About this Book BY BILL GODFREY, GONE NATIVE COMMUNICATIONS, INC.
S
UMMER is the season of endless possibilities. Summer, especially in OCNJ, is a time of magic and adventure. School is out and freedom abounds. Closed doors and shuttered windows make way for gentle breezes and the sounds of songbirds. Summer is about no worries, no jackets and that extra glass of wine. Summer is a state of mind and nobody does summer better than Ocean City, NJ. Autumn, winter and spring each have their own allure but let’s face it, summer is the only time when you can roll out of bed and into the streets without putting on shoes – who doesn’t love that?! Winter says, “put on a jacket!” Summer says, “no shoes, no shirt, no problem, mon.” Summer is one long, sunny weekend, relaxed and less hurried. And if you’re lucky enough to be in the OC for summer, well then you’re lucky enough. And perhaps the best part of an OCNJ summer are the memories you create. Every summer has a story, and your story for the Summer of 2019 is just waiting to be created in America’s Greatest Family Resort. For many of you, we don’t need to explain why summer in OCNJ is so special, but for the uninitiated, let me offer a few highlights. The OC truly has some of the best beaches anywhere. I say this based on my travels around the world and I can say without hesitation that the beaches in OCNJ are exceptional. The sand is soft and clean and groomed everyday. The water around OCNJ is clean and regularly tested to ensure its quality. The lifeguards corps is highly professional and
regularly recognized for their contributions to the city. Beach access is easy and you can choose to be in the center of the action around 9th Street, catch some waves in the north end, or find a bit more space to stretch out by heading south. Fill your days in the OC with donuts, parasailing, waverunners, shopping in the historic Downtown, and noshes from the dozens of eateries around town. Spend your nights on the Boardwalk, or catch a show at the Music Pier – the possibilities are endless in the OC and while your tan will eventually fade, the memories you make in this town never will. This book is also a special part of the OC. It provides a listing of the best restaurants, the most unique shops, the coolest activities, the most comfy accommodations, and all the amenities you may need while you’re here. This is the most comprehensive guide to all the island has to offer. We could not produce this guide without the support of our advertisers and I thank each and every one of them for their faith in, and support of, my wife Stef and me. So please, go check them out. Tell them you saw them in this book. So welcome to Ocean City! Take a moment to browse through this book and then get out there and get crazy. OCNJ is waiting with open arms to give you amazing memories and unforgettable experiences. There are plenty of unexplored nooks and crannies on this island and your job is to get out there and live the magic of an OCNJ summer. What are you waiting for? Go!
OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE We’re celebrating double digits this year! Ocean City Magazine, our sister publication, turns 10 this season and is a must have for anyone who loves this island. Seas the Day!
OMETIMES when summer begins, I can hear that last-day-of-school bell in my mind. As if it were yesterday that I was saying goodbye to my classmates and cleaning out my desk for summer. There is arguably no better sound than that chime of freedom buzzing loud and long, followed by the cheers and laughter that can only come from people ready to embrace the change of seasons from the hustle and bustle to the long and lazy. From time to time I still find myself cranking “School’s Out for Summer” in mid-June, as I mentally prepare my checklist of all the amazing things summer offers. Windows down, flip flops on... smile from ear to ear. For me, summer is a chance to seek out your inner kid, bust out that belly laugh, and experience all there is to experience. And in Ocean City, NJ, that’s a whole lot of stuff. Ocean City is eight miles of well-kept beaches, the two-and-a-half-mile Boardwalk, the Downtown Asbury Avenue shopping district, the inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. Families from all over the country come to Ocean City to sit on her shore,
look at her ocean, feel the warm breeze in their hair and most of all, relax and build memories together. From circling around the lazy river at OC Waterpark to rushing down two different log flumes to parasailing high above the sea... there’s something new for you to experience while you’re here. If you’re looking for a fun-filled vacation (and really, who isn’t?), Ocean City has everything – beaches, Boardwalk, big-city shopping, outstanding dining, a municipal airport, golf course, recreational fields, special events, family festivities... we’re talking endless possibilities here. Together with the bustling Community Center (housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center (with a recently renovated pool), and Free Public Library), there’s the famed Music Pier (home of the Ocean City Pops and Greater Ocean City Theatre Company performances), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, you’ll always have options for fun. If it’s the beach’s siren call that brought you here, the first rule of thumb is to swim near a lifeguard. The OCBP is an award-winning organization designed to keep you safe. Take advantage.
