Your turn to be famous will come soon enough

ll of us deserve our 15 minutes of fame, so it was nice to see this week that four local guys — Luke Brosterhous, Adam Spector, Jerad Iacovetto and Todd Lodwick — got their pictures published in Outside magazine. They were pictured modeling outdoor wear in the style section in the November issue. Come to think of it, Iacovetto already has had his 15 minutes of fame. Didn’t he play a major role in a reality television show a few years back? Does anyone recall “Filthy Rich: Cattle Drive” on E!? Lodwick is a bona fide sports celebrity in Europe thanks to his stature as a two-time world champion in Nordic combined skiing (Oooh la la, c’est mon beau ami Todd! Il fait du ski!). Hey, face time in a national magazine is a great honor and calls for a nice picture frame, no matter how recognizable you are or are not (I don’t sound envious, do I?).

Tom Ross pilot & today

In case you are among the hundreds of Steamboat guys who are bitterly disappointed they weren’t selected for the photo shoot, I know what you’re probably thinking to yourself: “I could beat any of those dudes down Heavenly Daze in a powder dump! Why didn’t they pick me? Do those guys have agents or something?” Don’t worry, Outside will come back to Steamboat sometime in the next eight years and do another “rugged handsome dudes of Steamboat shoot.” And if Outside doesn’t do it, Men’s Journal, or National Geographic Adventure, or maybe even GQ will do it. They can’t help it. Magazines can’t get enough of

these kinds of stories. When I checked out the story and photos about the Four Musketeers of Steamboat on the Outside Web page this week, something about it struck me as familiar. I’m a magazine junkie — it’s always been difficult for me to throw out what to me is a perfectly good book packed with gorgeous photography. So I have rows of plastic magazine containers stacked in dark corners of the house. When I pored through a stack of old copies of Men’s Journal on Friday morning, I hit pay dirt with the August 2006 issue. There on page 84 was a manly fashion layout titled “The Kings of Whistler.” The tease went like this: “When the snow melts in most mountain towns, the resident adventure pros move on. But the local talent in Whistler, British Columbia, wouldn’t dream of spending summer anyplace else.” The article is accompanied

by a photograph of Guillaume, a cinematographer wearing a $700 Timberland jacket; Lon, a DJ and ski patroller wearing a $1,000 leather jacket by Polo by Ralph Lauren; and Sean, an outdoor guide wearing $70 cargo pants by Calvin Klein. None of the Whistler models is any more clean-shaven than I am, but they’re all at least 25 years younger than I am. The rugged local guy fashion layouts are harmless, in my view. The inevitable magazine stories about the top 15 brewpubs in the Rocky Mountains also are fairly benign. However, I let out a howl of displeasure a couple of years ago when one of the leading fly-fishing magazines touted the Steamboat stretch of the Yampa River as one of the very best places in the West to catch a large rainbow trout. What are these editors thinking? Oh, that’s right. Exposing my favorite fishing holes is their job. Nothing scares me quite as

Reining free spirits in the Rockies Local author captures dog sledding experience near Milner in new photo book Margaret Hair

Pilot & Today Staff

Steamboat Springs

For the first couple of weeks on the job, dog sledding guide Dagny McKinley had trouble lifting the 40-pound blocks of meat destined for a kennel filled with more than 100 sled dogs. She had responded to a newspaper ad for tour guides at Grizzle-T Dog & Sled Works, a company that leads multi-hour dogsled tours near Milner and was having trouble bolstering her strength and self-confidence. After she got the hang of it, McKinley said she was amazed at the power of her dogs, a feeling that comes through in her book, “Wild Hearts: Dog Sledding in the Rockies.” The photo-heavy coffee table book chronicles McKinley’s experience working the past two winters at Grizzle-T and outlines the basics of dog sledding.

A writer by trade, McKinley moved to Steamboat Springs from Los Angeles about eight years ago and took the dog sledding job to change her routine. “I wanted to balance out my writing career with something a little more physical, and then I fell in love with the dogs,” she said Friday during an interview at Off the Beaten Path Bookstore. McKinley starting taking photos of Grizzle-T’s dogs on the sly, whenever she had a free minute and a free hand. She waited months for the right cold morning to capture the “Wild Hearts” cover photo, which shows a frosted-over sled dog peering through icy eyelashes. The resulting product started as a memoir gift to the Grizzle-T staff and eventually became a tom ross/staff full-scale photo book. Local author Dagny McKinley’s new book, “Wild Hearts: Dog Sledding in the The Canadian native’s writ- Rockies,” chronicles her adventures leading tours at Grizzle-T Dog & Sled Works near Milner. Electricity customers could see rate hike About $5 per month increase for average use possible beginning in January Zach Fridell

