“If only I had known.” That thought is common to many of Dr. William Baker’s cardiology patients as they look back and realize they failed to recognize some early symptoms of their heart disease. Nationally, more than half of the people who have cardiovascular disease are diagnosed only after they have had a heart attack. Baker, a Steamboat Springs cardiologist and medical director of Yampa Valley Medical Center’s cardiovascular services, would like to lower that statistic in this region. He feels education is the key to awareness, prevention, early detection and effective treatment of this life-threatening disease. “Shortness of breath, fatigue, lightheadedness and even chronic indigestion that doesn’t get better with treatment can all be warning signs of cardiovascular disease,” Baker said. “I hear patients say, ‘I used

to hike up Howelsen Hill or walk up the steps with my laundry, but now I can’t do it, I just feel wiped out.’ People say they could do things two months ago that they can’t do now.” The most common type of cardiovascular disease is coronary artery disease, Baker said. During physical exertion, more is being demanded of the heart, which beats stronger and faster and isn’t up to the challenge. Another widespread disease is atrial fibrillation, which usually causes a rapid or irregular heartbeat. However, Baker said, sometimes people don’t feel palpitations or irregularity, so they don’t know that anything is wrong. “Shortness of breath and a light-headed feeling are often clues to atrial fibrillation,” he said. Why are symptoms such as

shortness of breath and fatigue so easily ignored? “A lot of people assume they’re having these problems because they are aging, they have put on some extra weight, or they are out of shape,” Baker said. “When we discover that the real cause is heart disease, people say, ‘I just thought I was getting older.’” Certainly not everyone who feels tired has heart disease, Baker cautioned. But a noticeable change in stamina within a few weeks or couple of months should prompt a visit to the doctor. “Many people can tell when something is just not right with their bodies,” Baker said. “We want to identify heart disease before it results in a heart See Monday Medical, page 13

We have one hybrid bus in our fleet, and it’s great. We’re working to be environmentally sustainable, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without these grant dollars.”

The ABCs of plant growth

ost of us know that our plants need water, sun, soil nutrients and warmth. But many gardeners give little thought to how the plant uses those elements to create foliage, blooms, seeds or root growth. By understanding how your garden plants grow, you’ll have a better handle on how to remedy problems in the garden when they inevitably occur. The leaves of your plant are where life-sustaining food is made. When sunlight reaches the chlorophyll in the leaves, a process called photosynthesis converts the nutrients from the soil into a form that the plant can digest. The leaves also take in carbon dioxide from the air through their pores and expel

GARDENING WITH

Deb Babcock oxygen and water vapor in a process called transpiration. This keeps the plant perky and fresh. That’s why it is important to provide your plants with adequate space in the garden. Plants that are densely packed into a space have a difficult time competing for sunlight and gaining enough air circulation to breathe and eat. Also, leaf-eating insects — such as the grasshoppers — can stunt or halt the growth of your

plants if too much of the foliage is destroyed by insects. Roots of your plants take on several duties vital to plant growth. The root hairs draw water and nutrients from the soil into the plant. You’ll find root hairs close to the surface of the soil as well as at the outermost edges of the root system. When a plant is transplanted or its root system disturbed, the fragile root hairs are easily damaged, making it difficult for the plant to draw water and nutrients up to its leaves where they are converted to a usable form. Roots also provide an anchor for your plants, especially important in the See Babcock, page 13

During tough economic times, it’s important to save a buck whenever possible. Through a unique grant offered through Colorado Mountain College, Colin McCaulley, who earned an associate’s degree before transferring to the University of Colorado at Boulder, realized some savings on his education. The 2005 Steamboat Springs High School graduate, who will be a senior next year at CU, saved about $3,500. McCaulley took advantage of the Richard C. Martin Grant. It pays forward a portion of an in-district CMC student’s tuition to a four-year college where they transfer after earning an associate’s degree. “It was a great program to get a head start to go to CU,” McCaulley said. “That’s what I wanted to do, graduate from CMC and go to a bigger school. It was a perfect companion for me.” The grant was first awarded in 1984 after Dick Martin retired, having served 14 years as a member of the college’s board of trustees. Martin originally funded the grants, but they have since been absorbed in CMC’s annual operating budget. “The idea behind it was to (motivate) our in-district traditional-aged students to attend CMC. That was the internal benefit,” said Bill Sommers, the college system’s dean of enrollment in Glenwood Springs. “Externally, it provided students and parents of students who pay taxes here a financial incentive to pay tuition forward to a state school.” To be eligible, Sommers said students must meet a few basic requirements. A student doesn’t need to be a high school graduate but must have attended high school in the CMC district where the campus they plan to attend is located. They must meet indistrict residency requirements. Students must then complete associate degree requirements within five years of enrolling at the college. See CMC, page 14

