Partners in Routt County ready year-end projects Students in Hayden after-school groups show off their talents Zach Fridell

Students in Partners in Routt County’s after-school group at Hayden Middle School like to paint. Sometimes that paint goes on the bench the students are constructing. More often, it seems, the paint goes everywhere else. “I’m going to paint your face,” seventh-grader Annastasia Bosley threatened her fellow painters, wearing a badge of paint on her own face. The five students painted and began construction on a bench for the school during a session
Wednesday night. They used old skis, salvaged from the school’s ski swap and wood shop, to piece together the outdoor furniture for their school. “They don’t get much chance for creative expression, since they don’t take art until eighth grade,” school-based mentor Jessica Schnittka said. Students in the Hayden High School wood shop prepared the bench pieces. The middle schoolers were in charge of painting the wooden base and attaching skis to the outside. Partners programs across Routt County also are gathering momentum for year-end events

coordinated by mentors. Hayden mentor Susie Huser used the creative output of 25 students to create Tiger Talk, a literary magazine for the school with proceeds from extra copies going toward group programs. She and Schnittka also are organizing a bake sale to gather money for plants, shrubs and trees. On April 29, in coordination with Yampatika and the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps, the sixth graders and “Green Team” from Hayden will go on a snowshoe hike on Rabbit Ears Pass to learn about snowmelt and runoff. Closer to home, the entire middle school will gather on May 12 for Global Youth Service Day. Students will use the national event to work on landscaping at The Haven Assisted Living Center and near Dry Creek Park. In the meantime, the students will use lunches and after-school sessions to finish their bench, and perhaps to wash the paint out of their hair.

Kenyan Minister of Justice Martha Karua announced her resignation Monday. Karua is considered to have a legitimate shot at becoming president of Kenya in 2012, and her resignation signals her need to separate herself from the corruption and instability of the current govern-
ment. Other members of the Kenyan parliament have resigned in recent days, as well. Kofi Annan, the former head of the Walker United Nations, has announced he is prepared to disclose a list of members of the Kenyan parliament who have been found to be responsible for inciting the terrible ethnic violence that shook Kenya last year after flawed national elections. He has given the Kenyan government a choice — either hold tribunals within Kenya to prosecute these members of parliament, or with his disclosure of their names, they will be brought before international human rights court in Geneva.
Annan has said he will wait until late July for Kenya to act on its own. The vice president was quoted as saying Annan should mind his own business, but thanks for the help in saving the country from ethnic genocide last year. Of course, the problem is that all of the people on this list (many of the names have been leaked; they are no surprise, including the member of parliament for Narok, where the rescue center is located) are powerful, connected and have a well-constructed wall of protection around them. All government officials do, don’t they? It is highly unlikely that the Kenyan government is going to send its own down the river. So, the general expectation is

The suggestions were as simple as adding window displays and as complex as creating a Mainstreet group. “Hayden has some wonderful opportunities, but what it doesn’t have is a lot of resources,” said Christy Culp, of DOLA, who discussed promotions. “So it’s imperative that the resources you have are put to the best use.” One challenge is that residents don’t know what services
are available, she said. Groups in town must make people aware of what they can buy in Hayden and how spending locally helps the town, Culp said. “As small of a town as Hayden is, people should know what’s available here,” she told the crowd. Culp encouraged the town to create unified identities and causes for its events. It could, for example, use Hayden Daze as a benefit for a new park, she said. The town also should consider marshaling its civic forc-