Steamboat Springs

Starting in 2010, all Yampa Valley Electric Association customers could see an increase of as much as 7 percent on monthly bills because of an increase in wholesale prices from Xcel Energy. For residential customers, that comes to an average increase of $5.04 per month. YVEA President and General Manager Larry Covillo said he was notified of the increase from wholesale energy supplier

Xcel Energy on Aug. 24. On Oct. 30, Xcel filed the increased rates with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Covillo said he hopes to negotiate with Xcel to reduce that rate but that so far there has been little communication between the companies. YVEA must file its rate with the regulatory agency by Nov. 20. YVEA buys 95 percent of its energy from Xcel, and the total increase to the company will be $3.3 million per year. Covillo said that when the wholesale rates increased in June 2008, the

company decided to absorb the $1.25 million in losses. This time around, he said, the company “just can’t absorb another $3.3” million. The rate increase to customers only will cover the $3.3 million increase, he said. The increase will apply to all YVEA customers. The average residential customer uses 840 kilowatt-hours per month during the course of a year. Covillo said that in November, a customer who used the average amount of electricity would pay $59.85. That cost fluctuates from month to month,

however, based on fuel costs. Even though the increase from Xcel was filed with federal regulators, Covillo said it’s not yet a done deal. He said YVEA plans to file a delay in the proceedings because it objects to several portions of Xcel’s filing and plans to try to negotiate a lower rate. The YVEA board will decide at the November meeting how to add the additional cost to the bill. The board can choose to add $5 to the consumer charge, a $12.50 surcharge each month, or to the cost per kilowatt-hour.

The difference between real currency and counterfeit bills may be hard to see, but Steamboat Springs police Detective Jerry Stabile said it’s much easier to feel the difference. After a counterfeit $50 bill was passed at a Steamboat Springs convenience store in October, Stabile said it’s important for business owners to know how to spot the difference. “The way most people detect counterfeit bills is from feel,” he said. “It just feels different because it’s paper, and our currency has fabric that’s woven into it.” The $50 bill was detected a day after it was used, and Stabile said that unless businesses are insured against it, the business will be the one to lose the money. “You are holding the bag if you accept it,” he said, or if the police make an arrest, the money may be repaid via restitution. The $50 that was recently passed in town was not especially high quality, Stabile said.

Online For more ways to detect fake currency, visit www.secretservice.gov/ money_detect.shtml

That bill was printed on regular paper and was noticeable from its texture. Stabile said that a known counterfeiter recently was released from jail, and police are on the lookout for any new instances of counterfeit bills, but so far none have been linked to the man. Police reviewed surveillance footage of the recent incident but were unable to identify a suspect. Stabile said that because there are so many counterfeiting methods, there is not one sure way to identify a fake bill. Currency pens, used by cashiers to test the fabric of a bill, are one of the most popular ways to detect fake currency. But it’s not foolproof. Stabile said one counterfeiting method is to take a $5 bill, wash it with caustic chemicals and reprint it as a $50. In that case, the currencytesting pen would not recognize the difference, because the fabric

would be authentic. But there are other signs to look for. The security strip woven into U.S. bills of $5 or higher includes the denomination of the bill, and the larger the denomination of the bill, the closer the strip is to the center of the bill. Stabile said that a few years ago, many high-quality counterfeit bills were passed across Colorado. The investigation in that case involved the Secret Service, and about 10 people were arrested. In most years, he said,

Steamboat will have three or four fake bills passed, along with several fake travelers checks. Police notified the Secret Service about the most recent fake bill and are investigating. Stabile said it’s important for the person accepting the bill to be attentive. “Just trust your instincts,” he said. “The majority (of counterfeit bills) we get notified of, the way they describe it is that it just didn’t feel right as they were counting it.”

When Mark and Katie Rasmussen moved to Steamboat Springs from California a few years ago, they immediately started looking for chances to play music. They took the opportunity to play in the Steamboat Springs Orchestra — Mark on trumpet, Katie on flute — but the town was missing something the increasingly professional orchestra couldn’t provide. At the beginning of October, Mark Rasmussen conducted the first rehearsal of the Yampa Valley Community Band. About a month in, the all-inclusive concert band has about 20 members, Mark Rasmussen said Friday afternoon. The group includes middle- and high-school students, amateur players, people returning to music and several Steamboat Springs Orchestra wind players. “I love playing in the orchestra, but it leaves a lot of people out in the cold. … I’ve never lived in a town that didn’t have a community band, and in this town, being so arts-positive, it seemed like a big hole,” Rasmussen said. The group rehearses from 7 to 9 p.m. every Monday in the music room at Steamboat Springs Middle School. Rehearsals are open to anyone who plays a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument, Rasmussen said. Bonnie Murray, who plays

