face, you would never guess the harrowing ordeal from which Steamboat Springs’ city manager is emerging. Roberts returned to City Hall on Tuesday for his first full day of work, including a late Steamboat Springs City Council meeting, since his Memorial Day weekend skydiving accident in Perris, Calif. “I feel great. I’m really glad to be back part of all the action items going on back in the city,” said Roberts, who added that he still lacks strength and

endurance but is only mildly sore. Roberts said he had never spent a day in the hospital before the accident. “It just drove me crazy being in the hospital.” Roberts, an experienced skydiver with about 50 jumps under his belt, was injured when he was unable to locate the rip cord for his main and reserve parachutes. The reserve parachute eventually deployed high enough for Roberts to land safely, but

he nearly hit a building and became tangled in TV antennae above it. His parachute collapsed, and he fell about 30 feet to the ground and tore his thoracic aorta, which is a segment of the aorta — the largest blood vessel in the body that is connected to the heart and delivers oxygenated blood to all parts of the body. Too much guilt

he worms are working on it. Dozens of worms are busy turning my newly created compost pile into fertile soil for my garden. They are hard at work converting eggshells, coffee grounds and bits of bread into rich, dark, earth-smelling soil conditioner. The worms are also absolving me of a tiny bit � � � � � � � � � � � � � �� of Green Guilt. Bless me, worms, for I have � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � �� sinned. �� Last week, I made a terrible mistake. I had a tiny piece of plastic foam in my hand — about the size of a matchbook — and before you could say “Reduce, Reuse Recycle,” I pitched it into a garbage can. Threw. It. Away. Aaargh! I think I experienced a brain freeze, a senior moment, brain bugaboo or all three. Instead of dutifully carrying the plastic foam home to recycle, I absentmindedly tossed it in a garbage can. Now that piece of plastic foam is in the bottom of a large metal trash container, making its sad way to a landfill somewhere, where it will slowly biodegrade in a few months, years or eons. The Green Guilt is overwhelming. Crippling. Devastating. Going green is so important that the guilt is intensified and haunts me every minute of every day. I feel green guilty when I drive instead of riding my bike.

Joanne Palmer I feel green guilty when I forget my grocery bag in my car and am too lazy to go out and get it. I feel green guilty when I put clothes in the dryer instead of hanging them up to dry. If I dry them, I feel guilty that my washer and dryer aren’t more energy efficient. I feel green guilty if I buy an apple from Fiji. I feel green guilty if I buy a new shirt instead of rescuing one from a consignment store, garage sale or thrift shop. I feel green guilty about my gas-powered lawn mower. Shouldn’t I dig up the lawn and plant a big garden instead? I feel green guilty if I don’t reuse an envelope or both sides of printer paper before recycling it. I feel green guilty about my childhood, when we routinely punched holes in the bottom of soda cans, tossed them into Lake Michigan and watched them sink to the bottom. I do not need more guilt. I already am afflicted with an overabundance of Food Guilt, Exercise Guilt and Don’t-Walk-

The-Dog-Enough Guilt. Our garbage is under constant scrutiny. If I slip up and hold one thing in my hand mistakenly headed for the garbage, my son will shriek, “Recycle that!” And so I do. And then I haul the heavy green containers to the Big Green Recycling Machines parked around town and congratulate myself on completing a vigorous upper body workout. It’s a full-time job being green. I need to replace incandescent bulbs with florescent, switch from paper towels to rags, give up plastic storage containers for glass, wash my clothes in cold water, take shorter showers, buy in bulk, avoid aerosol containers, convert to rechargeable batteries, carry a reusable coffee mug, use cloth napkins instead of paper, pay bills online and, gasp … read online instead of reading “real” newspapers and magazines. Please, anything but that. I can do about anything except give up reading in the bathtub. Recycling experts advise people to get in the habit of asking themselves, “How can I make this moment a trash-free one?” Honestly, I don’t think I can do that quite yet. And so I will continue to live with Green Guilt — a problem for which there is no cure, no 12-step program or rehab facility. The only solution could be more worms.

