on’t expect to find anything healthy to eat at a college football game. No one is selling veggie burgers, smoothies or fruit salads. You can, however, expect to find foot-long hot dogs, brats and burgers glistening with grease. Here’s the good news: There is no line for the ladies bathroom. Repeat: No line. I had to pinch myself just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I know, I know. Just a few short weeks ago I made some foolish anti-football remarks. But that was before I knew about the bathroom situation. Had anyone told me I would not have to wait in line, I may have rushed out to buy season tickets for the Broncos. Here’s how the football turnaround happened: While visiting my 88-yearold mother, she surprised me with a ticket to the Penn StateNorthwestern football game. She lives across the street from the stadium in Evanston, Ill.,
LIFE IN THE ’BOAT
Joanne Palmer and she and my brother have season tickets. Armed with her walking stick to ward off any stampeding vegetarians, we joined the parade of purple people walking to the game. I dressed warmer than I would for a day of skiing in a down jacket topped with a purple fleece poncho that reached my knees. Settling into our seats, I discovered the nice football people had left us purple rain ponchos in case hypothermia threatened. I busied myself unwrapping my freebie and forgot to look down on the field. “What’s happening? Why is everyone so far apart?” I asked my brother.
“It’s the kickoff.” “Got it,” I replied, determined to understand a thing or two about the game before it was over. “Goooo Cats,” a woman three rows back screeched in a nails-on-the-blackboard type of voice that could mean only one thing: She had tipped back one too many beers at the tailgate party prior to the game. Before I could wrap my head around the fact that I would have to spend the next three hours listening to the “Tailgate Tippler,” something alarming caught my eye. “Um, someone should tell the coach he has toilet paper hanging out of his pants.” “That’s the playbook,” my brother answered without taking his eyes off the game. My mother coached me on some key football terminology such as downs and distance. She also provided the See Palmer, page 13

Steamboat 700 petitioners submit 600 signatures Let’s Vote committee required to collect 829 signatures by Nov. 12 to force referendum of annexation STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
The committee that hopes to bring the city of Steamboat Springs’ annexation of Steam boat 700 to referendum submit ted its first collection of signa tures Tuesday. City Clerk Julie Franklin confirmed Wednesday that the committee, known as Let’s Vote, has submitted 14 petitions. The group says those petitions con tain more than 600 signatures from city residents. Petitioners have until Nov. 12 to submit the 829 signatures necessary to trig ger the city’s referendum pro cess. “The response from voters has been overwhelmingly favor able when asked if they would like to vote on the Steamboat 700 annexation,” Let’s Vote spokes man Tim Rowse said. “The peti
tion committee is impressed by how many voters are concerned about the annexation and want to learn more.” Rowse said the committee already has checked its signa tures against the city’s voter reg istration rolls. The city also will verify the signatures. Franklin said a number of clerical steps must be taken before she can begin that process. “I haven’t even gotten to the point of verifying them,” Franklin said. Only signatures from city res idents who write their address as it is listed on their voter registra tion will be counted. In addition to the city’s verification process, those who opposed the referen dum will be allowed to view the petition and challenge any of the signatures. Volunteers are canvassing the city seeking signatures. Petitions also are available to sign at Elk
River Guns and Orange Peel Bicycles. Rowse said there are an additional 46 petitions that volunteers have not returned. Given that the first 14 petitions garnered more than 600 signa tures, Rowse said the committee is comfortable that it will meet the requirement of 829 signa tures. “I’d say we’re fairly confident that will happen,” he said. Steamboat 700 is a 487-acre annexation approved by the Steamboat Springs City Council on Oct. 13 in a 4-3 vote. It pro poses about 2,000 homes and 380,000 square feet of commer cial space just west of the cur rent city limits. Some say Steamboat 700 would give the city a smart place to grow, provide affordable housing and help pay for needed city improvements; others say the annexation is too large, is happening too fast and does not