Landscaping This Summer?

The City Public Works Department would like to remind all homeowners to avoid placing large landscape materials such as berms, trees, and boulders within 10-15 feet of the street driving surface. This right-of-way area, which is typically 30 feet from the centerline of street, is used for snow storage and utility line installation. Landscape materials may damage street maintenance equipment or have to be removed because of utility work in the area. The City will not be responsible for damage to landscaping materials or irrigation systems, etc. that are placed within any public right-of-way. Your cooperation now will help the snowplow crews provide timely and cost effective snow removal service in the future, and will help utility companies avoid damage to your landscaping during excavation procedures.

COMMENTARY

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?

Now Sarah’s folly Maureen Dowd

THE NEW YORK TIMES

WASHINGTON

Sarah Palin showed Friday that, in one respect at least, she is qualified to be president. Caribou Barbie is one nutty puppy. Usually we don’t find that exquisite battiness in our leaders until they’ve been battered by sordid scandals such as Watergate (Nixon), gnawing problems such as Vietnam (LBJ), or scary threats such as biological terrorism (Cheney). Dowd When Lyndon Johnson was president, some of his staff began to think of him as “a sick man,” as Bill Moyers told Arthur Schlesinger Jr. Moyers and his fellow Johnson aide Dick Goodwin even began reading up on mental illness — Bill on manic depression and Dick on paranoia.

And so it was, Todd Purdum learned, as he traveled Alaska reporting on Palin for Vanity Fair, that the governor’s erratic and egoistic behavior has been a source of concern for people there. “Several told me, independently of one another,” Purdum writes, “that they had consulted the definition of `narcissistic personality disorder’ in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders — ‘a pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy’ — and thought it fit her perfectly.” The White House can drive its inhabitants loopy. So at least Sarah Palin is ahead of the curve on that one. As Alaskans settled in to enjoy holiday salmon bakes and the post-solstice thaw, their governor had a solipsistic meltdown so strange it made Sparky Sanford look like a model of stability. On the shore of Lake Lucille, with wildfowl honking and the First Dude

smiling, with Piper in the foreground and their Piper Cub in the background, the woman who took the Republican Party by storm only 10 months ago gave an incoherent, breathless and prickly stream of consciousness to a small group in her Wasilla yard. Gobsmacked Alaska politicians, Republican big shots, the national press, her brother, the D.C. lawyer who helped create her political action committee and yes, even Fox News, played catch-up. What looked like a secret wedding turned out to be a public unraveling as the GOP implosion continued: Sarah wanted everyone to know that she’s not having fun and people are being mean to her and she doesn’t feel like finishing her first term as governor. She can hunt wolves from the air and field-dress a moose, but she fears being a lame duck? Some brickbats about her ethics and diva turns as John McCain’s See Dowd, page 9

On terror ‘No-Fly’ list, but still buying guns Clarence Page

TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES

For gun purchasers, should “no-fly” mean “no buy?” People on the government’s terrorist watch list tried to buy guns almost 1,000 times in the past five years, a federal study finds. In nine out of 10 cases, federal authorities let them do it, the report finds, because there was no legal way to stop them. And that appears to be OK with the gun lobby, Page which sounds less fired up by the suspicious gun purchases than by Congress’ efforts to stop them. There were 963 attempts by people on the government’s “no fly” list to buy guns from licensed dealers in the past five years ending in February, accord-

