100 years of tradition 32 seniors graduate from Hayden High School a century after 1st class Joel Reichenberger PILOT & TODAY STAFF
HAYDEN
Hayden High School’s Sunday graduation ceremony was the 100th in the school’s history. It’s safe to assume many of the traditions that were observed at this year’s festivities have been repeated for much of that century. The band played the “Pomp and Circumstance” as the seniors — 32, now graduated and on their way to join a dozen schools and 32 different futures — filed in. The salutatorian and valedictorian each gave speeches sprinkled with “thank yous” for parents and teachers, “remember whens” for classmates and tears for a major life-turning point. Guest speakers spoke about dreams and potential. Principal Troy Zabel announced that he had approved the class for graduation, and Superintendent Greg Rockhold called each member of the class forward to accept a handshake and a diploma. And with a turn of the tassel, a cloud of caps and a rain of silly string, the Class of 2009 made its way out of the Hayden High School gymnasium and into the world, joining the classes of Tigers that have preceded it. The two-hour ceremony wasn’t without its distinguishing characteristics, though, and neither was Hayden’s centennial class. See Hayden, page 14

Chronic illness requires special treatment Christine McKelvie MONDAY MEDICAL
Multiple sclerosis. Osteoporosis. Crohn’s disease. Rheumatoid arthritis. Irritable bowel syndrome. These chronic conditions may seem to have little in common. In Steamboat Springs, the unifying factor is that they all are being treated at Yampa Valley Medical Center’s Infusion/ Chemotherapy Center, in the medical office building on the hospital campus. “We provide very personalized care for a variety of illnesses and conditions,” Cancer Services Director Jan Fritz, RN, said. “Our goals are to manage illness, decrease pain and improve overall well-being for our patients.” See Medical, page 11

For the 2009 Christian Heritage School graduating seniors, a faith-based education ended with a faith-based graduation ceremony Sunday. “Without this school, none of us would know each other like we do,” valedictorian John Cutter said about the tight-knit and distinguished graduating class that also includes Nicolai Buccino, Jared Finch and Kerry Timmerman. The four boys received a combined total of $163,000 in scholarship offers,
college counselor Mary Ann Cutter said. John Brothers — a former Christian Heritage teacher who is now an associate pastor at Highlands Baptist Church in Henderson, Ky. — was invited back to deliver Sunday’s keynote address. Brothers joked that the graduates would have to sit through one last “lecture” from him. “I caught you on the last day, the last hour,” Brothers said. Brothers gave the graduates a list of metaphorical and conventional tools they will need throughout their lives, one of which was a hammer.
“You must always be builders, and never be bashers. Always build up, never tear down,” Brothers said. “This world desperately needs young Christian men of character. ... You have the drive to get the job done no matter what the cost. You are capable because Jesus, who is within you, is capable. You are not alone.” From the musical to the financial, the four graduates have a variety of post-graduate plans. Sunday’s speakers asked that the graduates’ pursuits, whatever they are, be as focused on faith See CHS, page 14

ave you ever wondered where the name of our valley and our river comes from? It’s from the Yampa plant, or perideridia gairdneri subsp borealis. The plant name is derived from the Ute Indian tribe Yamparicas, which inhabited the Colorado Yampa River Valley. This plant, which you can see in a native garden at the Yampa River Botanic Park, as well as in the wild in sagebrush and meadows, was harvested in late summer by the Indians who lived in our area. They prepared them many ways, eating the roots raw, boiled, roasted or dried and ground to make flour for porridges, bread or cake. The root, which smells like carrots, has a sweet, nutty flavor, and the flower adds a little spiciness to salads. The seeds can be used as you would caraway seeds in baking or sprinkled in a salad. Karen Vail said the Yampa Valley’s most well-known botanist, the roots were such a highly valued commodity that they were traded for goods and services among tribes. In addition to being nutritious, it has medicinal qualities prized by the tribes.
For more GARDENING WITH
Deb Babcock This plant, a member of the carrot family, has white lacy flowers that sort of look like a little umbrella. Botanists call this type of flower an umbel. This plant flowers in July through August, with seeds forming in late August to September. Yampa is monoecious, meaning it has both male and female parts on the same plant. Insects provide pollination. Be very careful, however, if you’re looking to harvest this plant for your own use. It looks very similar to the very toxic Poison hemlock and water hemlock, which both also grow here. Other native plants to the Yampa Valley that are edible include three types of violets (Viola rydbergii, V. adunca, and V.nuttallii) that are white, purple and yellow, respectively. All add a pretty and spicy enhancement to salads. Everyone’s springtime favorite, the glacier lily (Erythronium grandiflorum) is also edible.

