Correction The PostNet store in the 1600 block of Mid Valley Drive offers U.S. Postal Service products and services at an increased price as a convenience for its customers. A Postal Service spokesman said the products and services were offered at the store for the same price as the post office, and that information was incorrectly reported in a story on page 1A of Sunday’s Steamboat Pilot & Today.

The culmination of two years of review begins tonight when the Steamboat Springs City Council gives preliminary consideration to a collection of ordinances and resolutions annexing Steamboat 700. Ever since Steamboat 700 submitted its preliminary plans to the city in November 2007, the development has been subject to an exhaustive analysis by government officials and the community. Questioning of the proposed annexation will continue tonight, and likely topics include water, affordable housing, traffic and taxes. And after two years of negotiation and review, city staff and the developer are sure to be prepared with answers. But one big question can’t be answered by a fiscal impact model, nexus study or spreadsheet: Is Steamboat ready for it? At 487 acres and with a proposal for 2,000 homes and 380,000 square feet of commercial space, some say Steamboat 700 would be a city within a city. There is little doubt the city’s marriage to Steamboat 700 would alter See Steamboat 700, page 13

One man was killed, and a second person was injured in a head-on collision near Toponas on Monday afternoon. Emergency responders were called to the accident at about 5:15 p.m., and crews freed one of the trapped victims from a car at about 5:45 p.m. One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said the identity of the man was still unknown at 8:15 p.m. Ryg said he was in the process of transporting the

man’s body to Yampa Valley Funeral Home. The man was driving a silver Honda coupe southbound on Colorado Highway 131 when it collided with a Ford minivan traveling the opposite direction, Ryg said. The man who died was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Colorado State Patrol troopers were still on scene investigating the accident late Monday night, and the highway was closed for several hours as crews worked at the scene. Motorists were diverted on Routt County Road 6 during that time.

Rio Blanco County search and rescue teams used a helicopter to extract the man before Routt County Search and Rescue volunteers could reach the remote area. The condition of the man wasn’t available Monday evening.

Steamboat Springs Middle School Principal Tim Bishop thought his school had dodged a bullet. Then Monday happened. District officials said 133 students, or 26 percent of the student body, were home sick. That included 110 students whose parents called them in sick and 23 who were sent home from school. The school remained open, and officials have no plans to cancel classes. “We’re not really going to overreact or act on this until we get some more numbers this week,” Superintendent Shalee Cunningham said. Cunningham said Soda Creek and Strawberry Park elementary schools and Steamboat Springs High School did not have students absent at the same rate as the middle school. Schools in Hayden and South Routt also weren’t hit with unusually high absence rates Monday. Hayden Superintendent Greg Rockhold said 24 of the district’s about 450 students were home sick. South Routt Superintendent Scott Mader said absences didn’t exceed 5 percent district-wide. That wasn’t the case at the middle school’s Strawberry Park campus, where Bishop said about a dozen students were in the nurse’s office before 9 a.m. Monday. The school day starts at 8:20 a.m. He said the school had normal absence rates last week

with between 20 and 30 students home sick each day, which is typical this time of year. On Friday, he said there was a spike, with more than 50 students out. Bishop said he suspected that the high absence rate could have been a result of sixthgraders spending three days overnight together as part of Yampa Valley Science School at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp. But more of the absent students were seventh- and eighth-graders, he said. “I don’t have (a theory) why we’re hit more than any other school right now,” Bishop said. “From what I’m hearing from our nurses, it’s not the same thing for all kids. I think it’s several different illnesses traveling around. It’s not identical symptoms and recovery times.” Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association nurse Dot Haberlan, who oversees health services for Routt County’s public schools, said students were out for a variety of reasons, including flu, strep throat, sinus infections, and head and chest colds. Bishop said students who had spent time home sick had relapsed and were again absent. He asked that all parents keep their children home for at least 24 hours after their fevers subside. The school was fortunate to have only one teacher absent Monday, Bishop said. Cunningham said a discussion about closing schools wouldn’t occur until at least 30 percent of students are absent.