ing to the Government Accountability Office report, and 865 were approved. At least one person on the watch list was able to buy explosives. At present, no one can be blocked from buying a gun just because his name is on the list. The rejections were for other reasons, such as a prior criminal conviction or illegal immigration status. Which raises a good question: If the government thinks certain people pose too much of a risk to be allowed on a plane, why are they allowed to buy firearms? Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), a longtime gun control crusader, has introduced a bill to let “no-fly” mean “no buy,” too. His bill and a similar one introduced by Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) in the House would grant authority to the attorney general to block gun sales to people on terror watch lists. That upsets the gun lobby, which

opposes terrorists yet seldom has seen a gun control measure that it didn’t hate. I’ve had more than a few quarrels with the gun lobby, but this time they’re not firing blanks, especially with their suspicions about the quality of the watch lists. The National Rifle Association, among other gun groups, opposes using the government’s watch lists because, among other problems, the lists are not reliable enough. Their point is backed up by a Justice Department inspector general’s report released in May. It found 24,000 of the 400,000 people on the watch list were listed based on outdated or irrelevant information in FBI files. Some people’s cases had been closed for years, yet their names remained on the watch list. And that’s not counting the many innocent airline passengers who have See Page, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

The maverick must run to greener pastures Dowd continued from 8 running mate, and that dewy skin turns awfully thin. Maybe there’s another red Naughty Monkey high heel to drop — there’s often a hidden twist in Sarah’s country-music melodramas. Or is this a reckless high-speed escape from small-pond Alaska, where her popularity is dropping, to the big time Below? Even some conservative analysts admitted that the governor’s move seemed ga-ga before venturing the spin that Palin might be “crazy like a fox,” as Sarah’s original cheerleader, Bill Kristol, put it. Maybe, Kristol mused, she could use the 18 months she would have spent finishing her term to write her book and study up on the issues for 2012. Why not? Palin/Sanford in 2012, with the slogan: “Save time — we’re already in Crazy Town.” Palin’s speech is classic casuistry. After girlish burbling about

how “progressing our state” and serving Alaska “is the greatest honor that I could imagine,” and raving about how much she loves her job, she abruptly announced that she was making the ultimate sacrifice: dumping the state on her lieutenant. Why “milk it,” as she put it, when you can quit it? “Only dead fish go with the flow,” she said, while cold fish can blow out of town. Leaving Alaska in the lurch is best for Alaska. She can better “effect change” in government from outside government. She can fulfill her promise of “efficiencies and effectiveness” by deserting Juneau midway through her term — and taking her tanning bed with her. “We need those who will respect our Constitution,” said Palin, who swore on the Bible to uphold the Constitution. She said she can’t fulfill that silly old oath of office in the usual way because she’s not “wired to operate under the same old

politics as usual.” Naturally, she dragged the troops in, saying that her trip to see wounded soldiers overseas “fortified” her decision to give up because “they don’t give up.” She refuses to succumb to the “politics of personal destruction.” It’s no fun unless she’s the one aiming those poison darts, as she did when she accused Barack Obama of associating “with terrorists who targeted their own country.” Sometimes, she explained, if you’re the star, you have to “call an audible and pass the ball” and leave at halftime, “so the team can win” somehow without you. The maverick must run free when greener pastures beckon. The musher must jump out of the dogsled when warmer climes call. As Palin’s spokeswoman, Meg Stapleton, says, “The world is literally her oyster.” But just remember, beloved Alaska, it’s all about you.

Gun background checks not unreasonable right was meant to apply only to members of a militia. Even so, just as there are limits on First Amendment rights for the good of the larger society (no shouting “fire” in a crowded theater, for example, unless there really is a fire), I also support background checks, waiting periods and other reasonable safeguards regarding who has access to firearms. “To deny law-abiding people due process and their Second Amendment rights based on a secret list is not how we do things in America,” said Chris W. Cox, the NRA’s chief lobbyist, in a prepared statement. He’s right that rights should not be denied. However, as much as gun purchasers may object, it is not unreasonable to hold up a gun purchase for a few days so a background check can be conducted — as long as the check is reliable enough to be worth the wait.