This will be a moderate to strenuous hike at altitude. ■ Sept. 26, Saturday; 9 a.m. to noon; As our botanic buddies grasp for a last blast of color, we’ll explore the fall foliage and fall edible natives. ■ Register for all hikes at www.yampatika.org or call 871-9151.
The flowers and leaves are wonderful in a salad. And the seed pod that forms can be eaten raw or cooked like you would beans, which is what the seed tastes like. Use all parts in moderation, as it can cause digestive upset. Sweet anise (Osmorhiza occidentalis) provides a licorice flavoring when you throw its leaves into your salads. The flower heads make a nice tea, and roots can be dried and See Gardening, page 13

US 40 open house planned The public has a chance Wednesday to weigh in on a plan to widen U.S. Highway 40 to four lanes in western Steamboat Springs. A group studying alternatives for a five-mile stretch of the highway from 12th Street to the western edge of the city’s urban growth boundary, near the Steamboat Golf Club, will hold an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. The western boundary is outside city limits but within areas being considered for annexation. The study is addressing alternatives to meet transportation needs while also studying the effects of the alternatives on environmental resources. Because U.S. 40 is part of the federal highway system, the study is required under the National Environmental Protection Act. The NEPA study is sponsored by the city of Steamboat Springs, Routt County, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. Jacobs Engineering is conducting the study. “The purpose of the meeting is to get some public input on recommendations for improvements to U.S. 40,” said Craig Gaskill, public involvement

River Road and grade-separated intersections, also known as flyovers. City Councilwoman Cari Hermacinski said she is pleased with the direction the study is going. “I’m pleased with it so far because I know there’s been a lot of knowledgeable people working on it. … I had real concerns when I heard talk about a sixlane highway,” said Hermacinski, who said she thought it would be too costly and time-consuming for the city to obtain the necessary right of way for such a wide expansion. “I was really happy to see that they backed off of the six lanes because of that reason alone.”

manager for Jacobs Engineering. “Based on the public input, the City Council and county commissioners are going to meet later in June and come up with a preferred alternative.” In addition to widening the highway to four lanes, the NEPA study group also is homing in on a preferred alternative that promotes alternative modes of travel, as outlined in the city and county’s joint West Steamboat Springs Area Plan. The preferred option incorporates an access management plan developed for the same stretch of the highway and adopted by city and county officials last year. The study group also is reviewing 10-foot separated sidewalks along U.S. 40, double left-hand turn lanes at the intersection of Elk River Road and U.S. 40, and a pedestrian overpass or underpass at the same intersection. Other potential improvements include double left turn lanes at 13th Street and Lincoln Avenue and westward extensions of Steamboat Springs Transit bus lines. Gaskill said suggested improvements reflect feedback received at the NEPA study group’s first open house in January. The study group already has considered and rejected proposals including expanding U.S. 40 to six lanes, creating reversible high-occupancy toll lanes, a roundabout at U.S. 40 and Elk

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?
Cheney, master of pain Maureen Dowd NEW YORK TIMES
WASHINGTON
Dick Cheney has done many dastardly things. But presiding over policies so saturnine that they ended up putting the liberal speaker from San Francisco on the hot seat about torture may be one of his proudest achievements. Nancy Pelosi’s bad week of blithering responses about why she did nothing after being briefed on torture has given Republicans one of their happiest — and harpy-est — weeks in Dowd a long time. They relished casting Pelosi as contemptible for not fighting harder to stop their contemptible depredations against the Constitution. That’s Cheneyesque chutzpah. The stylish grandmother acted like
a stammering child caught red-handed, refusing to admit any fault and pointing the finger at a convenient scapegoat. She charged the CIA with misleading Congress, which is sort of like saying the butler did it, or accusing a generic thuggish-looking guy in a knit cap with gang tattoos to distract from your sin. Although the briefing was classified, she could have slugged it out privately with Bush officials. But she was busy trying to be the first woman to lead a major party. And very few watchdogs — in the Democratic Party or the press — were pushing back against the Bush horde in 2002 and 2003, when magazines were gushing about W. and Cheney as conquering heroes. Leon Panetta, the new CIA chief, who is Pelosi’s friend and former Democratic House colleague from California, slapped her Friday, saying that the agency briefers were truthful. And Jon Stewart ribbed that the glossily groomed speaker was
just another “Miss California USA who’s also been revealing a little too much of herself.” It’s discomfiting to think that the woman who’s making Joe Biden seem suave is second in line to the presidency. Of course, a lot of the hoo-ha around Pelosi makes it sound as if she knew stuff that no one else had any inkling of, when in fact the entire world had a pretty good idea of what was happening. The Bushies plied their dark arts in broad daylight. Besides, the question of what Pelosi knew or didn’t, or when she did or didn’t know, is irrelevant to how W. and Cheney broke the law and authorized torture. Philip Zelikow, who was State Department counselor for Condi Rice and executive director of the 9/11 Commission, testified last week before Congress that torture was “a collective failure and it was a mistake,” perhaps See Dowd, page 9

TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
If President Obama is sincere in his expressed desire to block the release of photos of alleged prisoner abuse in U.S. detention facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan, congratulations are in order. But I’m taking a waitand-see approach. Obama himself admits that he’s merely hoping to delay the release of the photos. Meanwhile, Andrew McCarthy, a fellow at the National Review Institute Goldberg and terrorism expert, makes a compelling case that Obama is trying to vote “present” once again. After all, if Obama truly wanted to block the release of these photos to protect American troops, he could issue an executive order taking them beyond the reach of the courts and the
MALLARD FILLMORE
Freedom of Information Act. Instead, Obama’s heading back to the courtroom to re-litigate the matter. This way, if the courts reaffirm that the photos must be released, Obama can say, “My hands are tied.” Even the Associated Press sees Obama’s maneuver as a way to “pass the buck to the courts.” We’ll see what happens. It seems that Obama is on something of an intellectual journey. Up until his May 13 decision to change course on the photos, it seemed fairly clear that he had a solid theory about how to sell America to the world: apologize. Admit to some of our harshest critics’ and enemies’ theories of American wrongdoing and they will love us for it, particularly if you can pin it all on George W. Bush in the process. This approach, at least rhetorically, came straight out of the antiwar left. It assumed that our foreign enemies and our critical allies and the domestic left all share a similar critique of America, which is high-
proof nonsense. The strategy hardly seems to have yielded many tangible results with our critical allies, such as France and Germany, who’ve largely scoffed at U.S. leadership, even in the age of Obama. And as for our enemies, the strategy falls apart even more. After all, the Taliban’s successes have mounted during Obama’s tenure, and there has been an uptick in Iraq violence, as well. This isn’t to say Obama’s to blame; he’s not. It’s simply that the new era of hopeful-changiness has meant nothing to our enemies. Let’s start at the beginning. Modern Jihadism has its roots in the writings of Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian radical intellectual who was sort of the Rousseau of Jihadism. Qutb’s hatred for America was nurtured during a visit to the United States, specifically over a long stay as an See Goldberg, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

nection between Osama and Saddam. More and more the timeline is raising the question of why, if the torture was to prevent terrorist attacks, it seemed to happen mainly during the period when the Bush crowd was looking for what was essentially political information to justify the invasion of Iraq. I used to agree with President Barack Obama, that it was better to keep moving and focus on our myriad problems than wallow in the darkness of the past. But now I want a full accounting. I want to know every awful act committed in the name of self-defense and patriotism. Even if it only makes one ambitious congresswoman pay more attention in some future briefing about some future secret technique that is “uniquely” designed to protect us, it will be worth it.

People can’t be won over with simple apology Goldberg continued from 8 exchange student in Greeley, Colo., in 1949-50. At that time, Greeley was a Rocky Mountain Mayberry. Clean, polite, orderly and without a single bar in the whole town, Greeley was nonetheless for Qutb a grotesque den of iniquity. What really stewed his bowels was a sock hop where teenage girls danced with boys to the libidinous strains of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” The mixing of sexes in churches was “animal-like.” The Islamism practiced by followers such as Osama bin Laden has changed little since Qutb’s execution by Egyptian authorities in 1966. Bin Laden and his gang are the world’s most powerful puritans. Iraqi Sunnis turned against al-Qaida in no
small part because the foreign fighters wanted to ban smoking and throw drop cloths over every Iraqi woman. Mohammed Atta, the leader of the 9/11 hijackers who was not squeamish about dying, or about carving up innocents with box cutters, had one desperate request before he died: Make sure no women touch my underwear after I’m dead. Or consider the Uighurs — Jihadists from the Muslim hinterlands of China — the Obama administration is planning to release into D.C.’s Virginia suburbs and put on the public dole. At Gitmo, these detainees were allowed to watch television because they were deemed nonviolent. While watching a televised soccer game, the camera showed women with exposed arms, and the Uighurs
went ballistic, picking up the TV and smashing it. In short, these people can’t be won over, at least not without apologizing for a lot more than George W. Bush. Admitting a few mistakes or releasing a few photos won’t convince them we’ve turned over a new leaf, because their hatred of America stems from a hatred of modernity itself. Meanwhile, giving the Jihadists propaganda tools to help them say “see, we were right” won’t curtail recruitment, it will fuel it. At least that’s what Obama’s most senior military advisors reportedly told him. It’s good news that President Obama is open to such arguments. It remains to be seen whether he’s actually persuaded by them.

“a disaster.” After 9/11, he recalled, “the tough, gritty world of ‘the field’ worked its way into the consciousness of the nation’s leaders. ... The cultural divide between the world of secretive, bearded operators in the field coming from their 3 a.m. meetings at safe houses, and the world of Washington policymakers in their wood-paneled suites” led the policymakers to become too deferential to CIA operatives, and miss the fact that even they disagreed about torture. Ali Soufan, the ex-FBI agent who flatly calls torture “ineffective,” helped get valuable information from Abu Zubaydah, an important al-Qaida prisoner, simply by outwitting him. Torture, he told Congress, is designed to force the subject to submit “through humiliation and
cruelty” and “see the interrogator as the master who controls his pain.” It’s a good description of the bullying approach Cheney and Rummy applied to the globe, and the Arab world. But as Soufan noted, when you try to force compliance rather than elicit cooperation, it’s prone to backfire. The more telling news last week was the suggestion about Cheney’s reverse-engineering the Iraq war. Robert Windrem, a former NBC News investigative producer, reported on The Daily Beast that in April 2003, after the invasion of Baghdad, the U.S. arrested a top officer in Saddam’s security force. Even though this man was an old-fashioned POW, someone in Vice’s orbit reportedly suggested that the interrogations were too gentle and that waterboarding might elicit information about the fantasized con-

