■ Activities 1. Fishing

Anglers can pick between the gentle flow of the Yampa River or the tranquility of Elkhead Reservoir for places to drop a line. Loudy-Simpson Park in Craig is also a popular destination for those looking for a convenient place to fish. Fishing licenses are available throughout Craig, and costs range from $1 for a senior citizen annual pass to $56 for an out-of-state season pass. Species range from northern pike and trout in Loudy-Simpson Park to catfish in the Yampa River. When: Year-round Where: Yampa River, Loudy-Simpson Park, 500 S. 2. Hiking

Hiking opportunities abound in Moffat County. Cedar Mountain, only six miles north of Craig on Moffat County Road 7, is a short walk with a panoramic view of the Yampa Valley. There are also multiple trails around Elkhead Reservoir. When: Year-round, weather permitting. Cedar Mountain is day-use only. 3. Biking

Moffat County has several trails that offer world-class mountain biking opportunities. For intermediate to advanced riders, the Yampa Valley Trail offers 100 miles of adventure from Maybell to Dinosaur. Douglas Mountain Boulevard is one of the best ways to take in the Browns Park area. Like the Yampa Valley Trail, Douglas Mountain Boulevard is remote, so be prepared with plenty of water. Vermillion Bluffs and Sevenmile Ridge is 14 miles from Maybell, and offers picturesque views of Northwest Colorado’s cold desert plateaus. The 67-mile trail cuts through the Vermillion Bluffs badlands. For those seeking a short yet rewarding trip, Browns Park features trails that run alongside the Green River. â– Activities 4. Indoor rock climbing

Trapper Fitness has a climbing wall higher than 20 feet. The wall is undergoing a makeover, and will be completely revamped. New harnesses and ropes will help climbers traverse new and challenging routes. Starting in January, rock-climbing classes will be offered. When: Open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Where: 261 Commerce St., Craig Contact: Trapper Fitness, 970-824-6932

5. Tubing and Kayaking

Tubing along the Yampa River is a popular summer activity, as tubers young and old drop-in at Pebble Beach near the Yampa Valley Golf Course and exit the river at Loudy-Simpson Park. The two-mile stretch of river is slow moving, and most trips last less than three hours. When: Summer, but be cautious of high and fast water in May and June Where: Yampa River, Green River

6. Boating

Elkhead Reservoir features more than 900 surface acres of water, fit for anything from canoes to motorboats. With two easily accessible boat ramps, loading and unloading is made easier. All boats entering the reservoir must be inspected for aquatic nuisance species. A daily pass costs $6. When: Boat ramps are open from 6 a.m. to dusk. Boating season ends in the fall. 7. Camping

There is no lack of available space for camping in Moffat County. With spaces ranging from the Craig Campground, multiple spots along the Green River, Split Mountain, Rainbow Park, Echo Park and Deerlodge Park. ■ Activities 8. Museum of Northwest Colorado

Open for more than 40 years, the Museum of Northwest Colorado features artifacts and memorabilia from Moffat County and the Western Slope. Photos and art depict what life was like when Craig was founded in 1908, and pieces of history line the walls and fill the glass cases of the museum. Admission is free, and with multiple floors filled with artifacts there is plenty to explore. When: Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. 9. Cowboy & Gunfighter Museum

With nearly 1,000 artifacts from the Old West, the Cowboy & Gunfighter Museum has an extensive display of cowboy artifacts. Supplied by avid collector Bill Mackin, the museum represents nearly 50 years of effort and collection. Items range from classic belts, boots and buckles to one-of-a-kind pistols, rifles, saddles and art. When: Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. 10. Wyman Museum

Opened in August 2006, the museum features everything from a complete Colorado license plate collection to Clyde the elk. With more than 60 years of collectibles, the museum is packed with curiosities from across the West. The museum also features a blacksmith, who works every Friday during the summer. The summer also includes the Moffat County Mud Runs, when participants spin their wheels trying to get through one of two mud pits on the grounds. Admission to the museum is free. When: Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. 11. Tour wood sculptures at Craig City Park

More than a decade’s worth of artistic wood carvings decorate the picnic, playscape and pool areas at Craig City Park. All carvings were created by regional artists during the city’s annual Whittle the Wood Rendezvous each summer. Where: City Park, Washington Street off East Victory Way