She hopes to write a second based on a climb

of Mount St. Elias, the secondhighest peak in North America. The author hopes to travel the state and country talking about what she’s learned from her two years dog sledding and the time she spent working on “Wild Hearts.” She’d like some of those talks to focus on the self-confidence she built up working at the kennel. A book talk in Steamboat tentatively is scheduled for mid-December at

Epilogue Book Co., she said. trail work was Jag’s Enterprises, of Greeley, with offices in Steamboat. Deputy City Manager Wendy DuBord said Jag’s has done a variety of projects for the city throughout the past several years. The new construction will link the current southern terminus of the paved portion of the trail at the bridge over Walton Creek next to South Side Station. A soft surface trail exists on the south side of the pedestrian bridge. It runs across an undeveloped commercial lot and then through open space in front of South Side Station convenience store and finally, the U.S. Forest Service headquarters. The trail easement makes a 90-degree turn before it reaches the parking lot of the Steamboat Hotel — formerly Super 8 — and leads west through a lightly used portion of the parking lot at Walton Pond Apartments before reaching the river. The existing trail turns right again and heads downstream, but Robinson said the new extension will make a left turn at that point and roughly parallel the river upstream behind the Bunkhouse Lodge, Majestic Valley townhomes and River Place residential subdivision until it reaches Dougherty Road. It is a private road at that juncture, and the trail dead ends there.

matt stensland/staff

Bob Furman, left, and Randy Sackett, right, of Civil Design Consultants, work Thursday with Don Garner, middle, of Jag’s Enterprises, at the site of an extension of the Yampa River Core Trail.

Parks and Recreation veterans get new job titles Veteran Parks and Recreation supervisors Jeff Nelson and Craig Robinson have seen changes in their job descriptions recently, but they will remain active in familiar roles. Chris Wilson, director of the Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department, said Thursday that Robinson would assume administrative duties for the city’s Brent Romick Rodeo Arena and Howelsen Hill ski area in addition to his administrative duties for trails and open space in the city. Nelson will give up administrative duties for the rodeo and ski venues while retaining the role of project foreman in those areas. He also will act in the foreman’s role on trails and open space projects. Wilson said the change is in keeping

with the goal of the recently adopted Parks and Rec master plan, which envisions how the department will grow and merge some of its five existing divisions. For example, he said, the current ice arena division likely is to be merged into the recreation division. The era of hiring freezes and furloughs adds to the desirability of the current changes, Wilson said. He explained that with a smaller crew, Robinson’s role of foreman on trails and open space had diminished. “I’m excited that we can keep and blend the skills and abilities of two employees and achieve greater efficiency for the public,” Wilson said. — Tom Ross

Commentary

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?

Unhealthy America Nicholas Kristof

The New York Times

The moment of truth for health care is at hand, and the distortion that perhaps gets the most traction is this: We have the greatest health care system in the world. Sure, it has flaws, but it saves lives in ways that other countries can only dream of. Abroad, people sit on waiting lists for months, so why should we squander billions of dollars to mess with a system that is the envy of the Kristof world? As Sen. Richard Shelby, of Alabama, puts it, President Barack Obama’s plans amount to “the first step in destroying the best health care system the world has ever known.” That self-aggrandizing delusion may be the single greatest myth in the health care debate. In fact, America’s health

care system is worse than Slov — er, oops, more on that later. The United States ranks 31st in life expectancy (tied with Kuwait and Chile), according to the latest World Health Organization figures. We rank 37th in infant mortality (partly because of many premature births) and 34th in maternal mortality. A child in the United States is 2 1/2 times as likely to die by age 5 as in Singapore or Sweden, and an American woman is 11 times as likely to die in childbirth as a woman in Ireland. Canadians live longer than Americans do after kidney transplants and after dialysis, and that may be typical of cross-border differences. One review examined 10 studies of how the American and Canadian systems dealt with various medical issues. The United States did better in two, Canada did better in five, and in three they were similar or it was difficult to determine.

