From the Editor Simple celebrations I sit and write this column as late as I can into the month. This time I'm writing it on Mother's Day, which is an important day in my household, as it is in many of yours. I just read a small article about the founder of Mother's Day – Anna Jarvis. Though she fought to have the day recognized, she later boycotted it due to the over My three children during our commercialization of the Mother's Day breakfast. holiday. I think there's a tendency to go overboard from time to time, but when I looked around the restaurant my husband and children took me to for breakfast (Adelene in Port-O-Call), I didn't see anything like that. I saw families sitting with their moms, pink and white carnations being brought to the tables with the checks, and food being enjoyed together. Perhaps it's the simplicity of the beach and ocean that helps us remember what's most important. I suspect Father's Day, an equally important day of the year, will be similar. A happy, fun tribute to all the hard working dads out there. Speaking of dads, if you're looking for a gift idea for this special day, read my must haves on page 35. While May is a preamble to the pleasant possibility of an epic summer, June is where it really starts to take shape. June holds the promise of warm days and nights, long walks with friends, and ice cream on the porch with your flip flops on. There are many things to do this month, whether you're looking for a dose of entertainment, culture, excitement, or a mix of all three. See our events on page 26. June is also one of the most popular months to get married. I was married on the beach and so was one of our writers, Ocean City Girl. See her column on page 19 to learn about beach weddings and where to eat if you're riding the vegetarian train. If you have a question for Ocean City Girl, send it to editor@ocnjmagazine.com. You may see the q and a in an upcoming issue. See you on the beach!

Voltaco's The Taccarino family keeps the tradition alive

AKE-OUT may not immediately come to mind when you're craving an Italian dinner. Maybe you're thinking it has to come from restaurant, with a waiter serving your family in a dimly-lit dining setting. Sometimes though, you don't want to get out of your comfy clothes to have a quality meal. This is where Voltaco's comes in. After just one visit to the Italian staple on 9th and West Avenue, you'll be

hooked. At least we were, and we're not the only ones. "I've been getting the Italian hoagie for 50 years," said a customer as we waited in line. "It's just as good as it was when I first started ordering it." Voltaco's has been serving Ocean City diners since 1954. Just as you would find in a sit-down Italian restaurant, their menu includes full dinners, many accompanied with spaghetti and garlic bread. Since they've been open for over 60 years, it's no surprise that they have a loyal following of customers who

rave about how good they know their order is going to be. It's this quality and attention to detail that we found was paramount when we went in the kitchen with chef Jeffrey Taccarino. Jeff is the grandson of the original owner Theresa Taccarino. He works in the kitchen while his parents Vicki and Joe go between the service counter and the kitchen. “Just because everything gets taken out in a white box doesn’t separate this place from the best quality (place),” said Jeff. Jeff is a graduate of the Art Institute of Philadelphia and has taken on the responsibility of heading his family’s kitchen. He uses his education combined with his experience to create Italian foods that will impress even the most Italian diner. The day we joined Jeff in the kitchen, he was busy making the baked stuffed bell peppers. Voltaco’s stuffed bell peppers goes above and beyond the traditional definition of a hearty meal. I watched as Jeff placed not one, but two, large bell

peppers onto a foil plate. First though, the peppers are filled to the brim with a homemade meatball mixture (which includes some tomato sauce and parmesan cheese). These are one of the first things prepped each day. If you've stood in the take out line, you know how busy they can be in the kitchen. The importance of prepping makes the day go smoothly. The tomato sauce helps to maintain moisture inside the pepper while it bakes. Once an order comes in, a mix of white cooking wine and water fills the bottom of the foil pie plate that holds the pair of stuffed peppers. The plate is then wrapped tightly in foil and sent into a 650 degree oven where they steam for 20 minutes to half an hour, until the peppers turn a bold army green. The color of the pepper isn’t the only signifier that the meal is ready. When Jeff pulls the oven open and takes a peek inside the dish, the smell immediately hits you. Even though most employees are more than familiar with the food cooked on a daily basis, you can immediately see all eyes fly to see exactly what just came out of the oven. It’s not just good food or the family's expert knowledge keeping the restaurant together – the strong familial bond seems to be Voltaco’s secret ingredient. The Taccarino family keeps alive what started as a small side business started by Theresa six decades ago with her sister Rose Volpe. Today, they are still using many of the original recipes. “We’ve tried figuring ways to steam the peppers faster. But this is the way my grandmother did it, so I am not messing with it,” Jeff says. “I trust the process.” Originally a door-to-door real estate saleswoman, Theresa started Voltaco’s as a supplement to her income. Using their mother’s culinary knowledge, the sisters hoped to bring real Italian food to Ocean City. It soon became too popular to be simply a side job, and Theresa worked at the establishment full time in order to satisfy the appetite of hungry

islanders. After the peppers are finished steaming, they are pulled out of the oven, and the foil cover is removed. Mozzarella cheese is laid on top along with a generous sprinkling of parmesan cheese. They are put back in the oven until the cheese is hot and bubbly. Then the dish is served with a side of spaghetti with red sauce and garlic bread that is made in house like everything else. Sometimes, it's made by an special guest. “My son Jeffrey, he’s seven, was in here, helping everyone and making garlic bread,” Jeff said. “I started when I was about the same age, doing the same thing. My parents were always here, so I was always here too. I eventually worked around the kitchen, and before I knew it, I knew how to do it all.” Though Voltaco’s is steeped in tradition, they are happy to accommodate to the changing tastes of those coming to Ocean City. The Taccarinos are more than willing to go the extra mile for their customers, and work with them to get exactly what they want. “When I grew up here everything was red sauce,” Jeff said. "Now there are other options. We don’t have gluten free pasta or bread, but if you bring me your own bread, I’ll make your sandwich on it. Also, our sauces have meats. If you call me up two days in advance, I will make meat-free sauce.” Flexibility with the customers is important to keep the restaurant current – and to keep new customers visiting every summer. “If (a dietary restriction) is going to keep them from coming in, I can do it in the blink of an eye. A lot of places wouldn’t do that. Word of mouth is your biggest advertiser – if the food is good and the customer service is through the roof, people will always come back," Jeff said. "It honestly puts a smile on my face to do it.” - Text by Nick Matousch. Photos by Stef Godfrey.

Battle White Pizza

Fine specimen of a pie

Truly a good slice of pizza

I'm a carbosaurus from sweetopia, so when the option to order pizza for dinner pops up, I roar with excitement. When the option to order from Kirk's happens, it's an extra bonus. There are two things that make a good pizza joint: good pizza and good personality. Kirk's has both. It's like Cheers pub. Okay, there's no alcohol (it's a pizzeria, duh) and it's not in Boston, but when you walk in the staff shouts... "Norm!" Even if your name isn't Norm, which is odd now that I think about it. Anyhoo, at Kirk's, you'll get friendly service served up with all the pizza and toppings you'd expect to see. But when

I’m a fan of all types of pizza. More specifically I’m a big fan of good pizza. And since I’m a frequent eater of pizza in the OC, I have my favorite spots. But I like to try new things. I’d eaten at 6th Street Pizza and Grill before and found it yummy so as I searched the island for a good slice of white pizza, my mind drifted over towards Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and I found myself standing at this eatery’s counter. They had a good selection of slice-pies ready, including pepperoni, sausage and the standard varieties. I’m sometimes skeptical of pizza by the slice, but the

She Said you read the menu a little more, you'll see that this pizza shop gets its gourmet groove on. Remember when it was a bonus if your parents got pepperoni? Now, you can have a cheesesteak on your pizza! Man we live in a good era. Kirk's pizza passes the standard pizza tests. First - did it arrive hot? Yes. Were there ample toppings or did you have to excavate to find them? Toppings everywhere. This pizza literally had the exact taste of a cheesesteak. Kirk's knows good pizza and delivers on that knowledge with a fine specimen of a pie.

