Steamboat Springs High School students participating in Friday’s national Day of Silence made more of a statement and caused more discussion than if they had shouted all day long. About 25 Steamboat students put tape over their mouths and stayed silent for the entire day as a symbol of solidarity with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students who are harassed across the country. Working through the school’s chapter of the Gay-Straight Alliance, the students used notepads, dry-erase markers and other forms of nonverbal communication to make it through their final day before the school’s spring break. Parker Stegmaier, president of the club, said after the day was over that this was the first year the school has been able to participate in the national Day of Silence event. The day usually falls during the school’s spring break. At lunch, the students, who identified themselves by wearing black T-shirts decorated JOHN F. post-game press conference. I had never been to a game in Lambeau Field, let alone walked on the hallowed tundra. Strangely enough, it was AllPro Raiders’ tight end Dave Casper who unwittingly provided my shot at a press pass. I was covering the dairy farm beat for the Chilton Times-Journal, about 35 miles away from Green Bay. Casper, improbably, played his high school ball in Chilton. The game at Lambeau was a homecoming for Casper and a legitimate shot for me to wrangle press credentials from the Packers. I was inexperienced at photographing NFL games and covered my skinny butt during pre-game warm-ups by shooting every catch Casper made during the drills. The Raiders thoroughly dominated the game, rushing for more than 300 yards while holding the Pack to a single Chester Marcol field goal. Oakland won, 28-3. When I got my chance after the game, I asked Madden about Casper’s lone touchdown among three catches on the day.

Future hall-of-famers Dave Casper and John Madden, of the Oakland Raiders, confer on the sidelines during a game played against the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field on Sept. 17, 1978.

Madden was as deft in the way he handled the press as he later would be in the announcing booth. Casper had absorbed a beating that Sunday while blocking for Oakland’s punishing ground game. When I approached him

at his locker, he was slumped over, blood oozing from a cut on the bridge of his nose. The future Hall of Famer was in no mood to talk. When I asked him what it was like to come home to the stadium that was a big part of his youth, he

barely mumbled a reply. A little deflated, I salvaged my story by asking Casper’s famous teammates — including Jack Tatum, Cliff Branch and quarterback Ken Stabler See Ross, page 5

t’s an underappreciated fact that before John Madden became the world’s most gregarious sportscaster and secured his fortune by licensing his name to a remarkably popular video game, he was one hell of an NFL head coach. If you were born in the late 1970s, Madden already was winding down his career with the Oakland Raiders and you may not recall his coaching career. But longtime Denver Broncos fans certainly do. The Denver Post reported Friday that in 10 years as the coach of the Raiders, Madden put together a 14-6-1 record against the Broncos and won the Super Bowl in 1976. Strangely, that Super Bowl was the beginning of the end for Madden as a head coach in the NFL, and it led to something even bigger. We can’t say how many Super Bowls he might have won had Madden continued his coaching career away from Oakland. But we probably can agree that it was his broadcasting career — and his incredible ability to relate to the kind of fans who grill brats in the parking lot at Lambeau and smother burritos outside Mile High — that paved the way to Canton and the Hall of Fame. I have to confess that I was a Packers fan and scarcely aware of the Broncos in 1978 when I had my chance to photograph Madden and participate in a

Cycling safety bill rolls on Baumgardner’s 2-abreast amendment removed in committee STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

A bill aimed at improving roadway safety for cyclists continues its uphill climb through the state Legislature. Rep. Randy Baumgardner, R-Hot Sulphur Springs, added an amendment to the House version of Senate Bill 148, but a conference committee removed the amendment earlier this week while reconciling differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill. The amendment would have curtailed riders’ ability to ride two abreast on state highways, and angered cycling groups. Baumgardner said the amendment was necessary for the safety of all road users, including cyclists. Baumgardner was the only member of the

conference committee to vote against the amendment’s removal. He could not be reached Friday when the House Baumgardner voted to send S.B. 148 to a second conference committee that will more comprehensively review the legislation. “The original conference committee could only look at differences” between the House and Senate versions, Bicycle Colorado Executive Director Dan Grunig said. “The conference committee now has broader power to go beyond just the differences.” Grunig said he is hopeful the bill — introduced in January — will be passed before the Legislature adjourns in May. Although it has been a long