Yet another study, cited in a recent report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Urban Institute, looked at how well 19 developed countries succeeded in avoiding “preventable deaths,” like those where a disease could be cured or forestalled. What Shelby called “the best health care system” ranked in last place. The figures are even worse for members of minority groups. An AfricanAmerican in New Orleans has a shorter life expectancy than the average person in Vietnam or Honduras. I regularly receive heartbreaking e-mail messages from readers simultaneously combating the predations of disease and insurers. One correspondent, Linda, told me how she had been diagnosed earlier this year with abdominal and bladder cancer — leading to battles with her insurance company. “I will never forget standing outside See Kristof, page 9

It’s all so terribly sad. To listen to liberals and the White House spin election results, you’d think all was well with the world. President Barack Obama is still personally popular! The evil right-wing extremists lost in New York’s 23rd congressional district and a Democrat (who was arguably more conservative than the Republican nominee) Goldberg won. Virginia always was a red state (no matter what we all said about it turning blue with Obama’s victory), and the election hinged on local issues. Defeated New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was personally unpopular (let’s all forget that the White House tried to turn the

Mallard Fillmore

race into a referendum on Obama’s agenda). In short, the White House spin is: “There’s nothing to see here, folks. All is well.” By now, those interested in such things have already heard the rebuttal to these desperate talking points. And there’s no need to rehearse them again. In fact, what is sad is not the spin war. This happens after every election. The partisans and pundits race for the election results like kids charging the disgorged contents of a piñata, claiming convenient facts like candy and shouting “mine!” It’s always an unseemly process. No, what’s sad is how far Obama’s defenders have had to move the goalposts just to keep up their morale. They might be right that the elections don’t mean all that much for Obama and the Democrats. I very much doubt it, but even having the argument represents an enormous

defeat for self-styled progressives. Almost exactly a year ago, liberals insisted that Obama was going to be FDR 2.0 and that this was the dawn of a new progressive era. Countless magazine articles and newspaper columns were dedicated to the idea we were poised for a “new New Deal.” Filmmaker Spike Lee declared that we will henceforth measure time B.O. (“before Obama”) and A.O. (“after Obama”). Newsweek became so obsessed with Obama as a redeemer-saint-Jedi reincarnation of FDR and Lincoln — and also the sexiest man alive — it’s a wonder the Secret Service didn’t issue a restraining order. Nearly a year later, Newsweek’s Nov. 2 cover story is a “survival guide” for liberals who seem on the verge of selfimmolation given their disappointment See Goldberg, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

An apology to the citizens of Slovenia the chemo treatment room knowing that the medication needed to save my life was only a few feet away, but that because I had private insurance it wasn’t available to me,” Linda wrote. “I read a comment from someone saying that they didn’t want a faceless government bureaucrat deciding if they would or would not get treatment. Well, a faceless bureaucrat from my private insurance made the decision that I wouldn’t get treatment and that I wasn’t worth saving.” It’s true that Americans have shorter waits to see medical specialists than in most countries, though waits in Germany are shorter than in the United States. But citizens of other countries get longer hospital stays and more medication than Americans do because our insurance companies evict people from hospitals as soon as they can stagger out of bed. For example, in the United States, 90 percent of hernia surgery is performed on an out-

patient basis. In Britain, only 40 percent is, according to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute. Likewise, Americans take 10 percent fewer drugs than citizens in other countries — but pay 118 percent more for each pill they take, McKinsey said. Opponents of reform assert that the wretched statistics in the United States are simply a consequence of unhealthy lifestyles and a diverse population with pockets of poverty. It’s true that America suffers more from obesity than other countries. But McKinsey found that overall, the disease burden in Europe is higher than in the United States, probably because Americans smoke less and because the American population is younger. Moreover, there is one American health statistic that is strikingly above average: life expectancy for Americans who have already reached age 65. At that point, they can expect to live longer than the average in industrialized countries.

That’s because Americans older than age 65 actually have universal health care coverage: Medicare. Suddenly, a diverse population with pockets of poverty is no longer such a drawback. That brings me to an apology. In several columns, I’ve noted indignantly that we have worse health statistics than Slovenia. For example, I noted that an American child is twice as likely to die in its first year as a Slovenian child. The tone — worse than Slovenia! — gravely offended Slovenians. They resent having their fine universal health coverage compared with the notoriously dysfunctional American system. As far as I can tell, every Slovenian has written to me. Twice. So, to all you Slovenians, I apologize profusely for the invidious comparison of our health systems. Yet I still don’t see anything wrong with us Americans aspiring for health care every bit as good as yours.

