Hayden’s Home Rule Charter Commission has set a brisk pace. The group spent three hours sifting through discussions of town government, referendums, ordinances and more April 13. The commission is scheduled to meet again tonight. It is charged with drafting a town charter so Hayden can switch from statutory to home rule. The Hayden Town Board of Trustees and Hayden voters would have to approve the charter. “There were a few things we left and we want to come back to because we’re not quite sure,” commission member James Lewis said. “There was a little disagreement or we wanted to go into some things further, but for the most part, it was very good.” The nine-member commission won’t meet April 27 but plans to resume at the same time the following two Mondays. In these trying economic times, there is one way to give without affecting your bank account. Yampa Valley Medical Center’s employees are more efficient, and patients receive enhanced care because of this mode of giving. The gift is time, given through the daily actions of our volunteers. This week, April 19 to 25, is National Volunteer Week. It is a time to “Celebrate People in Action,” and recognize those who improve our quality of life by giving their time to others. YVMC benefits from its 210 volunteers who participate in 11 programs and a variety of events throughout the year. Like employees, our volunteers keep sight of our mission to provide excellent healthcare through safe, personalized and quality services. Working closely with healthcare professionals, our volunteers enrich the services and programs at YVMC. When patients are brought to the emergency department after an accident on the slopes, one of the first people they encounter is a volunteer from the Help at Hand program. “I say this every year, we can’t do what we do without them,” YVMC Emergency Department Director Paula Golden, R.N., said. “They make the patient experience

more positive at a time that can be stressful.” While the patient is being triaged by an ED nurse and checked in by admissions, the Help at Hand volunteer focuses on additional needs: putting away the patient’s belongings for safe keeping, providing a warm blanket and making sure they have a ride home. They also may become emotional support for a frightened patient and their family. “Help at Hand volunteers tell me what they enjoy most about their job is knowing they made a trip to the emergency room a lot less traumatic,” Volunteer Services Coordinator Mindy Fontaine said. Volunteers make a difference in patient care throughout the YVMC campus. Much like in the ED, Day Surgery volunteers provide support for patients and their families. At the Community Health Resource Center, a free medical lending library, volunteers assist patients by providing the resources to better understand a diagnosis. At the Doak Walker Care Center, “the Bingo Ladies”

run the weekly Bingo game, just one example of the many activities in which volunteers interact with residents. “Each and every program is designed to provide a meaningful experience for the volunteer while also providing a priceless benefit to the hospital,” Fontaine said. “The programs are just as individualized as our volunteers.” Inpatients are visited by two different volunteer services during their stay in the hospital: the Cookie Cart, which provides warm cookies and beverages to patients and their families, and the STAR volunteers. STAR stands for Safety Teaching using Auxiliary Resources. These volunteers sit down with patients for several minutes and explain how to become a more active participant in their health care. Both programs offer patients and their families additional support during a time they often feel more vulnerable. In addition to various programs in the hospital, volunteers also put in countless hours See Volunteer, page 11

Snowmaker earns honor Ski Corp.’s Scott Livingston receives award from Colorado group
Scott Livingston has earned the title of snowmaker of the year, after four years of nominations. Livingston received the award from Colorado Ski Country USA at its 29th Annual Snowmaking and Slope Maintenance Conference and Trade Show, which was held April 6 to 8 in Grand Junction. Livingston Livingston has worked for Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. since 1996, becoming a snowmaking controller in 1998. He said he thinks his positive demeanor pushed him into the winner’s circle this year. “Probably attitude, I would hope, attitude and sticking with it,” Livingston said. “It seems like they’re interested in people who want to stay in snowmaking as a career, and I definitely don’t have any plans to change any time soon.”

Raise your garden to new heights

ne way to make gardening easier on your body and on the plants is to build a raised bed. It can be designed in most any shape and size that appeals to you. I have two that are side by side rectangles, each 10 feet long by 4 feet deep and 2.5 feet high. These dimensions make it less strenuous on your back and leg joints to reach into the bed for planting, weeding, watering and harvesting. Make your bed any deeper than about 4 feet and you’ll have to stretch and strain to reach into the center of your garden, defeating the primary reason for building the structure. When you fill your raised bed with a mixture of well-tilled, composted soil, the plants have an easier time spreading their roots to gather the air, water and nutrients needed for vigor and healthy growth. To create a raised bed, map out the size and shape of the space you wish it to occupy in your yard. Most any materials can be used for the frame — lumber, stone, brick, cement blocks, railroad ties, etc. Beware of using creosote or treated wood (green-treated is OK) as the chemicals can leach from wood into the soil and from there into your plants. If this is the only option available to you, then you can line your raised bed with plastic sheeting to provide a barrier between the wood sides and the soil. Before filling your bed with soil, you might want to throw in a layer of gravel