Wayne Ranieri, who was injured in a March 19 bicycle accident near Lake Catamount, has been home from the hospital for about two weeks and is participating in physical therapy, his friend George Danellis said Monday. “He’s getting after his physical therapy and committed to his recovery over the long-term,” Danellis said. “People have been really supportive.” Ranieri was struck by a vehicle in the accident on Harrison Trail. The vehicle’s driver was cited for careless driving causing bodily injury. Undersheriff Dave Bustos said the motorist was driving on the wrong side of the road and that Ranieri was unable to avoid the head-on collision.

A bill that would have forced slow drivers to pull over when five or more cars lined up behind them failed in an informal vote of the Colorado Senate this week. Routt County’s legislators — Rep. Randy Baumgardner, R-Hot Sulphur Springs, and Sen. Al White, R-Hayden — opposed the legislation, thinking it would have the opposite of the intended effect of increasing safety. They also said the law would have been problematic for agri-

cultural vehicles. “It’s difficult when you have ag vehicles. You can’t always maintain a highway speed under those circumstances,” White said. White said Colorado’s frequent inclement driving conditions — and numerous tourists on the state roads who are unfamiliar with such conditions — also made the bill problematic. “There is no such thing as a speed limit on hazardous roads. That’s kind of a nebulous situation,” White said. “I get just as frustrated as anyone, but the larger issue is safety. … I

think what’s unsafe about it is expecting anybody who’s unfamiliar with mountain driving conditions to drive at a speed that other people are comfortable with.” The state House of Representatives previously had passed the bill Jan. 26 in a 37-27 vote. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Michael Merrifield, D-Manitou Springs, would amend state law to require any slow-moving vehicle on a state highway with a line of five or more vehicles behind it to pull over at the first safe opportunity. A run down a ski slope has meant a long hike or a long road trip for Steamboat Springs skiers and riders since Steamboat Ski Area closed April 12. DJ Mix Master Mike and DJ Z-Trip perform today at Copper Mountain while JD Feighner at 1 p.m., Juno What at 3 p.m., and Sound Tribe Sector 9 at 5 p.m., all will help the mountain end its season Sunday. Chris Isaak plays today at Vail. O.A.R. plays on Sunday. Echo Mountain and Loveland follow suit in May, and the last of the state’s ski areas to close for the season, as usual, will be Arapahoe Basin. A-Basin hopes to push the season into June.

lation section of the Colorado Revised Statutes already forbids driving so slowly that it impedes traffic, but supporters of House Bill 1042 said the legislation would provide a standard to determine when a driver deserves a ticket. County sheriffs of Colorado supported the law. “I am not familiar with the bill, but I am familiar with the concept,” Routt County Sheriff Gary Wall said. “I think the

concept is good. I have been faced with that situation a lot, like most people have, and I think, ‘Gosh, why doesn’t that person pull over?’” Wall said the frustration of such situations leads to problems. “It really does create a safety situation because people do things they wouldn’t normally do,” he said. — To reach Brandon Gee, call 871-4210 or e-mail bgee@steamboatpilot.com

Madden has broad appeal Ross continued from 2 — about their tight end. All of them were helpful to a neophyte sports writer. I don’t mean to rip on Casper — he’d had a tough day. But it’s my brief contact with Madden that I’ll always store in my memory banks. I would be a hypocrite if I pretended to love everything about Madden’s broadcast delivery. However, I always

learned from his analysis of run blocking schemes and defensive formations. And I’ll always admire his ability to appeal to everyman — blue collar football fans in cities such as Oakland, Chilton, Wis., Pittsburgh and Buffalo — guys and gals who, thanks to John Madden, look forward every year to their Thanksgiving turduckens. — To reach Tom Ross, call 871-4205 or e-mail tross@steamboatpilot.com

