Water-hogging landscaping is one of the biggest targets in a water conservation plan created by the city of Steamboat Springs and Mount Werner Water. Today, a workshop and garden tour will show people alternatives to using water on their yards. The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s Sustainable Business Program is presenting the workshop and garden tour in partnership with the Mount Werner Water and Sanitation District, the city and the Steamboat II Metropolitan District. Property managers, landscapers, irrigation professionals, business owners and homeowners are encouraged to attend. The water conservation plan

BRADEN WILSON/COURTESY

Imagine Steamboat Springs Middle School teacher Braden Wilson’s surprise when he stumbled across this man while lost in Managua, Nicaragua, earlier this summer.

Wilson said he immediately recognized the shirt, but it took his brain a while to process it. Not only was the shirt from Steamboat, but scribbled across its front in black permanent marker was the name of Taylor Dillard, an eighth-grader whom Wilson had as a student just weeks before. “There has to be a deeper significance,” Wilson said. “That’s too random.” As he tried to explain the significance of the T-shirt to the man wearing it, Wilson said the

stranger told him he bought the shirt from an American store, the equivalent of a thrift store in Nicaragua. Wilson told Taylor the story on the first day of school a few weeks ago, but Taylor had no idea how one of his old P.E. shirts found its way to Nicaragua. Wilson guessed that either Dillard’s parents donated the shirt to an organization like LIFT-UP of Routt County, or the school

Steamboat Springs Middle School Spanish teacher Braden Wilson saw something in Nicaragua last June that caught him by surprise. When Wilson found himself lost in Managua — the capital city of more than 1 million people — he rolled down the window of his car to ask for help. From a crowd of people emerged a man wearing a Steamboat Springs Middle School physical education T-shirt with the name of a current eighth-grader written on it. “It was totally surreal, bizarre, amazing,” Wilson recalled thinking. “What are the odds?” Wilson was on his way to Estelí, Nicaragua, to organize a program that sends district high school students on service trips to countries in Central America. He made a wrong turn on a one-way street and ended up in a downtown market area where people were selling everything from cell phones to cows. Like many Latin American countries, Nicaragua doesn’t have any street signs, Wilson said. So he called out to a group of 50 people to ask for directions, and the man wearing the middle school P.E. shirt came forward.

A large and diversly opinionated crowd turned out to the Steamboat Springs Community Center on Wednesday for an open house and town hall meeting to discuss the controversial and complex Steamboat 700 development project. Opinions ranged from strongly supportive to very opposed. Others said they remain undecided and used Wednesday’s event as an opportunity to learn more about the project that proposes about 2,000 residences and 380,000 square feet of commercial space on U.S. Highway 40 just west of current city limits. “That’s why I’m here — to educate myself,” resident Mike Gilbert said. Gilbert said he has concerns about the project but also thinks it could be good for the local economy by providing the housing infrastructure necessary to attract companies and jobs. “Nobody disputes this is a great place to live,” Gilbert said. “The only thing people do dispute is that it’s so economically challenging.” Jack White, president of the Community Alliance of the Yampa Valley, said the organization also is undecided. He said the Community Alliance generally is supportive of the project because it is modeled after the West of Steamboat Springs Area Plan but that there are still too many unanswered questions on subjects such as water, revenue neutrality and traffic. Others were unequivocal in their views. Resident Greg

Rawlings said the project “scares me to death.” Others said the alternative is the true horror. “We economically gate ourselves if we don’t move forward with this project,” said resident Curtis Church, formerly of the Yampa Valley Housing Authority. Many questions were asked Wednesday about what happens if the city doesn’t annex Steamboat 700 or if it is annexed but the developer is unable, financially, to bring the project to fruition. Tom Leeson, the city of Steamboat Springs’ planning and community development director, said that if Steamboat 700 is denied, the community should reassess 15 years of community planning that have directed growth westward. Steamboat 700 Principal and Project Manager Danny Mulcahy said the 487-acre parcel wouldn’t sit as open space if annexation is denied and most likely would be developed as 35-acre lots. Both said the city would lose a financial partner to help mitigate the impacts of growth that may come one way or the other. “They are certainly contributing a lot of money for highway improvements,” Leeson said. “Without Steamboat 700, we have not really identified a longterm plan for highway improvements.”

