ROMANCE HORROR STORIES The Dates From Online Hell by Jenny Cat Not too long ago, my engagement to my ex ended and I was back to being single. He really wanted to live in his parents’ basement and go back to school and possibly date his mom. I was a newly jaded 28 year old and figured I would give into the appeal of finding a special someone online. I signed up for the free websites (plenty of fish, OK Cupid!) and let me just tell you that YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. DISCLAIMER: I was in no way ready for a relationship and may have openly wanted to punch any man I saw but whatever. Date 1: Reconnected with a high school mutual crush who saw me the day I signed on to the one dating site. We went out for coffee where he told me he couldn’t find a job as a librarian and he was living in his mom’s basement. He also just dumped a girl because she was “too fat” for him (I was fat at the time). NEXT! Penis pic count at this time: 0 Date 2: The chubby guy who sweat a lot and seemed to like me but couldn’t look me in the eye and kept sweating. He always sent strange texts about eating feces and watching granny’s strip. Now, he was awkward and drenched in sweat. I drank two beers on his dime and left. He never texted again.

Penis pic count: 0. Other strange texts: 2,000 Date 3: He had long hair like a harlequin romance novel character and giant pecs like Fabio. You’re probably like, why didn’t she go with this one? He dressed like a pirate with big boots and his pants tucked in his boots like he just got off ship. Other than that, he was polite in person but when he said he didn’t listen to music, I knew I couldn’t accept his booty (pirate joke) and I split. I did get a collection of penis pics and a pic of him nude with a hat covering his wedding tackle complete with a flame background (think portrait studio gone kinky). Penis pic count: 5 (from one person) and 1 artistic, sort of nude boudoir pic. BONUS DATE STORY: Went out with a guy who ordered calamari as an appetizer to share and he proceeded to eat the entire bowl and talk about how much pot he smokes at work. He was also much balder in person and wearing a track suit. BONUS NOT FROM ONLINE DATING STORY: While I was out on a date (from online) with a kid who said he wanted to kill me to collect the insurance money (he said he was joking) another guy who I knew vaguely from town zeroed in on me. Thinking I was just removed from a bad date by a third party rescue, this smooth talking dude and I met up with my friend at a club nearby where he proceeded to proposition us to have a three some. I declined. He later admitted to having been in jail for armed robbery. In hindsight, I can see why a three some was appealing to him. The next morning, I deleted all of my dating profiles and decided to take up boxing and motorcycling. I also adopted more cats. Moral of the story? Online dating is a crap shoot with mostly crap and you can never tell who has been in jail unless they tell you. Also, if you’re a girl doing the online dating thing, you’ll have a collection of penis photos. It’s just nature! I think? Good luck out there!

Dating? Take it or leave it, is real love out there? by Alexxis Steele

Valentines’ Day is fast approaching, and single hearts everywhere are hoping that just maybe they will be hit with cupid’s arrow. I suppose most of us are damaged in one way or another. Looking for love sometimes in all the wrong places, and sometimes the thrill of the chase is better than the reality..6 months into my newly single life after the breakup of a 14 year relationship, I found out that the dating scene can be quite challenging.

Soon after my split, my friend Travis hooked me up on a blind double date, with a friend of his from work. Travis, his girlfriend and the blind date showed up at my door..