80-mile stretch of I-70 closed Spring snowstorm shuts down road between Vail, Golden Kristen Wyatt

Wet heavy snow in the mountains and several accidents on Interstate 70 forced transportation officials to shut down an 80-mile stretch of the state’s main east-west highway between Vail and Golden. The American Red Cross opened a shelter in Idaho Springs to help stranded travelers, and officials were discouraging travel. One person died in a two-vehicle crash on slick roads in Weld

County, said Trooper Gilbert Mares of the Colorado State Patrol. No serious injuries were reported in the wrecks on I-70. More than a foot of snow closed other highways and canceled flights in parts of Colorado and Wyoming, snarling traffic and forcing school closures. Power lines weighed down by snow tripped system circuit breakers and knocked out electricity to 9,600 Xcel Energy customers in Evergreen and 4,600 people in Nederland, 25 miles west and 35 miles northwest of Denver, respectively, said Joe

Fuentes, a spokesman for the utility. Some of those customers were expected to be without power overnight. About 2,600 customers also lost power in Denver. As much as 3 feet snow is expected by tonight in the mountains above 6,000 feet, forecasters said. Nearly 3 feet already had fallen by Friday afternoon in Rocky Mountain National Park about 60 miles northwest of Denver, forcing officials to close its Beaver Meadows and Fall River entrances because snowplows couldn’t keep up.

Shaffer to take over as Senate president Colleen Slevin

Colorado Senate Democrats selected two new leaders Friday without casting a single ballot. They unanimously picked Majority Leader Brandon Shaffer, of Longmont, to replace Peter Groff as president and Sen. John Morse, of Colorado Springs, to succeed Shaffer as

majority leader. Realizing they didn’t have the votes, Sen. Abel Tapia and Sen. Betty Boyd backed out of the race to replace Groff and threw their support behind Shaffer, a lawyer and a former officer in the Navy. Morse also was picked without opposition. He’s a former police chief who also has worked as an accountant and paramedic and holds a Ph.D. in public

administration. His job will be mainly to control when bills get debated on the Senate floor. The session is set to end by May 6 and Groff, the first black lawmaker to serve as Senate president, will remain in his post until then. He’s leaving to take a job in the Obama administration as director of faith-based community initiatives for the U.S. Department of Education.

Sen. White wants to review changes to bill Cycling bill continued from 3 “It’s good. I think we’ll continue to work with everybody to find a compromise that doesn’t compromise anybody’s safety,” Grunig said. “I think we’ll get something done by the end of the session. … This makes some simple changes to our traffic laws that most people already do by common sense, but it may be illegal now.” S.B. 148 includes provisions that would:

■ Require motorists to give cyclists a 3-foot berth when passing them ■ Allow motorists to cross a solid centerline to pass a cyclist ■ Allow cyclists to ride on the left side of the road on oneway roads ■ Allows cyclists to ride on the left-hand side of a dedicated right-hand turn lane even if they are not turning right ■ Make it a Class 2 misdemeanor to throw objects at a cyclist

■ Make driving toward a cyclist in a dangerous manner a careless driving offense Sen. Al White, R-Hayden, previously voted in favor the bill but said he will want to review any changes that result from the conference committee. “As long as they strike a good compromise, I’m OK with it,” White said. — To reach Brandon Gee, call 871-4210 or e-mail bgee@steamboatpilot.com

COMMENTARY

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?

