I

Nobody, accustomed to all four seasons, but that I say. Magic permeates this place. Many of you are nodding doesn’t mean I like all four seasons, at least not equally. There is nothing that compares your heads in agreement right now and for those who are still skeptical I say breathe. Take in a deep breath of to summer, especially a summer in Ocean City. I see photos of people laughing and smiling as they Ocean City, let it fill your lungs and entire body, and romp in the snow, clad in their oh-so-fashionable Gor- you will begin to understand what I’m talking about. And that is the essence we’re trying to capture in Tex snow suits and I think “good for them.” But that’s not for me. I mean, I still like a good snow storm and this book. This book is more than photos and words, the dream of a white Christmas is enticing, but my it’s an homage to the enchantment of Ocean City. It’s natural state is boardshorts and flip flops. This is your island.
Y
Welcome to Ocean City, NJ!
OU CAN ALMOST taste the salty air when the Atlantic sits in front of you, crashing and retreating all for your serenity and enjoyment. If you’ve been camping, chances are you’ve heard of “fire tv” – it’s when you sit around the campfire just watching it wiggle and snap. In OC, you have “ocean tv” – all you have to do is pull up a chair on our coast and be entertained as you watch mother nature at work. And boy, do we have a good beach to sit said chair. As winter gets a little long in the tooth, visions of pizza with friends and long nights on the Boardwalk dance in our heads. Fall and spring are lovely in OC, but summer, oh, those summer nights. Tell me more, tell me more, you say? Our island is eight miles of well-kept beaches, the two-and-a-half-mile Boardwalk, the Downtown Asbury Avenue shopping district, the inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. Families from all over the country come to Ocean City to sit on her shore, look at her ocean, feel the warm breeze in their hair and most of all, relax and build memories together. Ocean City receives accolades just about every year for having one of the best beaches in America. In 2015, the island won tons of awards including Top 5 Beaches from today.com, a People’s Choice Award for Best Downtown, and Best Boardwalk from New Jersey Monthly. It’s no surprise then that the city takes pride in keeping the beaches clean, safe and ready for your chairs, umbrellas and sand castles day after day. If you’re looking for a first-class vacation, Ocean City has everything – beaches, Boardwalk, did we mention that already?, big-city shopping, outstanding dining options, a municipal airport, golf course, recreational fields, special events, family festivities... we’re
talking endless possibilities here. Together with the bustling Community Center (housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center, and Free Public Library), there’s the famed Music Pier (home of the Ocean City Pops), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, we’ve got plenty for you to do. Let’s start at the tip of the Atlantic. Ocean City has miles of soft clean sand from one end of the island to the other. Put on your explorer hat and take a beach walk. They are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in summer. For more details, see the events on page 10. Guarding these beaches is the Ocean City Beach Patrol, one of the oldest in the country. Follow their instructions and remember to always SWIM NEAR A GUARD and listen for their whistle. Move inland a few feet and you’ll come across the Ocean City Boardwalk, a two-and-a-half mile stretch lined with shops and restaurants of every kind, movie theatres, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and a water park like no other. The Boardwalk hosts free family events such as Character Nights, where you can meet the Boardwalk Mascots and get their autograph. When it comes to shopping, Ocean City has what you need. Asbury Avenue and the Downtown Shopping District from 6th to 14th streets is a destination spot. Our Historic Downtown is a collection of over 100 shops and cafes. OC retailers put their heart and soul into their businesses. And that makes for a topnotch retail experience all year round. Mixed in are made-by-you studios and service providers along a street lined with bright flowers and smiling people. There are also a ton of special events in the Downtown during the year, including Funtastic Tuesdays, holiday shopping days and a lot more. See page 78 for more
info on the Downtown, between the beach and the bay on the Avenue. Continuing toward the west is what the locals refer to simply as “the bay” – Peck Bay and the Great Egg Harbor Bay – where you’ll find every water sport imaginable, including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. There are great opportunities to see pristine ecosystems up close and personal. AQUATIC & FITNESS CENTER The Center is a multi-faceted facility that encourages people of all ages and fitness levels to participate in programs that promote good health. In other words, it’s an awesome place to work out. The Center has strength training and cardiovascular equipment; a 25-meter saltwater pool, a studio for aerobics, yoga, and pilates, racquetball, babysitting, and youth programming spaces. Located in the Community Center; (609) 398-6900. OCEAN CITY HISTORICAL MUSEUM OCHM depicts early Ocean City’s history with period room displays and vintage clothing, a large display of old Ocean City photographs and postcards, dolls and toys. Displays of items from the city’s past will delight visitors. The Sindia Room features a scale model of Ocean City’s most famous shipwreck and a lighted eight-by-eight-foot stained glass window showing the Sindia under sail. Located in the Community Center; (609) 399-1801. THE OCEAN CITY FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY The Ocean City Library strives to be the “intellectual, social and cultural heart of our community, providing a place to go for information, literacy and cultural resources, in a comfortable, attractive and convenient environment.” Of course you can borrow books at
