The death of a loved one, friend or coworker from suicide can leave the survivors numb and overcome with shock and disbelief. This, Ronna Autrey knows well. There is no easy answer to getting through it, but talking with fellow survivors and understanding the grief process provides a major help, Autrey said. She lost an adult son to suicide seven years ago. The Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide group will host a community forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. The forum will feature experts and survivors. The recent death of Slopeside Grill owner Chris Corna, ruled a suicide by a medical examiner in New York, has elicited a strong reaction from the community. That reaction prompted REPS workers to hold the meeting, said Autrey, the nonprofit group’s suicide prevention coordinator. “Many times, it’s just out of the blue, and it takes everybody by surprise, and then denial sets in,” Autrey said, stating clearly that she was speaking generally about suicide and not specifically about Corna’s death. “We See REPS, back page

Risk factors Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is defined as the sudden death of an infant younger than 1 year of age that remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation. Risk factors for SIDS include sleeping on the baby’s stomach, soft sleep surfaces, sleeping with big or bulky items, birth to smokers or exposure to smoke, being between 1 and six months of age, prematurity or low birth weight, inadequate prenatal care and being male.

Today, swaddling babies shortly after birth is a standard in many hospitals including YVMC’s Family Birth Place. Being wrapped tightly in a blanket mimics the effect of the mother’s womb and brings comfort to the baby. Local pediatrician Sheila Fountain, M.D., said swaddling is known to have several benefits, among them enhancing sleep. “It helps babies regulate their sleep so that they sleep longer and more restfully,” Fountain said. “And the parents will get See Monday Medical, page 11

Svea Andrews, 9, rides the Yo Yo ride at the carnival in the Meadows parking lot in Steamboat Springs on Sunday.
Carnival a hit with crowd Organizers for school fundraiser happy with results STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
This wasn’t the ordinary Steamboat Springs carnival. In the Meadows parking lot during the weekend, rides and the standard boardwalk-type games — not to mention the funnel cakes and cotton candy — created a county fair atmosphere for many local families. But this carnival was a bit different, with a percentage of the proceeds going to Strawberry Park Elementary School. The first — and potentially annual — event drew large crowds Saturday night, Brown’s Amusements owner Danny Brown said, but the highest attendance nights for the carnival may be still to come. “It’s been OK for a first year,” he said. “But it’s about the third year they take off.” The amusement company, based in Mesa, Ariz., made its last appearance in Steamboat 10 or 11 years ago, Brown said. For this engagement, Strawberry Park Parent Teacher Information Committee member Beth DeBafis invited the group back to town to break the monotony of traditional school fundraisers. The carnival began Thursday and ran daily through Sunday. “I wanted to do a fundraiser that was fun and not just sell stuff any more,” she said. “It turns out that if you advertise it and sell advance tickets and really promote it, they will come. It doesn’t get too much easier than that with no expenses out.”
DeBafis said she hoped to net between $8,000 and $10,000 for the school. Brown said that was not an unreasonable goal, but he was unwilling to speculate on how much the carnival had made by Sunday afternoon. The final revenue figures should be available early this week, DeBafis said. Eating shaved ice in the 70degree, cloudy weather Sunday afternoon, 5 1/2-year-old Liv Mason said she had been to water parks and other amusement parks before but nothing like this in Steamboat. “It’s really fun,” she said. Her mother, Madeleine Mason, said the event seemed like a good idea on several levels. “I think it’s a great fundraiser. It’s providing entertainment and funds for the schools. It seems like a win-win to me,” she said. Brown said he would be willing to come back to Steamboat in future years, though no contract has been signed. DeBafis agreed that the project seemed worthwhile, and she would like to invite the amusement company back. “I think it’s hard in Steamboat because we have so many carnivals, per se, that now that people know it’s a real carnival with rides and amusement, it will drive more sales,” she said. The parents group plans to spend the money on supplies and technology that can’t be provided for by the school’s regular budget. Strawberry Park PTIC President Bethany Aurin previously said the group gen-
erally provides about $20,000 in fundraising dollars to the school each year. Aurin said the carnival took the place of the group’s wrapping paper sale, which usually is held in the fall. — To reach Zach Fridell, call 871-4208 or e-mail zfridell@steamboatpilot.com

