“Help create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.” That’s the slogan for the American Cancer Society’s 34th annual Great American Smokeout, scheduled for Thursday. Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in this event by smoking less or quitting for the day. Some use the event as a springboard to quit smoking for good. The Great American Smokeout began in 1976 to inspire and encourage smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking for that one day. By doing so, smokers will take an important step toward a healthier life — a step that can lead to reducing cancer risk and creating more birthdays. Researchers say quitting smoking can increase life expec-

tancy. People who stop smoking before age 50 can cut their risk of dying in the following 15 years in half, compared with those who continue to smoke. Smokers who quit also reduce their risk of lung cancer — 10 years after quitting, the lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker. People are most successful in kicking the smoking habit when they have some means of support, such as nicotine replacement products; counseling; smoking cessation telephone hot lines; prescription medicine to lessen cravings; stop-smoking groups; guide books; and encouragement and support from friends and family members.
Stub it out Join Yampa Valley Medical Center for the Great American Smokeout by quitting tobacco or encouraging a smoker to quit, if even for just one day, on Thursday. Stop by YVMC’s Wellness Program office or Community Health Resource Center on Thursday to pick up stop-smoking materials and Quit Kits from the Colorado QuitLine.
Using two or more of these methods to help quit works better than using any one of them alone. Since it typically can take four to six attempts at quitting before a smoker becomes tobacco-free for the long term, it is recommended to try different quitting methods than those that have been tried previously. Locally, Yampa Valley Medical Center’s respiratory care department offers nicotine counseling on an outpatient basis with a physician order. Telephone stop-smoking hotlines are an easy-to-use resource. They provide tobacco-cessation See Monday Medical, page 12

ne indoor plant Steam boat Springs gardeners can count on is the geranium. No matter how much abuse we heap on this plant, it seems to thrive and flower all year round. That’s partly because it’s so sunny here in Steamboat. Geraniums love sunlight. They thrive also because it’s so dry here. This plant prefers dry soil and, in fact, will easily rot if over-watered. You should only water geraniums when the soil is quite dry. Geraniums don’t need a lot of pampering in the form of frequent fertilizing. A teaspoon of slow-release fertilizer in the soil when you pot the geranium should be sufficient for several months, if not longer. And frequent repotting is not needed, either, since gera niums seem happier when their roots are crowded. Only repot when the roots are so crowded that the plant needs frequent watering, such as every day or two. Geraniums manage to survive

It was the 1940s in wartorn Germany, and a teenage Ray Wagner had just crawled through a field of land mines, trying to reach his sergeant, who he saw had been wounded and was sitting upright in a hostile area. When he reached his commanding officer, he found him dead, propped up by his rifle, which was stuck through the bottom of his jaw. “He was a nice man, a friend,” he said. “I remember him from the train over. He had a goodlooking wife and kids. Just to see them do that to him … it made me angry.” He grabbed the sergeant by his canteen belt and was carrying the body back to Allied forces when Germans began shooting at his retreating figure. He tossed the sergeant into a nearby hole created by a mortar shell, but it landed on top of a landmine, which shook his eardrums and the pock-marked world around him. He received one of his three Bronze Star medals for his act that day, but paid for it with a severe loss of hearing and the memories of what he called a “rotten” war staining his mind for decades to come. Wagner returned home from Europe with three Bronze Stars, one Silver Star, three Purple Hearts and a Presidential Citation of Valor, but also a leg full of shrapnel and memories he’d rather forget. Now at age 85 and a Craig resident, Wagner still has strong feelings about World War II and the atrocities he said he faced and committed while overseas.

Clinical depression is caused by brain chemistry changes in the brain that slow down thinking and the ability to problem solve life's difficulties. It can be more painful than a broken leg. In most cases it is very treatable and people do not have to live with this invisible pain. Because depression is often misunderstood as a personal weakness, people are ashamed to get help. As in any disease, depression can get worse if it goes untreated. Learn how to break the stigma about getting treated for depression as well as the physiology of depression and treatment options.