Experts helping Hayden focus and form its downtown area heaped praise on the community Tuesday evening. They lauded residents’ pride and involvement in the discussion. They also joked about trying to move through the presentation and leave time for talking — predicting that opinionated Hayden residents would have a lot to say. “It was absolutely fabulous,” said Katherine Correll, executive director of Downtown Colorado. “Your input is really important. The energy you expressed and the dedication you have to this town was really inspiring.” Correll and a team spent Monday and Tuesday meeting with residents, business owners, civic groups and others across Hayden. The Community Revitalization Partnership was a joint effort of the town, the Hayden Economic Development Commission, the Hayden Chamber of Commerce and the state Department of Local Affairs. The case against David Jensen, accused of growing marijuana in his Old Town home, was dismissed Monday in Routt County Court. Carl Stahl, Routt County deputy district attorney, said Wednesday that all charges were dropped against Jensen because of “a lack of evidence.” Stahl said Jensen, 50, frequently has been out of the state and out of the country for employment reasons. Stahl said that to his knowledge, Jensen was not in the state
Feb. 7, when law enforcement reportedly seized 48 marijuana plants and about 8 pounds of dried and processed marijuana from the home of David Jensen and his wife, Marie Jensen, on Ninth Street in Steamboat Springs. Stahl said the case against Marie Jensen, 54, is continuing and scheduled for a status update May 13. Stahl said a felony charge might be added to Marie Jensen’s case. Felony summonses were issued Feb. 24 for each of the Jensens. They were charged with Class 4 felony cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell or
distribute, and Class 5 felony possession of 8 ounces or more of marijuana. Each also was charged with Class 3 felony possession of a Schedule I controlled substance for a small amount of psilocybin, or hallucinogenic mushrooms, found at their home during a Feb. 7 party. Marie Jensen also was not at the house when law enforcement arrived that night. Police ultimately cited 16 juveniles at the party for possessing alcohol. Marie Jensen reportedly has a medical marijuana license, but investigators say the couple was in possession of more marijuana than allowed by law.

Property in Moffat County — including all residential, commercial, industrial and vacant land — increased in value by an average of about 20 percent this year, Moffat County Assessor Suzanne Brinks said. Property owners can expect to receive a notice near May 4 stating the new value. The values will apply to taxes paid in 2010 and 2011. Values are directly tied to the amount of taxes a prop-
erty owner will pay. If the local and state mill levies remain the same for 2010 — they’re set each December — then the average property tax bill in Moffat County will increase by the same 20 percent, Moffat County Assessor Suzanne Brinks said. Her office will be accepting residents’ protests through June 1. “We’ll address anyone’s concerns,” she said. “That’s why we’re here.” However, citizens cannot protest their taxes because they’re too high, Brinks added. They are encouraged to protest their values when they believe a
mistake has been made — such as misclassifying a residence as a business — but the Assessor’s Office does not set tax levels. To help explain what’s coming, the Assessor’s Office hosted a free public forum Tuesday morning at the Moffat County Courthouse for business owners. Brinks said the forum was designated for business appraisals because they are more complicated than residential. State law requires assessors to appraise residential properties based on their market value, the amount paid for purSee Craig, page 12
I’m trying to bring Kenya girls into the world Walker continued from 2 that August will be a very difficult time here in Kenya. The two rival political parties, which are barely functioning together in a “coalition” government, are separately holding rallies in the next few days. These rallies often are where the trouble starts, because strong party and ethnic rhetoric takes over.

I read the news about Karua’s resignation in the newspaper with Caro, one of the older girls here at the rescue center. Caro is in her last year of secondary school and spends every minute studying. We have agreed that she will take a short break at 5 p.m. each day so that we can read the newspaper together. She is very savvy, loves politics, and her perspective is spot on.

She picked up on the notion that Karua needs to separate herself from the current situation in order to have a shot in 2012 before a journalist from the Christian Science Monitor told me the same thing in an e-mail. There’s no doubt these girls are bright. But later, while reading an article about North Korea, Caro asked me whether people who live in Russia are Arabs. It provides a good example of how insulated these girls are from the larger world. As our conversation turned to Cuba, I had to explain communism. Imagine explaining to a Maasai girl from the bush why we find “communism” so abhorrent — exactly what is wrong with the notion that people who have (far) more than they need to survive can help those who do not? So, I find myself in the role of trying to bring these girls into the world as well as bring the world to them. To contact Mary Walker, email mewalker99@yahoo.com

