City administrators and council members have the grim job today of reviewing a 2010 budget with cuts to nearly every city department, as Steamboat Springs’ sales tax revenues continue to slide.

Who said anything about a grizz? Alaskan hunter sights a 7-foot-tall bear in Zirkel Wilderness

W

hether it was an unusually large black bear that approached the archery elk camp in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness or something more fearsome, it was enough to put the fear into a veteran hunter from Alaska. “My partner saw a huge brown-colored bear,” former longtime South Routt resident Harold Lujan said Monday. “He was 80 yards from it and it scared him. He’s seen a lot of black bear, a lot of grizzlies and a lot of brown bear. He said if it had stood up, it would have been 7 feet tall.” Chances are, you and I would be frightened, too, if we encountered a bear as tall as Shaquille O’Neal. But Lujan’s hunting partner is more experienced than you and I (with large bears, not with NBA pivot men). And he was hunting with a biologist from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Tom Ross PILOT & TODAY

“These guys are both biologists and big-time hunters,” Lujan said. The man who saw the giant brown bear “operates a salmon factory and deals with bears all the time. He’s shot grizzlies from close range with a bow.” So, it’s roughly the third week in September during archery season, there is fresh snow on the ground where the hunters have been able to observe the tracks of a large bear, and a veteran hunter from Alaska who has killed grizz up close and personal gets a good look at a large bear. It’s large enough to put the fear of God into him as it walks up

the trail toward his campsite. Do we have a grizzly bear sighting in Northern Colorado? Not so fast, Lujan said. “When you see a bear that’s a 7-foot bear and it’s brown colored and you’re scared, you can’t say it’s 100 percent” a grizzly. Nonetheless … “My friend said, ‘That’s the closest I’ve ever been to a bear that big!’” This from a man who has apparently killed smaller grizzly bears at closer range. The men did not obtain any photographs of the beast. It would have been even better if it had rubbed itself on a dead pine tree nearby and left large silver hairs behind for wildlife biologists to examine. No such luck. Area Wildlife Manager Jim Haskins, of the Colorado Division of Wildlife, said he wouldn’t automatically reject reports of a grizzly from credSee Ross, page 12

Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. has launched a new Web site to showcase travel options and fares at Yampa Valley Regional Airport. The site, www.flysteamboat. com, advertised fares Monday including $289 from Boston, with one stop; $312 from Austin, Texas, with one stop; and $368 nonstop from Atlanta. Andy Wirth, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Ski Corp., said flights advertised on the sight are “bidirectional” and will help local travelers find lower fares out of the Yampa Valley, as well as provide a new platform for vacationers seeking fares to YVRA. “Most of our airfares right now are in the $200s to $300s, and this time last year they were in the $600s to $800s,” Wirth said. “We’ve been successful at getting hold of great airfares into this valley, through very aggressive marketing and communications programs.” Wirth credited Ski Corp. Airline Program Director Janet Fischer with “spending a great deal of time on the phone selling these programs to pricing managers” at Delta/Northwest, American Airlines, United Airlines and Continental Airlines. Frontier is not providing service to YVRA this winter. Steamboat’s Local Marketing District, which brokers contracts to secure air service in the valley, helped fund the new Web site, Wirth said. Barbara Robinson, general manager of the Holiday Inn of Steamboat Springs, said last week that she appreciated Ski Corp.’s efforts. “What I like is the fact that we will once again have excellent air service — the airfares are very low,” Robinson said. “The mountain has gone out of their way with great incentives. … I personally think we will have a cautiously optimistic winter.” Wirth said Friday that Ski

Corp. has “about 20 to 23 percent of the season on the books,” meaning it has booked about onefifth of the total guests booked last winter. “Three to four years ago, we would have had about 25 to 28 percent of the season on the books (at this time),” Wirth said, adding that “most resorts” are between 8 and 23 percent booked for this winter. “Generally speaking, we’re seeing trends that we’re performing to higher ends of the spectrum,” he said about Steamboat Ski Area and Steamboat Central Reservations. At the Sheraton Steamboat Resort, general manager John Curnow said last week that “our winter bookings are pacing well ahead right now. … I think there are some positive signs out there.”