Jay steps down as director Yampa Valley Community Foundation executive resigns

In a move that surprised her board of directors, Betsey Jay stepped down Friday as executive director of the Yampa Valley Community Foundation. Ed Hill, chairman emeritus of the Community Foundation’s board, said the parting was amicable, and he raved about Jay’s two-plus years at the helm of the organization that works with 67 nonprofits and other groups in Routt and Moffat counties. “She has done yeoman’s duty, and we are certainly sorry to see her leave,” Hill said Monday. “She’s done a great job for us.” Jay joined the Community

mation. Hill said he wasn’t sure whether she had accepted another position. Jay did not return messages left on her cell phone Monday. “Wherever she goes, I’m sure she’ll be as successful as she’s been here,” Hill said. “We wish her the best.” Hill said Jay was instrumental in successfully leading a number of Community Foundation fundraising efforts, including the ongoing Community Cares Fund. The fund was created to provide immediate funding to organizations that directly assist residents struggling under the weight of the economic recession. Those fund are being used for needs such as food, housing

About 15 artists cleared the walls at the Steamboat Springs Center for Visual Arts on Monday and carried artwork across Lincoln Avenue to the gallery’s new location. The Center for Visual Arts, a nonprofit community art gallery that features local and regional artists, reopens in its new space next to Steamboat Jewelers during the October First Friday Artwalk. A free opening reception is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. The move from a space next to Off the Beaten Path Bookstore on Ninth Street allows Center for Visual Arts to move forward with some of its community and educational programming ideas, gallery owner Linda Laughlin said. “We’re trying to do more of what we had planned on doing, which is having a space in there that we can have the students,” Laughlin said. The Center for Visual Arts has a five-year lease on its new Lincoln Avenue location, she said. Laughlin leased the gallery’s original Ninth Street spot, which opened in March, on a month-to-month basis, she said. Laughlin hopes to provide studio space for high school art

The gallery will have a few small tables and wireless Internet access available, and Laughlin is looking for a kitchen setup with a counter, cabinets and a sink to make workshop presentations and cleanup easier, she said. COMMENTARY

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?

A war president? Ross Douthat

THE NEW YORK TIMES

All spring and summer, it looked as though Joe Lieberman, the independent from Connecticut, would play the same role in the debate about President Barack Obama’s Afghanistan policy that he played in the struggle concerning Iraq: as a champion of the surge-style counterinsurgency that Obama endorsed in March and as a defender of a wartime White House against the Democratic Party’s leftDouthat ward flank. But that was before Afghanistan’s fraud-riddled elections, before Obama’s new top commander there, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, came back with a dire report and a request for further reinforcements and before a spooked White House entered full-scale reassessment mode.

Now, while Obama weighs his options, Lieberman is waiting to find out if he’s going to be the president’s ally on Afghanistan or one of his sharpest critics. In a conversation last week, the Connecticut senator was careful to avoid taking the president to task for pausing before he escalates. After seven years of war, Lieberman noted, we’ve only now “begun the first serious national debate about Afghanistan: whether we should be there and what we should be doing there. In that regard, it’s entirely appropriate that the president is deliberating.” But Lieberman simultaneously was careful to imply that Obama’s ultimate decision should be a foregone conclusion — not least because the president’s past statements allow for no alternative. Throughout our discussion, Lieberman repeatedly cited Obama’s own arguments (“as the president said the other day ...”) to buttress the case for sending more troops to Afghanistan. And he suggested,

more than once, that the president’s choice essentially amounts to deciding whether to abandon a strategy to which Obama already has committed himself. I heard a similar theme, in public and private, from many counterinsurgency advocates last week. Having recently described Afghanistan as a “war of necessity,” they asked, can the president really turn down a request for more troops from a general he himself appointed to support a campaign that he personally endorsed? The answer is very likely no. However serious his doubts about escalation, Obama seems boxed in — by the thoroughness of McChrystal’s assessment and the military’s united front, by his own arguments across the past two years and by his party’s long-running insistence on painting Afghanistan as the neglected “good war.” But if Obama takes us deeper into war See Douthat, page 9

Cassandras of climate Paul Krugman

THE NEW YORK TIMES

Every once in a while, I feel despair about the fate of the planet. If you’ve been following climate science, you know what I mean: the sense that we’re hurtling toward catastrophe but nobody wants to hear about it or do anything to avert it. And here’s the thing: I’m not engaging in hyperbole. These days, dire warnings aren’t the delusional raving of cranks. They’re what come out of the most wideKrugman ly respected climate models, devised by the leading researchers. The prognosis for the planet has gotten much, much worse in just the past few years. What’s driving this new pessimism? Partly it’s the fact that some predicted changes, such as a decline in Arctic Sea

