The missionaries from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Steamboat Springs range in age from 7 to 89, but no matter their years, they’re not afraid to pick up a crowbar for some heavy work. Youth Director Aaron Buttery, who heads the mission development, said his parish-

ioners are willing to tackle big projects at each mission site the church takes on, including past work in New Orleans and Mexico. Twelve-year-old Nissa Parker, along with her mother Nora, are among the 10 parishioners ready for the next mission trip to Romania in May. There, near the town of Arad, the group will work at a homestyled orphanage. “I’m really, really excited to

do this,” Nissa Parker said. “I just want to hang out with the kids. … We’re going to try to be as much of a presence as we can.” Nora Parker said her daughter urged her to sign them both up for the trip, and Nissa has shown she is willing to help pay for the trip, too. “My daughter just emptied her entire checking account, and all her personal savings are going toward this,” she said.
Buttery, who worked with the house-styled orphanage in 2004, said the two-week mission trip will focus on spending time with the children, living with local families and helping upgrade facilities in the town. If you do not know someone or a family that is affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, it is only a matter of time before you will. Whether we call ASD a national epidemic or a health crisis, the fact is that the numbers of individuals being diagnosed on the spectrum are startling. One in 150 individuals and one in 94 boys were diagnosed last year with ASD. Nationally, the rate of identified cases of this disorder is increasing 10 to 17 percent per year. Routt County and Colorado are no exception. ASD is a neurobiological disorder that impairs a person’s ability to communicate and relate socially to others. There is no known cause or cure. Individuals with ASD exhibit repetitive behaviors and routines, may tantrum excessively and experience a wide range of sensory and medical issues. Whole families struggle emotionally and financially as insurance and sometimes medical resources and support systems are lacking. Yampa Valley Autism Program’s mission is to help families living with ASD.

The offers are pouring in for Steamboat Springs High School seniors as the final crunch time for college selection comes to an end. Offers for financial aid, scholarships and grants are following the letters for admittance as colleges entice students making their final decisions. Senior John Cutter received admissions to nearly all of the colleges he applied to, but it was University of San Diego’s offer of financial aid that tipped the scales and led him

to choose the school. “Nowadays, it really comes down to who gives me more money,” he said. San Diego gave Cutter the only “good” offer, he said, and helped him choose the school instead of Pepperdine University and Santa Clara University. Cutter will double major in theology and political science at the school. Teachers at the high school, recognizing the difficult decisions students are facing, organized College Friday last week. All teachers were encouraged to wear paraphernalia from their alma maters to encourage students to ask questions
about colleges. The University of WisconsinMadison, the University of Akron, Florida State University, the University of Colorado and many other colleges were represented during the day. Charlie Leech, representing Colorado College and Center College, said most of his students have been asking about the Greek systems at the schools, but he also has been giving students advice about college selection. “(I’ve been telling them) the value of a liberal arts education, … and to expect the unexpectSee College, page 13

nstead of holiday shopping catalogues stuffing our mailboxes, gardeners now are receiving catalogues of the new offerings from garden centers and mail-order nurseries for 2009. Eye candy. And, wow, it’s so easy to satisfy your garden sweet tooth. It’s tempting to just look at the beautiful pictures of flowers, fruit, vegetables and trees in the catalogues and order away for colorful and interesting plants to fill in borders, bare spots and little garden niches needing something spectacular. Bracing for 400 and more Early spring storms could push Steamboat past 34 feet of snow STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
Steamboat Ski Area is set to break the 400-inch mark this season with at least two more storms predicted by the end of this week. Mike Chamberlain, a forecaster with the National Weather Service’s Grand Junction office, said Steamboat skiers can expect snow to begin Wednesday into Thursday, with 6 to 12 inches of snow possible. That would push the ski area more than the 400-inch mark. As of Sunday morning, the resort reported a total of 398.5 inches falling on the slopes of Mount Werner this season. “It looks like Wednesday night is going to be the best period of heavier precipitation,” Chamberlain said. “It