What to do if a big chill is predicted

ooled again, huh? It happens every year. The weather turns warm in May, the garden centers entice us with newly arrived plants, which we immediately place in the garden. Then, the nights turn cold, and we experience a frost. Planting before our magic average annual date of last Spring frost, June 15, is virtually an invitation to Mother Nature to show us who’s in charge here. So a chilling frost is predictable. If you have plants in pots out on the patio, consider moving them to a protected environment such as a cool

garage, under the eaves of your house or a greenhouse. If kept outdoors, place a thick layer of sawdust or ground bark around the pot for the night. Those roots are more exposed to cold than roots in the ground. The most vulnerable plants in your garden will be those planted in open areas exposed to the air on all sides, particularly those with northern exposures. If you have hollows or low areas, those also will catch and

Another protection includes walls of water (the commercially available kind or plastic jugs filled with water) surrounding tender plants. Be sure to remove plant coverings the next day since incoming heat from the sun could become trapped inside the ‘tent’ you’ve created and injure your plant. If your plants become damaged by frost, don’t be too quick to prune them. This may stimulate new growth that may be damaged by another later frost. Also, it’s easy to mistake some of the damaged foliage as being dead when it is just recovering slowly.

hold cold air as it sinks toward the ground. One of the first things to consider doing if a frost is predicted is to make sure the ground around the plants is moist. Soil with moisture in it holds the heat from the day longer and releases more of it to keep plants warmer than dry soil does. Coverings on plants susceptible to frost are another precaution. Consider burlap, layers of newspaper weighted with rocks or evergreen boughs to cover the plants. Plastic coverings also are good at keeping heat in, but anywhere the plastic touches the plant may cause frost burn so use stakes to raise the plastic above the plants’ foliage. For small plants, create a tent that traps warm air by covering with a plastic jug or box with a rock placed on top to keep it from blowing away.

spitting cobras do emit a variety of odors when alarmed. I also learned that the world’s largest spitting cobra, 9 feet long, was discovered in Kenya two years ago. It packed enough punch to kill 15 grown men. Another common snake in Kenya is the black mamba. Black mambas aren’t black, they’re green, and considered the world’s most aggressive and poisonous snake. One day, I returned to the Rescue Centre from a day in town and was told by some of the girls that Kunguru (the watchman at the centre, and “Baba” to the girls) had killed a black mamba in the yard. Black mambas are considered so poisonous that Kenyans won’t bury one after killing it because the body will poison the

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?
Let the games begin Paul Greenberg
TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
Here we go again. Every time a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court is nominated, inevitably in these times and regularly in the past, the debate is conducted in the middle of an ideological and cultural minefield. One of the favorite tactics in this low sport is to take highly selected quotations from the record to inflame opinion against the president’s choice. Here, for example, is a much cited Greenberg excerpt from a speech by the latest nominee, Her Honor Sonia Sotomayor of the prestigious Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York, the same body that the legendary Learned Hand once ornamented: “Justice (Sandra Day) O’Connor has often been cited as saying that a wise old man and wise old woman will reach the
same conclusion in deciding cases. I am ... not so sure that I agree with the statement. First ... there can never be a universal definition of wise. Second, I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.” This quote is supposed to demonstrate the judge’s ethnic and sexual prejudices, at least to the casual reader, but what strikes me is not any chauvinistic twist that can be given her words but the caution of her phrasing. Note how carefully — yes, judiciously — she embeds multiple reservations in her opinion: She is not so sure she would agree with Sandra Day O’Connor. Judge Sotomayor’s tentative tone fits right in with the judicial temperament wanted in a Supreme Court justice: She “would hope” that a wise Latina woman, and one “with the richness of her expe-
riences,” would “more often than not” reach a better conclusion than a white male who hadn’t shared those experiences. Fair enough. At the moment there’s some disagreement about whether the current nominee to the high court is the first Hispanic American to be so honored. More amusing than enlightening, this kind of disputation mainly demonstrates how misleading ethnic labels can be. Some argue that the first Hispanic nominee to the court actually was Benjamin Nathan Cardozo (1870 to 1938). He also was picked at a time when ethnicity was all the rage, though not in the same way it is today. Back in 1932, many considered Judge Cardozo’s being a Jew a disadvantage if not a provocation, while today, Judge Sotomayor’s ethnicity and sex are clearly a political advantage in a nominee — if not the decisive reason for her being chosen in the first place. See Greenberg, page 9
Cum laude in evading bandits Nicholas D. Kristof THE NEW YORK TIMES
One of the great failures of American universities is that they are far too parochial, rarely exposing students to worlds beyond our borders. If colleges provide credit for dozing through an introductory Spanish class, why not give credit for a “gap year” in a Bolivian village? If students can learn about microfinance while sitting comatose in 9 a.m. lectures, couldn’t they Kristof learn more by volunteering with a lender in a Bangladesh slum? So with summer starting, it’s up to students themselves to self-educate by setting off on their own. I hold my “win a trip” contest precisely to encourage such trips — I’m just back from visit-

