Instead of sleeping, “chilling” or biking as they usually would on a gorgeous summer morning, about 20 teenagers helped out Saturday at houses where Horizons Specialized Services clients live. The youths were part of a volunteer team from Concordia Lutheran Church. Four remained at a house in the Riverside neighborhood at about noon. They already had painted a garage door, trimmed a tree and done other odd jobs. The group was painting a deck before heading out for a birthday party. “It’s like a community, and we really gotta help each other, and most of this stuff doesn’t happen unless we make it happen,” said Nikki Van de Velde, 14. She painted alongside her twin brother, John, and their friends Cheyenne Chadwick and Hanson Buchner. Cheyenne and Hanson came partly because they’d slept over at the Van de Velde house Friday night. Hanson said it was important to help others in the community. Lending a hand makes things easier, he said, because “disabled people who can’t do this work wouldn’t be able to get it done without having to pay somebody, especially in this economy.” See Horizons, back page

Local GOP to talk health care issues

Keynote speaker plans to compare US and European approaches

Comparing health care systems in Europe with those in the United States and how the American system could change under President Barack Obama is the topic of Wednesday’s Routt County Republican Central Committee meeting. Henry Fabian, an orthopedic surgeon at Yampa Valley Medical Center, will be the keynote speaker at the group’s regular meeting held on the first Wednesday of every month. Members of the public are invited to attend at noon in the third floor commissioners’ hearing room of the Routt County Courthouse. Jack Taylor, chairman of the Republican Central Committee and retired state senator, said the local party dedicates 30 to 60 minutes of each meeting to a discussion about current issues. He said health care is a timely one. “It’s near the top of the agenda of things coming down the pike at the federal level, and a pretty highly contested one,” Taylor said. Fabian said he has a unique perspective on the subject, having practiced in Europe and the U.S. He said the goal of his address is to relay some of the facts and “false truths” about single-payer systems, which are used in many European countries and are similar to the health care plan proposed by Obama. Fabian said there’s a percep-

tion that many European health systems are more costeffective, but he says that’s “simply not true.” They’re perceived that way because health care in those countries is rationed, he said. Fabian also said there’s a false perception that singlepayer systems have lower overhead costs. Fabian said overhead costs of a U.S. version of that type of system, Medicare, have increased 34 percent since 1965 and administration costs have increased 2,000 percent since the mid-1980s. He said that illustrates that a government-run, single-payer system in the U.S. is less efficient than private insurance. “It’s counter-intuitive to me that the federal government would be more innovative and cost-effective (than private) when they’ve never been able to do that,” Fabian said. He said health care is a critically important issue because it affects everyone. Fabian said offering tax credits to hospitals and private-practice physicians who treat individuals without insurance could help bridge the access gap. He also said removing restrictions so that private insurance providers can sell insurance across state lines would help.

n an effort to grow beautiful flowers, fruit and vegetables, we gardeners tend to coddle our plants. The second the soil is dry, wet water. If it looks like an insect is chewing on it, we apply insecticides. To control weeds, we use herbicides. And we apply fertilizers, and protective covers on cool nights, and all manner of protection to achieve a perfect, county-fair worthy specimen. Well, now it’s been scientifically proven — in February’s “Science News” — that a little tough love will produce a more nutritious and more flavorful fruit or vegetable and perhaps a more aromatic, colorful flower. They may not look as good, and perhaps have a few holes in the leaves where insects have dined, but they are beautiful where it counts: inside. See Gardening, page 14

Search for Green postponed A decision about when to reschedule an extensive search for Rebecca Green, the Steamboat Springs woman who has been missing since she fell into Fish Creek on June 13, has not been reached, Routt County Sheriff Gary Wall said Sunday. Wall canceled a large-scale search scheduled for today that would have involved Summit County Water Rescue, in addition to Routt County Search and Rescue members. He said the creek’s water level is the

was his responsibility, he said. Green, 40, and her 8-year-old son Kade fell into Fish Creek below the upper falls June 13. Kade pulled himself from the creek after grabbing a branch and was treated for minor injuries. Search and Rescue member Jim Linville said a more extensive search initially was scheduled for today because Fish Creek’s 30-year water level average indicated it might be low enough to safely search the area. But that’s not the case this year, with continued run off from See Green, page 35

same as it was two weeks ago when Summit County crews assisted Routt County’s search team. “This is a very troublesome thing for us,” Wall said. “It’s emotional — a local person gone. It was a very difficult decision to call off the search (today). COMMENTARY

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?