No evidence of ideological realignment with Obama. If Obama is the new FDR, it might be instructive to go back and look at the elections in 1933, one year after Roosevelt was elected. Obviously, the comparison isn’t perfect, but many of the imperfections illuminate why the “Obama revolution” was always phony. The driving political issue that year was the repeal of Prohibition. Indeed, historians often overplay the popularity of FDR’s economic program in 1932 and underplay the importance of his promise to let Americans have a beer. Regardless, the people agreed with the White House on both fronts, and supporters of repeal and the New Deal rallied to the polls. In Virginia, Democrats won a massive across-the-board landslide, outpolling the GOP, 3-1. Meanwhile, the most watched race in the country

was for New York City mayor. It was a complicated three-way contest. Republican Fiorello LaGuardia beat the White House’s preferred candidate, Joseph V. McKee, a veteran of machine politics in New York, and the Tammany Hall Democrat John O’Brien. The key thing to remember is that while the White House’s man lost, the progressives’ man won. LaGuardia was in every way a New Dealer who shared FDR’s agenda. This week, Democrats insist Obama is still popular. Maybe so. But Obamaism is on the ropes. Congress is racing to pass health care reform because Nancy Pelosi and Co. know it is losing popularity, and they fear — rightly — that moderate Democrats will jump ship after reading the tea leaves of the Virginia and New Jersey blowouts. They also now know, thanks to Corzine’s defeat, that Obama’s personal popularity is not transferable.

A true ideological realignment of the sort that people associate with the New Deal requires a massive move in the political center of gravity, with both the middle and the right moving leftward. There is absolutely zero evidence of anything like that at play in Tuesday’s election results. The middle moved rightward, and the right continues to hold its ground. Obama still seems to think that the equivalent issues to Prohibition and the New Deal are health care reform and capand-trade. Every day that looks more and more absurd. The truth is that Obama’s signature issue in 2008 was also repeal — repeal of George W. Bush. He achieved that on Election Day. And now he is left looking for a mandate he never really had. He still may be a successful president. He will surely have some victories. But the “new era” is now over, before it even began.

The owner of a winning $200,000 Powerball ticket sold two weeks ago in Steamboat Springs has yet to come forward to claim his or her prize. Colorado Lottery officials confirmed Friday that no one has turned in the ticket, which was sold at the Safeway grocery story in Steamboat in late October. The ticket matched five of the six Powerball numbers from the Oct. 21 drawing. Those numbers were 6, 16, 34 and 51, and the Powerball number was 4. The winner has until April 19 to claim the $200,000 prize. Other Steamboat lottery players also have fared well in recent weeks. Steamboat resident Robert Weese won $1,000 last week playing the $18,000,000 Money Machine scratch game, and Steamboat resident Terrence Coghlan won $5,000 last week, also playing the $18,000,000 Money

Machine game. Both tickets were sold at the Sinclair gas station on Mount Werner Road. Tickets for the game cost $20, and Colorado Lottery spokeswoman Erika Gonzalez says it’s currently the game with the highest odds of winning. When contacted by phone Friday, Weese said he only occasionally plays lottery games, but he was nonetheless excited about his win. He said he’ll probably spend his winnings on bills. The listed phone number for Coghlan was disconnected.

Soroco to get a shot at playoffs Rams officially in for 8-man football in 2010, 2011 Joel Reichenberger PILOT & TODAY STAFF

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

Come next fall, there will actually be a light at the end of the tunnel for the Soroco High School football team. After suffering through two years of postseason ineligibility while playing 8-man football, the squad will be able to qualify for the playoffs starting next season. “We’re super excited,” Soroco football coach David Bruner said. “We are already started working for next year, and the kids are talking about how this time next year, they still want to be playing.” The Colorado High School Activities Association gives postseason eligibility in twoyear increments. Thanks to a significantly lower school enrollment, the Rams definitely are in for 2010 and 2011. They were left out in 2008 and 2009 because they failed to meet either of the criteria established to join one of the state’s 8-man football divisions. Schools had to have fewer than 125 students or have sustained a winning percentage of less than .200 for the four years leading up to the proposed drop in classification. Steamboat Springs High School do-everything athlete Joe Dover said it was the most fun he’s had on a football field. Considering what the 5-foot10, 185-pound spitfire did in Friday’s 30-21 win against Glenwood Springs, it also may

have been the best he’s ever played on a football field. Dover was everywhere Friday night. He caught a touchdown pass, blocked a field goal, picked off a pass, completed a pass, rushed for 124 yards and made possibly the biggest fourth-down conversion of the season, helping lock up Steamboat’s first Western Slope League championship since 2006.

“Those are the type of games that win you playoff games,” Steamboat coach Aaron Finch said. “It’s pretty amazing when guys like that step up and make every play you need. He was spectacular in every way. He did everything we asked of him. A lot of guys had great games, but there’s no doubt we find ways to get Joe the football.” When Dover’s around the

football, good things usually happen. Dover’s biggest play took place with him lined up as the punter. Steamboat was holding on to a 21-14 lead with 11 minutes, 31 seconds to go in the game. Faced with a fourth-and-5 from his own 24, Dover lined up to punt. As a rugby-style punter, Dover usuSee Football, page 12