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?
Victory at sea Paul Greenberg
TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
Home is the sailor, home from sea. Capt. Richard Phillips, his five-day ordeal happily concluded, has been rescued in the finest tradition of the United States Navy, and his captors dealt with, effectively and summarily. In order to save his ship and crew, Capt. Phillips had made himself hostage to the cutthroats who’d seized his unarmed (but scarcely undefended) ship. But in the end, it was Capt. Phillips who had Greenberg taken the pirates hostage. For they found themselves afloat in the Indian Ocean off the Horn of Africa in a little lifeboat, tied to an American warship and running out of food, water, fuel and strength. The pirates had demanded $2 million and their own release in exchange for the captain’s life. They would get what they deserved.
Once the U.S. destroyer Bainbridge had arrived on the scene, the brigands’ fate was sealed whether they realized it or not. Three snipers, U.S. Navy Seals, waited on the fantail of the destroyer, under instructions not to fire unless the captain’s life seemed in imminent danger. At the end of the fifth day of this saga of the sea, two of the remaining three bandits (a fourth had turned himself in for medical attention) made their fatal error, poking their heads out of the rear hatch of the lifeboat, giving the snipers a clear shot. The third could be seen menacing the bound captain with his AK-47. That was all the Seals needed to act. Three snipers, three perfect shots in the head. All fired at dusk from a distance using night-vision scopes. End of story. Beginning of celebration. There was a time when America celebrated its heroes, when victorious troops marched in victory parades and every schoolchild knew the names of heroic figures such as Richard Phillips. Let us revive those times. When the
destroyer Bainbridge, which might as well have been christened The Defiant, makes it home, let sirens wail, horns blast and crowds cheer. For a nation that does not honor its victories may soon enough not have many. Some say these are not heroic times. Capt. Richard Phillips, the crew of the Maersk Alabama and the U.S. Navy demonstrate otherwise. Readers looking for their daily dose of defeatism in the midst of this outrage could depend on the New York Times to provide it. On Friday, a front-page article in the Times (“Navy’s Standoff with Pirates/ Shows U.S. Power Has Limits”) explained that any chance of preventing these incidents was limited: “WASHINGTON — The Indian Ocean standoff between an $800 million United States Navy destroyer and four pirates bobbing in a lifeboat showed the limits of the world’s most powerful miltary as it faces a booming pirate See Greenberg, page 9

Rep. Bobby Rush is the only political officeholder who can say that he beat President Barack Obama. But he doesn’t say it much. Not now. “Yeah, a lot of people remind me of that,” the South Side Chicago Democrat said when I reminded him of 2000, when he handily beat back then-state Sen. Obama’s challenge. “But I don’t remind him of that.” Oh? Why not? Again Rush laughed. Page “He’s president now,” the congressman said. Oh, yeah. Right. There are many other things for Rush to talk about — like Cuba. Obama has lifted restrictions on travel to Cuba for Cuban Americans. They’re allowed to send money, too. Next, the Obama administration hopes, comes access to

cell phones and satellite TV. Then, I hope, comes an end to this country’s 47-year-old Cold War relic of a trade embargo against Cuba. But not, I also hope, without some mention of the dozens of journalists, librarians, human rights activists and others who are behind bars in Cuba because they dared to call for more democracy than the Castro regime approves. We should dare to ask that they at least be allowed visits by the International Red Cross and other basic human rights before we cheerfully drop whatever leverage the embargo offers. Rush recently traveled to the island with six other members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Three of them, including Rush, were granted an audience with El Jefe himself, Fidel Castro, who has ceded the presidential job to his kid brother Raul for health reasons. “I fully and enthusiastically support
the president’s announcement,” Rush told me. Then, he disappointed me. “There are some additional changes that we need to take, but I would not put the litmus tests of political prisoners at the top of the agenda ... or even democratization at the top as an iron-clad condition before we normalize trade relations with Cuba.” Ay, porque no? Why not? “I believe the issue of political prisoners, dissidents in Cuba will be addressed at the proper time because people will address them,” he said. “They need to be addressed. But right now, the blockade is a failure.” Ah, here we go. The Cuba debate is like America’s race debate. Voices in the reasonable middle get drowned out by the extremes. Embargo supporters don’t want to talk about its ineffectiveness. They’d rather talk about the awfulness of the Castro regime. Their left-progressive counterparts don’t want to talk about See Page, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

VIEWPOINTS young United States of America followed the lead of European powers and routinely paid tribute to the pirates operating along the Barbary Coast out of Algiers, Morocco, Tripoli and Tunis. Piracy was their trade, the same one now flourishing off the African coast. But by 1803, a new American president — Thomas Jefferson — had had enough. Although he was a man of peace who proposed to economize on the country’s defenses, he ordered a naval squadron to the shores of Tripoli to resolve this little matter. Forcefully. That’s just what Lieut. Stephen Decatur and his Marines proceeded to do, imposing a blockade on the pirates’ home port and, eventually, a series of formal peace treaties on all these rogue states. End of piracy. At least in that time and place. Mr. Jefferson’s is a precedent worth following. And a tradition worth reviving.

