Zenewicz called Yampa Valley School a school of choice — a place where it’s up to the students to decide whether they want to be successful. The Northwest Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services operates the three-year-old school on behalf

of Routt County’s three public school districts. Three spots each are available for Hayden and South Routt students, and nine are available for Steamboat students. times, the verbal exchange is pleasantly awkward. Or maybe it’s awkwardly pleasant. Either way, it’s good to share a meal with a stranger and attempt to get them to tell you their secrets. Just Friday I met a pleasant stranger named Lynne Garell, who is asking me to take this dining with strangers thing to a whole ’nother level. Garell and her friend Lynn Ross-Bryant have undertaken an informal movement they call Pass the Bread — Celebrating Community, 100 Dinners at a Time. Pass the Bread is not a 501(c)(3), it’s not a club, it has no religious affiliation — it’s just a small group of community members trying to bring this rapidly changing community a little closer together. Garell and Ross-Bryant want me and 99 other people in Routt County to host dinner parties for 8 to 10 guests, roughly half of whom should be complete strangers, preferably from different walks of life. That’s not all. Lynne and Lynn have the nerve to dictate that the dinner party must be held June 26. And we’re not supposed to engage in meaningless chitchat. Instead, Garell said, the idea is to cut across social divisions in Steamboat by initiating a dinner conversation. Ideally, it would be a conversation about what we like most about living in Routt County and things we can do to make the community better than it already is. “We felt it was really impor-

tant that this (conversation) happen with food,” Garell said. “In human history there has been a lot of spiritual significance attached to sharing a meal. It’s sitting down and taking the time to eat a carefully prepared meal and have thoughtful conversation.” Pass the Bread had its genesis two years ago when a couple of longtime community members, David Epstein and Carole Milligan, had a chance encounter. Epstein recalls that the encounter took place at a meeting of the Community Alliance of the Yampa Valley in the old Community Center along Soda Creek. Epstein was standing in an informal gathering and making the academic argument that the growing numbers of increasingly wealthy people moving to the Yampa Valley would inevitably change the community. Epstein is a fifthgeneration Coloradan who came here 14 years ago to work in the hay business and manage ranches. He made his point without rancor. “I’m actually kind of neutral on the subject,” Epstein said. “We were talking about See Ross, back page

U.S. Forest Service employee Neal Obray raises his hands in celebration as he successfully completes a 3-mile pack test Friday afternoon along the Yampa River Core Trail with co-workers Rick Melzer, from right, and Derek Egan. In order to keep their firefighting certification, a group of Forest Service employees trained to fight fire had to take a refresher course and complete the test, which requires walking 3 miles with a 45-pound pack in less than 46 minutes.

Preparing for fire season Local Forest Service workers gear up with refresher course STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

With about a month to go before wildland fire season is expected to kick into high gear, a collection of local forest workers, firefighters and others participated in a wildland firefighting refresher course Friday put on by the U.S. Forest Service. U.S. Forest Service Fire Management Officer Mark Cahur said the annual refresher course is a requirement for wildland firefighters to maintain their certification. But in addition to rehashing fireline rules and procedures, the refresher also provides an opportunity to talk about changed conditions. Northwest Colorado has plenty of those, Cahur said, because of the mountain pine beetle infestation that is killing trees across the Rocky Mountain West. “The big issue is, of course, the beetles and the hazards the beetles create both from a fire standpoint and a snag standpoint,” Cahur said. Snags, which are standing dead trees, become the second-leading cause of death for wildland firefighters when they fall. “Snags are a huge danger for us,” Cahur said. On the plus side, recent rains have reduced the wildfire danger for the early summer. “At this point, the spring