Running parallel to that gorgeous ocean is the Ocean City Boardwalk, a two-and-a-half-mile stretch lined with shops and restaurants of every kind, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and said water park. There are also weekly family events like Mummers Night and Family Night. Get ready to strut your stuff with the best of them. Asbury Avenue and the Downtown Shopping District from 6th to 14th streets is a destination. The Historic Downtown has over 100 shops and cafes. When you shop here, you get friendly faces and conversation along with your purchases. There are also made-by-you studios and service providers along the flowered-lined street. Head Downtown on a Tuesday or Thursday from 10am-1pm for Market Days and Funtastic Tuesdays. Continuing toward the west is the Great Egg Harbor Bay where you’ll find every water sport imaginable, including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. There are great opportunities to see pristine ecosystems up close and personal. How will you “seas” the day before that bell rings again? - Stef Godfrey

PE RF E If you had one day to spend in OC where you called the shots, and made sure everything happened exactly as you’d like - what would YOU choose? We asked a few people around town that very question. We hope this gives you some fresh ideas for your time on the island. Michael Hartman Special Events Director for the City of Ocean City I would get up early to workout – but it is the perfect day, so not too early. My day would start with a trip to Ocean City Coffee Company. They make great coffee and the owners (Joan and Cal) are very supportive of the Ocean City Theatre Co. I usually get plain coffee, in the self serve area. At 10:30am, I’d go see the Theatre Company’s show School House Rock at the Music Pier. They did it as the first show ever for the children’s series six or seven years ago and are doing it again this summer. After, I’d head to Jon and Patty’s for 24
brunch with family and friends – I’d get the apple pie oatmeal, I love that. Or the omelette... one with cheese and turkey bacon. I’d probably squeeze in a workout after – I’ve been into the classes at PLAAY – or maybe go for a jog on the Boardwalk. I’d go to the beach for a couple of hours – it’s hard for me to sit still! In the evening I’d go back to the Music Pier to see whatever is playing. Either the Pops or whatever entertainment could be happening that night. At night, I’d go to my parent’s back porch and end the day with a barbecue with my family. I don’t get a chance to see them that much. I’m a night owl and don’t fall asleep until midnight.
Meryl Vangelov Owner - Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy & Fudge My best day in Ocean City would start with a walk or run on the Boardwalk. Then I would get a shot of espresso from Shriver’s Gelato. Afterwards, I’d go down to the beach for a few hours until I got hot, or I felt I needed something to cool me off. I’d be sitting in a chair under an umbrella from Bert’s Beach Rentals that they would set up for me... I like a little bit of pampering if it is my day off. I’d also splurge and get myself a nice pair of sunglasses from By the Sea Surf Shop. I’d be at the beach by myself, since
my kids would be at the soccer camp with the Nor’easters, and I would pick them up later. At that point I would go back to Shriver’s Gelato and get myself an iced coffee and a gelato. Then I’d go to the Boardwalk and do a little bit of shopping. I’d most likely get lunch at Manco and Manco’s Pizza. My new favorite store to shop in has been Sand + Stitch. I’d look for something great to wear out to dinner that evening. Dinner would most likely be at the Crab Trap. I’d probably bring a box of salt water taffy and some fudge to my friends whom I’d be having dinner with. My ideal dinner would be almost anything on the menu
C T D A Y there. I wouldn’t stop my night there though. I’d grab my kids and go to the Boardwalk and the rides. The kids would want to go on anything that is thrilling. We would probably go on the Ferris Wheel in Gillian’s Wonderland Pier to get a great view of Ocean City from above, and then they would go on the roller coasters at Gillian’s. From there we would go to Shriver’s to get some gelato, and my son would have to have a Nutella crepe. And then after that we’d have to go and give Mr. Taffy a hug. Before heading home, we would grab some chocolate covered pretzels and some more salt water taffy, and some almond butter crunch from my store. Each of us can’t help but have a sweet tooth in our family. That would be my best day in Ocean City. 25