been stopped by airport security merely because they are unfortunate enough to have a name that is similar to someone else who is on the watch list. Among more famous “false positives” at airport security checkpoints have been Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (DMass.), former South African President Nelson Mandela, various men named David Nelson (including the former co-star of TV’s “Ozzie and Harriet”) and a number of preschool-aged children. Yet, contrary to popular belief, no one has ever been found to be on the watch list because of “mistaken identity,” according to Timothy J. Healy, director of the U.S. Terrorist Screening Center. Individuals stopped because their names were similar to those of watch-listed people, he said in a statement, “can almost always be quickly

resolved through the use of additional identifying information.” He also pointed out that most of the people on the list are not in the U.S. and that fewer than 5 percent are U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents. Identity confusion during gun purchases similarly could be resolved during the criminal background checks and waiting periods that are required during legal gun purchases — except at gun shows, which is another debate topic. Lautenberg is pushing legislation to close the gun show loophole. That reform sounds long overdue to me, especially when gun shows have reportedly become a major source for weapons in Mexico’s devastating drug war. The NRA is not all wrong. I support the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms, even though the debate continues as to whether that

Marsha Daughenbaugh, executive director of the Community Agriculture Alliance, said Heritage Family Award recipients are chosen by the Ranch Rodeo Committee. In addition to bringing a free rodeo back to Steamboat, Daughenbaugh said, “We wanted to make sure we recognized people who have been crucial in keeping ranching in this valley.” To be considered, families have to have been in the Yampa Valley for a long time and chosen to stay here to be actively involved in agriculture. The fact that her family was being chosen was successfully kept a secret from Daughenbaugh until its announcement.

“It’s an honor. It really is,” said John “Doc” Daughenbaugh, who said he and his wife have stayed in ranching because of their love for the land and the work. “Certainly more that than money. And mostly, it’s a great way to raise a family. The reason we continue it is because that’s how we wanted our children raised, and that’s how we want our grandkids raised. It’s the most fulfilling kind of life there is, and that’s what keeps us in it.” The Daughenbaughs’ ranch is about eight miles from Steamboat on Routt County Road 44. Volunteering yields a bounty of benefits Tamera Manzanares

Thanks for the help

SPECIAL TO THE PILOT & TODAY

One day per week, for the past 10 years, Betty Leipold has helped share Routt County’s history. Leipold, 82, volunteers her time at the Tread of Pioneers Museum greeting visitors and handling gift shop sales. A resident for 32 years, she is well equipped to answer questions and invite guests to learn about the region’s rich past. Leipold’s job, one of three volunteer positions she fills in the community, keeps her in touch with town happenings and also is an opportunity to meet people from across the world. “I don’t have to work, but why not do something constructive that helps out?” she said. Older volunteers such as Leipold are serving the community in myriad ways, producing benefits that often come full circle back to the volunteers themselves. “You really receive back more than you give,” explained Karen Gibson, who has volunteered as coordinator of the SHARE program in Craig for more than 10 years. The program, which provides discounted food to the community, could not operate without volunteers. Gibson’s experience has made her a believer in the power of volunteerism in strengthening individuals’ self confidence, as well as their relationships with others. “Teamwork is very important,” she said. “I just love the community building that comes out of working together for a purpose.” Helping others or working toward a community goal can provide volunteers immense personal satisfaction. Volunteers may be surprised, however, by

the profound effect that sense of accomplishment can have on their overall well-being. Studies of older adults have found volunteering has positive effects on their mental and physical health. Older volunteers have lower rates of depression, higher functional ability and tend to live longer than those who don’t volunteer, according to The Health Benefits of Volunteering, a 2007 report by the Corporation for National & Community Service. This may be why Baby Boomers, the latest generation nearing or in retirement, have the highest volunteer rate of any age group — about 33 percent. The corporation projected their volunteer numbers will increase from 9 million in 2007 to more than 13 million in 2020. There are no shortage of opportunities for older volunteers to apply their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm. Their life and work experience can be incredibly valuable to organizations juggling many tasks with limited resources. Often, volunteers follow their interests and then see where their skills or experience can be helpful. Many programs have a wide variety of needs. “We’ve had people who were pulling their oxygen tanks around while helping us,” Gibson said. “There are all kinds of jobs for all kinds of abilities.” Many organizations, including SHARE, are in need of

administrative help — promotions, Web design, etc. — but welcome any help a volunteer is willing to give. Just showing up and being enthusiastic goes a long way. It also helps to be open-minded, Gibson said. “There are those that have a preconceived way of how it should go, so sometimes they have to let that go if they want to be part of a big group,” Gibson said. In addition to exploring programs of interests, potential volunteers also can look to their existing networks, such as church groups, for suggestions about where to volunteer. Firsttime volunteers also might be more comfortable volunteering with friends or family or trying out short-term opportunities or events. There is no set amount of time a person must volunteer, though the more a person vol-