The black caucus members said they were eager to have dialogue with the island’s many Afro-Cubans. Imagine the dialogue they could have stirred up during their five-day visit if they had spoken to Afro-Cuban dissidents. Jorge Luis Garcia Perez was available. He was on a monthlong hunger strike against various government abuses. The renowned activist also known as “Antunez” has been called the island’s “Nelson Mandela” since his release from prison in 2007
and continues his writing — in Spain. But that leaves 21 journalists still behind bars in Cuba, by CPJ’s count, making that island the world’s second-leading jailer of journalists, after China. That’s one reason why I was disappointed to see the black caucus delegation lavish praise on the Castro brothers for their hospitality, yet ask for nothing on behalf of freedom and human rights. “Power concedes nothing without a demand,” Frederick Douglass wrote. “It never did, and it never will.” I hope the Obama administration keeps that in mind as it moves toward a sensible Cuba policy. Politics don’t always bring what you want after serving a 17-year sentence for saying things the government didn’t like. But side trips would have jeopardized the visitors’ meeting with Fidel. That’s how it worked when I wandered off my government-approved itinerary in 2002 to visit independent journalists on behalf of the New Yorkbased Committee to Protect Journalists, of which I am a board member. Raul Rivero, one of the more celebrated journalists with whom I met, later was imprisoned in Fidel’s 2003 roundup of more than 75 dissidents and independent journalists. While surveillance aircraft kept watch on the pirates and their captive, the Navy task force that had steamed more than 300 miles to go to the captain’s aid showed no sign of confronting the pirates.” To which the U.S.N. now has responded, in effect: Oh, yeah? There always will be those who think self-defense entirely too hasty a concept. To quote Vice President Noli de Castro, of the Philippines, during this ordeal, “any military action is best done in consultation with the United Nations to gain the support and cooperation of other countries.” Like Sudan, whose government is the source of the genocide in Darfur? Or maybe the non-government of Somalia, the pirates’ haven? If the UN had been consulted, doubtless its “Security” Council still would be debating,
deliberating and generally delaying as part of a years-long process. Much as it has dealt with the massacres still proceeding in Darfur. Or rather not dealt with them. Thank you, Mr. Vice President of the Philippines, but some of us would just as soon consult with the U.S. Navy. It responds. With dispatch. Other foreign officials echoed the Philippine vice president’s advice, saying it’s unlikely that American action in this satisfying instance will discourage pirates off the Horn of Africa. Well, we know of three pirates who have been decidedly discouraged. They should no longer be a problem for ship traffic. If this doesn’t teach these brigands not to mess with the United States of America, nothing will. And because nothing may, let’s look to that most reliable guide to the future for an example to follow: the past. In the infancy of this Republic, a

Intrawest goes into survival mode CEO Bill Jensen: All options on the table for refinancing company’s debt Bob Berwyn
SUMMIT DAILY NEWS
BRECKENRIDGE
When Bill Jensen left Vail Resorts for Vancouver, B.C., last spring to take the helm as chief executive officer for rival Intrawest, the ski industry was flying high on its way to a record year of skier visits. Since then, the U.S. economy dived, and the fortunes of the Canadian resort and real estate
company took a turn for the worse. Jensen, in Breckenridge this week for meetings at Intrawest’s Copper Mountain Resort, said Jensen future financing for the highly leveraged company could require selling some assets. Before taking over at Intrawest, Jensen served a suc-

in the past year. The company came close to a last-minute deadline before reaching a one-year deal to refinance $1.7 billion in debt last October. According to Bloomberg News, the company took another hit earlier this month, when it claimed it lost $125 million to alleged Ponzi schemer Marc Dreier. Jensen said Copper MounSee Intrawest, page 13