Genius in the bottle Maureen Dowd

THE NEW YORK TIMES

As in all great affairs, Mark Sanford fell in love simultaneously with a woman and himself — with the dashing new version of himself he saw in her molten eyes. In a weepy, gothic unraveling, the South Carolina governor gave a press conference illustrating how smitten he was, not only with his Argentine amante but with his own tenderness, his own pathos and his own feminine side. Dowd He got into trouble as a man and tried to get out as a woman. He wanted to get his girlfriend a DVD of the movie “The Holiday,” presumably the Cameron Diaz-Kate Winslet chick flick about two women, one from L.A. and one from England, who trade homes and lives. He was fantasizing about cata-

pulting himself into an exotic life where stimulus had nothing to do with budgets. With Maria, he no longer was the penny-pinching millionaire Mark, who used to sleep on a futon in his congressional office and once treated two congressmen to movie refreshments by bringing back a Coke and three straws. No, he was someone altogether more fascinating: Marco, international man of mystery and suave god of sex and tango. Mark was the self-righteous, Biblethumping prig who pressed for Bill Clinton’s impeachment; Marco was the un-self-conscious Lothario, canoodling with Maria in Buenos Aires, throwing caution to the e-wind about their “soulmate feel,” her tan lines, her curves, “the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of night’s light.” Mark is a conservative railing against sinners; Marco sins liberally. Mark opposes gay marriage as a threat to traditional marriage. Marco thinks nothing of risk-

ing his own traditional marriage, and celebrates transgressive relationships. He frets to Maria in e-mail that he sounds “like the Thornbirds — wherein I was always upset with Richard Chamberlain for not dropping his ambitions and running into Maggie’s arms.” Marco, the libertine, wonders how they will ever “put the Genie back in the bottle.” And in the sort of Freudian slip that any solipsistic pol like Mark would adore, Maria protests in Spanglish: “I don’t want to put the genius back in the bottle.” Mark is so frugal for the taxpayers that he made his staffers use both sides of Post-it notes and index cards, and once brought two (defecating) pigs named “Pork” and “Barrel” into the statehouse to express his disgust with lawmakers’ pet spending projects. Marco is a sly scamp who found a sneaky way to make South Carolina taxpayers pay for a south-of-the-border romp See Dowd, page 9

Which was your favorite Michael Jackson? Not your favorite Michael Jackson song, but your favorite Michael? There were so many of him. News that the “King of Pop” had died at age 50 might well have felt more shocking had he not shocked us so often in the past. He shocked the world in a good way back when he was a child. Fronting for his older brothers in the Page Jackson Five, he thrilled a lot of us when we were children — decades before we would find ourselves trying to explain him to our own children. Even at age 11, when the group scored their first No. 1 hit, Michael’s own versions of Jackie Wilson’s and James

Brown’s stagecraft lifted the J-5’s bubblegum soul from Gary, Indiana, novelty act to international stardom. In the late 1970s, he shocked us again, this time with how much he had grown as an all-around music and dance artist. He teamed up with producer Quincy Jones to enrich the last days of disco with “Off the Wall,” which many critics call Jackson’s best album. I’m partial to “Thriller,” the biggest-selling record of all time and one of the most influential. Jackson’s 13-minute “Thriller” video became a classic and encouraged the young and timid MTV to air more black musicians. It also led to Michael’s next shock. He began turning white. Questions began to grow around Jackson. Was he getting plastic surgery? (Gee, do ya think?) Skin peels? What else was he changing? Why didn’t he have any girlfriends? Even in the music world, where gossip is at least the second favorite leisure activ-

ity, questions about Jackson took center stage. It was a tribute to his prodigious talent that we even cared. Jackson seemed to relish feeding our speculation. His friends ranged from Elizabeth Taylor to Bubbles the chimp. Or was he just being weird? He built a new estate in Central California, complete with amusement park rides, and called it Neverland Ranch, after the place where Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up, lived with Tinkerbell and the Lost Boys. Hey, it was his money, right? But it also revealed a sad, lonely and confused side to the gifted star, a side that seemed to be confirmed by our next shock. In a 1993 sit-down with Oprah Winfrey, Jackson claimed to have vitiligo, a skin disorder that can leave its victims without skin color. He revealed heartrending accounts of crying from loneliness as a child. He said See Page, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

built from there.” Actually, the one thing David didn’t do after his adulterous fall was build, because he was forbidden by God to construct his dream temple in Jerusalem. Sanford should give his piety a rest. He told his Cabinet that the Psalms taught him humility. (There’s a chance that a younger Argentine boyfriend of Maria’s also taught him humility, by jealously hacking into her e-mail account and leaking the governor’s missives.) Sanford can be truly humble only if he stops dictating to others, who also have desires and weaknesses, how to behave in their private lives. The Republican Party will never revive itself until its sanctimonious pantheon — Sanford, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Palin, Ensign, Vitter and hypocrites yet to be exposed — stop being twofaced.

Jackson was a victim and a showman Page continued from 8 he was abused so badly by his father that he sometimes would get sick and start to vomit when he saw the elder Jackson’s face. After his death, those stories give new meaning to his songs about the “Man in the Mirror” and how “it don’t matter if you’re black or white.” Was he trying to convince us or himself? As the man that the aging Michael saw in the mirror increasingly resembled his father, according to Jackson biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli, he seemed increasingly determined to change his face. Sad. Yet the same troubled-childhood stories that elicited so much public sympathy were turned against him when he was charged with pedophilia. He was never found guilty in