The Corporation for National & Community Service also recommends people begin volunteering while still working so that it’s easier to establish a volunteer routine into retirement. Just like any job, it can take a few tries before a person finds the right volunteer situation. The key is not to give up and to be open to new possibilities. “Sometimes we don’t take

advantage of the invitations we are given,” Gibson said. Tamera Manzanares writes for the Aging Well program and can be reached at tmanzanares@nwcovna.org or 871-7606. Some risk factors cannot be controlled waiting for the wrong sign. When a heart attack does occur, it may not feel like chest pain, Baker said. Instead, many people describe a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, pressure or tightness in the chest. Additionally, there may be pain in the neck, jaw or back, unusual areas of discomfort, nausea or sweating. “Any one of these symptoms is worrisome, and a cluster is usually a sign of a serious problem and the need for immediate medical attention,” Baker said. “But ideally, we would like to detect heart disease before it causes a heart attack. That’s why education, early detection and prevention are so important.”

highway by which nutrients and water taken by roots from the soil travel to the leaves. Stems also support the leaves, flowers, berries and fruit as well as serve as a food storage center. The flowers of your garden plant are the reproductive centers that form seeds. If you want additional plants for next year, leave the seed heads on

your plants. By deadheading as soon as the blooms are spent, you often get a second flowering and avoid cramming your garden with too many plants by having seeds sprout next spring. By knowing the job of each part of your plant, you can take steps to ensure that your plants achieve the healthy growth you desire.

attack, which can be fatal or cause irreversible damage to the heart muscle. “You need to be in touch with how you feel and be persistent if you think something is wrong,” he added. “If you’re not feeling well, get an evaluation. If you don’t feel better with treatment, be persistent and seek answers from your physician or a specialist.” Heart disease sometimes takes many years to develop. A primary cause is the buildup of cholesterol plaque inside the arteries, called atherosclerosis. This can start to develop during teenage years, Baker said. Some people can manage

their risk factors successfully by controlling their cholesterol and blood pressure, exercising regularly and watching their diet. Two risk factors that cannot be controlled are aging and family history of cardiac disease. “The older you get, the more concerned you should be,” Baker said. “And be very aware if you have a combination of risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes or a strong family history of heart disease or stroke, particularly at a younger age.” If you’re waiting to have chest pain before thinking you may have heart problems, you may be waiting too long and

H

olly McPeak insists she is not still trying to put the game of professional beach volleyball on her back. The volleyball legend said Wednesday that, since her retirement earlier this year, she no longer feels the need to campaign for the sport to grow. If you believe McPeak — and there is little reason not to — then it’s another sterling example of a professional athlete simply giving back to the game that gave her so much. Fortunately for Steamboat, part of McPeak’s giving back to the game includes mentoring 2003 Steamboat Springs High School graduate Katie Carter. Carter, who admits to idolizing McPeak for most of her life, spent a large portion of January training and learning about the game of beach volleyball with McPeak. All of that came free of cost, too. “It was just something to give back to the sport,” McPeak said. “I played beach volleyball full time for 19 years. I’ve seen the world and played in three Olympic games. I felt it’s a way to give back.” There are a lot of times — too many cases to note — when former professional athletes disappear after their career is done. But recently, it’s been easy to see two athletes, with ties to Steamboat, who still are carrying the torch for their sport. Look at the comeback by U.S. Nordic combined athlete Todd Lodwick and you’ll see a little bit of it. Certainly, Lodwick came back with Olympic dreams on his mind, but each time you talk to him, he also emphasizes how he hopes the younger Nordic skiers take his example and apply it to themselves. In McPeak, Carter found a way into the beach volleyball See Graham, page 19