Marsha Daughenbaugh FOR THE STEAMBOAT TODAY

Autumn. What a truly beautiful time of the year. In the Yampa Valley, we regale in the glory of the colors: deep blue skies that carry the warmth of reduced daylight, white clouds that beckon us to wrap ourselves within them, the deep reds of the scrub oak mixed with the yellow and oranges of the aspen and the almost black-green of the pines. Add a dusting of white snow on the very tops of the mountains and the combination literally can take our breath away. It is a time that demands attention. Those of us involved in agriculture are well aware of the lessening of daylight hours

The haying must be completed, the bales stacked into common areas and the stackyards fenced to keep cattle and elk away from the commodity that the livestock rely on during the cold days. Grain must be harvested and delivered to market or stored in on-farm granaries. Cattle and sheep must be gathered from their summer ranges, sorted and shipped to their winter homes.

Steamboat schools won’t pay for this year’s increased assessments Jack Weinstein

PILOT & TODAY STAFF

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

The Steamboat Springs School District will not pay this year for increased assessments from the Northwest Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services, Superintendent Shalee Cunningham told the School Board on Monday night. She said the same recommendation will be made by the superintendents of the five other districts that receive statemandated special education and other services from BOCES. The group of superintendents

and their finance staffs met in Kremmling at the end of last week. BOCES, which charges each of its member districts for the services it provides, recently adjusted this year’s assessments, asking its six member districts to pay $481,796 more than they were told those services would cost in May when the districts were preparing their budgets for the 2009-10 school year. That includes $234,602 owed by the Steamboat school district. Cunningham told the Steamboat Springs School Board on Monday that the districts would find ways to pay $317,000 in

under-assessments BOCES billed for the 2008-09 school year. Those under-assessments are separate from the increased assessments BOCES is charging for the 2009-10 school year. Steamboat owes $102,790 for the 2008-09 school year, according to BOCES. “While we are willing to be a part of the solution, we are not willing or able to have increased assessments to pull them out of this financial situation,” Cunningham said. Instead of paying for the increased assessments, CunningSee School Board, back page

19 percent absent at Strawberry Park Jack Weinstein

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

The illnesses that contributed to 30 percent of Steamboat Springs Middle School students staying home last Tuesday have traveled across the parking lot to Strawberry Park Elementary School. Dot Haberlan, of the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, said 96 students were absent from Strawberry Park on Monday; that’s 19 percent of the student body. Haberlan, who oversees health services for Routt County schools, reiterated that district officials don’t think the illnesses are part of a swine flu outbreak. Like last week, when students at the middle school

were out sick with a variety of illnesses, Haberlan said the same was true Monday at Strawberry Park. Students were absent with ailments including flu, strep throat, stomach viruses, sinus infections and head and chest colds. “We do see these things when there is flu that is circulating,” she said. “Those things seem to go hand in hand.” Superintendent Shalee Cunningham said district officials continue to monitor absence rates at schools. Haberlan said the VNA is participating in the Colorado Department of Health and Environment’s Influenza Surveillance effort to monitor flulike absences daily at all county schools. Suzi Mariano, a spokes-

woman with the VNA, said its surveillance effort also will take place at schools in Moffat and Jackson counties. She said the daily surveillance statistics would be compiled for the remainder of the school year. Haberlan said absences for the rest of the Steamboat school district were near normal levels — about 5 to 10 percent of the student body — for this time of year. On Monday, the middle school was down to 46 absences, or 9 percent of its student body, after more than 100 students were out sick three days last week. At Steamboat Springs High School, only 17 students, or about 3 percent, were absent Monday. And at Soda Creek Elementary School, 60 students, or 13 percent, were home sick.

Within the walls of a garage at TIC headquarters on a snowy Monday, Steamboat Springs High School seniors taped pieces of cardboard together into the shape of a rocket ship. A small group of seniors and parents decorated the ship while others painted a second ship that will be attached to a forklift. There’s a reason for the work — the high school’s homecoming week is in full swing, and the handiwork of the seniors will take to downtown Steamboat

at 2 p.m. Friday for the annual homecoming parade. This year’s homecoming theme is “outer space,” and the week includes dress-up days and other activities. Each day of the week also gives students the opportunity to compete against other classes by dressing up to win spirit points. On Monday, the dress-up theme was neon; today it’s Star Wars; Wednesday is Men in Black; Thursday is a color war between classes; and Friday is spirit day. Other activities during the week include a powder-puff football game at 7:30 p.m. today and a bonfire from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Brent Romick Rodeo Arena. One of the most highly anticipated events, the annual teacher skit, will be shown to students Friday before they are released for the parade. Students will gather in the auditorium for a few laughs before they head out to their individual floats. During the assembly, teachers show skits they have been preparing secretly the past few weeks. COMMENTARY

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?