Routt County’s first election conducted exclusively with mail ballots isn’t likely to be its last. “I’m really pleased with the process,” Routt County Clerk and Recorder Kay Weinland said Wednesday, the day after the election. “I do plan to continue with the mail-ballot election as often as statutorily allowed.” That means an all-mail-bal lot format may continue to be used in August primary and November odd-year elections in Routt County. san, general elections held in November of even-numbered years. Those elections, includ ing Routt County’s 2010 general election, will continue to offer two weeks of early voting, mailin ballots and Election Day vot ing at polling places across the county, Weinland said. “It was efficient, and the fact that we had results by 7:30 (p.m.) was great,” Weinland said about this year’s election. “I think it gave voters an opportunity to vote on their own time and in the comfort of their own home.”
At 36 percent, turnout was lower this year than in previ ous odd-year elections in Routt County. There was 57 percent turnout in 2007, 56 percent in 2005 and 51 percent in 2003. Weinland said it’s not fair to blame the election’s format for reduced turnout and noted that the ballot contained few deci sions. “I think we would have had a really low turnout regardless,” Weinland said. Routt County’s turnout was comparable to other areas of the state. The Denver Post reported turnout in several Front Range counties at 25 to 35 percent. In Moffat County, turnout was 11.5 percent. As an absent owner that rents our home our hot tub had always been my biggest problem. I found Spa Country because they were the Marquis distributor in NW Colorado. They helped get my tub in operation, replaced the cover, and have serviced our tub for three years. Austin, one of the owners in Craig, has serviced our tub on the frequency agreed depending on whether it is ski season or summer season in Steamboat Springs. BOCES won’t handle funds STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
The Northwest Colorado Board of Cooperative Educa tional Services will not be given federal No Child Left Behind Act funding for title programs to disburse to its six member school districts. A letter Wednesday from Robert Hammond, the deputy commissioner of the Colorado Department of Education, stated that the funds would be distributed directly to the districts instead of through BOCES. Ordinarily, federal title funds for programs, such as improving the academic achievement for the disadvantaged and training
and recruiting principals and teachers, are distributed by the federal government to the state Education Department and on to BOCES. Then, BOCES distributes the funds to districts. Last spring, the Steamboat Springs School District notified the Education Department that it had not received its share of $777,000 in federal title funding owed to the member districts. The department told the district that those funds had been given to BOCES. BOCES used the money for operational costs. BOCES is a cooperative agency that provides statemandated special education services to six school districts in Northwest Colorado, including
Steamboat Springs, Hayden and South Routt. According to Hammond’s letter, the decision to cut BOCES out of the disbursal process will affect the 2009-10 school year, and an evaluation to determine whether to continue distributing federal money directly to districts will be made April 30. The action was taken amid the Education Department’s ongoing review of the financial situation at BOCES, the letter stated. Steamboat Springs School District Superintendent Shalee Cunningham said the Educa tion Department told the superintendents that the districts might start receiving the See BOCES, page 11

After an attempt to cre ate a senior living community south of Steamboat Springs was thwarted by land prob lems in late 2008, Yampa Valley Medical Center is taking the first steps toward trying again. YVMC has targeted local baby boomers and senior resi dents with a survey about the demands for senior living for their parents. A first batch
of postcards went out in the mail, and anyone interested can return the postcard to receive the survey. YVMC CEO Karl Gills said the hospital is scoping out four new sites in town to create “a senior community of inde pendent living, assisted living, memory assistance and skilled care.” If the plan gets a positive response, construction on the site could begin in 2011 or 2012, he said. The size of the commu nity would largely be dependent
on survey responses, he said. “At the Doak Walker Care Center, we have many parents of local children desiring to move to Steamboat Springs to be clos er to their children,” Gills said. Hospital spokeswoman Chri stine McKelvie said the type of campus being discussed doesn’t exist in Routt County. “I think that there are more options now than there used to be years ago for seniors, but in this county, we don’t have all of See Survey, page 12

Communism’s enablers and excusers Cal Thomas
TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
On Nov. 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall was pulled down to the consternation of leftists, who still had faith socialism could work with the right leaders, and to the delight of conservatives, who believed that socialism and communism guaranteed mutually shared poverty. Two years later, the Soviet Union crumbled. Soviet communism might not have endured for 70 years had it not been for Thomas enablers in academia, religion and journalism. Lloyd Billingsley has written about them in “The Generation That Knew Not Josef,” as in Stalin. When the wall fell, leftists could not bring themselves to admit they had been wrong, much less apologize for their misplaced faith. So they did what they do
best: they made excuses. The Media Research Center has compiled reports, editorials, articles and commentary that extend throughout the past 22 years revealing how the preFox, pre-talk-radio liberal media were the handmaidens of one of the greatest totalitarian evils to strike the planet. The underlying myth in much of their “reporting,” notes the MRC’s Rich Noyes, was that free market capitalism was a greater threat to human happiness than communism. These quotes, in light of history, resemble a “Saturday Night Live” comedy skit. In 1987, before the wall collapsed, CBS anchor Dan Rather said, “Despite what many Americans think, most Soviets do not yearn for capitalism or Western-style democracy.” Strobe Talbott, then of Time magazine and soon to be an influential member of the Clinton administration, wrote
Jan. 1, 1990, that Soviet leader Mikhail “Gorbachev is helping the West by showing that the Soviet threat isn’t what it used to be, and what’s more, that it never was.” How is it possible to simultaneously have been a threat but not a threat? The millions who died in gulags, starved to death or were assassinated might have a different interpretation of Russian history under communism. After the liberation of Eastern Europe, according to the MRC, some journalists attacked capitalism for “exploiting” the newly freed workers. A Los Angeles Times reporter touted “communism’s ‘good old days,’ when the hand of the state crushed personal freedom but ensured that people were housed, employed and had enough to eat.” In fact, Soviet communism spread misery through its own 12 time zones and in many parts of the world, though NBC’s John Chancellor refused to see it. In 1991, See Thomas, page 9