Kirk's Pizza, 44 Route 9, Marmora

He Said selections at 6th Street looked fresh and clean and were well protected by glass cases. My choice of white pizza was obvious so all that was left was deciding on which slice. There were several really good-looking selections including broccoli, buffalo chicken, and Hawaiian, but I settled on a bacon, chicken, ranch slice. Yummmmmmm. 6th Street truly makes a good slice. Crispy bacon, tasty chicken and that ranch dressing precisely drizzled over a well-made pie. Good stuff. I recommend it.

Famished Foodie

ISLAND GRILL

Fantastic food, fun decor, and friendly service

O

UR crew had just finished the final quidditch match of the season and we were famished. Slytherin House did their worst of course, but once Harry caught the golden snitch, it was all over and Gryffindor House had prevailed! We were all ready to celebrate and we needed a restaurant worthy of our jubilation. So in we slid to Island Grill at First and Atlantic on the north end of the island for a triumphant lunch. Not only were we winners over Slytherin, we were winners in our choice for our meal. Island Grill is one of the most innovative restaurants on the island. Chef/owner Andy Yoa likes to keep his menu fresh and his flavors are always spot on. You can head to Island Grill several times a year and be able to get a delicious new dish each time. But don’t get me wrong, this is not some huge menu. I found the menu to be thoughtful with a nice variety, but not overstuffed. There’s something for everybody and everything is carefully prepared and

12 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

JUNE 2017

tasty. There’s a good selection of burgers, sandwiches, seafood dishes, fajitas, steaks and salads. I like a varied, but concise menu, it takes the pressure off if you have a large group for dinner. “We rolled out a new menu in May,” said Andy. “We expanded our taco line. We’ve had fish tacos for three years, but now we have a pulled pork taco and a shrimp taco. We’re thinking about a chorizo taco, too. There’s a bunch of new stuff. We’re adding a seafood mac and cheese to go with our lobster mac and cheese." Ron had come down with a bad case of slug vomiting so he stayed behind, but Harry, Hermione, the beautiful and intelligent Luna Lovegood and myself, Neville Longbottom found ourselves a nice booth in this cozy restaurant and waters were quickly delivered. First off, it was a big glass of water which Luna finds intelligent (like her).

“I don’t understand it when a restaurant gives you a little glass of water,” said the always-observant Luna. “Now my water won’t run out as quickly, I won’t have to wait to get it refilled and the server has less work. Brilliant.” Andy sent out a chilled calamari salad that I just tore into. I was hoping that Luna and the crowd didn’t want any because I felt like Fluffy guarding the Sorcerer’s Stone. It had such a clean, fresh taste and the texture was just right. Luna mentioned that she always sees calamari fried. This was boiled with a firm texture on the teeth, but still with plenty of flavor. It had a nice sense of ginger and the dish transported me to a tropical island. Lots of calamari and a beautiful presentation. I got the chance to go back into the kitchen – which by the way is spotless – to talk with Andy. Another secret to his success is he’s always improving and reinvesting in his business, including two new ovens this year that are state of the art. “Those are the new babies this year. They’re

>>>> ISLAND TIME Island Grill not only serves delicious

food, but it's also beautifully plated.

Rational brand ovens. They’re this year’s model and they do everything. They grill, you can steam in there – everything. You can make beef jerky if you want – burgers and steak come out great. It’s all heat and steam and special turbo fans. Plus they clean themselves. They’re super dirty at the end of the night, but every morning they’re spotless. This will take salmon and make it juicy in the center, but the skin will be crispy. These ovens gently cook things but it keeps things juicy with less energy and less time.” If the proof is in the pudding – or in this

case the fish tacos – then I’m a believer in these ovens because the fish on my tacos was just right; a bit of a crisp on the outside, flaky and moist on the inside. Yum. Andy and his wife Allison opened Island Grill in 1996 after Andy graduated from Johnson and Wales University. Andy runs the kitchen and Allison runs the front of the house. They offer some outside tables too along Atlantic Avenue in the warmer weather. I love al fresco dining in OC in the summer. They’re also open for breakfast with the standard items as well

as some specialties including Panettone french toast. Order it stuffed with a mascarpone filling. Mmm… heavenly. Luna decided to try the cheesesteak egg rolls and, characteristically, she was spot on. They were served hot, which is very important, with a chewy yummy inside and a crispy outside. It was served with a homemade honey mustard sauce that made this a sumptuous indulgence.

I think Harry drank the honey mustard before we left. Harry and Hermione ordered, as usual, the chicken tenders. And believe it or not they’re kinda picky about them. But these passed the test. They were tender and the fries they came with were crispy. Normally I don’t eat fries, but these were so good I snuck a few. And finally Luna ordered the Jamaican Me Crazy salad that included Jamaican jerk chicken, mango chunks, strawberries, and black beans with a side of Caribbean mango dressing. “This is great," she said. “The chicken is hot and the rest is cold. There’s plenty of chicken and it’s well-seasoned. The salad is good; the strawberries and mango are both fresh. I've never had a salad with black beans and it’s awesome. Now I’m wondering

why I haven’t had a salad with black beans before.” I didn’t notice a true dessert menu, but Island Grill has some really tasty baked goods. Harry and Hermione are always in the mood for a sweet treat so we opted for a large chocolate chunk cookie – they split it and loved it. There was also a nice selection of muffins, too. A truly lovely meal at a reasonable price. Great presentation, properly prepared and everything delicious. What more could you ask for? We already have plans to return for dinner. Maybe the crab imperial for me? Until next time… cheers! Island Grill is located at 1st and Atlantic in Ocean City.

ADORABLE CREATURE OF THE MONTH

Diamondback Terrapin Photographed by Stef Godfrey

Northern diamondback terrapins exclusively inhabit coastal salt marshes, estuaries, tidal creeks and ditches with brackish water (a mix of both salt and freshwater) which is bordered by spartina grass. They are the only turtle in the world that is specially adapted to spend its entire life in this type of water. It's is a medium-sized turtle that varies in length from only 4 to 5.5” in males to 6 to 9” in females. Terrapin coloration varies, but all have a gray, brown, or black carapace (top of shell) and a lighter plastron (bottom of shell), which is a greenish-yellow. - conservewildlifenj.org

I can’t remember not riding. What is your favorite color? Red. Where did you get that lovely hat? I am an equestrian. This is a Kentucky Derby hat that I bought for a Derby event. Random fact about you? I am a teacher and I teach sixth grade. Working at Fudge Kitchen is my summer job.