court, but questions remain, fed by his many eccentricities, that stain his legacy and enrich his mystique. After all, Jackson was a victim but also a showman. Michael Levine, a publicist who represented Jackson in the early 1990s, called him a “disciple of P.T. Barnum,” according to AP, who was “much more cunning and shrewd about the industry than anyone knew.” “There’s a sucker born every minute,” said the circus master Barnum, and “Every crowd has a silver lining.” He promoted newsmaking hoaxes from time to time. Even when the hoax was exposed, Barnum reasoned, any publicity was good publicity. Stoking the gossip helped Jackson’s ticket and music sales, too. But controversy ceased to be much fun when his fame morphed into infamy and threat-

ened his freedom. I don’t know whether Jackson was guilty as charged. I don’t know what it is like to be surrounded by people who are telling you how wonderful you are, after a childhood of being told that you’re not. But it is not hard to understand how, after living so long with his fantasies, he might have lost sight of what’s acceptable behavior in the real world. Mourning his death pulls us back through a kaleidoscopic montage of the many Michaels we have come to know throughout the years. He leaves behind more questions than we can ever answer. But his electrifying music and moonwalks never seem to get old. Preserved in music and videos, we can continue to appreciate his art and the childhood that he sacrificed in order to create it.

with his mistress. Mark is so selfish, he tried to enhance his presidential chances by resisting South Carolina’s share of President Barack Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package, callously giving the back of his hand to the suffering state’s most vulnerable — the jobless and poor and black students. Marco is generous, promising to send a memento of affection that Maria wants to keep by her bed. Mark hates lying. As he said of Bill’s dalliance with Monica, “If you undermine trust in our system, you undermine everything.” Marco lies with brio, misleading his family, his lieutenant governor, his staff and his state about his whereabouts, even packing camping equipment to throw off the scent from South America. He told whoppers to

his wife, a former investment banker who managed his campaigns and raises his four sons (solo on Father’s Day). She put out a statement quoting Psalm 127 to snidely remind her besotted husband “that sons are a gift from the Lord.” Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press on Friday that Mark had told her he needed time to be alone and write, so she was stunned to learn he was in Argentina on a “Roman Holiday.” Before he left to “write,” she warned him not to skip off to the other woman. Mark, who disdains rascals, agreed that he wouldn’t. Marco, who is a rascal, skipped off. Mark went back to work Friday, giving his Cabinet a lecture on personal responsibility and comparing himself to King David, who “fell mightily ... in very, very significant ways but then picked up the pieces and

his is always one of my favorite times in Steamboat Springs and at the Strings Music Festival. The flowers are blooming — it has finally stopped raining — summer visitors are arriving, and Strings musicians are coming and going. It is great to see some of our old Strings favorites return, Greene such as Chee-Yun and Evan Premo, and also really fun to meet artists new to our stage. The Pavilion, in its second season, is a phenomenal space, unlike anywhere else in the area. I encourage you to come visit us for a concert this week. On Wednesday, Chee-Yun returns to Strings for an evening of short and showy pieces. Of particular note is Claude Bolling’s Suite for Violin and Jazz Piano Trio. French-born Bolling was a child piano prodigy. Although he spent most of his time devoted to ragtime, blues, New Orleans jazz, boogie-woogie and swing, he is best known in the classical world for his crossover suites written and arranged specifically for virtuosic classical soloists and a jazz rhythm section, such as the one performed Wednesday night by Chee-Yun, violin; Wendy Chen, piano; Evan Premo, bass; and Todd Reid, percussion. Thursday and Friday bring in legendary musicians, The Neville Brothers. This marks the largest production Strings has ever presented. Band members

Plan for a fun and safe road trip

Tamera Manzanares

SPECIAL TO THE PILOT & TODAY

Editor’s Note: This article originally was published in June 2008. A well-planned road trip is a fun road trip, but for older adults, in particular, a bit of forethought can prevent the headaches and emergencies that plague the worst car excursions.

Vehicle safety

No one wants to be stranded with a broken-down car, so one of the most important steps in preparing for a road trip is to schedule a preventative maintenance check with a mechanic. Depending on how well owners have kept up with regular maintenance such as oil changes and tire rotations, a basic vehicle safety check should include inspection of tires, battery, belts and hoses, wiper blades, the cooling system, fluid levels, lights and air conditioning, according to recommendations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are many gadgets and services to help give travelers more piece of mind when hitting the road. The American Automobile Association or AAA and most car insurance companies have basic roadside assistance available for drivers. Drivers with cars equipped with OnStar technology can subscribe to the service, which allows them to connect with an adviser who then contacts emergency services. OnStar is only installed in the factory, however, and also is dependent on a vehicle’s electrical system. In-car GPS navigation systems, though expensive, can provide drivers with colored maps, audible instructions and other features to help them navigate their routes. Drivers also can opt for navigation assistance

from AAA and other companies through their cell phones. Travelers concerned about bad weather and other hazards may want to invest in a weather radio. Available at sporting goods stores, the devices pick up local weather and emergency information and may include a built-in flashlight and other features. If drivers are going to buy one gadget, it probably should be a cell phone, which will enable them to call for help if stranded or hurt. Companies such as Jitterbug offer user-friendly phones and pre-paid service ideal for older adults who primarily want cell service for emergencies.