By the time Dwyane Wade got rolling, the Miami Heat were already in control. That’s just fine with the reigning NBA scoring champion. Wade scored 22 points, Jermaine O’Neal added 18 and the Heat dealt the Denver, Nuggets their first loss of the

season, 96-88 on Friday night. Mario Chalmers scored 16 points, Quentin Richardson added 13 and Udonis Haslem finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Heat, who are 5-1 for only the third time in their 22 seasons and beat Denver for the first time since Dec. 17, 2004. “As I continue to keep saying, it’s going to take that for us

to be successful,” Wade said of the balanced scoring punch. “I enjoyed it. I really did.” Denver (5-1) got 30 points from Carmelo Anthony, and little from anyone else. Take away Anthony, and the highpowered Nuggets shot only 12 for 35 through the first 36 minutes, getting outscored 14-0 against a 6-minute stretch spanning the second and third quarters.

Reserve Arron Afflalo scored 18 for the Nuggets, who were held more than 27 points below their season average. “I’m not going to give anyone an ’A’ on this one,” said Nuggets coach George Karl, who remained tied with Red Auerbach for eighth on the NBA coaching wins list with 938. “We all have to be disappointed on how we showed up.” Making matters worse for

Denver, Kenyon Martin got hurt again. He left in the second quarter with what the team said was a lower left leg contusion. Karl said Martin likely will get further tests Saturday and could be out “a week or two.” “When one person goes down, that’s why everybody else gets paid to play,” Nuggets guard Anthony Carter said. “Kenyon ain’t the whole team.”

ally has the option to roll out and kick the ball. Coaches told him to just kick the ball and not think about running. But Dover saw an opening in the defense and ran for 22 yards and a first down. Six plays later, Austin Hinder scored from 1 yard out to give Steamboat a 27-14 lead. “I was surprised, but he’s a top-notch athlete,” Glenwood coach Rocky Whitworth said about Dover’s fake punt. “He was able to make a play. It was a huge play. He was able to change momentum and field position.” In what amounted to the Western Slope League’s game of the year, Steamboat and Glenwood Springs — who have combined to win the last four league championships — certainly lived up to the billing. Steamboat went up 14-0 in the first quarter on touchdown passes from Hinder to Jack Spady and Dover. But just when the Sailors looked like they might blow the game open, the reigning Class 3A champions fired right back. Glenwood cut it to 14-7 on a 13-yard Tyler Thulson run early in the second quarter. Steamboat extended its lead to 21-7 on a 3-yard Hinder scamper, before Glenwood again cut the lead to seven, at 21-14, when quarterback Luke Jacob found Trey Fox from 35 yards out on a fourth-down play. With momentum seemingly on Glenwood’s side, the Demons held the Sailors on their next drive. But that’s when Dover took the long snap on fourth down

and made the game-changing fourth-down conversion. “It’s either I get this and we can put the game away right now, or we punt it and still fight for it,” said Dover, who at one point was throwing up in the backfield because of exhaustion. Glenwood wasn’t done, however. The Demons orchestrated an 11-play drive, capping it with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Jacob to Garrett Kobobel to cut the lead to 27-21. After the onside kick failed, Steamboat moved the ball inside the Glenwood 10. Faced with a fourth-and-goal situation from the 6, Steamboat sent out kicker Peter Schuette. Schuette, who had missed an extra point earlier in the night, lined up and split the uprights to give Steamboat an insurmountable 30-21 lead with two

minutes to play. “I wasn’t nervous at all,” Schuette said. “I like it when the crowd is like that and trying to get me to miss it. I knew if I made it, the game was over and we won.” Steamboat, now 10-0 overall and 8-0 in league play, awaits its playoff fate. The Colorado High School Activities Association will decide playoff seeds Sunday. With the season Steamboat has had, Finch said the Sailors deserve the No. 1 overall seed. “Of course I think we do,” he said. “I think we have shown week in and week out that we’ve taken on every opponent. I think we have a tough league. To go undefeated we had to beat last year’s state champ. We’ve made it look easy at times and we’ve won the close games. At 10-0, I think we deserve it.”

CHSAA last tabulated enrollment numbers before the 2008 season. Still, the previous four years of competition in the 11-man football Western Slope League had been a miserable enough experience that Soroco decided to drop down regardless of its playoff opportunities. The squad went winless in the league in 2006 and 2007, winning just one varsity game during that span. As bad as that was, it wasn’t bad enough. A 4-4 record and playoff appearance in 2005 buoyed the Rams’ winning percentage during the four-year period to .207, leaving the program barely too good to get a crack at the 8-man playoffs. The football team has established itself as a force to contend with since dropping down to 8-man. The team went 4-4 in its inaugural campaign last season