In the Know with Ocean City Girl Welcome Back Beachcombers! Hope the first month of the season has been good to you. There are so many things coming up in Ocean City and I am bursting at the seams with excitement. It's easy to see the wonderful freshness in each and every day in this town. I've been here my whole life, yet I still greet the sun and surf each morning with childlike amazement and wonder as I find something new to fall in love with. This month brings us so many events like Restaurant Week, the Miss New Jersey Pageant, celebrity concerts and the start of our Farmer's Market. Before we get sidetracked with all the upcoming events let's grab our beach towel, find a soft spot in the sand and answer some questions, young hermit crabs! Do you have a question for me or need some advice? Send it in and maybe next month you will be reading your answer right here. Dear Ocean City Girl, I just recently got engaged and have always dreamed of a beach wedding. I was wondering how difficult it would be to get married in Ocean City on the beach and what I would have to do to arrange for it? Sincerely, Beach Bride  Dear Beach Bride, Congratulations on your engagement! Beach weddings are so much fun not only to see, but to be a part of and plan! I got married on the beach and will never forget the feeling that day and all the days leading up to it. With summer upon us, many brides might also like to know this answer. For a beach wedding it is free, you just need to get a permit for the area. Contact the department of community services which is located in City Hall, at 9th and Asbury. They will be able to advise if the date; time and beach location you want is available. Once you have an available day, they will get you an application for the beach permit. Fill it out and get it back in as soon as possible so your preferred choices are secured. When you get your permit, keep it safe. You have to make sure to clearly post it at your beach spot on the day of your ceremony. You don't want beach-goers to set up their towels and umbrellas where your guests will be. You can set up chairs for your guests, just remember to take them down. That's it – easy breezy! Now, you can begin all the other fun tasks of wedding planning. Enjoy your special day!

Dear Ocean City Girl, I am looking to stay in your town over the summer and I am very excited. However, I am a vegetarian. Are there any restaurants that offer menu selections for my diet? Sincerely, Vacationing Vegetarian Dear Vacationing Vegetarian, So happy you are considering this wonderful town to stay in. There is a lot to do and see and most certainly places to eat for your palate to be satisfied. My first suggestion is the Bashful Banana located at 9th and Boardwalk. They offer vegetarian and vegan options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can walk the boards or lounge on the beach then head on up for a made-to-order veggie meal to satisfy. The second option would be Serendipity Bed & Breakfast. Here you can not only book your stay but their kitchen staff is very willing to accommodate your dietary needs. My next choice would be Red's Jersey Mex Cafe at 11th and Haven. You can get breakfast, lunch, or dinner here and they offer vegetarian tacos, burritos and salads. The Starfish Cafe on 9th Street offers some amazing fruit and veggie juices that might tickle your taste-buds too. Of course, you can always ask at other local places if their cook is able to whip up something special for your dietary needs. No matter where you choose your meal will be a memorable one. See you soon. Until Next time - Wishing you all Ocean Waves of Peace, Love & Sunshine

The Interview OCHS Valedictorian Hiba Ahmad is heading to Georgetown in the fall Where do you plan to attend college? What will be your major? Georgetown University for finance. I would like to take on international business as a double major if I can. Do you participate in any extra curricular activities? What do you believe they do for your education? I’m pretty involved in my school’s KEY club, a community service organization. Sometimes we host peanut butter and jelly drives, where we make PB & Js and give them to the Atlantic City Homeless Shelter. We have gone over to Wesley Manor and put on a senior citizen prom every year. I think extracurricular activities keep me motivated. We have such a quality education at Ocean City High School and I want to take advantage of the opportunities I’ve been given. Name your best characteristic. Independence. If I don't learn something the first time, I always try to work it out myself because it feels rewarding to do it on my own.

G

OING to school right beside the beach doesn’t have to be the only fun part of attending Ocean City High School. For class of 2017 Valedictorian Hiba Ahmad, the greatest part of high school at the shore is loving what she is learning. Though she is soon moving on to college, she appreciates the opportunities Ocean City High School has allowed her and the rest of the student body. - by Nick Matousch. Photo by Stef Godfrey. What was the best part of going to school in Ocean City? I definitely think the community because it is really supportive. At Ocean City High School, everyone intermingles and it’s not cliquey. Who or what inspires you in your day to day life? My parents because they came to America from Pakistan with just their education. They sacrificed so much to come to America. What does it mean to you to be awarded class valedictorian? It is a testament to how hard I worked and how much I liked learning. A big part of being able to accomplish [becoming valedictorian] was learning to like school. My primary motivation was finding something in every subject that I wanted to learn about. What are your study habits? I like to study in my living room, where there is plenty of noise. The television is on in the background, I eat there while I study – it all helps me keep focused. Most people like to study in their room, but I like to be in the center of everything, so I don’t get distracted by my own thoughts in my room.

Who is a person you admire? Malala Yousafzai [a young women from Pakistan who is an activist for female education and the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate]. She was able to bring to light the importance of education in developing nations. I don't think there are very many people that truly appreciate how important education is, and how inaccessible it is in many parts of the world, especially for women. What is your dream job? My dream job would probably be working internationally with a nonprofit company, teaching people how to get loans and manage their finances. I think it's something people in developing countries don’t have, and I want to teach them how to manage money wisely. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would like to go to Indonesia because there is a city aspect, but also there a number of islands you can go to. Ideally I would like to visit them all. What was your favorite memory of going to school at Ocean City? Making the friends I’ve made and having the support system I’ve come to have. What qualities do you look for in your friends? I like to be with people who have fun and have perspective. The friends I have make big problems seem like small bumps in the road. Who were some of your favorite teachers? Mrs. Dill because she really cares about how well her students do. Mrs. Cox because she really gets involved with every single student. She cares not only about how well you do in her class, but how you’re going to use that knowledge in real life. She is always urging people to do things because they love them. What is your motto? Work hard and good things will come back to you.

Local Ocean It’s History POST OFFICE

Celebrates 80 Years

on OCEAN AVENUE By Fred Miller

Eighty years ago, the Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger reported on the June 28, 1937 opening of the new Post Office building: “Post Office employees accomplished the big feat of transferring the base of their operations from the old quarters on 8th Street to the new $100,000 building at 9th and Ocean Avenue over the weekend, practically with no break in postal service.” John B. Kelly Sr. served as chairman of the Post Office dedication ceremony on Saturday, August 7, 1937. The day included a four-event program: 12:30pm, Ocean City Mayor Joseph G. Champion led the formal dedication from the steps of the new building; 1:15pm, luncheon at The Flanders Hotel; 3:30pm, re-enactment of the first air mail flight in New Jersey made between Ocean City and Stone Harbor on August 5, 1912;

8:30pm, 13-event lifeguard water show at The Flanders’ pool. The history of the local post office dates back to March 2, 1881 when the post office opened for business in the Ocean City Association building on the southeast corner of 6th Street and Asbury Avenue. The Rev. William H. Burrell, one of the city’s founders, was appointed postmaster. The establishment of a United States Post Office in Ocean City was a great accomplishment for Ocean City’s founders. Ocean City’s Post Office, which was located in five different buildings between 1881 and 1910, moved into 410 8th Street on August 1, 1910. The Post Office occupied a 35’ x 79’ space on the first floor. The upper floors of the building contained four apartments. Postmaster Edward M. Sutton found the 2,765 square foot space adequate to serve the city’s year-round population of 1,950. Twenty years later, 5,463 people called Ocean City home and Postmaster J. Reeves Hildreth needed a lot more space. His many requests for a spacious new building

were always denied. Surprisingly, it was during the darkest days of the Great Depression that money became available for new post offices. President Franklin D. Roosevelt believed the post office department was the most visible form of the federal government in every community and to every citizen. He also believed that post office construction could play a significant role in revitalizing America. Suddenly, new post offices were being built all across America, including Ocean City. In 1936, Leroy Jeffries, Ocean City’s postmaster negotiated the deal which saw the federal government pay $45,000 for the 150’ x 200’ lot on the corner of 9th Street and Ocean Avenue for the new post office building. Postmaster Jeffries led the ground breaking ceremonies on July 17, 1936. The 80th anniversary of Ocean City’s Post Office building is a good time to salute and thank our local postal employees.