ing five West African countries with a University of South Carolina student. Yet when I encourage students’ wanderlust, questions invariably arise: Will I be safe? How do I avoid robbers and malaria? In response, here are 15 tips for traveling to even the roughest of countries — and back: 1. Carry a “decoy wallet,” so that if you are robbed by bandits with large guns, you have something to hand over. I keep $40 in my decoy wallet, along with an old library card and frequent-flier card. (But don’t begrudge the wallet: When my travel buddy was pickpocketed in Peru, we tried to jump the pickpocket, who turned out to be backed by an entire gang ... ) 2. Carry cash and your passport where no robber will find it. Assuming that few bandits read this column, I’ll disclose that I carry mine in a pouch that loops onto my belt and tucks under
my trousers. 3. Carry a tiny ski lock with a 6-foot retractable wire. Use it to lock your backpack to a hotel bed when you’re out, or to the rack of a train car. 4. At night, set a chair against your hotel door so that it will tip over and crash if someone slips in at 4 a.m. And lift the sheet to look for bloodstains on the mattress — meaning bed bugs. 5. When it gets dark, always carry a headlamp in your pocket. I learned that from a friend whose hotel in Damascus lost power. He lacked a light but was able to feel his way up the stairs in the dark, find his room and walk in. A couple of final gropes, and he discovered it wasn’t his room after all. Unfortunately, it was occupied. 6. If you’re a woman held up in an isolated area, stick out your stomach, pat it and signal that you’re pregnant. See Kristof, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

Every trap will be sprung in opposition Another sign of how the times have changed, and not for the better, is how Justice Cardozo came to be selected: against all partisan, political and cultural odds. For there was already another, perhaps as great or greater justice of the Supreme Court (Louis Dembitz Brandeis) occupying the one-seat ghetto informally reserved for a Jew on the court. Also, Judge Cardozo, a Democrat, would have to be nominated by a Republican president, Herbert Hoover. Which he was. And for no better reason than his being the most brilliant, profound and eminently qualified scholar and jurist available for the seat.
Today, every dubious quote and decision that can be traced to Sonia Sotomayor will be used against her, while her identity as a Latina will be waved like a banner by her supporters, each side erecting the most elaborate case for/against her on the slimmest of foundations. The games already have begun as one side plays identity politics for a lot more than it’s worth and the other paints the lady from the Bronx as some kind of wild-eyed radical. Case in point: Mike Huckabee, who made a lot better governor of Arkansas than he does a legal analyst, plunged into the debate with a broadside against the nominee worthy of a talk-show host. “The appoint-
ment of Maria Sotomayor,” he declared, “is the clearest indication yet that President Obama’s campaign promises to be a centrist and think in a bipartisan way were mere rhetoric. Sotomayor comes from the far left and will likely leave us with something akin to the Extreme Court.” Quite aside from the former governor’s tendency to substitute a colorful quip for thoughtful judgment, he couldn’t even get the lady’s name right. (Hey, they’re all named Maria, right?) And the games have only begun. Before they’re over, every dubious decision and contextfree quote that can be used against the nominee will be, and every sneaky trap sprung.
Do not miss the magic of escaping comfort Kristof continued from 8 You might also invest in a cheap wedding band, for imaginary husbands deflect unwanted suitors. 7. Be wary of accepting drinks from anyone. Robbers sometimes use a date rape drug to knock out their victims — in bars, in trains, in homes. If presented with pre-poured drinks, switch them with your host, cheerfully explaining: “This is an American good luck ritual!” 8. Buy a secondhand local cell phone for $20, outfit it with a local SIM card and keep it in your pocket. 9. When you arrive in a new city, don’t take an airport taxi unless you know it is safe. If you do take a cab, choose a scrawny driver and lock all the doors — thieves may pull open the doors at a red light and run off with a bag.
10. Don’t wear a nice watch, for that suggests a fat wallet and also makes a target. I learned that lesson on my first trip to the Philippines: a robber with a machete had just encountered a Japanese businessman with a Rolex — who now, alas, has only one hand. 11. Look out for fake cops or crooked ones. If a policeman tries to arrest you, demand to see some ID and use your cell phone to contact a friend. 12. If you are held up by bandits with large guns, shake hands respectfully with each of your persecutors. It’s very important to be polite to people who might kill you. Surprisingly often, child soldiers and other bandits will reciprocate your fake friendliness and settle for some cash rather than everything you possess. I’ve even had thugs warmly exchange addresses with me,
after robbing me. 13. Remember that the scariest people aren’t warlords, but drivers. In buses, I sometimes use my pack as an airbag; after one crash I was the only passenger not hospitalized. 14. If terrorists finger you, break out singing “O Canada”! 15. Finally, don’t be so cautious that you miss the magic of escaping your comfort zone and mingling with local people and staying in their homes. The risks are minimal compared with the wonders of spending time in a small village. So take a gap year, or volunteer in a village or a slum. And even if everything goes wrong and you are robbed and catch malaria, shrug it off — those are precisely the kinds of authentic interactions with local cultures that, in retrospect, enrich a journey and life itself.

