about this book

I’M GRATEFUL FOR MANY THINGS, INCLUDING OCEAN CITY,

NEW

JERSEY.

Ocean City is a magical place filled with sun, surf, sand and some really cool people. OC days begin filled with promise, careen through the sunsoaked afternoon, and wind down only after the last bit of fun has been plucked from the remains of the day. Ocean City days are the best.

Sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean is sublime. The sun climbs straight out of the First Street lifeguard stand and sets the morning ablaze. There are few things in life better than sitting on a surfboard, watching the sun rise out of the Atlantic, waiting for a set wave to roll in. Well, I mean sitting on your deck with coffee watching the sunrise is also pretty great, or maybe riding your bike on the boards – that’s pretty great too. Combine your sunrise with a run, or a bike ride, or just a stroll with coffee and your course for fun is set.

After your morning activity session, the possibilities are endless; Ocean City does a mean breakfast, but maybe you want to hit the gym first, or pick up some souvenirs. Then, roll into the afternoon hours with a parasail trip, or head to Asbury Avenue for some top-notch shopping and

lunch. Come evening, have dinner around town or grab takeout – OC cuisine is like no other. Keep your night going and head up to the Boards, ride some rides, get some more grub, throw your hands in the air like you just don’t care and ride that Ocean City vibe into your sweet dreams. It’s hard to beat an Ocean City day. And this book in your hands is your guide to discovering all the island has to offer. Welcome to Ocean City is your unequaled source for all the best places to eat, shop, stay, and play in OCNJ. It’s like having a friend who’s a local and who’s willing to share his favorite spots. Ocean City is over 11 square miles of fun, and the key to fun is knowing where to find it. All the best restaurants, the grooviest shops, the most fun activities, the comfiest accommodations and all the amenities you may need while you’re here can be found in the pages of this book.

Check these pages for everything you may need; gyms, surfboard rentals, fudge, ice cream, boss threads, and more. Discover where to get pampered or where to find medical treatment. Need to more adrenaline pumping activities? We can help you find that. Shopping is your bag? We can definitely help you there – shopping is our raison

de vivre. When the shopping is done it’s time for the best part; après-shopping! Or après surfing or whatever. You’ll need food.

We like to eat and will show you the spots we like. This book will help you find a place to lay your head when the day is done – even if that includes buying your own piece of the Ocean City dream.

We can’t produce this big, beautiful, useful book without the support of our advertisers. So please, go check them out. Tell them you saw them in this book. We love being able to produce this book – we truly want to highlight all that is beautiful about Ocean City, and we are grateful for our sponsors and all of you who support them.

So Welcome to Ocean City! Or welcome back. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-timer, I can assure you that Ocean City is ready for you. Try something new this year – within the pages of this book are great ideas – and whatever you do, get your face into some sunshine and say hi to some of the cool businesspeople around town.

Ocean City days are the best days… you better get started. -

welcome to ocean city

THE AIR IN OCEAN CITY SOMEHOW FEELS DIFFERENT.

It’s salty and fresh, clean and welcoming. Almost from the moment you cross the bridge, the air takes you out of your head and into island mode. And what a mode it is. We hope you feel as fancy free as we do once that salt air tickles our skin. Whether you head directly to the beach to gaze over the Atlantic and soak in the sun, mosey over to your home (or home for now), or go to the Boards or Downtown once you arrive, you’re here... and that’s all that matters.

Ocean City is eight miles of clean, wide beaches (some of the finest in the world), the two-and-ahalf-mile Boardwalk, the Downtown Asbury Avenue shopping district, the inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. From the northern tip in the Gardens neighborhood, to the South End and everything in between, there are loads of nooks and crannies to explore while you’re on island time.