Testing out health care reform Eagle Valley program aims to help physicians, cut medical costs Pam Boyd Vail Daily
EAGLE VALLEY
People in small towns such as Eagle step up and take care of one another when illness strikes. But what if fleshing out that simple idea and carrying it through to medical professionals could actually provide a workable model for health care reform? That’s what the Western Eagle County Ambulance District, Eagle County Public Health and Colorado Rural Health Center are about to find out with a program called Community Paramedics. The program’s goal is straightforward — take a resource that already is available in the community, link it with existing health care services and provide
expanded patient care including treatment delivered directly to patients in their homes. The existing resource is the paramedic corps at Western Eagle County Ambulance District. Paramedics are, by job description, emergency medical providers. But what if they became involved in patient care before an accident happens? “Paramedics have the training, expertise and scope of practice to provide care services such as assessments, blood draws, wound care, diagnostic cardiac monitoring and medical administration,” said Chris Montera, the ambulance district chief. “And they have the proven ability to take health care into the home.” The idea of expanding the role of paramedics in community health care dawned on
Montera during a conference last year while medical professionals were bemoaning an alarming and growing statistic — more and more Americans who live in rural areas are medically under-served. When combined with the growing population of uninsured Americans, the picture looks especially bleak. As the director of an ambulance district, Montera started thinking about how resources he oversees could provide part of a solution. From there, it was only natural for Montera to look to Eagle County Public Health as a partner. Anne Robinson, acting public health director, was hooked by the idea of Community Paramedics and what it could mean for public health’s mission See Health care, page 13

“In cutting the routes, what we’re trying to do is get the biggest bang for the buck,” he said. “Nobody wanted to see any of these cuts, but they had to happen.” Minturn business owners are worried the county’s bang for its buck could equal less bucks for Minturn businesses. Andy Kaufman, owner of the Minturn Saloon, said he’s concerned about how his customers and staff members are going to get home this winter. The Saloon is a popular place for skiers and snowboarders to hang out after completing the Minturn Mile, a backcountry ski run that goes down the backside of Vail Mountain to Minturn.

Chris Bennett has to walk 45 minutes along the white line on Highway 24 to get to and from his bus stop at the Forest Service station in Minturn — the walk is one of his only options now that the ECO bus service to Minturn is minimal. Bennett, 28, works two jobs in Vail. Last winter he could catch a bus back to Minturn around 10:30 p.m., but this winter the latest bus is leaving Vail around 5:30 p.m. “It’s going to suck,” Bennett said. The ECO bus service cuts are affecting workers all across
the valley, but Minturn’s location two miles off the highway makes it difficult to find alternate options. Bennett said a 45-minute walk or hitching rides seem to be his only options. The county pays for ECO with sales tax revenue and bus fares, with sales taxes covering 80 percent of the cost. When revenues severely declined this year, the ECO board of directors had to cut bus service, said Matt Scherr, board member and a Minturn resident. The board is sensitive to how the cuts are affecting the community, but the cuts had to be made, he said. Minturn has the highest costper-rider as an area, which is unfortunate, he said.

