About this Book

S

UNSHINE is the solution to a lot of problems. As I write this, I’m stuck in the middle of Jersey Shore winter. Don’t get me wrong, winter has a lot of good things going for it like snowboarding, nights by the fireplace, and so on. And I’ve come to enjoy the cyclical nature of life at the Shore. Winter is like the downtime after a party. You get to reflect, clean up and enjoy the solitude for a while. Parking is easy, you can make right turns on red, and you don’t have to cut the grass. But after a bit, it starts to get old and I’m ready for the good times to roll around again. I remember a time perhaps 20 years ago, I was walking the Ocean City beach around 26th Street with my soon-to-be bride Stefanie. We both were super enthusiastic about being on the beach in Ocean City and I distinctly remember thinking “I want this to be my beach. I want to be near this all the time.” Not long after we were married and our first decision was where we would begin our new lives. We chose Ocean City, set about making plans and here we are 20 years later. We are truly blessed. There’s something magical about this place for sure. I think it has something to do with the way the land meets the ocean and the energy created by all those waves and the way the sun shines unhindered onto the Earth. My mother-in-law calls it “big sky country” and when the sun hits a certain arc in the middle of March I can feel my craving for sunshine finally begin to wane. Sunshine

solves a lot of problems. As I write this it’s February (we finish this book early in order to have it ready for Memorial Day) and the sun is low, it’s cold and flu season (a wicked one to say the least), and I am in need of that warm Ocean City sand between my toes. I know it’s coming, but I can hardly wait. Sunshine is an elixir, a disinfectant and mood elevator and the sun brings its A game to Ocean City. The sand is soft, fluffy and trash free (the city grooms it every day – thanks for that). The water is clean, the lifeguards are professional, and oh my I just cannot WAIT for summer. Within the pages of this book are listings of the best restaurants, the most unique shops, the coolest activities, the most comfy accommodations and all the amenities you may need while you’re here – from gyms to waverunner rentals, to pirate boats and pampering. This is the most comprehensive guide you’ll ever find covering Ocean City. We could not produce this guide without the support of our advertisers in this book and I thank each and every one of them for their faith in and support of Stef and me. So please, go check them out. Tell them you saw them in this book. So welcome to Ocean City! Or welcome back. Some of you have a lifetime of memories here and some are just beginning to realize what a cool place this is. Whichever you are I assure you there are unexplored nooks and crannies on this island that you never knew existed. Find a few between the pages of this book... enjoy!

OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE It’s sublime to be nine! Ocean City Magazine, our sister publication, is a must have for anyone who loves this island. Beach Perfect Ocean City, NJ!

T

HE time between Easter and Memorial Day can feel as slow as the last bit of honey coming out of the jar. You know the beach weather is coming, and it will be sweet, but it’s taking a long time to get a taste. But when you do... it’s like getting a puppy on your birthday. Pure happiness. At least it is if you’re a beach person... and because you picked up this fine book and are reading about this fine place, you, my friend, must be. You’re in good company. Ocean City, NJ is beach perfect. It hits all the right notes, so to speak. Soft white sand, fresh salt air, tons of entertainment options, and the finest food, shopping, accommodations, and services you can find anywhere. Ocean City is eight miles of well-kept beaches, the two-and-a-half-mile Boardwalk, the Downtown Asbury Avenue shopping district, the

inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. Families from all over the country come to Ocean City to sit on her shore, look at her ocean, feel the warm breeze in their hair and most of all, relax and build memories together. If you’re looking for a first-class vacation, Ocean City has everything – beaches, Boardwalk (okay, we mentioned that), big-city shopping, outstanding dining options, a municipal airport, golf course, recreational fields (Pickleball!), special events, family festivities... we’re talking endless possibilities here. Together with the bustling Community Center (housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center, and Free Public Library), there’s the famed Music Pier (home of the Ocean City Pops and Greater Ocean City Theatre Company performances), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for

a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, we’ve got plenty for you to do. Let’s start at the tip of the Atlantic. Ocean City has miles of soft, clean sand from one end of the island to the other. Guarding these beaches is the Ocean City Beach Patrol, one of the oldest in the country. Follow their instructions and remember to always SWIM NEAR A GUARD and listen for their whistle. Move inland a few feet and you’ll come across the Ocean City Boardwalk, a two-and-a-half-mile stretch lined with shops and restaurants of every kind, a movie theatre, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and a water park. There are also weekly family events like Mummers Night and Family Night. Asbury Avenue and the Downtown Shopping District from 6th to 14th streets is a destination. Our Historic Downtown is a collection

of over 100 shops and cafes. OC retailers put their heart and soul into their businesses and that makes for a top-notch retail experience all year round. Mixed in are made-by-you studios and service providers along a street lined with bright flowers and smiling people. There are also a ton of special events in the Downtown during the year, including Market Days, Funtastic Tuesdays and a lot more. Continuing toward the west is Peck Bay and the Great Egg Harbor Bay – where you’ll find every water sport imaginable, including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. There are great opportunities to see pristine ecosystems up close and personal. Ocean City can make every member of your family happy. From your toddler to your teenager, your grandpop to your uncle, there’s fun waiting for everyone. Happy Vacationing!