the library, but there’s more than that. The library has movies to entertain you, newspapers to inform you, programs and workshops to enlighten you. And more. (609) 399-2434. OCEAN CITY MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE Ocean City has a public, 12-hole, par three golf course. Set in the scenic meadows of the bay area, the golf course provides a beautiful and fun way to spend a few hours of the day in Ocean City. All ages are welcome, but children under 12 years old must be accompanied by a parent. Located at Bay Avenue at 26th Street. Call (609) 399-1315. OCEAN CITY POPS ORCHESTRA Every year, the Ocean City Pops brings internationally-renowned guest performers to the stage at the Music Pier. Visit oceancitypops.com. COMMUNITY ART PROJECTS CAP keeps the island decorated in fun, lovely art work that comes up when you least expect it. Visit communityartprojects.com. OCEAN CITY THEATRE COMPANY The OCTC works with the Ocean City Pops orchestra to put on wonderful fully-staged Broadway-style productions. Every summer there are three to five performances under the direction of Michael Hartman. OCTC also runs a recreation program to bring the theatre to young children who love the arts. Summer Nights ( onthe)
Boardwalk

I
t’s a Friday night in July, and the tough work week is in the books. You’re headed down the shore with the family for a fun-filled weekend in Ocean City. You look forward to a relaxing day on the beach, a slice of fresh-from-the-oven pizza, and an exciting night on the world-famous Boardwalk. Whether you’re a kid, or a kid at heart, there’s no doubt your visit includes a stop at Ocean City’s iconic amusement piers – Playland’s Castaway Cove and Gillian’s Wonderland Pier. For decades, these parks have delighted thrill-seekers time and time again.
Playland’s Castaway Cove Playland’s Castaway Cove fired up its amusements and opened its doors back in 1959. Created by David Simpson, the original park had only a handful of rides. Now owned by Simpson’s son Scott, Playland expands from 10th to 11th streets on the Boardwalk, and boasts 31 rides, three 19-hole mini golf courses, a go kart track and lots of delicious treats. A large portion of the park sits in front of the iconic Flanders Hotel. Some might remember the giant salt water swimming pool in that spot which was open from the 1920s through late 1970s. In 1996, that land went up for sale, and the Simpson family bought it which allowed them to triple the size of the park. Kids love the variety of Playland’s exciting thrill rides, including the 100-plus foot Double Shot tower, Gravitron, and log flume. For the little tykes, there’s a miniature train that circles the entire park and “Arrgh,” there’s the giant pirate ship welcoming guests on the Boardwalk complete with a giant colorful parrot. New this year, the highly-anticipated GaleForce Roller Coaster that’s sure to be a fan favorite! The 125-foot coaster features a 64-mph launch and a 90-degree drop as it winds fast and furious over the park. Playland’s Vice President Brian Hartley knows GaleForce will be a premiere piece of the park, and bring new elements to both Ocean City and the state of New Jersey. “We’ve been working on the design and tweaking the technology for four years,” he says. “Scott has come up with some revolutionary ideas to make the new coaster work within Playland’s space. Most other local amusement parks at the seashore don’t have anything like this.” The GaleForce Roller Coaster is scheduled to open this season, along with two other smaller, family-friendly coasters. Hartley says, as he reaches his 25-year milestone as part of the Playland team, he’s proud to see how much it’s grown. He started working there at the young age of 14. “Scott and I go way back. Our dads and uncles worked there together in the ‘60s,” he says. “Our
families have known each other for many, many years. The Simpsons are very generous and give a lot back to the community and to the staff. They helped mold me into the person I am today. It meant a lot to work for that family, and that’s why a lot of my own family, from parents to brothers to uncles and cousins, have all worked there. For decades, they’ve taken care of us.” Hartley admires how close knit the Playland team has become under the leadership of the Simpson family. “From the full-time staff to college kids and
high school students, employees are recognized as an intricate part of the business. It’s more of a family atmosphere for the kids than just a job. We have parties, mini golf tournaments, and other fun activities,” he says. “We’re like family. It’s truly a family affair.”