rains are great. We’ll take them,” Cahur said. “We’re going to be in a nice greenup phase for the next month. After that, we’ll really get into our fire season.” The National Interagency Fire Center is reporting “normal significant fire potential” in the Rocky Mountain region through July. The center’s next monthly and seasonal outlook reports are due for release Monday. The refresher course also allowed the Forest Service to provide localized instruction for firefighters who may have obtained their initial certification elsewhere or who are working in the Yampa Valley for the first time. For example, instructor Tom Edwards, an initial attack squad foreman with the Forest Service, told the class that most fires start in the Craig area when there is a Lightning Activity Level of 2. LAL levels are measured 1 to 6 and fire danger is normally greatest at the high end of the scale. Edwards also covered fire behavior prediction, weather observations and strategies and procedures for communicating with aircraft when they are assisting on a fire. The day concluded for participants Friday afternoon with a physical aptitude pack test on the Yampa River Core Trail and practice with individual fire shelters. “It’s because of these guys, nobody knows we have these

fires,” said Cahur, who said 10 to 20 minor fires were extinguished in the area last year. “They keep them small.” — To reach Brandon Gee, call 871-4210 or e-mail bgee@steamboatpilot.com

Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association. The idea for a summertime event celebrating the numerous arts and culture groups in the Yampa Valley has been in the works for years, said Kara Givnish, special events and sponsorship director for the Chamber. The Chamber decided to move forward with definite plans for summer 2009 at the beginning of the year, she said. “We thought this event — since it had already been talked about and thought out — we thought it would be a great event to add to our summer lineup,” Givnish said. A fine art walk on Yampa Street between Fifth and Seventh streets will serve as home base for the weekend, Givnish said. The Yampa River Art Stroll will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 21 and 22, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 23. Other confirmed visual arts offerings include a reception for plein air artists from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Steamboat Art Museum, and a “quick draw” plein air event at a local ranch Aug. 22. 3rd-graders donate to LIFT-UP

Soda Creek Elementary School third-graders donated $175 to LIFT-UP of Routt County on Friday. The students earned the money by creating a craft business as part of a unit on economics. The students toured local businesses and sold crafts. LIFT-UP Executive Director David Freseman said he plans to use the money to help needy residents pay utility bills. “We’re running low on utility assistance funds,” he said.

Towns could share community officer Oak Creek, Yampa may split policing job Zach Fridell

PILOT & TODAY STAFF

OAK CREEK

The towns of Yampa and Oak Creek face a shared difficulty — how to police on a budget. At the Oak Creek Town Board meeting Thursday night, town trustees said they would be willing to discuss the option of sharing a community service officer after Karen Tussey, of the Yampa Town Board, said Yampa might be interested in discussing code enforcement job sharing. The Town Board approved the community service officer position earlier this month. The officer was originally scheduled to be a part-time position to enforce ordinances in Oak Creek, but trustees said a fulltime position might draw more applicants. “We need to see what (Yampa’s) expectations and needs would be, and ideally we think if we can make it more of a full-time position, it would

make it more appealing to applicants,” Police Commissioner Chuck Wisecup said. Oak Creek Town Clerk Karen Halterman plans to arrange a meeting between the two governing bodies to discuss the option. Mayor Pro-tem Wendy Gustafson said sharing an officer to handle smaller police matters would benefit both towns. “I don’t know that either one of us has the need or resources for a dedicated full-time, all-thetime officer, so if we can combine resources and keep somebody busy, we can benefit both towns,” she said. The Routt County Sheriff’s Office has handled complaints in the town since the dissolution of the town’s police force but will not field minor complaints or code violations. Gustafson said residents have said there is a need for an officer to handle those issues. “The (issues) that most resiSee Officer, page 15

Today, North Korea; tomorrow, Iran Paul Greenberg

TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES

It may be shocking but it could scarcely have been a surprise: The crazy aunt in the world’s attic has been playing around with nuclear weapons again, this time setting off an even bigger underground explosion — possibly one big enough to wipe out a city the size of Hiroshima or Nagasaki. To which the five veto-wielding powers at the United Nations have responded much as they Greenberg did the first couple of times the North Korean regime defied the UN by setting off nukes: with oh-so-serious, oh-so-official statements. Just as before, empty words will have no discernible effect on Kim Jong Il’s regime and family business. The Kims, freres et fils, know the drill by now: The world huffs and puffs while Kim & Co.