The politics of spite Paul Krugman

THE NEW YORK TIMES

There was what President Barack Obama likes to call a teachable moment last week, when the International Olympic Committee rejected Chicago’s bid to be host of the 2016 Summer Games. “Cheers erupted” at the headquarters of the conservative Weekly Standard, according to a blog post by a member of the magazine’s staff, with the headline “Obama Krugman loses! Obama loses!” Rush Limbaugh declared himself “gleeful.” “World Rejects Obama,” gloated the Drudge Report. And so on. So what did we learn from this moment? For one thing, we learned that the modern conservative movement, which dominates the modern Republican Party, has the emotional

maturity of a bratty 13-year-old. But more important, the episode illustrated an essential truth about the state of American politics: At this point, the guiding principle of one of our nation’s two great political parties is spite pure and simple. If Republicans think something might be good for the president, they’re against it — whether or not it’s good for America. To be sure, while celebrating America’s rebuff by the Olympic Committee was puerile, it didn’t do any real harm. But the same principle of spite has determined Republican positions on more serious matters, with potentially serious consequences — in particular, in the debate about health care reform. Now, it’s understandable that many Republicans oppose Democratic plans to extend insurance coverage — just as most Democrats opposed President Bush’s attempt to convert Social

Security into a sort of giant 401(k). The two parties do, after all, have different philosophies about the appropriate role of government. But the tactics of the two parties have been different. In 2005, when Democrats campaigned against Social Security privatization, their arguments were consistent with their underlying ideology: They argued that replacing guaranteed benefits with private accounts would expose retirees to too much risk. The Republican campaign against health care reform, by contrast, has shown no such consistency. For the main GOP line of attack is the claim — based mainly on lies about death panels and so on — that reform will undermine Medicare. And this line of attack is utterly at odds with the party’s traditions and with what conservatives claim to believe. See Krugman, page 9

In olden days when “a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking” there was a morals clause written into an actor’s film contract. The purpose was to restrain an actor from engaging in public behavior that might offend the audience and harm ticket sales. Today, lewd and crude behavior can boost ticket sales and TV ratings and what passes for a morals Thomas clause deals with sexual harassment in the workplace. Which brings me to David Letterman’s recent disclosure that he has had sex with female subordinates who worked on his show. Much of the coverage has mentioned that this

was before his marriage to his live-in girlfriend of more than a decade with whom he fathered a child. Some wish to draw a moral distinction between fornication and adultery. It is something like the line Whoopi Goldberg tried to draw on “The View” between rape and what she called “rape rape” while discussing director Roman Polanski’s 1977 sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl. Hey, if Woody Allen (a signer of the petition for going easy on Polanski) can marry his adopted daughter when he was the lover of Mia Farrow, who is to say any line exists between anything? On his show, Letterman admitted only to “creepy” behavior. Does this make him a “creep”? Not in our modern cultural view of morality. To admit to being a creep would exact a moral judgment and suggest a line exists that divides the creep from the non-creep. CBS president Leslie Moonves is unlikely to be helpful in the Letterman

affair(s) as rumor has it that while he was still married he famously “dated” a subordinate by the name of Julie Chen, who coincidentally was promoted to co-host of the network’s morning show. I’m sure Ms. Chen got her job based on merit and no other considerations entered into her selection. More disturbing than Letterman’s behavior and acknowledgement of sex with subordinates (it wasn’t a confession in the religious sense of the word because an honest confession usually leads to repentance, and we are a long way from that with these cultural polluters) was the reaction from the studio audience. When Letterman mentioned that a man — allegedly “48 Hours” producer Robert Halderman — had tried to extort $2 million from him in return for the man’s silence, Letterman transformed himself into a victim and See Thomas, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

VIEWPOINTS impeachment saga. The only difference now is that the GOP is in a weaker position, having lost control not just of Congress but, to a large extent, of the terms of debate. The public no longer buys conservative ideology the way it used to; the old attacks on Big Government and paeans to the magic of the marketplace have lost their resonance. Yet conservatives retain their belief that they, and only they, should govern. The result has been a cynical, ends-justify-the-means approach. Hastening the day when the rightful governing party returns to power is all that matters, so the GOP will seize any club at hand with which to beat the current administration. It’s an ugly picture. But it’s the truth. And it’s a truth anyone trying to find solutions to America’s real problems has to understand.