Wonderland Pier Wonderland Pier is a sacred place where millions upon millions of shore-goers have visited and had the time of their lives. The late David Gillian opened the original Fun Deck on the Boardwalk at Plymouth Place in the early 1900s. His son Roy expanded the family business by building Wonderland at 6th and the Boardwalk. At that time, the park had ten rides including the Ferris wheel and carousel. Both have become iconic pieces of the pier. Jay Gillian, the Mayor of Ocean City and third generation owner of Wonderland, looks back fondly
upon his family’s legacy. “In 1924, our family purchased real wooden horses from Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters for the carousel,” Jay says. Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters is one of the oldest existing roller coaster companies in the world and is based in Hatfield, Pa. “I was about 13 or 14 and worked at a bike rental spot, but I really wanted to be in the amusement park business. When the guys would work on maintaining the carousel and other rides, I’d follow them around, carry their tools and watch what they were doing,” says Jay. Jay Gillian worked his way up the ranks quickly, learning all the ins and outs of the family business.
One job, he says, rings true. Literally. “The best year of my life is when I was the ‘Ring Boy.’ Until this day, that was the best summer I ever had.” If you’ve been a summertime visitor to OC, chances are you have fond memories of the Ring Boy too. The Ring Boy stood sentinel at the Carousel and when it was time for the brass rings to appear, he would feed them into the steel arm and watch as riders tried to grab one as they circled. For this writer, as a kid growing up in Ocean City during the summer time, I remember my frequent visits to Wonderland. My nightly goal was to visit the Ring Boy and grab that brass ring. Call it a rite of passage into serious Boardwalk status. I’d ride that carousel until I got that brass ring. Who knew all these decades later I’d interview the lord of that coveted ring. “I loved my job and meeting new people at the carousel, the Ferris wheel, around the park,” Jay says. “The City Jet was my ride. That coaster was from New England. My family bought it and rebuilt it and it was amazing.” The City Jet wasn’t just Jay’s ride; it rushed its way into many a rider’s heart – including my own. It took me more than a decade to work up the courage to ride it, but when I finally took the plunge I absolutely loved it. I also have fond memories of their special winter attraction. “Back in the ‘70s, early ‘80s we had an ice skating rink at the park and everybody loved it,” Jay says. Whatever the season, the Gillians are all about the family-friendly experience and want to make sure everyone – no matter your age – has a fun and pleasurable time in Ocean City. “At the end of the day, I just love Ocean City. With the two amusement parks, we have a wide variety of rides. Your time here is always going to be great,” he says. “Ocean City is unique. We bring the Disney touch. Families can do everything they want. From the beaches to the bays to jet skis, golf, and tennis. From amusement rides to music and salt water taffy. It’s all here.” Gillian’s Wonderland Pier 600 Boardwalk Ocean City, NJ 08226 (609) 399-7082 gillians.com; facebook.com/GilliansOCNJ

WHALE WATCH Last fall while many of us were just starting to long for the heat of summer, we got an unexpected, thrilling surprise that brought our focus back on the ocean. A humpback whale treated us to a few Nat Geo moments as it popped up through the glassy sheen of the sea. Here are a few pictures of the gorgeous ocean creature that called Ocean City’s waters home last December. Photos by Jesse Stanislaw and Daniel Maimone

Got it Made This is the story of three locals with creativity and entrepreneurship in common: they each create and sell their own product line right here in OC. By Lauren Avellino Turton Photos by Stefanie Godfrey
Y