Cruise down Haven Avenue’s bike path, hang ten in a surf lesson, or set sail from the yacht club... an Ocean City vacation is filled with outdoor adventure

(as much or as little of it as you’d like). No matter where you are in OC, there’s always something cool to see or do nearby... beaches, Boardwalk, big-city shopping, delish dining, a municipal airport, golf course, recreational fields, special events, family festivities, we’re talking endless possibilities here. Together with the expansive Community Center – housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center (with an indoor salt water pool) and Free Public Library, there’s the pink Music Pier (home of the Ocean City Pops and Greater Ocean City Theatre Company performances), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, you’ll never be bored.

Speaking of boards, running from St. James Place to 23rd Street is the Ocean City Boardwalk, a two-and-a-half-mile stretch lined with shops and restaurants of every kind, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and a water park. Take a trip up to the boards at night and the party continues... the Boardwalk has entertainment nightly, shops and restaurants are open late and there’s Mummers

Nights weekly in summer.

Asbury Avenue and the Downtown Shopping District from 6th to 14th streets is a destination. The Historic Downtown has over 100 shops and cafes, plus there are awesome finds on the neighboring side streets. Head Downtown on a Tuesday or Thursday from 10am-1pm for Market Days and Funtastic Tuesdays. And on Wednesdays, head to the Farmers Market on the Tabernacle grounds. Continuing toward the west is the Great Egg Harbor Bay where you’ll find every water sport imaginable including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. There are great opportunities to see pristine ecosystems up close and personal.

If stepping onto the sand for a chill beach day is your go to, remember to swim near a lifeguard. The OCBP is an award-winning organization designed to keep you safe. Take advantage.

Sit back, relax, let this book show you the adventures that await, and the sweet restaurants and shops just waiting to serve you. With a smile, naturally.

OC trivia OC trivia OC trivia OC trivia

1

Ocean City was originally named Peck’s Beach after John Peck, a local whaler who made the island home for his family in 1700.

2Ocean City was founded in 1879 by four Methodist ministers.

3

There are two Ferris wheels in the skyline and both are called the Giant Wheel. One is at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and the other at Playland’s Castaway Cove.

4Ocean City is a dry town. There is no public drinking anywhere on the island.

5Famous friends who’ve lived in OCNJ include Grace Kelly, Kurt Loder, William Hughes, Steven Dunn, Gay Talese, Walter Trout, Ed Rendell, Anne Heche and David Aikers.

6The inventor of bubble gum, Walter Diemer, had a home in OCNJ.

7The Diesel family, inventors of the diesel engine and fuel, also had a home in OCNJ. That home still stands as the Bayside Center in the north end of the island.

8Ocean City is home to Corson’s Inlet State Park at its south end.

24

9

Ocean City has four bridges across the island. The first to the mainland opened in 1883.

10

OC was once home to the famous “Show us your shoes” Miss New Jersey parade.

11

12

OC’s mascot is Martin Z. Mollusk.

The Ocean City Beach Patrol is celebrating 125 years in 2023.

13

OC is home to one of only three original Life Saving Stations still standing in the state of New Jersey. US Life Saving Station #30 sits at 4th and Atlantic and is a living history museum.

14

The Ocean City Boardwalk is two and a half miles long, from St. James Place to 23rd Street.

15

OCNJ is a barrier island; it’s sits between the Great Egg Harbor Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

16

17

There are eight miles of beaches on the island.

OC is in Cape May County; the southernmost county in New Jersey.

18

The Sindia ran aground on December 15, 1901; making it OCNJ’s most famous shipwreck.

19The island is just over 11.5 square miles.

20Beach tags were introduced to the island in 1976. The preseason price was $3.

21

The 2022 design featured a drone shot of the famed Music Pier.

22

Architect Vivian Smith designed both the Music Pier and the Flanders Hotel.

23

Following the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941, the first structure in the country built especially for aircraft spotters was erected atop the Music Pier.

Volunteers to keep watch 24 hours a day included teenage boys from Ocean City High School and retired residents.

24

The first hotel in OCNJ was erected in 1880 – it was called The Brighton.