MALLARD FILLMORE

ice, are happening much faster than expected. Partly it’s growing evidence that feedback loops amplifying the effects of man-made greenhouse gas emissions are stronger than previously realized. For example, it has long been understood that global warming will cause the tundra to thaw, releasing carbon dioxide, which will cause even more warming, but new research shows far more carbon dioxide locked in the permafrost than previously thought, which means a much bigger feedback effect. The result of all this is that climate scientists have, en masse, become Cassandras — gifted with the ability to prophesy future disasters but cursed with the inability to get anyone to believe them. And we’re not just talking about disasters in the distant future, either. The really big rise in global temperature probably won’t take place until the second half of this century, but there will be plenty of damage long before then.

For example, one 2007 paper in the journal Science is titled “Model Projections of an Imminent Transition to a More Arid Climate in Southwestern North America” and reports “a broad consensus among climate models” that a permanent drought, bringing Dust Bowl-type conditions, “will become the new climatology of the American Southwest within a time frame of years to decades.” Now, at this point I have to make the obligatory disclaimer that no individual weather event can be attributed to global warming. The point, however, is that climate change will make events like that Australian dust storm much more common. In a rational world, then, the looming climate disaster would be our dominant political and policy concern. But it manifestly isn’t. Why not? See Krugman, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

Obama’s stance on conflict unknown Douthat continued from 8 out of political necessity rather than conviction, the results could be disastrous. That’s because the counterinsurgency strategy he’s contemplating is the worst possible option — except for all the others. It looks attractive only because the alternatives involve abandoning southern Afghanistan to the Taliban’s tender mercies, playing Whaca-Mole with al-Qaida from afar with hopelessly inadequate intelligence and pushing the nucleararmed Pakistani military back into a marriage of necessity with a resurgent Taliban next door. Even allowing for these perils, the case for escalation remains a near-run thing. In the words of Stephen Biddle, who advised McChrystal on the review, increasing our military involvement in Afghanistan is “a close

call on the merits,” whose “outcome is uncertain” and which is “likely to increase losses and violence in the short term in exchange for a chance at stability in the longer term.” This kind of war may well be worth fighting. But it can only be prosecuted by a president who believes in it wholeheartedly. It will have to be sold to an American public battered by recession and weary of seven years of conflict. It will require rallying a Democratic Party whose support for sending more troops to Afghanistan — the better to outhawk the Republicans — has vanished with the Bush presidency. And it will need to be conducted with a constant eye not only on Iran, but on the fragile situation in Iraq, which has fallen out of the headlines but remains, even now, our most

important military theater. In other words, fighting to win in Afghanistan will require that Obama become as much of a war president as his predecessor. And that’s a role for which he has shown little appetite to date. Maybe this will change. “My hope,” Lieberman told me, is that once Obama finishes his “very public process of deliberation, he will have brought the public along with him” — and placed the war effort on a firmer footing in the process. But the president can only bring the country with him if he really believes in the war that he’s inherited. For now, that remains an open question. And if Obama takes us deeper into a conflict for which he doesn’t really have the stomach, then the outcome will almost certainly be tragic — for him, for us, and for Afghanistan.

The time for action on the climate is now Part of the answer is that it’s hard to keep peoples’ attention focused. Weather fluctuates — New Yorkers may recall the heat wave that pushed the thermometer above 90 in April — and even at a global level, this is enough to cause substantial year-to-year wobbles in average temperature. As a result, any year with record heat is usually followed by a number of cooler years: According to Britain’s Met Office, 1998 was the hottest year so far, although NASA — which arguably has better data — said it was 2005. And it’s all too easy to reach the false conclusion that the danger is past. But the larger reason we’re ignoring climate change is that Al Gore is right: This truth is just

too inconvenient. Responding to climate change with the vigor that the threat deserves would not, contrary to legend, be devastating for the economy as a whole. But it would shuffle the economic deck, hurting some powerful vested interests even as it created new economic opportunities. And the industries of the past have armies of lobbyists in place right now; the industries of the future don’t. Nor is it just a matter of vested interests. It’s also a matter of vested ideas. For three decades the dominant political ideology in America has extolled private enterprise and denigrated government, but climate change is a problem that can only be addressed through government action. And rather than concede the limits of their philosophy, many on the right have chosen to

deny that the problem exists. So here we are, with the greatest challenge facing mankind on the back burner, at best, as a policy issue. I’m not, by the way, saying that the Obama administration was wrong to push health care first. It was necessary to show voters a tangible achievement before next November. But climate change legislation had better be next. And as I pointed out in my last column, we can afford to do this. Even as climate modelers have been reaching consensus on the view that the threat is worse than we realized, economic modelers have been reaching consensus on the view that the costs of emission control are lower than many feared. So the time for action is now. OK, strictly speaking it’s long past. But better late than never.