A loud and promised land David Brooks

THE NEW YORK TIMES

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

On my 12th visit to Israel, I finally had my baptism by traffic accident. I was sitting at a red light when a bus turning the corner honked at me to back up. When I did, I scraped the fender of the car behind me. The driver — a young, hip-looking, alt-rocker dude — came running out of the car in a fury. He ran up to the bus driver and got into a ferocious screaming match. Then he came up to me graciously Brooks and kindly. We were brothers in the war against bus drivers. Then, as we were filling out our paperwork, another bus happened by and honked. The rocker ran out into the street and got into another ferocious screaming match with this driver. Then he came back to me

all smiles and warmth. Israel is a country held together by argument. Public culture is one long cacophony of criticism. The politicians go at each other with a fury we can’t even fathom in the United States. At news conferences, Israeli journalists ridicule and abuse their national leaders. Subordinates in companies feel free to correct their superiors. People who move here from Britain or the United States talk about going through a period of adjustment as they learn to toughen up and talk back. Ethan Bronner, The New York Times’ Jerusalem bureau chief, notes that Israelis don’t observe the distinction between the public and private realms. They treat strangers as if they were their brothers-inlaw and feel perfectly comfortable giving them advice about how to live. One Israeli acquaintance recounts the time he was depositing money into his savings account, and everybody else behind him in line got into an argument about whether he should really be putting

his money somewhere else. Another friend tells about the time he called directory assistance to get a phone number for a restaurant. The operator responded, “You don’t want to eat there,” and proceeded to give him the numbers of some other restaurants she thought were better. We all can think of reasons that Israeli culture should have evolved into a reticence-free zone and that the average behavior should be different here. This is a tough, scrappy country, perpetually fighting for survival. The most emotionally intense experiences are national ones, so the public-private distinction was bound to erode. Moreover, the status system doesn’t really revolve around money. It consists of trying to prove you are savvier than everybody else — that above all, you are nobody’s patsy. As an American Jew, I was taught to go all gooey-eyed at the thought of Israel, but I have to confess, I find the place by See Brooks, page 9

Green shoots and glimmers Paul Krugman

THE NEW YORK TIMES

Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, sees “green shoots.” President Barack Obama sees “glimmers of hope.” And the stock market has been on a tear. So is it time to sound the all clear? Here are four reasons to be cautious about the economic outlook. 1. Things still are getting worse. Industrial production just hit a 10year low. Housing starts remain incredibly weak. Foreclosures, which dipped Krugman as mortgage companies waited for details of the Obama administration’s housing plans, are surging again. The most you can say is that there are scattered signs things are getting worse more slowly — that the economy isn’t plunging quite as fast as it was. And I do mean scattered: The latest edition of the

MALLARD FILLMORE

Beige Book, the Fed’s periodic survey of business conditions, reports that “five of the twelve Districts noted a moderation in the pace of decline.” Whoopee. 2. Some of the good news isn’t convincing. The biggest positive news in recent days has come from banks, which have been announcing surprisingly good earnings. But some of those earnings reports look a little ... funny. Wells Fargo, for example, announced its best quarterly earnings ever. But a bank’s reported earnings aren’t a hard number, like sales; for example, they depend a lot on the amount the bank sets aside to cover expected future losses on its loans. And some analysts expressed considerable doubt about Wells Fargo’s assumptions, as well as other accounting issues. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs announced a huge increase in profits from fourth-quarter 2008 to first-quarter 2009. But as analysts quickly noticed, Goldman changed its definition of “quarter” (in

response to a change in its legal status), so that — I kid you not — the month of December, which happened to be a bad one for the bank, disappeared from this comparison. I don’t want to go overboard here. Maybe the banks really have swung from deep losses to hefty profits in record time. But skepticism comes naturally in this age of Madoff. Oh, and for those expecting the Treasury Department’s “stress tests” to make everything clear: The White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, says that “you will see in a systematic and coordinated way the transparency of determining and showing to all involved some of the results of these stress tests.” No, I don’t know what that means, either. 3. There may be other shoes yet to drop. Even in the Great Depression, things didn’t head straight down. There was, in particular, a pause in the plunge See Krugman, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