Medical continued from 2 Joe McPherson, 52, a longtime resident of the Yampa Valley, is grateful that he is getting help for multiple sclerosis. McPherson receives a monthly intravenous infusion of Tysabri, a drug that slows the disabling progression of MS and decreases the number of relapses or symptom flare-ups. “I was a log worker when I was diagnosed about 18 months ago. I went from dancing on logs to not being able to walk down the sidewalk,” McPherson said. “I’ve been coming to the hospital for about 10 months, and this has helped me.” Benna Haughey makes the trip from Craig to YVMC twice a week for her two-hour IV treatments. Because of colon cancer surgery in 2006, she is unable to absorb sufficient liquid, magnesium or vitamin B12. “This is a very nice place, and everyone is so jolly,” she said. “I couldn’t be treated better than if I was a queen in a palace.” Haughey was especially pleased last week when the infusion care team presented her with a bouquet of bright yellow sunflowers and a humorous card to celebrate her 78th birthday. McPherson and Haughey depend on YVMC’s Infusion/ Chemotherapy Center for their health. “I would not be getting this therapy if the hospital didn’t provide it, because it is too difficult for me to travel,” said McPherson, who lives in
Oak Creek. “I tell everyone, ‘Go to Steamboat,’” Haughey said. “The nurses are just top-notch, and they keep everyone’s spirits up, which is very important, I think.” In addition to the medical care, patients appreciate the soothing atmosphere of the Infusion/Chemotherapy Center, which seems more like a living room than a clinic. Patients relax in recliners and exchange friendly conversation. “We try to keep the atmosphere upbeat,” registered nurse Tina Livingston said. “The care is serious, but our patients get to know each other, they are very comfortable, and we share good humor. It often seems like a neighborhood get-together.” “I enjoy coming here,” McPherson added. “I’ve met a lot of nice people.” If a patient is not feeling good or desires time alone, the center offers a private room with a television and music system. The number of infusion and oncology patients at YVMC’s center has grown from about 40 per month to 200, Livingston estimates. Nurses also provide injections, IV antibiotic therapy for treatment of infection and blood transfusions for chronic anemia. Medical care continues to evolve as new drugs are approved, and Fritz works closely with physicians to develop protocols for the variety of medications and treatments. IV infusions can require from 20 min-

utes to six hours to administer. A recent advancement in osteoporosis treatment may be especially good news for postmenopausal women who are taking monthly or weekly oral medications. A 20-minute IV treatment with the drug Reclast is effective for a full year. This is available to people who have had a bone density test and a diagnosis of osteoporosis. “Men can get osteoporosis also, but the condition is much more prevalent among women,” Fritz said. “Women are attuned to their bone health. They’ve seen the ads for Reclast, and we are getting requests. Another option is Boniva, available by injection every three months.” While administering intricate medical care, YVMC nurses and staff pay special attention to their patients as individuals. “Some people prefer to have treatment in the late afternoon and some want to get it done at 7:30 a.m. before they go to work,” Fritz explained. “We adjust our schedules around their needs so we can help them normalize their lives. “YVMC has been offering infusion therapy as well as chemotherapy since 1992. Our patients are so glad that they don’t have to travel to the Front Range to get their treatment. They can get it all done here.” Christine McKelvie is public relations director at Yampa Valley Medical Center. She can be reached at christine. mckelvie@yvmc.org.

Bird watching keeps minds active
This article originally was published May 26, 2008. Information has been updated for accuracy. Tamera Manzanares
SPECIAL TO THE PILOT & TODAY
Anyone who watches birds, even casually, has experienced the natural high of seeing something so beautiful or awe-inspiring that it links him or her, instantly, to nature’s marvels. For Tom Litteral, an avid bird watcher in Steamboat Springs, those moments often involve birds of prey, such as peregrine falcons, diving at speeds as many as 225 miles per hour to strike victims in midair. Just as wondrous — finding a tiny hummingbird nest weaved of lichen and spider webs, cradling eggs the size of a pinky fingernail. “It just tugs at your heart,” Litteral said. The vast range of experiences and learning opportunities involved in observing and identifying birds, added to the excitement of sharing those experiences with others and being outdoors, is attracting more and more people, particularly aging baby boomers, to the hobby of bird watching. Birds attracted the biggest following among wildlife observers, whose numbers increased by 8 percent between 2001 and 2006, according to a 2006 survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The relative simplicity of the hobby — binoculars and a bird guide are basic tools of the trade — and its low impact on the body, also may contribute to the birding boom. “One of the things about bird watching for myself is it keeps me curious, and that curiosity, I think, feeds the mind and soul.
… I think that’s very important in keeping yourself young,” Litteral said. Litteral’s inquisitiveness takes him into nearby wilderness where, as a contributor to the Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas, he works to identify nesting birds in specific areas. “What a great excuse to take binoculars, a backpack and fly rod,” he said. “It doesn’t get any better than that.” Litteral’s specialty is identifying birds by their calls. An unusual song prompts excitement and a chain of questions: What is it? What’s its gender? Is it nesting or just passing through? How long will it be here? These questions inspire many enthusiastic birders to keep lists of birds they identify in a county, state or continent (more than 750 types of birds can be seen in North America) and tune into “rare bird alerts” on the Internet. Known as bird “chasers,” some fervent birders will drop everything and travel significant distances to see a rare bird or a bird outside of its range. More than a few of these visitors showed up at Jan and Vic Serafy’s home in Old Town Steamboat Springs last year to see a female varied thrush, which showed up among many birds eager for Jan Serafy’s generous offering of bird seed. The bird, which is fairly common in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, has rarely, if ever, been documented in Colorado.