Crews battle North Routt fire National Weather Service issues red flag warning for today

Firefighters will return this morning to ensure a 1-acre wildfire in northern Routt County is fully extinguished. Crews battled the blaze all day Monday. North Routt Fire Chief Bob Reilley said about 15 firefighters hiked into the Miller Creek Drainage, 1.5 miles past the end of Routt County Road 56 C north of Milner, to fight the fire. There were no buildings anywhere near the fire, he said. Reilley thinks the fire is the result of a days-ago lightning strike that smoldered and was finally noticed Sunday. “It just shows how dry the fuels really are,” he said. The fire was reported at 4:43 p.m. Sunday, but by the time it was located, it was too dark and dangerous for firefighters to enter the area, Reilley said. When firefighters reached the fire, Reilley said it was about a tenth of an acre in an area of fir and spruce trees covering ferns and grass. “There are really dry fuels, and our concern is we get this taken care of before it gets any larger,” he said Monday morning. Fire crews left the area at about 7 p.m. Monday. The dry fuels also prompted the National Weather Service to issue a red flag warning from noon to 9 p.m. today across almost all of western Colorado, including all of Routt County and part of northeast Utah. The red flag warning covers all areas below 9,000 feet. “Southwesterly winds will increase and become gusty as a strong upper-level system approaches from the west,” the warning states. “Low-level moisture will also be limited. Critical

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning in effect from noon to 9 p.m. today for western Colorado below 9,000 feet. A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential. Combining with dry fuels, these conditions may create a high probability of large fire growth.

Shine on, harvest moon G

et ready for a big ol’ harvest moon this weekend. There’s a lot of folklore out there concerning the unusual harvest moon phenomenon. Let’s see if we can separate fact from fiction. The cycle of lunar phases brings us a full moon once every 29 1/2 days, or roughly once each month, and each full moon has its own name, steeped in folklore and Native American tradition. October’s full moon is traditionally called the harvest

Jimmy Westlake moon. This year’s harvest moon occurs Saturday night, and if you are the least bit observant, you’ll notice something unusual for several days surrounding this full moon. Usually, the moon rises about one hour later each night, but at the time of the harvest moon it rises only about 25 minutes later each night for several nights in a row. This means that a big, bright full moon is rising just as the sun is setting and provides a little extra light as darkness falls. Farmers in particular welcomed the extended hours of light right at the peak time of harvesting the fields, hence the popular name for this month’s full moon. The effect is even more pronounced the farther north you go. In fact, up around the latitude of Anchorage, Alaska, the harvest moon actually can rise earlier the second night. It all has to do with the 23.5degree tilt of the Earth’s axis and the 5-degree inclination of the moon’s orbit. Some folks are convinced the harvest moon looks much bigger than other full moons. When seen near the horizon, the rising full moon can appear abnormally large in size. How big do you think it looks? As big as a tennis ball or a basketball? Believe it or not, you can cover that giant harvest moon with the tip of your pinky finger held at arm’s length. The moon’s bloated appearance when seen near the horizon is a famous optical illusion called the “moon illusion.” The moon is really no larger

when seen near the horizon than it is when seen overhead. Don’t believe me? Prove it to yourself. On Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening this weekend, when you first see that big full moon rising over the mountains in the east, hold up your pinky finger at arm’s length and see that you really can totally eclipse the moon with your little appendage. Later in the evening, when the moon has risen higher in the sky, perform the same experiment. Seeing is believing — the results will be the same. Something about holding up your pinky finger at arm’s length makes that big full moon shrink down to size. Psychologists don’t agree on why the rising full moon looks so abnormally large. One explanation is that when seen low on the horizon, the moon’s size can be judged against trees, mountains, houses and other foreground objects and it looks large by comparison, but when seen overhead, the moon appears in a big, dark, empty sky with nothing to compare it to and it looks tiny. This explanation, however, does not explain why sailors at sea observe the same illusion where there is nothing on the distant horizon for comparison. Here’s another lunar illusion mystery: When you see that big harvest moon this weekend, turn around, bend over and look at it upside down from between your legs. Lo and behold, it looks normal size again. Shine on, harvest moon. Westlake teaches astronomy and physics at Colorado Mountain College’s Alpine Campus. Hill: Efforts won’t take big hit Jay continued from 5 and health care. The Community Foundation partnered with Routt County United Way on the Community Cares Fund and thus far has raised about $70,000, Community Foundation marketing manager Heidi Barbee said. She added that funds from the Steamboat Springs Rotary Club’s Community Barbecue and Barn Dance on Saturday also were contributed to the fund. Jay also assisted local groups in fundraising for the Trillium House at Yampa River Botanic Park, the Rollingstone Respite House, the new Soda Creek and Strawberry Park elemen-