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?
Obama’s big bold bet Thomas L. Friedman THE NEW YORK TIMES
While campaigning for the presidency in 1932, in the midst of the Great Depression, Franklin Roosevelt gave a commencement address May 22 at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta that probably describes President Barack Obama’s strategy today as well as anything could. “The country needs and, unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent experimentaFriedman tion,” said Roosevelt. “It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.” When you total up all the emergency economic policies that Obama now has put in place — a nearly $800 billion stimulus, mortgage relief, a private-public
program for buying up toxic assets and a huge capital injection into the banking system by the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates and expand credit — they constitute one big experiment. Together, these policies — call them Obama Rescue Phase I — represent a huge bet that the administration can confine this economic crisis to a really nasty recession, the sort of thing that might constitute a long chapter in an economic history and not a 21st-century Depression that would trigger a whole bookshelf on the theme of: “How Barack Obama Won an Election and Lost an Economy.” From the left, Obama is being ripped for having too much of a market-based approach and not just bowing to the inevitability of nationalizing insolvent banks. From the right, he is being ripped for too much government intervention and not letting market forces play out. My own sense is this: The Obama package represents the sum total of what was minimally necessary to prevent sys-
temic breakdown, what politically was possible with a Congress that was in no mood to shell out another dime to bail out Wall Street, and what was operationally preferable — at this time — which was a strategy that did not require nationalizing Citigroup & Friends. As Obama officials put it to me: If you’re certain that you have to do some radical surgery — nationalize the banks — do it sooner rather than later. But if you think you might have an option, and if you think that nationalization brings with it other huge problems, and if you think that Congress isn’t going to give you another cent, then you try other things first. Obama is betting that the totality of economic policies his team and the Federal Reserve have put in place will act, like radiation therapy, to halt the spread and reduce the size of the cancerous tumors eating away at our financial See Friedman, page 9
The first shrink Maureen Dowd
THE NEW YORK TIMES
Barack Obama grew up learning how to slip in and out of different worlds — black and white, foreign and American, rich and poor. The son of an anthropologist, he developed a lot of “tricks,” as he put it, training himself to be a close observer of human nature, figuring out what others needed so he could get where he wanted to go. He was able to banish Dowd any fear in older white folk that he was an angry young black man — with smiles, courtesy and, as he wrote in his memoir, “no sudden moves.” He learned negotiating skills as a community organizer and was able to ascend to the presidency of the Harvard Law Review by letting a dispa-

rate band of self-regarding eggheads feel that they were being heard and heeded. He privately rolls his eyes at the way many in politics and government spend so much time preening and maneuvering for credit rather than simply doing their jobs. Yet, with that detached and novelistic eye that allows him to be a great writer, he also is able to do a kind of political jujitsu, where he assesses the bluster and insecurities of other politicians, defuses them and then uses them to his advantage. W. always bragged about his instincts, saying he knew whom to trust based on his gut. But even with the help of psychologists putting together profiles of dictators and other major players for our intelligence services, Bush and his inner circle were extraordinarily obtuse about reading the motivations and the intentions of friends and foes. How could it never occur to them that Saddam Hussein simply might be bluff-
ing about the size of his WMD arsenal to keep the Iranians and other antagonists at bay? W. bristled at French and German leaders because he thought they were condescending to him. He thought he saw into Vladimir Putin’s soul until the Russian leader showed his totalitarian stripes. W. and Condi were so clueless about the mind-set of Palestinians that Condi was blindsided by the Hamas victory in 2006, learning the news from TV as she did the elliptical at 5 a.m. in the gym of her Watergate apartment. The Bush chuckleheads misread the world and insisted that everyone else go along with their deluded perception, and they bullied the world and got huffy if the world quickly didn’t fall in line. Obama, by contrast, employed smart psychology in the global club, even on See Dowd, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