In 2003, I was on a trip to Iraq and had arranged an appointment in the Green Zone with a member of what was then the Iraqi Governing Council. Security was tight. I was with my Iraqi translator, a middle-aged man who once had been a teacher. When we arrived at the council, after a long walk, I showed my ID to two young uniformed U.S. soldiers. They told me to wait, went inside and out Friedman came a man wearing civilian clothes, one of those fishing vests and an Australian bush hat. He never properly identified himself, but it was obvious that he was a “civilian contractor” from the logo on his shirt. When I tried to explain why we were there, he literally told me to shut

my mouth until I was told to speak. Then he told my Iraqi translator to sit in the blistering heat while he escorted me — the American — inside to see if our Iraqi interviewee was available. I have to admit it: Both my translator and I really wanted to just punch his lights out. But I kept thinking to myself: “Who does this guy report to? If I get in his face and he comes after me, to whom do I complain?” That was my first encounter with one of the many private security guards, service suppliers and aid workers — aka civilian contractors — who have since become an integral part of the U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some were even used at Abu Ghraib to do “enhanced interrogations” — aka torture — of suspected terrorists. Today, there is no operation that is too sensitive not to outsource to the private sector. As we debate how many more troops to dispatch to Afghanistan, it might
be a good time to also debate just how far we’ve already gone in hiring private contractors to do jobs that the State Department, Pentagon and CIA once did on their own. A good place to start is with Middlebury College professor Allison Stanger’s new book on this subject, “One Nation Under Contract: The Outsourcing of American Power and the Future of Foreign Policy.” Every year, more and more of the core business of national security — diplomacy, development, defense and even intelligence — “is being shifted into the hands of private contractors — much more than our public realizes,” Stanger said to me. One big reason why we’ve been able to fight the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq with so few allies is because we’ve basically hired the help. “Afghanistan and Iraq,” explained Stanger, “are our first contractors’ wars, See Friedman, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

as the Soviet coup unraveled, Chancellor said, “the problem isn’t communism; nobody even talked about communism this week. The problem is shortages.” Wait, according to the Los Angeles Times reporter, there were no shortages because everyone was housed, employed and had enough to eat? Both can’t be true. Ted Turner, the former CNN mogul, is always good for an outlandish quote, and when it came to Soviet Russia, he offered a cornucopia of selfdeluded statements, none better than this one: Gorbachev is “moving faster than Jesus Christ did.” But Time magazine bested
him with this howler when it described Gorbachev as “the communist pope and the Soviet Martin Luther.” Never one to admit failure for its favorite theories, the Left still refuses to acknowledge its errors. Members simply moved on to new errors, in this case to Cuba. In 2006, an Associated Press story said, “For all its flaws, life in Cuba has its comforts. Many Cubans take pride in their free education system, high literacy rates and top-notch doctors. Ardent Castro supporters say life in the United States, in contrast, seems selfish, superficial and — despite its riches — ultimately unsatisfying.” Is that why so many Cubans
have risked their lives to reach America? Again, Ted Turner about North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il: “I saw a lot of people over there. They were thin and they were riding bicycles instead of driving cars.” An incredulous Wolf Blitzer replied, “A lot of those people are starving.” Turner said, “I didn’t see any brutality.” The point is not only to hold the media accountable for their past sins, but also to remind them they are making the same mistakes today with different enemies — radical Islam and the Chinese brand of communism. No wonder the public trusts them about as much as they trust Congress.

posing a huge nation-building project for Afghanistan to replace its dysfunctional government with a state that can deliver for the Afghan people so they won’t side with the Taliban. I might be more open to that project if we had a true global alliance to share the burden of an effort that will take decades. But we don’t. European publics do not favor this war, and our allies will only pony up just enough troops to get their official “Frequent U.S. Ally Card” renewed. The government may operate more efficiently with private contractors. And outsourcing can often deliver real innovation, especially in economic development. Still, I’m old-fashioned: When America is acting abroad, I prefer our public services to be provided as much as possible by public servants motivated by, and schooled in, the common good and simple patriotism — not profits or private ambitions.

