Organiz ed VIDEO by Routt CounONLINE ty Riders and www.steamboatpilot.com supported by a number of local businesses, the Bike to Work Day initiative drew together the serious riders and the casual cruisers from around Steamboat Springs. Routt County Riders Vice President Lisa Shafer said the annual breakfast expanded this year as the number of bicyclists on the roads grew all across town. Shafer said there were close to 200 people who attended the breakfast on the lawn. Rich Hager, a rider who works at BAP and Honey Stinger, said the event is intended to bring “racers and noncompetitive riders together” for social time. Katie Gaylord, who ate breakfast on the courthouse lawn with her daughter, Rachel Nelson, said she was one of the noncompetitive riders drawn to the event for the first time this year. “I’m not what they call an avid biker; I’m a cruiser bike See Bike, page 12

The criminal case against one of the men charged in connection with the January fight that led to the death of Sgt. 1st Class Richard Lopez was delayed Wednesday after the man’s Steamboat Springs attorney, Charles Feldmann, said more time was needed for discovery. David Capote has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor third-degree assault for his alleged role in the Jan. 2 altercation at Seventh Street and Lincoln Avenue in downtown Steamboat. Capote is not implicated in Lopez’s death but rather for his suspected role in fighting with Lopez’s two friends. During Wednesday’s hearing in Routt County Court, Judge James Garrecht said he was inclined to enter a plea of not guilty for Capote and proceed with the case. But after speaking with 14th Judicial District Attorney Elizabeth Oldham and Feldmann, Garrecht agreed to continue the case until 2 p.m. July 14. David Capote and his family traveled from their home in Miami to attend Wednesday’s hearing. Oldham said a jury trial for the third-degree assault charges against David Capote could last five days, and Feldmann agreed that the trial would take longer than usual for a misdemeanor case because of jury selection. The judge and attorneys also discussed Wednesday the pos-

Frontier Airlines is scooting its animal-adorned tail out of the Yampa Valley after its first ski season here. Frontier won’t fly to Yampa Valley Regional Airport this winter, spokesman Steve Snyder confirmed Wednesday. Snyder said Frontier could return for future ski seasons. The Denverbased airline, which is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, added flights from Denver to the Hayden airport last season. “This particular year there are a couple factors at work,” Snyder said. “First, the market didn’t really perform like we were hoping for, expecting for, last year, and we only have a limited number of aircraft, and we think there are some better opportunities for them.” The airline flew to YVRA from December to April using Bombardier Q400 aircraft operated by Lynx Aviation. On Monday, Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings announced that it planned to buy Frontier. Frontier and Lynx would become wholly owned subsidiaries of Republic. Andy Wirth, Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp.’s senior vice president of marketing, and other Ski Corp. officials work with airlines to schedule flights each season. The resort and local businesses pay to guarantee a certain amount of revenue to airlines that fly to YVRA. Frontier wasn’t part of that program. Passenger numbers were down overall at YVRA in 2008-

09. December through March deplanements, or arriving passengers, decreased 14.7 percent compared with the same period in 2007-08. December through March enplanements, or departing passengers, decreased 12.5 percent. Wirth said 2009-10 flight capacity is 12 percent less than in 2008-09. That’s compared with flights loaded in June 2008 and doesn’t necessarily account for adjustments airlines made during the season, Wirth said. It also doesn’t include last year’s Frontier seats. YVRA expects to see about 139,000 round-trip seats this year, compared with about 158,000 last year. Those numbers are comparable to the 200304 and 2004-05 seasons, Wirth said. They’re higher than 200506 numbers.