Israel stuck in period of frustrating stasis turns exhausting, admirable, annoying, impressive and foreign. Israel’s enemies claim the country is an outpost of Western colonialism. That’s not true. Israel is, in large measure, a Middle Eastern country, and the Israeli-Arab dispute is in part an intra-Mideast conflict. This culture of disputatiousness does yield some essential fruits. First, it gives the country a special vividness. There is no bar on earth quite so vibrant as a bar filled with Israelis. Second, it explains the genuine national unity. Israel is the most diverse small country imaginable. Nonetheless, I may be interviewing a left-wing artist in Tel Aviv or a right-wing settler in Hebron, and I can be highly confident that they will

have a few things in common: an intense sense of national mission, a hunger for emotionally significant moments, and an inability to read social signals when I try to suggest that I really don’t want them to harangue me about moving here and adopting their lifestyle. Most important, this argumentative culture nurtures a sense of responsibility. The other countries in this region are more gracious, but often there is a communal unwillingness to accept responsibility for national problems. The Israelis, on the other hand, blame themselves for everything and work hard to get the most out of each person. From that wail of criticism things really do change. I come here nearly annually, and although the peace process always is the same, there

always is something unrecognizable about the national scene — whether it is the structure of the political parties, the absorption of immigrants or the new engines of economic growth. Today, Israel is stuck in a period of frustrating stasis. Iran poses an existential threat that is too big for Israel to deal with alone. Hamas and Hezbollah will frustrate peace plans, even if the Israelis magically do everything right. This conflict will go on for a generation or more. Israelis will keep up their insufferable and necessary barrage of self-assertion. And yet we still dream about peace and the day when I am standing in line at an Israeli cash register and an Israeli shopper sees a chance to butt in front of me, and — miracle of miracles — she will not try to take it.

Don’t count recoveries before they hatch Krugman continued from 8 about a year and a half in — about where we are now. But then came a series of bank failures on both sides of the Atlantic, combined with some disastrous policy moves as countries tried to defend the dying gold standard, and the world economy fell off another cliff. Can this happen again? Well, commercial real estate is coming apart at the seams, credit card losses are surging and nobody knows yet just how bad things will get in Japan or Eastern Europe. We probably won’t repeat the disaster of 1931, but it’s far from certain that the worst is over. 4. Even when it’s over, it won’t be over. The 2001 recession officially lasted only eight months, ending in November of that year. But unemployment kept increasing for another year

and a half. The same thing happened after the 1990-91 recession. And there’s every reason to believe that it will happen this time, too. Don’t be surprised if unemployment keeps increasing right through 2010. Why? “V-shaped” recoveries, in which employment comes roaring back, take place only when there’s a lot of pent-up demand. In 1982, for example, housing was crushed by high interest rates, so when the Fed eased up, home sales surged. That’s not what’s going on this time: Today, the economy is depressed, loosely speaking, because we ran up too much debt and built too many shopping malls, and nobody is in the mood for a new burst of spending. Employment eventually will recover — it always does. But it probably won’t happen fast. So now that I’ve got everyone

depressed, what’s the answer? Persistence. History shows that one of the great policy dangers, in the face of a severe economic slump, is premature optimism. FDR responded to signs of recovery by cutting the Works Progress Administration in half and increasing taxes; the Depression promptly returned in full force. Japan slackened its efforts halfway through its lost decade, ensuring another five years of stagnation. The Obama administration’s economists understand this. They say all the right things about staying the course. But there’s a real risk that all the talk about green shoots and glimmers will breed a dangerous complacency. So here’s my advice, to the public and policymakers alike: Don’t count your recoveries before they’re hatched.

Jorge De La Rosa pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings for the Rockies, allowing five hits FRIDAY’S GAME: and departing Dodgers 4 with a 3-0 lead Rockies 3 after walking two batters in the sixth. Glendon Rusch got pinch-hitter James Loney to ground into an inning-ending double play, but the defending National League West champions pulled ahead one inning later. Matt Belisle did not retire any of the three batters he faced and was charged with three of the runs. Rafael Furcal singled, Orlando Hudson walked and Manny Ramirez singled home the Dodgers’ first run — ending his five-game RBI drought. Alan Embree (0-1) came on, and Matt Kemp grounded into a force play that scored Hudson. Andre Ethier followed with a double to left-center that brought home Kemp. Russell Martin looked at a called third strike from Jason Grilli. But Loretta, making his first start of the season at first base, dropped his bat on a breaking ball by the righthander and looped it into short left field for a single that scored Ethier with the go-ahead run. Guillermo Mota (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the victory, his first in a Dodgers uniform since 2004 after stints with Florida, Cleveland, the New York Mets and Milwaukee.