12. Visit Clyde the elk

After Clyde’s mother died during his birth, he was bottle-fed and raised like a pet. Now, Clyde has grown into one of the most majestic buck elks in the valley, but he still loves the company of people. â– Activities 13. Golf at Yampa Valley Golf Course

Play 18 holes, stock up on everything you need at the pro shop and then sit down for a steak at the Tin Cup Grill, all close to the Yampa River and the mountains that make Moffat County the beautiful home it is. 14. Disc golf

Among the softball and soccer fields, Loudy-Simpson Park also offers a free nine-hole disc golf course. Start by the picnic tables, and make your way around the riverfront. Where: Loudy-Simpson Park, 600 S. Ranney St. Contact: Moffat County Parks and Recreation, 970-824-5724

15. See the majestic wild horses

Sand Wash Basin is the largest wild horse herd management area in the state. Nearly 300 wild horses roam on 160,000 acres. Residents and tourists journey to this national wildlife area year-round for the chance to see the real Wild West. Where: Sand Wash Basin, 31 miles west of Craig on U.S. Highway 40 to Colorado Highway 318, then 17 miles northwest on Colo. 318 to the southern entrance. 16. Motor sports

Moffat County has official and single-track courses for dirt bikes and fourwheelers. The Yampa Valley Motocross Track south of town has everything you’d expect in a modern course, while Sand Wash Basin northwest of Craig and Black Mountain northeast of Craig have some of the best singletrack desert and wooded courses in the region. 17. Geocaching

Treasure hunting is alive and well in Moffat County. Geocachers use GPS coordinates to find various objects and prizes hidden by other treasure hunters in a fun, family-oriented game. Where: Throughout the county Contact: Patt McCaffrey, 970-824-5105

18. Bird watching

Northwest Colorado combines some of the best general and destination bird watching in the United States. Birds from all across North and South America summer in the Colorado high country, such as pelicans from the coasts and South American humming birds. Bald and golden eagles also make this area their home and are commonly seen in late winter along the many local rivers. Greater sage-grouse are perhaps the most sought after by avid bird watchers because of their complex mating rituals in early spring. 19. Wildlife viewing

Hunting is more than harvesting animals for fur and meat. Some hunters want nothing more than to see Northwest Colorado’s vast expanse of nature with their own eyes. Join the great tradition of outdoorsmen and see native herds of moose, elk, mule deer, pronghorns, big-horn sheep and other critters in their natural habitats. From its people to its scenic vistas to native wildlife, Moffat County offers professional and amateur photographers a bottomless well of inspiration. Whether it’s riding or racing, there’s plenty of snowmobiling in Moffat County. The Northwest Colorado Snowmobile Club maintains groomed trails at the Black Mountain parking area, Freeman Reservoir parking area and Wilderness Ranch. XMR Racing hosts extreme racing at the annual Wyman Museum Winter Festival each February and participates in other events throughout the year. 22. Cross-country skiing

There are few better workouts and fewer still that can take you to places in deep winter, where the landscape is untouched and wildlife abound. Cross-country skiing also takes place at Yampa Valley Golf Course, 2179 Colorado Highway 394, provides one of the more popular cross-country skiing destinations in Moffat County. 23. Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is one of the best ways for sightseers to easily travel into Northwest Colorado’s wilderness when wintry conditions prevent normal hiking or vehicle access. Contact: Moffat County Visitor Center, 1-800-864-4405

24. Ice fishing

Any of the regional lakes offer fantastic ice fishing in the winter, with Elkhead Reservoir being a 10-minute drive from downtown Craig. Always remember to be safe when treading out on the ice. Avoid snow drifts, which often create thinner ice layers, and make sure ice is at least four inches thick when walking and drilling fishing holes, or six- to eightinches thick for snowmobile traffic. 25. Ice skating

26. View the petroglyphs

On rock faces across Moffat County, one can still see the remnants of thousand-year-old cultures. Petroglyphs and pictographs from the Fremont people can be found throughout Dinosaur National Monument. Or, turn north onto Colorado Highway 318 to take a tour of the Irish Canyon and Vermillion Canyon for more exhibits of the work and history of the Fremont people. 27. Sledding

There are not many things easier or more fun than grabbing a sled, innertube or piece of cardboard and flying down a nearby hill. There are countless places across Craig and Moffat County to go sledding, but locals often flock to Cathy Cisar Hill off 13th and Ranney streets, or the hill in front of Moffat County High School, 900 Finley Lane. 28. Scenic drives