“We recognize this is a step backward, but we think it’s prudent,” Wirth said. American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines and United Airlines flew to YVRA in 200809. Those airlines are scheduled to return. Delta acquired Northwest last year. Ski season flights will come in from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, Salt Lake City and Newark, N.J. “We think it’s very ample capacity to maintain Steamboat’s accessibility,” Wirth said. Last year, airfares spiked during the key booking season because of soaring oil and jet fuel prices. They later dipped along with the economy. This year, Wirth has said he expects fares to be more reasonable. A spot check shows that a round-trip American Airlines ticket from Chicago to Hayden

Debbie Curd wants to promote prevention and early detection, but she thinks money should not get in the way. The Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project has been helping women of Moffat and Routt counties to cover expenses related to breast cancer since 2000. Curd, the founder and committee chair of the organization, started the program after losing a close friend to breast cancer at the age of 40. “I saw all the expenses she incurred, so I decided to start this program to help women with those costs,” Curd said. “Given the community, there are a number of women who have no insurance or who have minimal coverage. Our whole goal is prevention.” Toward that end, Curd’s organization raises money to provide year-round help to local women to make sure they get mammograms, proper exams and treatment if cancer is diagnosed.
Curd started the project nine years ago by putting out boxes for donations and selling handmade pink lapel ribbons. Today, the organization’s annual fundraisers raise thousands of dollars, which help more than 100 women in the area. The main fundraiser in the fall, The Bust of Steamboat, is an auction of works donated by local artists. The only requirement for an artistic donation is that a bra or a bust be incorporated into the work. Another major fundraiser, Steamboat’s Rally for a Cure, is a golf tournament that divides 100 percent of the proceeds between the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project and the Susan G. Komen foundation. All the money raised by the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project goes directly to women of Moffat and Routt counties. Everyone involved with the organization works as a volunteer, so there are no administrative costs. The organization has helped women with and without insur-

COMMENTARY
Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?
Something for nothing David Brooks
THE NEW YORK TIMES
On May 12, the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing about health care reform. There was a long table of 13 experts, and the vast majority agreed that ending the tax exemption on employerprovided health benefits should be part of a reform package. They gave the reasons that experts — on the right or left — always give for supporting this idea. The exemption is a giant Brooks subsidy to the affluent. It drives up health care costs by encouraging luxurious plans and by separating people from the consequences of their decisions. Furthermore, repealing the exemption could raise hundreds of billions of dollars, which could be used to expand coverage to the uninsured. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden piped
up and noted that he and Republican Sen. Robert Bennett have a plan that repeals the exemption and provides universal coverage. The Wyden-Bennett bill has 14 bipartisan co-sponsors and the Congressional Budget Office has found that it would be revenue neutral. Committee Chairman Max Baucus looked exasperated. With that haughty and peremptory manner that they teach you in Committee Chairman School, he told Wyden and the world that this idea was not going to happen. In the World’s Greatest Deliberative Body, senators don’t run things. Chairmen and their staffs run things. During the spring, as the Obama administration faded to invisibility, the Finance and Health Committees separately put together plans. These plans did not alter the employer exemption. They did build on the current system. They did include approaches that have been around since Richard Nixon.
The problem with the committee plans is that they don’t do much to change the underlying incentives and consequently don’t do much to control costs. “The single most expensive option is to build on the existing system,” says health care costs guru John Sheils, of the Lewin Group. The CBO measured the plans and the results were devastating. A successful plan has to be revenue neutral for the government in the next 10 years and it has to reduce the total health care burden in the long term so the country doesn’t go bankrupt. The Senate committee plans failed both criteria. They would cost the government more than $1 trillion this decade and send costs zooming by as much as 6.7 percent a year long-term. The CBO reports sent shockwaves through Washington. Senators and staffs began casting about for a way to get a good CBO score. President Barack Obama redoubled his rhetoric about funSee Brooks, page 9
The green revolution(s) Thomas L. Friedman THE NEW YORK TIMES
There has been a lot of worthless chatter about what President Barack Obama should say about Iran’s incipient “Green Revolution.” Sorry, but Iranian reformers don’t need our praise. They need the one thing we could do, without firing a shot, that would truly weaken the Iranian theocrats and force them to unshackle their people. What’s that? End our addiction to the oil that funds Iran’s Islamic Friedman dictatorship. Launching a real Green Revolution in America would be the best way to support the “Green Revolution” in Iran. Oil is the magic potion that enables Iran’s turbaned shahs — “Shah Khamenei” and “Shah Ahmadinejad” — to snub their noses at the world and
MALLARD FILLMORE
at many of their own people, as well. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad behaves like someone who was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple. By coincidence, he’s been president of Iran during a period of record high oil prices. So, although he presides over an economy that makes nothing the world wants, he can lecture us about how the West is in decline and the Holocaust was a “myth.” Trust me, at $25 a barrel, he won’t be declaring that the Holocaust was a myth anymore. The Obama team wants to pursue talks with Iran about its nuclear program, no matter who wins there. Fine. But the issue is not talk or no talk. The issue is leverage or no leverage. I love talking to people — especially in the Middle East — on one condition: that we have the leverage. As long as oil prices are high, Iran will have too much leverage and will be able to resist concessions on its nuclear program. With oil at $70 a barrel, our economic
sanctions on Iran are an annoyance; at $25, they really hurt. “People do not change when you tell them they should; they change when they tell themselves they must,” observed Michael Mandelbaum, the Johns Hopkins University foreign policy specialist. And nothing would tell Iran’s leaders that they must change more than collapsing oil prices. Obama has already started some excellent energy-saving initiatives. But we need more. Imposing an immediate “Freedom Tax” of $1 a gallon on gasoline — with rebates to the poor and elderly — would be a triple positive: It would stimulate more investment in renewable energy now, it would stimulate more consumer demand for the energy-efficient vehicles that the reborn General Motors and Chrysler are supposed to make, and it would reduce our oil imports in a way See Friedman, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