Michael Monihan Owner - Monihan Realty My best day would be waking up with my family and doing summer fun stuff. I sometimes go to the Boardwalk or Positively Fourth Street Cafe to get oatmeal, but on this day I would start by getting breakfast at home. I like to switch it around sometimes. I’d have oatmeal, eggs, the typical full breakfast. My one son lives in Manhattan, but he and my other sons would be here for the day. After breakfast, we’d go out in our boat with the grandkids. Perhaps a ride to Atlantic City or Cape May, but we will probably just cruise around in the bay by the Longport Bridge or over to Margate. We don’t go out as much as
we used to and if there’s a chance to get out there we would take it. I have three grandkids, including one granddaughter who is nine months old. Her father would do a little fishing while we are out on the boat. For lunch, we’d go to Kessel’s Korner. It’s usually mobbed there, but it’s good. Occasionally we go up to Browns Restaurant for lunch, but we don’t usually eat on the Boardwalk because we just want to get to the beach. It’s not that far to get to the beach at Seaspray Avenue from our home. My kids will go down to the beach with their kids, and I will go to play a little golf, but meet them later. I’ll ride my bike over to the beach from the golf course. Our family would stay at the beach for
maybe three or four hours. Usually with kids, getting them going and stuff like that you are out there later than you think. Then we will go to the Boardwalk and take the grandsons up there with us. My wife likes to go to the concerts at the Music Pier. We take the kids to the family friendly restaurants, possibly the Clam Bar for this night. Our house is on the water up by the Coast Guard lagoon. We are so close to everybody. There’s a walkway around the lagoon, so there is always so much
activity. My wife and I would walk around the Gardens, and then go up on the Boardwalk again with the grandsons and ride bikes. But I don’t stay up that late, so we would not be out long.
Laura Rossi Owner - The Flying Carp Gift Gallery I would start out my best day by taking a nice long run on the Boardwalk. Probably the whole entire Boardwalk. Then I would go to Barefoot Market and get a cappuccino with soy milk and one of the awesome scones with a side of awesome conversation. After that, I’d go to the beach, probably around Fifth or Fourth Street beach. I’d lay on a blanket, with no hat or anything. Just music and a bottle of water and that is it. By myself. Then I would go to Bungalow Bowls for lunch. I would probably get some sort of acai granola bowl with
honey and bananas. After that I would definitely come into Flying Carp or head Downtown and shop. I’d bring all the stuff I bought on my trip back to my house, and maybe call a friend to tell them about the shopping trip. After that, I would have trouble thinking of what I wanted to do and have to think for a while about what I could do! I’m always working, so it’s either you are always going out and doing things, or you just don’t do it and don’t think about what you could do. Once I thought it through, I’d go out on a kayak in the afternoon for a little bit in the back bay. I have three dogs, but I would not bring them all. I would leave my German Shepard Zen at home, but bring one of my smaller dogs. Zen
always likes to jump off into the water. Then, I’d spend probably a few hundred dollars if I was in a shop with a storekeeper I liked. After shopping, I’d take Zen for a walk on the beach. He would find a stick and swim. I would throw the stick for him forever and ever, until he couldn’t see it any longer and he was tuckered out. He would greet any person or dog he came across, because he is friendly like that. Later, I would watch the sunset on the bay, Tennessee Avenue or somewhere close by.
At night I would window shop, because that’s always nice. There is always something to look at in the shops.