become an ever clearer and more dangerous threat. It’s not clear how becoming a nuclear power will help North Korea’s starving people, but their welfare has never been of paramount importance to their rulers, or of any importance at all. The Kims run their gulag of a country for their own and their party’s benefit. The way the Brothers Castro run Cuba. North Korea’s own Maximum Leader may hope to blackmail the rest of the world into supplying his regime with food, power plants, and associated benefits. Why not? It’s worked before. During the Clinton administration, for example. Maybe the formerly pudgy, now ailing little dictator is after something less tangible, like respect — or at least a show of it. Or maybe the current ruling Kim doesn’t know exactly what he wants, but just likes to see others quake in fear. Which is how tyrants get their jollies. The loose coalition being organized to

deter Pyongyang — notably South Korea, Japan and the United States — may or may not be able to prevent the North Koreans from exporting their bomb to terrorist groups and regimes. An even tighter watch on North Korea’s shipping would help; so would a meaningful attempt to shut that rogue regime out of the world’s financial system. All the idle talk in the world, and there’s a surfeit of it, did not prevent the North Koreans from exporting their nuclear know-how to a terrorist regime like Syria’s not long ago. It was Israeli action — for the Israelis said not a word — which put an end to that secretive deal. Not till the rest of the world is willing to take action, not just repeat empty phrases, is North Korea likely to cease and desist from its nuclear ambitions. The failure of deterrence in one part of the world can’t be limited to just that part of the world. Iran’s regime is See Greenberg, page 9

The big inflation scare Paul Krugman

THE NEW YORK TIMES

Suddenly it seems as if everyone is talking about inflation. Stern opinion pieces warn that hyperinflation is just around the corner. And markets may be heeding these warnings: Interest rates on longterm government bonds are up, with fear of future inflation one possible reason for the interest-rate spike. But does the big inflation scare make any sense? Basically, no — with one Krugman caveat I’ll get to later. And I suspect that the scare is at least partly about politics rather than economics. First thing’s first. It’s important to realize that there’s no hint of inflationary pressures in the economy right now. Consumer prices are lower now than they

MALLARD FILLMORE

were a year ago, and wage increases have stalled in the face of high unemployment. Deflation, not inflation, is the clear and present danger. So if prices aren’t rising, why the inflation worries? Some claim that the Federal Reserve is printing lots of money, which must be inflationary, while others claim that budget deficits will eventually force the U.S. government to inflate away its debt. The first story is just wrong. The second could be right, but isn’t. Now, it’s true that the Fed has taken unprecedented actions lately. More specifically, it has been buying lots of debt from the government and from the private sector and paying for these purchases by crediting banks with extra reserves. And in ordinary times, this would be highly inflationary: Banks, flush with reserves, would increase loans, which would drive up demand, which would push up prices. But these aren’t ordinary times. Banks

aren’t lending out their extra reserves. They’re just sitting on them — in effect, they’re sending the money right back to the Fed. So the Fed isn’t really printing money after all. Still, don’t such actions have to be inflationary sooner or later? No. The Bank of Japan, faced with economic difficulties not too different from those we face today, purchased debt on a huge scale between 1997 and 2003. What happened to consumer prices? They fell. All in all, much of the current inflation discussion calls to mind what happened during the early years of the Great Depression when many influential people were warning about inflation even as prices plunged. As the British economist Ralph Hawtrey wrote, “Fantastic fears of inflation were expressed. That was to cry, Fire, Fire in Noah’s Flood.” And he went on, “It is after depression and unemploySee Krugman, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

North Korea is a danger by example watching and learning lessons from North Korea’s defiance of the United Nations, which continues to outdo its ill-fated predecessor, the old League of Nations, at doing nothing. It’s not just the UN that has adopted temporizing as a substitute for a policy. The other day, Barack Obama gave Iran a green light for its nuclear program by saying Washington will wait till the end of the year before doing anything about the growing nuclear threat from Iran — and even then this country’s response may consist only of words, not action. Meeting with the once and again Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, the American president gave Israel a red light. His administration has made no secret of its opposition to the Israelis’ act-

ing alone to forestall an Iranian Bomb, but if the Israelis are not for themselves, who will be for them? They learned long ago that, if they’re not going to defend themselves, no one else will. Having just seen how effective Washington has been at preventing North Korea from acquiring and testing nuclear weapons, why should the Israelis believe the United States will do any better at stopping Iran from acquiring its Bomb? Israel is not likely to pay Washington much attention in the face of this fast developing threat to its existence, for Iran’s fuehrer has made no secret of his wanting to wipe the Jewish state off the map. For the Israelis, self-preservation may take priority over even good relations with its powerful and maybe only ally. Especially if they suspect many