Steamboat boater missing Wyoming officials have suspended search for Brian Stothart Blythe Terrell

Steamboat Springs resident Brian Stothart disappeared while boating Saturday on the Encampment River in Wyoming. He is presumed drowned, according to a news release from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office in Rawlins, Wyo. Carbon County Sheriff Jerry Colson said Stothart was in a boat with one paddle and a cockpit, which was classified as a kayak. Barry Smith, who runs the Mountain Sports Kayaking School in Steamboat, said Stothart was an avid canoeist. “It’s kind of like the telemark skiing of going down the river,” Smith said. “He would paddle an open canoe for one person.” Stothart and four others were boating in the Encampment River Canyon, Colson said. They launched from Commissary Park to travel through a section called Damnation Alley. Stothart, 35, disappeared after the other four stopped at an eddy. He missed the eddy,

tipped and then righted his kayak, Colson said. Stothart then went over a drop. His fellow boaters didn’t see any sign of him before his kayak appeared and floated away upside down, Colson said. Colson said his office received the call for help at about 5 p.m. Saturday. Cory Nuhn, a member of Upper Valley Search and Rescue, helped search for Stothart. On Saturday night, searchers walked the trail by the river, Nuhn said. Sunday, they rode horses and used an airplane and a helicopter for search efforts. About 18 people participated in the search, not including sheriff ’s deputies, Nuhn said. “In the 15 years I’ve been on search and rescue, this is the first water rescue we’ve been called on,” he said. The Encampment River Canyon runs about 15 miles from the Colorado border to the town of Encampment, Wyo., Colson said. Searchers checked the Encampment and Platte Rivers by air Tuesday morning and didn’t find Stothart, he said. The

Encampment connects with the Platte. Searchers found Stothart’s life vest and float bag about half a mile downstream from where he was last seen. Colson said his office would suspend the search until the Encampment River receded. “That could take two or three weeks,” Colson said. “That water’s running high and fast.” By about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, the river was flowing at 1,270 cubic feet per second at its mouth near Encampment, Wyo. The Yampa River, by comparison, was flowing at 1,480 cubic feet per second through downtown Steamboat Springs. Smith said Stothart was a nice, good-looking guy and a skilled canoeist. “He’s quite talented,” Smith said. “He was good; he could roll the canoe.” Stothart was married and had children, Smith said. “I just saw him the other night when he was teaching a rolling class. … I saw him in the pool and talked to him a little bit,” Smith said. “That was the last time I saw him.”

The location of light industrial uses, including an industrial substation, was the primary item of contention among developers, residents and the Steamboat Springs City Council as the latter continued their review of the proposed Steamboat 700 master-planned community at a meeting Tuesday. Steamboat 700’s proposal is to cluster light industrial and public facilities such as a fire station, an electric substation and yards and garages for the city’s public works and parks departments and the Steamboat 700 homeowners association on a parcel in the southwest corner of the project. That proposal has spurred a backlash from residents in Silver Spur because the campus would

Routt County Search and Rescue volunteers spent Saturday hiking to Upper Fish Creek Falls and setting up a sophisticated rope system to rescue Kade. They spent much of the remainder of the weekend and Monday searching for his mom. Most Routt County Search and Rescue members say they give their time as a way of giving back to the community they cherish. Truth is, most of us probably take for granted the commitment and sacrifice each volunteer makes to help those in need. Routt County Search and Rescue is an independent, nonprofit corporation with zero paid staffers. Volunteers spend a minimum of six months completing the requisite training to become a Search

and Rescue member. Once a member, all Search and Rescue volunteers are required to attend 50 percent of the ongoing, twice-monthly training exercises, and respond to a minimum of 25 percent of the missions. There are between 50 and 80 missions during a typical year. Search and Rescue’s Ropes Team has an additional two trainings a month. Missions run the gamut from urban searches for missing children to helping law enforcement agencies locate individuals threatening suicide. More often, they involve lost or injured snowmobilers, skiers, hunters and hikers. Too often, they involve missing aircraft. “If you can’t drive a fire truck or ambulance to it, we’re the ones who take care of it,” Search and Rescue President Russ Sanford said. Routt County Search and Rescue relies on funding from the city and county, as well as private donations and Department of Local Affairs grants to cover its approximately $80,000 annual operating budget. And that funding is far from stable. The city of Steamboat Springs, which classifies Search and Rescue funding as part of its “community support” budget, slashed the group’s 2009 allocation by 54 percent during previous years — from $43,500 to less than $20,000. Private donations also are iffy during lean economic times, and Search and Rescue members hope their annual fundraiser scheduled for September won’t experience a decline. The organization always is in need of new equipment, and it takes money to provide it. There are things we can do to help ensure the future success of Routt County Search and Rescue.

