Just tall enough to reach over the side of the pool table to line up his shot, 10-year-old Charlie Fisher hit the cue ball, sending the yellow 1-ball into the corner pocket. For the past month, Steamboat resident Heather Martyn has worked to open the club at the Human Services Center, which the Boys & Girls Club is renting from the Steamboat Springs School District. Last week, club employees and volunteers moved donated equipment, supplies and furnishings into the building. One-third of the club’s funding is through private donations, and the other two-
thirds comes from local, state and federal grants. But the process really began more than a year ago, when Martyn decided she wanted to do something for the community’s youths. She worked with resident Mary Brown and the Yampa Valley Community Foundation to open the club in Steamboat, which is a branch of the Boys & Girls Club of Craig.
