For the past month, Steamboat resident Heather Martyn has worked to open the club at the Human Services Center, which the Boys & Girls Club is renting from the Steamboat Springs School District. Last week, club employees and volunteers moved donated equipment, supplies and furnishings into the building. One-third of the club’s funding is through private donations, and the other two-
thirds comes from local, state and federal grants. But the process really began more than a year ago, when Martyn decided she wanted to do something for the community’s youths. She worked with resident Mary Brown and the Yampa Valley Community Foundation to open the club in Steamboat, which is a branch of the Boys & Girls Club of Craig.

Colorado winter, and now the constituents of Historic Routt County are pulling out all the stops. They even plan to have fun doing it. Live music, handcrafted birdhouses with diamond windows and even original artwork depicting the 90-plusyear-old cabin will carry the day 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Stagecoach State Park. The all-day fundraiser is planned to raise money to help with the restoration of the cabin that once was part of a stagecoach stop on the climb up Yellowjacket Pass. There will be group bicycle rides, fishing and food. The admission price of $15 a person (children younger than 12 will be admitted for free) covers the state parks entry pass and a donation. Towny Anderson, of Historic Routt County, pledged in a column in this newspaper in March to complete the restoration of the cabin. “Next fall, we will all see a restored Diamond Window Cabin once again standing proudly on the west side of Blacktail Mountain watching over Stagecoach Reservoir,” Anderson wrote. “How will we accomplish all this? With a little bit of luck, generous contributions, a lot of hard work and a new partnership with Colorado Mountain College’s Alpine Campus.” This summer, the sagging building will become a laboratory for a four-week course in the restoration of historic log build-

ings being conducted through Colorado Mountain College. It could prove to be just the tonic the historic building needs. For at least 90 years and perhaps longer, travelers in South Routt County have admired the simple architecture of the “Diamond Window Cabin.” Most likely, they first gazed at it from the windows of passing stagecoaches, and later from the power windows of sleek SUVs and big pickups cruising past Stagecoach Reservoir. The cabin is situated close to Routt County Road 14 on property owned by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. It is noteworthy for its squared log timbers, but most of all for the offset rectangular window beneath the gable. The diamond window is reminiscent of other historic buildings not far away in the upper end of Pleasant Valley. The Diamond Window Cabin is in a corner of the Morrison Creek Valley. It sits overlooking the historic route of a stagecoach line running north from the rail terminal at Wolcott to Steamboat Springs and Hahn’s Peak beyond. The annexation process for Steamboat 700 reaches an important juncture tonight as the developers and City Council furrow their brows regarding $80 million in public capital projects and how to pay for everything from roads to fire trucks to enhanced water rights. It’s presumed the city of Steamboat Springs would share in some of the costs, but how to divide them and how to plan for the possibility that the city’s excise and use taxes collected on new construction won’t be sufficient to satisfy the project’s thirst for dollars is a complex task. The developers estimate the excise and use taxes will generate between $20 and $28 million after Steamboat 700 build-out in 15 to 20 years. City officials worry those estimates are based on inflationary trends that may not come true. “The critical part is ensuring that there is a reliable

mechanism in place to fund all the public facilities necessary to serve that development” before annexation takes place, Planning Services Manager John Eastman said. The discussion will be of particular interest to members of the public concerned about traffic generated by the future residents of Steamboat 700. Steamboat 700, proposed on land just outside the city’s western boundary, someday could result in the development of 2,000 new residences. The planning vision for the neighborhoods in Steamboat 700 is similar to Old Town Steamboat Springs, city planner Jason Peasley said, with houses 10 feet apart on narrow lots with garages facing alleys
to the rear. The city’s list of public capital projects stretches to 27 different projects or equipment purchases.

Financing plan Steamboat 700 project manager Danny Mulcahy issued a statement Monday claiming the financing plan he will bring forward to a marathon City Council meeting tonight is sufficient to cover all but one of the 26 line items on the city’s list. The one exception is a new (estimated) $8 million public safety headquarters for the city. It would move the facility out of downtown and into Steamboat 700. Jean Townsend, a financial consultant working on the capital financing plan for Steamboat 700, confirmed that her clients do not think the development entity should have to fund a full share of the new public safety center because it is replacing an existing facility that serves the entire community.