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?
The politics of Fort Hood Jonah Goldberg
Tribune Media Services
Let me say up front, I don’t think President Barack Obama is to blame for the Fort Hood shootings, and I don’t think it’s fair to say otherwise. But (you knew there had to be a “but”), that doesn’t mean Obama won’t pay a political price for Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s rampage. At first blush, it seems distasteful to take a political yardstick to the pain suffered at Fort Hood. But Goldberg if we are to consider this incident part of the bloody tapestry of the larger war on terrorism, there’s no way to separate it from politics. After all, the war on terrorism has been driving politics in America for the better part of a decade now. And that might offer insight into why so many are eager to make the massacre
a story about the psychological breakdown of a man who just happened to be a Muslim. If this is just another incident where a deranged man went “postal” at his office, then there’s no reason to secondguess the Obama administration’s fairly relentless effort to dismantle the war on terrorism. That effort stems from what Obama believes to be a sweeping mandate to be Not George Bush. In pursuit of that mandate, the White House already has purged the phrase “war on terror” from its lexicon, preferring “overseas contingency operations.” Obama is hell-bent on closing Guantanamo Bay, is making progress on the White House project to treat terrorists as mere criminals, and has kowtowed to the United Nations as no president has. Meanwhile, his secretary of homeland security, Janet Napolitano, says that Islamic terrorism like we saw
on 9/11 should now be referred to as “man-caused disasters.” But she adds that American right-wingers must be scrutinized as potential terrorists. All of these moves seemed politically palatable for a war-weary country that felt, rightly or wrongly, as if we’d made it through the worst of it. It was time for a makeover of our political house. The problem is that, rather than merely throw on a fresh coat of paint and lay down some new carpeting, Obama is going after load-bearing walls and structural beams. And if the war on terrorism refuses to go away as easily as the phrase we use for it did, the whole edifice of the Obama administration could come crashing down. For instance, it seems likely that Obama already has suffered a rhetorical defeat. Whatever his faults, President Bush got to say one thing that the See Goldberg, page 9
Triumph of a dreamer Nicholas D. Kristof The New York Times
Any time anyone tells you that a dream is impossible, any time you’re discouraged by impossible challenges, just mutter this mantra: Tererai Trent. Of all the people earning university degrees this year, perhaps the most remarkable story belongs to Tererai, a middle-age woman who is one of my heroes. She is celebrating a personal triumph, but she’s also a monument to the aid Kristof organizations and individuals who helped her. When you hear that foreign-aid groups just squander money or build dependency, remember that by all odds Tererai should be an illiterate, battered cattleherd in Zimbabwe and instead — ah, but I’m getting ahead of my story.
Mallard Fillmore
Tererai was born in a village in rural Zimbabwe, probably sometime in 1965, and attended elementary school for less than one year. Her father married her off when she was about 11 to a man who beat her regularly. She seemed destined to be one more squandered African asset. A dozen years passed. Jo Luck, the director of an aid group called Heifer International, passed through the village and told the women there that they should stand up, nurture dreams, change their lives. Inspired, Tererai scribbled down four absurd goals based on accomplishments she had vaguely heard of among famous Africans. She wrote that she wanted to study abroad, and to earn a B.A., a master’s and a doctorate. Tererai began to work for Heifer and several Christian organizations as a community organizer. She used the income to take correspondence courses,
while saving every penny she could. In 1998, she was accepted to Oklahoma State University, but she insisted on taking all five of her children with her rather than leave them with her husband. “I couldn’t abandon my kids,” she recalled. “I knew that they might end up getting married off.” Tererai’s husband eventually agreed that she could take the children to America — as long as he went, too. Heifer helped with the plane tickets, Tererai’s mother sold a cow, and neighbors sold goats to help raise money. With $4,000 in cash wrapped in a stocking and tied around her waist, Tererai set off for Oklahoma. An impossible dream had come true, but it soon looked like a nightmare. Tererai and her family had little money and lived in a ramshackle trailer, shivering and hungry. Her husband refused to See Kristof, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

Particularly among Obama’s core supporters, the notion that violence only begets more violence is as popular as it is untrue. Early reports suggested that Hasan was driven to his murder spree out of frustration with Obama’s refusal to pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan fast enough. If Obama’s base believes that line of argument — which is essentially a “blame Bush” argument — it will only intensify their opposition to escalation in Afghanistan. If Obama goes ahead with escalation anyway, the prospect of “LBJ redux” increases. If the majority of Americans had thought in 2008 that the war on terrorism was a top priority, they wouldn’t have voted for Obama. It only makes sense that if the war on terrorism once again becomes a top priority, they’ll most likely regret their vote.
Tererai a reminder that talent is universal Kristof continued from 8 do any housework — he was a man! — and coped by beating her. “There was very little food,” she said. “The kids would come home from school, and they would be hungry.” Tererai found herself eating from trash cans, and she thought about quitting — but felt that doing so would let down other African women. “I knew that I was getting an opportunity that other women were dying to get,” she recalled. So she struggled on, holding several jobs, taking every class she could, washing and scrubbing, enduring beatings, barely sleeping. At one point the university tried to expel Tererai for falling behind on tuition payments. A university official, Ron Beer, intervened on her behalf and rallied the faculty and community behind her with donations and support.
“I saw that she had enormous talent,” Beer said. His church helped with food, Habitat for Humanity provided housing, and a friend at Walmart carefully put expired fruits and vegetables in boxes beside the Dumpster and tipped her off. Soon afterward, Tererai had her husband deported back to Zimbabwe for beating her, and she earned her B.A. — and started on her M.A. Then her husband returned, now frail and sick with a disease that turned out to be AIDS. Tererai tested negative for HIV, and then — feeling sorry for her husband — she took in her former tormentor and nursed him as he grew sicker and eventually died. Through all this blur of pressures, Tererai excelled at school, pursuing a Ph.D. at Western Michigan University and writing a dissertation on AIDS prevention in Africa even as she began working for
Heifer as a program evaluator. On top of all that, she was remarried, to Mark Trent, a plant pathologist she had met at Oklahoma State. Tererai is a reminder of the adage that talent is universal, while opportunity is not. There are still 75 million children who are not attending primary school around the world. We could educate them all for far less than the cost of the proposed military “surge” in Afghanistan. Each time Tererai accomplished one of those goals that she had written long ago, she checked it off on that old, worn paper. Last month, she ticked off the very last goal, after successfully defending her dissertation. She’ll receive her Ph.D. next month, and so a one-time impoverished cattle-herd from Zimbabwe with less than a year of elementary school education will don academic robes and become Dr. Tererai Trent.

