cle spokes, some thick rubber straps, a small battery and some heavy-duty tubing, a finished version of the sculpture would have several moving parts and would use bouncing rubber balls to produce musical notes indefinitely. It’s a hefty project, one Potyen’s long-latent background in mechanical engineering has imagined for about 15 years.

“I’ve probably put in a couple hundred hours on it, and I’m not sure I’m going to have it done in time,” Potyen said. The sculpture meshes his love for art projects — in addition to pieces of the Creative Community sculpture, Potyen’s driveway boasts a colorful tarantula made from old satellite dish parts — with his profession as a piano player and

music teacher. Potyen is one of six local artists or community groups scheduled to participate in Creative Community. The project began in 2008 and was based on a similar contest at a salvage yard in San Francisco, said Stacy Weinberg, salvage yard manager for Home ReSource. See ReSource, page 13