OU’RE sitting on the beach enjoying a gorgeous summer day, relaxing and chatting with your friends. You start talking about how cool it would be to open up your own restaurant, run a fancy boutique, or invent a new product that flies off the shelves. You’re brainstorming, you’re imagining, you’re starting to seriously think how your idea could actually become a reality. Well, the truth is, it can. Just ask “The Makers” – three local entrepreneurs who are realizing their dreams and making them come true. Meet the owner of a popular Boardwalk jewelry store, Anthony Bayham; Shannon Oteri, the Ocean City High School senior who designs her own clothing line; and Shelby Treadwell, the mastermind behind all-natural laundry soap. THE JEWEL OF THE BOARDS Anthony Bayham’s been working on the Boardwalk since he was 13 years old. At that time, he worked for a company called Ocean Sales, but after a few years became a part of The Jewelry Hut team. “When I was young, I thought I would go into law enforcement,” he says. “But then once in retail I just kept going back. I loved being up on the Boardwalk, seeing the beach, the people. I couldn’t ever leave.” After ten years of working with the former owners, he took the leap and took over ownership of the store at 13th and the Boardwalk. “In my first year of owning the business, I increased sales by 47 percent,” he says. He’s continued to bring serious success to The Jewelry Hut. You’ve likely seen Bayham’s exclusive collections while strolling the Boards. His pieces celebrate this iconic Jersey Shore town and all it has to offer – from the beaches to ocean to family atmosphere. “I carried the Ocean City Hook bracelet exclusively until it was sold to Henry’s and I knew I needed to come up with new, special items,” he says. “I came up with the Ocean City Memories Collection and began to design charms representative of Ocean City businesses, nautical themes, things that remind people of the seashore.” The first one he designed is the Johnson’s Popcorn charm. Next, he made Manco and Manco, a Boardwalk pizza staple. “I’m most proud, though, of the Boardwalk charm. I drew it from scratch and it’s the best charm I’ve sold yet,” says Bayham. “Now we have a total of 200 beads and they’re selling very well. It’s been fantastic.” Business hasn’t always been smooth for The Jewelry Hut. It suffered a major setback during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
“We were very much affected by Sandy, but not the hurricane itself. My power went out so I had no alarm system and we were looted. I lost more than $60,000 in product with a retail value of $135,000. It was rough.” But Bayham and his staff overcame this hardship, and business is once again booming. He couldn’t be happier. “Personally this is very rewarding. I get to see people everyday up here in the sunshine and they come say “hi” to me. I look out at the ocean and it’s so relaxing. Even if I’m having a busy day, I don’t feel stressed up here. Plus, I have a ton of great customers that support me. It’s great.” MENDED THREADS Think vintage renewal clothing. Mended Threads is a handcrafted, reconstructed clothing line created by Shannon Oteri and her friend Sophia Talese, who are just 17-yearsold. The young ladies take thrifted flannels, distress, bleach, and redesign them into hip and happening pieces. Oteri, a senior at Ocean City High School, says she’s been intrigued by fashion for as long as she can remember. “I’ve always loved it. Over the summer, my mom surprised me and got me into Drexel University’s fashion design summer camp and that’s what really sparked the most interest,” she says. “I’d be walking around Ocean City and realized everybody was wearing the same sort of thing, the same style. My goal is to make different, unique pieces.” She’s also the stylist for Ocean City magazine’s “The Look” column. “I spent the year doing the styling for the magazine every month and absolutely had a great time. It inspired me to pursue my career,” she says. So with a solid goal in mind, Oteri and Talese put their passion for fashion to work about a year ago and developed Mended Threads. The one-of-a-kind clothing line is more of a comfort-based, weekender type style. “I’ve always loved flannels and like to incorporate denim into my wardrobe,” says Oteri. “While I do like trendy clothing, I always make it my own. And it’s always about comfort.” Mended Threads is typically targeted to teenage girls, with clothing prices just right for that age group. Currently, the clothes are available online at mendedthreadsusa.com or on their Instagram page. Oteri says she’s proud that shoppers from all over the country have ordered her creations. Also, look for her during Ocean City’s Fall and Spring Block Parties and the Farmers Market. This Fall, Oteri’s off to University of Delaware to study fashion design and merchandising and hopes to keep growing her business. With her drive, talent and lovely personality it’s a sure bet she’ll be a success.