American people always appreciated: After 9/11, he kept us safe from a terrorist attack on the homeland. If Hasan acted as a Jihadist terrorist and not a disgruntled psychiatrist, Obama can’t even make the same claim about his first year in office. More substantively, Obama has had the luxury of exploiting his predecessor’s success. His actions on Guantanamo, his mea culpas for America to the Muslim world, etc., only have been possible in a political environment absent domestic terrorist attacks. As it stands, Hasan may have been a oneoff, an isolated incident. Let’s hope that’s the case, but let’s not delude ourselves that this is likely. Yet, if we see more of this sort of thing, the underpinnings of Obama’s national-
security posture may well disintegrate. His reputation for flexibility notwithstanding, the record shows that he is, in fact, implacably ideological when it comes to his core beliefs. If terrorism drives the country rightward, he may well choose to stand his ground. That’s what he’s done with the domestic crisis. While the country has been screaming for Washington to concentrate on fixing the economy and the unemployment rate, Obama and his party rigidly have focused on their health care schemes and cap-and-trade — which, even if they work, will do nothing to fix joblessness in the near future. Conversely, if the “Hasanity defense” prevails, and the left convinces the country — or even itself — that the shootings were a tragic byproduct of two unnecessary wars, the president still will be in a bind.

People should consult with their doctor before getting the vaccine if they are allergic to chicken eggs, have had a severe reaction to the vaccine in the past, have a moderate to severe illness with a fever or have had Guillain-Barré syndrome. Children younger than 6 months should not receive the vaccine. For more information about flu vaccine safety, visit www.flu. gov.
Older adults Locally, the H1N1 vaccine could be available to all individuals 64 and younger in December. It will be available to everyone once that demand is met, Poirot said. In the meantime, the Centers for Disease Control and Preven tion and health care providers are urging adults 50 and older to get a seasonal flu vaccine as soon as possible to prepare for the upcoming flu season, which typically peaks in February. There was a delay in seasonal flu shipments this fall, but almost all providers should have a good supply by now, Poirot said. People 65 and older are among those prioritized to receive antiviral treatments because of their risk of becoming seriously ill with pneumonia and other complications if infected with flu. Anti-viral treatments help keep the infection from growing and are most effective in the first 48 hours of illness, Poirot said. In addition to the seasonal flu vaccine, the CDC also recommends adults 65 and older receive a pneumococcal vaccine, which significantly lowers a person’s risk of developing pneumonia, meningitis and other infections caused by a certain family of bacteria. Individuals 2 and older who have chronic conditions, as well as smokers and people with asthma, also are advised to get the vaccine.
Although adults age 65 and older are typically more likely to become seriously ill from seasonal flu, tests have indicated that they have developed a preexisting immunity to swine flu because of exposure to similar viruses in the past. This year, people between 6 months and 24 years old are considered high-risk groups for swine flu and will be among the first to receive vaccinations.
A person typically only needs to be vaccinated once, unless they are 65 or older, at which time they should receive another dose of the pneumococcal vaccine (as long as at least five years have passed since the last one), according to CDC recommendations. The vaccine is available during VNA drop-in flu clinics and by appointment. — Tamera Manzanares writes for the Aging Well program and can be reached at tmanzanares@nwcovna. org. The Colorado Quitline, at 1-800-639-QUIT or online at www.co.quitnet.com, offers free counseling and free nicotine patches. Available in English and Spanish, this confidential service connects tobacco users with skilled counselors
who guide and support them through the process of becoming tobacco-free. Yampa Valley Medical Center’s entire campus, including parking lots and grounds, will become 100 percent tobacco-free on Jan. 1, 2010. A task force representing YVMC, the Doak Walker Care Center and Medical Office Building is preparing signage and procedures to notify patients and visitors.