Deb Babcock or similar material to allow for good drainage. And if burrowing animals are a problem, you can line the bottom and sides with hardware cloth — that bendable metal fence-like material available at the hardware store. Another amenity you might want to consider is a structure that allows you to cover the raised bed with cloth or netting as the need arises. Because of our short growing season, many of us have a tendency to try to push the season and often get caught with plants in the ground and a frost predicted. between posts gives you an archway on which you can secure sheets, burlap or other materials to keep the warmth in on a cold night. This same structure also can be used to secure netting over and around your raised bed if you have a problem with small animals (rabbits, chipmunks, birds, etc.) getting into the garden and grazing on your flowers and veggies. Fill your raised bed with welltilled soil and compost or organic material to provide good tilth or fluffiness that aids in plant growth. Let it settle for a week or so in order to reduce large air pockets, then plant your seeds or plants according to package and label directions. Water well, mulch and enjoy a relatively easy season of gardening.

Low-cost STD testing offered STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
Discounted testing for sexually transmitted diseases will be available Tuesday and Friday at Planned Parenthood. A test for gonorrhea and chlamydia will be $5, and HIV tests will be $5. The program is offered through GYT09, a national campaign by Planned Parenthood, MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation. The campaign encourages young people to be tested for STDs; GYT stands for Get Yourself Tested. “The goal of GYT09 is to generate buzz, remove the taboo and stigma about getting tested and get young people talking about STDs testing in a comfortable way,” Monica McCafferty, spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, said in an e-mail. Parenthood encourages people to make an appointment to be tested, health center assistant Marisa Gray said. HIV testing usually costs $67, and the gonorrhea/chlamydia urine test typically costs $72, she said. Results of the HIV test are available in about 10 minutes, and the other test takes a couple of days, Gray said. All results are confidential, and Planned Parenthood treats men and women. The agency encourages but does not require parental involvement for people younger than 18, Gray said. Testing is crucial for anyone who is sexually active, Gray said. “I think as far as the gonorrhea/chlamydia goes, they are definitely something people can carry without symptoms, and that’s why it really is important
Welders complain of flu-like symptoms, cause still unknown CRAIG
A total of 19 workers at the Tri-State Generation & Transmission power plant were taken to The Memorial Hospital early Saturday morning after complaining of flulike symptoms. TMH Emergency Medical Service responded to calls a little after midnight Saturday and took seven welders to the hospital, Tri-State Communications Manager Jim Van Someren said. The welders, who work for a subcontractor hired by TriState, were coughing and said they felt nauseous. A short time later, 12 other welders said they were experiencing the same symptoms and were
taken to the hospital in private vehicles, Van Someren said. None of the 19 people suffered symptoms serious enough to be admitted to TMH, and all were treated and released by noon Saturday, Van Someren said. The cause of the illnesses remains a mystery, he added. Officials attempted to recreate the welders’ work conditions and tested the space for any gases or chemicals, but all tests came back negative, Van Someren said. Tri-State hired two Denverarea industrial hygiene firms to look into the incident, he added, but they had not uncovered any leads into what caused the welders’ sickness as of Sunday night. Fire Chief Bill Johnston said he also investigated the area but could not find anything that

From 2003 to 2007, reported cases of chlamydia increased 33.1 percent, the release stated. McCafferty provided statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the CDC, at least one in four teenage girls has an STD. “It is estimated that nearly 19 million new STDs occur each year, and that by the age of 25, one in two sexually active young people will contract an STD,” she wrote.