Country is careening toward fiscal ruin got a reform process that is trying to evade it. This would be bad enough in normal times. But the country already is careening toward fiscal ruin. We’ve already passed a nearly $800 billion stimulus package. The public debt is already projected to double in the next ten years. Health care reform is important, but it is not worth bankrupting the country over. If this process goes as it has been going — with grand rhetoric and superficial cost containment — then we will be far better off killing this effort and starting over in a few years. Maybe then there will be leaders willing to look at the options staring them in the face.
Let’s get serious about a green revolution Friedman continued from 8 that would surely affect the global price and weaken every petro-dictator. That is how — as Bill Maher likes to say — we make the bad guys “fight all of us.” Sure, it would take time to influence the regime, but, unlike words alone, it will have an impact. I believe in “The First Law of Petro-Politics,” which stipulates that the price of oil and the pace of freedom in petrolist states — states totally dependent on oil exports to run their economies — operate in an inverse correlation. As the price of oil goes down, the pace of freedom goes up because leaders have to educate and unleash their people to innovate and trade. As the price of oil goes up, the pace of freedom goes down because leaders just have to stick a pipe in the ground to stay in power. Exhibit A: the Soviet Union. High oil prices in the 1970s suckered the Kremlin into propping up inefficient industries, over-
extending subsidies, postponing real economic reforms and invading Afghanistan. When oil prices collapsed to $15 a barrel in the late 1980s, the overextended, petrified Soviet Empire went bust. In a 2006 speech entitled “The Collapse of an Empire: Lessons for Modern Russia,” Yegor Gaidar, a deputy prime minister of Russia in the early 1990s, noted that “the timeline of the collapse of the Soviet Union can be traced to Sept. 13, 1985. On this date, Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, the minister of oil of Saudi Arabia, declared that the monarchy had decided to alter its oil policy radically. The Saudis stopped protecting oil prices, and Saudi Arabia quickly regained its share in the world market. “During the next six months,” added Gaidar, “oil production in Saudi Arabia increased fourfold, while oil prices collapsed by approximately the same amount in real terms. As a result, the Soviet Union lost about $20 bil-
lion per year, money without which the country simply could not survive.” If we could bring down the price of oil, the Islamic Republic — which has been buying off its people with subsidies and jobs for years — would face the same pressures. The ayatollahs would either have to start taking subsidies away from Iranians, which would only make the turbaned-shahs more unpopular, or empower Iran’s human talent — men and women — and give them free access to the learning, science, trade and collaboration with the rest of the world that would enable this once great Persian civilization to thrive without oil. Let’s get serious: An American Green Revolution to end our oil addiction — to parallel Iran’s Green Revolution to end its theocracy — helps us, helps them and raises the odds that whoever wins the contest for power there will have to be a reformer. What are we waiting for?