Montera: This program is about patients Health care continued from 6 of preventative health care. “If you step back, this is a very simple concept,” said Robinson. “With everything going on with health care reform, something needs to change. But how?” There is no mdoel for the program, but it has support from primary care physicians in the area as well as local politicians. Both Vail Valley Medical Center and Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs are willing to test the model. Dr. Benji Kitagawa, an emergency room physician at Vail Valley Medical Center, and Dr. Drew Werner, a primary care physician at the Eagle Valley Healthcare Center, have signed on as the program’s medical directors. “I am absolutely, definitely convinced this is something that will work,” Werner said. “The Community Paramedic model is totally designed to work with primary care providers to provide patients with a medical home.” As the nation debates health care reform, Werner said a perfect storm is on the horizon. With universal coverage, mil-
lions of new patients will come into the system at the same time when the corps of primary care doctors is being depleted. “Health care is in so much distress and we are not training people as quickly as we are going to need them,” he said. But with the Community Paramedic model, doctors can use services already available in the community to extend their reach. From checking blood pressures to wound care, Werner said he could think of dozens of ways to use a paramedic. “The paramedics will not be acting outside of their current set of abilities,” Werner said. “We are just using them in a much better way.” The current proposal is for a five-year pilot with the education component beginning this winter. The ambulance district will require community paramedics complete 100 hours of classroom instruction, through Colorado Mountain College. Another 100 hours of clinical time will be chalked up in local doctors’ offices, hospitals and public health clinics. Those requirements will take a few months to complete but

Community Paramedics should be in service by June or July of 2010. In a few years, Montera and Robinson hope to have accumulated enough cost-saving evidence to present the model to insurers. Up until then, they hope to fund their program with grant money. “Whatever your political view on national health care reform is, in my mind, that’s not what this is about. This is about people,” Montera said. “This program is about patients. It’s about linking medical care throughout the community.”

took the lives of 3,000 Allied troops. But his survival there was only the beginning of several tours of duty that took him through Italy, Germany and Russia. He worked as a sniper and diffused land mines, often parachuting into enemy territory to disarm or set explosives. “We did a lot of things we didn’t want to do, but you just don’t have a choice,” he said. As a sniper in North Africa, he said he was told to shoot for the stomach, so the victim would die a slower death, sending a message and scaring other enemies that might stray in their path. He always shot for the head. “Why let them die like that? he asked. “We really did the Germans wrong.” He said the proudest thing he accomplished was rescuing a group of prisoners from
high atop a mountain, most of whom were ailing with gangrene and missing limbs. But they weren’t Allied troops. They were Germans. The only thing that mattered to him was that it was the humane thing to do. “It was the best thing I ever did,” he said. “Why leave them to die like that? It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are. It just matters where the bullet hits you.” He said he knew at least one of those soldiers survived because he heard from him years after he returned home to Craig. There was another moment history tells him he should have been proud of, but to this day, he denounces his own actions. He received a Silver Star for a fateful day in Italy, when he and his unit were fighting Nazi troops across a wide road. He crawled through a tunnel under the road and hit the
German troops with grenades from behind. When he returned to his side, every single one of his men had been killed. While the Silver Star remains on his record, he refuses to acknowledge it. “A lot of these guys shouldn’t have died,” he said. “We had no business being there, and I had no business going to the other side and leaving those guys. There are just some things you know you’re not meant to have.” In September 1945, with the war over and the world at peace, 21-year-old Wagner rode into Craig on a Trailways bus. He said he looked for the people he had left behind years ago when he was deployed to North Africa. “I had friends who were now lawyers and doctors and some who worked at the bank,” he said. “None of them went into the military. And they could have. They all had the chance. That’s what hurt worse.”

hat a week for Sailors football, but what tough times for the University of Colorado Buffs. Here are some notes from high school and college gridirons: ■ The Steamboat Springs High School football team plays Windsor at home this week in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs. The Sailors tentatively are scheduled to play the Wizards at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gardner Field. ■ A lot of things came out of Friday’s game against Berthoud. First, Berthoud’s a pretty darn good football team. They were a couple of plays away from entering the playoffs at 9-1, with a legit shot at a topsix seed. That said, Steamboat was able to find a way to win. The victory really didn’t include the offense, either. It’s a good sign when Steamboat doesn’t have its best offensive day and still can win with a fast defense and good special teams. ■ The opening round of the playoffs is always very telling. Seeds, at that point, are relative unknowns. The opening round really defines which league was the best and gives a clearer picture of which teams could make a run. After the opening round of the playoffs this year, the Western Slope went 3-1, the Tri Valley went 2-1, the Metro went 1-3 and the Southern went 2-3. The top seeds and home teams won every game, with the exception of No. 9 Delta beating No. 8 D’Evelyn, 14-6. ■ The state of college football in Colorado isn’t the best. The two teams most people think of are the University of Colorado and Colorado State University, but it’s the Air Force Academy that has had the most success the past five years. At CSU, the Rams are on their way. Steve Fairchild has proven he’s a good coach and should be given time to right the See Graham, page 18