TV contributes to unraveling moral fiber Thomas continued from 8 the audience laughed and applauded. He said he wanted to protect his wife, the women with whom he had had sex, himself and his job. I can hear my late father now: “If you want to protect yourself, you should not engage in behavior that puts you at risk. That would be the best protection.” Dad was so old-fashioned and so right. Stephanie Birkitt, who was described by The New York Times as “Letterman’s longtime personal assistant,” is one

of the women alleged to have had a sexual relationship with Letterman. She has appeared in numerous skits on the show. Apparently the casting couch lives at CBS. A Washington Times headline revealed the shallowness in our moral water table: “Letterman’s TV Affairs Admission Called Adept PR Move.” It’s all about public relations and survival these days, not contrition and repentance. The legalities of all this have yet to be worked out, but as Halderman’s lawyer said last

week, what is known is not all that will be known. That will keep the tabloids busy as they seek to talk to the women involved. But this should be a reminder to the rest of us that television has become a rude and unwelcome guest in our homes. If my children were young, I would get rid of it. It has little that is worth watching and a lot that is harmful to what remains of the rapidly unraveling moral fiber of America. In fact, a strong case can be made that so much of what is on TV is aiding and abetting the unraveling.

Think about just how bizarre it is for Republicans to position themselves as the defenders of unrestricted Medicare spending. First of all, the modern GOP considers itself the party of Ronald Reagan — and Reagan was a fierce opponent of Medicare’s creation, warning that it would destroy American freedom. (Honest.) In the 1990s, Newt Gingrich tried to force drastic cuts in Medicare financing. And in recent years, Republicans have repeatedly decried the growth in entitlement spending — growth that is largely driven by rising health care costs. But the Obama administration’s plan to expand coverage relies in part on savings from Medicare. And since the GOP opposes anything that might be good for Obama, it has become the passionate defender of ineffective medical procedures

and overpayments to insurance companies. How did one of our great political parties become so ruthless, so willing to embrace scorched-earth tactics even if so doing undermines the ability of any future administration to govern? The key point is that ever since the Reagan years, the Republican Party has been dominated by radicals — ideologues and/or apparatchiks who, at a fundamental level, do not accept anyone else’s right to govern. Anyone surprised by the venomous, over-the-top opposition to Obama must have forgotten the Clinton years. Remember when Rush Limbaugh suggested that Hillary Clinton was a party to murder? When Newt Gingrich shut down the federal government in an attempt to bully Bill Clinton into accepting those Medicare cuts? And let’s not even talk about the

Agriculture Fall Gathering is on Nov. 8 Daughenbaugh continued from 4 for a neighborhood picnic. The “annual paychecks” come across the kitchen table as lambs, calves, steers, hay and grain are sold and delivered. Checkbooks are rebalanced and the dreaded safari to the bankers begins anew. And this year, our entire region talks about the people that we have lost to tragic circumstances, as well as some of the community leaders who died of old age. We miss them and

will remember them. We wish their families well. As another year closes in on us, it is time for the annual Ag Fall Gathering. The members of our varied agriculture organizations soon will receive their invitation to join their neighbors and friends for industry updates, good food, socializing and entertainment. Time to mark your calendar and save the date: Nov. 8 in Steamboat Springs. The various organizational meetings will start at 1 p.m. and will be

staggered throughout the afternoon so you can hear what each of the groups are working on. Supper will be served at 4 p.m., awards at 5:30 p.m., and toe-tappin’ entertainment at 6 p.m. It is the right time to enjoy the fruits of our labors and give a word of thanks for the opportunity to work in Routt County agriculture. Daughenbaugh is the executive director of the Community Agriculture Alliance.