THE LIVE EXPERIENCE By Lauren Avellino Turton

The summer shore scene is ramping up, and the live bands are tuning up to bring you toe-tapping, dance-and-singtil-your-heart-desires entertainment. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, you’ll find live music every day of the week in and around Ocean City. The Music Pier is hoppin’ all season long, with performances by the legendary Gloria Gaynor, Vanessa Williams, Dave Mason, as well as the ever-popular Ocean City POPS. Throughout the summer there is entertainment on the Boardwalk and Downtown on Asbury Avenue that feature live music. Not only is Ocean City rockin' but take a ride across the bay, and you’ll find everything from rock n’ roll to reggae. Somers Point, Marmora, and Strathmere are a short drive away. Bring your date, or the whole family out for some live entertainment, have dinner, and soak in the sunshine or the fun atmosphere. If it’s classic rock that you roll to, you'll want to catch Nikki Davis and the Battle Roads Band at Caroline’s By the Bay. They deliver a powerful sound. Think big voice, and big passion for music. “My entire family is musical,” Nikki said. “It’s all I’ve ever known. I was singing as a baby.” Born and raised in Somers Point, Nikki headed to Nashville in her early 20s to get a real taste of the business. She’s privy to country music, but about six years ago broke into classic rock covers from Janis Joplin to Heart, and has sung her heart out on the shore scene ever since. “Once I came back and started playing more seriously, I went to open mic nights. I was fortunate to find musicians that have the same interests and vision as me,” she said. “We’ve been a solid band ever since.” While Nikki Davis is the lead vocalist, she appreciates performing harmonies with the other band members. "(Fans) like to hear male singers too, to round it out.

We all love music so much, and that’s the common thread between us. We give 150 percent into every note, every single time we’re on stage," said Nikki. "Our goal is to captivate the crowd, and none of us could live without it. I’m really lucky to perform with such talented musicians and close friends. We’re like a tight-knit family.” For the band’s updated schedule, go to www. facebook.com/NikkiDavisandTheBattlesRoadBand. Another local band on the live music scene is TRIBE – a group of veteran musicians who take great pride in their art. TRIBE drummer Blue Eagle has performed in Atlantic City for decades, and has appeared on Conan O’Brien, The Jimmy Kimmel Show, and Good Morning America. He’s performed in Las Vegas and has toured the world twice with the Philadelphia Boys Choir. All that said, Blue says he’s most satisfied with the relaxed mentality of the Jersey Shore. “I love the atmosphere of the beach. I’ve been playing classic rock like the Allman Brothers and David Bowie for years,” he said. “We’re professional musicians who recognize up-and-coming talented musicians, both younger and older.” TRIBE hosts Open Mic Night at Caroline’s by the Bay in Somers Point on Wednesdays. It’s been a successful tradition for many years. “The quality of people we see performing is amazing. They raise the bar,” he says. “These performers feel worthy and have fun. I try to mentor them, help them, show them what they can do, and inspire them to perform as best they can.” As for TRIBE, expect great classic covers, including Police’s “Driven to Tears,” Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” and ”Are You Gonna My Way” by Lenny Kravitz. Find TRIBE at www.facebook.com/TRIBESNJ and www.tribesnj.com. Turtle Heads are a hot band at Caroline’s as well. They’ve been around since the early 2000s. “(We) play our very own brand of self-proclaimed ‘turtlefied rock,’ covering some of the greatest artists from the '50s through today,” said guitarist and vocalist, David "Reds" Bridgens. “We’re creating pandemonium wherever we go!”

You also might bump into Reds at his “slice of poblano heaven” at Red’s Jersey Mex Cafe at 11th Street and Haven Avenue He’s been cooking up fine Mexican cuisine since 2005. Check out Reds and the rest of the Turtles at www. facebook.com/TurtleHeadsSouthJersey. Tucked on the bay in Beesley's Point over the 34th Street Bridge is the Tuckahoe Inn. During the summertime, the Back Bay Cafe is jumping. Flip flops are highly encouraged, and expect upbeat, live entertainment for the whole family every night of the week. On Friday evenings throughout the summer, enjoy a margarita with resident artists, The Mighty Parrot Band. They've been together more than 15 years and are still going strong. The band’s material is influenced by world beat music including reggae, African Soukous, and Brazilian Samba. They also perform covers of Jimmy Buffett, Paul Simon, and other tunes invoking the summertime vibe. The Mighty Parrot has a long history of memorable performances. They were the opening act for Jefferson Airplane and the Neville Brothers, and have two critically-acclaimed CDs. Hear their tunes on www. mightyparrotband.com and follow them at www. facebook.com/themightyparrotband. Donkey Punch is another local rock cover band, or as they say, “Just three guys who wanna rock, have a great time, and entertain the people.” Those three guys, Robb Bond, Derek Neill, and Keith Schiaffino, scored awards at the 103.7 Battle of the Bands at the Taj Majal in Atlantic City, and were named “Band of the Week” by the Atlantic City Press. Donkey Punch plays at Yesterday's Bar in Marmora and Surf Dog Bar and Grill in Woodbine, Levari's in Upper Township, La Costa in Sea Isle City, as well as other area locations. Next time you head out, check out Lew London, a local string man on guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. He’s earned a Grammy nod, an appearance at Carnegie Hall, and was named “Guitarist of the Year” by Guitar Magazine. As this summer heats up, music scene is hot and happenin' at the Jersey Shore. There’s music for every taste, and it’s a sure bet you’ll always find live and local talent to make everyone have an outstanding time.

E

VERYBODY, imagine grandpa Simpson’s voice when you read this. In 1937, a movie ticket cost a quarter. Gas was 10 cents a gallon and the average annual income was $1,788. That year, fire destroyed the Hindenburg, an enormous German dirigible, as it landed at Lakehurst, NJ, and King George VI was crowned in London, after his older brother abdicated the crown. War was already underway in Spain and China, but those bloody conflicts were merely a preview for the new World War looming just on the horizon. And in Ocean City, the Chatterbox opened. Originally on the opposite corner, in the 1940s the restaurant moved to its current location on the southeast corner of Ninth Street and Central Avenue where it’s been a bright pink landmark ever since. Owners Bob and Maria Boyar, who bought the business from longtime owner Marie Repici about four years ago, say they have a new menu and a new chef, along with a commitment to preserve a business that has been part of family vacations for generations. “It’s the fathers bringing their kids or the grandfathers. Here’s what they say; it’s the first place they come when they’re on vacation, or it’s the last place when they’re on the way out so that everybody can meet,” said Maria Boyar, who joined her husband at a center table in the dining room to talk about the restaurant and its history. The Chatterbox is now open seasonally, from 8am to 8pm, and the Boyars say they are there almost all of that time. But back in the day, the place was open all year, all night and all day. “Back in the ’50s and ’60s, this was the place to be seen,” adds Bob Boyar. At the time, there were numerous rooming houses in Ocean City, and there were beds for rent upstairs from the Chatterbox. “This was

