WELCOME TO MOFFAT COUNTY
Rugged and wild, Moffat County is Colorado’s Last Frontier where wide open spaces hold treasures too rare to be missed. Explore the last free-flowing river in North America, where spectacular canyons reveal ancient petroglyphs and hundreds of species of birds, where Dinosaur National Monument and nearly 2 million acres of public lands leave plenty of room for one of the world’s largest herds of wild horses and North America’s largest herd of migratory elk. Here the views haven’t changed in hundreds of years, and you can experience today what it was like to live like a pioneer, hide out like an outlaw, ride the range with a real cowboy and travel the century old transcontinental Victory Highway. History comes alive on working ranches and in living history museums where locals can proudly point to their pioneer roots, sharing their love of the land and wide-open spaces that are Moffat Country. The 1.7 million acres of pristine, picturesque public lands, abundant wildlife and untamed rivers distinguish Colorado’s Last Frontier. Moffat County is off the grid — and on the mark — for curious explorers and adventurous trailblazers. It’s unbridled and wild, like the nearly 300 wild horses that freely roam the unfenced expanse of Sand Wash Basin. One of the largest migratory elk herds on the continent thrives here, alongside the major population of Sandhill Cranes in the state. The last free-flowing river of the West, the Yampa, and the Green river appear largely the same way they did when John Wesley Powell first navigated them in 1869. Whether the treasures of Colorado’s Last Frontier are discovered with an outfitter or independently with a map and compass, this unspoiled landscape claims an exclusive spot on the traveler’s bucket list. While you may not be able to do it all while you are here, we are always certain to welcome you back to Moffat Country! WELCOME TO MOFFAT COUNTY!

ACTIVITIES 1. Hunting
Northwest Colorado is home to a number of elk herds, two of which are the largest in North America. The coolest part is that most of the elk herds’ winter ranges reside in Moffat County. Many animals, including deer and antelope, provide ample hunting opportunities for everyone, whether you seek trophy heads or meat. Colorado small game licenses last a full season from April 1 to March 31 the following year and are good for all small game from rabbits to birds to bobcats and beavers, with different season dates for different types of animals. Separate federal and state waterfowl stamps are needed for all ducks and geese. Fishing licenses also are sold separately and have the same season dates as small game licenses. When: August to January Where: Throughout Moffat County For more: Colorado Division of Wildlife, 970-878-6090, or www.wildlife.state.co.us; Sportsman Information, 970-824-3046, or www.visitmoffatcounty.com
2. Fishing
Anglers can pick between the gentle flow of the Yampa River or the tranquility of Elkhead Reservoir for places to drop a line. Loudy-Simpson Park in Craig is also a popular destination for those looking for a convenient place to fish. The pond at Loundy-Simpson was dredged and renovated in 2014, making the fishing hole better than ever. Glen Sherman Park at Wyman Museum also is open to anglers ages 16 and younger and 64 and older, as well as those with disabilities. Fishing licenses are available throughout Craig, and costs range from $1 for a senior citizen annual pass to $56 for an out-of-state annual pass. Species range from northern pike and trout in Loudy-Simpson Park to catfish in the Yampa River. When: Year-round Where: Yampa River; Loudy-Simpson Park, 500 S. Take U.S. Highway 40 west from Craig one mile, turn right on County Road 7, go north for 5 miles then turn right onto a dirt road to the Cedar Mountain Access. Other phenomenal hiking adventures can be found in Dinosaur National Monument ranging from easy to challenging. You can also find multiple trails around Elkhead Reservoir, Freeman Reservoir and on Moffat County’s many other mountains. When: Year-round, weather permitting. Cedar Mountain is day-use only. 4. Biking
Moffat County has several multiple-use trails that offer world-class mountain biking opportunities. For intermediate to advanced riders, the Yampa Valley Trail offers 100 miles of adventure from Maybell to Dinosaur National Monument. Douglas Mountain Boulevard is one of the best ways to take in the Browns Park area. Like the Yampa Valley Trail, Douglas Mountain Boulevard is remote, so be prepared with plenty of water. Vermillion Bluffs and Sevenmile Ridge is 14 miles from Maybell and offers picturesque views of Northwest Colorado’s cold desert plateaus. The 67-mile trail cuts through the Vermillion Bluffs badlands. For those seeking a short yet rewarding trip, Browns Park features trails that run alongside the Green River. When: Summer and as weather permits Where: Throughout Moffat County For more: Bureau of Land Management, 970-826-5000, or www.blm.gov
5. Tubing and kayaking
Tubing along the Yampa River is a popular summer activity, as tubers young and old drop-in at Pebble Beach near Yampa Valley Golf Course and exit the river at LoudySimpson Park. The three-mile stretch of river is slow moving, and most trips last less than three hours. Floaters can enter the river at other public access sites, including the one at Double Bridges near Hayden. 2014 - 2015 | WWW.CRAIGDAILYPRESS.COM | 9

Opened in August 2006, the museum features everything from a complete Colorado license plate collection to Junior the elk. The museum was founded by Moffat County resident Lou Wyman, who has an impressive collection of big machinery, Moffat County artifacts and a train car. 10. Visit Junior the elk
After the death of Wyman Museum mainstay Clyde the Elk in October 2012 at the age of 18, and owner Lou Wyman was unsure whether or not he would find a replacement. Inquiries by community members made the decision easy for Wyman, and shortly after Clyde’s death, Junior the Elk arrived at his new home at the museum. Brought in from Plateau Valley Elk Ranch near Rifle, the 3-year-old elk already has a six-point rack and the potential to be one big elk. Museum staff members reported that Junior settled into his home quickly and is currently accepting visitors. Where: 94350 E. Bald and golden eagles also make Moffat County their home and are commonly seen in late winter along the many local rivers. Greater sage grouse are perhaps the most sought after by avid bird watchers because of their complex mating rituals in early spring.