damentally reducing health care costs. Everybody continued looking around for a compromise that could get 70 votes. Now, you might think that in these circumstances, someone might take a second look at the ideas incorporated in the WydenBennett plan, which already has a good CBO score, bipartisan support and a recipe for fundamental reform. If you did think that, you are mistaking the Senate for a rational organism. For while there are brewing efforts to incorporate the Wyden-Bennett ideas, there is stiff resistance to the aspects that fundamentally change incentives. The committee staffs don’t
like the approach because it’s not what they’ve been thinking about all these years. The left is uncomfortable with the language of choice and competition. Unions want to protect the benefits packages in their contracts. Campaign consultants are horrified at the thought of fiddling with a popular special privilege. But there is almost nothing that gets to the core of the problem. Under the leading approaches, health care providers would still have powerful incentives to provide more services and use more expensive technology. We’ve built an entire health care system (maybe an entire government) on the illusion of something for nothing. Instead of tackling that basic logic, we’ve

Mountain Adventure Property Investments was a partnership of 4-S Development, Grassy Creek Holding Co., Oregon-based Robinson and Sons and FSB Bancorp., of Oklahoma. Local developers Ron Sills and Roger Johnson run 4-S and Grassy Creek, respectively. They couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday. 4-S filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and Grassy Creek is in Chapter 7. Johnson previously denied that Robinson deserved more payment. Moisan said 4-S Development recently changed its tune. “They wanted us to vote for their reorganization plan, and we wouldn’t do it till they agreed they actually owed us the money,” he said. 4-S stipulated that it owed Robinson but hasn’t paid any money, Moisan said.

Wirth attributed Frontier’s challenges partly to its late entry into the Steamboat market last year and to its having too much capacity. Frontier started with three daily Denver flights. Airport Manager Dave Ruppel said he appreciated Fron-
tier’s presence. “We enjoyed having the additional service up here,” he said. “I think it was a challenge for them competing with the ones that had been here.” Snyder said Frontier would continue flights to destinations including Aspen, Colorado Springs and Durango. The company will discontinue its Grand Junction flights, he said. Snyder wasn’t able to say how the acquisition by Republic might affect routes.

will pay for repairs at Lake Village. Money for legal fees and work has come from a $502,000 letter of credit developers received for the project. Robinson, which is not affiliated with RN Robinson & Son, of Hayden, will obtain another warranty bond to ensure that work is done to inspector specifications. Martin said Tuesday that he was pleased with the agreement with Robinson. Lake Village was meant to be part of a 1,040-acre project called the Villages at Hayden. Developers planned 86 singlefamily residences and six townhomes on the 40 acres off Routt County Road 53 in southern Hayden. Instead, it consists only of five empty model homes and an unused playground. The work Robinson will do includes repairing a sagging sewer line, adding street signs, landscaping at the park and installing sidewalk ramps,
Moisan said. “It’s just detail items that never got completed because we never came back to the project,” he said. He expects the work to be finished in 45 to 60 days. Some work will remain for whoever takes over the subdivision. Lake Village is in the control of Glen Anstine, the Chapter 7 trustee handling the Mountain Adventure Property Investments bankruptcy from Denver. Anstine’s job is to sell whatever assets he can and pay creditors. For months, Robinson Construction has said Mountain Adventure Property Investments owes it money. The company never paid Robinson Construction $5 million for work at Lake Village, Hidden Springs and Mount Harris at the Cliffs, Moisan has said. MAPI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2008. The bankruptcy was converted to a Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy in October.