First, the Steamboat Springs City Council should reclassify Search and Rescue funding as something other than “community support.” Rescuing our friends, family, co-workers and visitors is never an option, and fully funding the volunteer group that does the rescuing shouldn’t be either. Second, all residents and visitors should spend the $3 a year for a CORSAR card. Search and rescue organizations such as Routt County’s can get reimbursed by the state for the expense of a mission if the subject of the search or rescue is a CORSAR cardholder. Purchase one at Steamboat’s Colorado Division of Wildlife office. Nonetheless, it’s important to point out that Search and Rescue never charges individuals for expenses incurred on a mission. Third, consider attending Search and Rescue’s annual fundraiser, preliminarily scheduled for Sept. 11. The event typically raises $10,000 to $15,000. Stronger community support of this event should allow it to raise even more. Search and Rescue also accepts individual donations. Send one to P.O. Box 772837, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477. Finally, consider becoming a Search and Rescue volunteer. It’s a significant time commitment, but try finding a current member who won’t vouch for its worthiness. Applications are available at www. routtcountysar.org, but the group only does one recruiting class per year, typically in the fall. Completed applications can be mailed to the address above. Recent missions have raised awareness of Routt County Search and Rescue and should inspire community members to support this vital organization.

get their names, but one couple helped with phone contact, and a young man tried to see if he could diagnose our mechanical problems. Although there was little they could do to get us on our way, their willingness to stop when others were flying by at unnerving speeds was reassuring, and they left us after summoning a tow truck. Then came the kind Colorado State Patrol trooper who followed up for assistance while placing his car in a position to prevent us from being hit. Once he confirmed the tow truck was on its way, he could have gone on to other responsibilities, but he chose to stay with two bedraggled senior citizens until we were safely in the truck and our bike tied securely to the flatbed. Justin from American Towing showed exceptional concern with the handling of our trike. Once he towed us into Steamboat Springs, he made sure we got to a bus stop with all of our gear and headed

in the right direction to the Village at Steamboat at the east end of town. Then came Geno, the bus driver who handed us off to Toni to take us the rest of the way. Both of these drivers did everything they could to help us get to our destination. At the Village at Steamboat, we were welcomed and given assistance to the utmost degree. Our daughter had called ahead to advise them of our breakdown and our late check-in. The staff was waiting to help us. Peg Huntley even made room in her personal vehicle to take us to our unit and loaded our gear on the luggage cart. Everyone was willing to help us locate any of the businesses in town we needed and recommended many great places that we tried during the next three days. Alan Koermer, assistant resort manager, made sure our every concern was resolved. The biggest fear of breaking down in an unfamiliar town is dealing with the service personnel who work on your vehicle. Travis King, the service manager at Steamboat Powersports,

treated us like longtime loyal customers. He had the problem diagnosed, the part ordered and gave us regular progress updates during the next two days. Right from the beginning, we felt like we were dealing with a friend. Everywhere we went, we found helpful and kind people. We wish we knew more of their names, but the strangers on the road, the helpful patrolman, Justin, Geno, Toni, the Village at Steamboat staff, Peg Huntley, Alan Koermer, Travis King, and the waitresses and clerks in the stores all represented Steamboat Springs in grand style. We have never been so well taken care of under similar circumstances in other towns. No one likes to be on a road trip and have your vehicle break down. However, when it happens in Steamboat Springs, one gets the opportunity to create pleasant memories of good people helping others.

The Hayden School Board will decide whether to adopt the school district’s 200910 budget during its regular meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. today. Board members approved the more than $5 million budget in May. If adopted, it would be submitted to the Colorado Department of Education by Dec. 31. tion of wrestling coach Ty Zabel. Zabel was approved as the district’s new activities director last month. He replaces Michael Luppes, the former superintendent, who retired from that post after the 2007-08 school year. The board is scheduled to accept resignations of certified staff. Hayden resident Delanie VeDepo had skied past the laboratory on the summit of Storm Peak, but she’d never been inside. VeDepo was an invited guest of Atmospheric Science Collaborations and Enriching NeTworks program Tuesday. Part of the event was a tour of the lab for women in atmospheric science from across the country, and as far as Denmark. ASCENT began Sunday evening with an informal gathering and continues through today. The event offered women in atmospheric science a chance to interact socially and professionally, said Gannet Hallar, director of Storm Peak Laboratory. She said that would hopefully foster relationships that could lead to future collaborations. Hallar was awarded a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to host the event for three years at Storm Peak Laboratory. Hallar thought that if some of the world’s top atmospheric scientists were wandering Steamboat, and area high school students were interested, why not invite them, she said. That’s where VeDepo, a

