From the Editor Balanced
I had to work Mother’s Day morning. Around 6am, my three kids piled into bed with my husband Bill and I and we laughed, smiled, cuddled and sang (the abc song to be exact). When Bill said, “it’s 7:50!” I jumped out of bed and ran to get dressed. I was supposed to be on the Boardwalk in ten minutes. That wasn’t going to happen. It took a lot of effort to leave my warm, cuddly crew that morning to go to work. It’s a balance and it doesn’t always stay even keeled. I was bummed to leave. Bill, who knows the right thing My daughter riding the fire truck to say, reminded me I was lucky to work at Wonderland Pier in May where I do and to go and embrace it. So I did. And as I drove, alone, down Bay Avenue on that soon to be sunny Mother’s Day, I saw a family of geese heading toward the Wildlife Refuge. The mom and dad were escorting their fluffy yellow chicks toward greener pastures. Then, as I sat with our intern Briana on a gray Boardwalk bench with my hot OC Coffee Company coffee in hand (Pirates Brew, case you were wondering) a pod of dolphins swam by and the sun warmed my skin as it finally escaped from the clouds. And just like that, my anxiety melted away and I started to enjoy the moment. I am lucky to work by the beach in America’s Greatest Family Resort. We are all lucky, in fact, to live, vacation, and/or work here. Even the animal families seem happy call this place home. If you’re an animal person, check out the dogs and cats available for adoption at the HSOC. These little pets are adorable and will give you unconditional love (as long as you give them a constant stream of treats) – just kidding. OC is filled with human treats. This month, the Famished Foodie takes the super crew to the brand new second location of Sandwich Bar. See how the adventure went on page 12. New businesses are opening on the Avenue and on the Boardwalk. A quick walk down either and you'll get excited for what's to come. Today, I ran into Bill Westerman, the owner of George's Candies. He gave me a tour of his newest Boardwalk shop getting ready to open on the 900 block. It's beautiful – tile floors, gleaming white woodwork, fresh paint, you name it. And all I kept thinking the entire tour was... are there any macaroons here? Enjoy your June on the island. I wish you lots of hydrangea blossoms, sweet smelling roses and long walks on the beach. And of course, a macaroon or two. Til next time,

Facebook Fan of the Month LAURIE BOATMAN My perfect day in OC begins when I wake to the sounds of the seagulls and the smell of the salt air. My family and I have a delicious breakfast at Yianni's Cafe and then begin our day. While strolling the Boardwalk on our way to the Seaport Village Mini Golf (my favorite course), we stop at a couple of our favorite stores-Mia's Christmas Gallery and Henry's Fine Jewelry. After the golf game, we decide to walk Downtown to Asbury Avenue to browse through Stingray and B&B Department Store. We walk to Bennie's Bread to get our favorite rolls to make sandwiches before we head to the beach, bringing M&M cookies and blueberry scones for a snack later. After lunch, my family and I head back to our guest house to get ready for the beach. The rest of the afternoon is spent at the beach – soaking up the sun and enjoying the refreshing waves in the ocean. After a relaxing afternoon, dinner is next on the agenda. Our favorite place for scallops and shrimp is Spadafora's Restaurant. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is inviting. After dinner, it's another trip to the Boards. We go to 7th Street Surf Shop, the Shirt Shack and Ocean Treasures to name a few. After all that shopping, we sit on the benches and do some people watching – a favorite past time. The night wouldn't be complete without my favorite treat; a mint and chocolate twist cone from Kohr Brothers. After a very busy day, it feels good to go back to the Oceanaire and fall asleep thinking of all of the day's activities and dreaming about the ones yet to come...

Jennifer Bailey Super Scone Maker at Barefoot Market
“Have fun with what you're making” Owner Jennifer Bailey hand cuts her buttery, soft scones
S
OMETIMES ALL you need is a good cup of coffee and a sweet treat to perk you up in the morning or afternoon. At OC's Barefoot Market, this simple truth is their mantra. On a May afternoon, I walked through the door to meet up with owner Jennifer Bailey, who was going to teach me how to make her famous scones. I nearly passed out from excitement... if you've bitten into one of her fabulous fluffy, crunchy, soft scones, you know what I mean.