To apply for help, women simply have to call and put in a request. “We don’t get into too much filtering,” Curd said. “Maybe in the future if we had more requests than we could cover, but at this point, we are able to fund women.” When a large request is made, such as a rent payment, the committee meets to discuss the
situation and decide whether the request can be fulfilled. More often than not, it can be. Kay Borvansky, of Steamboat Springs, had good health insurance and did not expect to need help from the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project when she was diagnosed with cancer 1 1/2 years ago. But expenses piled on, and she is thankful the organization was able to help. “They did help me with travel expenses,” Borvansky said. “Those kinds of expenses you think you’re not going to need,
but I was going down to Denver every three weeks, and it’s the gas and sometimes lunch or, in some cases, a place to stay.” Now, Borvansky is doing well, but she still actively participates in the organization’s fundraisers. “They’re fantastic, and really if you want to see it benefit people locally, it’s the perfect organization to help,” Borvansky said. Eduardo Capote is charged with felony second-degree assault and two counts of misdemeanor third-degree assault. According to Eduardo Capote’s arrest warrant, witnesses told police the Capotes instigated the fight and that
neither Lopez nor his friends fought back. The altercation stemmed from the two groups’ earlier disagreement about song selection on a restaurant jukebox, according to police. After leaving the restaurant, the groups crossed paths at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Seventh Street, where witnesses said the men yelled back and forth at one another. Independent witnesses told police that Eduardo Capote then rushed at Lopez and hit him in the face, knocking him

lady,” said Gaylord, who owns DeJa Vu Boutique in downtown Steamboat. Gaylord said she rides her bike when the weather is nice, and because of the clear skies this week she loaned a spare bike to her daughter so they could ride together. Routt County Riders spokeswoman Riley Polumbus said the good weather also encouraged more riders to get out on the trails across town. While the national Bike to Work Week is in May, the Colorado week is delayed until June to make sure it is warm enough. That worked out perfectly this year, she said.
“People who may not consider themselves hard-core recreationists may get on a bike to cruise around town or have fun with their family,” she said. Bike to Work Week in Steamboat continues with a skills clinic at 6 p.m. today at Howelsen Hill. Sponsored by Steamboat Ski and Bike Kare, the event will include lessons on wheelies, logs, cornering and descending. Interested riders should meet near the horse stables behind the rodeo arena. Friday will feature the first Steamboat Poker Ride, which will conclude with an awards ceremony at Ski Haus. Throughout the day, riders can pick up a
playing card at Orange Peel, Ski and Bike Kare, Howelsen Place Discovery Center, Sunpies Bistro and Ski Haus. The rider with the best poker hand at the end of the day wins a prize. Routt County Riders is requesting a $1 donation from participants. Bike to Work Week concludes Saturday with a family friendly ride starting at 11 a.m. at Wheels Bicycle Shop in west Steamboat. Riders will cruise along the Yampa River Core Trail to Yampa River Botanic Park where a barbecue and live music will greet them at 1 p.m. — To reach Zach Fridell, call 871-4208 or e-mail zfridell@steamboatpilot.com

Governor admits affair, apologizes South Carolina’s Sanford resigns as leader of the Republican Governors Association Jim Davenport
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
COLUMBIA, S.C.
After going AWOL for seven days, Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday that he had secretly flown to Argentina to visit a woman with whom he was having an affair. Wiping away tears, he apologized to his wife and four sons and said he will resign as the leader of the Republican Governors Association. “I’ve been unfaithful to my wife,” he said in a bombshell news conference in which the 49-year-old governor ruminated aloud with remarkable frankness on God’s law, moral absolutes and following one’s heart. He said he spent the last five days “crying in Argentina.” Sanford, who in recent months had been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2012, ignored questions about whether he would step
down as governor. At least one state lawmaker called for his resignation. As a congressman, Sanford voted in favor of three of four articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, citing the need for “moral legitimacy.” The affair is now over, Sanford said, describing the woman who lives in Argentina as a “dear, dear friend” that he’s known for about eight years and been romantically involved with for about a year. He said he’s seen her three times since the affair began and that his wife found out about it five months ago. “What I did was wrong. Period,” he said. His family did not attend the news conference, and his wife Jenny Sanford said she asked the governor to leave and stop speaking to her two weeks ago. The governor says he wants to reconcile, and his wife’s statement said her husband has earned a chance to resurrect their marriage.