Some at Wednesday’s event said they fear that if the city annexes Steamboat 700 and the developer goes under, the city will be left with challenges similar to those that exist in Stagecoach, where thousands of lots are platted without the infrastructure necessary to serve them. City and Steamboat 700 officials said a more sophisticated planning process has produced an annexation agreement that doesn’t allow for buildable lots to be platted until the infrastructure necessary to serve them is in place. Several questions were asked about Steamboat 700’s affordable housing plan, which calls for the developer to dedicate 12.5 acres to the city and institute a 0.5 percent real estate transfer tax within the development. Some were skeptical that the plan would result in 20 percent of housing in the development being deed restricted for sale to residents and families that earn 80 percent of the See Steamboat 700, page 11

The cost to purchase a ticket for the Yampa River Rubber Ducky Race — $10 — hasn’t changed since its first year in 1988. But a number of things have. During that first event — which has become the annual fundraiser sponsored by the

Yampa Valley Medical Center’s Auxiliary — organizers hoped to sell 500 tickets and raise $5,000. This year, they hope to raise $20,000 to $30,000 by selling more than 2,000 rubber duckies for the 10 a.m. Saturday race down the Yampa, said Sandie See Rubber Ducky, page 13

COMMENTARY

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?

Less Spocky, more Rocky Maureen Dowd

THE NEW YORK TIMES

As soon as I started covering Barack Obama, I knew he was going to be trouble. Not Global Trouble, like W. and Dick Cheney. Or Hanky-Panky Trouble, like Bill Clinton and John Edwards. Or Tedious Trouble, like John Kerry and Michael Dukakis. He was going to be the kind of guy who whipped you up and then, when you were all excited, left Dowd you flat, and then, when you were deflated and exasperated and time was running out, ensorcelled you again with some sparkly fairy dust. It’s an irritating pattern. Not as puerile as Bill Clinton’s pattern of wasting time and plunging into personal chaos, or as horrifying as Dick Cheney’s routine of

bullying and cutting paper dolls out of the Constitution. After keeping his great powers of persuasion and elucidation under wraps all summer, the president at long last comes forward to explain his health care plan to an utterly confused and increasingly skeptical and wary public. He should have done this speech back in June and conjured up a better glossary. You can’t combat a scintillating term like “death panels” with a somnambulant one like “public option.” President Obama is so wrapped up in his desire to be a different, more conciliatory, beer-summit kind of leader, he ignores some verities. Sometimes, when you’ve got the mojo, you have to keep your foot on your opponent’s neck. When you’re trying to get a Sisyphean agenda passed, it’s good if people in the way — including rebellious elements in your own party — fear you. Civil discourse is fine, but when the

other side is fighting dirty, you should get angry. Don’t let the bully kick sand in your face. The White House should have impaled death panel malarkey as soon as it came up. By the time the president got feisty in a speech on Monday, the inmates had taken over cable TV, much like the spooky spirits swarming up over Bald Mountain in “Fantasia.” Even Steve Hildebrand, the strategist who helped shape Obama’s historic win in the Iowa caucuses, complains that his former hero “needs to be more bold in his leadership.” Disenchanted at Obama’s disengaged approach on health care and gay rights, Hildebrand told Politico’s Ben Smith that he was “losing patience.” It was one thing for Obama to delegate freely when he was on the Harvard Law Review, but it’s madness to go play golf and delegate freely to Congress, letting Nancy Pelosi make your case. After See Dowd, page 9

Our 1-party democracy Thomas Friedman THE NEW YORK TIMES

Watching the health care and climate/ energy debates in Congress, it is hard not to draw the following conclusion: There is only one thing worse than one-party autocracy, and that is one-party democracy, which is what we have in America today. One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today, it also can have Friedman great advantages. That one party can just impose the politically difficult but critically important policies needed to move a society forward in the 21st century. It is not an accident that China is committed to overtaking us in electric cars, solar power, energy efficiency, batteries,

nuclear power and wind power. China’s leaders understand that in a world of exploding populations and rising emerging-market middle classes, demand for clean power and energy efficiency is going to soar. Beijing wants to make sure that it owns that industry and is ordering the policies to do that, including boosting gasoline prices, from the top down. Our one-party democracy is worse. The fact is, on the energy/climate legislation and health care legislation, only the Democrats really are playing. With a few notable exceptions, the Republican Party is standing, arms folded and saying “no.” Many of them just want President Barack Obama to fail. Such a waste. Obama is not a socialist; he’s a centrist. But if he’s forced to depend entirely on his own party to pass legislation, he will be whipsawed by its different factions. Look at the climate/energy bill that came out of the House. Its sponsors had to work twice as hard to produce this

breakthrough cap-and-trade legislation. Why? Because with basically no GOP representatives willing to vote for any price on carbon that would stimulate investments in clean energy and energy efficiency, the sponsors had to rely entirely on Democrats — and that meant paying off coal-state and agriculture Democrats with pork. Thank goodness, it still is a bill worth passing. But it could have been much better — and can be in the Senate. Just give me eight to 10 Republicans ready to impose some price on carbon, and they can be leveraged against Democrats who want to water down the bill. The only way for us to match them is by legislating a rising carbon price along with efficiency and renewable standards that will stimulate massive private investment in clean-tech. Hard to do with a one-party democracy. The same is true with health care. “The See Friedman, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