HEF Dave Rihl continues to kill it year after year with his Hawaiian plate-lunch concept – a protein, salad and rice nicely plated and served with a smile. Dave perfected his technique during a stint with a lunch wagon on Oahu’s North Shore in the 1990s and it is one of the best meals on the island. One bite of the homemade tropical vinaigrette or sweet huli sauce and you’ll be glad Dave found his way back to the Jersey Shore. Dave and his crew prepare dishes using only the best ingredients (you’ll taste this immediately) and served with perfectly cooked rice and a salad – not your everyday Boardwalk fare. Dave’s recipe of fresh seafood and produce, mixed with a dash of Hawaiian flair, makes this restaurant something special. The staff is charming bunch who bring your plates out hot and fast. You'll find Hula Restaurant on the Boardwalk at the end of the Colony Walk. The Colony Walk is a sort of mini-Boardwalk between 9th and 10th.

ENNIE’S Bread and Italian Market remains one of OC's favorite go-to places. With a wide but focused selection of Italian specialty items and their unmatched bread choices, they continue to pack 'em in all day long. This is a true Italian market similar to what you’d find in Philadelphia or New York. Located on the corner of 12th and Asbury, Bennie’s is filled with a thoughtful array of delicious and authentic flavors. The menu is expansive (and delicious) but, this is not a sit-down restaurant (there’s no waitress service, but there are several tables where you can eat on site). Whether you take the eggplant or chicken cutlets home or eat your pizza with prosciutto there, it will likely be some of the best Italian food you’ve tasted. Bennie’s menu includes daily focaccias, stuffed breads, tomato pie, sandwiches, soups, salads, meatballs, olive oils, and more. They cater too, so this Night in Venice order up a tray of eggplant parm, lasagna, and sandwiches. And don’t forget that Bennie’s has a great selection of dolces to finish your meal including cannoli, muffins, cookies, tiramisu, and more. ERVING award-winning food for 52 years, the Crab Trap has become a landmark sought out by locals and Ocean City visitors alike. The Wallace family started the restaurant in 1967 as a small local tavern and has watched it become a “must visit” for guests today. The Crab Trap has consistent food and family-friendly service for lunch, dinner and cocktails. Though it's known for seafood, try the daily-roasted prime rib, steak, and pasta dishes. The nautical-themed bar is large yet cozy with live music throughout the year. When you sit down, a smiling bartender will pour your favorite glass of wine or cocktail (served with fresh squeezed juice). In season, make your way to the bay and grab a seat at Crabby Jack’s outdoor deck bar, adjacent to the restaurant. Crabby Jack’s is a popular hang out (meet your friends there!) serving up lunch, small bites, and specialty cocktails overlooking the Great Egg Harbor Bay. You'll find the Crab Trap in Somers Point overlooking the Great Egg Harbor Bay.

WENTY-FIVE years ago the sitcom Friends premiered, Woodstock came back, and your favorite ice cream parlor made its Ocean City debut. Johnny B Goode may have come onto the scene in the mid '90s, but it’s been bringing old school vibes of the ‘50s and ‘60s ever since. This year, celebrate with Johnny B Goode during their special birthday year. On summer nights they'll party on with karaoke contests, magic shows, sock hops, and more free fun as they turn the big 25. This is a summer-long bash you don't want to miss. Though these Family Entertainment Nights set Johnny B Goode apart from other ice cream shops, it’s also the quality of ingredients, including the fresh baked waffles, that make them a stand out on the OC ice cream scene. That’s right, when you order waffles and ice cream at JBG, the waffle is made right then and there. How’s that for fresh, Daddy-O? Johnny B Goode serves up the freshest, creamiest, dreamiest ice creams (including some homemade flavors). Choose from malts, shakes, cones, and sundaes. There are hot and cold coffee and espresso beverages too, and gourmet hot dogs. The sundaes will make you go ape and fresh-fruit smoothies will make you flip. Two locations... 14th and Asbury and 34th and West (next to Hoy’s).