Economy Affects Youth Sports Tournaments Drought, grasshoppers and fires can’t hold a candle to current economy

Many remember when there were two front-page stories running in the Rocky Mountain News in one summer, neither of which were ones to hang in the public relations hall of fame. Headlines such as “Grasshoppers Invade Steamboat” and “Steamboat Surrounded by Fires” were enough to keep some of the most courageous guests from crossing the Continental Divide. However, thankfully, the impact to Triple Crown Sports teams was negligible. Until this year, everyone thought sports teams were a very stable bet, an “orphan and widow” stock for this town. “In all the years that I’ve been working in the organized sports industry, I haven’t seen anything like what’s happening in this economy right now,” Triple Crown Sports Owner Dave King said. “We’ve weathered prior recessions, drought, grasshoppers and wildfires and continued to grow our business. This is really something new, and it’s so tough to know how to react. We are doing everything we can to fill our events across the nation and in Steamboat Springs, but I anticipate that we will be down anywhere from 5 to 25 percent on our Colorado events.” In team sports, a few team members can influence the decision to travel to a tournament. With unemployment increasing, there are many teams that are consolidating with others in their areas to make up for those members that can’t afford to travel this year. Another phenomenon is that new teams are not forming in the younger age brackets, and the older teams also are decreasing. The result is fewer

As of early June, the Triple Crown World Series is anticipating a 20 to 25 percent decrease in teams, or about 40 teams less than last year for the three weeks of play in July and August based on current registrations. However, there are some teams that have registered and paid for the tournament that still have not booked their lodging. The recent Triple Crown Sports tournament in Omaha, which ended up with a slight increase in teams from last year, saw 25 percent of the teams booking their lodging within 30 days of the actual tournament. “That’s a very difficult situation to manage,” King noted. “Trying to anticipate the amount of employees, team lineups, inventory of memorabilia and umpires has made for incredible last-minute pressure on the TCS staff.” All 30 of the states that host Triple Crown Sports events are equally affected, from large city events to destination resorts. Most of the franchises and Triple Crown’s key competitors are experiencing the same downturn in numbers of participating teams. So, Steamboat Springs is

definitely not alone.

What can be done? Discussions are being held among lodging properties, marketing professionals and sports tournament providers to see whether there are some strategies that might move the needle for the World Series in July and August. An option is to wait and hope for the last-minute booking pattern that occurred in Omaha. However, there might be some proactive measures that could be effective if all the partners are willing. Central Reservations saw good results in the winter with a close-in cancellation policy, Paula Sears said. This might be a good strategy to look at again for any special offers this summer. Regardless of what is done

this year, the Chamber will begin to work with all partners on next year’s plans. Consolidating age groupings for the World Series and the possibility of bringing back a 4th of July softball tournament will be up for consideration until economic impacts lessen. This is a recession that hit the sports industry, and 2010 is expected to be affected, as well.

The friendliness factor Welcoming the teams that come to town this year is going to be especially important. A few weeks ago, Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder was pitching her new play, “The Bone Orchard,” as “a sweet love story about death.” Two days into rehearsals at the Perry-Mansfield New Works Festival, that theme stayed strong. But “The Bone Orchard” originally focused on a girl who wanted to die a virgin martyr until she met the boy who would dig her grave. Now, the boy is the main character. “It’s become clear that this story is really more about the boy and his journey and how, through her death, he learns how to live his life,” Wilder said, taking a break from rehearsals early Tuesday afternoon. At 8 p.m. Friday, a fourperson cast from the Denver Center Theatre Company will give a staged reading of “The Bone Orchard.” It will be one of four initial presentations at the New Works Festival. On Monday, Wilder heard her script for the first time. And on Monday night, she rewrote a good chunk of it. “This play is brand new, and yesterday was really the first