The roulette wheel spun. The ball was dropped. Chips of every color covered red and black numbers. The dealer called out, “22 black!” More than 10 people packed around a seemingly small table let out a roar. This wasn’t Las Vegas, however. Gamblers were trying to find Lady Luck on Friday night for a good cause, a cause other than building up their own bankroll. Horizons Specialized Services hosted its biggest fundraiser of the year, Casino Night, at the Holiday Inn of Craig. Money raised through the event helps to fund a variety of
services in Moffat County, and supplements money received from state and federal sources. Services Horizons provides include language and motor skill development for children ages 3 and younger, and programs for adults who live in group homes and apartments. Horizons Director Susan Mizen estimated volunteers sold more than 50 tickets to the event, raising about $6,500. Players got the opportunity to try their hand at blackjack, Texas hold ’em, roulette and other games. “We were looking for something different, trying to find a niche. We were just dinner auctioned to death,” said Kay Borvansky, Horizons resource development coordinator. Horizons provides services to people with developmental dis-
abilities in the five Northwest Colorado counties: Moffat, Grand, Jackson, Rio Blanco and Routt. Money raised from Friday’s Casino Night stays in Moffat County, however. “We’re here to support people with developmental disabilities to live as independently as possible in the community they grew up in,” Mizen said. “Most of the adults in the program have families here, many went to high school here, and so, being part of Horizons is kind of the next step.” Clients sold tickets to the event and gambled as well. “(Casino Night) is a great opportunity for exposure,” Borvansky said. “It helps people get familiar with the people we help.”

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?
The aura of arugulance Maureen Dowd
THE NEW YORK TIMES
The first thing I wanted to do in the Bay Area was go out to Skywalker Ranch and ask George Lucas about a disturbing conversation we’d had at an Obama inaugural party in Washington. Lucas, the creator of “Star Wars,” had told me that I had gotten Dick Cheney completely wrong, that Cheney was no Darth Vader. I felt awful. Had I been too hard on Vice? Lucas explained politely Dowd as I listened contritely. Anakin Skywalker is a promising young man who is turned to the dark side by an older politician and becomes Darth Vader. “George Bush is Darth Vader,” he said. “Cheney is the emperor.” I was relieved. In “Star Wars” terms, Dick Cheney was more evil than Darth
Vader. I hadn’t been hard enough on Vice! Lucas was on his way to Europe and didn’t have time to elaborate in person. But he sent me this message confirming our conversation: “You know, Darth Vader is really a kid from the desert planet near Crawford, and the true evil of the universe is the emperor who pulls all the strings.” Sated, I went over to talk to the other celestial celebrity in San Francisco who inspires cultlike devotion for what she does with green cooking rather than blue screens: Alice Waters, who has created her own mythical empire of healthy food with her cookbooks, edible gardens in public schools and renowned Berkeley restaurant Chez Panisse. Waters has been much in the news lately as the fairy godmother of the White House organic vegetable garden, an idea she has been pushing since 1993. Instead, Bill Clinton installed a seven-seat hot tub on the South Lawn. Although he loved to eat, Bill was more a consumer of fast
food than slow food, as Waters calls her movement to persuade Americans to sup on simple, locally grown foods free of pesticides and herbicides. The 64-year-old Waters, who got her taste for revolutions in the ’60s in school at Berkeley with the anti-war and women’s movements, wears a gold peace sign on a necklace. But with her radiant skin and her mesmerizing, hesitating arias about the sensual pleasures of food, she seems more like a ’30s movie actress than a graying hippie. (I’m not surprised to find out she loves Turner Classic Movies and Hollywood’s vintage hotel, Chateau Marmont, that she named her restaurant after a character in Marcel Pagnol’s 1930s trilogy of movies, and that she thinks of her restaurant as theater.) She wasn’t invited to the opening of the White House garden, and she understands why the Obamas would want “to keep a kind of distance from me and from See Dowd, page 9

The Extremism and Radicalization Branch, Homeland Environment Threat Analysis Division of the Department of Homeland Security, issued a report last week. It’s called “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.” I had no idea there even was an ERBHETAD of the DHS working on the Goldberg RECEPCFRRR. Who among us doesn’t feel safer already? The problem with it is that it makes little effort to document or demonstrate its contention that “extremist” groups are resurgent, that they are right-wing or that they may be formed from the ranks of