Many birds capture the interest of bird watchers in the Yampa Valley. Many older adults enjoy bird watching as a hobby.
The event brought visitors from Europe and other states (some already were in the region viewing sage grouse leks), as well as from ornithological clubs and laboratories. A casual bird watcher herself, Jan Serafy was impressed by visitors’ dedication and knowledge. “Every time they came, I learned something,” she said. “That was the nicest thing was to learn from these people.” The beauty of the Serafys’ experience, of course, is that sometimes the birds come to you. Hayden bird watcher Nancy Merrill has been known to visit the outer reaches of the Yampa Valley and other places to see birds, but last season, her attention was focused on the nest of baby owls in her tree. Fellow birders joined her at her house for a party recently to watch the young owls practice flying. “Some come right to your backyard, and you feel so special you’ve been chosen,” she said.

A committee tasked with finding a name for a new elementary school in Moffat County has whittled down a batch of suggested names to five finalists,
the committee reported Friday afternoon. The Moffat County School District is building a new middle school and restructuring its elementary schools. As part of the process, Craig Intermediate School will shift from housing fifth- and sixth-
grade students to preschool through fifth-graders, thus becoming an elementary and needing a new name. The final five name suggestions, along with a brief description of the name suggestion as See Names, page 14

You must know what you are harvesting Gardening continued from 4 grated for use in baked goods, ice cream, and tea. Note: a little goes a long way. And this plant, too, is in the same family as the poison hemlocks. As Karen warns, “If you do not smell a distinct anise odor, do not use it.” Cattail (Typha latifolia) is what Karen calls “nature’s grocery store” since each part of this plant is edible. Its roots, the
stalks, the cattails themselves, even the pollen. Finally, wild onion (Alliums spp) offer a unique flavor through their flowers and leaves. The bulb is best eaten raw because cooking tends to diminish the flavor. Another caution with wild onion is that Death camas looks a lot like onion in its early stages. Be sure to smell each leaf and look for the distinctive onion aroma. Like with anything you ingest,
you need to absolutely, positively know what it is you’re harvesting from the wild or you may be picking a lethal plant that is sure to ruin your meal and more. The graduates of Hayden High School celebrate Sunday by tossing their caps into the air at the end of the school’s 100th graduation ceremony.
VeDepo and Hoza spoke Hayden continued from 1 That, with a healthy dose of tradition, is what shone through as 32 seniors met friends and family afterward with hugs of celebration. “Greatness and enjoyment,” salutatorian Mitch VeDepo said during his speech, having forced himself to find two words to describe 18 years together. At the end of his speech, he called out to his classmates. “Take a last look around,” he said. “Remember the good times and know we are the Hayden Class of 2009.” Later, valedictorian Lissa Hoza spoke with a similar message while Ty and Gina Zabel bombarded the class with advice from peo-
ple such as Walter Mondale, John Goodman and Ronald Reagan. Much of Sunday’s celebration was tried and true, familiar to anyone who’s graduated or watched someone take that walk. It was an entirely new experience for the Class of 2009, for those 32 — another in a line of graduates that now dates back a century — it will never be forgotten. “I had a lot of mixed emotions,” Kylee Sweetser said. Sweetser was joined at the ceremony by three other generations of her family. Her 90year-old great-grandmother, Helen Dobbin, made the trip from Craig for the celebration. “Today was a memory that will stay with this class forever,” Sweetser said. “We’ll always remember.”