and then took an undefeated record and a lead into the final quarter of its last game this fall, only losing late in that contest to also-unblemished Norwood. Fortunately for Soroco’s future football fortunes, the school’s enrollment dropped well below the 125 limit, to 107, and next time it goes 7-0 through the first part of the season, a playoff spot will be almost assured. “We took a hard look at our potential enrollment (before deciding to drop down), and we are right where we thought we’d be,” Athletic Director Andy Johnson said. “In the interest of being able to maintain a program, dropping down was the best thing.” Bruner said it was a program-saving decision. Soroco suited up just 13 players and started four freshmen through sections of its final 11-man season, an 0-7 campaign that featured an average

margin of defeat of 34 points. In 2009, the program had 25 players and won by an average of nearly 24 points. “If we had stayed at 11-man, we would have been suiting up 13 to 15 kids, and it would have been tough,” Bruner said. “It probably did save the program.” The only question that remains is what division Soroco will be assigned to. There are two realistic options. The Western division features some of the class’s top competition, but the schools are concentrated in the southwestern corner of the state and would lead the Rams on road trips as long as nine hours. The Central division, featuring schools including North Park and Vail Christian, could also be an option. CHSAA will announce the division assignments for 2010 and 2011 on Nov. 24.

Avs beat Blackhawks in SO nhl

the associated press

DENVER

Chris Stewart scored in the eighth round of the shootout, helping the NHL-leading Colorado Avalanche remain unbeaten at home with a 4-3 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night. Dustin Byfuglien had a chance to tie but sent his slap shot just wide. The two teams engaged in a nine-round shootout Oct. 10, with the Black hawks winning. Ryan O’Reilly scored twice for Colorado in regulation, while David Jones added a short-handed goal. The Avalanche moved to 6-0 at Pepsi Center this season, matching the franchise record for consecutive home wins to start a season. Byfuglien, Duncan Keith and Andrew Ladd scored for the Blackhawks, who lost for the second straight night. Craig Anderson returned to the net after receiving a rare night off. The Avalanche goalie stopped 29 shots, including a vital save in overtime when he turned back Patrick Sharp’s shot. Anderson had his string of 15 straight starts interrupted Wednesday night when he was spelled by Peter Budaj, who was

back after a bout with swine flu. The Avalanche missed their first two attempts in the shootout, while Patrick Kane scored as he dribbled a puck through Anderson’s legs. Antti Niemi had a chance to preserve the win, only to have Colorado’s final shooter, Marek Svatos, score high on him to force extra rounds. Niemi finished with 19 saves. Chicago had two quality cracks at knocking in the winner in the final minute of regulation, but John Madden’s shot sailed just wide of the net and Tomas Kopecky sent one over the goal. O’Reilly and Jones scored 59 seconds apart in the second period to give the Avalanche a 3-2 lead. Jones had a shorthanded goal as he flew down the left side and flipped the puck past Niemi. It was Jones’ second goal this season with the Avalanche a skater down. Late in the second, Chicago tied the game at 3 when Ladd poked in the puck that was sitting in front of the net. Both teams boast a bench full of youthful energy, with the average age on each roster just a shade under 27 years old. However, Chicago was without one of their young stars as captain Jonathan Toews missed

DENVER

Despite their strong start this season, the Colorado Avalanche are still having trouble filling seats at the Pepsi Center. The crowd for Wednesday’s game against Phoenix set a new record home low at 11,012. Colorado’s average attendance — 14,759 — puts the team in 25th place in the NHL, ahead of only five teams including the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay. Kroenke Sports executive vice president Paul Andrews said he’d usually think the economy was to blame but that the team is offering many low-cost options. since 1979 — The Associated Press

a sixth straight game with a concussion. Kane and Kris Versteeg helped pick up the slack, each assisting on two goals in an entertaining first period. Chicago jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by Byfuglien early in the game, followed by Keith’s shot over Anderson’s shoulder just more than 4 minutes later. The Avalanche rallied late in the first as the rookie O’Reilly backhanded a shot into the net. O’Reilly and fellow rookie Matt Duchene are part of Colorado’s youth movement. Duchene played despite missing a day of practice with a sore shoulder.