their hangout, especially after the night was done and they’d all come back and get burgers and shakes.” Jean Campbell opened the business in a building that had been built in the 1920s, designed by Vivian Smith, the architect who also designed The Flanders, the Music Pier and other local landmarks. The Boyars have some of Campbell’s original menus, and some are hanging on the wall, showing her innovative home service, which would deliver “bridge sandwiches” for 60 cents a dozen, or Abbott’s ice cream for 30 cents a pint. “Just call Ocean City 2076,” the menu reads. Campbell operated the restaurant until 1968, and the next owner only had it for a few years before selling to the Repici family in 1970, according to a history posted at the Chatterbox website. According to the Boyars, Campbell had the building painted bright pink, but the second owner went with a different color. “Rumor has it that the second owner painted it green, and the city went ballistic,” said Bob. “Marie Repici painted it back to the Pepto Bismol pink, and it’s staying that way,” adds Maria. “We take pieces off of it to take to the painters when we have to fix something.” Maria says they’ve been working to restore some of the feel of previous decades on the inside as well. While 1950s-style diners come in and out of fashion, the Chatterbox abides. “We are the original,” Bob said. “You have the '30s, the '40s, the '50s and the '60s in here,” Maria added. There had been

The Chatterbox Restaurant is the big pink building at 9th & Central in OC.

numerous photos showing old Ocean City on the restaurant walls for years, but a lot of that was lost in the damage from Hurricane Sandy, which flooded the building and forced a half-million-dollar renovation. One piece that was saved is a muralsized painting from the late Ed Wismer, a longtime Ocean City artist who painted an image of how the Chatterbox may have looked in 1940. On the sound system is a steady stream of oldies, including the Beach Boys, Chubby Checker and the Dixie Cup’s 1964 hit “Chapel of Love.” That’s the theme through the day, although Maria says she has to go with some Sinatra for the breakfast rush. The Boyars got their start in Ocean City when they bought Tory’s Ice Cream at 3308 Asbury Avenue, a shop they ran for years before selling. It was later closed and demolished. “After Tory’s, we always wanted to come back to Ocean City because it’s such a great town,” said Bob. “We stumbled across the Chatterbox being for sale.”

They decided to talk to Repici. “I actually knocked on the window,” Maria said. They saw an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer saying that Repici was looking to sell it quickly, or would consider listing it for auction. That could lead to demolition. “That’s what happened to our old business. We really didn’t want to see that happen again, because we knew what that felt like when it was gone,” Maria said. Bob added, “So we came in to take care of it, and to build it back up and to be the guardians of the building and the business.” They brought in new equipment, hired a new kitchen staff, and brought in the chef they worked with at Tory’s, Art VanDerPool III. “We knew it needed a makeover from a menu standpoint,” Bob said. “We really turned it around. It’s been getting busier and busier.” Bob said they only use fresh ingredients, roast their own meats and make their sides. He talked up the crab cakes, and that they can’t make enough of the seafood chowder. The

Chatterburger is still the number one seller, Maria mentioned. There is also an extensive ice cream menu, including homemade waffles, along with old fashioned soda fountain offerings like malted milkshakes, Shirley Temples and different varieties of egg creams, a New York deli specialty that, for the record, includes neither eggs nor cream. “We wanted to be kid friendly and family oriented, and we’ve achieved that,” Maria said. There was a small outside dining area when they bought the building, but Maria said they’ve expanded it, and allow dogs in that section. They even sell dog friendly frozen yogurt. Almost every day, a customer comes in with a story of a previous visit, or a brief history lesson, they said. For instance, Grace Kelly, the film star who summered in Ocean City with her family before she married Prince Rainier, worked as a waitress at the Chatterbox. “We were told she only worked here for a short period of time because her mother did not want her out late,” said Bob. “Her curfew was before the shift ended,” added Maria. City2Shore Gourmet

With a new Downtown location, owner Jackie Dougherty is ready for a new evolution Text and photo by Bill Barlow

J

ACKIE Dougherty calls her olive oils and balsamic vinegars “Divino,” Italian for “divine,” for a reason. With products she says she is proud to represent, and a new store opening at 709 Asbury Avenue in Downtown Ocean City, the founder and owner of City2Shore Gourmet sees a divine hand guiding this part of her life. Perhaps it was chance that Jackie was connected to the suppliers who create her oils and vinegars, just as her relationship was ending with another company. She sees it as more, though, just as she sees the opportunity to expand her business at the same time her personal life changed dramatically as a sign that someone is looking out for her. “This is my year. I can feel that I’m crossing over,” she said in a recent interview. For the past eight years, she’s brought her olive oils and balsamic vinegars to events and farmers markets each season, describing herself as a “street girl with a cute apron,” while caring for her parents. Jackie’s parents were childhood sweethearts, her dad a World War II Navy veteran, and were married for 70 years. Her mother died last fall, and her father passed soon after. A week later, she signed the lease on her new store. “My faith is the only thing I hold on to. That’s why this is all happening. It’s really exciting to me,” said Jackie. She’s going to try to split her time between the farmers markets and events and the store this summer, which she acknowledges is not going to be easy. 44 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

JUNE 2017

“It’s going to be hard to divide myself. I really want to build my shop up, and I really love the markets,” she said. The store will give her a chance to expand what she currently offers. She’s looking at artisanal cheeses, frozen pasta, and local honey. When she was at Bayfest in Somers Point, she met someone who kept free range turkeys and chickens. She hopes to get fresh, local eggs for the shop as well. “I’m hoping to evolve,” she said. She’s met numerous farmers and others at the markets over the years. “I have a chance to pick up the phone and do business with them now.” Jackie says her life has meant reinventing herself every decade. “By 50, I was a widow. When the market crashed, I lost everything. Now I just turned 60 and I have a shop. It’s pretty cool,” she said. It was wonderful for her to see the unconditional love her parents shared. “If you would read the letters that my father sent to

>>>> OLIVE YOU City2Shore Gourmet has a new shop opening up at 709 Asbury Avenue in Downtown Ocean City.

my mother during the war, you just can’t read them without a box of tissues,” she said. Jackie is not sure how she will divide her time between the shop and the events she visits, but she wants to keep serving the faithful customers at the summer farmers markets in Stone Harbor, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, West Cape May and elsewhere. “I really prayed about a shop for a long time,” she said. An integral part of Jackie being able to open up her shop, seems to be her relationship with her supplier. Soon after Hurricane Sandy, Jackie met with a new representative to discuss getting oils and vinegars directly from Italy. They made a deal in January of 2014 and they had 122 cases, a summer’s supply, for her at JFK in time for that Memorial Day on a handshake. “They did this for me. That’s staggering,” she said, describing them as some of the

most amazing people she’s ever met. Jackie sells balsamic vinegars and oils under her own “Divino” label, including vinegar glazes and infusions with fruits, garlic, peppers and more. She also offers sea salt, including some for flavored rubs. “I’ve been selling my own product. I love what I do,” she said. “I would never have thought that Hurricane Sandy would be the best thing that ever happened to me.” She ramped up that enthusiasm in 2015, when she toured Italy to meet the people making the olive oil and balsamic vinegar. That included a visit to Modena, Italy, to meet people whose families have been making balsamic vinegar in the traditional method since 1905, from an aged reduction in grape vinegar that concentrates the flavors and sugars. She also visited where the olive oil has been made for hundreds of years and got to hang out at a truffle farm, where she said she tried the best truffles she’d ever had.