tary school playgrounds, and the launch of the Steamboat Springs Boys and Girls Club this summer. The Community Foundation board will meet Wednesday morning to decide what direction to take regarding Jay’s replacement, Hill said. He said that could include appointing an interim executive director or having a board member fill that role temporarily. Hill doesn’t expect the Community Foundation’s efforts to generate endowments and longterm funds to take a significant hit in the absence of an executive director. — To reach Jack Weinstein, call 871-4203 or e-mail jweinstein@steamboatpilot.com

Questions about 700 remain for some Steamboat 700 continued from 1 the future course of the Yampa Valley. Whether that change would be for better or for worse, however, is up for debate. Steamboat 700 is within the boundaries of the West of Steamboat Springs Area Plan, which contemplates growth and annexation to help accomplish a number of community goals, principally affordable housing. City Council President Loui Antonucci said, in general, he’s ready to see annexation to accomplish the plan’s goals. But when it comes to Steamboat 700 specifically, he still has questions and concerns. Antonucci said he worries about whether Steamboat 700 truly will be able to create attainable housing for local workers — beyond the requirements of its community housing plan — given the large number of costs being placed on the development in the annexation agreement. Steamboat 700 Principal and Project Manager Danny Mulcahy did not return a phone call seeking comment for this story, but he has said in the past that he has no choice but to sell attainable homes to Steamboat workers because he won’t be able to compete with high-end properties in prime locations such as Old Town and the base of Steamboat Ski Area. Antonucci said he worries about how the city will prepare itself to take over maintenance responsibility for a number of improvements to be constructed by Steamboat 700’s metro districts. Antonucci also wants to see more green building practices and sustainability measures required within the development. Council members also will be asked to discuss anti-speculation controls for market-rate units in the development, the 13th Street bottleneck problem that is not being addressed by Steamboat 700, and a revised water demand report showing the development will require a bit more water service than initially anticipated. Antonucci said he expects Steamboat 700 will pass on first

Endorsements Steamboat 700 recently won an endorsement from the Yampa Valley Housing Authority. “The WSSAP has correctly identified the west of Steamboat Springs area as the only potential area available for significant new affordable housing stock in Steamboat Springs,” states a letter from Housing Authority President Ed MacArthur to the council. “The Steamboat 700 project represents the first major project to capture some of this potential.” At 9:45 a.m. today, the Routt County Board of Commissioners will be asked to submit a similar letter in support of the project. “The Steamboat 700 annexation is an implementation of 14 years of community planning efforts beginning with the 1995 Steamboat Springs Community Plan,” Steamboat 700 consultant Peter Patten wrote in an e-mail to county officials. “If the Steamboat 700 annexation does not occur, the goals of the WSSAP will be lost and the undesirable impacts of growth outside the WSSAP … will likely occur, putting increased pressure on Routt County government … to accommodate this growth.” Steamboat 700 representatives also may bolster their argument by citing the recently released Routt County Housing Needs Assessment, which states

The city of Steamboat Springs has received a gift of $75,000 from the estate of Helen Rehder and will apply it to the rehabilitation of the First National Bank/Rehder Building that houses the Steamboat Art Museum. Phase 1 rehabilitation is under way with masonry and window restoration. Phase 2 will include timber roof truss reinforcement. Antares restaurant is to the rear of the bank building. Museum officials have talked informally with the city about occupying the space the restaurant began vacating this week, but nothing is in place, according to city officials.

ski season with five food servers, two bussers, two hosts, two bartenders and a crew of seven in the kitchen. Annie Kavanaugh, who waited tables there off and on for 15 years, said even though she saw it coming, the end took her by surprise. “We’ve had it hanging over us,” Kavanaugh said. “By the same token, it wasn’t real. We’re still trying to fathom it. It’s a great loss. I couldn’t have talked to you about it last week.” Before there was Antares, there was Gorky Park and before that, beginning in 1972, there was the legendary Brandywine. A generation of hard-charging mogul skiers lived the high life and stored a lot of memories at the old Brandywine. But they say all things must pass. Before the Brandywine opened at 57 1/2 Eighth St., Boggs Hardware repaired farm tractors and hay balers in the historic building in downtown Steamboat Springs.