JUNE 2016
I'm not alone in my fangirl admiration. Jennifer opened her West Avenue shop in 2014 to a line of customers that led out the door waiting for her superior coffee and buttery scones. It was at her former shop Who's on First where she noticed most customers wanted those two items. So when Barefoot opened, she kept things simple and gave us what we wanted and a few other tasty items. Yes! A quick glance around the bright wellappointed shop and you'll spy artisan cheeses, baguettes, cookies, to-go items,
chicken salad sandwiches, and of course, her rich scones. “I like getting up early by myself, getting a cappuccino, throwing the scones in the oven. Now I do it everyday,” Jennifer says. You'll find her up in the early morning making large batches of tens of dozens of scones alone. Not an easy feat as anyone who’s pulled out a batch of cookies looking like used coals knows. There's an exact science to baking when you want consistent quality and taste. As Jennifer pulled out her large, silver mixing bowl she taught me the steps of her recipe. She tossed in the flour, sugar and baking soda with quick ease, but these first ingredients were carefully measured. As she began cutting in the butter, she said some of the mixing should be done by hand to break it up evenly. Jennifer’s scones are arguably one-of-a-kind for this reason; there are no machines. “We try to keep it simple, we just crank it out by hand,” she said.
Pinching pieces of butter between her fingers she warned me about over mixing. Mix it too much and the scones wouldn't have a fluffy center; it would cause them to be tough. Next came buttermilk and more mixing with nothing more than a wooden spoon and her own womanpower. One of the final ingredients to be added more or less depends on the day of the week and customer cravings. The idea to try her hand at scones hatched on the complete opposite side of the country. Jennifer tasted some made by a woman famous for making them in San Francisco and was inspired. When she was back on the right coast, she pulled out a cookbook recipe for scones and began making the golden triangles for her customers. Today, as she pulled out a red composition notebook from a lower shelf of her stainless steel kitchen island, Jennifer explained that she and her staff
try to give the customer what they want. Written in the notebook in parentheses next to various flavors and dates was the word “request.” Jennifer gets ideas from customers and tries new flavors to add to her repertoire of already established favorites such as the buttery, crumbly butterscotch. The notebook serves as a planner that becomes a record for the year’s recipes. “I can look at this and tell what flavors we had for Mother’s Day last year,” Jennifer explained. Favorites like Mexican chocolate, fig and brown sugar and butterscotch are proven favorites; but Jennifer likes to try fresh ideas. There are currently about 20 scone flavors in rotation...and if a customer makes a special request for something that’s never been done before, she will do her best to make it happen. On this particular afternoon, she tossed in a handful of butterscotch chips. Forming the thick dough into
a flattened round on the counter, she halved the batch and eyeballed the proportions and cut again. Being skittish of baking myself, (too many rock-hard baked goods), I was impressed by how quickly she measured and mixed her batch. After the cuts, the recognizable triangles had formed. With the repetition of every morning scone making, Jennifer’s kitchen moves are quick, but calculated. “In doing it by hand instead of using a mixer, it’s not all exactly uniform. That’s what gives it the homemade taste,” she said. In their final stages, the scones are baked until the outsides are golden with a caramelized, crisp edge – their last stop before being scooped up by a customer. Paired alongside Barefoot’s La Colombe or Small World coffee – this is a simple delicious breakfast or anytime snack. Between the smell of the bold, rich coffee beans and the fresh baked scones, stepping into Barefoot Market is like

walking into your mom's kitchen. It's just comfortable and easy. Customers can ease into their morning routine with a strong coffee or enjoy a temporary getaway during a lunch break for a sandwich made with a fresh, homemade baguette, or, of course, a scone or two. As for my baking anxiety, Jennifer assured me she didn’t start cooking until about my age (I'm in my mid-20s) and had some good advice for any novice baker. “Don’t try too hard to make it perfect. Start with what you like until you see what works. Have fun with what you’re making,”
she said. “If you have a love of doing it, it will turn out.” - Hanna Schweder and Stef Godfrey. Photos by Shannon Oteri.