Dowd continued from 8 signaling that there was nothing he’d fall on his sword for on health care; after dropping Van Jones at the first objection from Glenn Beck — a demagoon who called Obama a “racist” — the president is getting to be seen as an easy mark. In the absence of more vivid presidential leadership, the Democrats have reverted to their old DNA — self-destructive scrapping and spending. And the Republicans are sticking to theirs — being mean-spirited and shameless, attacking big government spending while taking no blame for their own. Just as he let Hillary Clinton breathe new life into her faltering campaign in New Hampshire, Obama let the moribund Republicans reviv-

ify themselves in the slashing image of Limbaugh and Palin. Administration officials have been chortling that Republicans overreached in criticizing the president for giving a speech urging kids to study hard, write their own destiny and wash their hands. It’s true that Republicans who objected looked risible. On MSNBC, Joe Watkins, a GOP strategist, explained the perils of letting “one of the most gifted speakers that the world has ever seen” speak to impressionable children. What if next time, he asked, the president made a strong argument to kids about the Defense of Marriage Act? “What if,” he wondered, “kids come back home and say to their mom and dad, when the president who they like and who they

agree with, tells them marriage is not necessarily between a man and a woman?” But if such Republicans seem loco, and the far left looks easily outmaneuvered, the president seems lame, too, for letting the crazies and uglies get on offense all summer, showcased by a superficial media beast. It shouldn’t take a superhuman effort by the Democrats, with an assist from a Republican former first lady, to beat back the most obviously nutty, stupid things that Republicans say. The president told students on Tuesday that “being successful is hard” and “you won’t necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try.” He should take his own words to heart. He can live long and prosper by being less Spocky and more Rocky.

Hard to get a good plan without GOP votes Friedman continued from 8 central mechanism through which Obama seeks to extend coverage and restrain costs is via new ‘exchanges,’ insurance clearinghouses, modeled on the plan Mitt Romney enacted when he was governor of Massachusetts,” noted Matt Miller, a former Clinton budget official and author of “The Tyranny of Dead Ideas.” “The idea is to let individuals access group coverage from private insurers, with subsidies for low earners.” And it is possible the president will seek to fund those subsidies, at least in part, with the idea John McCain ran on — by reducing the tax exemption for employer-provided health care.

Can the Republicans even say yes to their own ideas, if they are absorbed by Obama? Without Obama being able to leverage some Republican votes, it is going to be very hard to get a good plan to cover all Americans with health care. The GOP used to be the party of business. Well, to compete and win in a globalized world, no one needs the burden of health insurance shifted from business to government more than American business. No one needs immigration reform more than American business. No one needs a push for cleantech more than American business. Yet the GOP today resists national health care, immigration reform and wants to just

drill, baby, drill. “Globalization has neutered the Republican Party, leaving it to represent not the have-nots of the recession but the havenots of globalized America, the people who have been left behind either in reality or in their fears,” said Edward Goldberg, a global trade consultant who teaches at Baruch College. “The need to compete in a globalized world has forced the meritocracy, the multinational corporate manager, the eastern financier and the technology entrepreneur to reconsider what the Republican Party has to offer. In principle, they have left the party, leaving behind not a pragmatic coalition but a group of ideological naysayers.”

Moffat County High School students discuss president’s message GRAIG DAILY PRESS

CRAIG

President Barack Obama’s education-themed speech didn’t seem to hit home with many of the students in Joy Tegtman’s third-period criminology class at Moffat County High School. After viewing the recorded speech during Wednesday’s class, Tegtman asked her students to share their opinions about the speech.

“He could have said more,” said Sarah Gillespie, 17. “He could have given us more ideas. My mom could have told me that stuff.” High school students watched the speech as a part of social studies class Wednesday, a day after the speech aired. The delay was so school staff could record the speech and set up projectors in the classrooms. The speech created controversy in the days leading up to it when some parents wrote and called

their schools, saying it was inappropriate to show the speech to children. Joe Petrone, Moffat County School District superintendent, said there were several parents who called in because they did not want Obama speaking to their students. Petrone and administrators decided to send home permission slips with elementary and middle school students to allow parents to opt out of the lesson surrounding the speech and its contents.

