Steamboat Springs Middle School students soon will have access to outdoor recreation equipment to last a decade, thanks to a $10,000 grant from Impact 100. Everything Outdoor Steamboat was the top recipient of funds from Impact 100’s third grant cycle. EOS, which provides non-motorized outdoor education and recreation experiences at no charge to students, plans to fulfill a “dire need” for equipment, said Everything Outdoor Steamboat director and middle school science teacher Matt Tredway. “It’s just equipment that is necessary to make sure these kids have a good time,” Tredway said. The club will buy new harnesses and rope for rock climbing, sub-zero sleeping bags and tents for camping, and additional gear for all seasons, he said. The grant pushes the club well beyond its typical budget, the majority of which comes from the middle school’s annual tree sale. “This thing is so huge, because we’ve always been selffunded,” Tredway said. Boaters at Stagecoach and Steamboat Lake state parks will be required to submit their vessels for inspection before setting off on the water this summer. An initiative by Colorado State Parks and the Colorado Division of Wildlife will require checks for zebra and quagga mussels and other aquatic nuisance species as part of an effort to keep the invasive water life from spreading. “Once these things get into the lake, there’s no way to kill them
off, and they spread rapidly,” said Matt Schuler, a park ranger at Steamboat Lake in northern Routt County. “They’re filter feeders, so they eat everything in the lake. The water will be clear, but there’s nothing in it.” Certified inspectors will be on hand at Steamboat Lake boat ramps during weekends this summer, as well as at the Dutch Hill marina boat ramp during the week. The inspections are scheduled to start by Memorial Day weekend but could begin any time after the marina’s May 15 opening date, Schuler said. See Fishing, page 15

n February and March, the Routt County Cooperative Extension and Master Gardener program offered sell-out classes about vegetable gardening. About 100 people attended to learn about which vegetables can be successfully grown here in the Yampa Valley. Mostly those vegetables included cold season crops such as salad greens and most root vegetables that have the added benefit of easy storage into the winter months. But what about tomatoes, just about everyone’s favorite vegetable? (Scientifically, it’s really a fruit.) Because our growing season is so short and tomatoes do not flourish in the cold soil and cool temperatures that we experience from September through

However, individual gardeners in the Yampa Valley can and do grow tomatoes, usually in containers that can be moved to warm locations when temperatures drop. Many start their plants indoors or they plant seedlings with significant foliage already started in the nursery. If you plan to grow toma-

Plastic or glazed ceramic pots or wood barrels and baskets are better than clay pots since they won’t dry out as quickly. You can start your plants indoors now, if you like, and expect to transplant the seedlings or move the pot outdoors in June when the weather cooperates. See Babcock, back page

James Dickson, center left, gets a hug from Lu Etta Loeber during a celebration Friday at Rex’s American Grill & Bar. State Senate Bill 244, on its way to Gov. Bill Ritter for approval, would require insurance carriers to cover autism spectrum disorders.
A hope for financial relief Bill would require insurance carriers to cover autism for children STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
A state bill on its way to Gov. Bill Ritter’s desk could provide tens of thousands of dollars of annual financial relief to families of children with autism spectrum disorders. For Steamboat Springs resident Babette Dickson and her son James, the law would remove the pressure of how James’
speech therapy has been covered by health insurance — the family’s plan now covers as many as 20 visits a year, less than half the amount James needs, Dickson said. “In his case, we’re talking about speech and (applied behavior analysis), and that’s probably not what we need for a full year. But we’re coming from zero to $12,000, so we’re not being picky,” Dickson said. If signed, state Senate Bill 244
would require insurance carriers to recognize autism spectrum disorders and to cover assessment, diagnosis and treatment of those disorders for children as old as 19. Annual coverage requirements would be $34,000 for children as old as 8 and $12,000 for children ages 9 to 19. As defined in the bill’s text, “autism spectrum disorders” include “autism, Asperger’s See Autism, page 14