She plans to return to learn more about the processes, and hopes to participate in an olive harvest. “I really want to shake some trees,” she said. She’s also learning more about olive oil, and recently received certification as an olive oil sommelier. “When I signed up for the course, I had trouble just saying the word sommelier,” she laughed. She attended a week of classes at the International Culinary Center in Manhattan, which included lessons on production and styles, and extensive tastings. “So now I know a whole lot about olive oil," she said. "It was an amazing thing.” Customers can order from the website, city2shoregourmet.com, or visit the new shop at 709 Asbury, or call 609-525-0339.

RESTAURANT WEEK

It's time to try that spot you've been eyeing up! Text by Sam Florio and Stef Godfrey

N

O MATTER your age, young or old, whether you have eight Facebook friends or 1,000, your Facebook and Instagram newsfeeds are more than likely filled with pictures of food. New ideas, how-to videos, recipes of beautifully plated, complex dishes that make your mouth water even if you just finished a meal. If you are anything like us, these pictures of bright, swirly sauces and captions with fancy descriptions make you laugh and think to yourself, "I will never be able to make that." Enter Ocean City Restaurant Week, where participating restaurants offer menu specials all week long. From June 9 to June 16, you can try the fancy (or not so fancy) plates you’ve been dreaming of digging into. You can taste and try new things, or visit your favorite local haunts without breaking the bank. It's easy to plan ahead, too. Visit www.eatinocnj.com to see which restaurants are participating and what menu specials they are offering. The Ocean City Restaurant Association, made up of about 50 restaurants, created Restaurant Week for just this purpose – to

make it easy and affordable for diners to try a new place, or a new dish at their favorite place. And just like the city of Ocean City, Restaurant Week is refreshing and unique. This isn't just a week for dinner specials. Ice cream parlors, breakfast spots and fancy dinner places alike offer specials. "Since Restaurant Week falls in early June, it appeals to locals and visitors alike," said Bill McGinnity, owner of Cousin’s Restaurant. Since the event falls before most kids are out of school, it allows for the perfect date night or weekend family adventure. "With the option for two entrees for the price of one, you can step away from the chicken fingers and venture out into the land of chicken tortellini or pasta and clams," said Bill. Bill has been a chef for 39 years and is dedicated to only using ingredients without antibiotics or hormones, and everything is cooked from scratch. "Cousin’s has a way of making you feel the family love with each dish," said Bill. Here you may leave full of amazing memories as well as delicious Italian food. OC has so many cuisines that you can challenge yourself to try as many new ones

as you can during Restaurant Week. This is a town where by the end of the night your belt buckle can easily feel a wee bit snug. Sometimes it seems that every Downtown street you walk down has an intoxicating smell of Mexican food, Caribbean cuisine, crab fries, homemade bagels, Greek cuisine, cupcakes, donuts, and even smoked meats and barbecue. One walk along the ocean on the Boardwalk allows you try every type of pizza you could dream of. Last year's participants included 701 Mosaic, Blitz's Market, Jon and Patty's, Wards Pastry, Johnson's Popcorn, Yoasis, Varsity Inn, Spadafora's, Adelene, Positively Fourth Street, and Airport Diner, plus many others. Make your way to the bay and you’ll find Frankie’s on the Bay where different concoctions for breakfast, lunch and dinner make your tastebuds sing. Frankie’s on the Bay has a five-star rating on Facebook that still doesn’t do it justice. The inside is decorated with old-school railroad pictures and a menu to match. Enjoy their classic eggs benedict or explore the crabby-eggs benedict with crab meat and feta cheese crumbles. For lunch split a pound of Frenchfries in crazy combinations with your family or friends. My belly is rumbling thinking of the hot tamale fries with jalapenos, cheddar cheese and sweet thai chili sauce! Perhaps you're the type to skip dinner

and go straight for dessert? One of OC's ice cream parlors, Johnny B Goode’s, is offering a restaurant week deal as well. "We offer two for one waffle sandwiches," said owner Jane Davis. "Restaurant Week gives us a great opportunity to have customers try our waffles." The waffles sandwiches are two fresh, hot Belgian waffle wedges with your choice of any ice cream offered. "We serve it on a plate and sprinkle it with powdered sugar. People eat it with a fork and knife because it's so big," said Jane.

Every family tradition or fond memory I have to look back on is filled with smells of baking cookies or going out to eat and

digging into large plates of pasta. Twenty years ago, when I would vacation in Ocean City for our favorite week of the year, my entire family sat around a table at Cousin’s

Restaurant to end the week. Now, I'm 25 years old, and telling YOU to make some of the Ocean City restaurants a part of the memories that you look back on. JUNE 2017

Whether it be playing tag or a sport such as football, soccer, or baseball, kids have always wanted to run. It’s the first activity where people learn to keep themselves in shape, and the one they’ll do and enjoy the most over their lifetime.

R

UNNING is a great warm weather activity. As the weather grows cold, you might tend to leave running behind for a while. You focus on work or move your exercise to machines, until the weather starts to warm again and the itch of cabin fever starts to call you outside once more. You may try to cool that fever by going for a short jog, or a short walk somewhere close to home. One of the best ways, though, may be running a 5k race. And if you're lucky enough to vacation or live in OC, you have many choices. Running has long been used as a way to relieve stress. By hitting the street or the treadmill, the confusing jumble of thoughts plaguing you fades away. Your mind gets caught up in the here and now as you pay attention to your surroundings. The sights around you become your focus as you push along. And as you hit your stride, the runner’s high starts to kick in, and worries and troubles in your mind seem to sort themselves out. A 5k race is a short enough run where you get into that runner’s high, without having to set out on too far of a trek. It’s quick and fun, and gets people to push their body's limits. “A 5k is the perfect distance if you want to compete and get out there,” says Dustin Laricks, organizer of the Peyton's Promise 5k. Dustin's daughter Peyton was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, or CDH. Today, according to their website, Peyton continues to grow and make daily improvements. The Peyton’s Promise 5k race takes place June 10 in Sea Isle City. Laricks is spot on – a 5k is a fantastic distance for every type of runner. It’s not overwhelming if you’re just a casual runner wanting to experience the thrill of racing. Most people who have never done a 5k cross the finish line with a smile on their face, utterly overjoyed they were able to accomplish

what they did. If you’re more a veteran runner looking to push yourself, local 5k races are a great speed challenge for you to see how fast you can really go. If you’ve ever aspired to run a full marathon or even just a half, a 5k is the first step in training for those distances. The short distance of three and one tenth miles is the perfect run to begin building your endurance. So with so many out there, it's hard to say no and delay training for one. The best thing about running a 5k race is that there is always one happening around the area. From the Ocean City Police Chase on June 10 to the Half-Marathon and 5k on September 24, local listings are filled with races, and you’ll always be encouraged to come out. You don’t have to be a fantastic runner to be able to enter, you just have to be someone who is up for a good challenge. The challenge begins with the training. A convenience of training for a 5k or even any of the longer races is that you don’t have to go anywhere but the road or your neighborhood gym to do it. All that’s needed are a pair of sneakers, and even then, those are optional if you decide to run on the beach. Running a 5k race is just as much a social occasion as it is a physical endeavor. The races seem to always be held for a cause, hoping to spur awareness in the community. By going to a 5k you can not only benefit yourself through exercising, you can learn about an issue affecting your community. Not only does it help get a message out, but running events get you out of your own head. With positive music at the starting line and cheerful officials, a 5k environment encourages participants to be light and cheery. At Ocean City races there is always a crowd to cheer you on. From start to finish, there are people on the sidelines, watching and encouraging their friends, family, and even people they don't know, to keep on running. It’s an unexpected and pleasant surprise if