There She Blows! A history of whaling off the shore of Ocean City - by Deborah Worchel.

Photos provided by the Ocean City Historical Museum. 24

MAGINE DARK SOOTY SMOKE BILLOWING UP INTO THE BLUE SKY ABOVE THE BEACH. Loud shouts emanate from men working around the blaze, and the scorched scent of burning whale meat mixes with the cold salty air. Are you picturing the beach in Ocean City? You should be, because a long-standing oral tradition about whaling off the beach may just have some truth behind it. Believe it or not, there was a time in the history of Cape May County when the whaling industry flourished. Forget what you may think you know about whaling from Moby Dick or the storied days of 19th Century New England whaling vessels, because whaling in Southern New Jersey looked a little different. In the late 1600s and very early 1700s, a man by the name of John Peck operated in what is now known as Ocean City. According to Bertram Darby, author of “The Ocean City Story,” Peck was a “whaleman” and an associate of “one of the best known early whalemen,” Caleb Carman. Caleb Carman is one of the men named in Maurice Beesley’s 1867 Sketch of the Early History of Cape May, as an original settler in the county who was “known to be a whaler.” Though John Peck does not appear in the list of 21 whalers, Beesley explicitly states there were “no doubt many others.” Local historians believe that the early name “Peck’s Beach” for Ocean City comes from John Peck and his activities on the island. In fact, the first deed conveying a portion of the island is dated 1726 and refers to it as Peck’s Beach. Whaling was a booming industry by this point throughout Cape May County. Early Dutch efforts to establish a whaling settlement proved unsuccessful, but by 1685, an English backed settlement was established in the southern region of the county and other whalers from New England and Long Island

were traveling to Cape May County for its whaling season. As with other early whaling operations up and down the East Coast, our clues regarding John Peck’s activities stem from an early reference to an ownership dispute over a stranded whale. Peck was named as one of the parties in the dispute, which was recorded around 1700 in the court at Burlington. Disputes over ownership of stranded whales were common, as multiple parties wanted to profit from the whale. Additionally, historians speculate that these stranded whales were only “stranded” as the result of shore whalers hunting them. Interestingly, a few years earlier in 1693, the West Jersey Assembly approved a tax of ten percent of the value of oil and bone taken from every whale caught by “non-residents.” While there were some permanent whaling settlers established, especially in Cape May and Town Bank, the whalers coming from New England and Long Island to engage in the December through March whaling season off the South Jersey coastline were not contributing much to the local economy. In his thesis, America’s First Whaling Industry and the Whaler Yeomen of Cape May 16301830, Richard Romm speculates that this tax “may have been America’s first protective tariff.” The tariff applied to anyone not residing in the “Precincts of this Province, or the Province of Pennsylvania,” and was

an effort both to generate revenue from the large local whaling industry and to prevent or deter whalers from Long Island and New England coming seasonally to profit from the industry and taking that profit right back to their home towns. The local oral history tradition of Ocean City claims that John Peck established a tryworks right on Peck’s Beach and that his tryworks (see sidebar) operated under the radar of the more established whaling operations south of Peck’s Beach. Bertram writes that the chief value of beach proper-

ty in the 1700s was “for pasturing cattle and processing whales.” In Cape May County, the whaling industry followed the “shore whaling” style, meaning that small six and seven men boats deployed right from the beach when a whale was spotted off shore. They pursued and harpooned the whale, hoping to tire it out until they could kill it and drag it in behind their small boats. Upon returning to the beach, the job of processing the whale began. It makes sense, therefore, that a tryworks would exist on any beach from which one launched whale boats. If, in fact, John Peck worked as a whaleman from

Peck’s Beach, it is both logical and plausible that he would have run a tryworks operation somewhere on the beach. In his book, “Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America,” Eric Jay Dolan observes that hardly any evidence remains today of the numerous whaling operations that once dotted the coast line. Because the tryworks, storage sheds and even the quarters in which the whale men lived were not substantial structures, they were often torn down once their usefulness had passed. As the whaling industry in Cape May County was already on the decline by the advent of the Revolutionary War, it is no surprise that we are unable to document the existence of the purported tryworks run by John Peck on Peck’s Beach. The court documentation of his legal battle over ownership of a whale, combined with a strong oral history tradition that John Peck ran a tryworks on his beach and his identity as a whaleman offer a compelling argument that at one time in her history, Ocean City was part of the East Coast whaling industry.