system — and stimulate enough new growth and optimism so that Phase II will be small enough to get past Congress and the public. Have no doubt, Phase II is coming. At best, it will require hundreds of billions of dollars more, at worst more than a trillion, to deal with more bad loans and toxic assets weakening the economy — problems that Phase I can’t fully absorb. Because unemployment still is increasing — ensuring that the initial spate of mortgage defaults, which came from loans to people who could never repay, will be followed by another spate of defaults from those who could repay but now can’t because
the deteriorating economy has stripped them of their jobs, their businesses or their credit lines. The Obama strategy, said Robert Hormats, the vice chairman of Goldman Sachs International, “is based on the idea of mutual reinforcement, that when you put it all together — the money stimulating growth, the money relieving the credit crunch in the housing sector, the money injected by the Federal Reserve to lower rates, and the various initiatives to heal the banks without nationalization — you’ll get a boost to the economy that will be greater than the sum of its parts.” The success of the president’s approach, added Hormats, will depend on everything, indeed,
working together — “that the fiscal stimulus will improve the housing markets by creating more employment and growth, the improvement in housing will take pressure off banks, and less pressure on the banks will improve the availability of credit that will help housing and business job creation.” That is the president’s big bet — his first big Rooseveltian experiment. If he’s wrong, Phase II of the bailout will start with a “t,” as in a trillion, and it will trigger a ferocious political fight in Congress. But, if he’s right, it will start with a “b,” as in billions, Congress will be more easily finessed, and we just might emerge from this crisis without making too much economic history.
Like a good shrink, president always listens Dowd continued from 8 small things, such as asking other leaders if they wanted to start talking first at news conferences. With Anglo-American capitalism on trial and Gordon Brown floundering in the polls, Obama took pains to drape an arm around “Gordon” and return to using the phrase “special relationship.” He gave a shout-out to the Brown kids, saying he’d talked dinosaurs with them. He won points with a prickly Sarkozy when he intervened in an argument about tax havens between the French and Chinese leaders, pulling them into a corner to help them “get this all in some kind of
sussing them out without having to fathom what’s in their soul. “It is easy to talk to him,” Dmitri Medvedev said after their meeting. “He can listen.” The Russian president called the American one “my new comrade.” Obama, the least silly of men, even was willing to mug for a silly Facebook-ready picture, grinning and giving a thumbs-up with Medvedev and a goofy-looking Silvio Berlusconi. Now that America can’t put everyone under its thumb, a thumbs-up and a killer smile can go a long way.

Obama also played to the ego of the Napoleonic French leader, saying at their press conference, “He’s courageous on so many fronts, it’s hard to keep up.” Soon Sarko was back, gushing over his charmant Americain ami. President pledges to fund ASD research act Autism continued from 2 intervention for improved longterm outcomes. This coming year, YVAP is supporting and implementing a social thinking/mentoring program for our older individuals. We actively are pursuing bringing more highly qualified professionals to Routt County to provide diagnosis and offer additional therapies and services. As harsh as the statistics are, there most certainly is hope. At long last, serious dollars are being committed to research for a cause and cure along with improved treatments and therapies. The Combating Autism Act of 2006 was signed into law, for example. The law authorized increased federal funding for ASD research, public awareness and early diagnosis of ASD. Yet, federal funding did not increase to the levels authorized by the act. President Obama now has
pledged to fully fund the Combating Act of 2006. In his budget just released, the President has requested $211 million as part of the Health and Human Services budget to be directed to ASD. This money would be spent for screening, early intervention, support services and public awareness. In Colorado, pending legislation would mandate that insurance coverage be provided for therapy and early intervention to those who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Nine states have passed this legislation; 23 other states have pending legislation. We can make a difference for families affected by ASD. Lawmakers want to hear from us. If you want to help, you may e-mail, call or write to your senators and representatives to urge passage of the president’s budget request. In Colorado, you may contact state legislators to encourage passage of the insurance mandate.
Although we recognize the growing need in our community, Yampa Valley Autism Program is committed to sustaining our current programs. We will continue to provide quality services and educational resources for our families struggling on a day-to-day basis with this disorder. We see the gains our children are making, their improvement at home and in school, and we know there is reason for hope. We may not know why so many individuals have ASD, but we know for certain that with our help, so many of our children will have positive outcomes. YVAP is here to help and support our families. If you have concerns about your child, speak to your doctor. Please call us at 870-4263 or 8706257. We will help you find the resources you need.