Capt. Richard Mark, of the Pueblo Fire Department, was remembered Monday as an active, dedicated firefighter by his friends and fire chief. Mark died of an apparent heart attack Friday at Yampa Valley Medical Center while he was visiting Steamboat Springs for a muscular dystrophy fundraiser. Mark, 52, served with the Pueblo Fire Department for 21 years, working his way through the ranks of firefighter and driver to the position of captain, Chief Chris Riley said.
Riley said it was not uncommon for Mark to volunteer his time to charity. “Richard was involved in so many different things, and this is Mark one of the many things he was actively involved in and donated so much of his own time to,” Riley said. Mark’s close friend Kevin Kagey said Mark was a “work horse” when it came to community and charity events and was a regular organizer of a variety of activities. Mark was involved in the Firefighter Experience Day, Fire Station Open House and an

A series of summer classes that starts today is meant to inspire “writers in waiting,” said instructor and author Jill Murphy Long. “I just want people to enjoy the writing process, and I find ways to make that happen, hopefully,” Long said. From 3 to 4:30 p.m. today and every Tuesday through the summer, Long will lecture about the writing process and give tips about getting work published. Assignments could include eavesdropping on conversations to learn how to write dialogue and on-the-fly creative writing exercises. hat’s that bright star rising in the northeastern sky as darkness falls this month? It’s the star Vega, and its arrival is a sure sign that summer is just around the corner. Speaking of corners, Vega marks one corner of the wellknown asterism called the Summer Triangle and is the first corner of the triangle to pop up above the horizon. Vega is the alpha star in the constellation named Lyra the Harp. The name Vega translates into “the plunging vulture,” so named because it marks the head of a vulture holding the heavenly harp in his beak. Lyra represents the harp made from an empty tortoise shell by the famous mythological musician Orpheus. In addition to the flashy star Vega, this constellation includes a small but distinctive parallelogram of four stars that represents the strings of the harp and dangles below Vega as it rises in the northeastern sky after dusk. stellation and is easy to identify, primarily because of Vega. Astronomers have determined that Vega rotates with its axis pointed almost directly at the Earth and sun, which means that our sun might be the pole star as seen from some Vegan planet, just as Polaris happens to be the North Star for Earth. Brilliant Vega might be Lyra’s main claim to fame, but there are many others. The star marking the bottom right corner of the parallelogram is an unusual binary star named Sheliak. By chance alignment, once every 13 days, Sheliak’s fainter star eclipses its

brighter star, causing it to suddenly drop to one-half its normal brightness. Sheliak is one of the finest eclipsing binaries in the sky, and its variations in light can be followed with the unaided eye. Not far from Sheliak is the famous Ring Nebula, also known by its catalogue number, Messier 57, or M57 for short. What would have happened if hanging chads and the Supreme Court hadn’t denied Al Gore the White House in 2000? Many things clearly would have been different during the next eight years. But one thing probably would have been the same: There would have been a huge housing bubble and a financial crisis when the bubble burst. And if Democrats had been in power when the bad news Krugman arrived, they would have taken the blame, even though things surely would have been as bad or worse under Republican rule. You now understand the essentials of the current political situation in Britain. For much of the past 30 years, politics and policy in England and in America have moved in tandem. We had Reagan;
they had Thatcher. We had the Garn-St. Germain Act of 1982, which dismantled New Deal-era banking regulation; they had the Big Bang of 1986, which deregulated London’s financial industry. Both nations had an explosion of household debt and saw their financial systems become increasingly unsound. In both countries, the conservatives who pushed through deregulation lost power in the 1990s. In each case, however, the new leaders were as infatuated with “innovative” finance as their predecessors were. Robert Rubin, in his years as the Treasury secretary, and Gordon Brown, in his years as the Chancellor of the Exchequer, preached the same gospel. But where America’s conservative movement — better organized and far more ruthless than its British counterpart — managed to claw its way back to power at the beginning of this decade, in Britain, the Labor Party continued to rule right through the bubble years. Brown eventually became prime minister.
And so the Bush bust in America is the Brown bust here. Do Brown and his party really deserve blame for the crisis here? Yes and no. Brown bought fully into the dogma that the market knows best, that less regulation is more. In 2005, he called for “trust in the responsible company, the engaged employee and the educated consumer” and insisted that regulation should have “not just a light touch but a limited touch.” It might as well have been Alan Greenspan speaking. There’s no question that this zeal for deregulation set Britain up for a fall. Consider the counterexample of Canada — a mostly English-speaking country, every bit as much in the American cultural orbit as Britain, but one where Reagan/Thatcher-type financial deregulation never took hold. Sure enough, Canadian banks have been a pillar of stability in the crisis. See Krugman, page 9

