’s basic science. When the sun and moon align, we experience a signal outage. When the moon moves in front of the sun, the shadowing disrupts the satellite signal. It’s a shadow that, more often than not, you don’t even see. These interruptions usually last only a few minutes.