25

The first issue of the Ocean City Sentinel was published in 1880. It is still published today.

25

THE A TO Z OF OCNJ

We love lists... and we love Ocean City. What’s your OC A-Z?

AMUSEMENTS There are so many fun things to do in OCNJ, including two amusement parks; Playland’s Castaway Cove and Wonderland Pier.

BIKING OC is entirely bikeable from end to end; with the Haven Avenue Bike Path. Visit www.bikeocnj.com for more information.

CASTING A LINE Fishing is part of island life; grab a rod and reel, head to a bait and tackle shop and start reelin’ em in!

DONUT TOUR Take a donut tour of Ocean City… choose four to five spots to visit with your friends, and bike or walk to each one as you sample those sweet little pillows of dough.

ENTERTAINMENT The only way you’ll be bored in OC is if you want to be. From Mummers Nights on the

Boardwalk to Market Days Downtown; there is weekly family-friendly free entertainment to be enjoyed.

FULL MOON Summer brings three full moons – the Buck, Sturgeon, and Blue Moon on July 3, August 1, and August 30. Get your gang, and head to your favorite OC beach to watch them rise over the ocean.

GALE FORCE Is speed more your speed? Take a ride through the sky on Gale Force, that big blue coaster at Castaway Cove you can see rising above OC’s skyline.

HYDRANGEA Did you know this is the official flower of OC? With colors ranging from the deepest blues to the brightest pinks and deep reds, hydrangeas can be seen on properties all over the island.

INCREDIBLE SUNSETS Ocean City sunsets can send fiery oranges, reds, and purples streaking across the sky. Most streets along the bayside of the island give you a perfect spot to watch that giant fireball descend.

JUMPING FOR JOY One of our favorite ways to bring fun to a beach photo shoot is to send everyone jumping for joy. See if you can get your kids, cousins, brothers, you get the idea, to jump as high as they can while you snap away. Bonus points if you can catch everyone up in the air at once.

KITES Mary Poppins had the right idea. Flying a kite is chill way to relax and spend time with your kids. Grab one at shops around town, and send it soaring as you soak in the rays.

LIFEGUARDS The Ocean City Beach Patrol is celebrating its 125th Anniversary in 2023. Swim near a guard!

MUSIC PIER The famed pier is home to the OC Pops orchestra and many Ocean City Theatre Company performances throughout the year.

NIGHT IN VENICE This is one of the largest boat parades in the country, and it happens on July 29 this year in OCNJ’s back bays and lagoons. Be a participant or a spectator – either way, it’s basically an island wide party.

OYSTERS Yes, Virginia, there is an oyster farm right near OC. Since 2019, G.E.I. Oyster Farm has been cultivating oysters in the Great Egg Harbor Bay between OC and Somers Point. They are available to purchase seasonally.

PARADES OC is home to the famous Doo Dah Parade in April where hundreds of basset hounds gather and strut their stuff down Asbury and the Boardwalk. There’s also several Fourth of July Parades, the Baby Parade, the Halloween Parade, and the Christmas Parade.

QUESTION (POP THE) Found your soul mate? There are so many picturesque spots on the island to pop the big question. Hire a photographer to capture the moment... And if you’re lucky enough to marry in OC, there are so many fabulous venues and vendors to work with so your big day is just as amazing as you are.

RUNNING Hey runners… you know who you are… OC has loads of ways to get your race on through the year. There are a host of 5ks, fun runs, a tri/du,

and a half marathon on the calendar.

SURFING Is this the year you learn to surf? Perhaps even hang ten (curling all ten toes over the front of the board)? There are lessons available if you’d like – or grab a board from one of our local surf shops and hit the big blue sea with friends. There are designated surfing beaches throughout the island – see our beach guide for spots.

THE BOARDWALK This iconic two and half mile stretch of wooden planks that runs parallel to the ocean has been a siren call to visitors for over a hundred years. Wehter you’re there for the food, fresh air, shopping, fun, or for a workout; this attraction is a must do.