Opposite page: whale that came ashore in 1911. Harpoon and whale oil lamp at the OC Historical Museum. Island wilderness. This page: Whale that came ashore in 1891.

What is a Tryworks? A tryworks was used to complete the important task of converting the blubber from the whale into the valuable whale oil which could then be sold for huge sums. Structurally, it was an apparatus designed to hang large iron or copper pots over a fire which would burn for days at a time. The blubber from the whale was cut into small pieces and placed into the pots. As the whale oil began to melt out of the blubber, pieces of skin and meat, which whalers referred to as “cracklins,” would come to the surface. Sometimes these pieces were eaten by the men who were working, but often they were tossed back into the fire under the pots to provide additional fuel. The temperature had to be closely monitored so it would remain hot enough to melt the blubber, but not so hot that the oil would boil over the sides of the pots. In the later years of whaling, tryworks were part of the large whaling vessel itself, but in earlier days, tryworks were constructed in coastal areas, usually right on the beach. This allowed the processing of the whale to begin as soon as the whalers successfully towed it in behind their boats. The earliest descriptions of the island of Ocean City describe portions of it as “well-timbered,” “wooded,” or “having groves of trees,” all of which support the oral tradition that an undocumented tryworks existed on the island very early on in its history. The seclusion and lack of other inhabitants on the island would have been an advantage as well, since the process of “trying out” a whale was messy and malodorous endeavor. Some more populated whaling areas drafted legislation charging “strangers” for the use of local firewood to power their tryworks. Fines were also imposed on anyone found “trying oil” within a certain proximity to the main part of town.

NCLE Bill’s Pancake House has two locations in Ocean City: 21st and Asbury and 40th and West. Both locations have an Aunt Betty’s Ice Cream Shack, too. And 21st Street has just been renovated... how can UB get any better? We don't know either! Cute waitresses at Uncle Bill's have been serving the Jersey Shore’s favorite breakfast for over 50 years. It’s tradition! The food is prepared with quality ingredients and served piping hot. And those waitresses still wear the iconic white uniforms. Uncle Bill’s does more than breakfast. Burgers, salads and wraps are available at both OC locations... and next door to each is Aunt Betty’s Ice Cream for a sweet ending to your meal. 21st Street is open year round with daily breakfast and lunch specials in the off-season, including Thanksgiving Thursdays. 40th Street is open March-October. OMETIMES you know you’ll love a coffee shop as soon as you walk in. With its whimsical decor inside and out, it’s easy to walk into Barefoot Market, but to say this is just a “coffee shop,” isn’t really correct. Barefoot Market has coffee, good coffee – La Colombe – but it has so much more. Owner Jennifer makes some of the freshest breads, scones, cookies, sandwiches, and salads around. These aren’t your average eats either – these are gourmet takes on tradition. That cookie you love? There’s lavender in it! The scones are OC famous and the perfect companion for your cappuccino. Try the Mexican Chocolate or Butterscotch.

ENNIE’S Bread and Italian Market remains one of OC's favorite go-to places. With a wide but focused selection of Italian specialty items and their unmatched bread choices, they continue to pack 'em in all day long. This is a true Italian market similar to what you’d find in Philadelphia or New York. Located on the corner of 12th and Asbury, Bennie’s is filled with a thoughtful array of delicious and authentic flavors The menu is expansive (and delicious) but, this is not a sit-down restaurant (there’s no waitress service, but there are several tables where you can eat on site). Whether you take the eggplant or chicken cutlets home or eat your pizza with prosciutto there, it will likely be some of the best Italian food you’ve tasted. Bennie’s menu includes daily focaccias, stuffed breads, tomato pie, sandwiches, soups, salads, meatballs, olive oils, and more. They cater too, so this Night in Venice order up a tray of eggplant parm, lasagna, and sandwiches. And don’t forget that Bennie’s has a great selection of dolces to finish your meal including cannoli, muffins, cookies, tiramisu, and more. The nautical-themed bar is large yet cozy with live music throughout the year. When you sit down, a smiling bartender will pour your favorite glass of wine or cocktail (served with fresh squeezed juice). In season, make your way to the bay and grab a seat at Crabby Jack’s outdoor deck bar, adjacent to the restaurant. HRISTIAN Raucci and Joe Koch opened this gem in 2003 and their dedication to keeping the menu fresh keeps this place a foodie favorite. From the outside, this unassuming little eatery looks quite humble; it reminds me of a corner deli where everybody knows your name. But once inside you’ll notice the magic begin to unfold. Christian is a trained chef, a graduate of Johnson and Wales University in Providence, RI, and somebody who likes to keep the menu up-to-date. Restaurants come and go in this area and only the good ones stick. So if these guys have been around for 14 years, that’s saying something. And while a good breakfast is good, a CJ’s breakfast is a meal you’ll remember. Christian and Joe are keen on using really fresh ingredients, so if a dish calls for apples, they slice the apples fresh for each order. You won’t find any canned apples in this place. CJ’s Corner Grill is on the corner of New York Avenue and Shore Road in Somers Point. Open Monday through Saturday from 7am to 4pm and Sunday 7am to 3pm.