Norman Schwarzkopf and Bill “The Life Aquatic” Murray. “It’s sad, but it’s a new chapter,” Zahradnik said. “We definitely enjoyed our stay here. We’ve had a great time. The Rehders were good to us, and the city’s been fine to us since they’ve owned it.” The future of Antares made news late in 2008 when the city of Steamboat Springs assumed ownership of the 1905 Rehder building. It holds a place on the National Historic Register and is currently under repair. Antares had enjoyed favorable lease terms of $9.13 per square foot per year ($2,738 per month), and when then Interim City Manager Wendy DuBord proposed raising the rent to $15 per square foot (still below market rate), Zahradnik said the restaurant would not stay beyond Sept. 30, 2009. City Council relented and offered to let Antares remain

in place under its current terms by renewing the lease for six months before Oct. 1. But there has been miscommunication on both sides, and after a disappointing ski season and an even worse summer, LeBrun and Zahradnik no longer see the point in prolonging things. LeBrun said he hadn’t been offered a new lease, but he added that a six-month extension didn’t do much for him. DuBord said the city sent the lease with a letter in January. “I assumed it had been signed,” she said Monday. “Shame on us for not following up more closely, but we got in touch with them last week and offered again to extend it through ski season.” Too late. The die is cast. “We talked about it,” LeBrun said. “It was kind of up in the air. We don’t owe any money. We started running the numbers a couple of weeks ago, and we said, ‘That’s it, we’re closing.’ It’s just another chapter in my life. There’s no emotion in it.” Zahradnik said she doesn’t imagine she’ll own another restaurant, but she can see herself keeping the books for another restaurateur. LeBrun may find himself in a restaurant kitchen in this town again, but first he plans to take the winter to spend more time with his wife and children. He’ll probably prepare the port shallot sauce that made his version of tournedos unforgettable. But it won’t be the same. “Maybe it’s time,” LeBrun said. “It’ll never be like it was.” In its heyday, Antares was staffed on a jumping night in

Denver teachers OK contract

Denver teachers have overwhelmingly approved a revised contract with a 2.5 percent cost-of-living raise and 1.65 percent stipend if the economy improves. About 92 percent of the

teachers who voted last week to lower the pay raise approved last year. Roughly 1,700 teachers, or two-thirds of the members of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association, cast ballots. School officials say a new contract for the district’s 4,500

teachers was necessary because of the troubled economy. The three-year contract approved last year included an annual cost-of-living raise based on the inflation rate in the metro area plus 0.25 percent. That amounted to a 4.15 percent increase for this school year.

Avs look to youth for new season Team trying to replace veterans Pat Graham

Growing up in Canada, Matt Duchene had his room decorated in a Colorado Avalanche motif. On one wall, he had a poster of Joe Sakic. On another, a magazine cutout of Peter Forsberg. Taped above his bunk bed was a poster of Patrick Roy. He collected signed sweaters from Avalanche players and always imagined himself wearing one down the road. Never did it dawn on him that he might one day be the next face of the franchise. With the retirement of Sakic during the summer, Colorado was in the market for another superstar. Enter Duchene, the quickskating, super-skilled 18-yearold forward the Avalanche drafted with the third overall pick in June. Duchene doesn’t think of himself as filling Sakic’s skates. The longtime captain left the game as a huge fan favorite and among the NHL’s career scoring leaders, finishing eighth in points (1,641), 11th in assists (1,016) and 14th in goals (625). Those are lofty standards. “I don’t think anyone will ever fill his shoes,” said Duchene, who’s from Haliburton, Ontario. “So I don’t think about that too much.” For now, he’s just happy to make the roster. Duchene and second-round selection Ryan O’Reilly will open the season with the team as the Avalanche head into the year with a youthful squad. They have 11 players on the team who are 25 or younger. Fans waiting for Josh McDaniels to say “I told you so” likely will be disappointed. The Denver Broncos’ new coach answered his critics with a 3-0 start, and he’s disregarding all the accolades now coming his team’s way. It’s the same approach he

took in the offseason when he brushed off criticism that he was an arrogant, baby-faced know-it-all who didn’t know what he was doing by trading Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler. Although notions of the Broncos’ chances this season are improving with each win, McDaniels is mindful that the meat of the schedule is coming up.