Steamboat 700 to hold breakfast today Steamboat 700 continued from 4 area median income, which is the standard called for in the West of Steamboat Springs Area Plan. Leeson said the city is relying on projections it has developed showing that the land contribution and transfer tax proceeds will give the city the resources it needs to be meet that standard. Wednesday’s open house and town hall meeting served as an introduction to the city’s final round of annexation hear-

ings, which begin today when the Steamboat Springs Planning Commission will receive a presentation on and discuss the overall annexation. The Planning Commission will make a recommendation to City Council on Sept. 17. City Council is scheduled to consider the first and second readings of the annexation ordinances on Sept. 29 and Oct. 13, respectively. Leeson asked those in attendance Wednesday to stay involved. “We encourage you all to come down and make com-

ments,” he said. “It’s important.” Also today — and every Thursday until the Oct. 13 vote — Steamboat 700 will hold a free breakfast at 8:15 a.m. at The Egg & I restaurant for anyone interested in discussing the development. A similar breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. Friday at Steamboat 700’s offices on the second floor of the Chieftain Building at Lincoln Avenue and Fourth Street. — To reach Brandon Gee, call 367-7507 or e-mail bgee@steamboatpilot.com

ities must be built to handle the highest demands they will face on a “peak day.” According to the proposed conservation plan, the average peak-day demand from 2004 to 2007 was 550 gallons per person per day. Outdoor irrigation use of water is twice indoor use in the summer. The city and Mount Werner Water district estimate that the conservation plan could defer the cost of building new $4 million filtration bays. Every gallon saved, according to the plan, postpones $1 or more toward a new filtration bay. The plan recommends guidelines such as no outdoor watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., discouraging water-intensive landscapes and encouraging the use of native grasses and shrubs. In dry years or drought situations, the plan recommends more restrictive measures. — To reach Brandon Gee, call 367-7507 or e-mail bgee@steamboatpilot.com

Top prize is free Steamboat Ski Area pass

Fair continued from 6 “We weren’t setting goals to beat each other,” she said. “It just seemed probably normal. It didn’t really seem like we were competing each other at all, we were just riding with each other, happy for each other.” Lausanne is home-schooled, Mackenzie is in eighth grade at Christian Heritage School and Alexis attends Steamboat Springs Middle School. The girls do 4-H but aren’t always around one another. Jocelyne Hillmuth, Lausanne’s mother, said that was part of why their cooperation was noteworthy. “They’re not naturally together all the time, so that to me stands out the most, how impressive that was when obviously you go to state fair to be competitive, and amongst all that, those girls came together as a team,” she said. Alexis won the gymkhana competition, partly because of her 15.34-second barrel racing run. That beat the times in every age group, from 8 to 18, said her mother, Maribeth Len. “I kind of knew it was pretty fast,” Alexis said. “My pattern felt really good, and we just blew through it.” She said it was fun to compete alongside the other girls. “We worked really well together,” Alexis said. “We all are really good friends, and even

though we do totally different things, we’re still helping out each other, and it’s really fun.” Mackenzie’s experience was a bit nerve-racking for her mother, Lani Holmberg said. She was tallying the points and watching nervously as her daughter competed. Mackenzie wound up ahead of the boy she lost to last year, which added to the excitement, Jocelyne Hillmuth said. Mackenzie didn’t have much to say about that, instead praising the other riders. “I ended up winning first, and I was really excited because there’s definitely really good people down there,” she said. The girls celebrated their trio of champion belt buckles with junk food and rides on the mid-

way at the fairgrounds. The State Fair 4-H competition is open to Level 2 riders and above, and the skill scale goes up to Level 4. The girls said they planned to compete at state again. Mackenzie urged others to give it a try. If a young rider is uncertain, she said, he or she could go down and just watch one year to see how it goes. “I would just say do what you think you can do,” Mackenzie said. “I mean, if you’re a little hesitant going down, I would just wait a year or wait a few months or so and work on getting really good, so that when you go down there you’re confident.” — To reach Blythe Terrell, call 871-4234 or e-mail bterrell@steamboatpilot.com

The prize remains the same, but it’s monetary value certainly has changed — from $390 in 1988 to about $1,000 today. Christine McKelvie, the hospital’s public relations director, still remembers that first race. “It just really took off and people really embraced this event,” she said. This year’s version starts at the Fifth Street Bridge, where all the rubber duckies will be dumped into the river. The first ducky to make it past the finish line at the 13th Street bridge wins. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the hospital’s new Cardiac Care Services, including wellness, education, community outreach and diagnostic services. 40 YEARS OF SEARCH AND RESCUE

STEAMBOAT TODAY

Search and Rescue’s annual fundraiser takes place at 5:30 p.m. Friday Search continued from 1 Steamboat and rushed frantically to gather people, sleds, snowshoes, skis and gear. But it took far too long on a Sunday afternoon. “We then realized the problems we were facing if somebody got in trouble like that,” Satre said. And so began Routt County Search and Rescue.