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?
Put aside logic Maureen Dowd
THE NEW YORK TIMES
THE FINAL FRONTIER
I dreamed that Spock saved our planet, The Daily Planet of journalism. Instead of swooping in to figure out the dimensionality and logarithms to rescue the world from red matter, as Spock does in J.J. Abrams’ dazzling new “Star Trek,” I imagined Spock rescuing read matter for the world. Newspapers are an “endangered species,” as John Kerry called us in a Dowd Senate hearing last week, just as the Vulcans are in the new prequel. I know Barack Spock likes newspapers. An aide told me during the campaign that Obama would get cranky if he didn’t have some time set aside
during the day to read The New York Times. And it was clear from his very first news conference, when I began covering his long-shot bid for the White House and he began referring to stories he had read in The Times, that Obama’s supple mind was nourished by news and books. You knew he would never inspire alarm as W. did, that if Condi walked too far away or his notes blew off the lectern, he’d be utterly lost. Once, during his campaign trip to Europe, Obama told me that he had briefly sold subscriptions to The New York Times when he was at Columbia University to help pay for school but confessed he wasn’t very good at it. I said that if he won the presidency, he’d be pretty busy, but that maybe he could find time to sell a few more subscriptions. It would really help us out in the current business crunch. He gave me that wry Spock look.
In the “Star Trek” prequel, Spock’s father tells him, “You will always be a child of two worlds,” urging him not to keep such a tight vise on his emotions. And Spandexy Old Spock, known as Spock Prime, tells his younger self: “Put aside logic. Do what feels right.” Obama is also a control freak who learned to temper, if not purge, all emotion. But as a young man of mixed blood, he was more adept than Young Spock at learning to adjust his two sides to charm both worlds and to balance his cerebral air with his talent for evoking intense emotion. Just as President Spock pledged to make hope and government cool again, Abrams said he wanted his movie to make optimism cool again. Compare and contrast two men: former congressmen Jack Kemp, one of the architects of the Reagan Revolution, who recently passed away at the age of 73; and Arlen Specter, the Pennsylvania senator who switched parties to stay alive politically for another term. Specter is famous for believing whatever he needs to “believe” to get elected. Dour, Dickensian and Goldberg mercenary, he is regarded by observers across the aisle as a relentless partisan for the Party of Specter. Kemp, meanwhile, was a man of ideas and relentless, unflagging optimism, beloved on both sides of the aisle. For Kemp, the bigger the pile of manure, the more likely

there was a Christmas pony somewhere. With Specter, spreading manure is always its own reward. Kemp’s death should be cause for deep reflection about what the Republican Party is about. Specter’s defection is much less significant. Yes, we can appreciate that a rat is telling us something important when it flees a sinking ship, but we don’t have to admire the rat. Few dispute that the USS GOP is listing badly. But admitting it doesn’t mean one should take advice from those who helped scuttle her. For many liberals, in and out of the party, Specter’s decision was greeted as proof that the GOP had become too right-wing, too obsessed with social issues. Sen. Olympia Snowe, of Maine, proclaimed in response to Specter’s self-defenestration, “It was when we began to emphasize social issues to the detriment of some of our basic
tenets as a party that we encountered an electoral backlash.” Snowe implores Republicans to get back to basics and concentrate on such things as fighting government spending. Such analysis is gospel in many quarters, though it doesn’t make much sense. For instance, George W. Bush’s problems were caused by Iraq, Hurricane Katrina and the economy, not social issues. And Specter was always pro-choice and otherwise socially liberal, yet he routinely won the support of the party. The recent anti-Specter backlash was because of his vote for President Obama’s stimulus package. And Snowe herself was also one of just three GOP senators, all “moderates,” who voted for the federal economic stimulus. If they want to get back to basics, maybe they could have started by thwarting a See Goldberg, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