differing from previous interventions in their unprecedented reliance on the private sector for all aspects of their execution. According to the Congressional Research Service, contractors in 2009 accounted for 48 percent of the Defense Department work force in Iraq and 57 percent in Afghanistan. And the Pentagon is not the only government agency deploying contractors; the State Department and Usaid make extensive use of them, as well. Contractors provide security for key personnel and sites, including our embassies; feed, clothe and house our troops; train army and police units; and even oversee other contractors. Without a multinational contractor force to fill the gap, we would need a draft to execute these twin interventions.” Or, we would need real allies. I am not against outsourcing, improving government efficiency or hiring the best people to per-
form specialized tasks. But we’ve fallen into a pattern of outsourcing some of the very core tasks of government — interrogation, security, democracy promotion. As more and more of this government work gets contracted and then subcontracted — or as Stanger puts it, “when money and instructions change hands multiple times in a foreign country” — the public interest can get lost, and abuse and corruption get invited in. We’re also building a contractor-industrialcomplex in Washington that has an economic interest in foreign expeditions. Doesn’t make it wrong; does make you want to be watchful. In 2008, notes Stanger, roughly 80 percent of the State Department’s requested budget went out the door in the form of contracts and grants. The Army’s primary support contractor in Iraq, KBR, reportedly has some 17,000 direct-hire employees there. The U.S. military now is pro-

Official: Student programs not affected BOCES continued from 5 federal funds directly from the state. Cunningham said she didn’t think the Education Department had a choice. “It’s radical action,” she said. “It’s very, very serious. I have not seen this before.” Education Department spokesman Mark Stevens said the action taken toward BOCES was uncommon. “I think it’s safe to say it’s very unusual,” he said. “I can’t say for a fact it hasn’t happened before. It’s very unusual.” The letter gave five reasons for giving the federal title funds directly to the districts instead of through BOCES: ■ Inability to assure NCLB funds are being properly accounted for, managed and used ■ Use of NCLB funds to support special education and other programs at the Northwest BOCES ■ Failure by the Northwest BOCES to timely reimburse member districts for their 200809 NCLB expenditures
■ Violation of the federal “Case Management Improve ment Act” applicable to federally funded programs ■ Accrual of interest on federal funds The letter stated that “assisting individual districts with the fiscal management” of the federal funds would lead to more timely reimbursements this year after BOCES’ “failure” to reimburse districts last year. “I think it’s concerning, but I think for the rest of this school year, the districts will be able to manage the funds and move forward,” BOCES Executive Director Jane Toothaker said. This is the first formal step the Education Department has taken related to BOCES, which has been struggling with financial issues. In September, BOCES revealed that it had overspent its 2008-09 budget by nearly $317,000 and needed to increase assessments for services in 2009-10 by more than $481,000. Assessments for the 2009-10 school year originally were presented in May, when
the districts were drafting their budgets. BOCES plans to use federal stimulus funding for special education to help make up last year’s deficit. Toothaker has proposed using the same funding and making budget cuts to help reduce this year’s increased assessments for services. Toothaker told member districts that BOCES would cut them checks for the $777,000 in federal title program funding when they pay this year’s assessments. Hammond’s letter stated that BOCES must resolve its “current fiscal issues” to be considered for providing services to the districts in 201011. “We definitely want to resolve the issue, and I think we are,” Toothaker said. Toothaker said because the money flowed through the districts anyway, programs it funds for students wouldn’t be affected.

ing it harder to do business in Steamboat. “What I would like the council to do is, let’s put out a call to the community and ask if there are any things the city is doing that makes it hard to live and work here,” Hermacinski said. If any such regulations are found, Hermacinski said the city should look at whether it is feasible to lift them at least until the economy improves. Myller said that if petitioners gather enough signatures and the Steamboat 700 annexation is subsequently defeated in a citywide vote, council members will discuss how the city’s long-term needs can be accommodated without expanding city limits. “If the community doesn’t want to grow, I think we have some things to do,” Myller said. Engelken said council members would need to monitor the city’s revenues closely and make budget adjustments if necessary. Reisman said his top priority is to work with developers, the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. and others to come up with ideas to jump-start the economy.
Doak Walker Care Center is at capacity them together on one campus, and we’re missing a memory care unit altogether,” she said. YVMC floated the idea of building a care community named “The Bridges at Steamboat” south of the Yampa River just south of Steamboat.