Americans might be relieved to have someone else thwart Iran’s nuclear designs, since successive American administration haven’t been able to. With the West only wringing its hands at prospect of a nuclear weapon in the mullahs’ hands, the Israelis may prefer the world’s condemnation to risking their own incineration. Whether a nuclear-tipped missile is launched directly from Iran or via intermediaries like Hezbollah or Hamas would seem of little moment to them. They just want to prevent the possibility of its being launched at all. On the theory that one Holocaust was enough. The moral of this story: North Korea isn’t just a danger in itself but by example. Even before the end of the year arrives, things could get entirely too interesting for comfort in the Middle East.

We only have fear of inflation to fear ment have subsided that inflation becomes dangerous.” Is there a risk that we’ll have inflation after the economy recovers? That’s the claim of those who look at projections that federal debt may rise to more than 100 percent of GDP and say that America will eventually have to inflate away that debt — that is, drive up prices so that the real value of the debt is reduced. Such things have happened in the past. For example, France ultimately inflated away much of the debt it incurred while fighting World War I. But more modern examples are lacking. During the past two decades, Belgium, Canada and, of course, Japan have all gone through episodes when debt exceeded 100 percent of GDP. And the United States itself

emerged from World War II with debt exceeding 120 percent of GDP. In none of these cases did governments resort to inflation to resolve their problems. So is there any reason to think that inflation is coming? Some economists have argued for moderate inflation as a deliberate policy, as a way to encourage lending and reduce private debt burdens. I’m sympathetic to these arguments and made a similar case for Japan in the 1990s. But the case for inflation never made headway with Japanese policymakers then, and there’s no sign it’s getting traction with U.S. policymakers now. All of this raises the question: If inflation isn’t a real risk, why all the claims that it is? Well, as you may have noticed, economists sometimes disagree. And big disagreements are especially likely in weird

times like the present, when many of the normal rules no longer apply. But it’s hard to escape the sense that the current inflation fear-mongering is partly political, coming largely from economists who had no problem with deficits caused by tax cuts but suddenly became fiscal scolds when the government started spending money to rescue the economy. And their goal seems to be to bully the Obama administration into abandoning those rescue efforts. Needless to say, the president should not let himself be bullied. The economy is still in deep trouble and needs continuing help. Yes, we have a long-run budget problem, and we need to start laying the groundwork for a long-run solution. But when it comes to inflation, the only thing we have to fear is inflation fear itself.

Sustainability group has local roots

Council sprouted from Green Team to expand leadership 2009 board of directors

The Yampa Valley Sustainability Council evolved out of a citizen committee known as the Green Team, established by the city of Steamboat Springs in 2005. The Green Team was comprised of city employees and citizens with a passion to learn more about sustainable and green topics, but the focus was limited to how these principles applied to Steamboat’s public buildings. As interest in sustainability grew, the limited focus of the citizen committee could not meet demands for environmental leadership the community sought. Thus, the Green Team returned to its roots of developing sustainable practices specifically geared toward city government offices and operations. The citizen aspect of the group went on to form the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council. The mission of the YVSC is to provide leadership to advance environmental, economic, and social sustainability for current and future generations through education,

programs and building collaboration among individuals, organizations, businesses and government. Since its inception, membership already has grown to about 300. Topics include green building, clean renewable energy, energy efficiency, multi-modal transportation, zero waste, land use, collaboration and room to grow as the organization and needs grow within the community. Until YVSC receives its 501(c)(3) designation, it operates under the Yampa Valley Community Foundation. In the past year, YVSC has launched three programs from the Governor’s Energy Office: ENERGY STAR for New Homes, Insulate Colorado and the Colorado Carbon Fund. ENERGY STAR for New Homes is a joint program with the city of Steamboat Springs and Mountain Energy Consultants and is geared toward educating builders, Realtors, appraisers, architects, trades, developers and public.