Whole grains: A world of options Tamera Manzanares
SPECIAL TO THE PILOT & TODAY
Quinoa, amaranth, millet, spelt: These grains may be new to most Americans, but some cultures have eaten, and revered, them for thousands of years. In their whole form, ancient and alternative grains, in addition to familiar grains such as wheat, oats, rice and corn, slowly are gaining a foothold in the American diet, providing significant health benefits and improving carbohydrates’ image. During the past century, manufacturing processes that have made common grains easier to cook, eat and store also have stripped them of nutrition. Overconsumption of these refined products have contributed to weight gain, type II diabetes and other health problems in our society. “That’s where we lost the connection between the basic grain and what we eat today,” said Roberta Gill, dietician at the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association. Instead of eliminating grains altogether, more people are being selective about what they eat, opting for products made with all the beneficial parts of grains and including whole grains in recipes. As a result, older adults and other Americans are getting many essential nutrients to help lower cholesterol and risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, type II diabetes and possibly some cancers. Whole grains also are a great source of fiber, easing digestion and helping prevent digestive problems. “There are a lot of good reasons for including them in your diet,” Gill said.
Getting to know grains Familiar grains such as wheat, corn, rice, rye and oats, in addition to barley, millet, sorghum and spelt (a type of wheat) are considered cereal grains because they come from grass plants. Amaranth, quinoa, flaxseed and buckwheat are considered alternative grains because they come from different kinds of plants and technically are not grains. Gluten-free grains for people who have celiac disease or are intolerant of wheat include rice, amaranth, quinoa, millet and buckwheat. A whole grain is the entire seed of the plant, made up of the bran, germ and endosperm. Refining typically removes the bran and germ, the most nutritious parts of the kernel containing protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and healthy fats. Refined wheat, for example, contains almost no fiber or vitamin E and only half of the kernel’s B vitamins, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Without the bran and germ, the starch from grains is digest quickly, causing a spike in blood sugar. Although products made with refined grains often are enriched with vitamins, they never are as beneficial as the original whole grain, Gill said. In their whole form, grains are super foods because they contain protein, carbohydrates, beneficial fats, vitamins and minerals, she said. Quinoa, which is native to South America and was a main part of the Inca diet, is known as the “mother of all grains” because it contains amino acids that make it a “complete protein.” “I don’t know of any other plant foods that are a complete

protein,” Gill said.
Finding, cooking, eating The 2005 U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend Americans get half of their grains from whole grains. Individuals nine and older should get at least three “ounceequivalents” or servings of whole grains daily. A serving can be a half-cup of cooked grains, cereal or pasta or a slice of bread, for example. Whole grains can be processed (cracked, split or ground) and still be beneficial, as long as the most important parts of the kernel remain in the product. Some products may mix whole grains with refined grains. The key is to read labels carefully, looking for whole grains as one of the first ingredients in a product and not rely on advertising, Gill said. “It’s not [producers’] job to educate you, it’s your job to educate you,” she said. Whole grains should be one of the first ingredients in a

product. To make the search easier, the Whole Grains Council created a Whole Grains stamp, which appears on many products containing at least a half serving or 8 grams of whole grains. Many alternative and ancient grains can be purchased in bulk at health food stores such as Bamboo Market in Steamboat Springs. Packaged versions, though usually more expensive, are becoming more common in grocery stores. They usually are found near the rice or gourmet rice sections. Cooking time for whole grains ranges from about five minutes to two hours. It’s important to rinse all grains before cooking to remove debris or residue (quinoa’s residue can make it taste bitter). Alternative and ancient grains typically have a nutty or distinctive flavor that is more intense that the taste of common grains. Meat, vegetables, fresh or dried fruit, nuts and seeds, herbs, citrus juice or vinegar, olive oil and honey are among foods that
liven up the flavor of plain grains and are found in many whole grain recipes. The Whole Grains Council suggests using whole grains such as barley, brown rice, millet and quinoa in risottos, pilafs and other rice-like dishes or adding them to soups. Add some oats to ground beef or yogurt for a quick source of fiber or eat popcorn (amaranth also can be popped) instead of potato chips and other less healthy snacks. Less adventurous individuals easily can incorporate whole grains into their diets by opting for whole grain bread, crackers and cereals or using whole grain rice, pasta, flour and meal, which they also can mix with refined versions. This article includes information from “Healthy Eating: Tips for a Healthy Diet,” at www.helpguide.org, the Harvard School of Public Health www. hsph.harvard.edu and “Ancient and Alternative Grains,” from Today’s Dietician.