ANCO and Manco moved their flagship 9th Street store to the corner of 9th and Boardwalk last year and it is boss! It's bigger and shinier and those Manco memories that you love are still waiting to be made. The new shop's menu now includes wings, tenders, and fries. But the pizza remains as good as it’s ever been. For over six decades the Manco family has served the thin, crispy pizza pie that makes your mouth water just thinking about it. This is legendary pizza with a tangy, fresh sauce, quality cheese served piping hot with a taste that will stick in your memory like a warm summer breeze. The aroma as you walk down the Boardwalk will make you think it’s time for a slice no matter the time of day. And it’s always entertaining to watch as the pieman shapes and tosses the secret-recipe dough before sliding it into the rotating oven. It’s a show! Even the traditional sequence of ingredients is different – at Manco and Manco it’s cheese THEN sauce. Luckily for all of us, there are still three locations on the Boards; 8th, 9th and 12th streets.

HE scent of hot, sweet donuts at Nauti Donuts is so enticing, we barely made it out of the 21st Street shop before sneaking into the box for a sample. This is confection perfection. With flavors like Mermaid’s Delight – strawberry icing, fruity pebbles, and marshmallow drizzle – you’ll feel like a sailor navigating the waves of the dessert ocean. Gabby and Chris O’Hara opened Nauti Donuts last summer. Chances are good that you’ll see one or both of their smiling faces when you stop in for your morning (or afternoon) must-have. Ordering is easy – you can go with the Nauti Dozen, a cultivated crew of crave worthy confections – or you can customize your own concoctions by choosing a coating, a topping and a drizzle. They’re made right then and there in front of you. If you go with the Nauti Dozen, will it be the Salty Dog – maple icing, pork roll, and salted caramel drizzle? Or perhaps the Anchors Aweigh? Chocolate icing and Bavarian cream. Or maybe you’re more of a Seagulls' Favorite type? Chocolate icing, marshmallow drizzle, graham cracker crumbs. Then… just when you think you’ve seen it all… you spot the Jonny Tsunami. It’s a glazed donut topped with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge drizzle, rainbow jimmies and powdered sugar. Oh… and they serve coffee too! No matter what you choose, you’ll come in hungry and leave feeling Nauti.

E RECENTLY heard the phrase, "ice cream solves everything." We think it sounds better as "Shriver's Gelato solves everything," Don't you agree? Gelato, ice cream's fabulous Italian cousin, is the perfect answer to all of life's little stumbles, surprises, and successes. Got a little sunburn today? Cool down with a pina colada waffle cone. Aced that exam? Celebrate with a Stracciatella. First time up on the surfboard? That's worth two scoops of the creamy, dreamy frozen concoction that is gelato. Gelato is a yummy treat that was born in Italy. It’s similar to traditional ice cream, but it’s made with whole milk as opposed to cream so it has fewer calories. It's also more dense, creamier, and tastier than traditional ice cream. Step out of your comfort zone and try a tiramisu, mango or amaretto. Free samples are encouraged! HEN you step through the red dog house door and into Animal House, you may notice Shani and Liz chatting with a customer or two about their fur baby. They are most likely on a first name basis with the customer, and the dog or cat too, as they whisk around the shop finding the right high-quality food, treat, leash, collar, or toy for that specific pet's needs. Animal House believes in a holistic approach to pet care. Shani and Liz know everything counts from food and treats to supplements and anything else that goes into or onto your pet. Spend a few minutes in the shop and you'll understand why they've been in business for 18 years. Their knowledge is vast. At Animal House, they work with independent artists who handcraft Madein-the-USA products, so you can get the perfect gift even for hard-to-find breeds like rat terrier, labradoodle, or greater Swiss mountain dog. The apparel is fitted as if your pet went to a tailor (in one-inch increments!) and the toys are better made. Chew on that.

Morning coffee is provided each day, too. It’s all about family at Osborne’s. This year, owners Peggy Ann and Frank are celebrating 50 years of marriage! Stay where they treat you like part of the family. Customer satisfaction is Osborne's top priority. Start your day watching the sunrise from the magnificent porch while you sip your morning coffee. Later, read a book while the cool summer breeze caresses your cheeks. As the sun moves across the sky, sit and talk with your friends and fellow guests and then watch the night dwellers appear after the sun goes down. This is what Ocean City is about.