you’ve come alone. The spectators want to see you succeed, and maybe even give you the motivation you need to finish even if your mind and body are telling you otherwise. "A 5k is great event that can attract so many people that want to be inspired or inspire others into being healthy and having a goal," said Lisa Rumer, program supervisor at the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center. "If you look at so many of the events in OC whether it's a city event or someone having an event here, they choose a 5k because of the popularity. It's a nice distance to be able to trek through town and get a feel for what OC is all about. And whether you've been training for it or just supporting the cause or you're here on vacation and want to participate in a certain activity, it's a great distance to choose." One of the best things about the races are the shirts that come with the price of registration. The admission fee goes to a great cause, and generally you get a tee shirt as a thank you. Whether a simple cotton tee-shirt or a comfortable Gore-tex garment, some organizations try to create a memorable take away for supporters. For a lot of participants, a race shirt may become their next favorite shirt. When those who have attended a particular 5k for years first come to a race to see the current year’s design, there is always a healthy suspense in the air as people speculate if this year’s shirt will be as good as the year before. Sometimes the design is consistent year to year with only the date changed, but other times there is a completely new design. So what are you waiting for? Find a 5k, lace up, and get yourself to the starting line. The Ocean City Police Chase 5k starts at 8am on Saturday, June 10. Register at www. ocpba.com or on the day of the race starting at 7am. Race begins at Wonderland Pier, 5th & Boardwalk. The OC Half-Marathon and 5k are on September 24. Visit www.ocnj.us for more info. 49

Storied Past by Deborah Worchel Photo by Pam Leypoldt

Listening to awardwinning writer Jonathon King talk, it is hard to believe that there was ever a time he didn’t know he was a writer and storyteller. Tall and lanky, it's easy to see the former basketball player in him. As he selects a table where he has both a clear view of everyone coming and going from the coffee shop and his own back safely against the wall, it's also easy to see the somewhat hardened crime reporter. As soon as he begins to talk, however, the cadence and descriptive ability of a natural born storyteller emerge, despite his protestations that it took him years to know he had it in him. He is quick to tell me that his first summer in Ocean City, when he lived with his college roommate Scott Erb and the Erb family, was the spark that lit his creative streak and set him down the long path to becoming a writer. “Scott’s entire family was art inclined,” Jonathon said. “His mother was a school teacher, his sisters were both artistic, and his brother was an art major. I never knew such possibilities existed and I had never seen so many books in one house before in my life. I went on to become a much bigger reader because of that summer.” His favorite books to read remained those he had been introduced to nearly by accident in a high school class he refers to as “reading for jocks.” “On game days, the jocks would all be put in a classroom and told to just sit quietly and read to relax before our games. I put my hand into the box of books and pulled out Deep Blue Goodbye, by John MacDonald, a crime novel set in Florida. I thought, 'Hey, books are kind of cool,' and so the next week I pulled out

51

another by him. Then I started spending my own money for his stuff.” A native of Lansing, Michigan, Jonathon has some traits in common with Cuthbert, the main character in his new historical fiction novel, The Sindia Promise: Life After The Shipwreck, which debuts this month. “Like Cuthbert, I am an unapologetic working class guy. If I am not working, I am not happy.” He holds his hands out for emphasis and continues, “There is a huge part of the Ocean City population that does that, the same thing, especially the year round population. That’s my background, and that’s what I connect with. But I think every writer does that, spills himself out onto the page.” Similarly, the main character, Max Freeman, in the eponymous series which made Jonathon King a name in the writing world, is based on a real person whom Jonathon knew and worked with during his time as a crime reporter. He rolled his eyes a little and said, “I once had an editor ask me, ‘Now, would he really do that?’ and I could say, ‘Well, yes he would, because I have seen it happen.” He pauses, take a sip of coffee and continues, “There’s very little in my books that I didn’t actually see. I try to change the names to protect the innocent.” Prior to becoming a novel writer, or even a crime writer for the newspaper, Jonathon dropped out of college. “After a second summer on the Ocean City Beach Patrol with Scott, I just decided I wasn’t going back to school in the fall when he did," said Jonathon. "So I started my wandering phase, picking up odd jobs across the country from September to June.” Two things remained constant during this time. He always knew he would return to Ocean City for the summer as a member of the OC Beach Patrol, and as he traveled, the first thing he did in each new town was read the local newspaper. Though it may have surprised him at the time, what happened next for Jonathon now seems to make perfect sense. He decided to stay in Ocean City for the 52 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

JUNE 2017

winter and got a job painting houses. “Not exactly art,” he laughs, “I still didn’t know I had that in me yet. But that winter, I did see an ad in the Ocean City Sentinel for a newspaper writer’s class at the community center. I thought to myself, ‘I bet I can do this’ and I signed up.” Soon after, he applied to Temple University for journalism and ended up in a class which led to his first job in the field. “I was the lone 24 year old in a class with 18 year olds,” he explains, “So when the professor asked who would like a job as a copy boy for the Philly Daily News, every hand went up.” He tilts his head and smirks a bit, “But when the professor proceeded to tell us that the job was five days a week from 11pm to 7am, my hand was the only hand still raised.” On nights that the police reporter called out sick, Jonathon ended up doing his job as well. Eventually, the crime reporter job became his own, and he found himself walking into true life crime scenes and mysteries that he had previously only read about in books. Upon graduation from Temple, he was offered a job as a crime reporter in Florida, took it, and spent 20 years covering crime stories in the sunshine state. Throughout his career, Jonathon continued reading crime and suspense fiction. Once again, he began to think to himself, “I think I could do that,” so he worked out a deal to take his vacation time for 1999 and 2000 all at once. After packing his car with supplies, he headed to the mountains of North Carolina where relatives owned a summer cabin that he could use for the months of January and February. “I took my key out the of ignition when I parked and I didn’t put it in again until my vacation time was up,” he said. The product of that vacation time was Jonathon’s first novel, The Blue Edge of Midnight, titled in a deliberate nod to John MacDonald. It won the Edgar Award for best first novel. With seven Max Freeman novels under his belt, as well as a historical fiction novel set in Florida, Jonathon returned to the

place that had ignited the creative spark in him so many years ago in order to begin work on a new novel. “The turn of the century is my favorite time period as well as a pivotal time in the history of Ocean City,” he said. “I immediately thought of the Sindia. It is such an historical icon here, so many are fascinated by the ship and the stories that accompany it. I didn’t want to rehash those though, so I needed something new. And since I am a fiction writer, I can be inspired by history, but not bound by it.” He grins mischievously, sips his coffee, and adds, “Since I am also a mystery writer, I needed a dead body. In real history, no one dies in the Sindia. We all know that, but this is a work of fiction and the mystery begins with the sea bag owned by the dead officer.” The dead officer is not named for a real crew member, nor are the two main characters in the novel, but the novel does contain characters inspired by real people as well as many Ocean City landmarks. In keeping with his need to be close to a story, perhaps the legacy of years as a crime reporter, Jonathon rented a winter condo steps from the site of the crash on the 17th Street beach during the first winter he spent researching the novel and beginning to write it. As he was finishing it, he rented a room with a view of the Lifesaving Station on the corner of 4th Street and Atlantic Avenue. The Lifesaving Station plays a central role in the novel and Jonathon wanted to be able to look out the window and see the story as he wrote it. He hopes those who read the novel will all find something in it that resonates with them. “It is the job of the writer to create scenes the reader sees in his head. Each reader will see it a little differently, but I think if you come to Ocean City, there is something in this book that you will recognize, even though it is set 100 years in the past... the feeling of walking down the beach at night, of falling in love with someone under the stars on that beach, the first time you walked into Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy, the experience of being on the Boardwalk, all of these things are timeless and it is my job to convey that timelessness in my writing.”