Senior John Cutter studies in the commons area at Steamboat Springs High School on Friday afternoon. Cutter is one of the seniors who already has made plans for college after graduation — he will be attending the University of San Diego.
Deadline for local scholarships is April 15 College continued from 3 ed,” he said. “And it’s not for everybody.” College and Careers Counselor Gayle Dudley said students still are working on scholarship requests – the deadline for local scholarships is April 15 — and most students are narrowing down their choices. She said College Friday was a good chance for students to talk to their teachers about colleges because “they don’t normally think of teachers as people,” she laughed. Other students, like Cody
Poirot, have everything figured out. Poirot said he has decided to attend the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley, where he will major in musical theater. He said he initially was concerned about the cost of college, but once he narrowed down his choices and looked at the finances of each, it wasn’t hard. “I worried for a long time because I also applied for Washington University,” he said. “Now that I know where I’m going … UNC is not very expensive at all.” Once colleges have made
acceptance and financial aid offers, Leech said, it’s all in the students’ hands. “I just encourage them to do the best they can, and the choice is theirs,” he said. — To reach Zach Fridell, call 871-4208 or e-mail zfridell@steamboatpilot.com

The 2009 municipal election will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Centennial Mall, 1111 W. Victory Way, in Craig. Up for election will be four Craig City Council seats and the mayor’s seat. Six candidates are running for council: incumbents Byron Willems, Terry Carwile and Gene Bilodeau, who was appointed in February 2008 to fill Rod Compton’s vacated seat; and hopefuls Francisco Reina, Jennifer Riley and Joe Bird. All voters may vote for four council candidates. The top four vote getters among the candidates will take positions on the council. Three of the available council seats are four-year terms and the other is a two-year term.
The shorter term is the remainder of Compton’s tenure. According to the Craig City Charter, an appointment to fill a vacated council seat is good until the next city election. The fourth highest vote getter will win the shorter term. Mayor Don Jones is running unopposed for his third consecutive term. This will be the last consecutive term Jones is eligible for. He would have to sit out one election to run again. Officials said they hope more local voters participate in this election than in other recent years. It remains to be seen if the election enthusiasm shown in the November 2008 general election, when roughly 70 percent of registered county voters cast a vote, will carry over to Tuesday’s ballot. Voting records show that participation has not passed 700

Hayden shows well at state Trio of Hayden wrestlers places high Joel Reichenberger PILOT & TODAY STAFF
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
Ryan Domson led the way as the Hayden Middle School wrestling team wrapped up its season Friday and Saturday at the state tournament in Denver. Hayden sent a large squad of 16 wrestlers to the tournament, and Domson, with a second-place finish in the 135-pound bracket, was one of three to place. “The kids wrestled really well. We’re really proud of them,” Hayden coach Dallas Robinson said. “It was really tough competition, but our kids were extraordinary.” Domson was joined in medaling by Nate Speech, who was fourth at 152 pounds, and T-Lane Mazzola in fifth at 95 pounds. “Just to have those three guys up there was great,” Robinson said. “There were a lot of fantastic athletes up there. They looked like some of the best wrestlers you see at the high school level.” A strong performance Friday had the squad in a great position Saturday morning and set the stage for the weekend. “It was great. All the kids came out well, and we got a lot of pins,” Robinson said. Domson put together the best run, but he couldn’t quite pull off a win in the championship match, falling, 10-4, to Ethan Wright, of Fowler. “It was really close,” Robinson said. “He’d come off a lot of matches during the day and had a little fatigue and didn’t wrestle as well as he normally does. Still, he wrestled his heart out.” Although team results weren’t available Sunday, Robinson said his squad did achieve one goal. It scored more points than Hotchkiss, the only team that finished ahead of the Tigers in the regional tournament. “All the kids wrestled extraordinary,” he said. “It was a different kind of wrestling out there, a high level. We went out and held our own.”