The Denver Broncos’ Knowshon Moreno, front, runs away from the Washington Redskins’ Albert Haynesworth during their game at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., on Sunday. Denver dropped its third game in a row — this one a 27-17 loss to Washington, which used a fake field goal to score a touchdown in the first half.

LANDOVER, Md.
The Washington Redskins did everything except hold a big neon sign to let the world know that a trick play was in the works. The Denver Broncos still couldn’t stop it. Life was much easier when they were 6-0. Energized by the odd se quence that somehow resulted in a first-half touchdown, the Redskins kept the momentum the rest of the game and beat the Broncos, 27-17, on Sunday, ending Washington’s losing streak at four and extending
Denver’s skid to three. “The way we play as a team these Sunday’s game: days, with these games, Broncos 17 close Redskins 27 you really need momentumbuilders and things like that,” said holder and punter Hunter Smith, who cranked up his rusty throwing arm and launched the 35-yard touchdown pass to Mike Sellers. “I thought it was the right call.” Of course he did. He’s a punter getting to throw a pass. But it was fourth-and-20 at the 35, and the Redskins
already had showed fake by splitting tight end Todd Yoder wide as a receiver in field goal formation. The attempt initially was aborted when coach Jim Zorn had to call a timeout because Washington only had 10 men on the field. Then, even though the Bron cos were on notice, even though there were 20 yards to go, the Redskins still ran the fake. Yoder split out and went in motion. Smith took the snap, rolled right and lobbed the ball deep — and back across the field — to Sellers for the touchdown that tied the score at 14. See Broncos, page 18
The Steamboat Springs High School football team tentatively is scheduled to renew its quest for a state championship at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gardner Field in Steamboat. The squad will play Windsor, which advanced in the postseason with a 33-20 victory against Pueblo County. Just what the Sailors expect to find when they take the field is what Steamboat coach Aaron Finch said he’s still trying to make clear. Finch and a cadre of his assistant coaches watched Windsor’s victory Saturday, then they exchanged tapes with the Wizards staff. After a few viewings — Finch couldn’t help but pop a tape in Saturday night, then he soaked up as much as he could Sunday — he still wasn’t sure what to expect. “At this point, we’re still trying to understand them, and we don’t want to get too hasty about how you will attack the challenges they present,” Finch said. “There are some things they can do really well, and they have some good athletes. At this point, everyone’s a good football team.” Finch said that before Steamboat’s opening round victory against Berthoud, he was able to consult with Moffat County coach Kip Hafey about what to expect from the Spartans, a team the Bulldogs beat to open the season. He has no such window into Windsor, however. Instead, outside of working on what can be picked up from game tapes, Finch said his team will have to focus on what it does best. “Ultimately, you have to execute what you do, but what’s unique about our team this year is, with our senior leadership, there’s a lot of things we can do,” he said. “It’s got to be about playing your game, playing well. We can definitely play better than we did Friday night.”

Calhoun is Colorado’s best college coach Graham continued from 15 ship. Plus, the Mountain West Conference is no joke. As for Colorado, Dan Hawkins will be back whether people like it or not. There’s not enough money to get rid of him, with higher education cuts and the lack of support for the athletic program at the higher levels at the university. Does he deserve a fifth year? Probably not with the way the Buffs have been so up and down. But if he gets off to a bad start next season, he could be gone.