Papers unsure how to live long, prosper
Kemp believed in greatness of America Goldberg continued from 8 Godzillan pork bill that’s large enough to be seen from space, that will spend billions of dollars long after the Obama administration says the economy will recover. Moreover, this argument assumes the existence of a creature that Kate O’Beirne of the National Review Institute calls the “Jackalope of American politics”: the socially liberal fiscal conservative. These critters are allegedly America’s real silent majority, except they are exceedingly rare. Most people who are socially liberal are economically liberal, as well. Embracing what Barry Goldwater called “me-too” Republicanism, agreeing to liberal principles while being just a bit more frugal about living up to them, might win over a few of these exotic creatures, but it will lose tens of millions of committed conservatives. Given a
choice between an authentic Democratic Party and an unenthusiastic knockoff, why vote for the pale imitation? The real answer for the GOP isn’t to narrow the differences between the parties but to heighten them. Conservatism’s greatest achievements have arisen from giving Americans a “choice, not an echo,” as Goldwater famously put it. In 1974, during the bleak post-Watergate period, Ronald Reagan raised “a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors.” In 1978, as the U.S. floundered under President Carter, Kemp flew the flag of massive tax reform. Inspired by Kemp, the Reagan campaign in 1980 proposed an audacious 30 percent cut in taxes. And herein lies the real opportunity in Specter’s defection. It’s likely the Democrats will now have the 60 votes to run the Senate. Hence, Obama’s legislative failures will, by definition, be fail-

ures to win over members of his own party. Republican “intransigence” and “partisanship” will be rhetorical in that Republicans have no formal means of stopping Obama, only the power of their arguments. That is the environment conservatives thrive in. Yes, the Republican Party needs some new ideas, new solutions to our problems. But conservatives do not need new convictions. The GOP can choose to be the party of Kemp or of Specter, the choice or the echo. The spirit of Kemp stands for principle over power. The specter of Specter glorifies solely the principle of power. Kemp was far from perfect, but after his short time in government, he’ll be remembered not only for doing great things, but also for believing in the greatness of America. Arlen Specter, even if he spends 40 more years in government, will be remembered for nothing at all.

end journalism is dying,” and when that happens, and no one is manning the cop shops and zoning boards, America will enter “a halcyon era for state and local political corruption.” He said he thought the horse could be lured back into the barn. “I work in television now,” he said, “and no American, for the first 30 years of television, paid anything for their rabbit ears. Limbaugh and other pitiless Borg aliens firing phasers from all sides, Obama has certainly invoked Spock’s Vulcan philosophy of “Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.” And he even recruited some impulsive Rahmulen muscle for his Utopia. Many other corporations are being coddled by the president. But, as Robert Gibbs correctly pointed out the other day, a government beam-up for newspapers is not logical. One of the things Young Spock has to learn in the movie is the difference between what is morally praiseworthy and
what is morally obligatory. Newspapers do a praiseworthy job of trying to keep the dark side at bay, by shining sun on it. But society may not consider us obligatory, as we’re finding out. Kerry’s hearing tried to determine, in a metaphor that was whipped to death, whether there was any way to shut the barn door now that the inkstained horse has gotten out into the virtual pasture (making readers pay for content now that they’ve gotten used to getting it free online). David Simon, the creator of “The Wire,” who worked for 13 years as a Baltimore Sun reporter, testified that “high-