with no success. Whatever species of bear it was that Lujan’s party sighted, it wasn’t the only bear in the woods that week. “We had a great time elk hunting,” Lujan said, “but it was unbelievable the amount of bears up there.” Lujan watched a sow with a pair of cubs invite themselves to dinner on the carcass of an elk he shot on the last night of muzzle-loading season. And another bear made a major pest of itself, returning four days in a row and finally tearing things up despite the food that was hung 10 feet up in a tree. “I was in camp eating a salami and saw this little bear approaching through the trees. He got a whiff of that salami and he made a 90-degree turn,” Lujan said. “He was on the other side of a wood pile from me and had his nose to the ground. When he got to the woodpile he stood on his hind legs and looked at me. “I said, ‘Hey buddy … how you doin’?’ You know how bears get when they’re nervous? Their jaws tremble? Well, his jaw started trembling and he started slobbering.’” Don’t you just hate it when bears think they can get away with slobbering in camp? Tom Ross is a longtime Steamboat resident. He sat in on a meeting of state wildlife directors from Utah, Wyoming and Colorado and their staffs this summer at Steamboat Lake. Bear management policy was a big topic of discussion at the summit meeting. “There was agreement that some policies need to be rethought,” Haskins said. “We’re having a lot of the same problems, like running out of places to put bears. where they’ve never seen them before.” Wyoming is experiencing between two and four bear maulings a year, and often the victims are stealthy bow hunters who unwittingly sneak up on bears in their day beds. Pepper spray has been dismissed as a mere condiment in Wyoming — think Cholula Mexican Hot Sauce — and for the first time, archery hunters are being allowed to carry handguns as a means of self-defense. The American Bear Association says mature male black bears can range in weight from 125 pounds all the way up to more than 600 pounds. They typically vary in length between 4 and 6 feet. So, sheer size does not rule out the likelihood that the animal Lujan’s partner saw was an unusually large black bear. The last known grizzly bear in Colorado was killed in the San Juans in 1979 after it attacked a bow hunter who made a lucky stab with one of his arrows while he was being clawed. As recently as September 2006, officials of the Colorado Division of Wildlife went into action after two hunters with grizzly experience saw a sow and two cubs on Independence Pass east of Aspen and reported they were grizzly bears. DOW officials searched on foot without finding any signs, then dispatched a helicopter to spy them from the air. They met

Fewer capital projects planned for 2010 By the numbers

a more than $17,000 cut to Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association marketing, an $8,000 cut to the Yampa Valley Housing Authority, a more than $7,000 cut to special event development and a $2,000 cut from Routt County Search and Rescue.

Parks and recreation In terms of city departments, one of the hardest hit is the Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department. The 2010 budget calls for about $2.4 million in spending for that department, down from more than $2.7 million projected for 2009. Chris Wilson, the department’s director, said cuts include everything from less maintenance of city athletic fields to a reduction in programs for local youths. “We’ve reduced the summer camp programming; we’ve reduced and eliminated some of the satellite programs and after-school programs that we were doing for teens,” Wilson said. Cutting the equivalent of about three full-time positions, primarily seasonal jobs, could mean less upkeep of soccer and softball fields. “Instead of that happening as early as it has in years past, it will be happening later in the season as we bring staff on,” Wilson said. “We will be doing less field painting and less mowing.” City softball programs could see a cut of about $12,500 in 2010, from a projected $44,000 in 2009 to $31,500 next year. Wilson said the number of softball teams could shrink next summer and that players will be asked to take on more roles with a decreased presence from city staff. “Folks will be covering, no pun intended, more bases than they have in the past,” Wilson said. Wilson said his department

will ask community members to take more of a participatory role in providing and maintaining recreation programs. “We believe that with the help of community, we’re going to continue to meet their recreational needs,” he said. “If you have specific questions on your program or your activity and how the budget impacts it, by all means call us or e-mail us.” Call the department at 879-4300 or e-mail Wilson at cwilson@steamboatsprings.net.