Hayden leaders joined forces Tuesday evening to discuss the best way to revitalize the town. The centerpiece of their discussion was a report from the Community Revitalization Partnership. Members of Hayden’s Chamber of Commerce and Planning Commission bellied up to the table with the Hayden Economic Development Commission to review the report and any changes they wanted to see in it. The study was done April 13 and 14. It was a joint effort of the town, the EDC, the Chamber and the state Department of Local Affairs. Chamber member Donna Hellyer wanted to focus first on some of the progress that wasn’t mentioned in the report. For example, the Chamber has added flower baskets downtown and plans to put up banners. A group of four diverse people shared their culture and language Tuesday night at the Boys & Girls Club of Craig during a group meeting called Intercambio. The word, when translated, means exchange. “We analyze every little thing because there are so many possibilities,” said Ray Parfrey, of Craig, when talking about translating a popular Spanish song. Tuesday was Parfrey’s third week participating at Intercambio. Intercambio is a weekly event

organized by Integrated Community, a nonprofit organization that seeks to bridge the gap between the immigrant community and the receiving community through various services. Intercambio is open to anyone who wishes to join in the group’s mission while learning one another’s languages and having fun. Intercambio has been around almost five years, as long as Integrated Community. For Parfrey, it was curiosity that first led him to be interested in learning the Spanish language. Bear enters Granby-area house, eats pet’s food Drew Munro

A Granby-area family endured an unwanted dinner guest for about 10 minutes Sunday night when a bear entered their mud room through a dog door. “Our dog made a strange noise — a combination between a growl and a bark,” Brenda Freeman said. When her husband went to see what was wrong and opened the mudroom door, “there was a bear two feet away from him,”

she said. The startled couple shut and locked the mudroom door and went into their kitchen, where they could look through the window into the mudroom window. It was about 10:30 p.m. The bear explored the mudroom for 10 minutes, Freeman said. He did little damage but left paw prints on the window, ate all the dog food that was out and pulled a few herbs growing in pots out of the soil, she said. “He was very graceful, very calm,” she said. “The bear didn’t

seem to care about the dog barking.” She said the couple has lived in their home about five miles from Granby off U.S. Highway 34 for seven years and never had any bear issues. However, about four years ago, a mountain lion came close to the house, she said. That incident eventually prompted the Freemans to add a dog to the family. Aniden is a Turkish Kangal, a breed used to protect sheep from wolves. The 2-year-old dog — whose name is

Turkish for “pounce” — weighs about 120 pounds, Brenda said. She said her husband told her the bear looked like the same one authorities treed for a short time in Granby’s Kaibab Park on Thursday. “We thought it was quite a coincidence,” she said.

Blame the rain The two incidents may be weather-related, at least indirectly. “It has to do with kind of the timing of Mother Nature,” said

Randy Hampton, Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman. This time of year, bears generally eat grubs and forbs and by now are gorging on berries. The problem, he said, is that the same rain making the high country look like a Pebble Beach fairway also is prolonging the flowering phase of berry bushes. So, the berries are not yet available and the bears may be seeking alternative food sources, he said.

Steamboat 700 Principal and Project Manager Danny Mulcahy said he understood the Silver Spur residents’ concerns and apologized for not communicating his intentions with them better. However, Mulcahy also rejected some alternative proposals for relocating the light

industrial area closer to any of his proposed mixed-use “village centers.” “I don’t want yard spaces in the middle of my high-density village center,” Mulcahy said. “At the end of the day, it’s about community and impacting the least amount of people possible.” Musselman countered that Steamboat 700 residents at least would purchase their homes with knowledge of the substation’s location.

Council members Meg Bentley and Jon Quinn sympathized with the Silver Spur residents. Councilman Steve Ivancie sought assurances that Mulcahy was willing to consider alternate locations and possibly spreading the facilities across the development. Council took no formal action on the matter, which ended with Mulcahy’s promise to meet with the residents of Silver Spur and Steamboat II.

Also Tuesday, council rejected a number of requirements proposed by the Steamboat Springs Planning Commission that would have required a number of sustainability and energy efficiency measures of Steamboat 700 such as carbon neutrality. Council members said they thought development already was trending greener naturally and that any additional green building regulations should be imposed citywide.