Haven happenings highlight community
Tamera Manzanares
SPECIAL TO THE PILOT & TODAY
The new expansion of The Haven Assisted Living Center in Hayden has two foundations: One is concrete, the other is community. Completed last fall, the facility’s community focus has been building steam. Hayden Wellness Days, offered every Wednesday, provide residents 50 and older lunch and a variety of Aging Well activities including guest speakers and wellness and foot checks. This week, staff at The Haven and Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, which operates Haven facilities, is adding community programs focused on outdoor landscaping and gardening projects and a caregiver support group. “We hope these projects and future programs at The Haven Community Center provide new opportunities for older adults and local residents of all ages to come together for wellness support, education and social connections,” said Donna Hackley, coordinator of the VNA’s Aging Well program.
Digging in Hayden area residents will have the chance to help bring to life the outdoor community area at The Haven Community Center on Tuesday during a volunteer landscape day. In honor of Global Youth Services day, Hayden Middle School students, along with mentors from AmeriCorps and Partners in Routt County will alternate between jobs cleaning up at the Hayden Cemetery and planting
shrubs and plants outside the Community Center. Employees with Windemere Landscape & Garden will coordinate seeding, sod and digging work among the students and community volunteers. Master Gardeners with the Routt County Extension Office also will be on hand to help with the effort. With the community’s help, the courtyard area soon will be transformed into a serene setting where Haven residents and community members can enjoy the peace of the outdoors, exercise and activities such as gardening. The outdoor space includes a large garden plot for Hayden residents to grow their own vegetables, herbs, flowers and other plants. It’s an ideal opportunity for residents who may not have the yard space to garden, as well as for green thumb experts to share skills and tips. “The whole idea, with gas and food transportation costs high, is to keep things local,” said Anne Daugherty, a member of the Hayden Garden Club, which is organizing the effort. “We really want to draw the community together.” Daugherty is asking anyone interested in planting a garden within the community plot to visit The Haven courtyard tomorrow between 4 and 6 p.m. Daughtery will be on hand to answer questions and help residents choose their garden space. In addition to having fresh flowers and vegetables, the process of sharing skills, information and gardening time, as well as opportunities to trade and even sell goods, is a valuable and healthy experience, particularly within a tough economic climate,
Daughtery said. “We’re really trying to get as many people involved as we can because it’s a community thing,” she said.
Peer support Only caregivers truly understand the challenges of caring for a disabled adult child or an older family member with dementia or chronic conditions. Sharing these challenges with a network of others in similar situations is among the most important ways caregivers can help themselves through an overwhelmingly difficult job. About 44 million adults in the U.S. provide unpaid assistance and support to older people and adults with disabilities, according to a 2004 survey conducted by the AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving. Research shows that most of these caregivers are not prepared for the demands of this role and, as a result, are at heightened risk for mental and physical health problems such as depression, heart disease and other chronic conditions. Caregivers face a difficult dichotomy: Their own ill health can compromise their ability to care for a loved one, yet they rarely have the time or energy to tend to their own health needs. Haven staff and the VNA’s
Aging Well program want to help reduce caregivers’ stress and start them on the path toward better health with a support group of their peers. The first meeting is Saturday at The Haven Community Center. “We want to fill a need that’s not being met and provide support for people doing this very important job,” said Haven director Karen Burley, who will help lead the group. In addition to encouragement, helpful resources and tips, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the adult day services program at The Haven. The program, housed in the Community Center expansion of the facility, will provide caregivers respite from caregiving responsibilities so they can work, volunteer, run errands, go to appointments, exercise or just enjoy time alone or with friends. The adult day program will operate daily, providing disabled or older adults meals, wellness checks and activities. Burley hopes the support group fuels interest in the adult day program among caregivers in addition to providing an outlet to express their frustrations and successes. Caregivers throughout Routt and Moffat counties are invited to attend the group, which will be co-led by Regina Grinolds, a case manager for Northwest Options for Longterm Care. Grinolds formerly led a support group in Craig for family members and caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. She is glad to have another option for participants of that group, which disbanded in 2007.

Volunteer Landscape Day Volunteers are invited to join Hayden Middle School students and Master Gardeners to help landscape outdoor community space at The Haven Assisted Living and Community Center tomorrow. Projects, including seeding, sod work and some planting, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers should take gloves and gardening tools if available. For more information, call 871-7676.
Community garden The Hayden Garden Club is organizing a community garden outside The Haven Assisted Living and Community Center. A club member will be at the site from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the project with residents interested in having their own plot. For more information, call Anne Daugherty, 276-2167.
Caregiver support group A new support group for individuals caring for older adults or adults with disabilities will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the adult day services space at The Haven Community Center. The group will provide peer support and resources for those facing the many challenges of caregiving. For more information, call Karen Burley at 875-1888.
“Who knows better than peers who are going through the same situation,” she said. This article includes information from the Family Caregiver Alliance Web site, www.caregiver.org. Tamera Manzanares writes for the Aging Well program and can be reached at tmanzanares@nwcovna.org or 871-7606. Aging Well, a division of Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, is a community-based program of healthy aging for adults ages 50 and older. gratitude and appreciation, a tradition we began with last year’s report. Within the Healthcare Foundation’s section, we acknowledge all of our donors who provide essential financial support. Through their generosity, YVMC is able to purchase the latest equipment to meet the needs of our community. You can pick up a copy of the report at YVMC, the Healthcare Foundation or the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association. It also is available on our Web site, www.yvmc.org. You can download and view or print your own copy. Speaking of our Web site, this is another excellent source of upto-date information about our services, programs and events at YVMC. Our Web site was redesigned in late 2007 to be more user-friendly. If you think you need to leave the valley to have a procedure or see a specialist, please start your search by seeing what is available here. You might just find you can “shop locally” and save yourself the trip. Yampa Valley Medical Center is committed to serving the needs of its growing communities. As our community grows, so must our services. In fact, we are often told by our neighbors and friends that they are surprised to learn about the extent of healthcare available at YVMC. If you are one of those locals who takes pride in possessing a deep knowledge of the Yampa Valley’s vast amenities, we encourage you to learn a little more about what your community hospital has to offer. Help us spread the word that YVMC is one of the region’s finest assets.