A statue of Ronald Reagan was unveiled last week in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda at a time when many Republicans, and even some conservatives, think Reagan’s ideas are passe. Before moving on, Republicans, and those conservatives who don’t want to “live in the past,” should be asked what better ideas they have to offer. As the Obama administration and congressional Thomas Democrats move quickly with their new power to grab even more power and to build larger, more intrusive and costlier government, they — and we — should consider Reagan’s thoughts on the “Power of the individual, rather than government power and peace through strength to keep us

free.” And, “Man is not free unless government is limited.” And, “concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty.” As government acquires the auto industry and seeks to own health care; as it plans to take more money from the productive in order to subsidize the unproductive or less productive; as government evolves from nanny to a cruel and abusive guardian that will rob the individual of incentive and punish those who manage to succeed with crippling regulations and higher taxes, where are the champions of liberty and personal responsibility? Instead of stories many of us heard as children about people who grew up in difficult circumstances — alcoholic mother, abusive father, racial discrimination, physical handicaps — and rose to self-sufficiency, even prosperity, we get messages that say you can’t do it on your own and you will never amount to anything unless you place your faith in government.
“You can do it,” parents tell their children as they urge them to higher levels of achievement. This sentiment used to be found in popular culture, including feel-good films that inspired people to achieve their ideals. Now, we punish the successful and make the pursuit of success more difficult because of strangulating government. Why must government “fix” health care? Since government does few things well, why aren’t better minds than politicians leading the way? We know what works. It isn’t collectivism and government bureaucrats telling us what type of health care they will allow us to have, it is individuals employing innovation that will bring transformation. But here’s the thing. While Brown and his party may deserve to be punished, their political opponents don’t deserve to be rewarded. After all, would a Conservative government have been any less in the thrall of free-market fundamentalism, any more willing to rein in runaway finance, during the past decade? Of course not. And Brown’s response to the crisis — a burst of activism to make up for his past passivity — makes sense, whereas that of his opponents does not. The Brown government has moved aggressively to shore up troubled banks. This potentially has put taxpayers on the hook for large future bills, but the financial situation has stabilized. Brown has backed the Bank of England, which, like the Federal
Reserve, has engaged in unconventional moves to free up credit. And he has shown himself willing to run large budget deficits now, even while scheduling substantial tax increases for the future. All of this seems to be working. Leading indicators have turned (slightly) positive, suggesting that Britain, whose competitiveness has benefited from the devaluation of the pound, will begin an economic recovery well before the rest of Europe. Meanwhile, David Cameron, the Conservative leader, has had little to offer other than to raise the red flag of fiscal panic and demand that the British government tighten its belt immediately. Now, many commentators have raised the alarm about Britain’s fiscal outlook, and one rating agency has warned that the country may lose its AAA
status (although the others disagree). But markets don’t seem unduly worried: The interest rate on long-term British debt is only slightly higher than that on German debt, not what you’d expect from a country doomed to bankruptcy. Still, if an election were held today, Brown and his party would lose badly. They were in power when the bad stuff happened, and the buck — or in this case, I guess, the quid — stops at No. 10 Downing St. It’s a sobering prospect. If I were a member of the Obama administration’s economic team — a team whose top members were as enthusiastic about the wonders of modern finance as their British counterparts — I’d be looking across the Atlantic and muttering, “There but for the disgrace of Bush v. Gore go I.”