Councilman Jon Quinn said Hermacinski has his support. “She’s very detail-oriented and very knowledgeable,” Quinn said. “She’s always extremely prepared and insightful.” Other council members contacted Wednesday would not comment on whom they would like to see as president. However, Reisman and Councilman Scott Myller did disqualify themselves from consideration. The selection of a council president and president pro tem is on the agenda for a mostly ceremonial council meeting Tuesday, when outgoing City Council members Antonucci and Steve Ivancie will say goodbye, and the new council members will take an oath of office. The transition from one council to the next looks to be much less dramatic than in 2007, when all incumbents were defeated, and five new members joined the body and immediately set out to undo some policies and decisions of the previous council. “I don’t think you’ll see a dramatic shift in terms of policy direction,” Quinn said. “I’m just glad (the election is) over, frankly, and I’m excited to
move forward with this group.” Although Tuesday’s meeting mostly will consist of orientation and formalities, the council will dive into several substantive issues at its Nov. 17 meeting. Items tentatively scheduled on that agenda include Routt County Regional Building Department fee increases, interviews of applicants to the Urban Redevelopment Area Advisory Committee, requests for increased zoning at the base of Steamboat Ski Area and two ordinances related to changes to the city’s affordable housing ordinance. Engelken, whose wife, Nancy, is the city’s community housing coordinator, said he would decide whether to step down regarding issues involving his wife on a case-by-case basis. For example, if the council is asked to review a development proposal with a controversial community housing plan, and his wife has made a recommendation, Engelken said he would step down. “But if it is a policy issue,” Engelken said, “I would like to take part in that.” Members of the new council said economic and growth issues are dominating their priority lists. Hermacinski said one of her top priorities is to engage in a review of city regulations that might be mak-

Football isn’t so bad after all Palmer continued from 2 back story on the teams. Penn State is ranked 11th, while poor ol’ NU isn’t even good enough to be on the list. Safe to say, NU was the underdog. Nevertheless, NU scored the first two touchdowns, and the fans went wild. Horns blew, silver confetti was thrown in the air and two guys dressed like hot dogs used an oversized slingshot to catapult T-shirts into the stands. “Go Caaaaats!” squawked the Tippler. A cool breeze blew through the stadium, and I huddled closer to my family. Hot chocolate was for sale in a commemorative mug for $6.75, but I decided to stamp my feet instead. “C’mon NU,” brayed the Tippler. I hoped the Tippler would develop laryngitis before the end of the game or that a T-shirt rocketed into the stands would knock her unconscious. Despite her behavior, I had to admit I was enjoying myself. The eye candy on the field warmed me up, the beat of the band energized me, and then there was the all-important no waiting in line bathroom thing. Sadly, in the fourth quarter, Penn State scored three touchdowns, and fickle fans around us began to leave. Not the Tippler. She sounded like a strangled foghorn as she croaked, “C’mon NU, get your head into the game.” We stayed until the end — after all, there was a fireworks show — and jumped up and down to stay warm. On the way home, I decided football wasn’t so bad, but the next time I’m bringing a battery-operated heater and earplugs.

out was 34 percent for a Vail Town Council election, according to Vail Daily. Voter turnout was about 42 percent in Grand County, according to Sky-Hi Daily News. Weinland first proposed an all-mail-ballot election to save money during a county budget crisis. “I’m really anxious to put together the numbers and see how much it saved,” said Weinland, who originally estimated that the format would save the county $40,000 this year. Weinland said she intends to reconvene the Citizen Election Review Committee that was created after the 2006 election to weigh in on the success of this year’s election and the prospect
of using the same format in future elections. “The community perception of how this worked ought to be addressed by more than her office, and that’s what that committee is for,” said local attorney Mark Fischer, chairman of the election committee. Committee member Catherine Carson said she thought this year’s election “went very well” but said she would like to talk about increasing educational efforts and accessibility. “Certainly, for the odd-numbered years it is cost-effective and a great way to run an election,” Carson said. Twenty-two ballots were not counted in this year’s election because they were not signed or because the voter’s signature did not resemble the signature on
file with the county. Weinland said the 22 voters have been contacted. “We write them a letter,” she said. “They have until the close of business on Nov. 12 to come in and confirm their ballot.” Additionally, about 16,000 ballots were returned to the county as undeliverable because of out-of-date addresses or other problems, and never claimed. Weinland said she has ideas to reduce that number but also guessed that many of the ballots belonged to voters who did not update their mailing address because they had no intention of voting in this year’s election. “I’m really sad that voters feel that way … but that’s something I can’t do anything about,” Weinland said.