If the organizers of the Sombrero Ranch Great American Horse Drive and Maybell Heritage Day need a slogan for next year’s event, they could borrow from Tom Reilly’s description of his experience. “Good people, great times,

great adventure,” said Reilly, as he rested with his horse during Sunday’s drive. “I’m going to do this as long as I can.” Reilly, of Highlands Ranch, drove Tuesday to Sombrero Ranch to help wrangle the horses. He said he spent four days “gathering horses, eating and hanging out with about 20 friends.” He said he read about the drive
in Western Horseman Magazine and singed up for it in 2006. The horse drive has been a long-standing tradition, but the activities in Maybell are starting to grow into their own tradition. “We advertised regionally this year,” Heritage Day organizer Lisa Balstad said. “I think it’s safe to say there were more people here than last year.”

Disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.” Costs such as early intervention, occupational therapy, speech therapy and behavioral therapies such as applied behavior analysis would be covered under the annual amounts. “I will not have to deal with the maximum number of visits per year; I will have to deal with the maximum amount of money that health insurance will cover,” Dickson said. State Senate Bill 244 passed the Colorado General Assembly on Tuesday; a date for the measure to land on Ritter’s desk has not been decided. Lu Etta Loeber, executive director of the Yampa Valley Autism Program, said state autism advocates expect Gov. Ritter to sign the bill into law. The Autism Society of America estimates the average lifetime cost of caring for a child
with autism from $3.5 million to $5 million. For the past 10 years, Dickson said her son’s therapy costs from $10,000 to $15,000 annually. That number falls somewhere in the middle of how much a family might spend, she said. “This is a low cost because James’ needs, they’re high, but they’re not as high as some very severe kids all across the country,” Dickson said. With the support of the Yampa Valley Autism Program and Horizons Specialized Services, Dickson has managed to meet those costs and stay afloat financially — that does not apply to all families, she said. “The only way I could survive is because we have the Yampa Valley Autism Program helping and covering the costs,” Dickson said. “When you can find the roads, it makes the financial burden bearable, but that’s because I’m trained to be savvy and very creative. … It’s not that way for many families.”
Yampa Valley Autism Program provides scholarships for children’s therapy camps, offers need-based assistance for therapies and provides up to 10 hours of respite care each month for families. The group held a party Friday afternoon at Rex’s American Grill & Bar celebrating the potential passing of state Senate Bill 244 and the efforts of parents such as Dickson, who sent e-mails supporting the bill to every lawmaker who touched it at every step of the process. “I would follow what they were asking us to do. I would make sure I would e-mail all the members of the commission and tell them why they need to support it,” Dickson said. “That’s why it succeeded, that’s why it passed; it was amazing the pressure that was mounting in Denver to have this bill pass.” — To reach Margaret Hair, call 871-4204 or e-mail mhair@steamboatpilot.com