“disgruntled military veterans.” Worse, it’s very sloppy about what qualifies someone as “extremist” in the first place. Basically, it’s fancy bureaucratese for: We’re guessing bad people will do bad things because the economy is bad and the president is black. But we have no real evidence. For instance, the report insists that returning “disgruntled military veterans” from Iraq and Afghanistan are recruitment fodder for extremist and terrorist groups. But, if you follow the footnotes, as John Hinderaker of the Powerline blog did, you’ll discover that, according to the FBI, only 19 Iraq and Afghanistan war vets have joined the “extremist movement” (and some of them may have lied about their service). More than half of America’s 1.4 million active-duty military personal have served in Iraq or Afghanistan (and there roughly are 23 million veterans in the United States). Any way you slice it, 19 yahoos amount
to statistical noise so faint you would need one of those UFO-hunting dishes to pick it up. My objection to the DHS report — and DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano’s thumbless grasp of why the report bothers people — isn’t that the agency is concerned with domestic terrorists. It should be, even though it rankles a bit that this administration is so squeamish to describe Islamic terrorists as “terrorists” but is promiscuous with the T-word when it comes to right-wing Americans. The evidence that al-Qaida & Co. are terrorists is widely available, but Napolitano boasts that she calls attacks such as those on 9/11 “man-caused disasters.” She says she doesn’t want to fuel “the politics of fear.” But her own department dubs nebulous and ill-defined Americans as terrorists even though DHS has “no specific information” that they’re See Goldberg, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

Waters’ ambitious vision involves Obama that whole celebrity chef” aura. Barack Obama got upset during the campaign that he was painted as a finicky elitist after he complained about the price of arugula at Whole Foods. She’s well aware of the criticism leveled at her in blogs for condescension and food snobbery. In a post Friday called “Alice in Wonderland,” National Review stirred the pot against her: “The truth is, organic food is an expensive luxury item, something bought by those who have the resources.” She says wryly: “I’m just put into that arugulance place. I own a fancy restaurant. I own an expensive restaurant. I never thought of it as fancy. People don’t know we’re supporting 85 farms and ranches
and all of that.” Since the Obamas haven’t taken her up on her offer of a “kitchen Cabinet,” she wants to do her first TV show called “The Green Kitchen.” She can do a soliloquy on the “discernment” of choosing the most ambrosial orange. But she also says that a recession is a time when people need to learn the basics — “a kind of everyday cooking, in a really tasty way. We’re really trying to take the ‘ie’ out of foodie.” She says she’s sick of hearing about diets and obesity in America and thinks neither would be so prevalent if her European-style “delicious revolution” succeeded. Waters is a visionary. She imagines a “peace garden” on the Gaza Strip that would employ people “from all sides.” She imagines a high school
where the children could run the whole cafeteria themselves, learning math, nutrition, art and food. She imagines starting gardens at Monticello and Mount Vernon that would “become the source of all food in the White House.” She imagines food being covered on the front page and the business page — not the food page, or on TV by “lesser” reporters like “the weatherman.” Her most ambitious vision involves President Obama, who didn’t want beets in his garden. “I would just like to serve him some golden beets sometime that were roasted in the oven, that were not overcooked, that were dressed with a lovely little vinaigrette, maybe even diced in a salad,” she says in her seductive way. “Squeeze ’em with a little lime. It’s fantastically nutritious.”

Goldberg continued from 8 plotting any attacks. My real objection to this report is that its source material amounts to “everybody knows.” Everybody knows the right is full of whack-jobs, hatemongers and killers, and if we don’t remain vigilant, bad things will happen. Just look at the coverage of these tea parties. To watch CNN, you’d think these were beer hall putsches, as if emulating the Boston Tea Party and demanding less government were straight out of “Mein Kampf.” I wrote a book about fascism, which tried to show that what everybody knows isn’t necessarily true. The idea that soldiers will return from war and become right-wing militants? Well, that has its roots in Fascist Italy, where veterans returned as black-shirted shock troops
of “Il Duce,” Benito Mussolini. The only problem was that they clamored for socialism — the socialism of the trenches! — and their leader had earned the title “Il Duce” as the leader of the Socialist Party. The idea that American “hate groups” are right-wing and bristling with vets got new life with JFK’s assassination at the hands of a disgruntled vet named Lee Harvey Oswald. Everybody knew right away that Oswald was an agent of “hate” — and hate was code for right-wing and racist. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren summed up the instantaneous conventional wisdom when he blamed the “climate of hatred” for Kennedy’s death. Everybody knew that the right was involved. There was just one inconvenient truth: Oswald was a communist who, according to the
Warren report, had “an extreme dislike of the rightwing” and actually had tried to murder a right-wing former Army general. Sen. John Kerry belonged to an organization of vets that considered assassinating American politicians. (Kerry denied participating in those meetings.) Barack Obama was friends with, and a colleague of, a domestic terrorist whose organization plotted to murder soldiers and their wives at a social at Fort Dix. A young Hillary Clinton sympathized with the Black Panthers, a paramilitary gang of racist murderers and cop killers. But if you’re terrified of a bunch of citizens who throw tea in the water and demand lower taxes and less government spending, well, that’s just a sign of political seriousness. Because everyone knows who the real threat to the country is.