Iran’s police swiftly crush protest
Thursday, June 25, 2009

Editor’s note — Iranian authorities have barred journalists for international news organizations from reporting on the streets and ordered them to stay in their offices. This report is based on the accounts of witnesses reached in Iran and official statements carried on Iranian media. Brian Murphy

A flood of security forces using tear gas and clubs quickly overwhelmed a small group of rock-throwing protesters near Iran’s parliament Wednesday, and the country’s supreme leader said the outcome of the disputed presidential election will stand — the latest signs of the government’s growing confidence in quelling unrest on the streets. As the election showdown has shifted, demonstrators are finding themselves increasingly scattered and struggling under a blanket crackdown that the wife of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi compared to martial law. In Wednesday’s clashes, thousands of police crushed hundreds of Mousavi supporters. The statement by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that the June 12 election of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would not be reversed was accompanied by a vow that the nation’s rulers would never yield to demands from the streets. Since last week’s protests, the government has unleashed days of escalating force, including the full weight of the powerful Revolutionary Guard and its feared civilian militias on the opposition. Social networking sites carried claims of brutal tactics by police such as savage beatings with batons, but the report could not be independently confirmed. In the battle for public opinion, the leaders also ramped up a familiar smear campaign: that the opposition was being aided by the United States and other perceived foes of Iran.

Stocks end mostly higher after Fed assessment THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK
The Federal Reserve didn’t surprise investors but still left them disappointed. Stocks closed mostly higher Wednesday after the Fed said the economy was on the mend and orders for big-ticket manufactured items posted an unexpected increase. Although the Dow Jones industrials fell modestly, the broader market measures ended the day with gains.
Bond prices fell after the Fed said it wouldn’t step up its spending to purchase Treasurys and other debt to pry interest rates lower. The central bank’s decision to leave its key lending rate at a low of zero to 0.25 percent was anticipated, but some investors have been hoping the central bank would do more to help revive the economy. Others wanted the Fed to more clearly lay out how it will keep inflation in check. “The Fed is still stuck on
that tightrope of trying to make sure they provide enough reassurance to keep the recovery going but, at the same time, try to allay the concern that they won’t allow inflation to get going either,” said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank in Cleveland. In the economic assessment statement accompanying its rate decision, the Fed said the economy doesn’t appear to be sliding as quickly as it had been. It noted that consumer spend-
ing has shown further signs of stabilizing although job losses, shrinking wealth and tight credit remain problems. And while the Fed said economic activity is likely to remain weak for some time, it repeated its belief that stimulus policies will restore the economy to growth. The Fed’s opinion could help reassure investors. A stock market rally that began in early March has faded as traders worried that the economy and corporate profits might not rebound as quickly as hoped.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up 33.2 percent from a 12-year low reached March 9, but down 4.8 percent from its most recent peak June 12. Investors have been concerned that rising prices or higher interest rates could upend a recovery. Policymakers noted that energy and other commodities prices have risen, although they said “substantial resource slack” would likely rein in cost pressures and that inflation “will remain subdued for some time.”

Rockies fall to Angels
TOWN CHALLENGE
All she needs is 1 speed
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
ANAHEIM, CALIF.
Vladimir Guerrero ended a 28-game home run drought and had three RBIs, and Bobby Abreu drove in three runs with a homer and a double as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Colorado Rockies, 11-3, on Wednesday night. The Angels, trying to win three WEDNESDAY’S straight division titles for the first GAME: time in the franRockies 3 chise’s 49-year Angels 11 history, remained tied with Texas for the American League West lead after falling a season-worst 5 1/2 games off the pace May 13. Joe Saunders (8-4) allowed a run and four hits in six-plus innings, including a solo homer to Garrett Atkins leading off the seventh. He struck out six and walked one and improved to 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in eight interleague starts. Chone Figgins was 3 for 4 and scored four runs, helping hand the Rockies their second straight loss after a stretch where they won 17 of 18. Jason Marquis (9-5) threw 88 pitches in 3 1/3 innings in the second-shortest of his 15 starts this season. The right-hander, trying to tie Kevin Slowey and the injured Roy Halladay for the major league lead in wins, retired nine of the 21 batters he faced and allowed eight runs and seven hits. One of the runs was unearned, the result of a fielding error by three-time Gold Glove first baseman Todd Helton in the fourth. Helton misplayed a leadoff grounder by Eric Aybar before Torii Hunter drove him in with an infield single that made it 7-0 and chased Marquis. Josh Fogg came in to face Guerrero and threw a wild pitch that enabled Figgins to score. Marquis needed 30 pitches to get out of the Angels’ three-run first. Guerrero drove in the first run with a double that ended an 0-for-14 rut. Guerrero, playing his second game since getting rid of his trademark dreadlocks, made it See Rockies, page 22