MLB POSTSEASON
Year strong for some, empty for others
The 2009 elk and deer season is about to enter the fourth quarter, and how things are going depends on who you ask. If you pulled Jon Wade aside, for instance, a certain impression would be unmistakable. Wade, who works in Steam boat Springs at Colorado Group Realty, picked up his first Colorado elk during the second of the four available rifle seasons. He woke up early, drove to some ground a buddy had given him permission to hunt on, walked over a ridge and took a shot almost immediately. “They weren’t running, but they definitely weren’t walking, so I went down to try to shoot off my knees, but couldn’t see,” he said. “I pressed on downhill, stood back up and shot off hand.” It took him less than an hour to fill his tag, and he was back to work, the elk hauled out, skinned and taken care of by the time his co-workers were returning from lunch. “I thought, ‘Can I shoot one this soon?’” he said, having been mentally prepared for a long morning stalking his prey. “But I said, ‘Ya know, I’ll take a gift right now.’” Dell Bean, meanwhile, said he’s still waiting on his present. Bean runs Black Elk Out fitters out of Fort Collins and outfits elk and deer trips in the North Park region. He said he’s managed to help provide some good opportunities and an average number of kills for his clients. It hasn’t been easy, though. “It’s been rough,” he said with a grumble. “It’s just been really slow. Really slow.” Those hunters who have had trouble have issued complaints as regular as the weather. Usually, in fact, the problem

Steamboat Springs High School Assistant Principal Marty Lamansky likes to joke that he wishes he could hire senior Kylee Swiggart to run all student organized events. That might be a little too much to ask, however, considering Swiggart’s fully loaded schedule. In addition to just wrapping up volleyball and working on
her tennis game, Swiggart is president of her class, president of the Future Business Leaders of America at the school, in the Leadership Class and a vital member of the Police Committee. Oh, and she has a 4.0 gradepoint average. For all these things, Swig gart has been named one of 20 state finalists for the 2009 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. More than 50,000 seniors applied nationwide, and 10,848
were selected as finalists. The award looks at excellence in academics, athletics, and community and school leadership. On Saturday, one male and one female will be named Colorado winners. They will be in contention for the national title Dec. 11 in New York City. “Kylee is like your dream student,” Lamansky said. “She’s very enthusiastic. She’s See Swiggart, page 20
Jorge Posada tapped Andy Pettitte on the chest when it was time to leave. Derek Jeter watched from the mound, knowing exactly what it meant. Along with Mariano Rivera, who was waiting in the bullpen, they have been the heart of the New York Yankees for 14 seasons. And now, after the Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-3, in Game 6 on Wednesday night, the group finally has its fifth World Series championship. The lone holdovers from the mid-1990s, when the Yankees began their run of four titles in five years were all fittingly involved in the win Wednesday. When Mark Teixeira caught the final out, Pettitte raced from the dugout, Jeter threw his hands in the air and jumped, Rivera ran from the mound toward first base and pumped his fist, Posada leaped from behind the plate but stood back from the big scrum, taking it all in for an extended moment. They were back on top. No player had won five titles with one team since Yogi Berra (10 titles), Mickey Mantle (seven) and Whitey Ford (six) in 1962 did it as Yankees, according to STATS LLC. Back in 1996 when Jeter was the Rookie of the Year, he told Berra that he was going to top his 10 World Series rings. But things didn’t work out that way for baseball’s last dynasty. It took nine years for the bunch to make it back to the top and give Yankees owner George Steinbrenner the franchise’s 27th title. Since their run of three straight championships ended against Arizona in 2001, the Yankees spent $1.66 billion trying to win that elusive crown but time and again, as the Yankees failed, Jeter said the team is not the same as those that won in ’96 and 1998-2000.

Athlete of the Week
Mitch Lekarczyk
School: Steamboat Springs Year: Senior Age: 17 Height: 6 feet Sport: Football Why Lekarczyk: The Steamboat linebacker had five tackles in a 58-13 win against Buena Vista on Friday. In the season, Lekarczyk is leading the Sailors with 10 tackles a game. That number also puts him seventh in Class 3A. Quotable: “Well, our problem on defense last year, and I mean we’re playing with a lot of the same guys that played last year, was if a team got a touchdown on us early we’d just give up. This year during the Palisade game we were down, 14-7. We went into the locker room, and I said, ‘We’re not giving up this year.’ We came out, got a stop and the offense did what it needed to.” — Lekarczyk Send your nominations for Athlete of the Week to sports@steamboatpilot.com.