Boat checks at Stagecoach will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting as early as this Friday, said Kathleen Fischer, senior park ranger at Stagecoach. Both parks are considered low-risk and are mussel-free. Inspectors might ask boaters when and where they were last in a lake, Schuler said. If those answers hint at the boat being mussel-free, inspectors will do a sight check for the animals and run a hand along the boat’s hull to see if it’s gritty with mussel JOHN F. Green home builders are optimistic that the thousands of energy-efficient “net-zero” houses being built across Colorado could push the designs into the mainstream and make them affordable. “It just takes a little more planning. We should just not build any more crappy homes,” said Norbert Klelbl, the master developer of Geos, which is expected to start construction on a 250-home neighborhood in Arvada this summer. Net-zero homes are not dependent on natural-gas or coal-powered electricity, and
all the energy used is generated through solar and wind technologies. At the former Lowry bombing range in Aurora, the Australian development firm Lend Lease is proposing 3,800 houses on 503 acres at a cost of $2 billion. It would be a netzero energy, carbon and waste project. Krista Sprenger, project manager for the Aurora project, told The Denver Post in Sunday’s editions that the cost for building such projects could go down over time. “When more and more people start building and living this way, the cost of this type of building will really go down, and
our hope is that this becomes standard practice rather than something that is unique and different,” Sprenger said. Another project in Fort Collins would make the city’s downtown one of the nation’s first net-zero districts. The project has received $13 million in federal and state grants. Other net-zero communities are planned in Salida and east of Carbondale along the Roaring Fork River. Deb Kleinman, executive director of Colorado’s chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, said the state is seeing an increase like never before in the number of energy-efficient homes being constructed.

The labor contract between Safeway and its workers expired Saturday night without a new labor agreement and workers were planning to strike as soon as Monday. The grocery chain remains “committed to negotiating new agreements which recognize the realities of the current economy and the highly competitive retail food market in Colorado,” said Safeway spokeswoman Kristine Staaf. United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 in Colorado represents about 17,000 workers at Safeway, King Soopers and Albertsons. The union said the three chains have offered similar proposals to replace the current labor contracts, which expired
Saturday, but the sides still disagree about wages and pension benefits. Staaf said Sunday’s agreement means the labor agreements that expired Saturday will be extended on a day-today basis until May 30 while negotiations continue. She says that either side can agree to terminate their temporary agreement with a 24-hour written notice. King Soopers workers also extended their contract until May 30 while they continue negotiations. Union spokeswoman Laura Chapin said contract negotiations also are continuing at Albertsons, although a deadline for a labor agreement has not been set.

Lombardi a class act
N
obody would have blamed Soroco High School senior Tatum Lombardi if she had stayed home during Friday and Saturday’s regional track meet in Grand Junction. Nobody would have faulted her for simply sitting in the bleachers and keeping to herself. Everyone, however, should commend Lombardi for the way she has persevered through the past six months. The senior was a stalwart in the Rams track program. She’d been there for three years, is a member of the school recordbreaking 1,600-meter relay team and is a pivotal part of all Soroco athletics. But this track season has been especially trying on Lombardi. At last season’s state track meet, Lombardi had to pull out of the last relay. The pain in her feet, ankles and knees was unbearable. So at end of volleyball season, Lombardi had surgery on both her feet. She had implants inserted just below the ankle bone to help keep her from walking on the inside of her feet. The surgery was done so Lombardi could compete in this year’s track season. She had high hopes. With Lombardi in the lineup, the Rams had a legitimate shot to finish in the top three at state in several relays. But something was wrong. The implant in her right foot started to come out. “The pain was ridiculous,” she said. Not a huge problem at first. She went in for a second surgery, had a bone removed and a bigger implant inserted. Track season was still a possibility. But again, that implant started to force its way out. Finally the implant was removed — and with it Lombardi’s chance to compete in track. Predictably, it’s been hard on the teen. See Graham, page 24

Still grumpy about how Game 3 finished, and groggy from the practically sleepless night that followed, the Dallas Mavericks got together Sunday to watch some film.
Guess what clip coach Rick Carlisle didn’t show? Hint: It’s one the league isn’t proud of, either. As much as they don’t want to see the play, it’s one they’ll all remember: Antoine Wright bumping Carmelo Anthony in an obvious attempt to draw a foul, then bumping him again,
yet failing to get rung up either time at the end of a game during which the officials had no trouble blowing their whistles. Anthony wound up swishing a 3-pointer with 1 second left, taking the Denver Nuggets from two points down to one point ahead and a commanding 3-0 lead in this second-
round series. “We’re not going to get that last play back, so just by watching it doesn’t do us any good,” Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki said. Nowitzki and his teammates admittedly had trouble letting go of what happened. The difSee Nuggets, page 24