Awareness key to stopping elder abuse
Editor’s Note: This article first was published Aug. 8, 2008. Information has been updated for accuracy.
June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month Sherry Bray, long-term care ombudsman for Moffat County, will speak about elder abuse issues at noon Wednesday at the American Legion during Wellness Wednesdays in Craig. For more information, call 871-7676.

SPECIAL TO THE PILOT & TODAY
When Vickie Clark became director of the Routt County Department of Human Services last year, she was surprised to learn that only six referrals regarding possible abuse of atrisk adults were made in the county in the previous year. “When people ask me why … I’m going to guess that part of it is a lack of awareness to what the issues are and the resources that are available,” she said. Clark, a former supervisor of adult protective services in Mesa County, noted that all the reports turned out to be situations of self-neglect. However, she suspects there are more possible adult abuse cases in Routt County that are not being reported. Her experience has shown that referrals typically increase as the public becomes more conscious of elder abuse problems.
Who is at risk
Elder abuse is any knowing, intended or careless act that causes harm or serious risk of harm to an older person. It includes physical, mental and sexual abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, abandonment and self-neglect, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse. Between 2002 and 2004, more than 50 percent of clients of Adult Protective Services programs in Colorado were age 75 or older. In 2006, more than half of Colorado APS cases involved situations of self-neglect. About 22 percent involved caregiver neglect, while financial exploitation accounted for about 16
percent of cases and other abuse about 9 percent, according to data from Colorado Adult Protective Services. Elder abuse can happen to anyone, though certain factors can make a person more vulnerable. These include illness, frailty, physical disability, mental impairment and living with or depending on a person with a history of mental illness, hostility, or alcohol or drug abuse. Although some abuse occurs in long-term living facilities, the vast majority of cases involve abuse in the home by family members, old or “new” friends, or service providers in a position of trust, according to the American Psychological Association. Some elder abuse may be a continuation of marital or family violence that has taken place throughout many years or the result of stress triggered by lifestyle adjustments and the difficulty of caring for an increasingly dependent older person, the association notes.
Recognize, report abuse Referrals of possible elder abuse to APS typically come from medical staff and community groups, concerned individuals, and members of the criminal justice or government communities. There are many warning signs of elder abuse, such as slap or pressure marks or certain kinds of burns or blisters, which may indicate physical abuse. Untreated bed sores, the