UNIQUE STREET There’s a special little street tucked away near the bay in OC nicknamed “Dollhouse Row”

for the teeny (yet fabulous) cottages that line it. Its real name is Wovern Place… check it out on your next bike ride.

VINTAGE OC The OC you know, and love today is built upon its history. There are several historical markers around town (ride around and seek them out), plus two museums open to the public… the Ocean City Historical Museum and the US Life Saving Station #30. Get to know what came before you.

WALKING THE DOWNTOWN

The stretch of Asbury Avenue from 6th to 14th streets and back is a full mile filled with fab retail, restaurants, and lots more small businesses. Hit the avenue with your family and friends. You can easily spend and entire day meandering around, seeking out your next favorite shop and restaurant.

XOXO There’s no gossip girl here, but OC is a perfect place to send a postcard from or use as the backdrop for your next Insta post. Xoxo – us.

YELLOW GOLDENROD In fall, the dunes burst into color, mainly thanks to the goldenrod that turns bright yellow. Butterflies are attracted to the plants and in September, you’ll see many monarchs around them fluttering around the dunes as they stop in OC during their migration to Mexico.

ZEN If it’s peace you seek, you’ve come to the right place. From stretches of sand to endless waves, the OC has spots to seek solitude and everything zen.

THEN AND NOW

LAST summer, Asbury Kitchen came onto the scene as one of the best spots to dine for breakfast and lunch with its creative, healthy menu from bennys to burgers. This downtown eatery with its bold orange outdoor tables and chairs makes for a cool spot to gather, be it with friends or fam. It’s the second restaurant by Mira and Angel Teofanov, who also have a spot inside the Promenade Food Court on the Boardwalk.

Asbury Kitchen serves breakfast all day and an extensive lunch menu. If you can’t decide between the smashed avocado benny (smashed avocado, parmesan, tomato, homemade hollandaise, and everything spice) or the Mr. Crab omelette – with spinach, provolone, and crab meat, we suggest you get both, and enjoy while people watching the passersby. For breakfast, Asbury also has homemade creamed chipped beef, a ton of toasts,

French toasts, tacos, burritos, and loads of pancake options – something we didn’t think we needed, but now are pretty sure we can’t summer without. There’s banana walnut, fresh berries and ricotta, chocolate chip, and Nutella, among others(!). There are crepes, too (we loved the caramel and banana) and Belgian waffles.

At Asbury Kitchen, their goal is to create a variety of healthy options for their customers... for example, the home fries can

be substituted for sautéed spinach or fresh tomatoes. There’s also a new egg white breakfast sandwich and they are adding a variety of new vegetarian/vegan options. Salads, soups, burgers, savory crepes, hot and cold sandwiches, grilled cheese, wraps, chicken sandwiches, and other classics like the fried flounder (yes please) and the French dip are on the menu for lunch. There’s inside and outside seating and an ever expanding, gluten-free menu.

On the menu, there’s breakfast sandwiches and sides (hello hash browns and French toast sticks), fresh fruit smoothies, cold hoagies, steak sandwiches, salads, burgers, paninis, wraps, specialty hot subs, and more. Seriously, you can spend an entire summer trying all the different options Blitz’s offers... Challenge!

Like things spicy? Try the Meena Geena.

It’s a buffalo chicken cheesesteak, with pepper jack cheese and hot peppers. Or perhaps the Blitzy Burger is more your speed. It’s a burger topped with Taylor Pork Roll, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a fried egg.

Blitz’s nearly broke the internet a few years ago with the debut of its pickle sandwich, a hoagie made with an entire pickle instead of bread. They also have lettuce wraps, traditional wraps, and

gluten free options. Blitz’s sells a variety of local products like Hank Sauce, Polish Water Ice, and Shriver’s salt water taffy. They have newspapers, freshly ground and brewed OC Coffee, fresh produce, and offer Dietz and Watson lunch meats. You can order online, too. Next time you’re having friends over, for a simple game night or a huge Night in Venice bash, call up Blitz’s and have them cater. That’s a win-win, OC style.