Steel Notes Magazine | 19

Ok, so the guy seemed fairly cute, with shoulder length brown hair, dressed in a shirt with flames on it, jeans and boots. We got to the club, and sat down to listen to the music, but there was an awkward silence, so Travis starting talking to me. He was funny, and we always had good conversations, so we were chatting up a storm… The guy spoke very few words to me, except for mentioning that he had a daughter, and when I asked him how old she was he said” I don’t know”, then started downing mixed drinks. Eventually we all got up to do some dancing, but as soon as we got back to the table it was silent again. At the end of the night, I wound up driving everyone back to my house since they all were loaded to the hilt, and I was totally sober. They wound up sleeping on my sofa until the morning, so there would be no issues driving home. The next morning I thanked my blind date, and that was that. The next time I talked on the phone with Travis, his friend was there, and asked to talk to me. He went on to say that he was very upset that Travis did all the talking, when we went out to the club that night, and he was supposed to be meeting me. I decided to give him another shot. I knew he liked wrestling, so I Invited him over for a snack, and to watch wrestling on tv. This time he showed up at my house in dirty clothes, unkempt hair under a baseball cap, scruffy face , and it was evident by his stench, that he did not bathe! If you are familiar with Peanuts comic strip gang, this guy would be PigPen. Personal hygiene is an absolute must in my book! I was glad I had a cover over my sofa, so his clothes were filthy. I made us a snack as we watched tv, and not a word was spoken the entire three hours he was sitting on the couch next to me. Since he worked with my friend Travis, I asked him what he did at his job, and how much money he was making. He acted dumbfounded by my inquiries, and did not know the answer to my question, and said “They never told me how much money I make”. The guy did not appear to be very intelligent, and the lack of being able to communicate, which is another deal breaker in my book! After a few hours of watching tv, I was yawning because I was bored to tears, and ready for bed so I ushered him out the door, and did not bother with him again. After this unsuccessful attempt at fix- up blind dating, I decided to take a stab at online dating, since I am not out enough in situations to meet anyone in person, unless it were a fluke. I signed up for several dating sites, and wanted to stick to the ones that were free. This seemed like a monumental task, and I felt like I was in school taking all of the assessment & chemistry tests to find my “perfect” match! I decided to sign up for several sites, planning on sticking to sites that did not charge, unlike Match.com, and E Harmony, that claim they are free, but charge you to look at emails, and such. Unfortunately that did not go so well, since I like the artsy, musician type of guys, with longer than average hair.. Even though I specifically put what I was looking for I would wind up getting contacted by men I would never be interested in a million years!! I decided to search to see if there were any online dating sites geared at musicians, and found a Music Dating Service site. Thinking that this might be more viable to find the kinds of guys that I am drawn to, I put out for a one month trial which turned out to be a bust, since hardly anyone uses the site. Although they claim it’s “free”, it really isn’t. That was a waste of time, since it seemed hardly anyone used the site.. One Day I got contacted by a guy that I thought that was right up my alley from the Ok Cupid site. This guy was a Rocker, a bass player from West Orange, New Jersey, with an 80’s style haircut.. I checked out his profile , and we seemed like a perfect match,, WRONG ANSWER!!! This guy was the most egotistical, obnoxious guy you would really want to meet., He told me that I would never find another guy like him,, Really?? He said that he did not have a girlfriend for 11 months, and that he wanted to be in a relationship, get off the dating website, and was pressuring me to set up a date with him.. I told him that I just got out of a long term relationship, and needed to take a breather, before jumping back on the horse. He went on to say that only fat chicks seem to contact him, and that as long as I wasn’t 300 lbs all would be good! I wondered if he even bothered to look at the pictures I posted on the website, since all of them were