The best way to experience Moffat County’s landscapes are to see them. Call the Moffat County Visitor Center for many routes throughout Northwest Colorado, but here is a local favorite: • Take U.S. Highway 40 west of Craig to Maybell, turn north on Colorado Highway 318. • Follow Colo. 318 northwest into Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge, then into Utah. • Turn south on U.S. Highway 191 just north of the Wyoming border. • Take Highway 191 south through Ashley National Forest, then turn east on U.S. Highway 40 in Vernal, Utah. • Take Highway 40 back to Craig. ■ Activities 29. Big game hunting

Northwest Colorado is home to three elk herds, two of which are the largest in North America, and Moffat County is home to most of the herds’ winter ranges. There are so many animals, including deer and antelope, that there are ample hunting opportunities for everyone, whether you seek trophy heads or meat. 30. Small game hunting

Colorado small game licenses last a full season from April 1 to March 31 the following year and are good for all small game from rabbits to birds to bobcats and beavers. A separate federal water fowl stamp is needed for all ducks and geese. Fishing licenses also are sold separately and have the same season dates as small game licenses. 31. Bowling at Thunder Rolls

A great place for large parties or to spend a leisurely afternoon, this 16-lane bowling alley has a delicious food menu, full bar, pool tables and character to spare. It is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 1 p.m. to midnight Saturdays; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. â– Activities 32. Enjoy a Craig Concert Association show

A town is nothing without culture, and the Craig Concert Association goes a long way in providing that. The local organization hosts six performances each season — one local talent show and five out-of-town acts. These performances range from comedians to acrobats to an eclectic blend of music such as classical, blues, country and jazz. Performances take place from September through May each year in the Moffat County High School auditorium. A single performance ticket costs $20, or season passes can be purchased for $35 for an adult, $10 for a student or $70 for a family. 33. Catch a movie

34. Get in a good workout

Recreation also can come in the form of working up a good sweat. Moffat County offers three full fitness centers for those looking to stay in shape while on vacation. Trapper Fitness Center offers free weights, weight machines and cardio equipment, as well as a climbing wall and basketball and racquetball courts. Holistic Health & Fitness also has free weights and weight machines and is open 24 hours. Curves for Women also is available. Whether you want to practice your aim for pheasant hunting season or get into the competitive circuit, target shooting can be a great way to release stress or an enjoyable family outing. Two gun clubs in Craig offer shotgun trap shooting, and one offers target shooting for rifles. Shooting usually is reserved for members, but the clubs are occasionally open to the public. Located just outside Lay, the Juniper Hot Springs, established in 1880, bubbles out of the ground at 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Plans for the future include a modernized hotel, restaurant and day spa. Currently, campers are welcome to soak in the springs, which are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Day use is $5 per person, and campsites are $10 per night. 48. Elkhead Reservoir

Elkhead Reservoir has a variety of activities to offer, including hiking and biking trails, fishing, boating and camping. With two boat ramps, there is easy access to more than 900 surface acres of water. When: Boat ramps are open from 6 a.m. to dusk. Boating season ends in the fall. 49. Marcia Car

The Marcia Car was the personal railroad car of David H. Moffat, who brought the railroad from Denver to Craig. The Craig Chamber of Commerce purchased the car in 1953 to symbolize Moffat’s dream of building a railroad across the West. When: Tours are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. 50. Iles Grove

Looming over Craig, the Sandrocks represent one of the highest elevations in town. With petroglyphs and a 360-degree view of the city, the Sandrocks are one of the premier spots in Moffat County. Where: 10th Street, Craig

53. Coke Ovens

Standing like oversized beehives, the Coke Ovens are a reminder of Northwest Colorado’s energy-producing past. Originally called charcoal kilns, the four brick ovens were used to smelter ore. The ovens are located west of Sunbeam and can be accessed through private land. The Museum of Northwest Colorado owns the ovens, and while not required, the museum suggests visitors call the museum before visiting the ovens. 54. Loudy-Simpson Park