Group, mission grows The initial group of backwoods men had only about six members for its first couple of years in operation. And they had only a few calls a year to respond to, Satre said. “Back in those days, it was really search and not rescue,” he said. “Those of us that really studied the woods were invaluable.” Chuck Vale, another of the group’s early members, said it became apparent that local fire departments weren’t able to handle the increasing number of people skiing and snowmobiling in the backcountry in the 1970s. “The fire departments at the time … did most of what we called then rescue, but it had become apparent as more and more people were in the backcountry, especially in the wintertime, that the sheriff had no ability to get a group to go help,” he said. The number of calls, and the scope of the missions handled by the Search and Rescue crew, evolved in the mid-’70s. It led the group to change from a winter-only operation to a yearround, always-on-call organization. Forty years later, Routt County Search and Rescue has about 30 volunteer members, each required to attend regular trainings and participate in at least a quarter of the 50 or so missions the group now responds to each year. Ten-year member Greg Hughey joined the all-volunteer force after a scare of his own. Cross-country skiing on Rabbit Ears Pass in 1997, Hughey became disoriented in blowing snow. Before long, he found himself at the top of Mount Werner looking at the sun-baked and concrete-hard face of Storm Peak. He started down, but after one quick turn his knee twisted on the hard trail and gave way. Hughey used his brick-sized cell phone to call for help, and Search and Rescue members training at the base of the mountain jumped on snowmobiles to come to his aid. That’s when he knew he would have to join the group.

If you go Routt County Search and Rescue’s annual fundraiser is from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at Olympian Hall at Howelsen Hill Lodge. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from any Search and Rescue member or at Ski Haus. The event will include a silent auction, music, food and door prizes. The largest door prize is a 2009-10 season pass from Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. If the winner has already purchased a season pass for the year, Ski Corp. has agreed to refund the price. Copper Mountain Resort officials generally side-stepped the subject of a potential resort sale during an annual state of the resort presentation Saturday, saying only that they would share any news about a deal as soon as they can. “It’s the elephant in every room right now. ... It’s no secret. We’re going through challenging refinancing issues. The credit market is as tight as it was eight months ago,” said Copper Mountain president and chief operating officer Gary Rodgers. Rodgers said he’s been part of the discussions about a potential sale and added that Intrawest has some new financing options that weren’t available eight months ago. But he stayed mum on any other details about possible suitors. “Right now, there’s really no news I can share with you on that front. I will share that news with you before you read it in the paper,” he said to several hundred property owners assembled at the resort conference center. Rodgers also chided the Summit Daily News for running a story about a potential sale of the resort that was based in part on questionable sources, including an unattributed blurb on a ski resort news Web site. The story also cited several sources at the resort, including independent merchants, condo owners, shop employees and others, who all reported hearing the same

stories about potential buyers. In previous attempts to report on the possible sale of the resort, all questions were referred to a corporate Intrawest spokesman in Vancouver, Ian Galbraith, who recently said in a Summit Daily story that Intrawest is always looking for ways to “enhance the value” of its resorts. Rodgers went on to outline the problems Copper faced in the past season and the challenges ahead. “About a year ago, things were rosy. ... Then, storm clouds appeared on the horizon,” he said, referring to last autumn’s financial meltdown and the subsequent recession. He then obliquely referred to Intrawest staff cuts by citing “tough decisions” the resort had to make. Copper was rocked by a couple of waves of layoffs, especially among mid-level managers. But the resort tried to make sure the guest experience wasn’t affected, Rodgers said. “We decided to do everything in our power to protect our core products. We focused on not cutting anything from services,” he said. The resort saw great snowfall — 320 inches last season — and spent more than ever on grooming, he added.