Mark Andersen, vice-chair Angela Ashby, chair Jeremy D. Behling, treasurer Kyleigh DeMicco Sarah Fox, secretary Greg Gunn Kim Hornsby Andrea Jehn Kennedy Liz Wahl

Insulate Colorado is a homeowner rebate program that encourages energy efficiency via improved insulation in existing homes. The Colorado Carbon Fund is a statewide program established to offset greenhouse gas emissions by funding clean renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in Colorado. Twenty percent of carbon fund monies received from this area will be reinvested in smallerscale, local projects. In addition to public monthly meetings where members discuss new projects, events and opportunities, YVSC is focused on collaboration. Last year, a “collaborative roundtable” meeting brought more than 30 groups together to encourage discussion, projects and funding opportuniSee Ashby, page 14

If you can locate the Big Dipper, then you can find the “Three Leaps of the Gazelle” nearby. Look high in the western sky around 9:30 p.m. during late May.

Three Leaps of the Gazelle Jimmy Westlake

SPECIAL TO THE PILOT & TODAY

I love star lore. The legends and stories attached to the stars carry us back centuries or even millennia and tell us not only about the stars, but also about the stargazers of old. With that in mind, I’d like to tell you about three pairs of stars that you can spot high in the western sky as darkness falls in the late spring.

CELESTIAL NEWS

Jimmy Westlake Modern star charts indicate that these stars are the toes of the Great Bear, Ursa Major, but to the Arabs of the Middle Ages, these stars were

the “Kafzah al Thiba,” or, the “Three Leaps of the Gazelle.” To locate them, we first need to find the Great Bear herself. This time of the year, Ursa Major is awkwardly positioned upside down, high overhead in the northern sky, so try this: Spread a blanket on the ground and lay down on your back with your feet pointed south. Now, as you glance back toward the north, you can see Ursa Major right side up without getting a crick in your neck. The seven bright stars of the Big Dipper should immediately jump out at you. Our asterism called the Big Dipper forms the hindquarters and tail of the Great Bear, Ursa Major. Just in front of the bowl of the Big Dipper, you can find the star Muscida marking the Bear’s nose. vice employees. Ann Keating, basic life training teacher at Steamboat Springs Middle School and a member of the Steamboat Springs Education Association, the teachers’ union, said in her 26 years in the district, she seen all sorts of things. She said it’s been “quite a while” since the staff wasn’t given raises in addition to step increases. But, Keating said, the

staff is aware of the district’s financial position as a result of the struggling economy. “There are many districts where there’s mandatory furlough time, decreased pay or frozen pay,” she said. “We understand the reality of where we are.” Keating said the bargaining team would reconvene in the fall, after the October student count, to see how much perpupil funding the state will provide the district. At that time,

she said, there is a possibility for raises. Had the staff not approved the proposal, the district’s administration would have to revisit the budget, Superintendent Shalee Cunningham said last week. Cunningham said she was pleased the vote passed, but was never very concerned it wouldn’t. State statutes require the Steamboat Springs School Board to adopt the budget by June 30.

Sustainability Summit is Sept. 25 and 26 Ashby continued from 11 ties to help increase the education and awareness among the various groups focused on sustainability initiatives. A similar meeting was held in fall 2008 to discuss possible funding mechanisms for the community. YVSC again will host the widely popular Sustainability Summit on Sept. 25 and 26.

The focus is on the new energy economy, solutions and ideas for our region. Previous events have proven the need by welcoming nearly 200 participants to the plethora of presenters, booths and workshops that this event offers. Coupled with a green building tour, the summit brings local enthusiasts and local businesses together with experts in their fields.