Johnny B Goode serves up the freshest,

LARGE VARIETY OF FOOD

TORTELLINI Pavarotti, Penne My Way, Osso Bucco, Veal Bruschetta... are just a few of the gourmet entrees on the menu at the one and only, original Mama Mia’s. And yes, the tortellini was prepared for the famous tenor at his request. Chef Joe Massaglia opened his ristorante in Seaville in 1988, after a successful career at renowned regional restaurants (when he prepared the Penne My Way for Frank Sinatra). If you’re lucky enough to sit with Joe for a chat, you’ll realize he’s

the real deal. Joe’s from Italy and began his culinary journey over 50 years ago at a fivestar hotel in his home country. Mama Mia’s offers fine dining with recipes they’ve used for over 30 years, starting with Joe’s mom... Mama Bertina. That’s her picture you see on the wall, teaching the kids how to make pasta. Sit down in the warm dining room with a glass of wine... you’ll be glad you did even before you begin eating. The vibe is friendly, warm, and happy.

Mama Mia’s also serves a large variety

of gourmet pizzas, flatbreads, calzones, stromboli, sandwiches (hot and cold), wraps, salads, burgers, fries, pastas (try the baked ziti bolognese), and other fine Italian fare like chicken marsala, eggplant parmigiana, and calamari puttanesca. Hungry yet? Mama Mia’s delivers anywhere on the island. Favoloso! Chef Joe’s philosophy that good, genuine food priced fairly with friendly service always creates a pleasurable dining experience has made Mama Mia’s a favorite since 1988.

SINCE 1956, Manco has been serving some of the most delicious pizza on the Boards. For over six decades, they’ve served the thin, crispy pizza pie that makes your mouth water just thinking about it. This is legendary pizza with a tangy, fresh sauce, and quality cheese served piping hot with a taste that will stick in your memory like a warm summer breeze. The aroma as

you walk down the Boardwalk will make you think it’s time for a slice any time of day.

Their flagship store at 9th and the Boardwalk is big and shiny and those Manco memories you love are waiting to be made inside. In addition to pizza, they also serve wings, tenders and fries, and zeppole for dessert. In 2022, the Manco family expanded their pizza empire

to Citizens Bank Park. Grab a slice during your next concert or Phillies game for a home run snack.

Of course, the pizza remains as good as it’s ever been. It’s always entertaining to watch as the pieman shapes and tosses the secret-recipe dough before sliding it into the rotating oven. Even the traditional sequence of ingredients is different –at Manco it’s cheese then sauce.

DID you know the Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum is located inside a historic 92,000 sq. ft. wooden World War II naval hangar? Hangar #1, home to the aviation museum, was assembled by the US Navy in 1942 from a kit delivered via railroad. NASW is a former naval dive-bombing training site, where 42 naval aviators perished.

Listed on the national and state registers of historic places, Hangar #1 has over 25 historic aircraft and interactive exhibits. You can even

sit in the cockpit of an actual aircraft and climb a real air traffic control tower. Ignite your imagination along with your knowledge of Cape May County history.

Get your Top Gun on with the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and explore the TBM Avenger, the same type flown by President George Bush Sr. The collection also includes the “The Ace Maker,” an F6F Hellcat, two Vietnam-era “Huey” helicopters, jeeps, flight simulators, US Coast Guard Sikorsky Seaguard, and much more.

The mission of the museum is to memorialize the 42 aviators, restore Hangar #1, and educate on the county’s history during World War II. Your visit supports this mission for the 501c3 nonprofit, that also offers educational programming, and other events. The museum even hosts private events, including weddings. THERE’S something about the salt air that gets your creative juices flowing. Lucky for all of us, the Arts Center is a perfect outlet for channeling this energy into something beautiful. Be it a painting, composition, sculpture, or dance routine.