Johan Franzen, Jiri Hudler, Darren Helm and Henrik Zetterberg scored, helping the Detroit Red Wings beat the Anaheim Ducks, 4-1, on Sunday. The defending Stanley Cup champions’ dominating performance gave them a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series. Game 6 will be Tuesday night at Anaheim. Ryan Whitney scored late in the second period, and Jonas Hiller stopped 34 shots, giving the Ducks a chance until Helm made it 3-1 with 3:08 left. Zetterberg added an empty-net goal in the final minute. Detroit’s Chris Osgood finished with 16 saves. Franzen had his seventh goal of the postseason and scored for the 20th time in 25 playoff games since the start of last year’s title run. He has six goals in six games.

The defending champions aren’t giving up their crown easily. Glen Davis made a 21-foot jumper as time expired to help the Boston Celtics hold off a furious rally and defeat the Orlando Magic, 95-94, on Sunday night to even their Eastern Conference semifinal at two games apiece. Davis took the pass on the wing from Paul Pierce, swished the jumper over a charging Rashard Lewis and ran to halfcourt, where he was mobbed by teammates, leaving the Orlando home crowd silenced.
NBA PLAYOFFS Davis’ jumper followed a pair of free throws by Lewis that put the Magic ahead with 11.3 seconds to play. Davis also hit a 15foot jumper in the final minute and finished with 21 points. Dwight Howard had 23 points and 17 rebounds, and Lewis scored 22 for the Magic. Game 5 is Tuesday in Boston. The Celtics went ahead by nine points with about 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Pierce. Boston’s All-Star forward had 27 points but would battle foul trouble the rest of the way, helping Orlando trim the lead slowly. Magic coach Stan Van Gundy
had cautioned his team about feeling satisfied with its Game 3 victory, even reminding players with a message at the team’s practice facility that they were in the same position Philadelphia was in their first-round series. The 76ers went up 2-1, then lost in six games. But it was Boston that went right at Orlando from the start. The aggressive play caused Howard to pick up his second foul about halfway through the opening period, with the Celtics already taking a five-point lead. The Magic would withstand an early push by Boston and then go on a 9-2 run to end the quarter ahead 28-25 without Howard.

Stenson blows away field at Players GOLF — PGA
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA.
Henrik Stenson was famous for reasons he never imagined. Two months ago, he was best known as the Swede who stripped down to nothing but his underwear and a golf glove while playing from a water hazard at Doral. Out of curiosity, he searched the Internet and found 143 articles, more news than he ever got for his game. “I guess I got as much attention off that thing as from my results the last 10 years,” he said. His golf was all the rage Sunday at The Players Championship. With a final round that was close to perfect, Stenson was the only player to keep bogeys off his card on his way to a 6-under

66 that gave him a four-shot victory, the 10th of his career and by far his biggest. “This is obviously going to be the latest thing on the résumé,” Stenson said. Trailing by five shots on the treacherous TPC Sawgrass, he took advantage of a swift and shocking collapse by Alex Cejka, never had to worry about Tiger Woods and blew away everyone else in firm, fast conditions rarely seen this side of a major. “I was thinking that if I could finish in front of Tiger, that might be good enough,” said Ian Poulter, who shot a 70 to finish second. “But I wasn’t expecting someone to go out there and shoot 66.” The sun-baked gallery was curious how Cejka would fare with a five-shot lead playing in
the final group with Woods. Four holes and a little more than an hour into the final round, the lead was gone. Cejka shot 42 on the front and wound up with a 79. Focus quickly shifted to Woods, and whether he could rally to win from five shots behind as he did at Bay Hill. But not this time. Woods missed three fairways that led to bogeys on the front nine and trailed by as many as eight shots on the back nine. “When you’re playing a golf course like this and you don’t have it, and the greens are this fast and this hard, you can shoot some pretty high numbers,” he said. Woods managed a 73 to finish eighth, his first top 10 at The Players Championship since he won in 2001, and his 16th consecutive top 10 in stroke-play events worldwide.