Future plans of YVSC include collaboration with local entities on topics such as our local trail system, zero-waste efforts, resource usage, energy savings, raising funds for solar rebate programs, joint fundraising efforts, student programs, identifying funding opportunities, education and outreach. Stay tuned for the new Web site www.yvsc.org.

pairs, are very prominent. The great Arabian astronomer named Ulugh Beg (ooloog bayg) first recorded these six stars as the “Kafzah al Thiba,” or the “Three Leaps of the Gazelle,” back in the early 1400s, not long before Columbus sailed the ocean blue. The Gazelle was imagined grazing amongst the stars that form our faint constellation of Leo Minor, the Little Lion. When the Big Lion, Leo, swished his tail across the sky, it startled the gazelle. He then made three quick jumps off to the east and left three pairs of glowing hoof prints behind. The faint mist of stars that forms our constellation of Coma Berenices represents the tuft of hair on the end of Leo’s tail. I can imagine this comical celestial drama playing out in the spring stars each time I spot the “Kafzah al Thiba.” Give it a try next time you’re out under a starry sky. Wall Street sealed the third month of its spring rally with a huge advance. The fourth month looks a little less certain. Stocks shot higher right before the closing bell Friday after fluctuating on a mix of economic data. Analysts said the surge was the work of short-sellers who had bet that stocks would fall and then had to rush to buy when those

bets turned out to be wrong. A jump in commodities prices, which came on expectations that an improving economy will lift demand for raw materials, also fed the advance. Friday’s big win gave the major market indexes their third straight monthly gain and longest winning streak since October 2007. But May was the shakiest month of the spring rally that started in early March with the first signs that the economy’s slide was slowing. When trading

resumes Monday, investors are expected to show more of their recent skepticism about how strong the recovery will be once the recession has ended. New worries are weighing on investors including climbing interest rates and a weaker dollar. Crude oil prices recently hit a six-month high above $66 a barrel, while the dollar Friday sank to its lowest level in months against the euro and British pound. Some analysts say these developments are simply the

consequence of a recovery in the economy and the financial markets, but others say the trends could threaten the economy’s health in the long term. Another more short-term obstacle is General Motors’ expected bankruptcy filing Monday. The market has been factoring in the likelihood of a GM bankruptcy for months, but investors still are unsure what the fallout might be for auto suppliers and other companies. “Technically, the market is

looking quite good,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at the brokerage house Avalon Partners. “Although, I suspect we’ll probably stay within this trading range for another couple of weeks.” The Dow Jones industrial average increased 96.53, or 1.2 percent, to 8,500.33. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 12.31, or 1.4 percent, to 919.14, while the Nasdaq composite index increased 22.54, or 1.3 percent, to 1,774.33.

Motocross to open on Monday

Mike Andrews can remember sitting at the Hayden Speedway looking across Routt Country Road 53 and thinking about the possibilities. Andrews, a motocross enthusiast, had heard about previous plans to open up a motocross track and wondered why they had failed. So Andrews decided to see what it would take. One call to Hayden Town Manager Russ Martin and Andrews knew what he had to do. “I asked him, ‘What’s it going to take to get that going again,’” Andrews said. “He explained what needed to happen about two years ago.” Now, the thoughtful dreams of Andrews are a reality. The Stokes Gulch Motocross Track officially opens Monday. It will be open from sun up to sun down, seven days a week, across from the Hayden Speedway. Membership costs $50 per rider or $110 for a family. All memberships can be purchased at the Hayden Town Hall. The facility is on seven acres and features a regular motocross track for adults and a smaller one for children. “There are jumps, turns and there are some spots that can be added to as far as obstacles,” said Andrews, a main organizer of the track. Andrews said the track is self-sustaining, meaning members will be asked to do a lot of the maintenance on the course. Now that the track is about to open, Andrews said, the next phase is figuring out a water system. “It’s the YouTube of motocross,” Andrews said. “We’ve got a place to do it, but we need people to do it to keep it running.” When people buy a membership, they’ll receive a combination to get them into the gate. No more than 10 riders can be on the track at a time,

DENVER

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers are heading back to the NBA finals after dispatching the pesky Denver Nuggets with a 119-92 victory in Game 6 on Friday night.