It's bigger and shinier and those Manco memories that you love are still waiting to be made. The new shop's menu now includes wings, tenders, and fries. But the pizza remains as good as it’s ever been. For over six decades the Manco family has served the thin, crispy pizza pie that makes your mouth water just thinking about it. This is legendary pizza with a tangy, fresh sauce, quality cheese served piping hot with a taste that will stick in your memory like a warm summer breeze. The aroma as you walk down the Boardwalk will make you think it’s time for a slice no matter the time of day. And it’s always entertaining to watch as the pieman shapes and tosses the secret-recipe dough before sliding it into the rotating oven. It’s a show! Even the traditional sequence of ingredients is different – at Manco and Manco it’s cheese THEN sauce. Luckily for all of us, there are still three locations on the Boards; 8th, 9th and 12th streets.

E RECENTLY heard the phrase, "ice cream solves everything." We think it sounds better as "Shriver's Gelato solves everything," Don't you agree? Gelato, ice cream's fabulous Italian cousin, is the perfect answer to all of life's little stumbles, surprises, and successes. Got a little sunburn today? Cool down with a pina colada waffle cone. Aced that exam? Celebrate with a Stracciatella. First time up on the surfboard? That's worth two scoops of the creamy, dreamy frozen concoction that is gelato. Gelato is a yummy treat that was born in Italy. It’s similar to traditional ice cream, but it’s made with whole milk as opposed to cream so it has fewer calories. It's also more dense, creamier, and tastier than traditional ice cream. At Shriver's you can say buon giorno to coffee, cappuccino, or espresso for a bright start to your day, or for a jolt if you need one late at night. In an attempt to completely win over our hearts (and stomachs), they also sell warm crepes to pair with the gelato. Though you'll find vanilla, chocolate, and Strawberry... step out of your comfort zone and try a tiramisu, mango or amaretto. Free samples are encouraged!

If you aren't a dancer, you'll still find yourself hard pressed not to smile... and perhaps even break out into a strut. We warned you. This fun is contagious.

HE Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation makes giving back fun. The foundation hosts several fundraising events through the year – The Chip Miller Surf Fest, the Slide for Amyloid, the Clubs and Cars Classic, and in 2017 added the inaugural Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation HPDE Track Day event. The Surf Fest and the Foundation were created in 2004 in memory of Chip Miller. Chip, who proudly raised his family in Ocean City, was known worldwide for his passion for Corvettes and resilient positive attitude. In 2003, Chip was diagnosed with a rare disease called Amyloidosis. Just a few months after Chip was diagnosed, the world lost an incredibly special person. The foundation needs your help to prevent this from happening to other families. Since its inception 13 years ago, the Surf Fest at 7th Street Surfing Beach has grown to be one of the largest surf events on the East Coast attracting some of the biggest names in surfing: Bethany Hamilton, Brad Gerlach, Rob Machado to name a few. The Clubs and Cars Classic at Stone Harbor Country Club combines a car show with a golf tourney for a day of philanthropy and fun. The Slide for Amyloid at the OC Waterpark is a familyfriendly event featuring private access to the waterpark, dinner, beverages, entertainment, Chinese auction, and a raffle.

Conveniently located 50 yards from the beach and Boardwalk, Osborne’s Inn may be one of the most comfortable places on the island with a relaxed vibe and easy-going feel. Boardwalk shops, restaurants, and amusements begin just one block north at 14th Street. Osborne’s provides guests with beach tags and – this is huge – parking! It’s all about family at Osborne’s. Morning coffee is provided each day. Stay somewhere where they treat you like family. Customer satisfaction is their top priority. Start your day watching the sunrise from the Osborne’s magnificent porch while you sip your morning coffee. Later, read a book while the cool summer breeze caresses your cheeks. As the sun moves across the sky, sit and talk with your friends and fellow guests and then watch the night dwellers appear after the sun goes down. This is what Ocean City is about.