The Colorado Rockies resolved one of their biggest concerns by finally winning a close game. They might have something new to worry about, though. Aaron Cook pitched six solid innings, and Troy Tulowitzki homered as part of his third straight multihit game in the Rockies’ 3-2 win against the Florida Marlins on Sunday. The victory denied the Marlins’ bid for a series sweep and marked the Rockies’ first win this season in a one-run game after losing their first eight. On the down side, manager Clint Hurdle said after the game that Tulowitzki “tweaked” his

Tulowitzki’s health took some of the edge off the Rockies’ long-awaited close victory, but the win was welcomed by the struggling Rockies nonetheless.

Pau Gasol scored 30 points, and Kobe Bryant had a quiet 15 for Los Angeles. Lakers coach Phil Jackson warned his team about taking the Rockets too lightly after hearing about Yao’s injury. But the Lakers looked lethargic from the start, giving away careless turnovers and playing lax defense.

ference in being down 2-1 and 3-0 is a big part of it, but so is the fact two hours after the game ended NBA president Joel Litvin essentially said, “Oops,” acknowledging that a foul should’ve been called. “If I was the league, I wouldn’t say that,” Nowitzki said. “I don’t think it makes anybody feel better. We don’t get the last seven seconds back to kind of play it over again. More than anything, I think it made it worse.” NBA spokesman Tim Frank said Sunday that the league was still reviewing the postgame scene on the court, when Dallas’ Josh Howard and team owner Mark Cuban were among those visibly upset.
The Mavericks are in enough trouble already. No NBA team has overcome a 3-0 deficit and they’re unlikely to be the first considering they’re also 0-7 against the Nuggets this season. Denver also is the only team to win in Dallas since midFebruary and the Nuggets have done it twice. So perhaps the question going into Game 4 tonight isn’t whether Denver will be headed to the conference finals for the first time since 1985, but “When?” Although the Nuggets have seen their margin of victory dip from 14 points to 12 to one, the key, of course, is that they’re still winning. In fact, knowing that Dallas has gotten closer each game should help keep Denver play-

That’s always the toughest game to win, especially in a sweep situation. They’re going to fight really hard and do everything they can possibly do to keep their season alive.” With the non-call still a hot topic, Billups brought up a point that could get overlooked: “People fail to realize that you still have to make a tough shot. Babcock continued from 4 Be sure to harden off your seedlings before setting them out. This means set your pot outdoors for longer periods of time throughout several days up to a full day and night before leaving them outdoors permanently for the summer. And as Eileen Grover warned at the classes we held, “You’ll need to be married to your tomatoes,” meaning she moves them indoors on cool nights and back outside the next morning all summer long. Use loose, well-drained soil with lots or organic matter mixed in for best results. Tomatoes thrive on fertile soil. Check daily to see if the soil needs watering and, in midsummer, begin fertilizing. For our short growing season, tomato varieties that we’ll have the best luck with are those with fast maturities. Here are some varieties to consider (listed by hybrid name and days to maturity): Siberia: 50 days Oregon Spring Bush: 60 days German Queen: 55 to 70 days Glacier: 55 days Early Girl: 50 days
Sasha’s Altai (orange tomato): 59 days Galina’s Cherry (yellow cherry tomato): 59 days Extreme Bush (heirloom): 50 days Fourth of July (cherry): 49 days Marmande: 65 days Matt’s Wild Cherry (heirloom cherry): 55 days McGee: 55 days Sweet 100 (cherry): 55 days Tiny Tim (cherry): 45 days Ida Gold (heirloom orange): 59 days Stupice: 50 days Azoychka (yellow): 60 days Golden Bison (yellow): 59 days Orange Banana (yellow): 52 days If you’ve never had luck growing tomatoes here in Routt County, give some of these shorter maturity varieties a try or purchase plants already started. Some seed sources are listed in the box on page 4. Deb Babcock is a Master Gardener through the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension office in Routt County. Questions?