Why aren’t more people raising the profile of these proven solutions, which have cut costs and improved patient care at hospitals that have implemented them? Some years ago, CBS News correspondent Lesley Stahl reported on a jobs program run out of a Harlem housing project in New York City. These
were the hardcore unemployed who either had never had a job or couldn’t hold onto one. All were minorities. The leader asked, “How many think racism is a problem in America?” Every hand went up. He then said, “So what? Your problem isn’t racism; your problem is attitude, and that’s what we’re going to change.” He taught them how to dress, how to shake hands and look prospective employers in the eye. Cameras followed one woman to an interview. She got the job and began to cry. She had discovered her value and the power of the individual. Government didn’t give her that job; she got it on her own. In fact, government had been sending her checks, which caused her to be more depen-
dent on government. As politicians prepare to do things for which government has little experience and even less ability, where are the leaders who will again embrace the power behind Ronald Reagan’s thoughts? It was Reagan who said, “Governments tend not to solve problems, only to rearrange them.” He warned, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.” Government is eroding freedom. It is time to fight, but where are the generals to lead us? Will the public wake up and realize what is being stolen from us before it is gone?

Jim Steinberg took first place in a ForeWord Magazine contest for his latest book, “Colorado Scenic Byways: Taking the Other Road.” Steinberg, a longtime Steamboat Springs photographer who owns Portfolio Publications and The Portfolio Collection, was honored June 1, along with 219 other authors in 61 categories, according to a news release from ForeWord. “Colorado Scenic Byways” took gold in the travel guide category, beating out a guide to Los Angeles attractions and a book about backcountry roads in Idaho to take top honors. Librarians and booksellers who specialize in their contest areas judged the book awards, according to the release.
Steinberg’s book, which pairs photos taken from Colorado’s designated byway system with descriptive text by Susan J. Tweit, also is nominated for the pictorial category of the 2009 Colorado Book Awards, presented by the nonprofit Colorado Humanities. The book was an official gift from Gov. Bill Ritter to Democratic governors at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. An effort that took more than two years to complete, “Colorado Scenic Byways” kept Steinberg on the road taking photos for about 200 days in 2007, he said in a July 2008 interview. Eastman said Slate Creek would be an important roadway for alleviating traffic at U.S. Highway 40 and C.R. 129. He said it is anticipated in the West of Steamboat Springs Area Plan and that Mulcahy has been aware of it. Mulcahy responded that the road crosses developable property under separate ownership and the burden of funding the road should be placed on that landowner at the appropriate time. He thinks his obligation should end at preparing a road junction for Slate Creek on Steamboat 700 land. Mulcahy also would like to be absolved from paying for a pedestrian underpass at Routt County Road 42 that someday could link to a new K-8 public school. He argues that he already is committed to helping pay for the school. Finally, Mulcahy does not think he and his partners in Steamboat 700 should have to pay for U.S. Highway 40 improvements closest to down-
town Steamboat, like the U.S. 40/13th Street bottleneck. “These improvements have been a community issue for decades,” Mulcahy wrote in a June 4 memo to City Council. “This road segment is substandard now at today’s peak traffic times, and the need for these improvements is not attributable to (west Steamboat) development. If the city elects to move forward with these improvements, costs should be shared citywide.” Eastman said the city and the developers are optimistic that state and federal highway funds will become available several years in the future to help the defray of all of the U.S. 40 improvements Steamboat 700 would require.
New developments The primary questions planning staff will be asking of City Council tonight, Eastman said include: ■ Is the list of capital needs complete and have appropriate triggers for each project been set? ■ Are the (dollar) allocations reasonable and appropriate? ■ Is there an adequate plan in place to fund all of the capital needs in the event that the city is unable to fund its share up front? “The pre-annexation explicitly says (if the city is unable to contribute), Steamboat 700 will fund 100 percent (of the total)