The ominous storm clouds looming over the Denver Broncos for once had nothing to do with Jay Cutler. A spring snowstorm forced

NFL the team to move rookie coach Josh McDaniels’ first minicamp practice indoors Friday. And when he went inside the bubble, the 32-year-old coach gravitated to the same spot he

always has — next to the quarterbacks. Old habits are hard to break. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do, and it was productive. It was a productive

Andersen, Nuggets rise again Cyclist retires after

positive test results

‘Birdman’ plays well after missing 2 seasons on suspension Arnie Stapleton

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

DENVER

So many things have gone right for the Denver Nuggets this season. There’s the trade that brought Chauncey Billups back to Denver, the return to health of big men Nene and Kenyon Martin. The maturation of Carmelo Anthony, the development of J.R. Smith. But it’s the acquisition of Chris “Birdman” Andersen and his spectacular play after missing almost two seasons because of a drug suspension that has the Nuggets doing so well, coach George Karl suggested. The Nuggets are the second seed in the West, and they have a first-round date with Andersen’s former team, the New Orleans Hornets, beginning Sunday at the Pepsi Center.

It’s the first time Denver has started a playoff series at home since 1988. Andersen is one part of the Nuggets’ frontcourt trio of Comeback Kids, along with Nene, who returned from testicular cancer, and Martin, who’s overcome microfracture surgery to both knees. “You have a cancer survivor that has been close to an AllStar year. You have a guy that has been maligned here because of his contract and now finally gives the foundation to a team that everybody expected of him,” Karl said. “And then you have Chris Andersen, who, when I put in the game, there is a spirit to him walking up to the scorer’s table. That doesn’t happen in pro ball. “Even the haters like Chris Andersen.”

Andersen’s ban lasted almost two years after he tested positive for an undisclosed “drug of abuse.” He said he spent his time away from the game cleaning up his life and plotting his return. “I kept a positive mind through it all. I stayed optimistic. I knew I wanted to come back and to be in the position I’m in,” Andersen said. “Being on a team in second place in the Western Conference is just one of the rewards that I got through the hard work. The hard work paid off.” Karl was worried last summer when the Nuggets had to ditch defensive stud Marcus Camby to save $20 million, half of it in salary and the other half in luxury tax. But Andersen, whose oneyear deal is worth $998,398, has replaced Camby’s shot-blocking and defensive disruption while adding a healthy dollop of exuberance that has made him a fan favorite.

Olympic champion ends tainted career Tim Reynolds

Olympic champion Tyler Hamilton, once touted as the next great American cyclist and an heir to Lance Armstrong’s throne atop the sport, ended his doping-tarnished career Friday by saying he tested positive for a banned substance and would retire. Hamilton admitted taking an herbal product for two days in February to combat depression, knowing it included a steroid. “There’s nothing to fight about,” the 38-year-old Hamilton said. “I took a banned substance. I accept the consequences. You make mistakes in your life, and I accept the penalty like a man.”

Hamilton likely will receive a ban from the U.S. AntiDoping Agency that may range from eight years to life, a sentence that would have ended his racing days anyway. “He has had a cloud over his career for a while now and the sport is better off without him,” said Pat McQuaid, president of the International Cycling Union. Hamilton’s win at the 2004 Athens Games was overshadowed by a blood doping scandal. He tested positive for doping a second time later that year, served a two-year suspension and returned to racing early in 2007 — never revealing that he was fighting depression, which he said runs in his family.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.