Service helps low-income adults tackle legal issues Tamera Manzanares
SPECIAL TO THE PILOT & TODAY
An elderly woman, bombarded by credit offers, incurs overwhelming debt, and creditors threaten legal action. An older man receives a large bill for dental work he is not sure he received, while another elderly individual just needs help getting advance directives in place. Unfortunately, these individuals, and many other older adults, have little income to pursue the legal help they need. Northwest Colorado Legal Services is an important resource for low-income older adults and others contending with legal problems or questions. Tucked away in a small office in the old hospital building in Hayden, the organization is one of 15 programs operating under the nonprofit Colorado Legal Services, which provides free legal advice and representation to qualified individuals involved in civil matters. Adults ages 60 and older, unlike their younger counterparts, do not have to financially qualify for the program. This may be because many older adults already are vulnerable due to ailing health — including cognitive problems affecting judgment, social isolation and other challenges. “They normally don’t have anywhere else to turn,” said Sherri Ferree, coordinator of Northwest Colorado Legal Services. “The majority of seniors we work with are on extremely limited incomes and may be intimidated to seek assistance directly.” Ferree will discuss program services and legal issues concerning older adults Wednesday during Wellness Wednesdays in Craig.
Learn more Sherri Ferree, coordinator of Northwest Colorado Legal Services, will talk about the organization’s services and how to apply at noon Wednesday during Wellness Wednesdays at the American Legion in Craig. For more information, call 871-7676. Northwest Colorado Legal Services hosts a free Ask a Lawyer night from 6 to 8 p.m. the second Thursday in June, August, October and December at the Colorado Mountain College Library in Steamboat Springs. Ferree hosts an “application intake” night to help residents apply for the program’s legal services, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. the first Monday of every month at the Moffat County Library in Craig. For more information about Northwest Colorado Legal Services call 276-2161 or 1-800-521-6968. Information about legal issues affecting older adults and others is available at www.coloradolegalservices. org.
Ferree works with about 26 local attorneys who provide legal advice or represent low income residents of Routt and Moffat counties. She also assists clients in Jackson, Rio Blanco and Grand counties. Attorneys advise program clients at no charge and provide additional legal work or representation at a significantly reduced rate. Currently, Northwest Colorado Legal Services compensates attorneys about $60 an hour compared to typical attorney rates of $200 to $300, Ferree said. The program, which is funded by local and state sources, does not charge clients any attorney fees, though they usually are responsible for fees to file court documents. In 2006, about 14 percent of Colorado Legal Services cases involved individuals ages 60 and older, according to the organization’s annual report for that year.