Copper quiet on skier visits Rodgers didn’t reveal Copper’s skier-visit numbers for last season. Most local areas saw skier visits drop by 5 to 10 percent, though some smaller areas boomed. Loveland had its best season based on skier visit num-

bers, and Arapahoe Basin had its second-best year. Copper execs passed on a mixed message about skier visits last winter. They acknowledged that Vail Resorts’ five-mountain epic pass diverted skiers from Summit to Eagle County but also said Copper managed to take the biggest individual slice of the Front Range pie. Rodgers said summer conference business helped as well as could be expected. The resort hopes to see growth in summer business with more events such as concerts and bike racing, along with summer camps at Woodward. Rodgers also said Copper met its energy saving goals cutting electricity use by 8 percent, natural gas use by 9 percent and diesel fuel use by 7 percent. Also on the environmental front, Rodgers said Copper cut its contracts for renewable energy credits. “We’re struggling with whether they are worth it,” Rodgers said, explaining that it’s not a permanent decision. Instead, the resort will invest resources in local projects with what he characterized as “immediate and lasting impacts,” by retrofitting lighting at the resort with energy-saving bulbs for example. Rodgers said Copper may be just weeks or days away from getting final approval on a plan to expand parking at the Corn Lot, on the east side of Colorado Highway 91. Some work on that project could begin this fall or next spring at the latest, he said.

The Steamboat Springs High School boys tennis team found a range of performances Wednesday in a home dual against Air Academy, with the Sailors turning in efforts dominant and gutty, and all strong. It was enough to power the squad to victories in six of the day’s seven matches and set the stage for one of the most challenging weekends of the season. “This is what we needed,” Steamboat coach John Aragon said. “Air Academy is a good, solid 5A program, a well-coached team, and to get a win like we did was huge for our program.” At the top of the card, Steamboat found its dominance. No. 1 singles player Jamey Swiggart quickly dispatched Alex Kent, winning in two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Keegan Burger, playing in the No. 2 singles slot, was similarly effective. He struggled a little in the first set but surged in the second, winning, 6-4, 6-0, against Stuart White. Steamboat also got a two-set win from its No. 3 doubles team of Callum Richman and Luke Farney. The pair defeated Grant Voyen and Jeff Milliman, 6-1, 7-5. It wasn’t all so easy, though, and Steamboat picked up tough wins at No. 3 singles and No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The longest match of the day came as Steamboat’s Mirko Erspamer outlasted Kollen Kaltenbacher, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3. Erspamer had control of the match and seemed to have Kaltenbacher on his final legs. The Steamboat junior was up 5-4 in the second set and faced two match-point opportunities. He couldn’t close it out, however, venting his frustration as a large crowd gathered. Erspamer squandered the See Tennis, page 22

the tournament that featured 86 varsity golfers from 22 Colorado high schools. But Gunderson is a perfectionist, and he thought his 71 could have — or should have

— been a 66. “I was disappointed in parts of it,” said Gunderson, who carded five birdies and four bogies on Wednesday. “It’s just that I had a little higher expectations. It’s my course, and I was hoping to go a little lower. I had some missed opportunities.” Nonetheless, his round coupled with the efforts of teammates Scott Ptach and Alan Capistron was good enough to See Golf, page 23

Seth Smith hit a two-out, tworun single in the ninth inning to give the surging Colorado Rockies a 4-3 win against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. Colorado won its sixth consecutive game and extended its National League WEDNESDAY’S wild-card lead to GAME: four against San Rockies 4 Francisco, which Reds 3 lost 4-2 to San Diego. Clint Barmes started the winning rally with a one-out double off All-Star closer Francisco Cordero (2-5). Pinch-hitters Jason Giambi and Ryan Spilborghs then walked before Cordero struck out Carlos Gonzalez to bring Smith to the plate. Smith fouled off four balls before lining a base hit off second baseman Brandon Phillips to drive in Barmes and pinchrunner Jason Marquis. Smith’s hit rescued the Rockies after they blew a 20 lead in the eighth inning. Darnell McDonald and pinchhitter Kevin Barker had RBI doubles and Scott Rolen put Cincinnati in front with a leadoff homer in the ninth, his second with the Reds. Jason Hammel pitched 7 1/3 innings for the Rockies, allowing two runs and three hits. He retired 20 of 21 batters after Paul Janish’s one-out double in the first. Matt Daley (1-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the Rockies, getting the win despite allowing Rolen’s homer. The Rockies took the lead in the third. Eric Young Jr. and Gonzalez led off with singles to put runners at the corners and Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to center. Gonzalez stole second, moved to third on Todd Helton’s fly to right and scored on Garrett Atkins’ single to center. Bronson Arroyo gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings for Cincinnati.