“My favorite part about our business is seeing people wear that things that I make,” she laughs. “I enjoy seeing them happy. Every day in school, I see at least three or four people wearing my stuff with a smile on their face. And it makes me smile.” CLEAN LIVIN’ Shelby Treadwell graduated Egg Harbor Township High School with her sights set on a business degree. The 24-year-old headed up to Paul Smith’s College in upstate New York. While attending the Adirondack-based school, she majored in business management and entrepreneurial studies. For her senior project, she created environmentally-friendly laundry detergent. “My boyfriend up there, who’s now my fiancé, developed a nasty rash and eventually we tracked it back to the store-brand laundry detergent we were using to wash our clothes,” she says. Treadwell decided why not make her own? And so she did. “I spent a lot of time on Pinterest looking up recipes and other makers’ ideas,” she says. “I started testing and testing on my family and friends and figuring out what the best combination would be.” After getting it just right, Treadwell introduced her new line called Northern Suds, which produces and sells all-natural, homemade cleaners and detergent. The first product, laundry soap, was introduced fall of 2013 and was an instant success. She took third place in the energy/sustainability category of the North Country Regional Business Plan Competition. “I try to be conscious of sustainability and not waste anything,” she says. “My recipe is simple and organic. The soap is made from a blend of castile soap, borax, washing soda, and essential oils. It’s allergy friendly and even the packaging is completely decomposable.” After graduating college, Treadwell moved back to the area to grow her business and is doing just that. In addition to the laundry soap, she has created fabric softener, pain rub, and trail spray to keep away the pesky bugs during outdoor activities. All the products, she says, are selling quite well. “This December I started my Etsy shop and it’s doing great,” says Treadwell. “I’ve been going to shows and farmers markets in the area too and people seem to love it. I’m thrilled!” When not busy creating her next product, Treadwell works at Little Egg Harbor Soap in Marmora. Stop by and say hello or follow her on Facebook and Etsy to see where she’ll turn up next!
From top to bottom: Northern Suds’ product line will amaze you with their scents, Shannon shows off her flannel shirt, and Anthony Bayham’s Ocean City Memories collection.

OU’LL FIND HULA RESTAURANT on the Boardwalk at the end of the Colony Walk. The Colony Walk is a sort of mini-Boardwalk between 9th and 10th streets. As for why you should go... because Chef Dave Rihl’s cuisine is based on the Hawaiian plate-lunch concept – basically a protein, salad and rice. Dave perfected this technique during a stint with a lunch wagon on Oahu’s North Shore in the 1990s and it is one of the best meals on the island. One bite of the homemade tropical vinaigrette or sweet huli sauce and you’ll be glad Dave found his way back to the Jersey Shore. Dave and his crew prepare dishes using only the best ingredients (you’ll taste this immediately) and serve them with perfectly cooked rice and a salad – not your everyday Boardwalk fare. Dave’s recipe of fresh seafood and produce, mixed with a dash of Hawaiian flair, makes this restaurant something special. The staff is charming bunch who bring your plates out hot and fast.

HE CREW BEHIND FRANKIE’S on the Bay is originally from Hazleton, Pa., a coal-mining town in the northeast section of the state with a quirky attitude and a huge portion of pride. You’ll notice that pride when you walk in the doors. The place is clean and bright and you’re always greeted with a smiling face. Smiling faces are all well and good, but it’s when you dig into their hearty menu that you’ll get a sense of this outsized pride. Start your morning with a Brakeman Favorite (a brakeman you might have guessed, helped stop the train carrying the coal). Try a Classic Eggs Benedict. Or get adventurous (like the Moravian missionaries that settled Hazleton), with a Crabby Frankie Benedict, a Coal Dust Benedict, a Holy Cannoli or a Chunky Monkey. Wondering what’s in all these yummy-sounding items? Stop in and find out for yourself. And don’t forget their own-brew coffee – Heroes Brew. Heroes is a gourmet coffee line that is the exclusive coffee at Frankie’s. Heroes Brew is another way to salute America’s heroes one cup at a time.