cessful stint with Vail Resorts, first in Breckenridge, then in Vail as head of that mountain and later all the company’s Colorado resorts. He also headed up the National Ski Areas Association as chair for a few years in the mid- and late-1990s. Intrawest now is owned by New York-based Fortress Investment Group, a public hedge fund and private equity firm that’s taken a drubbing
relationship with the company. But council members found it wise to diversify and work with a company whose core business is softball. “I think it’s good to put our eggs in a couple different baskets,” Councilwoman Cari Hermacinski said. City Council also approved a 25-team American Baseball Association youth tournament for Memorial Day Weekend that Hermacinski called “a nobrainer.” “It fits right in with what we’ve already got,” she said. Director of Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Chris Wilson said he has made it clear to the American Baseball Association that weather conditions are unreliable that early in the season. “They understand that risk
and are willing to take it,” Wilson said. Mashaw warned that a canceled tournament could result in disgruntled visitors who won’t have fond memories of Steamboat and may demand lodging refunds. Councilman Scott Myller joined Bentley in voting against the youth tournament for the reasons cited by Mashaw. Although initially opposed to the city contracting with other sports tourism companies, Triple Crown President Dave King has softened his stance, Wilson said. Wilson said King has informed the city that he understands the tough economic situation and that whatever decision it makes will not harm its relationship with Triple Crown. — To reach Brandon Gee, call 871-4210 or e-mail bgee@steamboatpilot.com
State audits values annually Craig continued from 6 chases of the same type of home. Other properties have different formulas that can be applied at the assessor’s discretion. In all cases, the Assessor’s Office cannot control what to value a certain property, said John Zimmerman, a commercial appraiser contracted to handle Moffat County valuations for the past six years who lead the presentation. “The values are what the

I know a lot of you might not believe this, but the assessor does not want to overvalue your property.” The Assessor’s Office also cannot “cheat” and lower property values, because the state audits the county’s each year and would increase them regardless, Zimmerman said.

Democratic legislators are offering an alternate package of budget cuts to avoid eliminating $300 million in funding to Colorado colleges and universities, according to plans obtained Wednesday. On Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee delayed action on a bill that would Ritter have ordered Pinnacol Assurance to turn over $500 million from its approximately $700 million surplus. That bill now is expected to die. Gov. Bill Ritter said the plan to take money from the statecreated workers compensation insurance company’s surplus is
off the table, and instead he and lawmakers will focus on other steps to avoid devastating cuts to higher education. “Members of my staff and I have tried in good faith to reach an agreement with Pinnacol. However, there remain too many unresolved issues and questions for Colorado citizens and Pinnacol shareholders and customers,” Ritter said. The new package of cuts calls for raising as much as $354 million by postponing a major water project, increasing tobacco taxes and cutting $187 million from the budget, including reductions in medical provider rates and requiring state employees to take 10 unpaid furlough days. Republican House Minority Leader Mike May said Republicans want a larger cut than the $300 million needed for higher education in the event the state’s budget crisis worsens
after the legislative session ends May 6. The proposals drew praise from business leaders, who strongly opposed the Pinnacol takeover. “We applaud the governor and legislative leadership for this responsible step toward balancing the budget,” said Travis Berry, spokesman for the Colorado Competitive Council. Rep. Jack Pommer, D-Boulder, said the Legislature may wait and study the various Pinnacol proposals this summer. He said any help from the company would come too late to help balance next year’s budget. “It looks as though it might not be the ideal bill to balance our budget,” Pommer said. The revised plan will be submitted today as an amendment when the House begins debate on the budget bill.

Real estate hit hard But real estate and development, which has been a huge part of the company’s business, is bogged down, with a tremendous amount of investment in non-resort properties, Jensen said. Intrawest, for example, owns undeveloped land at Copper that was highly valued just 12

tain and Winter Park performed well given current economic conditions, as did several of Intrawest’s Eastern resorts. The season was strong until Presidents Day, Jensen added, when destination visits declined dramatically. Despite a relatively strong winter performance by the company’s ski resorts, Intrawest has been in survival mode this season, Jensen said. “The reality is, in this global economic challenge, that we have to take every step to survive. We’re looking at all the options to reduce our debt,” Jensen said, asked to address rumors that Copper Mountain is for sale. “Copper is not one we want to sell,” Jensen continued. “There are some assets that are core to our business. ... But we’re exploring all the options.” Another path could be to finance some of the company’s various businesses independently, Jensen said. For example, Intrawest’s Quebec assets could be financed separately in Quebec, he explained.
months ago. But the extremely tight credit market has hit those holdings hard. “The parcels we have have a relatively low value. It’s hard to get value for it,” Jensen said, explaining how the company’s cash is tied up in land. In the current market, it’s hard to monetize those assets, he said, and Intrawest will scramble. But he added that the company will continue to meet its obligations, financial and otherwise. That includes an agreement with Summit County to end the practice of parking along Copper Road by the start of next season. Jensen said Intrawest will move ahead with some planned improvements at the Corn Lot, east of Highway 91, to reach that goal. And before moving ahead with any of the real estate plans approved by the county last summer, Copper will study its employee housing obligations. “That would be our first brick-and-mortar project,” Jensen said. Intrawest also plans to move ahead with a $7 million gondola at Steamboat Ski Area to move skiers from Wildhorse Meadows to the base of the mountain. And while Intrawest cut staffing this winter, the biggest reductions have come at the corporate level, Jensen said. There haven’t been cuts in grooming, ski school or in safety programs, he said, careful to explain that the budget-saving measures have not