Without knowing too much, expect another tough game for the Sailors — probably the toughest they’ve seen all year. ■ A tip of the cap to Troy Calhoun, of the Air Force Academy. He’s the best college coach in Colorado. When Fisher DeBerry left the program, it seemed like the team might take a step back. They haven’t, and that’s a credit to Calhoun. And it’s amazing what the service academies have been able to do lately. Ken Niumatalolo has Navy at 7-3, Army is on the upswing and former Navy coach Paul Johnson has Georgia Tech rolling. Shouldn’t be a surprise, though. A stunning gamble by Bill Belichick set up a stunning win for Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. After the New England Patriots were stopped short on fourth down deep in their own territory, Manning took advantage by throwing a 1-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds left that rallied the unbeaten Colts to a 35-34 win Sunday night. Manning’s toss to Reggie Wayne completed the Colts’ comeback from a 17-point deficit. A decision by Belichick put them in position for their 18th straight regular-season win.

LaDainian Tomlinson scored twice to continue his climb up the career rushing and scoring lists, and San Diego pulled into a tie atop the AFC West. Tomlinson gained a seasonhigh 96 yards on 24 carries to pass Thurman Thomas and Franco Harris and move into 12th place all-time with 12,145 yards. His two touchdowns gave him 146 and moved him past Marcus Allen and into third place on the all-time list. The Chargers and Broncos, both 6-3, play Sunday in Denver.

Reggie Bush helped the unbeaten New Orleans Saints overcome another bundle of mistakes and get off to the best start in team history. Bush scored twice for the first time in more than a year, and Drew Brees compensated for two interceptions with two touchdown passes in a 28-23 victory against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.
Panthers 28, Falcons 19 CHARLOTTE, N.C.
Jake Delhomme went turnover-free for the third straight
game, finding Steve Smith for two touchdowns. Matt Ryan twice seemed poised to lead Atlanta on the winning drive. First, his kicker let him down. Then his sophomore troubles popped up again.
Vikings 27, Lions 10 MINNEAPOLIS
Brett Favre passed for a season-high 344 yards, 201 to Sidney Rice, and Detroit lost for the 31st time in 33 games. The Lions (1-8) joined the Houston Oilers, from Nov. 21, 1982 through Nov. 4, 1984, as the only NFL teams to lose 31 games in a 33-game stretch, according to STATS.
Titans 41, Bills 17 NASHVILLE, Tenn.
Chris Johnson ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns, and he caught nine passes for 100 more. The Titans (3-6) are on a roll since opening the season 0-6, and they can thank Johnson, the NFL’s leading rusher and the league’s first back to top 1,000 yards this season.

Josh Scobee kicked a 21-yard field goal as time expired after the Jaguars passed up a touchdown in order to drain the clock. With the Jaguars facing second-and-6 from the 10, Maurice Jones-Drew took a handoff up the middle and went to a knee at the 1 to give Jacksonville first and goal with just more than a minute left.
Chiefs 16, Raiders 10 OAKLAND, Calif.
Jamaal Charles scored on a 44-yard run for Kansas City’s first rushing touchdown of the season, and the Chiefs used a late interception to win their seventh straight game in Oakland. The Chiefs (2-7) have managed to win just five of their past 35 games. But three of those wins have come at the Oakland Coliseum, where Kansas City has the longest winning streak by a visiting team.
Cardinals 31, Seahawks 20 GLENDALE, Ariz.
Rookie Beanie Wells had second-half touchdown runs of 10 and 13 yards, and Arizona rallied from an early twotouchdown deficit for its second home win in five tries. Kurt Warner completed 29 of 38 for 340 yards and two touchdown passes as the Cardinals (6-3) stayed two games up on San Francisco in the NFC West.
Packers 17, Cowboys 7 GREEN BAY, Wis.
Charles Woodson helped Green Bay’s defense finally play up to its potential against a big-time opponent, forcing two fumbles and picking off a pass by Tony Romo on the goal line.