Ritter to sign bill vs. Piñon expansion DENVER
Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter said Saturday that he will sign a bill to prevent the Army from buying or leasing land in southeast Colorado for a military training site. Ritter told The Pueblo Chieftain the bill is a safety net for farmers and ranchers who fear an Army takeover of their land. “It may not be the last discussion we have on Piñon Canyon, but it’s important to put this safety net in place,” he said. Ritter told the newspaper Saturday that he will sign the bill as soon as the paperwork is ready. The bill bars the sale of land from the Colorado State Land Board for Army expansion. About 20 percent of the land the Army wants to use is owned by the land board. The Army has said it needs to expand its training site near La
Junta, about 140 miles southeast of Denver, to accommodate new weapons, tactics and soldiers. The Army’s plan, announced more than three Ritter years ago, immediately drew the ire of landowners and congressional representatives who have fought the expansion, saying it would hurt the area’s agriculture economy and permanently damage the land. The original plan was to increase the 238,000-acre site by about 414,000 acres. But the Army has slowly backed off, first saying last year the expansion would be scaled back to 100,000 acres. On Thursday, Army officials said no money would be budgeted next year to buy land at Piñon. Instead, the $17 million the Army had budgeted for construction at the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site, which is

used by Fort Carson soldiers, was transferred to Fort Polk, La. Despite that, Lt. Col. Martin Downie, an Army spokesman in Washington, said the Army is still interested in future expansion at Piñon. Ritter and some members of Colorado’s congressional delegation have said the Army has failed to make its case for why they need the land. In addition to the bill Ritter plans to sign, Democratic U.S. Reps. John Salazar and Betsy Markey have said they want to introduce legislation to prevent any future expansion at Piñon Canyon. Salazar said he was “ecstatic and very happy” to hear Ritter planned to sign the bill blocking the training site’s expansion.

supporting charter schools and is overhauling its curriculum standards to align them with international standards. But she said Colorado must show it’s willing to go even further — and its final bid for the money, due in October, will have to make people uncomfortable to have a chance of winning. Gov. Bill Ritter will decide Colorado’s final proposal. O’Brien said it could include lengthening the school day or requiring Saturday classes for struggling students. Or the state could pledge to use some of the money for teacher bonuses or launch more meritbased pay systems pioneered by Denver schools, she said. Jefferson County is considering the move, but O’Brien said it needs to hire consultants and reprogram computers to transform its pay system.

The Obama administration is offering $4.4 billion to a select group of states willing to push school reforms, and Colorado officials are working on a pitch to win what lawmakers call the education Powerball. It could bring another estimated $400 million to Colorado during four years, depending on how many states are chosen and how big they are. Between eight to 10 states are expected to get the additional funding. The federal government won’t say what changes it’s looking for until next month. But after the stimulus bill was passed, state lawmakers from both parties worked to pass several bills aimed at boosting Colorado’s odds of winning the money. It was one
of the few major issues on which Republicans and Democrats could agree. One measure would set up a statewide system to track the performance of teachers and principals to help close the so-called “teacher gap” where less experienced teachers tend to work in low-income schools. Another provides more options for overhauling low performing schools. Current law allows them to be turned into charter schools, but a new bill would allow the state or school districts to also intervene. The state has no money to fund these projects. They would only become reality if Colorado wins the stimulus money. Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien, who leads the effort to win the socalled “Race to the Top” money, endorsed the changes. She said Colorado has a good track record

President Barack Obama strode head-on Sunday into the stormy abortion debate and told graduates at America’s leading Roman Catholic university that both sides must stop demonizing one another. Obama acknowledged that “no matter how much we want to fudge it ... the fact is that at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcil-

able.” But he still implored the University of Notre Dame’s graduating class and all in the U.S. to stop “reducing those with differing views to caricature. Open hearts. Open minds. Fair-minded words. It’s a way of life that always has been the Notre Dame tradition.” One of the noisiest controversies of his young presidency flared after Obama, who supports abortion rights but says the procedure should be rare, was invited to speak at the school and receive an honorary degree. “I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away,” the president said. The Rev. John Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president, introduced Obama and praised the president for not being “someone who stops talking to those who disagree with him.” Jenkins said too little attention has been paid to Obama’s decision to speak at an institution that opposes his abortion policy. Ahead of Obama’s address, at least 27 people were arrested on trespassing charges. They
included Norma McCorvey, the plaintiff identified as “Roe” in the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. She now opposes abortion and joined more than 300 anti-abortion demonstrators at the school’s front gate. More than half held signs, some declaring “Shame on Notre Dame” and “Stop Abortion Now” to express their anger about Notre Dame’s invitation to Obama. Obama entered the arena to thunderous applause and a standing ovation from many in the crowd of 12,000. But as the president began his commencement address, at least three protesters interrupted it. One yelled, “Stop killing our children.” The graduates responded by chanting “Yes we can,” the slogan that became synonymous with Obama’s presidential campaign. Obama seemed unfazed, saying Americans must be able to deal with things that make them “uncomfortable.”