Limited incomes often prevent older adults from seeking legal advice. Northwest Colorado Legal Services provides adults ages 60 and older free legal advice and additional legal services, if necessary, for civil matters. All other individuals qualify for services based on income.
Locally, Ferree receives about four calls a month concerning older adults. Often, clients’ problems or questions are fairly simple and can be handled with quick advice. Other situations may require further investigation to determine if there is a legal issue and how to proceed. Priority is given to cases involving public benefits, such as Medicaid and Medicare, housing, consumer issues and advance directives, such as living wills. Most older clients come to Ferree hoping to resolve a consumer problem or collect a debt from a family member or person that has taken advantage of them financially. Consumer issues may involve individuals who get in over their heads in debt
because they are not fully cognizant of how various forms of credit work. In other situations, older adults receive bills for services they believe were either low quality or never happened. Sometimes, all that’s needed is a kind voice and patience to help older clients understand their situation while feeling comfortable in seeking help, Ferree said. “We just need to make sure seniors know there is a place to go for assistance,” she said. In addition to holding office hours Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Ferree conducts workshops on legal issues of interest. Dr. Larry Gaul remembers running with a longtime training partner, and noticing the abnormally fast beeping of his friend’s heart rate monitor. Finally, on hour four of the run, the friend told Gaul, a cardiologist, that his heart had been racing while on runs. Gaul urged him to get checked out, and tests showed that the friend had an unusual heart-rhythm disorder. And because the condition was discovered, he was able to successfully treat the problem. Heart problems aren’t uncommon among endurance athletes in the mountains, said Gaul. The strains of intense cardiovascular activities such as running, biking and Nordic skiing at high altitude, especially at elevations above 7,000 feet, can bring out existing heart problems, he said, citing Avon’s Mike Janelle as one of
the more well-known cases. Janelle, 40, was a professional mountain biker who died unexpectedly in 2007 of heart failure. “People think that because they exercise like that, you’re not at risk. But you can’t run from genetics — the difference is that more often, you’ll live to talk about it,” Gaul said. Gaul has served as a team physician for the U.S. Nordic Team for a decade, and as an endurance athlete himself — he’s run the Leadville 100 and is a former Nordic skiing instructor — he knows the challenges that come with higher altitude. At high altitudes, the heart has to work harder because there’s less oxygen available in the air. Often, people tout the benefits of high-altitude training — the body compensates for the change by producing more oxygen-carrying red blood cells, getting more oxygen to the working muscles. However, the increased strain
also means that problems that might not show up at lower altitudes, such as a small blockage in a blood vessel, will cause problems at high altitude. “You need to have less of a blockage to show symptoms up here,” Gaul said. “Any problems will show up faster.” So, who should be concerned? “You do risk assessment,” Gaul said. “People who are told they have a heart murmur, people with high cholesterol or people with a family history (of heart problems.) I always ask, has anyone in your family died young (for health reasons?)” Your own body will usually tip you off if something is amiss. “Have you had a sudden change in your exercise performance? Is there anything you could do before that you can’t now?” Gaul asked. “A lot of people say they’ve just felt ‘off,’ and they don’t know why. But your body knows when you shouldn’t be doing something.”
Jury convicts Aspen man in trial 18-month sentence possible; harassment charge dismissed Wyatt Haupt Jr.

A jury Friday convicted an Aspen man of one misdemeanor count that stemmed from an incident in which he allegedly harassed a former lover. Frank Charles Palmer III sat as the verdict was read in Pitkin County Court. He was convicted of violation of a protection order. The Class I misdemeanor carries a penalty of as many as 18 months in jail.

The four-man, two-woman jury took nearly three hours to reach its verdict. The decision was reached shortly before 9 p.m. Palmer was acquitted of a lesser harassment count. He is to appear in court May 12 for sentencing. Palmer is free on $10,000 bond. Deputy District Attorney Richard Nedlin said after the jury trial he was pleased with the outcome. The verdict came at end of a daylong trial in which defense attorney Jeffery Wertz said the violation was a mistake not initiated by his client. He said that Palmer was at home watching a football game Sept. 29 when a friend asked to use
the telephone. The friend, identified as Matt Franzen, testified he got distracted while using the phone and mistakenly hit a speed dial button that connected him with the victim’s office line. Franzen said he realized the error and handed the phone to Palmer, who happened to be talking about the victim. At about the same time, her voice mail engaged and recorded a six-word, four-second expletivelaced message from Palmer. Palmer said he quickly hung up the phone. He admitted to leaving the message but said that he was “projecting” or acting out a conversation with the victim and that he did not intentionally violate the protection order.

The best Steamboat has to offer
A
s soon as it became official that the Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse team would make the playoffs for the first time in school history, attention instantly turned to whom, where and when the team would play. It’s going to be a tough balance for the coaches and athletic directors who make up the seeding committee and are given the task of putting out a 24-team bracket. For those who don’t know, the lacrosse playoff bracket works this way: ■ The top eight seeds are given a first-round bye. ■ Seeds nine through 24 play in the first round, with the higher seed hosting. In the second round, the brackets are reseeded, with the No. 1 seed playing the lowest remaining seed, and so on. ■ The kicker in the deal, at least for Steamboat, is that according to the Colorado High School Activities Association, conference champions are guaranteed a top-16 seed and at least a first-round home game. The Sailors, at 13-0 overall and inaugural champions of the Mountain Conference, should therefore play at home in the first round. Although this isn’t set in stone — nothing ever seems to be in playoff seeding — it would be a travesty if the Sailors weren’t given a home game. It’s pretty common knowledge that the Mountain Conference is the weakest in the state. That’s not being harsh, it’s just the truth. Teams in the conference, excluding Steamboat, are all relatively new to high school lacrosse. Most schools in the conference have maybe 500 or 600 players to choose from, while teams in Denver and surrounding areas have thousands. That said, this is the best Steamboat team in school hisSee Graham, page 20