Talented Ocean City by Bill Barlow

T

AP dancers? Check. Singers and musicians? Of course. Poems and dramatic readings? Sure, why not? Okay, how about hula hoop dancing. With multiple hoops? That’s who won last year. It’s almost time for the annual Ocean City Talent Show, an eclectic presentation at the historic Ocean City Music Pier at Moorlyn Terrace and the Boardwalk, set for 7:30pm on June 24. Tickets are $10. The event began as a way to give the many, many young people that are part of the Ocean City Theatre Company another venue, and maybe a little more stage time, according to Michael Hartman, the company’s founder who served as artistic director for 10 years. “We have so many kids that come through our program that wanted more performing opportunities, so we looked at it as a way to feature those kids,” he said. “But after the first year, we really expanded it to feature the whole community.” Now in its fourth year, the talent show draws people from Ocean City and well beyond looking for a chance to perform. The deadline for sign-ups was in May. “I think it’s cool because the Music Pier is such a great space. Saturday night is the talent show, and Sunday night, Vanessa Williams will be there performing on the same stage. That’s pretty exciting to say you’re performing on the same stage as Vanessa Williams,” Hartman said. Williams is set to perform with the Ocean City Pops 7:30pm, June 25, the orchestra’s season opener. Tickets for that show run $65 to $85. At the talent show, Hartman said there are a lot of prizes. In each age division, there are winners and runners-up, as well as overall awards in vocals, instrumentals, dance and miscellaneous, a catch-all that includes monologues and poems. There’s also fan favorite prize, based on the amount of applause for each performer. “We try to share the wealth,” said Hartman.

Then there’s the overall winner, who gets invited back to perform the next year. The other winners get a trophy, which Hartman said is pretty cool, and the overall winner gets $100. Last year, it was Middle Township High School student Chloe Selover, the hula hoop performer. “It was really cool, really different,” said Hartman. Each year, the contest is judged by three entertainment professionals and is hosted by Miss Ocean City. For 2017, that’s McKayla Perry. In previous years, Hartman said, the event has included two tap dancing brothers, and entire dance schools, as well as bands, singers and more. While it started as an outlet for young participants in the Theatre Company, he said it is now about 90 percent community members who aren’t involved in the company the rest of the year. Proceeds benefit the Ocean City Theatre Company, which is in transition this year. This is the company’s 10th year as a non-profit organization, and while Hartman continues to serve as a volunteer, he is no longer the artistic director. He won’t have time after recently accepting a job as Ocean City’s events coordinator, taking on some of the duties of Ocean City’s beloved PR guru Mark Soifer, who retired last year. Over decades in the post, Mark launched numerous special events, and created a variety of characters. Hartman said he has great respect for Mark. “We wouldn’t have the theatre company today if it wasn’t for his vision, and his willingness to push the envelope and create new things,” he said. “This town owes a lot to that man.” Hartman, a 1998 graduate of Ocean City High School, worked with the Ocean City Recreation Department on a two-week theatre camp when some community members approached him about creating a theatre company.

He said his theater work has to be strictly separate from his full-time city job, and in fact, wouldn’t even talk about the talent show for this piece until after city work hours. It’s clear that Hartman is proud of the company, and the progress made over a decade when a tough economy has meant many local theaters have closed. “We did the best we could to withstand the test of time, and I’m really proud of the company for that” he said. About 400 kids go through the theater camps each summer, and the company presents four to six fully staged Broadway musicals with professional actors each year, auditioning locally and in New York. There is also a five-show children’s series for the junior company, which includes appearances at the Music Pier, Cape May’s Convention Hall and Stockton University. This year, they’re set to present “Pippin the Musical” and “Seussical.” He said the junior company has the same standards as the professional company. They also work with the same set and costume designers, “so they get to work with a professional production team.” The professional company will present “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Mary Poppins,” which will include flying effects. Hartman said many theatergoers are amazed at the quality of the productions the company presents at the William and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center at Sixth Street, which shares a building with Ocean City High School. “Our performers are the same people you would see at the Walnut Street Theater or in a national tour, and those tickets are now $100, he said. “People are often blown away,” he said. “People will come in, and they’re like, ‘holy cow, this is not what I thought it would be.’" 53

BOOK OF THE MONTH Welcome to Night Vale

From the creators of the wildly popular Welcome to Night Vale podcast comes an imaginative mystery of appearances and disappearances that is also a poignant look at the ways in which we all struggle to find ourselves...no matter where we live. Located in a nameless desert somewhere in the great American Southwest, Night Vale is a small town where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are all commonplace parts of everyday life. It is here that the lives of two women, with two mysteries, will converge. Nineteen-year-old pawn shop owner Jackie Fierro is given a paper marked "King City" by a mysterious man in a tan jacket. Everything about him and his paper unsettles her, especially the fact that she can't seem to get the paper to leave her hand, and that no one who meets this man can remember anything about him. Jackie is determined to uncover the mystery of King City and the man in the tan jacket before she herself unravels. Night Vale PTA treasurer Diane Crayton's son, Josh, is moody and also a shape shifter. And lately Diane's started to see her son's father everywhere she goes, looking the same as the day he left years earlier, when they were both teenagers. Josh, looking different every time Diane sees him, shows a stronger and stronger interest in his estranged father, leading to a disaster Diane can see coming, even as she is helpless to prevent it. - goodreads.com

B.E.F.A.S.T. TO FIGHT

STROKE

Helpful ideas from AtlantiCare experts “Time is brain when it comes to treating strokes,” says Jorge L. Eller, M.D., cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgeon, AtlantiCare Neurosciences Institute, Thomas Jefferson University at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. “The longer it takes for treatment to start, the greater the risk of permanent brain damage or death.” Eller suggests using the acronym B.E.F.A.S.T. to identify symptoms of stroke and dial 911. Letters represent:

B: Balance. Does the person have a sudden loss of balance? E: Eyes. Has the person lost vision in one or both eyes? F: Face drooping. Notice if one side of their face droops. Ask them if their face is numb. Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven or lopsided?

A: Arm Weakness. Ask the person if one arm is weak or

numb and have them raise both arms. Do you notice one arm drifting downwards?

S: Speech Difficulty. Do you notice slurred speech? Is the

person unable to speak or are you having trouble understanding what the person is saying? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence back to you.

T: Time to Call 9-1-1. If someone shows any of these

symptoms, immediately call 9-1-1. This is where time is crucial. “Stroke is an emergency,” says Eller. “Be FAST to save you or a loved one’s brain – or life.”
