A GUIDE TO ALPINE TOURING 8
|
S T E A M B OAT S I R .C O M
It seems like just as many people are walking up the mountain as skiing down it these days. You might be wondering why anyone would want to walk up the mountain when there’s a perfectly good chairlift, but for most uphillers, it boils down to one thing: exercise. Alpine Touring, also referred to as uphilling, skinning, and skimo, is a great workout and changes the way you spend time on the snow. It can turn a day skiing at the resort into a totally different experience, one that many find more rewarding. Using your own strength to go up somehow makes skiing down that much sweeter, and the freedom to get uphill before the lifts start spinning or going into the backcountry means having the best conditions all to yourself. What differentiates AT gear from regular alpine ski gear
of your skis to keep you from slipping backward when
is the ability to walk uphill and also to ski down the exact

AT differs from telemark skiing, when the heel is released for both uphill and downhill mode). Alpine Touring boots are like a regular ski boot but lighter, with a “walk” mode for flexion going uphill. Finally, you’ll need skins, a tacky, carpet-like material with adhesive that sticks to the bottom
That might sound complicated, but make no mistake: AT is the fastest growing category in the outdoor sports market. The growth in sales of alpine touring gear soared from about $35 million in 2016/17 to more than $64 million in 2018/19, according to Backcountrymagazine.com.

When it comes to AT equipment in general, there’s been a real shift back to the versatility of a one-thing-does-itall hybrid category, and that’s also true of boots. “We’re seeing boots that are getting way better for hiking but are still boots you can ski in all day in the resort,” Stoller says. This is a more sensible alternative to the ultra-lightweight AT boot that might perform well for ease of going up but did not offer enough support to really enjoy skiing down. goes for bindings, Stoller says, with popular models like the Salomon Shift flying off the shelves. “The idea is to build a binding that functions with the same release as a regular alpine binding in ski mode, with enough travel to act as a shock absorber that moves back and forth as you ski down,” Stoller says. Traditional AT bindings use pins that insert into each side of the toe piece of an AT-specific boot, which are very rigid and don’t release as easily. “You can definitely feel a difference. Pins are much less responsive and harder on your body, especially in unforgiving terrain like bumps.” Shift bindings don’t require an AT compatible boot, so it’s a great option for someone who wants to try AT but will still have a decent binding, whether they decide to go uphill or not. they still ski really well.” GIVE ME SOME SKIN. If you’re new to the AT world, skins are something you’ve probably never had to think about before. Basically, skins vary based on material (synthetic, mohair, or a blend between the two) and how much traction and grip they have. “Synthetic skins are the least expensive, the most durable, and give you the best grip,” Stoller says. “Hybrid skins give you the best grip and are a little bit lighter, so that’s what most people are getting. Ideally, you want some grip, but for people who are mostly climbing up in the ski resort and want more traction, synthetic skins work just fine. If it’s icy, you want all the traction you can get.”

CLEAR AS MUD DESIGNING THE PERFECT MUDROOM When it comes to living in the mountains, the term “mudroom” could not be taken more literally. A mudroom is, in fact, one of the most functional and utilized spaces in a mountain house, a place where you can kick off your shoes, which, more often than not, are actually covered with mud. “It is important here in Steamboat to have an adequate

we are outside all the time, and we have lots of extra toys,” says Lindsey Jamison, Partner and Lead Designer for Rumor Designs, a Steamboat-based interior design firm. It’s also very personal. “A mudroom reads differently depending on how the family functions, but the end goal is always the same,” she says. “It should be a landing space

GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR. For all those times you told your kids, “you don’t live in a barn,” it might be time to change your tune. Barn doors offer the perfect combination of function and style when it comes to mudroom design. “A barn door can slide back easily to provide access, but it still looks nice when it’s closed, and then all the clutter of a mudroom is hidden,” Jamison says. “There are so many new, fun, and interesting styles of barn doors, and it’s a great way to separate the mudroom from the foyer and to hide your mess, especially if you have kids.”
PLAY WITH COLOR. A mountain house might conjure up images of earth tones and natural materials, but a mudroom is a space where you can have a little fun and break away from the rest of your home’s overall design. “A mudroom is a fun spot to be playful and should be considered a separate space from the rest of the house,” Jamison says, and one way to achieve that is with a pop of unexpected color. “Lately, there’s been a trend for using really rich colors for the cabinetry. We’re seeing a lot of teal, navy, and other shades of greens and blues. It should be totally different from the kitchen and bathrooms,” Jamison says.
20
|
S T E A M B OAT S I R .C O M
STORAGE FOR DAYS. The main function of a mudroom is to create optimal ways to store stuff, from everyday items like jackets and shoes to all kinds of gear like helmets, ski boots, and dog leashes. “We had one client who wanted to store her bikes inside, and we have other clients who want a place to store dog food and leashes. It really depends on your specific needs. The first step is to sit down and figure out how you want to use the space, and then to come up with a drawing to determine how to configure it all,” Jamison says. Storage can be achieved in numerous ways, from cabinetry and drawers to shelving, cubbies, benches, and hooks. “It’s really all about function and flow, whether that means allocating designated spaces for each child, for each activity, or even for the family dog. The idea is when it’s time to go out, you’re not running around going crazy looking for stuff,” she says. Everything should have its place.
DON’T HAVE ROOM? MAKE ROOM. Even if you don’t have a large space or the luxury of designing something custom, a mudroom can be achieved with simple pieces like open shelving and storage bins. “It doesn’t have to be a built-in piece or even a chunky piece of furniture. Open shelving and baskets, benches with storage, and double hooks can create a mudroom,” Jamison says. The key is to come up with ways to organize, store, and conceal items that create clutter. Whether it’s a luxury home or a small rental, a mudroom is the place that welcomes you—and your muddy shoes—home.