Planning routes When planning their route, travelers should avoid major road construction projects and driving during rush hours, especially in big cities. State departments of transportation provide updates regarding road conditions and construction projects. The Colorado Department of Transportation Web site, www. cotrip.org, also includes information about rest areas and points of interest throughout the state, as well as links to road information in other states. Travelers also can access CDOT road, weather and construction information by calling 1-877-315-ROAD. Drivers approaching big cities can find out about traffic tie-ups and accidents by tuning into local radio — usually AM or news stations. Travelers with medical conditions such as diabetes, heart, respiratory or other illnesses may want to research and make note of towns along their route that have hospitals or clinics. It’s also helpful to highlight city and state parks on maps in case drivers need places to rest, eat lunch or are traveling with children. Finally, before leaving, travel-

ers should give their route and schedule to a family member or friend staying at home and check in with that person regularly. A sometimes overlooked aspect of planning a road trip is food. Although stopping at roadside diners, fast food restaurants and convenience stores is easy, too many refined carbohydrates and fried foods will make drivers feel sluggish while driving. Enjoying healthy snacks from the cooler or local grocery stores will give road trippers a more peaceful experience on the road. At the same time, it will give them more reason to escape “anywhere U.S.A.” while getting a taste of the culture, history and environment of a place through small museums and areas of interest featured at local parks. Dennis Weaver, author of various food articles on roadtrip. com, recommends packing fresh fruit and veggies, such as pre-cut carrot and celery sticks, grapes and cherry tomatoes, as well as homemade trail mix with nuts and dried fruit, individual servings of applesauce and canned fruit, cream cheese for dipping and homemade oatmeal cookies. Paper plates, napkins, utensils,

Suggested emergency roadside kit: ■ Cell phone ■ First aid kit ■ Flashlight ■ Flares and a white flag ■ Jumper cables ■ Jack and ground mat for changing a tire ■ Basic repair tools and duct tape (for temporarily repairing a hose leak) ■ A jug of water and paper towels for cleaning up ■ Nonperishable food, drinking water and medicines ■ Extra windshield washer fluid ■ Maps Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

cups and a pocketknife will make eating healthy on the road all the more convenient. Food poisoning can be the quickest end to a fun road trip. Weaver suggests keeping a thermometer in the top of coolers and making sure it reads below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, cleaning surfaces and coolers with a sanitizing solution and washing and disinfecting hands often.

Smart driving Like maintaining and checking their car for safety, it’s important that drivers make sure their bodies and medical considerations are in check before hitting the road. “Tips for Boomers planning a road trip,” an article at carjunky.com, suggests older travelers have their vision and hearing checked regularly and make sure to give themselves time to adjust to a new eye glass prescription before taking a long trip. Drivers also should check with their doctor or pharmacist about whether medications they are taking may cause drowsiness or affect their driving. Road trippers also may need

to consider whether they may need a cooler (models are available that plug into a car’s cigarette lighter) for medications that require refrigeration. Drivers should make sure they are well-rested before the trip and, while on the road, they should try to stop every couple of hours to rest and stretch, even if they don’t feel tired. Minimizing distractions (make sure grandchildren have plenty of toys and games to keep them busy) and sharing the driving responsibilities with another person can help make road trips safe and more enjoyable. Driving in big cities or new places can be overwhelming for anyone, but older adults also must contend with changes in hearing, vision and their reaction time to potentially dangerous situations. Drivers 50 and older who are interested in becoming more aware of how these changes are affecting their driving or just want to brush up on their driving skills, may consider taking the AARP’s Driver Safety Program, offered several times a year Steamboat Springs and Craig, as well as online. The eight-hour course includes a self-assessment test, as well as tips for avoiding aggressive drivers, driving in the mountains and on freeways and other helpful information for driving in all types of situations. This article contains information from, “Road trip ideas in the U.S. for seniors,” at www. helium.com, and “Driving tips,” at www.independenttraveler.com. YVMC solicits comments through Web site hospitals nationwide. YVMC received Avatar’s Exemplary Service — Overall Best Performer award for the seventh consecutive year, placing among the top 20 hospitals in the company’s national database of more than 300 hospitals. Just one other hospital has managed this feat each year since 2003. The Overall Best Performer award is based on 2008 patient survey results. It is awarded to hospitals of any size with the highest overall combined score for inpatient, outpatient, emergency department and ambulatory surgery. YVMC also achieved the Five-Star Service award in emergency care. This award — given to only the top 2.5 percent of Avatar-surveyed hospitals – measures patients’ overall satisfaction with their visit to an emergency department. Last but not least, YVMC received the Exceeding Patient Expectations award, which is earned by about one-third of hospitals that use the Avatar survey system. As a regional medical center serving residents of Northwest Colorado and southern Wyoming and visitors from across the world, YVMC always has sought and valued patient feedback. YVMC Director of Performance Excellence Kady

Watson said all three awards honor the hard work and personalized care provided by many individual employees, physicians and volunteers in numerous hospital departments. Watson added that the awards are validated by feedback from patients during their hospital stays or after they have returned home. “These awards echo the verbal and written communications we receive from patients on an ongoing basis,” Watson said. “We get letters, e-mails and phone calls from around the country that the care they received at YVMC exceeded their expectations.” Watson said most inpatients and outpatients receive a survey in the mail about six weeks after receiving hospital services. The survey asks a number of questions and requests written comments. “We notify employees of comments in our internal newsletter, on bulletin boards and through individual recognition,” Watson said. “Patient care involves teams of caregivers from numerous departments. That is why everyone at YVMC can share a sense of pride about the hospital’s top rankings.” Patients do not need to wait for a survey to express a question or concern, however. “We welcome feedback while patients are still here at the hospital,” Watson said.