Soroco High School junior Matt Watwood was plenty busy Saturday. He was plenty successful, too. Only a couple of errors prevented him from being the winning pitcher in the
Steamboat Springs High School baseball team’s game Saturday in Rifle against Battle Mountain. When things were left up to him while competing for Soroco a few miles down the road at a track meet at Rifle High School, he suffered no such setback. Watwood, whose baseball
team went on to win in extra innings, won the boys discus and placed third in the shot put. “I got up at 4 a.m. and got ready to go to the track meet. It started at 9 and the baseball game didn’t start until 2:30 p.m., so I said ‘Let’s see what I can get in,’” Watwood said. “In shot, I threw two feet fur-
ther than I’ve ever thrown in my life. I was five feet shorter than my best in discus, but I still won the meet.” Steamboat Springs, Hayden and Soroco high schools each fielded a team at the 18-team track meet, and all three scored high finishes. See Track, page 20

Chauncey Billups settled down his teammates, then stepped up his game. Billups scored 36 points and made a career-best eight 3pointers in leading Denver to a 113-84 rout of the New Orleans Hornets, the second-biggest
blowout in the Nuggets’ playoff history. Capitalizing on their first home-court edge in a playoff series in 21 years, the Nuggets nearly bested their previous biggest margin of victory, a 141-111 wallop of San Antonio back in 1985.
Billups sank four of his 3s in the third quarter, when the Nuggets began to turn a tight game into a laughter. At one point, they led by 34. Denver used a 21-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to build a 95-69 cushion, a run that was highlighted by Billups’ seventh and eighth 3s. Billups was 8-for-9 from beyond the arc, and the best
long-range performance of Billups’ career helped negate All-Star point guard Chris Paul’s big game. The All-Star had 21 points and 11 assists but also an abundance of angst as the Nuggets dominated the boards, set the tempo and ran away with it in the second half. The Nuggets host the Hornets for Game 2 on Wednesday.

Watwood’s performances led the way. He won the discus with a toss of 133 feet, 1 inch. It was nearly 2 feet better than his nearest competitor. His shot put distance of 45-4 was 2 feet short of event champion Greg Orosz, of Glenwood Springs. Hayden’s Holli Salazar won the shot put with a throw of 39-0.5. She also was seventh in the discus. Jake Walker also logged a top finish for Hayden, finishing second in the 100meter dash with a time of 11.66 seconds. Steamboat’s Morgan Bessette was third in the girls long jump with a lead of 15-4.5 “We had a couple girls jump well again. Morgan was really good again,” Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said. “We were missing some legs from some relays. We had a lot of kids gone for spring break, so we pushed a lot of kids to get in events maybe they haven’t tried much before. “They did a good job with that. Overall for us, it was a really good meet.” The Hayden girls 3,200meter relay team of Maddison Kopsa, Calla Manzanares, Delanie VeDepo and Krista Tomke finished third. Soroco had a trio of girls fourth-place relay teams. Lauryn Bruggink, Traci Schlegel, Ceanna Rossi and Sarajane Rossi ran in the 1,600 and the 800 relays while Lindsay Miles subbed in for Ceanna Rossi in the 800 sprint medley. Steamboat’s Brittany Long was fifth, Hayden’s Delanie VeDepo sixth, and Katherine Lynch, also from Steamboat, seventh in the 1,600 meters. Long and Lynch also teamed up to score in the 800, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively. Tomke was fifth. Alex Estes scored in three events. He was a part of Soroco’s sixth-place 1,600 relay team, fourth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump.

tory. The record indicates it and just watching the games certainly tells it. The Sailors are deep at all three levels. Offensively, the line of Andrew White, Gus Worden and Chase Grippa is tough to defend. The Sailors roll out lines of talented midfielders, with Garret Ehrick leading the way as the best and most consistent player in
the conference. Defensively, the team hasn’t been tried too much this year, but with senior Jasper Gantick anchoring the back line, the Sailors should be set. It’s the most complete team Steamboat has ever had. The bottom line is if Steamboat had played in the same conference as last year, the team would have most likely been pushing for a playoff spot. Now that the team is
undefeated — an impressive task no matter what conference a team plays in — it deserves that home game. There, the Sailors will most likely see a Denver team, maybe even one that administered beatings to a program in its infancy just years ago. And this time, we’ll all get to see just how far Steamboat has come. The guess here is they’ve come far enough to get into that second round.