Valicenti: Care packages help hundreds of soldiers during holidays Mottlau, who Hibbard said is serving with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and is on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan; and Timothy Mottlau, who she said is an officer with the U.S. Navy and based in Norfolk, Va. McNasby said her son Dan McNasby served in Iraq in 2004 and 2005 as a member of California’s National Guard. All three women acknowledged that when they began the care package project, they didn’t expect it to last this long. “We didn’t think we’d be doing this seven years later,” Valicenti said. But the soldiers still are needed, and so are they. Despite the drop in contributions, Support the Troops is going strong this year. They’ve raised about $500 so far and spent the majority of that Sunday, when the three women rang up about $470 worth of goods piled into six shopping carts. Valicenti said Support the Troops has a total of about $4,500 in its coffers, and the group plans to spend about $2,500 this year — leaving enough for one more holiday season next year. “We need money,” Hibbard said simply. They hope to ship the care
packages Dec. 2 this year, so they arrive in time for the holidays. The trio filled their carts with anything they thought a soldier might need: foot powder, body powder, hand sanitizer, checker and chess boards, hot chocolate packs, jars of peanuts, dried noodles, chocolate — it won’t melt this time of year, Valicenti said — toothbrushes, holiday decorations and more. “I never thought my son would ask me for laundry detergent,” Hibbard joked. She and McNasby said many soldiers in Afghanistan don’t have access to a commissary, which would provide simple hygiene products and day-to-day items. So they try to fill that gap by sending lip balm, cough drops, aspirin, deodorant and more. Valicenti said that although they address items to specific soldiers — and they’re always looking for more local names — the care packages are shared between entire units because the need is so great. “You’d like to think everyone over there is getting care packages, but that’s not the case,” Valicenti said. “What we do covers hundreds.” McNasby said Support the Troops usually sends about 30 boxes for the holidays, sorting goods and packaging them in

Support the Troops organizers Marci Valicenti, Molly Hibbard and Lynne McNasby said there are multiple ways to contribute to care packages that will be sent to troops overseas for the holidays. Options include: ■ Drop off items, donate People can bring monetary donations or nonperishable, lightweight and light-hearted items — including food, hygiene products, holiday decorations, games and more — to Hibbard’s office at Prudential Steamboat Realty in Marketplace Plaza; Valicenti’s office at High Mountain Sotheby’s International Realty, at 708 Lincoln Ave.; or McNasby’s office at MDM Group Associates Inc., in Copper Ridge Business Park near FedEx.

Molly Hibbard, part of the local Support the Troops group, said the lack of commissaries in Afghanistan means troops need hygiene products such as foot powder and body powder. Support the Troops sends holiday care packages not just for individual soldiers, but for entire units, who share the goods with one another.
a mammoth group effort in a warehouse at Copper Ridge Business Park. “You should see the night of shipping,” McNasby said. Hibbard said this year, the group is sending items to the unit of Sgt. 1st Class Richard Lopez, who died three days after a Jan. 2 altercation in downtown Steamboat Springs. Timothy and Michael Wesley Mottlau were with Lopez on Jan. 2. Two Miami brothers are charged in connection with the altercation. A 10-day trial is scheduled for February. The women credited Conroy
Moving & Storage and PostNet for in-kind donations and help with the care package process. They also listed numerous local volunteers who pitch in with Support the Troops. More help, donations and addresses of soldiers are always welcome, Valicenti said — regardless of political views. “Support the Troops is not a statement of whether or not you support the war,” Valicenti said, adding that the group’s effort is simply to help soldiers experience some of the comforts of home. “It’s to show you care.”
■ Sign up a soldier If you would like to add a soldier’s address to the care package list, contact Valicenti at 846-9224 or marci. valicenti@sothebysrealty.com; contact Hibbard at 846-8536, 879-8100 or mollyh2@earthlink.net; or e-mail McNasby at lmcnasby@mdmgroup. net. ■ Online giving Online, visit the Yampa Valley Community Foundation at: http:// yvcf.org, click the “Ways to Give” link and then click the link at the top of the page, where it says “you may give now.” Then, through the “Local Nonprofit Funds” menu, select the “Support the Troops Fund.”

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE PG
A blast of winter brought several inches to a foot of snow to the Denver area and across Colorado’s Front Range on Sunday. Bands of heavy snow that fell late Saturday blanketed parts of the Front Range and Eastern Plains in a very short span of time. As much as a foot fell in the foothills and suburbs west of Denver with amounts ranging from 4 to 8 inches across the rest of the metro area and onto the Eastern Plains. The mountains in southwestern Colorado were expected to get as much as 2 feet of snow. Forecasters said the storm would produce as much as a foot of snow for Denver and most neighborhoods along the Interstate 25 corridor before tapering off Sunday afternoon. Foothills and mountains east of Vail Pass were expect to see as much as 16 inches.

includes a 1 percent cost-ofliving raise and full coverage of health and dental benefits. The agreement reached Friday follows months of stalled negotiations with the Boulder Valley School District. Teachers have carried picket signs at schools and protested at school board meetings. The teachers’ union has sought higher starting pay and rewarding teacher education. School district officials said they still are interested in discussing different forms of compensation. Union leaders signed the tentative agreement, but didn’t recommend how members should vote.