David Freshman plays Saturday at a post-race event for Cody’s Challenge, a randonee ski race that helped raise money for the Cody St. John foundation. St. John, a 29year-old Steamboat ski patroler who died after a car accident two years ago, donated five organs. Freshman received his heart.
Memories remain
Cody’s Challenge randonee ski race a rousing success Joel Reichenberger PILOT & TODAY STAFF

For Kyle Lawton, it was an important day that started with what seemed like disaster. For David Freshman, it was an emotional day that began with a trip, and for Candy St. John, it was a potentially
tough day than began with high hopes. As the sun set across from Steamboat Ski Area hours later, all would agree: the day turned out almost perfectly.
Teamwork pays off Lawton spent two days mapping a course and several
months dreaming the details for the Cody’s Challenge Randonee Endurance Race, an event meant to recognize his friend and co-worker Cody St. John, who died in 2007 from injuries sustained in a car accident. He woke up Saturday morning and his plans were in ruins. The gondola and the Thun-
derhead Express chairlift at the ski area were closed as strong winds blasted Mount Werner. A randonee race sends competitors uphill on skis, so a lift isn’t necessarily needed, but Lawton couldn’t even get to the starting line, scheduled to be at the top of Thunderhead. See Cody, page 20
Heels, Spartans prepare for title game Eddie Pells

The bracket says North Carolina vs. Michigan State. At times, though, the Tar Heels may feel like they’re going up against something more than just another basketball team. From the coach on down, the Spartans (31-6) know a win
in the NCAA title game on a court 90 miles from their campus won’t fix the state’s economic freefall, won’t put anybody back to work. But there will be 72,000 people in Ford Field, site of the Final Four, come tonight. Most will be rooting for Michigan State.
And winning, as they say, can be contagious. “When you go through hard times, you pray for something to get you out,” Spartans guard Travis Walton said. “I’m sure they didn’t pray for Michigan State to get to the Final Four or the national championship game, but they probably have been praying to have things to take their mind off of it.”
Michigan ranks 51st out of 50 states (and District of Columbia) in the latest unemployment figures. Detroit is the hub of an auto industry on life support, a civic symbol of an economic system that has come off the tracks. That’s the backdrop for a game in which Michigan State See NCAA, page 20

“So, we had to start at the bottom of Heavenly Daze,” he said. “It actually made it easier on me. It took the stress out of it because all we could do is improvise.” A few quick changes to the course kept everything on track, and the race went off without a problem, especially for Lawton. He won the event, edging out a group of skiers he banded together with to break trail through the deep, fresh snow. It was a performance he said St. John, a friend from the Steamboat Ski Patrol, would have been proud of, even though he always opted for a snowboard instead of the skis the racers turned to. “It was teamwork that made it happen,” he said. “Cody would have liked everything. Anything Cody did, he did with the best of his ability. “He was excellent at everything.”

finds itself a 7 1/2-point underdog against a Carolina team that has “national champs” practically inked across its uniforms. Remember, this is the team that some thought could go undefeated this season when Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Danny Green all decided to return after a bad loss to Kansas at last year’s Final Four. Undefeated was never on coach Roy Williams’ list of goals. Winning a championship, though? Always. “If you thought it was easy, you don’t know what you’re talking about,” Williams said. “It’s college basketball. There hasn’t been an undefeated team since ’76, and there have been some really, really good teams. I think this year there were eight or 10 teams or 12, I haven’t studied it, that could be playing (tonight).” But it will be North Carolina (33-4), the preseason No. 1 and top seed in the South Regional, against Michigan State, a lesshyped and more overlooked No.
2 seed out of the Midwest. Though Michigan State coach Tom Izzo won’t sell his team short — “you don’t get this far on grit,” he said — he also knows the deal. This is a rematch of a game North Carolina won, 9863, on Dec. 3 in the same building. Anyone who turned the channel, or turned the page, on that one gets a pass. Izzo certainly has. Michigan State was exhausted (fourth game in seven nights), injured (Goran Suton was out and Delvon Roe was hurting) and not playing near its current level back then, though the coach figures if the Spartans had been in better shape, they still would have lost by 20. “If we play good and they play good, we’re losing. That’s the way I look at it,” Izzo said. “I mean, I don’t look at that in the negative. They are the best team in the country and have earned that ranking probably over the last year and a half.” And, as both coaches ac-
knowledge, the Spartans have a knack for taking opponents out of their ’A’ game. See Michigan State’s 82-73 win against Connecticut on Saturday. “I mean, they’re not exactly Charlie’s Donut Team,” Williams said. Williams figures if North Carolina plays poorly in the rematch, it won’t be because of the crowd. This is a team that loves playing in hostile environments and succeeds at it, too. The Tar Heels have gone 67-14 away from home in the four years since Hansbrough and the seniors arrived in 2005, the season after Carolina’s last championship. Hansbrough has never lost to Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. He’s 5-2 in other road games in the state of North Carolina, 3-0 in Maui, 6-0 in Florida and, yes, 1-0 at Ford Field. “I’ve tried to forget that whole week,” Izzo said. “In fact, if you ask me, 2008 never happened. I’m trying to move ahead to 2009.”
David Freshman: This is about Cody’s spirit