Bryant had 35 points and 10 assists and got plenty of scoring help from Trevor Ariza, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom as the Lakers shot 57.3 percent from the field to avoid having to play a Game 7 in the Western Conference finals back at the Staples Center. They finally will get some

much-needed rest after playing every other day for a grueling two weeks. These Lakers, who are headed to their record 30th NBA finals and are seeking their 15th title, are a more grizzled group — but also more See Nuggets, page 22

Ask Gentlemen of Aspen rugby player and Steamboat Springs resident Chris Baumann about today’s Division I Final Four, and the normally soft-spoken giant doesn’t mince words. Aspen should and will win the title, Baumann said. “Aspen is probably going to win it. I’d put money on it,” Baumann said. “We just have pretty much no weaknesses in our team. We’ve just been playing really well together. I just don’t see anybody beating us. Losing is not going to happen. I’m not even going to think about it.” Today’s game against Atlanta begins at 4 p.m. in Glendale, just outside of Denver. The winner will play the winner of the other semifinal match, which pits Las Vegas against Pearl City, Iowa. Despite being seeded 14th out of 16 teams, Aspen beat Provo, Utah, and Los Angeles to make it to Glendale this weekend. In Aspen’s previous four contests, the team has given up only three tries. That kind of defense could propel Aspen to its eighth Division I crown. “Expectations are to win a national title,” said Michael Hurley, another Steamboat resident who plays for Aspen. “Now that we’re back here, we expect that from each other and as a club.” One advantage Aspen has against Atlanta will be experience. Whereas Atlanta doesn’t have many players with national team experience, Aspen has several players who have played for the U.S. Eagles. Steamboat rugby players Hurley, Baumann, Abel Varney and Nick Nespeca should all play a key part in today’s contest. Hurley said the key to the game is to stick to Aspen’s game plan. If the Gentlemen are able to do that, Hurley said, they should find their way to the finals. See Rugby, page 23

PARIS

Out of breath and out of sorts, Venus Williams played her way right out of the French Open on Friday with her most lopsided Grand Slam loss since 2001. That the No. 3-seeded Williams would exit in the third round at Roland Garros is not quite so extraordinary, perhaps, considering she now has left this particular Grand Slam tournament at this precise stage in four of the past five years. That Williams would lose the way she did — 6-0, 6-4 — and to the player she did — 29th-seeded Agnes Szavay, of Hungary, whose résumé boasts a lone major quarterfinal appearance — was anything but ordinary. “I’m used to beating people 6-0. I’m not used to my shot not going in and losing a set 6-0,” Williams said. “So it completely was foreign ground for me.”

Pearl City is the favorite

TENNIS — FRENCH OPEN The red clay of Paris often feels that way to the older Williams sister, whose seven Grand Slam singles titles were earned at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Based on seeding and name, her departure qualifies as by far the tournament’s most significant. Hours later, Maria Sharapova appeared headed in the same direction. Like Williams, Sharapova hasn’t won the French Open, and she, too, slogged through three sets in each of her first two matches this week, then looked awful at the start Friday.

But Sharapova, surgically repaired right shoulder and all, did what Williams couldn’t: She pulled herself together and moved into the fourth round. Sharapova came back to beat 98th-ranked Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. While Sharapova found herself in yet another two-hour-plus test, No. 1 Dinara Safina and defending champion Ana Ivanovic won easily. Four-time reigning champion Rafael Nadal made things look simple against former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, beating him 6-1, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 3 Andy Murray, No. 8 Fernando Verdasco, No. 10 Nikolay Davydenko and No. 12 Fernando Gonzalez also reached the fourth round. “I dug a nice pothole for myself there. That’s kind of what I’ve been doing the last few rounds,” Sharapova said. “I don’t think she came up with great shots in order to win that first set. I honestly believe that I was making easy errors.”