10-run 7th leads Pirates past Rockies

PITTSBURGH
The Colorado Rockies had a bottom of the seventh inning they’d like to forget. The Pittsburgh Pirates enjoyed it so much, they probably wish it was still going. Nate McLouth had three of his four RBIs during a 10-run seventh inning, SUNDAY’S GAME: and the Pirates came from Rockies 4 behind to take Pirates 11 their second straight from the Rockies, 11-4 on Sunday. The first 11 batters reached in the seventh for Pittsburgh, which trailed 4-1 entering the inning but scored at least 10 runs in an inning for the first time since Aug. 20, 2003. “You don’t see 10s on the board too often,” Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. “Everything just kind of broke loose.” The inning featured nine hits, two Rockies errors — three balls bounced off Colorado outfielders’ gloves — and a reliever who earned a trip to the disabled list when he happened to step on a bat while running to back up home plate. “Things were going our way that inning,” McLouth said, “and sometimes you need that to have an inning like that.” McLouth also homered for the second consecutive game, and Andy LaRoche had two hits and two RBIs for the Pirates, who have won four of their past six since snapping an eight-game skid. The Rockies’ Ubaldo Jimenez allowed only one run for the third straight start, but he could not extend his personal winning streak to three when the bullpen — and the Colorado defense — didn’t hold a three-run lead for him. “It is hard, not for me not getting the win — it was hard for the team,” said Jimenez, who allowed five hits and three walks while striking out seven in six innings. “We were looking for the win to win the series, but it didn’t work out.” Matt Daley was forced to leave the game when he sprained his left foot.

LOS ANGELES
All is well again in La-La Land. The real Los Angeles Lakers showed up, and in a Game 7, no less. With Pau Gasol dominating on both ends of the court, the Lakers emphatically silenced the doubters and the Houston Rockets, winning the decisive final game of the Western Conference semifinals, 89-70, on Sunday. Playing with emotion, Gasol scored 21 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. The
NBA PLAYOFFS Lakers looked like the conference’s top-seeded team, not the maddeningly inconsistent one that was pushed to the limit by the undermanned, smaller Rockets. Trying to reach the NBA finals for the second straight year, the Lakers host the opener of the conference finals against the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night. The Lakers have been so up and down in this series that coach Phil Jackson said before Game 5 that they had
a little bit of Jekyll and Hyde in them. That was the night the Lakers raced to a 40-point win at home, only to follow it up two nights later with a 15point loss, the second straight game they were blind-sided in Houston. There are any number of theories as to why the Lakers have had a split personality. Asked what the Lakers learned from this series, Kobe Bryant cracked: “That we’re bipolar.” Added Lamar Odom: “To make it interesting. It’s See Lakers, page 22
Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu helped dethrone the defending champion Boston Celtics and give Orlando a chance to bring a crown to the Magic Kingdom. Howard had 12 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots, and Turkoglu had 25 points with 12 assists in Game 7 on Sunday night, leading Orlando into the Eastern Conference finals, 10182. Orlando trailed for just 36 seconds and built a lead it couldn’t squander to earn the right to play LeBron James and the Cavaliers for a spot in the NBA finals. Game 1 is Wednesday in Cleveland; Orlando won the season series, 2-1. “We believe. We believe we can go all the way,” Howard said. “It’s going to get harder.” Ray Allen scored 23 points for Boston, and Paul Pierce had 16 before they were taken out of the game for a courtesy cheer with 2:30 left and the Magic up, 99-78. The other member of the new Big Three, Kevin Garnett, awaited them on the bench, where he watched the whole series in street clothes with a right knee strain. Garnett’s absence derailed the Celtics’ title defense before it got started, forcing them to fight through a seven-overtime, sevengame series against Chicago in the first round and leaving them perpetually playing from behind in the second. “We still felt like this was a team that could have gone to the championship and won it, regardless of the injuries,” Pierce said. “It felt like we ran out of gas.” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Garnett had been holding off on having surgery on the chance he could come back if the team prolonged its season.

The Denver Nuggets are rested and ready. Will they also be rusty? The Nuggets took care of Dallas in five games, wrapping up their second-round series Wednesday night, then taking a day off before spending three straight days working out and wondering. They figured the Los Angeles Lakers would beat the Houston Rockets — though they didn’t think it would take seven games. So, they’ve been preparing for Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol all along with a Plan B in their back pockets just in case the Rockets pulled off a shocker. The Nuggets, who are making their first trip to the Western Conference Finals since 1985, quickly ditched their backup plans Sunday when the Lakers jumped to an early lead against the Rockets and cruised to an 8970 victory at the Staples Center.
“Surprise. Surprise,” Chauncey Billups said. “Of course, Houston had a chance. They played a great series. But like everybody else we kind of figured L.A. would win at home.” After all, the Nuggets know just how tough the Lakers are at the Staples Center, where coach George Karl hasn’t won since taking over as Denver’s coach midway through the 2004-05 season. The Nuggets have gone 110 against L.A. the past two seasons, including a four-game sweep in the first round of last year’s playoffs, when Denver became the first 50-win team in league history to get swept in the first round. Behind Billups, however,