need for medical or dental care, dirty clothing, poor hygiene and grooming and unusual weight loss are possible signs of selfneglect or neglect by a caregiver. Emotional abuse or neglect may cause a person to withdraw from normal activities, be less alert or behave unusually. Exploitation may be signified by sudden changes in a person’s finances and accounts, altered wills and trusts, unusual bank withdrawals or loss of property, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse. A person may be abusive if they seem to control an elder’s actions, isolate the elder from family and friends and be emotionally or financially dependent on the elder. Although it’s been difficult to pinpoint how many older adults are abused, research suggests only one in 14 elder abuse incidents in the home are reported to authorities. Several factors that may contribute to the lack of reporting elder abuse incidents include isolation of older adults in rural areas as well as cultural and societal attitudes emphasizing autonomy and privacy. Kathy Rickart, former coordinator of Colorado Coalition for Elder Rights and Adult Protection, which provides education and resources about elder rights issues, said these attitudes can be common in ethnic and immigrant populations.
• Routt County Human Services: 8791540 The Colorado Long-term Care Ombudsman Program assists residents of licensed long-term care facilities in protecting their health, safety and welfare. To speak with an ombudsman, call 879-0633 in Routt County or 871-7659 in Moffat County.
Abuse awareness among friends and family can be particularly important in rural areas where they can be a support and resource to victims in place of lacking programs and services, she said. “The skill of the professional is key along with creating abuse awareness among the general public,” Rickart said. “Mental illness used to be hid in the closet, but with education, more and more people no longer feel stigmatized if they have a mental illness. Abuse will have to travel the same educational path.” Once a county department of social/human services receive a referral about possible abuse, staff assess the situation and determine what kind of services in the community, such as medical care, counseling, home health or other programs, will help the person in their situation. More dire or extreme circumstances may require the help of law enforcement or other agencies. “Basically, our job is to go out and advocate for the rights of that person a lot of times,” Clark said. She emphasized that competent adults have the right to refuse some or all help offered to them by APS, even if staff feels it is not in the person’s best interest.
Preventing abuse Competent older adults can take a number of steps to prevent themselves from being
mistreated. These include staying busy and engaged in life, cultivating a strong network of family and friends and taking care of themselves to stay as independent as possible. Older adults also should refuse to allow anyone to add their name to the person’s bank account without their consent and never should make financial decisions under pressure or sign over money or property to anyone without getting legal advice, according to recommendations from the National Center on Elder Abuse. Elder abuse within the home can be averted by proactive family choices, such as seeking counseling or help change longtime patterns of behavior, conflict or addictions or deal with current stresses, recommends the American Psychological Association. Caregivers should do their best to minimize stress by taking time for themselves. Many communities offer adult day services and/or respite programs that will care for older adults while caregivers work or attend their own needs. It’s also helpful for families to stay social and connect with families in similar situations. Concerned citizens can prevent or end abuse by reaching out to vulnerable neighbors, friends or family members, especially those isolated because of physical, cultural or geographical circumstances. They also may volunteer with community programs that provide older adults companionship and help in their homes. Finally, if they suspect someone is being abused or are neglecting themselves, they should report the situation to the county department of social/human services where that person lives. Referral sources are kept confidential and may be anonymous.

3-sport athletes aren’t a thing of the past
C
hoosing the Routt County High School Athletes of the Year is never as easy as I’d like it to be. It’s certainly not hard to come up with a list of worthy local athletes. But choosing just one can be a tedious venture. This year’s winners were Holli Salazar, from Hayden, and Alex Wood, from Steamboat Springs. Each was profiled in Sunday’s sports section. It’s hard to not select student-athletes who have won state championships and medals at year-end events. But this year’s two selections each have something in common — something that made them stand out beyond the others. Salazar and Wood weren’t just three-sport athletes, they were phenomenal in all three sports they played. The multi-sport athlete is dying at the high school level. Nowadays, everything is so specialized that athletes oftentimes have to pick one sport and stick to it. The push to play sports beyond high school has taken the incentive away from playing multiple sports. It’s sad to say and sad to see, but if a young athlete wants to play in college or garner consideration from college, they have to almost specialize in one — maybe two — sports. It can be a year-round thing for most athletes. Take a look at Steamboat’s Austin Hinder, who just verbally committed to play football at the University of California-Berkley. Hinder, a heck of an athlete in his own right, spends his summers competing at national camps. Sure, See Graham, page 19

Michael Hurley said he ducked between two defenders and ran as fast as he possibly could. “I don’t know what I’m doing half the time,” the Steamboatbased rugby player said. “But I ran like my life depended on it.”
He made it through 40 wide open meters and, with his score, delivered the coup de grace to the Las Vegas Blackjacks, ensuring that his team, the Gentlemen of Aspen, would win the National Club Championships Division 1 national championship. The side defeated Las Vegas, 25-8. Aspen, with four Steamboat players playing key roles, defeated the Atlanta Renegades, 7610, in the semifinals.
“This is probably the best victory I’ve had in my life,” Hurley said. “I played in some good matches back in Australia, but this is amazing. It’s the best sporting feeling I’ve had in my life, and these are the best bunch of guys I’ve ever been a part of.” Hurley was joined on the team by Steamboat players Chris Baumann, Abel Varney and Nick Nespeca.
After advancing by winning its first two games in the 16team tournament, the squad dismantled Atlanta on Saturday to advance to the championship game. “We tossed them all over the pitch,” Hurley said. The team then entered the final as the favorite after Vegas upset a team from Pearl City, See Rugby, page 19