The Steamboat Springs American Legion baseball team found out Wednesday night that you can’t bookend two bad innings around otherwise solid play and win. Playing a doubleheader against Eagle Valley, Steamboat let an eight-run second inning produce a 12-5 loss in the first game, before three unearned runs in the last inning of the second game led
to an 11-10 loss. “The bottom line is we’re learning,” Steamboat manager Dave Roy said. “We’re getting exposed to some situations that will make us better. That’s what summer ball is all about.” It also didn’t help that in the first game, Eagle Valley threw a pitcher who’s among the class of the Western Slope. Senior-to-be Jack Barbella twirled a gem. Barbella threw a complete game six-hitter. He gave up five runs, three of which were
earned, and struck out 14. That second inning did Steamboat in. Eagle Valley put together seven hits, drew three walks and pushed eight runs across to take an early lead. Steamboat pushed two runs across in the third and another in the fourth on a solo shot by Matt Watwood. Eagle Valley scored four more in the fifth to take a 12-3 lead. In the seventh, Watwood had a two-run double to cut the lead to 12-5 before Barbella finished the See Baseball, page 23
Glance at the results from Wednesday’s Thunderhead Hill Climb Town Challenge Mountain Bike race, and it might be easy to miss Karen Tremaine’s astonishing accomplishment. Tremaine isn’t listed anywhere among the top finishers in the women’s expert category, the most competitive of the women’s divisions. That’s because Tremaine proved to be in a class all her own again Wednesday. She easily won the women’s single-speed bike competition, and in dominating fashion, won the women’s overall race, as well. She surged up the steep trail that led racers from the bottom of Steamboat Ski Area to the top of the gondola, and she did it with just one gear. She finished the challenging climb in 42 minutes, 28 seconds. “I’ve done this race a lot, and this time I felt like I pushed the hardest,” Tremaine said. “I just felt good today.” The Town Challenge veteran said she changed out a gear on her One Cycle single speed, opting for an easier climbing gear. Still, there were parts of the course where one gear didn’t feel adequate. “I had to be standing a lot. You can sit more on a geared bike,” Tremaine said. Tremaine wasn’t the only racer to enjoy a strong showing. Barkley Robinson won the men’s race, setting a new course record with a time of 33:52. Tremaine also wasn’t the only rider forced out of the saddle for Wednesday’s grueling climb. Many racers hopped off their bikes to push around corners and up tough sections of the trail. Both were doused in sweat after reaching the summit. “It’s steep,” Jones said. “At the start, I could see the top, so I knew where I was going. I didn’t know if I’d be able to bike the whole thing.” He paused, casting an eye toward the top of Storm Peak, still an imposing height even from the Thunderhead summit. “I didn’t realize we were so close to the finish. I thought we were going all the way to the top of that one,” he said, pointing up. Racers handled the terrain in all different manners. Brad Bingham and Essam Welch filed in behind Robinson, finishing at 35:25 and 35:30. Kelly Boniface, meanwhile, was second among the women. She finished at 42:39. Kate Rench was third at 48:48. No matter whether racers were fast or slow or racing with nearly two dozen gears or just one, after reaching the top of Thunderhead they all agreed on one thing. Ritter completes unassisted triple play game with a strikeout. In the second game, Steamboat jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the fifth before Eagle Valley tied it in the bottom half of the inning. Steamboat took a 10-8 lead into the seventh, but three errors gave way to three unearned runs and an Eagle Valley win. “The young guys are getting there,” said Watwood, who finished the doubleheader with two home runs and seven RBIs. “The more they play the better they get. It’s just going to take some reps.”
It wasn’t all bad news for Steamboat. In the fourth inning of the second game, incoming freshman Justin Ritter completed an unassisted triple play. Ritter, playing shortstop, caught a soft liner, touched second and then tagged the runner going from first to second. “When he hit it, I couldn’t see it because the sun was in my eyes,” Ritter said. “When I caught it, I knew the guy had stolen because I yelled it so I touched the bag. Then I tagged the guy coming from first. For a while it didn’t feel like anything. Now it feels pretty good.” And pretty improbable. Ac-