$40K was donated to track Motocross continued from 21

Rugby continued from 21 “We just got to get in and play our game,” Hurley said. “Our game isn’t about starting quickly. We have to make sure we have our heads in the game from the early going. Pretty much the key is to bring our game to it.” Pearl City is probably the favorite coming in, just missing the national championship game a year ago. Las Vegas beat the other favorite, host Glendale, in the Round of Eight to advance.

and the parking lot can fit only 15 cars. Track use is on a first come, first serve basis, Andrews said. Andrews said the project was a group effort, with multiple companies donating time and labor to finally get the track together. He said in addition to the town of Hayden making the land available, he estimated more than $40,000 worth of donations from the

community were put into the project. “I was a bit surprised how big the project has become,” Andrews said. “I knew there would be a lot involved and I’ve learned a lot along the way. I’ve worked with so many people and had a ton of help. I want to thank all the people that put time and money into the place to get it finished.”

grass-influenced rock ’n’ roll band The Avett Brothers at the base of Steamboat Ski Area. The 5 p.m. concert is part of the 2009 Steamboat Springs Free Summer Concert Series. Solo pianist George Winston continues the music lineup with his set for Strings Music Festival’s Different Tempo Series at 8 p.m. Aug. 21. The Steamboat Springs Orchestra is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Strings Music Pavilion. Details for a showing by Emerald City Opera on Aug. 23 have not been determined, Givnish said. Anchoring the lineup will be a crew of performing arts showings from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 22 on the Yampa Stage, according to the tentative festival schedule. A block party hosted by the Steamboat Springs Arts Council

For more For an updated schedule of events during the inaugural Steamboat All Arts Festival, scheduled for Aug. 2023, go to www.steamboat-chamber. com. Tickets for some events are available through the Web site. Festival events from local arts organizations will be added as they are confirmed, said Kara Givnish, special events and sponsorship director for the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association. — celebrating the 100th anniversary of its home, the former train station now called the Depot Art Center — culminates the festival. The late afternoon event Aug. 23 will include a cookout, an exhibition of train memorabilia, and live entertainment, said Rachel Radetsky, events and facilities coordinator for the Arts Council. Workshops in photography, writing, visual art and other pursuits will be held through

the weekend at the base of Steamboat Ski Area, most likely near Torian Plum Plaza, Givnish said. The workshop lineup should be set by June 10, she said. Visual and performing arts schedules will grow as more groups get involved, Givnish said. Other participating organizations include Steamboat Dance Theatre, Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp, the Design District and Mainstreet Steamboat Springs. “I think the schedule is just going to evolve, especially with it being our first year. We’re already in June, so things are just going to continue to add to it,” Givnish said, noting that the Chamber is trying to work closely with local groups to make sure everyone is involved and represented. — To reach Margaret Hair, call 871-4204 or e-mail mhair@steamboatpilot.com

More Pass the Bread dinner hosts needed Ross continued from 2 how the dynamic of the community is changing and has been changing for many years. Certain areas of town are wealthier than others, and we talked about the need to get people together to share ideas.” Milligan was listening in, and when she heard Epstein posit that affluent residents of the county were changing the social fabric she chimed in: “You might be talking about me,” she told Epstein. Coincidentally, Milligan, a physician, moved here 14 years ago from the Bay Area after selling a radiology/ oncology practice. She is the medical director at Hospice of Northwest Colorado and serves on the ethics committee at Yampa Valley Medical Center. Understandably, she feels like

she’s making a contribution to the community. However, Milligan agrees that Epstein has a point. She finds that her own social circle consists of people she met within two or three years of arriving here, when all of them were looking for new friends. Affluent people like her tend to meet through activities like flying, skiing and perhaps golf, Milligan said. “Some of these activities do sort of set up a class structure,” she pointed out. Lynne and Lynn have firm commitments from 17 dinner hosts with another 23 teetering on the brink. So they are looking for another 60 dinner hosts well in advance of June 26. They are prepared to give advice on how to invite strangers to dinner, including a list of cooperating community organizations. You might also

consider asking four people or couples who are already acquaintances to each bring people who are strangers to you, for dinner. Interested strangers may visit passthebreadcelebratecommunity.wordpress.com, or e-mail passthebreadcelebrateco mmunity@gmail.com. They are also welcome to call Garell at 970-879-2767 or Ross-Bryant at 303-817-1855. Milligan is attracted to the idea of Pass the Bread as a way to cross as many community barriers as possible. “We are part of one community. We can do this together and share the things that make this a community we want to stay in,” she said. Tom Ross is a longtime Steamboat resident.