“If someone has a concern, we would prefer to address it during their stay. I then work with hospital department leadership and the patient to resolve any issues.” YVMC also solicits patient comments through its Web site, www.yvmc.org. Patients can send staff members a note of thanks, ask a question or share a concern. In closing, here are a few more survey comments: “I think all my needs were taken care of with the utmost care and respect. Thanks again!” “Being an irregular heartbeater, I was scared to take the stress test. But Dr. Baker and the two assistants made me laugh and feel safe — they were awesome. Would drive from Craig anytime to use Yampa Valley Medical Center.” “Your hospital ER was just the best. It was Saturday night and service was still prompt. According to a study by researchers at the University of California-Davis, crops that are not coddled, e.g. those that are grown organically, “far surpassed their conventionally grown kin for vitamins and beneficial micronutrients, such as the antioxidant flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol.” Flavonoids have been shown to reduce high blood pressure which helps prevent heart attacks and stroke. There’s also some limited research showing that flavonoids can help prevent certain types of cancer. The nutritional value of a fruit or vegetable tends to fall into two categories: primary and secondary plant metabolites. The primary metabolites include the fats in the plant, carbohydrates, amino acids and sugars. Most of us are familiar with these nutrients since they are the ones usually listed on food labels. Secondary metabolites have such unfamiliar names as carotenoids, alkaloids, phytosterols, saponins, sulphides and flavonids, among many others. These usually are present in

BLM firefighter killed near Craig CRAIG DAILY PRESS

CRAIG

A Bureau of Land Management firefighter was killed Friday afternoon in an accident while working on a hazard-tree removal project, the BLM office reported in a news release Saturday. Craig resident Brett Stearns, 29, was killed about 4:30 p.m. Friday during a hazard tree abatement project at Freeman Reservoir, 15 miles northeast of Craig. A federal accident investigation team is conducting a “detailed investigation” into the fatal incident, the BLM reported. Stearns was working on a project with about 12 other BLM firefighters when he was struck by a falling tree. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Stearns was an engine captain and had worked in the fire program for the BLM Little Snake Field Office in Craig since 1999. “He was a leader,” said Lynn Barclay, a BLM fire mitigation/ education specialist with the Little Snake Field Office. “People looked up to him. He had the capability to inspire people, all those around him, to go the distance and do their best. “He was a wonderful person.” Stearns is survived by his wife, mother, father, brother and halfsister, the BLM reported. A funeral service has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday

at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel, 1295 W. Ninth St., in Craig. John Husband, Little Snake Field Office manager, said Stearns was a brave public servant. “On behalf of the Little Snake Field Office and the Northwest Colorado Interagency Fire Management Unit, I offer my condolences to the family and friends of Brett Stearns,” Husband said in the news release. “He dedicated his life to protecting the lives and property of the public. Firefighting is a dangerous profession, and firefighter safety is the number one priority on fires and projects such as this.” There are more than 40 active firefighters working for the BLM’s offices in Meeker, Kremmling and Craig. Barclay said Stearns’ death has been hard on his fellow firefighters and BLM officials. “The fire community is a family,” she said. “We’re tight-knit, close. It’s hit everyone very hard, but people are banding together and supporting the Stearns family and looking at how we can best remember Brett and honor him.” Stearns was “always eager” to work with children on fire education and prevention programs at area schools, Barclay said, and was a mentor to new recruits. Stearns served as an instructor at times with the Colorado Wildfire and Incident Management Academy. “He was a really kind and caring person,” Barclay said.

Government program allows canines to assist wounded warriors

mares. Klonopin to control anger and anxiety. His next dose of treatment will come from an unlikely source: a purebred Golden Retriever. A new Veterans Administration program adopts dogs from animal shelters, trains them and matches them with wounded warriors home from Iraq and Afghanistan to help with their recovery. For Briggs, his dog will be trained to help him find his wallet, cell phone and keys, which he habitually loses because of cognitive memory loss. The dog also will brace Briggs, who has an ankle injury, so he doesn’t have to use a cane or walker in public. “I call him my little battle buddy,” the 24-year-old Briggs said as he strapped his old camouflage assault vest onto Harper. It’s modified to store biscuits and toys instead of ammunition. “I most definitely think he’ll help me transfer back to civilian life.” VA hospitals nationwide are integrating service dogs into treatment plans for dis-

abled vets, said Will Baldwin, a vocational rehabilitation counselor for the VA in Denver. The program was formed after Freedom Service Dogs, a Denver-based nonprofit, recently partnered with the VA. Training takes as many as nine months and costs $23,000. Service Dogs doesn’t charge its clients but relies on private donations and foundation grants. “The population is growing exponentially down in Fort Carson with the Wounded Warriors program,” said Freedom Service Dogs’ Diane Vertovec, referring to the Army unit that prepares wounded soldiers for civilian life. “We feel like a dog can help a vet meet physical challenges but, more importantly, can really, really help them overcome a lot of the mental instability that they’re feeling.” Service Dogs can train 43 dogs per year — a number that doesn’t come close to meeting demand. There are about 450 soldiers in the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Fort Carson.