An American doctor charged with manslaughter in the deaths of three patients at a rural Australian hospital was ordered Monday to stand trial. A Brisbane Magistrates Court judge ruled there was enough evidence to send Jayant Patel to trial on three counts of manslaughter and 10 other charges, including grievous bodily harm. The charges relate to Patel’s job as director of surgery between 2003 and 2005 at the state-run Bundaberg Base Hospital in Bundaberg, a sugar industry town 230 miles (370 kilometers) north of Brisbane in Queensland state. He faces life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors say Patel showed a pattern of negligence by performing surgeries he’d been banned from undertaking in the United States, misdiagnosing

unnecessarily removed part of the 76-year-old’s colon and misdiagnosed the cause of the bleeding. Prosecutors also accuse the doctor of lying on his application to the hospital in Bundaberg by neglecting to reveal he had been reprimanded by medical boards in the U.S. In 1984, Patel was fined by New York state health officials and placed on probation for three years for failing to examine patients before surgery. He later worked at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Portland, Oregon. In 1998 — after reviewing 79 complaints about Patel — Kaiser restricted his practice. The Oregon Board of Medical Examiners later cited him for “gross or repeated acts of negligence.” Patel, who remains free on bail, will be tried in Brisbane Supreme Court. A trial date was not immediately set.

patients and using sloppy surgical techniques. Patel, who was extradited from the U.S. in July, has not entered a plea or spoken publicly about the accusations. When asked if he had anything to say, Patel told the court: “No thank you, your honor.” Magistrate Brian Hine ruled there was enough evidence to send Patel to trial to face manslaughter charges in the deaths of Gerry Kemps, James Phillips and Mervyn Morris. Prosecutors said Kemps died of blood loss after Patel failed to stop the 77-year-old man’s bleeding during an operation on his esophagus. Phillips also died after undergoing surgery on his esophagus by Patel. Prosecutors say Patel was not qualified to perform such surgeries. Morris died after undergoing two operations performed by Patel to stop bleeding in his bowel; prosecutors said Patel

cism of Islam. The administration of President Barack Obama, America’s first black head of state, announced Saturday that it would boycott “with regret” the weeklong meeting in Geneva, which already is experiencing much of the bickering and political infighting that marred the 2001 conference in Durban, South Africa. The Netherlands, Germany and New Zealand announced their boycotts Sunday and today, while Australia, Canada, Israel and Italy already had said they would not attend. “I would love to be involved in a useful conference that addressed continuing issues of racism and discrimination around the globe,” Obama said in Trinidad on Sunday after attending the Summit of the Americas. But he said the language of the U.N.’s draft declaration risked a reprise of Durban, during which “folks expressed antagonism toward Israel in ways that were often times completely hypocritical and counterproductive.” “We expressed in the run-up to this conference our concerns that if you adopted all of the language from 2001, that’s not something we can sign up for,” Obama said. “Hopefully some concrete steps come out of the conference that we can partner with other countries on to actually reduce discrimination around the globe, but this wasn’t an opportunity to do it,” he said.
Some European countries still are deciding whether to attend the U.N. conference, which runs through April 24. Britain said it will send diplomats, despite concerns the meeting could become a forum for Holocaust denial or anti-Semitic attacks. At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI said the conference is needed to eliminate racial intolerance throughout the world. Asia News, a Catholic news agency that is part of the missionary arm of the Vatican, said about the pope’s comment: “The Holy See is distancing itself from the criticisms of some Western countries.” “I am shocked and deeply disappointed by the United States’ decision not to attend,” said U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay, who is hosting the conference. She conceded some countries were focusing solely on one or two issues to the detriment of the fight against intolerance but said it is essential that the issue of racism be tackled globally. The major sticking points regarding the proposed final U.N. declaration are its implied criticism of Israel and an attempt by Muslim governments to ban all criticism of Islam, Sharia law, the prophet Muhammad and other tenets of their faith. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — who repeatedly has called for the destruction of Israel and denied the Holocaust — is slated to speak on the first day.