Brian Gay’s run of five straight birdies lifted him past a revived Todd Hamilton after two rounds of the Verizon Heritage on Friday. Gay made six birdies on the front nine, including five in a row from the fourth through ninth holes to help him to a 66 and, at 9-under par, a one-stroke lead against former British Open champion Hamilton.

First-round leader Alex Cejka followed his 64 with an even-par 71 and was tied at 7-under with two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen. Janzen’s round of 70 featured an ace on the 17th hole. Gay has improved steadily from his 11 full PGA Tour seasons. His best came last year with his first career victory at the Mayakoba Golf Classic and a personal high of more than

$2.2 million in earnings. “That front nine was awesome,” Gay said. Gay’s streak began when he rolled in an 18-footer for birdie on the par-3 4th hole, then picked up steam with a 25-foot putt a hole later. His approach from a fairway bunker landed inside 5 feet for a third straight birdie. After a birdie putt inside 10 feet on the seventh, Gay closed the stretch with another sizeable putt of 20 feet to get reach 10 under.

Brazilian race car driver and “Dancing With The Stars” champ Helio Castroneves was acquitted Friday of most charges that he worked with his sister and lawyer to evade more than $2.3 million in U.S. income taxes. A federal jury acquitted Castroneves on six counts of tax evasion but was hung on one count of conspiracy. When the sentence was read, Castroneves

broke into sobs and leaned against his attorneys for support. The jury also acquitted Katiucia Castroneves, 35, who is her 33-year-old brother’s business manager, on the tax evasion counts but also hung on the conspiracy charge. Michigan motorsports attorney Alan Miller, 71, was acquitted on all three counts of tax evasion and one count of conspiracy. The deliberations took six days after a six-week trial.

McDaniels: We’re looking forward to improving every day in spring when he would name the starter. “Until it’s clear. Until we know exactly who the right guy should be,” said McDaniels, who mentored Tom Brady and Matt Cassel as New England’s offensive coordinator. “You know they’re doing everything they can every day, morning, noon and night to try to get themselves ready to go. I think they showed well for themselves today, both of them did.” McDaniels was happy that he finally could focus on football, not feuds.

The Broncos dealt away a potential distraction April 2, sending Cutler and a fifthround draft pick to the Bears for Orton, two first-round draft picks and a third-rounder, ending a six-week feud that began when Cutler decided he didn’t want to play for Mike Shanahan’s replacement. “Incredible. Awesome. It feels good. It’s exciting,” McDaniels said about discussing football issues again, instead of the Cutler rift. “This is what we’re here for. We’re looking forward to improving every day in the spring.” By holding a plethora of

picks in the upcoming draft — including the 12th and 18th spots in the first round — McDaniels said the Broncos could select another quarterback. But picking a signal caller is not a given. “You don’t want to go to training camp with two quarterbacks, certainly,” McDaniels said. “But it’s doable if that’s what the situation is. You certainly would love to have a third quarterback that could be competitive. That’s the big thing — we’re not just looking to bring players in here at positions just to fill a spot. If the guy can compete and actually have a

chance to win a role on our team, then we’re all for it.” Simms has thrown just two passes since undergoing emergency surgery to remove his spleen after a game in 2006. However, it’s hardly a concern to McDaniels. That’s why the Broncos signed him to a two-year, $6 million deal during the winter to back up Cutler. Now, he’s fighting for a starting job like just about everyone else. “He’s totally healthy and throwing the ball well,” McDaniels said. “You couldn’t really tell any carry-over from the injury Chris suffered a cou-

ple of years ago.” All signs, though, point to Orton possibly getting first crack under center. Orton is 2112 as a starter. Asked for his assessment of the quarterback situation after just one day on the field, Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey just grinned. “Right now, it’s just two good-looking guys out there throwing the ball,” said Bailey, who’s steadily improving from offseason surgery to fix a dislocated left elbow. “I know what they’ve done around the league, but I’ve never played against them, so I really don’t know much about them.”