Loudy-Simpson Park is a treasure trove of outdoor activities. With soccer fields, four baseball and softball fields, plentiful fishing spots, jogging and walking trails and a playground, there is no lack of options. Fishing is especially popular in the spring and summertime, with plenty of space on a pier. There is ice-skating at the Moffat County Ice Arena from October to April. Exceptional camping in Dinosaur National Monument, Deerlodge Park is close to the Yampa River and fishing and rafting opportunities abound. 56. Duffy Mountain

With a summit of 7,090 feet above sea level, Duffy Mountain offers hiking south of Craig, near Hamilton. With access to the Yampa River, boating, camping and fishing are popular activities. 57. Cross Mountain

Cross Mountain is a 7,804-foot mountain more than 45 miles west of Craig. Nine miles wide and four miles long, the mountain is dissected by the Yampa River and offers a chance to view elk, mule deer, antelope, coyote and the occasional black bear and mountain lion. 58. Freeman Reservoir

Freeman Reservoir is a 17-acre reservoir in Routt National Forest with 17 campsites with picnic tables and fire grates, handicap dock and trail and corrals for horses. The campsite is open from June to October, and overnight camping fees are $12. No motorized boats are allowed, but there are multiple spots for fishing. The Green River runs through Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge and Dinosaur National Monument and has carved steep canyons through the landscape. Rapids reach Class 4, and rafting is by permit only. The Green River also offers fishing for brown trout, rainbow trout and catfish. Contact: United States Fish & Wildlife Service, 970-365-3613

60. Swinging Bridge

The Swinging Bridge is an old, wooden-plank, one-lane suspension bridge in Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge that measures eight feet, six inches wide. Two- or three-axle vehicles not weighing more than three tons may brave the drive across. 62. Echo Park

Echo Park is located 38 miles north of Dinosaur National Monument near the confluence of the Green and Yampa rivers. Steamboat Rock (pictured above), where the two rivers converge, is one of the most photographed places in the monument. Echo Park Campground is a popular spot to spend the night, but access to it requires high-clearance vehicles. When: Echo Park Campground is open year-round, but access is dependent on weather. 63. Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge

Browns Park is a high desert valley formed by the Green River in northwest Moffat County. “Browns Hole,” as it used to be known, was a favorite watering hole of the Ute and Shoshone Indians and was also a haven for outlaws such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Browns Park is also home to Two Bar Ranch with log buildings, corrals and sheds built in 1887. Browns Park is a popular wildlife viewing and bird watching area and also offers fishing for license holders. Camping is available, though services are limited. Take along food, water and gasoline. 64. Lodore Hall and Cemetery

Lodore Hall was built in 1911 and was used as a church and school and for meetings and funerals. The hall has been restored to its original condition, and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is still used as a community center. The cemetery nearby is the resting place of John Jarvie and other pioneers. â– Places 65. Dinosaur National Monument

Dinosaur National Monument stretches across the Colorado-Utah border and used to be home to dinosaurs, as well as some of Northwest Colorado’s early pioneers. The Harpers Corner Scenic Drive, a 31-mile (one-way) auto tour, begins from the monument entrance two miles east of the town of Dinosaur and heads north. The drive leads visitors to striking overlooks, some as high as 2,500 feet above the water. With hiking, biking, rafting, fishing, sightseeing, camping and picnic areas, Dinosaur National Monument is a must-see on your trip to Moffat County. 66. Gates of Lodore

At Gates of Lodore in Dinosaur National Monument, spectacular red canyon walls tower above the Green River. The canyon narrows to steep cliffs that squeeze the river into Class 4 rapids. 68. Irish Canyon

73. Vermillion Falls

This 25-foot waterfall located on public land may be viewed from above at mile marker 20 on Colorado Highway 318 in western Moffat County. Stopping by the falls makes a great side trip on your way to Browns Park or Irish Canyon. Contact: Bureau of Land Management, 970-826-5000

74. Yampa River

The Yampa River is a winding landmark in Moffat County’s landscape. The river offers excellent fishing, including brown trout, rainbow trout, channel catfish and northern pike. The river is also a popular playground for those interested in floating the river. Moffat County offers many put-in and takeout spots for short trips. Longer trips also are available down the Yampa or with outfitters on the Green River in western Moffat County. Trapper Mine is a surface coal mine located 6.5 miles southwest of Craig, Colorado. With an average annual production capacity of 2.3 million tons, it is a major Colorado coal producer. The name “Trapper” reflects local history; fur trapping was an important livelihood in the area.