Candy St. John also thought her son would have loved the festivities. A post-race party kicked off Saturday afternoon at the Bear River Bar & Grill. Cody’s friends and family members from all across the country traveled for the event. For $20, they got to eat as much chili as they could, throw back a few drinks and listen to live music. All the money is being raised
for a foundation in Cody’s name that hopes to help ski patrollers with dreams similar to those Cody had when he died. The wreck happened as he was on his way to the University of Wyoming for a nursing program orientation. “Cody left a wonderful impression. That’s why everyone’s here,” Candy said. “It’s a great day. A very positive day.” The event helped the foundation toward its goal of raising $100,000. Combined with a summer bike ride in Wyoming and a benefit clam bake in St. John’s native Maryland, Candy said she’s seen her son’s spirit carry on. Cody’s girlfriend at the time of the accident agreed. “It’s been two years since he died, so we decided, let’s do something,” said Katrene Lewis, who helped some in the planning of Saturday’s event. She didn’t compete, but she caught up with many friends. She served as a ski patroller in Steamboat last year in memory of St. John. “He would have loved it,” she said about the day. “He would have loved everyone coming together — the people from the Ski Patrol, from the East Coast and from all around Colorado.”
More than a memory Cody St. John never knew David Freshman, and until six months ago, Freshman had never heard of St. John, either. But Freshman’s extensive

search eventually revealed that it was St. John who had saved his life two years ago. Five of St. John’s organs were donated after his death, and Freshman received his heart. A professional musician, the 52-year-old Aurora resident picked up a guitar and played with the band Saturday. He broke away and ripped through guitar solos and came off the stage and played while he danced in front of the crowd. “This is overwhelming,” he said, looking across the bar, packed with St. John’s loved ones. “This gives me an understanding where this heart I have came from.” He played a song he’d written in memory of the 29-yearold snowboarding ski patroller who, even two years after his death, could fill a room. “This is about Cody’s spirit,” Freshman said, introducing his work. “You all know about his spirit, and now, so do I. I’m talking to you because of it.” — To reach Joel Reichenberger, call 871-4253 or e-mail jreichenberger@steamboatpilot.com

Not only was it his first victory in the Lone Star state, it was the first time Gordon had won anywhere since October 2007 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte. During interviews in Victory Lane at Texas, Gordon had to sneak a peek at the logos on his car to remind himself of everybody he needed to thank. It had been a long time, especially by his standards. Rick Hendrick wasn’t there, so Gordon tried to talked to him by cell phone from Victory Lane. Also missing were his wife and daughter. “I’m just thrilled. I can’t wait to get home to Ingrid and Ella,” Gordon said. “I know (Ella) was saying ‘Go poppy go’ all day long. I hate that they couldn’t come.” Gordon won by 0.542 seconds with an average speed of 146.372 mph for his 82nd career victory, one behind Cale Yarborough for fifth on the all-time list. Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip are tied for third on that list with 84 victories.