The latest revenue forecast from Colorado legislative economists predicts the state’s unemployment benefits fund will dip below zero in the next year before rebounding. Having a negative balance would require the fund to borrow money from the federal government to pay benefits. The forecast released last week was worse than one from the Colorado Legislative Council Staff in March when it predicted the fund balance would approach insolvency with $44 million by June 30, 2010. The fund has been pressured by mass layoffs, plummeting employment and increased benefits payments. The unemployment rate in Colorado was 7.6 percent in May, up from 4.7 percent a year earlier. The fund is financed by state and federal assessments on employers and earns interest. Since 2004, employers also have been paying surcharges, which kick in when the fund balance gets too low. Legislative economists said rising surcharge rates, legislation injecting federal stimulus

dollars into the benefits fund and a recovering economy should bring the fund balance back above zero in fiscal 201011.

Ludlow Massacre monument dedicated as US landmark LUDLOW

About 700 people gathered as a southern Colorado site where 19 striking coal miners and family members were killed in 1914 was dedicated as a National Historic Landmark. Gov. Bill Ritter also was on hand for the dedication ceremony Sunday for the Ludlow Massacre Memorial Monument. United Mine Workers of America International President Cecil Roberts likened the monument to union members’ Vietnam War Memorial. The site about 180 miles south of Denver commemorates miners and their families who were suffocated April 20, 1914, when the Colorado National Guard and private security guards attacked a tent city where they were staying.

Hanley battling back

T

he spring stats read “one reception for 1 yard,” but for Jay Hanley, that little blurb meant a lot more. The 2008 Steamboat Springs High School graduate has had a trying and tiresome nine months at Kansas State University. Originally given a preferred walk-on spot by former Wildcats coach Ron Prince, Hanley has found out just how much football has meant to him. Prince was gone at the end of the season, and Hanley hadn’t done any sort of football activities in almost a year. He had shoulder surgery, and it didn’t recover quite the way he wanted to. He was away from the game most of last year, trying to rehab the shoulder and get back his strength. Hanley, who played at 220 to 240 pounds during high school, had ballooned up to 280. Add in new coach Bill Snyder returning to the program with a new staff, and Hanley admitted it was a tense time in his life. “I was worried what (the new coaching staff) thought of me,” Hanley said Friday from Kansas. “I didn’t feel like I was in a great place at the time. I was thinking how was I going to prove myself to play Division I when I was coming in weak and out of shape. I hadn’t played the game in a while, and that was probably my first real concern.” But the time off helped Hanley. It helped him refocus his efforts and realize that football was a big part of his life. He called it a blessing in disguise, but it was something more than that. It was necessary. Ricky Canton tries to flip his calf Friday during the tie-down roping event at the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo in downtown Steamboat. Canton’s time of 10.8 seconds wasn’t enough to please him, but it was good enough to place him third in the weekend’s rodeo.

Houston Ray Hutto stormed out of the starting gate on his horse, quickly lassoed and pulled his prey, a scrambling calf, to a screeching halt, his rope yanking taut around the horn of his saddle. He was off the mount and flying toward the steer in a flash,

the whole operation so smooth compared to some of the other competitors that fans didn’t have to ask what separated a National Finals Rodeo regular like Hutto from the average cowboy that charges into the Brent Romick Rodeo Arena spotlight during a Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo summer weekend. “I got right out on him,” Hutto said afterward. Of course he did. This was a

pro, a two-time College National Finals tie-down champion, a three-time NFR qualifier, a cowboy who won $50,000 in one swoop at the Houston Rodeo in 2007 and who has pocketed nearly $600,000 in the sport during his career. However, in an equally blinding flash, none of that seemed to matter. Hutto caught up to the beast and tried to flip it and tie it up, applying the tie-down

roping coup d’état. But the steer pulled away, and Hutto’s horse pulled the other way, dragging the helpless animal away from a stunned cowboy. By the time the horse finally stopped and the cowboy could finish the job, he was out of the money. “Terrible,” Hutto said afterward. “I could have flipped See Rodeo, page 24

OAKLAND, CALIF.