More signs of a weak economy gave investors a reason to sell stocks for a second day. Stocks extended their pullback Tuesday after news of a seventh straight monthly drop in industrial production overshadowed better-than-expected reports on home construction, building permits and inflation. All the major stock indexes fell more than 1 percent, and

the Dow Jones industrial average lost 107 points, bringing its two-day drop to nearly 300 points, or 3.3 percent. Investors are nervous that a three-month surge in stocks, based on optimism about a recovering economy, might have been premature. But analysts weren’t surprised that investors were having second thoughts. “It’s unreasonable to think that the market is going to go straight up and never turn back,” said Eric Ross, direc-

tor of research at Canaccord Adams. Analysts say investors need more clear evidence of growth to restart the market’s rally, which has stalled as investors grow worried that a weaker dollar, higher commodities prices and increasing interest rates will hamper the economy’s recovery. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is still up 34.8 percent from the 12year lows it hit in March. “You’ve got to continue to have a constant flow of good news to push things higher,”

said Randy Frederick, director of trading at Charles Schwab. “And we just don’t have that.” The Dow Jones industrial average declined 107.46, or 1.2 percent, to 8,504.67. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index declined 11.75, or 1.3 percent, to 911.97, while the Nasdaq composite index declined 20.20, or 1.1 percent, to 1,796.18. On Monday, the Dow tumbled 187 points, or 2.1 percent, putting it back into the red for 2009. Last week, the Dow was up on the year for the first time

since January. A stronger dollar sent commodities prices tumbling Monday, and that put pressure on energy and material stocks. The dollar resumed its threemonth fall against other major currencies Tuesday, pushing prices for commodities higher. Analysts contend a pause in the rally is necessary for stocks to move higher. Market watchers tend to be alarmed when the market moves up in an unbroken line and say that suggests indiscriminate buying.

Childhood poverty in Colorado is worsening, continuing a downward spiral that began last year, a new report says. Colorado had an 85 percent increase in the number of children living in poverty between 2000 and 2007, one of the biggest jumps in the nation, according to the report released Tuesday by the Colorado Children’s Campaign. The new president of the Colorado Senate is defending his decision to spend $4,300 in state money on a team-building retreat for Democratic lawmakers, calling it a “minimal investment” in professional development. But president Brandon Shaffer said he made a mistake by excluding Republican lawmakers from the two-day retreat.

He said he organized the retreat partly because of complaints about committee chairs being disrespectful to the public and other lawmakers. All committee chairs are Democrats since the party controls the Senate as well as the House. “I thought it would be beneficial if we were in an environment where we were going to air dirty laundry to keep that in-house,” said Shaffer, D-Longmont. The retreat was reported in The Denver Post on Tuesday.

Colorado man in court on fatal child abuse charge

when Thompson reported her missing in November 2005. Authorities say Aarone may have died as early as 2003, but her body has not been found. The indictment alleges that Aarone was buried in a field and that Thompson and his girlfriend, Shely Lowe, concealed her death. Lowe, who died in May 2006 from heart problems, also was named in the indictment. Thompson, who is being held on $500,000 bond, faces as many as 54 years in prison if convicted on all counts. In court Tuesday, he wore an orange jail jumpsuit as he sat at a table with his attorneys and flipped through pages of investigative transcripts. The indictment alleges that Aarone grew up in a brutal household and that she and seven other children were beaten with a baseball bat, belts, cords, magazines and a broomstick. The indictment also alleges that Aarone was malnourished and was not given proper medical care. Police say one child at the home told them Aarone

was locked in a closet for hours as punishment for wetting herself.

Judge denies request to drop priest abuse lawsuit PUEBLO

A judge has denied a request to dismiss a lawsuit against the Catholic Diocese of Pueblo filed by a man who alleges a priest sexually abused him. The diocese argued the man waited too long to sue. Pueblo County District Judge Victor Reyes ruled Monday the suit was filed within the two-year time window. Reyes says the window didn’t begin until the man first suspected the diocese was negligent and that there were other victims. Church officials didn’t return a call. The suit, filed by a Colorado prison inmate identified as John Doe No. 7, alleges church officials knew the priest was a threat to children but didn’t act. The priest identified in the suit, Andrew Burke, left the clergy in the 1970s and committed suicide in 2005.