Battle of the Spinach Salad
See the freshness!
No beach bloat here
Spinach salads are good when you live by the beach, or even casually come to the beach. Blah blah, need to look good, blah. You can pretty much eat as many leaves as you want without feeling guilty. Yes, spinach salads are good. But do you know what’s even better? A spinach salad with lots of crumbled bacon on top! The divine swine makes everything better… except perhaps chocolate, that doesn’t work for me. Anyhoo, Yianni’s knows how to do a salad. Give me the greens, yes, but make sure there are lots of goodies on top to distract from the fact that instead of a honking cheeseburger, I’m eating a pile of veggies. There needs to be enough toppings so each bite is filled
If you like spinach then I’ve got a salad for you. Lots and lots of big leafy spinach that would make Popeye cry with delight. Truth be told I’m not much of a salad guy. I prefer meat. Lots of meat. Burgers, steaks, beef tacos - stuff like that is my bag. But sometimes you need to keep an eye on calories, especially around summertime, and spinach is a great alternative to a heavy burger. Spinach is a nutrition superstar and is possibly one of the best sources of iron on the planet. It’s loaded with vitamins and minerals, some of which are hard to find in other foods. Spinach offers twice as much fiber as other greens so when it comes to satiating
She Said with flavor… and the toppings need to be fresh. At Yianni’s you can see the freshness straight away. The tomatoes are bright red, the eggs are perfectly boiled, the bacon is crisp and the dressing is delightfully tart. These weren’t just thrown on there to satisfy dieters. This salad was thoughtful. The red onion paired nice with the tomato; the mandarin orange contrasted well with the vinaigrette. At the end of my lunch, I was doing the salad scavenger hunt… pushing aside leaves of spinach to get to the leftover pieces of orange, bacon and egg. That’s how you know it’s a winner.
Yianni's Cafe 841 Asbury, Ocean City
He Said your appetite, spinach will keep you full. This salad came with a zesty raspberry vinaigrette on the side that gave the dish a nice zing – much better than a heavy cream-based dressing. I like my shrimp with a bit more seasoning and some more grill time – I like to see the grill marks on my protein – but otherwise the shrimp were a good size. This is not a salad overloaded with too many extras to weigh you down. This dish avoided the heavy bacon, cheeses and dressings that can ruin the spinach’s fresh flavor and make you bloated on the beach.

SANDWICH BAR
The fantastic five relish in simple food executed properly at this new Downtown spot
W
HO DOESN’T like a sandwich? It’s the perfect food. Let these words of wisdom from my better half sink into your grey matter and know that a good sandwich is a thing of beauty. And also know that Ocean City has an unassuming little bistro (two actually) serving sandwiches so simple yet so terrifically tasty, your taste buds may actually explode with delight. It’s called the Sandwich Bar. Naturally. And the owner is Dennis D’alesandro, a laid back Jersey guy with a mop of dark hair and the potential to head for the beach if the surf is up. “We do simple things right,” said Dennis “Things you’ve been eating all your life, like a chicken cutlet, we just execute it properly, like an Italian grandmother would do it. We’re not taking frozen chicken cutlets out of the freezer and dropping them in the deep

fryer. There’s nothing fast about this.” And there you have it, the uncomplicated secret to their success; simple things done correctly. There’s nothing fast about this food and you can tell. I had assembled the entire crew for this mission: Myself, Tony Stark; Captain Steve Rogers; Dr. Bruce Banner; Godzilla and Pepper Potts. We also brought backup in the form of U.P. and A.J. The backup superheroes had arrived from parts north with the sole purpose of helping us keep Godzilla under control – she’s a very sweet monster, but when she starts breathing fire watch out. We had spent the entire day at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, where the Gillian family had turned over their park to hundreds of students from Upper Township
schools – thanks Gillian's! Needless to say we were hungry. The Sandwich Bar has recently opened a second location at 955 Asbury Avenue in the heart of the historic downtown. The original is at 3255 Asbury. And we rolled into that place like, well, like… um, like a hoard of superheroes hungry from a day of riding the rides! Pepper Potts discovered the original Sandwich Bar at 33rd and Asbury just last summer. She hauled me down one fine summer day (are there any other kind in the OC?) and I was hooked. Their chicken cutlet sandwich became a staple of my diet for the rest of the summer. So as we invaded their newest location I was expecting good things. I was looking for a good sandwich – no, I was looking for a truly tasty sandwich – I was not interested in “good.” Good is the enemy of great or something like that. I get tired of good. I had an itch and I wanted it scratched. I was hungry baby, really hungry, and average food was not gonna satisfy me. And I am so happy to announce I was not disappointed. Pepper Potts and A.J. ordered the chicken cutlet – a wise choice. Cap, Hulk and Godzilla each ordered hot dogs, U.P. went with the burger and I, after much deliberation (Should I get the pork? Maybe I should get a cheesesteak or the bacon