cording to Major League Baseball, there have been 659 triple plays in the history of professional baseball. Of those 659, only 14 have been unassisted. The last one came in 2008, when Cleveland Indians second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera did exactly what Ritter did. The Steamboat Legion team next plays a doubleheader on Sunday at Summit. There is potential for a home doubleheader on July 5, but Roy was still waiting to hear from some teams. — To reach Luke Graham, call 871-4229 or e-mail lgraham@steamboatpilot.com

Britain has replaced America as Iran’s “Great Satan.” That’s the upshot of the announcement Wednesday that the Islamic Republic of Iran is considering downgrading its diplomatic ties to Britain, the country’s former colonial ruler. The comments by Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Iranian state television signal a concerted effort to blame the British for the chaotic postelection street demonstrations threatening the government, experts say. “The British role as former colonial masters makes them easy

targets,” said Michael Williams, a professor of international relations at the University of London who advised Barack Obama’s campaign on foreign affairs. “The Iranians have a history of using the British as a proxy when they can’t get at the United States.” Williams said the Obama administration has been very careful not to fuel the volatile situation, while the British have drawn verbal fire because of the BBC’s prominent role as trusted broadcaster inside Iran. “The BBC Persian Service is very popular and respected in Iran, and the BBC is working actively to increase its satellite coverage and foil Iranian attempts to block their signal, this has made the Iranian government very suspicious,” he said. Williams also noted the British have opened their embassy in Tehran to treat people injured in the demonstrations. Suspicions that the British are helping to keep the protests going prompted the Iranian government to expel two British diplomats, prompting Britain to respond in kind Tuesday. Britain has many historical ties to Iran — far more than the United States or other Western countries — that help to explain the bad blood between the countries. Tensions go back as far as the 1813 Treaty of Gulistan, a British-brokered treaty that ceded Iranian land to Russia and painted all British intentions as devious in Iran’s eyes.
Editor’s note — Iranian authorities have barred journalists for international news organizations from reporting on the streets and ordered them to stay in their offices. This report is based on the accounts of witnesses reached in Iran and official statements carried on Iranian media. Rebecca Santana

For years, women’s defiance in Iran came in carefully planned flashes of hair under their head scarves, brightly painted fingernails and trendy clothing that could be glimpsed under bulky coats and cloaks. But these small acts of rebellion against the theocratic government have been quickly eclipsed in the wake of the disputed June 12 presidential elections. In their place came images of Iranian women marching alongside men, of their scuffles with burly militiamen, of the sobering footage of a young woman named Neda, blood pouring from her mouth and nose minutes after her fatal shooting. In a part of the Muslim world where women are often repressed, these images have catapulted Iran’s female demonstrators to the forefront of the country’s opposition movement. It is a role, say Iranian women and experts, that few seem willing to give up, and one that likely will
present President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s hardline government with even greater challenges in the wake of the recent violence and protests. “Iranian women are very powerful and they want their freedom,” said one woman in Tehran who said she’s been taking part in the protests. Like all women in Iran interviewed for this story, she did not want to be named, fearing government retribution. “They’re really, really repressed, and they need to talk about it.” The election seemed to open the floodgates for airing that sense of frustration. Claims by Ahmadinejad’s chief rival for the presidency, Mir Hossein Mousavi, that the election was riddled with fraud were the catalyst for days of protest following the vote. The government’s harsh response — evidenced in hundreds of arrests, the deaths of more than a dozen demonstrators, clampdowns on the media, the refusal of the country’s theocratic leaders to entertain the possibility of a recount — fueled popular discontent across wide swaths of the population. But there is an extra layer of resentment and anger among many of Iran’s 35 million women. Many fear that a second term for a man who was first elected in 2005 in part on a platform of restoring “Islamic values” will only prove to be worse than the first.