It’s been an unusual year, to say the least, but that hasn’t stopped these local restaurateurs from putting their best foot—and food—forward by opening their doors and offering new flavors to Steamboat’s burgeoning, ever-changing, always evolving dining scene. From French-inspired fine dining and gourmet burgers to locally sourced organic American fare, these new eateries make it more challenging (and more fun) than ever to answer the question,
“Where should we have dinner tonight?”

YAMPA VALLEY KITCHEN W H AT I T I S : The tagline at Yampa Valley Kitchen is “uncompromised food,” which means they’ll only use local, sustainable and organic products, down to the salts, oils, and spices to create their daily breakfast and lunch menus (open 7:30 am – 3:00 pm). “We are all about using quality ingredients and sustainable products,” says owner Hannah Hopkins. “Our menu changes often because it’s based on availability. Part of our mission statement is, if we can’t get it, we won’t serve it.”
S T Y L E O F F O O D : “We are seasonal, creative, and chef inspired,” but nothing too fussy: “American, quality comfort food, home cooking.”

APRÈS BURGER BISTRO W H AT I T I S : The perfect pitstop if you’ve worked up an appetite on the slopes and need a burger to go with that beer. You’ll find everything here from creative gourmet burgers and elevated bar food to salads and healthier fare like seared ahi, open daily from 5:00 – 9:00 pm. “We try to use as many local ingredients as we can. We want to support other local businesses,” says owner Antonio Jarana.
S T Y L E O F F O O D : Make no mistake, it’s a burger place, but to define the “trendy, upscale bistro” vibe Jarana is going for, the menu offers a few gourmet twists like the ahi tuna burger with wasabi aioli and even a few vegetarianfriendly options, like the brussels sprouts appetizer or burrata salad. It’s really based on the chef ’s creations.” When asked about the name, “I’ve always been attracted to native Colorado wildflowers. The primrose fights through adversity and the toughest of conditions, and there’s real beauty in that.”

True CALLING GETTING TO KNOW
2021 WINTER CARNIVAL ARTIST SARAH JUSCHKA Art somehow found Sarah Juschka, not the other way around. While her career as a successful Steamboat-based painter might have been somewhat accidental, it was not entirely unexpected. “My mom and brother were artists, and my sister is an artist, so I came from a family of creative beings,” says Juschka. Her early interest in art and her natural talent were fostered by teachers from the elementary school she attended in Kenosha, Wisconsin; she was awarded art scholarships and took first place in art contests throughout her education. But a career in art was something her mother had steered her away from, encouraging her to go into a more reliable profession instead. “My mom always told me I didn’t want to be a starving artist,” she says. Even though she was offered scholarships to art schools, Juschka pursued a career in finance. She worked for a mortgage corporation outside Chicago and then became a real estate appraiser, a field she still works in to this day. She convinced her husband to also become a real estate appraiser to help with her expanding business, opening offices in Fort Collins and Scottsdale, Arizona. The

excited to be part of a fine art gallery in Steamboat.”
That’s when creating art managed to make its way back into Juschka’s life, but not because of a desire to change careers. “Through that experience of building homes, I also had to stage them, which meant I had to look for pieces of art that were going to highlight our houses,” she says. “I couldn’t find anything that worked in homes

still running a crazy-busy real estate appraisal business,
To her surprise, the paintings sold. “I guess because I had success in selling my pieces as soon as I painted them, I thought, this has got to be my calling. I knew I had to honor it and continue to pursue it,” she says. When she and her husband moved to Steamboat 10 years ago, she did just that. “I put together a few

“My daughters attended school there at the time, and they both were able to paint on the mural.” Juschka’s approach to painting is very deliberate, especially because she prefers to use large canvases and thick paint the consistency of pudding, applying it with a palette knife. “Every paint stroke is a decision. I love to use a palette knife so I can take really large amounts of paint, mix them, and then apply them onto a piece and continue layering. My paintings have a three-dimensional feel because the texture pops.” She draws her inspiration from the outdoors, which is easy to do in Steamboat, where she says the beauty is unrivaled. “I am inspired by the rich tapestry of art in Steamboat. With so much beauty all around, I wait for my subject to find me. It’s a spiritual process for me. I try to be present and fully open to finding the subject that is calling me at that time,” she says. Ideally, she prefers to paint plein air, setting up an easel on-site to get the best sense of energy, emotion, and light, but will rely on photos once she’s back in the studio. Juschka mostly paints on canvas but will paint on “anything a client wants” from an antique door to the