Fewer capital projects Overall, the proposed 2010 budget lists about $36 million in total municipal services revenue, with about $36.2 million in total municipal services expenditures. “From an operating standpoint, the budget is balanced,” Litzau said. “We’re recommending using a couple hundred thousand dollars from reserves for capital, but that’s about it.” In 2009, there is a projected difference of more than $11 million in municipal services revenues and expenditures. Capital projects this year largely account for the gap, Litzau said. The projected $11.6 million in 2009 capital projects include $2.2 million for downtown improvements and streetscape, $1.8 million for the New Victory Highway, about $700,000 for a paving program and nearly $600,000 to replace a bus-washing machine. The 2010 budget proposes about $3.9 million in capital projects, primarily $1.7 million for U.S. Highway 40 improvements. City Council President Loui Antonucci said the proposed 2010 budget leaves core city services intact. “There’s some things you

Broncos defense thriving THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ENGLEWOOD

The Denver Broncos’ defense was the laughingstock of the league during the past few years, giving up a profusion of points and forcing precious few turnovers. This is no longer that defense. The Broncos are now actually relying on the defense to rescue them, like it did in a 17-10 win against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday that kept Denver unbeaten through the first month of the season. That defense thwarted a potential tying drive when Champ Bailey swatted away a pass in the end zone on a fourthand-goal play with 1 second remaining. “There are very few situations that can shake us,” cornerback Andre’ Goodman said. In just one offseason, a oncemaligned defense that ranked at or near the bottom in every major statistical category has been transformed into a trustworthy unit. Last year, the team surrendered 28 points a game. This season, it’s given up only 26 points in four games. The Broncos also have forced 10 turnovers, three shy of what they produced all of last season. The porous defense ultimately led to the firing of Mike Shanahan as his squad missed the playoffs for a third straight season. The reclamation project began shortly after rookie coach Josh McDaniels took over. One of his first hires was defensive mastermind Mike Nolan, who implemented a 3-4 scheme. Then came the acquisitions. The Broncos revamped their secondary by adding perennial Pro Bowler Brian Dawkins, Goodman and Renaldo Hill; brought in veteran linebacker Andra Davis; and provided depth on the line with Ronald Fields, Le Kevin Smith and Vonnie Holliday. “In this defense, I see pride, I see hunger, I see a battle for respect,” linebacker Mario Haggan said. Still, respect has been hard to come by. Most pundits remember the past few seasons when Denver was dismal on defense, burning through one coordinator after another trying to shore up numerous deficiencies.

Steamboat Springs High School’s golf team played well Monday, but when you’re facing 84 of the state’s best golfers, it takes more than a couple of pretty good rounds to stay at the top. On a cold and rainy opening day of the state tournament at Highlands Ranch Golf Club in Littleton, Kaelen Gunderson

paced the Sailors with a 75, Scott Ptach shot 76, and Alan Capistron finished with an 81. Steamboat’s team score of 232 left them in ninth place, 20 shots back of Valor Christian. Rock Canyon is in second with a 213, and D’Evelyn is in third at 223. Today is the second and final day of the state tournament. Montrose’s Drew Trujillo

fired the low round of the day, a 6-under-par 66. D’Evelyn’s Sam Phillips is second with a 68, and Matt Porter from Rock Canyon and Wyndham Clark from Valor Christian are tied in third at 69. “Yeah, I really didn’t play that bad,” Gunderson said. “I had a couple bad holes. But it sucks. I came to win. If I’m playing my game, I think I

could win this. I have to forget about (Monday). I know what I’m doing wrong. I just have to keep making good contact. Other than that, (today) should be better.” The Sailors simply had too many putts Monday. On the fast and undulating greens of Highlands Ranch, Steamboat struggled to figure out the flat stick. Rockies enter playoffs as league’s hottest team Arnie Stapleton

DENVER

Just like they did in 2007, the Colorado Rockies open the playoffs in Philadelphia as the hottest team in the National League.

Only this time, they might be without the hottest pitcher in baseball. Lefty Jorge De La Rosa, who went 16-3 after losing his first six decisions, will test his tight left groin in a bullpen session today in Philadelphia in an experiment that will go a long

way toward determining the rest of the Rockies’ rotation. De La Rosa reported feeling better Monday but everything hinges on his side session in Philly. “He was in here at our ballpark earlier (Monday), and he was treated. He feels better

today,” manager Jim Tracy told The Associated Press on his way to the airport Monday. “The bullpen session tomorrow will tell us whether he has a chance to be a part of the divisional series.” See Rockies, page 19