Hints of stabilizing economy spark late rally NEW YORK
Wall Street is seeing an economic glass that’s half-full — again. Investors poured money into consumer product and financial companies Wednesday as they saw new signals that the recession could be easing its chokehold on the economy. Stocks increased in the last hour of trading after the Federal
Reserve released a report showing glimmers of hope in U.S. business conditions. The market had drifted for much of the day on poor readings on industrial production and consumer prices. The Dow Jones industrial average ended with a gain of 109 points. The late-day turnaround was typical of a market that has looked for reasons to push higher on hopes for a recovery ever since stocks skidded to 12-year lows in early March. A power-
ful five-week rally since then has pushed the market up more than 20 percent. Technology stocks lagged after Intel’s tightlipped forecast caused jitters about a corner of the market that had drawn buyers during the past month, but the tech-focused Nasdaq composite index managed a slender advance. Money flowed into stocks such as Procter & Gamble, which boosted its dividend, and American Express, which said

credit card defaults might be stabilizing. Stocks in hard-hit parts of the market such as airlines and home builders bounded higher as investors bet the economy might be finding its footing. “The market may not be seeing concrete signs of a recovery, but there are specks of light that we’re on the road to stabilization,” said Ryan Larson, senior equity trader at Voyageur Asset Management. The last-hour surged pushed the Dow up 109.44, or 1.4 per-
cent, to 8,029.62. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index increased 10.56, or 1.3 percent, to 852.06, and the Nasdaq edged up 1.08, or 0.1 percent, to 1,626.80. The Russell 2000 index increased 7.91, or 1.8 percent, to 461.13. An increasing stream of quarterly results from companies is likely to add to the market’s fractiousness as corporate earnings season gets under way this week.

The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freestyle moguls team finished the season on a high note during the weekend, tallying seven podium finishes in the year-end event at Vail. “It was awesome,” said Rob Day, the Winter Sports Club’s head NorAm freestyle coach. “It was great to see and definitely a wonderful way to end the season. Especially with all the people that did get the podium. They really did deserve it.” Highlighting Saturday’s single moguls event was Bo Randolph, who was last on his first run after skiing on a broken ski. Undeterred and last to go on his second run, Randolph put down a huge effort — again on a broken ski — to finish first. Rob Burden finished second and Michael Degrandis finished third. Other male finishers include Ryan Dyer in fifth and Dalton Lee in seventh. “There was no one touching those guys all day,” Day said. “Those were the guys that were on point.” On the women’s side, Rebecca Miller came in with a strong thirdplace finish. Brittany Loweree in fifth, Kristen Sweeney in eighth and Shelby Dyer in 11th all had strong showings. On Sunday in the dual moguls event, the Winter Sports Club again was well represented. Miller highlighted the day with her first career win. Loweree was fourth, and Shelby Dyer finished in sixth. “That was absolutely huge,” Day said about Miller’s win. “She was pumped. She was the best skier on Sunday. All the girls were holding back and not flipping.