HOWELSEN HILL’S BARROWS CHAIR GETS LONG-AWAITED UPGRADE. Riding the Poma lift at Howelsen Hill is practically a right of passage for Steamboat Springs’ kids, the swift, steep takeoff causing heart rates to rise in children and their parents alike. Like most things at Howelsen Hill—the oldest ski area in North America and home to the Olympian-producing Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club—change is rare, history is long, and tradition is deeply entrenched.
That’s why the replacement of the decades-old double

supported the efforts of the Winter Sports Club by operating the alpine slide every summer,” Floyd says. The new $3-million chairlift is expected to arrive in the spring, and installation is planned for summer 2021. While SSWSC will have to sacrifice its alpine slide operation this summer, Floyd says it’s worth it in the long run. “Now we have a chair that can keep going at Howelsen for many years to come,” Floyd says. “This is a tremendous gift for our community.” “The future of Howelsen Hill is made so much stronger by our partnership with the SSWSC and Smartwool and these organizations’ shared commitment to the community,” continued Cosby. “The legacy of the ski area will continue, and the new lift will deepen the community’s passion for outdoor recreation for generations to come.” Even with the SSWSC and city contributing $1.5 million apiece for the new lift, anyone wishing to help preserve the 105-yr-old ski area’s rich legacy as well as provide for the future can donate to the Howelsen Hill Endowment Fund (yvcf.org/hhendowment). The new lift will whisk skiers/riders to the top of hill faster, improve capacity by more than 30% and provide a comfortable ride so that you are ready to tackle the fabled slopes of the historic ski area day or night.
While the new lift will bring a new element to the ski area, Floyd notes the infamous Poma will remain, and its near-legendary status for young locals will live on. “I’ve probably carried 1,000 kids up that Poma,” she says. The original Barrows chair was instrumental in running the Steamboat Howler Alpine Slide in the summertime, “a for-profit operation that funds our non-profit,” Floyd says, noting that the SSWSC has relied on that income since the slide was built in 1999 to run its programs every year. “For the last 20 years, the chairlift has

COVERING IT UP
ROOF DESIGN FOR THE SNOW COUNTRY
40
|
S T E A M B OAT S I R .C O M
Roof design often comes as an afterthought to the dream floorplan. The custom kitchen and the master bath are fun and easy to envision. But the task of roof design deserves serious attention —a roof needs to do so much more than simply keep the rain out in the Rocky Mountains.
The best roof design is the one that goes unnoticed because it was designed and installed with care and consequently does its job successfully without any apparent problems. But what does it take to get there in our (difficult) climate? Roofs in the Rocky Mountains have to endure, at minimum, large temperature swings from day to night, precipitation of all shapes and sizes coming from all directions, the weight of accumulating snow, and intense sun. While the roof design may be a subset of the desired design aesthetic, careful thought needs to be given to the wide array of variables impacting the design and performance. To learn more about “performance” as it relates to roof design in our climate, we turned to Erik Lobeck of WorkshopL, a local Steamboat full-service residential design and design-build firm. “When planning out roof design in our area, those variables need to be carefully thought out, such that the final outcome complements the building form, while also providing the best possible performance,” Erik says.

A “flat” roof (or one that appears to be flat but has a subtle pitch sloping to an internal roof plane) can work extremely well in snow country. “This type of roof may not necessarily evoke emotions of a traditional mountain cabin to some,

Meg Morse, Head of School at Steamboat Mountain School (SMS), has seen a lot of history during her 22-year tenure and says the decision to merge was a natural one. “The schools are so closely aligned in their
philosophy and mission; it was a no-brainer,” she says. Never have the advantages of independent schools been more apparent than during the pandemic, when both schools were able to open to in-person learning without sacrificing their academic standards or the deliberate approach to learning that both schools were founded on. “Because we are smaller and independent of state mandates on things like curriculum, textbooks, and testing, we have the ability to be nimble and flexible,” says Donnel. “We really see the advantages of that in a pandemic, when everybody is forced to adapt.” Since Emerald Mountain School (EMS) was founded in 1993, the school’s approach has been to create an environment to inspire critical thinking, problem solving, and an interest in lifelong learning while attaining a solid academic foundation. Donnel summarizes the approach as a “growth mindset” and says there are many advantages to entering independent schools from an early age. “The goal should be to maintain that curiosity and excitement about learning that kids innately have,” she says. “When you get them into a rich environment with a dynamic curriculum, you can maintain high academic standards, but you can also foster essential qualities like intellectual curiosity, how to be good humans, a good classmate, a friend, and a member of the community.”
and public speaking to foster intellectual development and confidence. Parent participation is also an integral part of the school community. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” says Donnel, who came to Steamboat from independent schools in Los Angeles. “Our parents