Rivals Army, Air Force face off today college football

AIR FORCE ACADEMY

The triple-option offense of Air Force is Army’s biggest challenge, not the higher altitude or the thunderous crowd. That’s the message first-year Army coach Rich Ellerson tried to convey to the Black Knights, who face the Falcons today. Sure, the crowd will be noisy — always is for a Commanderin-Chief’s Trophy contest. And yes, Air Force, at close to 6,700 feet, is quite a bit higher in elevation than West Point, N.Y. But those are simply obstacles out of Army’s control. “None of those are the challenge,” Ellerson said. “The challenge is Air Force’s football

team, and that’s where our focus is. Any of those other things are just a distraction, and we are not going to spend 30 seconds on those things.” Instead, the Black Knights (3-5) spent their bye week revisiting the basics and breaking down film of the Falcons (5-4, 4-2 Mountain West). Not that there’s much to examine. These two teams know each other quite well, meeting for the 44th time. They run a similar style of offense and have a healthy dose of respect for one another. “I’ve never been involved in football games that are more intense than service academy games,” Air Force coach Troy

Calhoun said. “More than anything else, because of the regard and respect you have for each other ... Ultimately, there’s a pretty decent chance that there are guys on our sideline that are going to be paired with guys on their sideline in another area of the world at some point in the future.” Ellerson is looking forward to his first taste of a service academy game as the coach of Army. “It’s the spice to the meal, if you will,” said Ellerson, who took over the team last December. “We have a great deal of respect for this coaching staff and for those players individually and collectively as a program. They have chosen a path similar to our own and we have great respect for that.”

Buffaloes could be hurt after tailback says bye Arnie Stapleton

The Associated Press

BOULDER

16 | Saturday, November 7, 2009

Darrell Scott’s departure from the University of Colorado will probably be felt more on the recruiting trail than on the football field. Scott’s injury-filled career in Boulder ended Tuesday when the sophomore tailback texted his position coach to tell him he had decided to transfer. The No. 1 prep running back in the nation two years ago, Scott plans to join his uncle, former Buffaloes wide receiver Josh Smith, at UCLA next year. His impact on the field during his 1 1/2 seasons in Boulder was mostly limited to kickoff returns, so the Buffs’ special teams will probably miss him more than the offense will. A series of injuries and an inability to quickly adapt to the college game kept Scott from ever living up to the hype in Boulder. His legacy, however, surely will be pointed out by other schools the next time the Buffs try to lure a big-time recruit. It’s also fodder right now for the growing ranks of critics who want coach Dan Hawkins to be the next one to leave town, and fast. Fed-up Buffs fans are planning a protest Saturday when the Buffaloes (2-6, 1-3 Big 12) host Texas A&M (5-3, 2-2). A student launched a Facebook challenge for fans to wear powderblue to the game instead of their usual yellow and black. Powder blue is the color the football team wore from 1981 to 1984, when they went 10-34 overall during one of the worst stretches in school history, one rivaled by the last 3 1/2 seasons during which they are 15-30 with Hawkins. Scott, who packs 215 pounds on his 6-foot-1 frame, signed to much fanfare in 2008, the crown jewel of Hawkins’ recruiting efforts. But he showed up out of shape as a freshman after picking Colorado instead of Texas, Florida State and LSU and was quickly beaten out by Rodney Stewart, a 5-foot-6, 175-pound fellow freshman, who beat him out again this season.

“It’s a little bit of a somber occasion,” Brig. Gen. Patrick Finnegan, the dean of the Academic Board at West Point, told the crowd. He offered his condolences to the Fort Hood victims and their families. Then he led the crowd in a cheer and gave a rousing pep talk. Gov. Bill Ritter ordered that U.S. and Colorado flags at state buildings be flown at half-staff until Tuesday. President Barack Obama issued a similar order for federal buildings earlier Friday.

headline: “Ten Best Kept Secret Mountain Towns to Kick Back In.” Please, God! Let it be Salida or Hotchkiss or Paonia or even Tincup! But don’t let it be Steamboat Springs. After all, we’ve had our 15 minutes of fame. I received a rude shock one Sunday in September when I opened my New York Times Magazine (I save those, too) and there was a travel piece recommending Boulder, Utah, as an adventure travel destination. I thought Boulder, Utah, was one of those last, best-keep secrets that no magazine would ever write about. I was mistaken. I know, Boulder is hard to

miss right there between the bustling metro areas of Torrey and Escalante. Even though Boulder is tucked up against Hell’s Backbone and has an excellent restaurant of the same name that serves local organic, it barely has a general store, let alone a boutique. Why would anyone from New York want to go there? Of course, if an editor from the Times Magazine called today and offered an assignment to photograph the six best-dressed female canyon guides in Escalante, I’d be packing my Nikons into the waterproof case in a New York minute. — To reach Tom Ross, call 871-4205 or e-mail tross@steamboatpilot.com

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO

Carson are on the outskirts of Colorado Springs. On Friday, scores of soldiers and family members gathered on a parking lot at Fort Carson for a pep rally to support the Army football team. It opened with a moment of silence for the Fort Hood victims in Texas but quickly warmed into a boisterous event, with soldiers competing for who could do the most pullups and push-ups. Security did not seem unusually tight. Only one military police officer was in view.