Aaron Cook is enjoying one of the most productive stretches of his career. It’s also Colorado’s best stretch since ending the 2007 season on a tear. Cook took a shutout into the ninth inning and won his

MLB fifth consecutive start as the Rockies defeated the Oakland Athletics, 3-1, on Sunday. “Even when other teams get one or two hits, he’s always one pitch away from putting the inning down,” Rockies’ manager Jim Tracy said. “That’s the

mindset of a pro, the mindset of a stalwart, front end of the rotation guy.” Chris Iannetta, Carlos Gonzalez and Seth Smith each drove in a run for the Rockies, who completed their first sweep of the A’s and their fourth sweep in June. Cook has a 1.75 ERA in his past five games, and with the

Rockies averaging more than 6 1/2 runs during that stretch, the combination has proved effective. The Rockies have won 20 of their past 23 games and improved to 22-7 under Tracy. “This is one of those games where we did some things to get some runs, and Aaron Cook See Rockies, page 22

He rededicated himself, got down to 235 pounds, strengthened his shoulders and said he is feeling as good and strong as he has since his junior year of high school when he burst onto the scene. He even took some first team reps during spring ball and figures to be in a group of four fullbacks that are fighting for playing time come the fall. The past nine months may have been tough, but Hanley was quick to admit they were, in fact, necessary. “Thinking about it now, it’s really I just learned to keep at it,” he said. “I’m pretty happy to be in the place I’m at. Federer, Williams Brazil rallies to beat US in Cup final strive for 6th title Chris Lehourites

JOHANNESBURG

TENNIS — WIMBLEDON

Brazil’s “Beautiful Game” came alive in the second half Sunday with three comeback goals in a 3-2 win against the United States in the Confederations Cup final. Luis Fabiano scored two of the goals, and Lucio added the third in the 84th minute to give Brazil its second straight Confederations Cup title and third overall. But it was all looking good for the Americans, playing in the men’s final of a FIFA tournament for the first time, in the first half when Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan gave the team a 2-0 halftime lead. “You realize why these guys are worth so much at times like this, but it’s still disappointing,” Donovan said. “We are in the position where we don’t want respect, we want to win.” Brazil really did look like a beaten team in the first 45 minutes, creating little and being constantly stymied by the United States defense and goalkeeper Tim Howard. During that time, the American attack was stretch-

twice a runner-up to Federer at Wimbledon. “All this money, and the weather’s been nice.” That might register as the biggest upset through six days of play at this edition of the grass-court Grand Slam tournament: 1995 was the last year there was no rain at all during Wimbledon, and while the lightest of sprinkles did emerge during Murray’s victory Saturday, it wasn’t deemed enough to warrant closing the top. “It would have been a nice bit of history, I guess,” Murray said. “The first match to play under the roof.” The 22-year-old has yet to show any signs of being the least bit intimidated by all the fuss about the sort of history his countrymen hope he’ll make next weekend. He even received a note from Queen Elizabeth II wishing him luck, and there’s a buzz building about whether she would make her first appearance at Wimbledon since 1977, if Murray were to reach the final.

WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND

As Week 1 gives way to Week 2 at Wimbledon on Monday, the primary story lines have not shifted since the beginning of the tournament. Will Roger Federer win a sixth Wimbledon championship and record 15th Grand Slam title? Will Andy Murray end Britain’s 73-year wait for a male singles champion at the All England Club? Will Venus Williams become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1991-93 to win the Venus Rosewater Dish three years in a row, bringing her career haul to six? Will Serena Williams end her older sister’s reign and add to her own Wimbledon championships from 2002 and 2003? Will they ever play a point on Centre Court with the spiffy new retractable roof closed? “The common joke has been that they haven’t had to use it yet,” said Andy Roddick,

ing the nervous-looking Brazil defense, with Donovan working hard to give his team several scoring chances. Although that quality play managed to give the Americans a hefty lead, Brazil was not about to let yet another title slip by. “At halftime, we said there was something lacking, some lack of positioning,” Brazil coach Dunga said through a translator. “We corrected that, and we pressured our opponent in the second half, and we were able to score a goal.” Luis Fabiano started the comeback in the 46th minute. The striker collected a pass from Ramires before turning and shooting past defender Jay DeMerit for his fourth goal of the tournament. He added a tournament-leading fifth to equalize in the 74th, heading in a rebound after Kaka’s cross was kicked against the crossbar by Robinho. “We gave up the first goal so early in second half,” United States coach Bob Bradley said. “We really put ourselves in a tough spot.”

Lucio then delivered the decisive goal in the 84th, heading a corner from Elano past Howard. “We made more use of the wings, and we scored goals,” Dunga said. Dempsey, who also scored in the 2-0 semifinal win against Spain, gave the Americans the lead in the 10th minute by redirecting a cross from Jonathan Spector. Donovan added the second by finishing off some nice passing play with Charlie Davies on a fast counterattack in the 27th. Spector started the unthinkable after only 10 minutes, running down the right and sending a low cross into the area. Dempsey, who had plenty of room to maneuver, raised his right leg and put just enough of a touch on the ball to alter the direction and send it past a diving Julio Cesar.