Adrian Gonzalez may be on a torrid home run pace, but even he isn’t that impressed with his totals. “I’ll see where the numbers are at the end of the year because May means nothing,” he said. Gonzalez hit his major-league leading 20th home run, Chad
Gaudin struck out a season-high nine and the San Diego Padres beat the ColoraSUNDAY’S GAME: do Rockies, 5-2, on Sunday. Rockies 2 Brad Hawpe Padres 5 and Yorvit Torrealba had two hits each for Colorado, which lost for the first time under interim manager Jim Tracy, who replaced the
fired Clint Hurdle on Friday. Gonzalez’s 20 home runs by June 1 are the most in franchise history. The previous record was 17 by Greg Vaughn in 1988 and Nate Colbert in 1970. “What he does at the plate is very impressive. It doesn’t surprise me,” San Diego manager Bud Black said. “I’ve seen it too often.” Scott Hairston also homered and Heath Bell recorded his
15th save in 16 chances for the Padres, who salvaged the final game of the three-game series. Gonzalez and Hairston backed up a strong pitching performance from their starter. Gaudin (2-3) struck out eight through four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. He allowed consecutive oneout singles to Troy Tulowitzki See Rockies, page 19

The Detroit Red Wings’ Darren Helm, left, celebrates a goal by teammate Jonathan Ericsson in front of Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury during the second period in Game 2 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on Sunday. The Red Wings beat the Penguins, 3-1, to take a 2-0 series lead.
Rookie defenseman Jonathan Ericsson, who watched that series clincher Wednesday night in the dressing room hours after having his appendix removed, scored the tying goal for Detroit in the second period. Valtteri Filppula added the
go-ahead tally 6:08 later, and Justin Abdelkader scored his second of the series in the third. The Red Wings left the ice in front of their cheering, towelwaving fans and headed for Pittsburgh with another commanding lead.

The Red Wings found a perfect way to move halfway to a repeat — beat the Pittsburgh Penguins back-to-back. So much for Detroit being old, beaten down and needing a break. The Red Wings topped the Penguins, 3-1, in Game 2 of the finals Sunday night and are two wins from holding onto the Stanley Cup. Just as they did a year ago in winning the title for the 11th time and fourth in 11 seasons, the Red Wings took the first two games from the Penguins at home. This year posed a new challenge, sweeping a pair on consecutive nights three days after finishing the Western Conference finals.

She often was the focal point of most opponents’ game plans. Although the track season didn’t end the way she had hoped, Salazar still was regarded as one of the best throwers in the state.
Wood was equally impressive. He dominated in football, basketball and baseball. He was a man among boys in all three sports, earning the praise from coaches across the Western Slope League and the state. So although the three-sport athlete rapidly is becoming a thing of the past, Salazar and Wood proved it’s still a viable thing. And for that, the two earned the distinction of Routt County High School Athletes of the Year.

LeBron James finally talked about not making the NBA finals, and insists Cleveland’s loss to Orlando will not impact his future with the Cavaliers. James stormed out of Amway Arena without speaking to the media Saturday night after the Cavs were eliminated with a 103-
90 loss to the Magic in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals. The league MVP, who also did not shake hands with Olympic teammate Dwight Howard or congratulate any Orlando players as he left the floor, said Sunday that he’s happy in Cleveland and feels the Cavs made major progress this season.
“I’m great. I feel great about this situation that’s going on,” James said. “You want to continue to get better, that’s all you can ask. We got better, and I feel this team will be better next season. You don’t want to take a step backward. I think we went forward from the Boston series (a Game 7 loss in the semis) last year. “Hopefully we can go forward next year.”

Hurley’s dash led to his team’s final points of the game. “It was a really tough first half,” he said. “Then, in the second, we just ground them up. We started clicking into gear
is like 1-0.” Gaudin allowed two runs on seven hits and didn’t walk a batter in 6 2/3 innings. “I was locating my fastball and getting ahead of hitters,” said Gaudin, whose career high in strikeouts is 11. “When you do that, it allows you to expand the zone and get guys to chase.”
and won the game.” Aspen coach Freddy Waititi said the team’s diverse roster helped it to the national title. “You start thinking about how none of us live together and we can’t always train together; seems every obstacle that got in our way just made us a better unit,” he said. “That is the sort of thing that makes me most proud of the guys.” — To reach Joel Reichenberger, call 871-4253 or e-mail jreichenberger@steamboatpilot.com