Edwards, who was going for three in a row at Texas after last year getting to do his celebratory backflips twice by sweeping both races, finished 10th after passing Gordon to lead only nine laps late in the race. It was the 17th Cup race at Texas, the track where the fourtime Cup champion has the only two last-place finishes in his 552 career starts. One of the 43rd-place finishes came last spring before he was the runner-up to Edwards in the fall race after winning the pole. “How ironic is this that when we go into this streak and we end it here in Texas, a place that’s just eluded us for so long,” Gordon said. “Incredible team effort. This whole year has been amazing. What a great car. I’ve never had a car like this at Texas. We finally had one and put it in position.” The only track Gordon now hasn’t won at is Homestead. He will have to wait until the season finale in November for a chance to change that.
“Mike has proven to be an invaluable business advisor to our growing firm. His patience, professionalism and experience has allowed us to work out personal issues and focus on guiding a company that will provide opportunity for not only the owners, but also for our employees.”

Jeff Gordon had gone so long without winning a race, that he picked up a new trick or two watching other drivers celebrate. No, not a backflip a la Carl Edwards. After the obligatory burnout on the frontstretch for his first victory ever at Texas, Gordon one that ended his career-high 47-race winless drought in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Gordon pulled up to the startfinish line and got the checkered flag to take on a long-awaited victory lap. “It was the coolest. It was like winning for the very first time,” Gordon said. “Things have changed since I won a race. ... That’s the first time I’ve ever carried a checkered flag in NASCAR. I used to do that in quarter-midgets when I was 8.” Then, after doing another burnout on the backstretch, Gordon finally got to drive into Victory Lane at Texas, where winners get cowboy hats and fire six-shooters into the air. “This is a huge relief but also very exciting,” Gordon said. “If we can win at Texas, I feel like we can win anywhere.” Gordon, already the season points leader with four top-five finishes in the first six races, beat Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson to win for the first time on the 1 1/2-mile high-banked Texas track — leaving only one active track he hasn’t won in his No. 24 Chevrolet.

Colleen Grubbs, along with her husband Ken Grubss, tears down pieces of the ceiling in a house in New Orleans as part of a mission trip sponsored by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The church is planning a mission trip to Romania in May and will hold a fundraiser at Steamboat Smokehouse on Tuesday evening.

ers urged families to have as many children as possible, and many were abandoned when the system and economy collapsed. Now, the orphanages are filled with developmentally challenged youths from infancy to age 16. Romanian law prohibits international adoption, and children from the Soviet era continue, as adults, to have more children than they can support, Buttery said. The Steamboat Springs volunteers will be helping at the orphanage by teaching English, playing simple motor-skills games and helping the children develop socially. “The purpose is to share Christ with one another and with others,” he said. “My students and my adults can be in relationship” with the Romanian people. Leah Berdine said the trip to Romania fit well with her desire to help people. “I have been on a couple other
mission trips with St. Paul’s and when I heard about it, it sounded like a great experience and something that will be a good fit for me,” said Berdine, 16. “I really like going out and serving people and showing God’s love and just doing good things.” The mission costs $1,800 per person and each member of the mission trip has been sending out letters to family and close friends to solicit help. On Tuesday night, Steamboat Smokehouse will host a fundraiser for the group as 10 percent of sales after 5 p.m. will go toward the mission fund. All money raised will go toward mission funds, and the church already has another mission planned for later in the year. In June, the youth will embark on a “hodgepodge” mission trip that will have them travel to Salt Lake City; Vancouver, B.C.; Sacramento, Calif.; and many places in between as they stop and help different locations along the way.
If you go What: Munching for Missions, a fundraiser for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church mission trips When: 5 p.m. until close Tuesday Where: Steamboat Smokehouse The Smokehouse will donate 10 percent of the sales after 5 p.m. to the mission fund. For more information or to make a donation, call 879-0925.
High school students still can sign up for the June trip by contacting Buttery at the church. As Berdine prepares for the trip, with a nine-week devotional program with the trip and final fundraising efforts, she said she’s not sure what to expect in Romania, but if it’s like her previous mission trips to New Orleans and Juarez, Mexico, she knows it will be rewarding. “It’s really neat to see how your love and kindness affects other people. And how it affects me,” she said. — To reach Zach Fridell, call 871-4208 or e-mail zfridell@steamboatpilot.com