The Center offers more than 40 visual and performing arts group classes (with individual instruction) for

all ages year round including pottery, painting, dance, drawing, and more. There are more than 50 children’s art camps from mid-June to Labor Day including dance, pottery, painting, and crafts. The Boardwalk Art Show, attracting hundreds of exhibitors, is the first weekend in August. Their mission is “to engage the individuals and communities of Southern New Jersey in the kind of participation in

the visual and performing arts that leads to individual and collective fulfillment.”

The Arts Center is on the second floor of the Community Center at 17th and Simpson. There are three large studios, a music room, dance room, pottery studio, a gallery, and a gift shop. Gallery exhibits change monthly and feature two- and threedimensional art.

LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM

SUMMER HOURS 10AM-4PM

PRIVATE TOURS AVAILABLE

STANDING at the corner of 4th and Atlantic is US Life Saving Station 30, one of only three original life saving stations still standing in New Jersey. In 1886, the building stood next to the sandy shore and ocean. Surfmen protecting sailors and any others from the ravaging waves lived in the station while off duty from their demanding job. Back then there was an average of four shipwrecks a month. The job of surfmen was so demanding that the motto of the Ocean

City station was “You have to go out; You don’t have to come back; So others may live.”

Today, the Life Saving Station stands as a living history museum. Visitors can walk through the building as the surfmen did some 133 years ago. The kitchen, dining room, and boat house are all filled with period pieces that can be picked up and tried out. Play croquet on the lawn, complete a report at the Keeper’s desk, or sit in the surfboat. History is ready to come alive at US Life Saving Station 30.

IF YOU pass Scarborough Inn on a warm evening in summer, chances are good you’ll catch laughter and conversation coming from the large wraparound front porch with the big rocking chairs. This is what Sne Avichal visualized when he began his dream job as innkeeper in 2020. For Sne, a registered architect by trade, being innkeeper is the opportunity to create a comfortable experience for his guests year round. Sne grew up in nearby Ventnor, and brings his relaxed conversational hosting

style to Ocean City, inviting neighbors and guests to connect with him and with the Inn’s storied past. From its iconic fish-scale shingles, to Benny Goodman playing on the Bluetooth gramophone, Scarborough Inn brings a nostalgic, cozy vibe for the ultimate escape.

Scarborough Inn is Ocean City’s oldest hotel, built in 1895. The distinct Victorian building is a registered historical landmark and is accented with cut flowers and gardens (a source of pride for Sne). With detailed touches like surprising

guests with rosemary lemonade on the porch, and using wax seals for its stationery, the Scarborough Inn connects the community to its past and present.

Plan a getaway when it works for you... guests are welcome all year long whether in town for the Halloween Parade, First Night, or Valentine’s Day. The Scarborough Inn can host your next event too, be it baby shower, reunion, retreat, or intimate wedding up to 25 guests. Photos by Orangerie Greenbrook.

GRAYCE on Dollhouse Row is one of nine (fabulously adorable) homes on Wovern Place, nicknamed Dollhouse Row, between 14th and 15th streets. She’s cute, well-maintained for her age (she was born in the 1920s), and is available for your island stay. Her historic charm is evident as you push open her turquoise door. Grayce’s kitchen and breakfast nook make her the perfect place to start your morning slowly with coffee

before a bike ride and beach day. Or savor an afternoon bite on the outside patio. One of the best-kept secrets on the island, this house is 300 feet from the bay – the perfect spot to take in beautiful sunsets.

Grayce is a two bedroom, one bath, 800-square-foot hideaway – a perfect place to relax after fun in the sun. Four beach tags, cabana, cart, umbrella, four towels, and four beach chairs are provided with each stay by your host Ginny Chappell.