It was almost a perfect plan, Linda Casner explained. In the most Steamboat of traditions, she ran with her 5-year-old golden retriever Duncan, in Sunday’s Mountain Madness Steamboat Springs Running Series race. For much of the 10-kilometer event, Duncan set the pace, even when the relative ease of the rolling terrain on River Road turned into a short but challenging stint up into the Dakota Ridge development. On the way back, however, Duncan’s pace-setting took a few hits. “It’s a gorgeous day, and I was very happy to be out running, and my trusty hound here really made it better,” Casner said afterward. “The only thing, for the last two miles along the river, (Duncan) kept wanting to jump in and cool off.” Duncan and Casner eventually made it to the finish line,

joining a record turnout for the 31st annual Fourth of July weekend race. More than 150 racers competed Sunday. The Mountain Madness featured a 1-kilometer children’s run, a 10K race and a 13.1-mile half-marathon. “We went through all the bib numbers. We ordered 150 and used them all,” race director Scott Blair said. “We had to

scramble a little.” The work paid off when the massive field, beginning from Howelsen Ice Arena, started down River Road. Much of the course proved easier than the average Running Series event. River Road doesn’t

have any of the steep sections that mark most of the other series races. The trail led into the Dakota Ridge development, where the half-marathon course wound up through the subdiviSee Madness, page 19

Inclines play big role in Sunday’s races

Maybe someday Carter will carry game but now that she’s retired, she doesn’t feel the pressure to do it. But it’s clear McPeak still cares for the game. She cares enough to take Carter and seven other indoor players and teach them her craft. So although beach volleyball might not be on McPeak’s back anymore, the sand legend still shows her love of the game. And maybe someday — and I’m sure McPeak would be excited — it will be Carter with the game on her back.

scene. The former Steamboat star admitted after playing professionally in Spain for two years, getting into beach volleyball proved a daunting task. Beach volleyball is very cliquey, she said. If you’re not known, it’s tough to get into a game. But when McPeak ran her camp and invited Carter, things instantly opened up. Carter was known as one of “Holly’s girls.” It garnered respect among the Southern California beach volleyball crowd and helped Carter start the beach

volleyball career she has always wanted. It’s already started to pay off for Carter. On Thursday, she qualified for the main draw of an AVP event for the first time in her brief career. Carter’s not sure how long she’ll compete on the AVP tour, but judging by the weekend’s results, it’s not out of the question to see her do it for a while. She admits she owes a lot to McPeak, who obviously deflects attention away from herself. McPeak admits that, even as a television commentator, she’ll still try to promote the game,

Steamboat’s without fear. “The scenery’s a lot better up here,” he said about the difference between Iowa and Steamboat. “It’s surprisingly hilly where we live, so that really helped.” That same training helped his wife, too. Anna Bergman won the women’s half-marathon with a time of 1:38:53. Meghann Loske was second at 1:43:30, and Calina Snyder was third at 1:45:40. “Apparently, I was second,” Loske, a Colorado Springs resident, said with a laugh. “I was just out there having fun. I come up to visit some friends for the Fourth. I found out about the race on Thursday and said, ‘Hey, I’ll jump in this.’”

sion while the 10K course turned around after about a half mile. It was enough to make the difference for many racers. Harry Niedle won the men’s 10K event, surging past Myles Murphy after the pair had been neck and neck for the first threequarters of the race. “I didn’t pass him until the halfway point,” Niedle said. “I finally got him on that hill, then put a little gap between us right at the Tree Haus (subdivision) entrance. I pushed it just a little and got a little gap. “I love the hills, but the guy that got second, he told me he

wasn’t ready for them.” Niedle finished in 38 minutes, 37 seconds. Jennifer Haver won the women’s 10K in 46:06, ahead of second-place finisher Hanna Schaefer at 48:09. The course’s inclines had a big effect in the half-marathon, as well. Jim Rebenack won the race in 1:21:17. Brothers Eric Bergman and Brad Bergman finished second and third, respectively, with matching times of 1:24:00. Brad Bergman, in town from Iowa visiting his brother, said that although the elevation made a bit of a difference, he had run enough Iowa hills to tackle