“What we have, how we’ve practiced, what we’ve assembled here and the way we go about our business has never changed. And we feel good about that,” McDaniels said Monday. “We’ve always had confidence regardless of anybody else’s opinion. I said yesterday it doesn’t really matter what anybody else thinks, all that matters is what we think. “We still have a long way to

go, a lot of work to do and a lot of improvements to make to be where we want to be. So, we know where we’re at. We’re glad we’re 3-0, but a lot of work to do still.” After beating Cincinnati, Cleveland and Oakland, things get decidedly tougher for Denver starting next week with the Dallas Cowboys. a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Routt County Rifle Club. “She got a lot of women into the sport,” Schaffer said. “We are hoping to make this an annual event, and she would be happy that it was bringing more women into shooting.” Farrow died July 28 after she was struck by a dump truck while checking her mailbox on U.S. Highway 40 just outside

Farrow Repair Service — the repair shop she co-owned. Schaffer says she lost a good friend that day, and she wants to make sure Farrow’s love and passion for shooting lives on. “I don’t want her passion to die,” Schaffer said. “We just felt like we needed to do something to keep things rolling.” See Shoot, page 20

It’s a sign this might be a rebuilding year for the Avalanche after a season in which they finished last in the Western Conference for the first time since moving to Denver from Quebec in 1995. “People throw that rebuilding word around; it’s not the word we try to use here,” first-year NHL coach Joe Sacco said. “We’re going to try to get this organization and team back to the level of

number of target games on the rifle range, the pistol range and the shotgun range. Schaffer said the indoor range is also available for participants to shoot air rifles and air pistols. T.J. Thrasher, from Wapiti Bowmen, will help those who want to try archery. Participants will get a punch card for completing each station, which will be used for a prize drawing at the end of the event. “We are really looking for women and first-time shooters,” Schaffer said. “We will not turn away experienced shooters, but we are discouraging people from bringing their own firearms. We will provide them with everything they need.” There will also be a silent auction, and Schaffer said she’s already received several great items. — To reach John F. play that’s expected of it.” Colorado cleaned house in the wake of a dismal year, firing general manager Francois Giguere and parting ways with coach Tony Granato. The team brought in GM Greg Sherman and Sacco to fix a franchise that won Stanley Cup titles in 1996 and 2001. “Hopefully we can create a little bit of a buzz,” Sacco said. That’s where Duchene fits in. He brings instant buzz as the highest draft pick by the franchise since 1991. Duchene’s game is an awful lot like that of his idol Sakic, whose dazzling play on the ice was one of the reasons — along with Roy and Forsberg — that he became an Avalanche fan. Naturally, the comparisons to Sakic were inevitable. His teammates, though, are telling him to just tune it out. “He is going to have to find his own identity and find that role within this team to really excel,” defenseman John-Michael Liles said. “But it’s not a bad guy to be compared to.” During the offseason, the Avalanche attempted to shore up their shortcomings in net. They brought in veteran Craig Anderson, who was a backup to Tomas Vokoun last year with the Florida Panthers. Anderson is contending for time in goal with holdover Peter Budaj. “I’m in a position right now where I’ve earned some ice time and I have an opportunity here to earn a lot of ice time if I play well,” Anderson said. “Peter and I are going to push each other.”

Squad wraps up league title Steamboat adult tennis team looks toward district competition John F. Russell