Steamboat Springs High School senior lacrosse player Jasper Gantick never envisioned the scenario that has played out this season.
As a freshman, every opponent intimidated Gantick. But in his sophomore year, he realized he could hold his own, and by the time his junior year rolled around, he thought the Sailors could beat some teams and be on the right end of games more often than the wrong end.
But with Wednesday’s 12-1 win against the Grand Valley Lightning and a forfeit win against Durango, Gantick and his teammates are in line to achieve something many thought wouldn’t be possible four years ago: an undefeated regular season.
“I never envisioned a mountain lacrosse conference,” Gantick said after Senior Day at Gardner Field. “Undefeated? I certainly never saw that coming.” Although the work isn’t done See Lacrosse, page 20

Lengthy travel is a natural part of Western Slope League sports, but rarely is life on the road more regular than for track teams. That’s part of what makes today’s Hayden-hosted meet in Craig such a treat, Tigers track coach Barbara Manzanares said. The team will compete at
PREP TRACK home — or as close to it as Hayden High School’s dirt track will allow. “It’s a lot more exciting when you get to host it,” the team’s second-year coach said. “It’s more exciting for the kids, and it gives us some really good exposure.” Hayden hasn’t hosted a track meet for several years. Manzanares said the school
traditionally trades off a home meet every other year with North Park, but the Wildcats lost interest in the deal. Now, Hayden hopes to establish a tradition with its invitational. “We’re looking forward to it,” Manzanares said. Team to prepare for playoffs after today Lacrosse continued from 19 yet — Steamboat concludes the regular season at 4 p.m. today in Eagle Valley, a team it beat, 15-1, earlier this season — the full spectrum of how far the program and five seniors have come was on full display Wednesday. Playing their fourth game in five days — against a quality opponent, to boot — the Sailors played their most complete game of the year. Steamboat (13-0 overall) jumped up, 3-0, early in the first quarter on goals from Brian Bertrand, Gus Worden and Jack Spady. The team took a 5-0 lead midway through the second on two Garret Ehrick goals, but unlike most of the season, the team found it tough to get going in the offensive zone. But even after Grand Valley’s

President Barack Obama declared on tax-filing day that he aims to ease the dread of deadline day with “a simpler tax code that rewards work and the pur-
suit of the American dream.” “For too long, we’ve seen taxes used as a wedge to scare people into supporting policies that increased the burden on working people instead of helping them live their dreams,” Obama said. “That has to change, and that’s the work that we’ve begun.”
His words hardly were met with universal applause. Across the country, protesters met at statehouses and town squares to oppose Obama’s federal spending since he took office. Organizers said they wanted to channel the spirit of the Boston Tea Party’s rebellion.

lion deficit this year, the largest in history. During a visit to Steamboat Springs on Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, DColo., defended deficit spending in the short term to help put the nation’s economy back on track and said deficits will be reduced in future years. Those who attended Wednesday’s rally, however, weren’t buying the justifications. “We are tired of the government spending our money on stupid stuff that we don’t need,” said Lisa Richardson, 18, of Craig. Steamboat resident Shannon Steele said he attended the rally “just to stand up and be heard. Just to say we don’t agree with the current administration. We’re tired of the spending.” Moving forward, Akin said The Steamboat Institute will hold educational forums on the country’s “founding principles.” A public policy conference has been scheduled for August. Akin said he hopes to land nationally recognized speakers for the event.

tives lacked during last year’s presidential campaign — especially when compared to the highly visible efforts of local Democrats. In November, Akin said, “For whatever reason, you’re unlikely to see Republicans standing on the street corner waving a sign. It’s always been that way. … That’s probably something we need to get better at.” Apparently, a nerve has been struck. “We’ve had enough of your high taxes. We’ve had enough of your out of control government spending. And we’re not going to take it anymore,” SchubertAkin said to loud cheers at the rally. Volunteers passed out sheets with contact information for the White House, Colorado’s senators and U.S. Rep. John Salazar of Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, and urged attendees to pick up their phones after the rally.
“It’s the people’s chance to stand up and say we’ve had enough,” Schubert-Akin said. “If you leave here today and you don’t go out and take action, our time will have been wasted.” Similar tax day parties were held nationwide Wednesday. Americans for Prosperity, an economic advocacy group that promotes “a return of the federal government to its Constitutional limits,” supported the parties as a response to federal stimulus plans and economic recovery measures proposed by Congress and the president. “I think we need to throw the whole damn bunch out and start over,” local resident Carol Ward said. “I’m just in disbelief that so many people in this country think we can spend our way out of a deficit. … I am mad as hell.” Obama’s $3.6 trillion federal budget, which has been approved by Congress and will move forward a number of the president’s policy priorities, projects a $1.75 tril-