The Denver Broncos still are smarting from their beatdown at Baltimore, and they’re pledging not to let themselves get pummeled by Pittsburgh. The main message when coach Josh McDaniels installed his game plan Wednesday was that the Broncos need to get back to the basics of winning the physical matchups. It’s what
they did during their 6-0 start, a stretch that came to a crashing halt in a 30-7 blowout loss at Baltimore last week. “Yeah, they beat us up pretty good, no question about it,” Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton said. “We feel like we’ve got a physical football team, and certainly Pittsburgh prides themselves on that, too. So, it’ll be a hard-hitting game, and whoever can win that battle

is going to have a good chance to win.” The Broncos were the NFL’s biggest surprise when they took an unblemished record into November. Under the brash, 33-year-old McDaniels, they proved wellcoached, disciplined and physical. And they quieted any remaining doubters by beating Dallas, New England and San Diego in successive weeks in October. Then came the blowout at Baltimore, and now the league will learn if they have a bounceback in them that’s anywhere near as impressive as their stunning start. They figure the ricochet begins with being the ones to deliver most of the punishment. Physicality can be a nebulous notion in the NFL. What constitutes being more physical than one’s opponent? Is it mostly about size, strength, speed, matchups, gumption? “It’s about everything,” Orton said. “It’s about practice. You can’t just practice soft for three or four days and expect to go out and play a physical game.”

Avs win 5th straight at home NHL DENVER
Milan Hejduk had two goals and an assist, and Peter Budaj — recovered from swine flu — stopped 28 shots in his first start of the season, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-1 vic tory against the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday night. Marek Svatos also scored a goal, David Jones added an empty netter, and Paul Stastny had three assists. The Avalanche snapped a two-game skid to remain on top of the Western Conference stand ings and tie Pittsburgh for the overall lead. Colorado also improved to 5-0 at the Pepsi Center, one win away from tying its best home start since moving to the Mile High City. Budaj was brilliant in goal, allowing only Ed Jovanovski’s power-play goal midway through the third period. Trailing 2-1 with just more than a minute remaining, the Coyotes pulled goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, lead

ing to Jones’ breakaway goal. Just 19 seconds later, Hejduk scored his second of the night. The 27-year-old Budaj was scheduled to make his first start Oct. 23 against Carolina, but was scratched because of flu-like symptoms. It turned out to be swine flu, causing Budaj to miss four games. With Budaj back and healthy, Craig Anderson finally got a night off. Anderson made a franchiserecord 15 straight starts to begin the season, breaking the mark that belonged to Mario Gosselin, who made nine straight starts to open the 1987-88 season. Bryzgalov made 25 saves as the Coyotes dropped their second straight game. Bryzgalov has one of the top goals-against averages in the NHL, allowing less than two goals a game. The Avalanche scored a pow er-play goal just 57 seconds into the game when Hejduk tipped in Kyle Quincey’s slap shot from the blue line.

Colorado Avalanche forward Cody McLeod has been activated from injured reserve after missing six games after an inadvertent stick to his left eye. McLeod will wear a protective visor on his helmet Wednesday night as the Avalanche host the Phoenix Coyotes. The 25-year-old enforcer was hit above the eye in a game at Minnesota on Oct. 21. He still managed to get off the shot that led to Kyle Quincey’s rebound goal. McLeod said it took about a week for the blurriness to clear from his eye. He has three goals and two assists this season. McLeod also leads the team in penalty minutes with 20. — The Associated Press

Chauncey Billups and Car melo Anthony woke up the unbeaten Nuggets in a 44-point third quarter and Denver con tinued its best start since 198586 with a 122-94 victory against the winless New Jersey Nets on Wednesday night. The win was the fifth straight for Denver, one shy of the 85-86 start, and it handed the Nets their fifth straight loss, tying the worst start in franchise history, set in 1996-97. Ironically, New Jersey led 51-50 at intermission until Denver put on an offensive show in the third quarter, hitting 17 of 25 shots and outscoring
Devin Harris and four other injured players. Eduardo Najera had 14 points for New Jersey in his first start of the season. Former Net Kenyon Martin added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Nuggets. Rookie Ty Lawson added a season-high 23 points on 9 of 10 shooting. Nene had 16 and nine rebounds, while Aaron Afflalo had 15. Billups, who was in foul trou ble in the first half and didn’t score, hit two free throws, a drive and a 3-pointer in the opening 1:11 to give the Nuggets a 57-51 lead. Nene added two free throw and a big jam and Anthony had an alley-oop, a reverse layup and a drive to cap the 21-6 spurt that put Denver ahead 71-57. New Jersey never got close after that.