had 33 putts, while Capistron had 36. Capistron, a junior, hit the ball well all day. His 13 greens in regulation was a personal best in tournament play. But a four-putt on No. 2 seemed to set the tone for him. He doublebogeyed that hole and No. 12. He had birdies on Nos. 1 and 18. “Thirty-six putts isn’t going to cut it,” said Capistron. “I hit the ball very good (Monday). A couple distances were off, but I was hitting it really good.” Both Ptach and Gunderson were on pace to shoot low rounds. Gunderson had it going on the front nine. He birdied Nos. 4 and 9 on his way to a 1under-par 35. But when he got to No. 14, his drive found the deep rough, leading to a double bogey. He bogeyed 16 and 17 to come out in 40. Gunderson struggled to control the distance on his irons on the back nine. So while he was hitting his driver well, his irons left him with tougher-than-usual birdie putts. “Just about every one I’d catch it thin and give myself like a 40-foot putt,” Gunderson said. Ptach was at even par through 11 holes after making birdie at

the par-five 11th. There he hit his drive in the fairway bunker. But with a good lie, Ptach hit his utility club from 260 yards onto the green. From there, however, things started to go wrong. He bogeyed 12, 16, 17 and 18. He hit his drive out of bounds on No. 18 before canning a 20footer for bogey. “I want to shoot another solid round of golf,” he said. “There were some good scores that came in (Monday). To improve a little bit, that would be good. Hopefully, I can get into the top 10.” — To reach Luke Graham, call 871-4229 or e-mail lgraham@steamboatpilot.com

Favre wins against former team Minnesota Vikings beat Green Bay Packers, 30-23, on Monday Dave Campbell

NFL

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

MINNEAPOLIS

Brett Favre proved to the Green Bay Packers he has plenty of fire left inside, and in his right arm. Favre’s first game against his former team was all fun for the Minnesota Vikings and all frustration for the Packers, as the graying quarterback connected for three touchFavre down passes and 271 yards in a 3023 victory Monday night. Favre went 24 for 31, without a turnover. He did an awkward body bump with kicker Ryan Longwell, also a former Packer, and stayed poised in the pocket all night. The Vikings (4-0) sacked Favre’s replacement, Aaron Rod-

gers, eight times. Jared Allen was credited with 4 1/2 of them, a career high, including a safety in the fourth quarter that stretched the lead to 16. Rodgers had his first two turnovers of the season, and Favre turned both of them into vintage touchdown passes in the first half. Favre hugged Rodgers, Donald Driver and several other Packers once the game was over. Rodgers tried to engineer the kind of drive his predecessor is famous for, but he came up short. Favre also had plenty of time to throw throughout the game. Rodgers had the exact opposite experience. He finished 26 for 37 for a career-high 384 yards, many of them in desperation down the stretch, and two touchdown passes. The Vikings were relentless in their rush, particularly Allen on left tackle Darryn Colledge,

who left in the third quarter with a right knee injury. Colledge moved from left guard two weeks ago when Chad Clifton got hurt. Rodgers’s receivers let him down, too, though. On fourthand-goal at the 1 in the third quarter, Rodgers found tight end Donald Lee open in the end zone. But the ball bounced off Lee’s chest and onto the turf, as Rodgers snapped his head back with his hands on the sides of his helmet. Pink wristbands, cleats and sideline caps for breast cancer awareness gave the game a different look, but nothing altered the color scheme as much as Favre in purple. This was his sixth game with Minnesota, counting the preseason, but the sight of the guy who led Green Bay to a Super Bowl trophy and took only one losing record in 16 years there wearing the rival team’s jersey was still strange.

5 Rockies pitchers reach double-digit wins De La Rosa, whose 16 wins since June 1 leads the majors, left his last start Saturday night after hurting himself on his 40th pitch, ending his duel with Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw with the NL West title on the line. De La Rosa’s injury left the Rockies’ rotation in limbo. Tracy is committing only to young ace Ubaldo Jimenez, with his darting 100 mph fastball, starting Game 1 on Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park. Aaron Cook, who has yielded one run in 13 innings since returning from a sore shoulder that sidelined him for more than a month, likely will get the nod for Game 2 on Thursday, with Jason Hammel or Jason Marquis starting Game 3 in Denver if De La Rosa can’t. At least the Rockies have

depth — they’re the only team in the majors to have all five starters reach double-digit wins. And they have a brilliant bullpen led by Huston Street, who came to Colorado in the Matt Holliday trade last winter and has saved 35 games in 37 chances. However, their eighth-inning setup man, lefty Franklin Morales, is coming off a seventhinning blowup Saturday night in which he was charged with all five runs in the Dodgers’ division-clinching win.