Whether it truly was a firstof-its-kind performance is still undetermined. But it certainly stole the show last weekend during a disc golf tournament on the Thunderhead Disc Golf Course at Steamboat Ski Area. Many disc golf players have hit holes-in-one, and some have hit two per round. “I hit two in one round 10 years ago,” local disc golfer Ron Pannesi said Wednesday. But back-to-back aces in a tournament? “The research is still ongoing to see if it’s ever happened,” said Pannesi, the winner and director of the second annual Steamboat Open. “But still, it’s safe to say it was amazing and unprecedented.” The two-hole highlight reel was courtesy of Erie disc golfer Mitch Sonderfan. Pannesi said the three-round tournament was an “absolute huge” success, drawing more participants and top competition than the inaugural event in 2008. Pannesi, however, might be a bit biased when asked about what kind of weekend it was.

Although Sonderfan shocked the crowd with his course-record 13-under par and back-to-back aces in the second round, Pannesi dominated the course that he designed en route to capturing the Men’s Open championship. “It was awesome because even after he put on that onslaught, I

still came back and beat him overall and won first place,” Pannesi said. Pannesi shot the lowest score of the first round, finishing three shots better than anyone else. He slipped one shot behind Sonderfan after the course-record round, then surged back to take the lead in the third and final round, finishing 22-under par and up by one shot.

Cross-country tackles Fossil Ridge SPORTS BRIEFS

For an opening meet, it had a state-like feel. Competing at the Fossil Ridge Invitational on Saturday against most of the rest of the state, the Steamboat Springs High School cross-country team got an early indicator of what the season might have in store. “It was just a feeling-out meet,” Steamboat coach Andy Reust said. “It was a good indicator of where we are and where we need to be. It gives us an idea of where we think the kids are.” With only four boys and two girls making the trip, Reust said

game and the set, but not the match. He roared back in the third and final frame, winning two of the first three games. Given another opportunity, he slammed the door. “That guy was tough. He hit a lot of balls and made Mirko work,” Aragon said. “He had to grind out that win. That’s his style, and that’s why he’s 5-0.” The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams had similar lapses but also managed to pull out victories. Jeff Lambert and Jack Burger beat Brandon Kuzara and Nick Nelson despite giving up the second set after leading it 4-1. The Steamboat pair went on to win, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Vladen Chase and Max Rodes, meanwhile, had their stumble in the first set against Alex Littleton and Chris Pace. They lost 4-6 but cruised in the next two, winning 6-2, 6-4. “We got ourselves in a hole but fought back,” Chase said. “We just had a little slump.” “We put more balls in play and just dominated that second set,” Rodes added. Steamboat’s only loss on the day came in another threeset match. The No. 4 doubles team of Kyle Rogers and Gabri Erspamer fell to Sam Walker and Kent Schaller, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 4-6. “Air Academy probably had

the toughest teams in doubles we’ve played all year,” Aragon said. “They were good players.” The team will play today

at Fruita, then Friday and Saturday at the Western Slope Open, facing some of the top teams at the Grand Junction tournament.

Area golf courses switch to shoulder-season rates

Rates for locals with a Routt County driver’s license are $75 for 18 holes before 2 p.m. and $65 for 18 holes after 2 p.m. Both rates include a cart and range balls. The rate runs until the end of the season, which, depending on the weather, is expected to be the third week of October. Rates for residents at Haymaker Golf Course will remain the same. It’s $48 for 18 holes, $31 for nine holes and $37 for twilight rates. Twilight begins after 3 p.m. Steamboat Golf Club rates decrease on Monday. The cost will be $20 for nine holes and $30 for 18 holes.

he was pleased with the results. Junior Jack Burger led the way on the 5K course with a time of 17 minutes, 59.3 seconds. Gus Allen was right with him at 17:59.40, and Asher Rohde finished in 18:49 and Scott Powers came in at 20:14. On the girls side, Erika Walters led the Sailors with a time of 25:57. Anne Poirot came in at 28:00. The race took place on the same course the state meet will be held on. Because of that, the field was huge, attracting 213 boys and 183 girls competing in Class 4A. Reust said the real indicator

for his team will be with how it progresses as the season moves forward. Different courses also make it difficult to judge progression. “Until I see the course and what it’s like, it’s hard for me to have expectations,” Reust said. “It’s not like a track meet, where a track is a track. There are a lot of variables in cross-country.” The team resumes action at 9 a.m. Saturday at Douglas County.

“He missed a couple putts and wasn’t playing as hot, and I was just ripping it up. I was up by five,” Pannesi said. “Then I fourputted the second-to-last hole. It was a knee-knocker at the end for sure.”