Hollywood, you know.” It turns out that home-court advantage and a smothering defense were all it took to jumpstart the Lakers, who made sure they didn’t choke this one away against the No. 5 seed. The Lakers dominated the paint on both ends, forcing the Rockets into turnovers and bad shots. They owned the backboards, taking a 55-33 advantage, and blocked 10 shots. They had an 8-0 lead a few minutes in and widened it to 25 points on Gasol’s jump hook shortly before halftime. After the game, Bryant patted Gasol on the shoulder and offered words of congratulations. “I was just proud of the way he played,” Bryant said. “He answered the challenge, and he played like one of the best players in the world. I was just excited for him.” Gasol kept Rockets point
guard Aaron Brooks from penetrating, as he did often in this series. The Spaniard had 12 defensive rebounds and swatted away three shots. “We all know what he can do offensively. I just felt like defensively, he had a superb game,” Bryant said. Gasol made 10 of 19 shots. He left to a nice ovation with 3:34 remaining in the game. Trevor Ariza scored 15 points while Bryant and Andrew Bynum had 14 apiece. Bryant added five assists and seven rebounds. Brooks was held to 13 points and Luis Scola to 11 for Houston. Ron Artest (seven points) and Shane Battier (three) were non-factors. “I think we learned that if we play hard every night and we’re ready to compete, starting on the defensive end, we’re going to give ourselves a chance,” Gasol said. “Hopefully we’re going to carry that into the next round and to a championship. That’s

they’re supremely confident they can get past the Lakers and into their first NBA Finals since joining the league in 1976. “Everything is different,” Carmelo Anthony said. “We played the Lakers four times this regular season. But that’s out the window. It starts Tuesday. We’re going to go out there and compete. We’re going to go out and compete and try to win the hustle game and try to be a little physical and see what happens.” Karl said he, too, has a feeling the Nuggets’ fortunes are about to change. “Over the last two years, I think we tried to play their game. We tried to outscore them,” Karl said. “They were a better offensive team than we were. I think the difference right now is we’ve tried to become more of a balanced team, a defensive team, a physical team. “It seems like those teams do have more success against the Lakers than the teams that try to outscore them.”
something we need to do consistently, no matter what, no matter where we play.” This one was practically over before the fans settled into their seats. With Houston missing its first 12 shots, Los Angeles used two Houston turnovers and a blocked shot in racing to an 8-0 lead. Gasol blocked a shot by Scola and fed Bryant for a layup. Scola’s turnover led to Ariza’s tip-in of Gasol’s miss. A turnover by Brooks set up Ariza’s 3-pointer, forcing Houston to call timeout with 9:32 to go in the quarter. Houston missed seven shots during the next 2 1/2 minutes, and didn’t get on the scoreboard until Brooks made two free throws just more than five minutes in. “Coming in here for Game 7, we knew they were going to give us their best shot, especially in the first quarter,” Battier said. “To be honest with you, we just didn’t have energy to match it. Unfortunately, after we got past the first quarter, we played them pretty straight up, but the damage had been done at that point.” During one sequence, Odom blocked a shot by Brooks, Bryant ended up with the ball and whipped a crosscourt pass to Ariza for a 3-pointer and a 13-2 lead. It wasn’t until then that the Rockets made their first basket, a layup by Chuck Hayes.

Zach Johnson successfully defended his Texas Open title, winning a sudden-death playoff with an unlikely contender. Seven months after his first victory at La Cantera Golf Club, Johnson beat James Driscoll with a 10-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole after a final-round shootout in which seven players stood within a stroke of the lead with four holes left. “I feel very lucky,” said Johnson, who followed his third-round 60 with a 70. The 2007 Masters champion earned $1,098,000 for his sixth career PGA Tour victory. Driscoll, eight strokes behind at the start of the round, shot a 62 to match Johnson at 15-under 265. Johnson vaulted to the top of the FedEx Cup standings, passing Geoff Ogilvy and Phil Mickelson — the only other two-time winners on the PGA Tour this season. Johnson also won the Sony Open in January. Paul Goydos had a onestroke lead with two holes to
MEN’S GOLF play, but he closed with two bogeys for a 69, leaving him a stroke back along with Bill Haas (65), who birdied five of six holes on Nos. 11 through 16 but missed a 6-foot putt on the par-3 17th. Australia’s Marc Leishman (68), Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobson (67) and three-time champion Justin Leonard (69) finished at 13 under. Driscoll was an afterthought at 5 under when the final round began, eight strokes behind Johnson and his group that included Goydos and Leonard. After wrapping up his 62, he had to wait more than an hour for Johnson to finish his round.

It was worth the wait, but it didn’t last long. Johnson quickly won it with a 6-iron approach to set up his winning putt on the par-4 18th. Driscoll’s birdie attempt from 27 feet rolled 2 feet wide. “You want to put the pressure on your opponent. There’s no doubt about it,” Johnson said. “It’s not like he hit a bad shot. He hit 20-plus feet. He hit a good putt. So it just kind of went my way.” Driscoll was in position for the biggest comeback in the history of the Texas Open, which dates to 1922 and is the third-oldest event on the PGA Tour. Instead, Driscoll settled for only his third top-10 finish and finish since a runnerup effort in the 2005 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