PILOT & TODAY STAFF

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

A nearly perfect record in league play this season has given a group of tennis players from Steamboat Springs the chance to play for a district title in the Colorado Tennis Association’s summer adult league. “This is the first time any 4.0 team from Steamboat Springs has made it to the district playoffs in Denver,” said Becky Lamb, co-captain of the Steamboat team. The local women’s 4.0 tennis team topped the league’s Western Slope Division, which included teams from Snowmass, Glenwood Springs, Steamboat and Carbondale. Steamboat finished with a 7-1 record. The top finish gives the local women an opportunity to compete against other top teams from around the state at the district tournament Monday to Oct. 7 at athletic clubs in Inverness and Monaco. “This tournament is strictly Colorado,” team captain Jan Sullivan said. “We had a great

group of women this season and a great team atmosphere.” This year’s team included Meg Tully, Amy Hillenbrand, Carol Bender, Tibby Speare, Christina Peters, Elysse Tanner, Sherry Reed, Darby Burger, Lamb and Sullivan. Steamboat has competed in the league for several seasons, but this year, things seemed to have favored the local team. “We’ve had close matches with all the teams in our league the past several years,” Tully said. “This year, we had a lot of tie-breakers that went our way. For whatever reason, luck was on our side, and the stars were aligned to make it our year. We are really excited about it, and

we hope to do Steamboat proud in Denver.” Steamboat swept the final two matches of the season in Steamboat Springs a week ago to hold off the Glenwood team. The team’s only loss this season came against Glenwood Springs, which finished the season in second place at 5-3. The team will open the round-robin district tournament Monday. Steamboat is scheduled to play one match Monday and two Oct. 6. If the team wins, it will advance to the semifinal and final rounds, which will be played Oct. 7.

Cowboys corral Panthers Defense leads Dallas to 21-7 win against Carolina Jaime Aron

NFL

ARLINGTON, TEXAS

Leading, but not by much, Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys were desperately in need of a big play. Jake Delhomme helped them make several. Terence Newman returned an interception 27 yards for a leadstretching touchdown with 5:07 left, then rookie Newman linebacker Victor Butler got two sacks and forced a fumble on the next series, sending Dallas to a 21-7 victory against the Carolina Panthers on Monday night. Considering the Cowboys were coming off a last-second

Broncos continued from 19 the Patriots, followed by a trip to San Diego, the prohibitive AFC West favorite. After the Broncos’ bye, the next month includes visits from Pittsburgh, San Diego and the New York Giants and a trip to Baltimore. And McDaniels knows there’s lots of room for improvement. So what was his plan Monday to keep his team from getting overconfident after trouncing the Oakland Raiders 23-3? “Just show them the film,” McDaniels said. “We’ve got a 50-play cutup that we’re going to watch during the squad meeting, and it’s not all bows and ribbons.” One thing that stuck out from the Raiders game, McDaniels

Denver’s defensive turnaround has been key, especially because quarterback Kyle Orton is managing the games so well, not taking any unnecessary chances, throwing away passes when he’s under pressure and checking out of pass plays and into backbreaking runs at just the right time. He won Sunday, despite throwing for just 157 yards. In the past two years, the Broncos spent September getting steamrolled in the running game. Not anymore. One reason, suggest some players, is they spent most of this summer in full pads a year after former coach Mike Shanahan put them in pads for a single goal-line drill at a single training camp practice.

said, was shaky special teams play. “We’re going to work on field goal protection Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and they’ll understand how important that is,” he said. Although he’s loathe to say anything surprises him, McDaniels conceded the rebuilt defense, which is allowing a league-low 5.3 points per game, has come together with eight new starters faster than expected. “I don’t think you anticipate only giving up one touchdown in 180 minutes of football,” McDaniels said. “But we thought we had a chance to be a pretty good defense, physical up front, good secondary, tackled fairly well here in the first three weeks of the season.”

loss in the opener of their $1.15 billion stadium, a crowd of 90,588 was especially tense until the defense put the game away. The biggest sigh of relief likely came from team owner Jerry Jones. “It certainly does feel good,” Jones said. “The way it went so early, it just felt like maybe we ought to check this thing out for Grim Reapers living in the back someplace.” Dallas (2-1) trailed 7-0 at halftime and was booed by fans. Although the defense was playing well and running backs Felix Jones and Tashard Choice were easing the load on Romo, the quarterback was being so careful to avoid the mistakes that doomed the Cowboys the

previous week that the offense struggled to turn long drives into points. When Romo threw a pair of incompletions from the 1-yard line midway through the fourth quarter, Dallas was up by only six points. Then Newman stepped in front of a pass to Steve Smith, darted toward the right corner of the end zone and dived in. Butler capped the night with his pair of sacks and the turnover, giving the Cowboys three of each after not having any of either over the first two weeks. “Everybody on the outside was pressing the panic button, but not us,” linebacker Bradie James said. “We knew we had a bunch of ball left to play. There was still a lot of time to improve.”