RANKIE’S ON THE BAY is located at the corner of 11th and Bay. Any restaurant that has an item named the “Explosive Burger” should definitely be on your list for a visit. The Explosive Burger is named after the practice of dynamiting for coal in the Coal Region of Northeast Pennsylvania. The owners of this cool little joint are originally from Hazleton, Pa., where coal is king, and they brought that heritage them with them when they opened this restaurant a couple years back. It’s not the surfboards and seashells you’re used to, but it’s still a darn tasty eatery. You need to try this family-friendly restaurant serving pasta, burgers, lasagna, homemade soups, salads, and a variety of special entrées. Big groups welcome. Catering and take out available. HIS IS YEAR TWO of Bennie’s Bread and Italian Market. It was formerly just Bennie’s Bread, but the new Bennie’s is so much more. The “new” Bennie’s Bread is filled with so many delicious foods, you may never leave. Seriously. New space, new menu, new uniforms, new pizza oven. What was formerly a great store with quality products is now a true Italian market similar to what you’d find in Philadelphia or New York. The menu is expansive (and delicious), but this is not a sit-down restaurant (there’s no waitress service, but there are several tables where you can eat on site). Whether you take the eggplant or chicken cutlets home or eat your pizza with prosciutto there, it will likely be some of the best Italian food you’ve tasted. Bennie’s menu includes daily focaccias, stuffed breads, tomato pie, sandwiches, soups, salads, meatballs, olive oils and more. They cater too, so this Night in Venice order up a tray of eggplant parm, lasagna, and sandwiches. And don’t forget that Bennie’s has a great selection of dolci to finish your meal including cannoli, muffins, cookies, tiramisu and more. Try the filled shortbread cookies, you’ll thank us later.

At LEH Soap, they hand make their line of hair and body products in small batches, including their original product – soap. LEH small-batch soap leaves your skin clean without stripping its natural oils (you won’t find any harsh detergents here or animal by products – only pure food grade vegetable oils). With over 50 scents and new ones added seasonally, you can choose from fragrance or essential oil soaps as well as seven unscented therapeutic soaps for skin problems including their newest beer bar made with locally-crafted Tuckahoe Brewery beer. N ITALIAN ARIA starts playing in your head the moment you step outside of Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy, turn left and realize these confection wizards have another shop dedicated to the creamy, dreamy Italian gelato. It’s a high note, indicative of something amazing, and something amazing is happening at Shriver’s Gelato. This is some of the best gelato you’ll ever have. Now, if you’re left wondering just what gelato is, we’ve got answers for you. Gelato is a yummy treat that was born in Italy. It’s similar to traditional ice cream, but it’s made with whole milk as opposed to cream so it has fewer calories. Yippee! Shriver’s also has coffee, cappuccino or espresso to start your day, or to give you a jolt if you need one late at night. Starting last year, they also began selling warm crepes to pair with the gelato. You’ll find the traditional trio of flavors like Vanilla, Strawberry and Chocolate but the nature of true Italian Gelato is to produce original flavors that aren’t typical of ice cream, such as tiramisu, mango or amaretto. Free samples are encouraged!

O YOU KNOW HOW many Boardwalk mascots there are? If you’re not even sure what a Boardwalk mascot is, then you need to head up there on a Sunday summer night for Character Nights starting at 6pm. That’s when all the mascots (think Fry Guy, Cell phone, Mr. Taffy) sign autographs in front of the Music Pier. Hug ‘em, high-five ‘em, give them a wave hello – and get their signature in your autograph book. Thursday Family Nights has entertainment for everyone. From 7:309:30pm, stop and listen to live music (there’s something happening on every block!) while you hang out with your friends and family. If you think you can strut your stuff with the best of them, here’s your chance to prove it... Mummers Nights run every Tuesday – listen to the string bands, be in awe of the beautiful costumes. All events run through July and August from 6th to 14th streets on the Boardwalk. OC packs a lot of fun on its wooden planks, it’s true. HE CHIP MILLER Surf Fest is a grass-roots, annual family event in Ocean City to help raise awareness for Amyloidosis. Since its inception 13 years ago it has grown to be one of the largest surf events on the East Coast attracting some of the biggest names in surfing: Bethany Hamilton, Brad Gerlach, Rob Machado to name a few as well as local NJ Pros Dean Randazzo, Sam Hammer, Rob Kelly, Andrew Gesler, and Matt Keenan. The Surf Fest and Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation were created in memory of Chip Miller in 2004. Chip, who proudly raised his family in Ocean City, was known worldwide for his passion for Corvettes and resilient positive attitude. In 2003 Chip was diagnosed with a rare disease called Amyloidosis, which occurs when abnormal protein, called amyloid, build up in one or more organs to cause a malfunction. Just a few short months after Chip was diagnosed with Amyloidosis, the world lost an incredibly special person. The foundation needs your help to prevent this from happening to other families. So, grab your surfboard and come catch a wave for a great cause on Friday, July 29.