and the city will pay its share back if possible,” Eastman said. A development in the funding strategy that came forward just last week is a Steamboat 700 proposal to impose five mills of property tax within its boundary solely for the purpose of funding the capital for public infrastructure. The tax would sunset when the projects were paid for, Eastman said. Eastman said the proposal is so new that city staff has not had adequate time to analyze it. Asked if the property tax would apply to the mandated affordable housing units in Steamboat 700, Townsend said, “To the extent the Housing Authority builds and owns them, they would be exempt. That’s the plan and that’s our understanding.” Mulcahy expressed confidence in his June 4 memo that the funding plan as put forward will meet all of the development’s capital needs, excluding the public safety headquarters. “There is no gap” between those amounts, he wrote. Eastman responded, “There is definitely a gap. If the Red Wings win this Game 6 today, a year and five days after winning their last one there, it will be more than an image to the Penguins. It will be an instant replay. Not since Montreal clinched in Boston in 1977 and 1978 has
a team won the Stanley Cup in the same opponent’s building two seasons in a row, but the Red Wings gladly will take another clincher in Pittsburgh if it means avoiding an everdangerous Game 7. “It’s obviously a special night when you know you have a chance to win the Cup in one single hockey game,” goalie Chris Osgood. Kobe Bryant has changed his look. Gone is the teeth-baring, nose-flaring, eyes-on-the-prize scowl that the Los Angeles Lakers star showed again and again in Game 1 of the NBA finals. The intensity diminished after Game 2, his expression morphing into one of relief and sheer luck. A botched layup by Magic rookie Courtney Lee is perhaps the biggest reason why these finals are not tied and why Bryant isn’t smiling even with his team up 2-0. That level of seriousness might be cause for Orlando to grimace. The Magic nearly returned from Los Angeles with the bestof-seven series tied. Instead, they’re down 2-0, and now Bryant has a promise for Game 3 tonight. “We’re about to kick it up,” he said. “You’d better believe it. We’re close. You see what I’m saying? This is the finals. We’re going to be ready to go.” For all the bravado, the Lakers can be careless, a team with holes and an inability to finish off an opponent as a champion must. They let Houston extend a series despite the absence of Yao Ming. Denver outmuscled and outhustled a Lakers team that seemed to lose its enthusiasm until Game 6 of the conference finals. Los Angeles thinks those days are over. “We’re playing tougher,” forward Pau Gasol said. “We understand what it takes to go get the championship.” This is a franchise closing in on its 15th title. It is facing Magic team still searching for its first finals victory. Bryants insists this is no time to get comfortable. “What’s there to be happy about?” he asked. “The job’s not finished.”

No one is surprised when Tiger Woods wins a golf tournament. One reason he left Muirfield Village so satisfied with his second victory of the year is that Woods wasn’t surprised, either. What most people will remember about his 7under 65 in the Woods final round of the Memorial, which allowed him to make up a fourshot deficit, is the flawless finish. In a four-way tie for the lead as he stood on the 17th tee, Woods closed with two birdies, from 9 feet to take the lead, and a 7-iron from 183 yards to a foot that will become part of Memorial lore. Woods, however, has a longer memory. “It wasn’t just the last two holes,” he said. “It was all week.” He only missed five fairways at Muirfield Village, matching his
most accurate tournament off the tee in his 13 years on tour (he also hit 49 fairways at the 1998 Masters). Woods twice hit powerful drives down the middle of the fairway on the par-5 15th on the weekend, both times leading to birdie. On the par-5 fifth Saturday, with enough breeze in his face that 3-wood wasn’t quite enough, he choked up 2 inches on a driver and hit a baby cut, setting up another easy birdie. In the worst of the wind, he controlled the flight of his irons. “I didn’t really have a problem hitting it either way,” Woods said. That’s when you feel like you’re in control of what you’re doing.” Then came the most telling comment of all. “I didn’t hit any surprises out there,” he said. Nothing bothers Woods more than the double miss, not knowing whether an errant shot is going left or right. That’s what he took to the first tee in the final round at the Masters and at The Players Championship. He didn’t finish either of those
tournaments very well, leading to speculation that his game was not where it should be. Just because he won the Memorial in his final tournament before the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black is no reason for the other 155 players to stay home in two weeks. Remember, the hype was cranked up after Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in his final tune-up before the Masters. A month later, some made it sound as though he was in a slump. But there was something different about Memorial. “If you look at how I won at Bay Hill, I only had 101 putts,” he said. “Anyone who has 100 putts should win a tournament. I didn’t do it the way I did this week.” What he had been missing was the ability to hit balls after his rounds, which Woods had not done for a year before surgery as ligaments in his left knee eroded. That changed last month, when he went to the range for two days at Quail Hollow, more often at The Players Championship, then a lot more at home.