from within a few month’s . After all of his hounding I finally gave in and out of curiosity, I said yes that I would meet him.. The very next day I woke up to a text that said he had changed his mind, and wanted someone that lived within 10 minutes of his house, instead of an hour and a half drive , because he would want to be with that person a lot! I said to him, whatever happened to all of this urgency, and how you are willing to go anywhere to meet someone that you want to be with? I was going to be attending an event in New Jersey, and told him, that if he wanted to he could meet me there, so it would be closer to him. He thought that was a good idea, and told me to call him a few days before, which I did, but no answer, no return call.. I did not bother to send him a message on OK Cupid about it, and within a few days he deactivated his account! Guy #2 from Zoosk, seemed like a good possibility, since he was more local to my area. We were chatting through the website, then I heard nothing for a few weeks. Finally he got back to me, and said he was on vacation for the holidays, so now he could talk to me. The guy claimed he had given me his phone number a long time ago, which I clearly know he had not done. He gave me his number again, so I called, and left a message.. Shortly after that, he called me back. The guy did not sound anything like I would have imagined him to sound like, and sounded like he was drunk. He did not seem to want to talk about much other than car racing, which he does, and seemed to cut down anything I mentioned, so I bowed out gracefully by saying I had to go, and that if I did not get a chance to talk to him, have a nice Christmas.. Strike #2! Guy#3, another one from OK Cupid was a guitar player from Wharton, NJ. He was so happy when I responded back to him, that he would actually get to talk to me.. We were texting back and forth on the dating site, and then he gave me his number, and said that he worked 2nd shift, and that I could only call before 12 noon, or after 11 pm.. That posed a problem since something always seemed to get in the way of me being able to call him in that short window of time. One day I had some free time, and called him but got the machine, so I left a message. I knew he was getting ready to be off for a week for a Christmas vacation break from his job. I did not get a return phone call, but instead two days later ,he sent a text to my cell phone that just said- Hi, this is Rich. I sent him a message back, and said, you know Rich, you can just call me. His response to me was that he was nervous to talk to me on the phone. So I said, well I hope you call me before you have to go back to work on Dec 29th! That did not make sense to me since he gave me his number, and was so Gung Ho on talking to me. STRIKE #3 ! What is wrong with people? In this age of computers, and texting, it has taken away real communication with a live person. Instead they are hiding behind a cell phone or computer and depersonalizing us. It’s like calling a business and getting an automated message instead of a live operator! I had put myself on several dating sites to increase my chances of meeting someone I would actually be interested in. They were Ok Cupid, Zoosk, Meet Me, OyOy, and Plenty Of Fish. Things are not always as they seem on these sites. Ok Cupid has pictures so small you have to click on them to view them, Zoosk, the only one I have paid for, so I could view the messages I received, features your Smartpick, which is the dumbest, since I would never be attracted to anyone they match me up with. The same goes for their “Carousel” , where it is like catalog shopping for your date- with a yes, no or maybe, Problem with that is I had to go through 60 no’s before I found a maybe! OyOy is like an international site, I made friends with two guys from England on there. Meet Me, has to be the worst of the worst! They need to change the spelling to “Meat Me!” I never saw a more pathetic group of people on there. It seems like it is geared towards people wanting a sexual favor rather than a meaningful relationship, with bare chested guys taking selfies, or showing pictures of their package in their underwear, or sending me a message saying- “Excuse me, but I would like to pump you full of daddy’s seed! “ Also on “Meat Me”, they have a wall, and you pick friends, trying to be a Facebook rip-off, but these people are not that talented! The guys complain because nobody wants to talk to them, well no wonder with the garbage coming out of their mouth! Bottom line is there is a lot of bullshit going on all of them, and I hear this from both men and women!

Steel Notes Magazine | 21

Fake pictures, or pictures that are 20 to 30 years old, and outright lies is what you get. I always have people tell me that when they actually meet someone in person they usually do not look anything like their picture! I was getting frustrated by all of this, so I decided that I would focus on Plenty Of Fish, otherwise known as POF. For some reason I hardly ever went on it, so I decided to make it my pet project to see if I could be the one to seek out specifically what I was looking for. I broadened both the age and the distance, and set out to narrow down my search with their criteria. The end result was 11 guys that I had found that fit what I was looking for. I spoke with each one of them by chatting on POF, then some by phone. I wound up meeting two guys, both who I was interested in working with on a musical level, and one that I was more drawn to for dating. In the end it was neither one, since by fate or destiny or whatever you want to call it, I came across one of my Facebook friends I did not talk to in about four years that captured my heart. I liked what he said on POF, so I dropped him a note, we started talking, and he came to my house. I really was not expecting anything, nor was I prepared for what was going to come between me, and this very talented soul that I had that special chemistry with. I kind of have Plenty Of Fish to thank for this special connection we share, so you see you never know what might happen if you open up your heart and mind!

DESTINY’S ANGEL By Noah J Gambino

Now that I’ve found you, I don’t think I’ll ever let go Like a book on a shelf, or an old shoe that never says no Open the door, with your brand new key..... I’ll be watching and waiting ‘til you come to me Your the one for me , someday I will be with you, Yeah you In the moving waters, the tides express, Another evening a tropical caress .... I ‘ll take my bright balloons and fly them very high And once again, it’s you and I... And once again it’s you and I... Over and under there are some things that we’ll never change, like twice for the clock, Or the sound of a sweet summer rain Now that I ‘ve found you I don’t think I’ll ever let go...