Fort Collins officials are trying to figure out why a new emergency alert system failed to notify residents about a tornado warning. An alert should have gone out to about 100,000 phone numbers and e-mail addresses Monday but didn’t. It may have been a good time for a breakdown. The National Weather Service said Tuesday that what was reported as a tornado 5 miles southwest of the city may have been just rotating clouds picked up by radar. County officials say the system was developed by Everbridge, the same company that successfully sent out alerts in the city of Aurora and in Morgan County around the same time. Larimer County agencies paid $150,000 to start the system in September and then paid an annual fee of $95,000 to be able to send out an unlimited number of alerts. The system has been used successfully 18 times in Larimer County. Monday’s message would have been the first weather-related alert. The Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Larimer County based on what was reported at the time as a sighting by a spotter. But Carl Burroughs of the National Weather Service said there’s nothing else in the agency’s records to back up that report, not even reports of funnel clouds. The warning came on another busy severe weather day in Colorado, leading Burroughs to think that the tornado may have been wrongly attributed to a spotter rather than radar in the rush to process information. He said radar can pick up cloud rotations though it can’t actually see a tornado. He said conditions still warranted a warning.

When Shannon Miller runs a hockey camp, it goes far beyond the X’s and O’s of the game. Sure, there are plenty of onice moments, but after a closer look, it’s easier to understand why Miller — one of the most respected figures in women’s hockey — runs her camps the way she does. “The one thing I’ve noticed for women’s hockey changing, is the women have become better athletes,” Miller said. “When I coached Team Canada for

the first time in 1991, they were good hockey players but not good athletes. Ten years later, they’re all good athletes. You want the same effect to go through to the grass-roots level.” So while the 46 girls, ages 9 to 16, attending this week’s Shannon Miller Hockey Camp at Howelsen Ice Arena will no doubt leave with better on-ice skills, Miller said she hopes they’ll also take away a lot more. In addition to skating and playing, the girls work on the mental side of the game, as well as learning about dryland training.

“Why wait until you’re 15 or 16 to start becoming a good athlete and learning about good nutrition, the mental side and dryland training?” Miller said. “Why not start when you’re 9, 10 or 11 years old so it’s second nature when you’re 15 or 16?” Miller might be the best person to teach young girls about the game. The veteran coach has helped lead the University of Minnesota-Duluth women’s hockey team to four Division I national championships in nine years as a coach. She coached Team Canada for seven years, including winning a silver medal at the 1998

Winter Olympic Games. Miller’s knowledge of the game has players from across the region coming to Steamboat for the camp. In addition to a plethora of local players, skaters from all across Colorado descended on Howelsen Ice Arena to attend what many said is the best hockey camp in the area. “It’s the best hockey camp we knew of,” said Marisa Danos, a 13-year-old who traveled up from Gunnison for the four-day camp. “I learn stuff I’ve never learned before and improve on See Hocky, page 31

But he also knows that Olympians are regular people. So in conjunction with running the Winter Sports Club’s summer conditioning camp, Worrell is bringing the young athletes to a unique event. Members of the Alpine team will have breakfast at Johnny

Tiger Woods began his final practice round of the U.S. Open by hitting a 5-wood for his second shot on a par 4, which is rare for someone with his power. Stranger still was that it wasn’t enough club to reach the 10th green. The stubborn side of the defending champion showed up on the 15th fairway at Woods Bethpage Black. Staring toward the elevated green, he backed off his shot and turned to his caddie as if to change clubs, then decided to stick with the 4-iron already in his hands. Woods hit it pure, and when the ball barely reached the green, he laughed.

The scorecard at Bethpage Black shows an additional 212 yards from 2002, when Woods was the only player to finish under par and won the U.S. Open by three shots to beat Phil Mickelson. With soggy turf and rain part of every forecast, the Black feels even longer. “This is probably the most difficult golf course we’ve faced from tee to green,” Woods said Tuesday. “Obviously, it’s not the green complexes this week — certainly not Oakmont, or it’s not Winged Foot. But from tee to green, this golf course is all you want. With the weather coming in here this week, it’s only going to get longer and harder. And it’s going to be even more difficult.” And that could be right up

That’s why, Miller said, when she was given the opportunity to do a camp in Steamboat, she jumped at the chance. “I always had to travel to play hockey,” she said. “These kids travel all winter, so I think it’s important to bring some experienced instructors to them.” Most of the girls at the camp said they’d love to play college hockey. Although Miller hoped