Pannesi wasn’t the only local to find success in the 64-player field. Despite facing a talented field of players from across the state, Steamboat players won in six of the seven divisions. Jason Ruemelin won the advanced men’s division by two shots. Drea Schoenberger won the

advanced women’s division by six shots, defending her 2008 title. Scott Howland captured his second consecutive advanced masters title by a comfy 10 shots. Todd Campbell won the intermediate class by four, and Benjamin Warren took a one-shot victory in the recreational division.

give Steamboat a tie for second place with a team score of 234. Battle Mountain and Montrose also scored 234, but Battle Mountain’s Cameron Brown birdied a playoff hole to give the Huskies the win. For the Sailors, Ptach shot 84, Capistron shot 81, Skyler Martin shot 82 and Ty Hvambsal had to withdraw because of injury. “I think we’re all a little disappointed,” Steamboat coach Steve Dodson said. “I was pleased we tied in first. They had off days, and we had an off day. But I felt we were ready to play.” Gunderson certainly came out ready to play. He birdied No. 1 and had pars on the next two holes before hitting a rough patch. Thanks to a three-putt on No. 4, a bad pitch on No. 5, and a penalty stroke on No. 6, Gunderson was 2-over-par through six holes. But he bounced back with birdies on numbers 9 and 11. He missed a five-footer on No. 12 for birdie and bogeyed No. 14 before finishing with birdies on 16 and 18. But when he looks back on his round, he certainly felt there were strokes to be had. The five-footer on 12, the par on No. 13 — a hole he called one of the easiest to birdie — and his bogey No. 14 all could have been different. Add in his two near eagles on numbers 9 and 18, and

Gunderson said his round could have been much lower. “I’m feeling good though,” Gunderson said. “My game is better than it’s ever been right now. I just need to hopefully make some putts. For regionals I hope I play some of these holes smarter.” Ptach and Capistron each had rough days. Ptach, who typically shoots in the low to mid-70s, couldn’t get it going on the front nine. He had a triple-bogey on No. 8, and double bogeys on Nos. 9 and 18. Capistron, another consistent 70s player, had a birdie on No. 17 to go with eight bogeys. “It was just a rough day,” Ptach said. “You have to get one of those out of the way. It’s one of those things where it wasn’t clicking.” The Sailors don’t have much time to think about their rounds, as they head to Moffat

County today. With the regional tournament Sept. 22 at Haymaker, Dodson said he expects the team will round into form in the next two weeks. He said come that day, he expects Battle Mountain, Cortez, Montrose and Steamboat again to battle for the one guaranteed team position to state. “I still like our chances being on our home course,” he said. “I still like where we are with our games. The guys are practicing hard. Getting this one out of the way — it might be a good thing.”

Plane hijacked in Mexico All passengers and crew released from jetliner unharmed Mark Stevenson

9-9-09 — is the satanic number 666 turned upside down. Flores, speaking to reporters after he was detained, said he took control of the aircraft with “a juice can ... with some little lights I attached.” “Christ is coming soon,” he added, smiling. As the plane was landing, Flores stood up and showed his contraption to a flight attendant, Garcia Luna said. He ordered the pilot to circle over Mexico City seven times and asked to speak with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

A Bolivian religious fanatic briefly hijacked a jetliner from the beach resort of Cancun as it landed in Mexico City on Wednesday, police said. All passengers and the crew were released unharmed. The Bible-carrying hijacker used a juice can he said was a bomb to hold the 103 passengers and crew on the tarmac for more than an hour. Masked police stormed the aircraft with guns drawn and escort-

ed several handcuffed men away without firing a shot. Police later said there was only one hijacker, and the other men aboard were detained because the suspect had told a flight attendant he had three accomplices. The others were quickly released. Jose Flores, 44, later told police his three companions were “the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.” Flores hijacked Aeromexico Flight 576 after a divine revelation, according to Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna. Flores said Wednesday’s date —

donated it after collecting clothing that was left behind at the end of a school year. Wilson said he doubted the shirt could have moved that quickly and thought it may have been Dillard’s P.E. shirt from his sixth-grade year. Deborah Improta, a manager at the LIFT-UP thrift store, said it’s not uncommon for them to

pass along items they receive if the store doesn’t believe it can sell them or if the items are out of season. Improta also said it’s not uncommon for LIFTUP volunteers to take donated clothes and toys on mission trips to other countries. In the past, she said customers have purchased items specifically to donate when they go on trips to foreign countries.

Wilson recalled that the man wearing the middle school Tshirt got a kick out of hearing the story. “He kind of chuckled. He was kind of happy,” Wilson said. “I remember his final words were, ‘It’s a small world.’ I started laughing.” — To reach Jack Weinstein, call 871-4203 or e-mail jweinstein@steamboatpilot.com