quick and tidy tie down, Canton logged the fastest time of the night. The 15-time NFR-qualifier said his time of 10.8 seconds wouldn’t cut it. “My horse didn’t move over behind the calf, and I got a bad go to her,” Canton said. “Usually you want it square. I should have tied that calf in some time like in the short 9s, not 10.8.” It still was enough to grab him $465 for a third-place finish. Two cowboys from Saturday’s performance logged better times. Canton and Hutto said it was their first time to Steamboat, although they weren’t passing through to ride the Alpine Slide. Instead, they were in the midst of Cowboy Christmas, the weeks surrounding Fourth of July that are filled with rodeos. Both added Steamboat into a crowded mix of appearances in hopes of qualifying for the Heartland Tour finals. They have to ride in 30 Heartland rodeos to qualify for the finals of that tour. “This is a great time of year. You can get frustrated pretty quick, but you load up and have another chance the next day,” Canton said. “In the winter, you might run two calves in a month. It’s hard to stay on top of your game, but when you’re roping every day, it’s easy to stay on top.” He said waiting in the chute at a smaller venue like Steamboat didn’t change his outlook. “This was a nice, descent-sized rodeo for this area. It had good competition, but I don’t look at it like that,” he said. “It’s always me against the calf.” In all, nearly $20,000 was awarded through the weekend at the rodeo. The Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series returns for its third weekend at 7 p.m. Friday. A fireworks show will follow the Friday and Saturday performances.

North Korea criticizes US Country denounces missile deployment around Hawaii Hyung-Jin Kim

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

North Korea criticized the U.S. on Monday for positioning missile defense systems around Hawaii, calling the deployment part of a plot to attack the regime and saying it would bolster its nuclear arsenal in retaliation. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said he ordered the deployment of a ground-based, mobile missile intercept system and radar system to Hawaii amid concerns the North may fire a long-range missile toward the islands, about 4,500 miles away. “Through the U.S. forces’ clamorous movements, it has been brought to light that the

U.S. attempt to launch a preemptive strike on our republic has become a brutal fact,” the North’s main Rodong Sinmun newspaper said in a commentary. The paper also accused the U.S. of deploying nuclear-powered aircraft and atomic-armed submarines in waters near the Korean peninsula, saying the moves prove “the U.S. pre-emptive nuclear war” on the North is imminent. The commentary, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, said the North will bolster its nuclear arsenal in self-defense. The North routinely accuses the U.S. of plotting to invade the North. But the U.S., which has

28,500 troops in South Korea, has said it has no such plan. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been running high since the North defiantly launched a rocket in April and conducted an underground nuclear test last month, prompting U.N. Security Council sanctions. North Korea responded to the U.N. resolution on the nuclear test with threats of war and pledged to expand its nuclear bomb-making program. In what could be the first test of the U.N. sanctions, an American destroyer has been tracking a North Korean ship sailing off China’s coast amid suspicions that it is carrying illicit weapons.

Crew to watch water levels Green continued from 5

water levels. Like Search and Rescue, Wall said he’ll go up to Fish Creek every day this week to continue the search on his own, as he did last week. Wall said that the Sheriff’s Office posted signs to alert visitors of Fish Creek what happened to Green. Should anyone see anything, he reminded that they should call 911 immediately instead of initiating a recovery effort of their own. He said the large rescue effort that includes Summit County crews could be rescheduled next week, but it all depends on the water level. “Maybe sooner than that,” he said. “I just don’t know.”

snowmelt and recent rain, he said. “A lot of people in the community want and need closure on this, and so do we,” he said. “But ultimately, safety is our No. 1 concern. We hope friends of the Green family will support us. It was a hard decision.” Linville said two-, threeand as many as five-person teams searched for Green in the upper falls area every other day for the past two weeks. He said that would continue sporadically until the larger search effort is rescheduled. Such an extensive search was unusual and something Search and Rescue wasn’t used to, Linville said, but they’ll continue to keep an eye on

John and Nikki’s mom, Terry Van de Velde, helped coordinate the group at the Riverside house. Marvin Lindsey, the church’s mission chairman, also painted with the youths. Another group led by Luther Berntson and Albert Deepe worked at a house on Village Lane, Lindsey said. Concordia does adult and youth mission projects in and out of town, he said. “It’s a pretty mission-minded church,” Lindsey said. “There’s always projects needing to be done, and the congregation contributes liberally to the mission.” Organizers have worked with Habitat for Humanity in the past and decided to help Horizons because the agency needed it, Lindsey said. Terry Van de Velde said her children have volunteered in the past and enjoy doing it. “They were absolutely willing,” she said. “All I had to do was wake them up and get them up this morning. They’re a great group of kids.” She said they hope to continue volunteering. “It’s been really fun,” Van de Velde said. “We enjoyed it. We hope we can do a lot more.” The gang said they didn’t mind the work despite the warm sun. “It’s actually really fun,” Nikki said. “You get to be with your friends a lot — and you get pizza.”

No concert on Saturday Strings continued from 11 even though the Youth Concert featuring Taiko With Toni at 11 a.m. is sold out, we have added an encore performance at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Taiko drumming unites percussion and dance. Toni Yagami, of Denver, will present a Japanese folktale, performing in traditional costume and playing different sizes of taiko drums, various hand percussion, bamboo flutes and the koto, a Japanese harp. At $10 for adults and $1 for children, this is a great concert for the whole family. There is no Saturday concert this week because of the holiday. Enjoy your Fourth of July.