Kyle Busch always has bucked the system, embracing the notoriety that comes with being NASCAR’s newest bad boy. He doesn’t care if race fans dislike him — and boy, do they ever — and he makes no apologies for knocking people out of his way en route to Victory Lane. His rejection Busch of conformity is genuine, and Busch does everything he can to avoid being grouped as just another politically correct NASCAR driver shilling for a sponsor. So if he’s aware of the growing backlash surrounding his guitar-smashing celebration after a Nationwide Series win at Nashville, it’s doubtful Busch even cares. But this time, even his most ardent supporters wonder if
Busch went too far. See, it wasn’t just any guitar that Busch whacked three times against the ground before tossing the chipped steel instrument aside. No, it was a revered Gibson Les Paul guitar that had been hand painted by longtime NASCAR artist Sam Bass and has become the symbol of Nashville Speedway. Bass initially said he was stunned Saturday night to see Busch climb from his car, accept the trophy, then attempt to destroy it. But he had softened after speaking to Busch in Victory Lane where the driver explained that Nashville had frustrated him for so long, he had promised his crew that if he ever claimed one of the coveted guitars, he’d smash it and share the pieces with the entire team. On Monday, however, Bass told NASCAR Scene he was heartbroken to see Busch de-

Please don’t. Let us give you a prop guitar.”’ Busch’s celebration was not meant to be disrespectful toward Bass, the speedway, sponsors or fans. Instead, it was sincere emotion from a driver who had flirted several times with victory at Nashville, only to come up empty in seven previous tries. After finally breaking through for a dominating win, the smashing of the guitar was, in Busch’s mind, nothing more than an exorcising of demons. Only nobody else sees it that way. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Sam Bass and those people at Gibson that make those beautiful trophies,” said three-time Nashville winner Carl Edwards. “You definitely will not see me smashing one of them.” Brad Keselowski, either. So thrilled to earn one of the guitars last June, he carried it all over the garage during post-race inspection and then fell asleep cradling it during the plane ride home. TENNIS — FRENCH OPEN a four-shot deficit to win in Dublin, Ohio. “I was yelling at the TV, the whole deal.” It’s a shame more people in the United States weren’t watching, too. NBC’s coverage of Federer’s 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4 victory against Robin Soderling at Roland Garros drew a 1.8 overnight rating — meaning fewer than 2 percent of homes with televisions in the country’s largest markets tuned in. The team to watch at this month’s Confederations Cup looks like Brazil, not European champion Spain. A 4-0 victory at Uruguay put Brazil on top of World Cup qualifying in South America. Now, it hosts longtime leader Paraguay on Wednesday. More important, the nearly perfect performance in Montevideo, where Brazil had not won a World Cup qualifier in 33 years, showed the team’s defensive qualities, not just its attacking flair, and answered the coach’s many critics. “From the moment that Brazil manages to equal other teams in
terms of motivation and will to win, our technique will make the difference,” said Dunga, whose often sour demeanor contrasts with the traditional smiling face of Brazilian soccer. “That’s why we say that talent is not enough. Talent is extremely important, but it has to be united with other things to have any effect. History shows this. On a lot of occasions, Brazil have had players of very high quality but haven’t got the results.” Dunga, who in 1994 captained Brazil to its fourth World Cup title, has spent much of his time as national coach fighting criticism that he doesn’t pick the right team,
doesn’t play the right formations and can’t get the best out of his players. He defiantly refused to select Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, saying they were not in shape, yet stood by Adriano after the troubled striker left Inter Milan to deal with personal problems back home. None of those three will be on the squad when it arrives in South Africa on Thursday. Dunga will be relying on Robinho, Luis Fabiano, Alexandre Pato and Kaka to score at the Confed Cup. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Adriano clearly will have to play their way back onto the team if they want to come to South Africa for next year’s World Cup.