is the weather. Perk Heid, a guide with Del’s Triangle 3 Ranch in Clark, said at first, it was almost too cold. He said his hunters tagged out but that it was difficult. “It was terrible,” he said about one early day during the first rifle season, which stretched from Oct. 10 to 14. “That morning, it was cold and windy and tough on the hunters. They weren’t quite dressed appropriately. There were a lot of elk there, but it was hard for the guys to stay still to get a shot.” Bean, meanwhile, said a lack of sustained cold weather has kept animals from moving lower into his ranches. His frustrations festered even more through the past week. A full moon shining through clear skies — “bright enough to read a newspaper,” he said — let the herds graze through the night and hunker down in thick timber during the day when the hunters are on the prowl. Still, his hunters had their moments. The group came across a herd of 300 in the second season and dropped four. He was optimistic about the remaining opportunities. The third season wraps up Friday, and the fourth and final season runs Wednesday to Nov. 15. “We’ve been killing a few, just not with the regularity that was there in the past,” Bean said. “For the fourth season, it should be a little cooler, and we won’t have that full moon, so

hopefully we’ll be seeing a little more movement.” Those still considering getting in on the hunt are running out of options. Some do still exist, however. Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton said fewer tags were made available for the Steamboat Springs region as area herds were being brought down to target numbers. Still, he said leftover tags are available for some area regions, and there are stacks still waiting to be purchased for the Meeker area.

very organized. … She interacts as well with the teachers as she does with the other students.” Swiggart applied online earlier this year. Although she doesn’t know whether she’ll win, it won’t be for lack of effort. In addition to all of her extracurricular activities, Swiggart is
a pretty darn good athlete. Last tennis season, along with No. 1 doubles partner Sara Bearss, Swiggart won a state title. “Kylee is not only a hard worker, but also a very good competitor when it comes to match play,” Steamboat tennis coach John Aragon said. “She’s a really well-rounded person on
and off the court. She’s just got a great personality.” Swiggart said she thought she was selected for her athletic achievements and ability to balance her busy schedule. She said although the state title might stand out the most to other people, it’s not necessarily the thing she is most proud of. “I love sports,” she said. “But sports are more for a personal or team aspect. These clubs are helping other members in the community or other kids in the school.” Swiggart plans to go to college next fall where she expects to study something related to children. Nationally, one male and one female receive the Wendy’s High School Heisman and have $10,000 donated to their schools. That winner will be recognized during ESPN’s broadcast of the college Heisman winner Dec. 12. — To reach Luke Graham, call 871-4229 or e-mail lgraham@steamboatpilot.com

Your numbers are 9, 13, 18, 23, 27, 40, 42 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Teamwork will pay off and give you greater leverage for taking on larger tasks. Love is in the stars and spending more time with someone you care for will enlighten you, averting a problem in the future. ★★★★ TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Don't lose hope. An opportunity you've been waiting for will take a new and exciting direction. You can meet your goals. Negotiate and set your standard high. You'll meet your mark. ★★★ GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Mix work and play and you will make new friends and find common ground with the people you spend most of your time with. Breaking down barriers will help you professionally. A romantic relationship is looking very intense. ★★★ CANCER (June 21-July 22): Keep things to yourself for now. If you share your thoughts before you have things signed, sealed and delivered you may have trouble completing what you set out to do. Talk your way into the inner circle before making assumptions. ★★★ LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Do all you can for a cause you believe in and you will receive rewards for your efforts. Someone from your past still cares about you so, if the feeling is mutual, make contact and try again.
★★★★
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Use charm, diplomacy and your imagination to get through any meeting that is of a sensitive nature. You can win but only if you are compassionate and understanding when dealing with others. With a little finagling you will be able to please almost
everyone. ★★ LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Use your serious outlook and attitude to help you resolve some of the little problems you have faced with friends, peers and relatives. You will find a way to bring people together. A relationship that is important to you should be nurtured. ★★★★★ SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Promises will be broken and tempers hot if you don't have your facts and figures straight right from the beginning. It's time to clear up loose ends and move past some of the deadweight you've been carrying so many years. Start fresh. ★★★ SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Partnerships, personal relationships and getting down to the bottom of things will all take place if you show your determination and willingness to meet someone you care about halfway. Don't let your own insecurities stop you. ★★★ CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You can impress everyone if you are detailed, precise and willing to take action. A past interest will come to mind and entice you to get involved in a similar interest program or business now. Your intuition will help you avoid past mistakes. ★★★ AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): It's all about strategy and making the right move at the right time. A relationship will open up greater financial opportunities and bring about a change in your lifestyle that will enable you the freedom to follow through with some of your longterm goals. ★★★★★ PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don't let your emotions get the better of you or you will make a mistake that will be difficult to reverse. There will be a cost involved if you allow others to make decisions for you. ★★ Birthday Baby: You are clever and outspoken and can charm your way in and out of any situation you face. You are unpredictable, emotional and sensitive. 2009 UNIVERSAL PRESS SYNDICATE