As of about noon Monday, Roger Federer hadn’t received a congratulatory call from Rafael Nadal, the man he succeeded as French Open champion. Who did touch base? Who did send along good wishes when Federer won his first title at Roland Garros to complete a career Grand Slam and tie Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slam titles? None other than Federer’s pal Tiger Woods, another man who owns 14 major championships. Yes, Woods showed up to the driving range a little later than usual Sunday before playing the final round of the Memorial. He watched Federer win in his fourth trip to the French Open final, and they chatted afterward. “I was pulling for him. I was as nervous as can be for him,” Woods said after rallying from

Good as they are, both constantly are looking for ways to improve: After recently deciding to try drop shots more often, Federer earned five winners off them against Soderling. “For a few years, there was probably three or four areas of his game that were arguably the best in the word, from movement to forehand to shot selection to net game,” said Andre Agassi, one of the other five men to have won each of tennis’ major tournaments. “He just has it all.”

Leadership training, health and life skills instruction and teen programming also are available. Children earn can “Club Bucks,” which can then be used to purchase prizes. Pizza parties, for example, cost 500 Club Bucks. “This is a lot different than I thought it would be,” Sam Scully, 12, said between swings of his right arm to simulate the motion a racket makes while playing tennis on Nintendo Wii. “It’s just different than any other summer camp. It’s hard to explain. It has other things, not just video games. They give you options.” Eight-year-old Whitney Couchoud, who strung beads of different shapes and colors onto fishing line to make a bracelet, said she was having fun because she had played games and made jewelry. “My mom said if I don’t like it here, I have to go to dad’s work, but I like it here,” she said. The Boys & Girls Club is open 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and costs $1 per hour, $10 per day or $300 for the entire summer. The city’s program costs $32 per day. Resident Jim Hansen signed up his sons, Theo, 9, and Ethan, 7, on Monday afternoon. He said they likely wouldn’t attend the club every day but on an asneeded basis. “That’s what is great about it,” he said. “You can drop them off for an hour or two to run an errand or all day if you need it. … I think it’s an absolutely wonderful thing and needed. I’m excited about it.”

A mother of 10- and 12-yearold sons, Martyn said she partly was driven to find activities for her children. “I have a passion for kids. I have passion for Steamboat,” she said. “I wanted it to be a flexible place that kids wanted to come (to).” Brown, a former City Council and School Board member, said there are great after-school and summer programs provided by the city and Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp., but they don’t offer a lot of variety. “We thought there was a gap to be filled,” Brown said. The club provides activities for children ages 6 to 18. Younger children are required to be signed in and out by parents, while chil-
dren 12 and older can come and go as they please. Martyn said a number of the middle schooland high school-aged children are volunteers or work for the club full time this summer. By comparison, the city’s program, which has been offered for about 20 years, only serves children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Susan Peterson, director of recreation services for Steamboat’s Parks, Open Space & Recreational Services Department, said the city is supportive of the Boys & Girls Club. Peterson said she’s even collaborated with Martyn to avoid duplicating programs. “Our hope is they’ll fill a niche that we haven’t been able to before,” she said, referring to programs for older youths and teens. “This town hasn’t had any real good programs for them.” So far, nearly 200 children