avocado sandwich…hmm), went with the lobster roll. “We have a very limited menu,” said Dennis. “We put so much into each item that we don’t want to overbook ourselves. When you open a menu with six pages, how much care can really go into each of those items?” This philosophy of food permeates the entire establishment. I noticed hardly any décor at the Asbury Avenue location and to be honest I found this reassuring. I find comfort in the fact that Dennis and his crew seem almost completely uninterested in anything other than their food (except maybe surfing). I’m sure that come summer they’ll add a bit of personality to the place but it’s obvious to me that food comes first at the Sandwich Bar. And the product reflects that. “We take great care. We prepare the chicken cutlets ourselves. We clean them, we pan fry them; it’s not just cooking, it’s the whole process,” said Dennis. The lobster roll was just what I’d hoped for; lightly toasted roll, a hint of mayo, a
dollop of butter, and tons of fresh lobster meat. Lobster ain’t cheap so when I order a lobster roll, it better be good. This was excellent. The absence of extraneous filler was notable and welcome – I don’t want a bunch of junk getting in the way of my lobster. The roll was fresh and just right, the seasoning was light and allowed the lobster to shine through so yeah, I’d order this again. Scrumptious. Pepper Potts and A.J. also seemed to enjoy their plates. “There’s something about the way Dennis prepares this sandwich that makes it really good,” said Pepper. “The rolls are fresh with a terrific texture, the broccoli rabe adds a little kick and the sharp provolone is a perfect contrast to the chicken. The cutlet is pounded thin and properly cooked – this is one of my favorite sandwiches.” Be advised that Dennis doesn’t melt the cheese on the cutlet sandwiches. I like it that way, but if you want it hot with melted cheese, he’ll do that. “The cutlet is divine,” said A.J. “It’s crunchy on the outside and soft on the
inside just the way it should be.” The three littlest superheroes all had hotdogs. You know as well as I do that hot dogs are not haute cuisine, but a bad hotdog can really ruin your day. But as expected Dennis trotted out a nicely cooked, quality dog that the crew devoured. The Captain even ordered a second. That says it all. “This burger is phenomenal,” said U.P “The meat is very good – nice and thick.” You may be sensing a trend by now. We all had a lovely meal and a splendid dining experience. And isn’t that the essence of eating out? It’s about gathering with family and friends over a quality meal and enjoying the moment. And in my mind, the food must be as sparkling as the moment. The Sandwich Bar delivered. One can laugh his loudest when the food elevates the experience. You’re not gonna be laughing loud if you’re eating frozen chicken strips that someone threw in a deep fryer. So go to Sandwich Bar and eat and laugh and eat some more until your taste buds explode with delight.

ADORABLE CREATURE OF THE MONTH
Canada Goose Photographed by Ray Zaleski
CLEARLY word has spread to the bird world that Ocean City is indeed America's Greatest Family Resort. This adorable goose family enjoyed a swim at the Howard Stainton Wildlife Refuge on Bay Avenue in mid-May, right around Mother's Day. Canada Geese are big waterbirds with a long neck, large body, large webbed feet, and wide, flat bill. They have a black head with white cheeks and chinstrap, black neck, tan breast, and brown back. They feed by dabbling in the water or grazing in fields and large lawns. They are often seen in flight moving in pairs or flocks; flocks often assume a V formation. They can be found just about anywhere near lakes, rivers, ponds, or other small or large bodies of water, and in yards, park lawns, and farm fields. - allaboutbirds.org.

>>>>•<<<< OCEAN CITY EMPLOYEES Shannon Oteri interviews a few hard workers around town Val Reyes from Atlantis Inn
How long have you worked here? I have been an owner at The Atlantis Inn since 2011. What made you decide to get into the hospitality management business? Originally, I was studying to be an Industrial Engineer when I went to a Prom held at a hotel. Ever since then, I was always fascinated and I changed my study path from Industrial Engineering to Hotel Management. Did you know June is National Adopt a Cat Month? Ha-ha, no I did not. I am not necessarily a “pet person,” however, in the Philippines, we were raised with “community” pets. If your neighbor had a pet cat, it was basically your pet cat too! What is one thing Ocean City has to offer that you would like to try? I would love to take my kids sailing at the Ocean City Yacht Club. They are primarily in North Jersey and I think they would really enjoy the change of activity. 20 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

from Surfers Supplies
How long have you worked here? I have been a part of the Surfers Supplies team since the early 2000s and I have been a co-owner since 2005. What are some perks that come along with working only a block away from the beach? Well, being a surf shop it is a great location. It's accessible for our customers and it gives us the luxury to check the surf so we can accurately report it to our customers and it's easy to sneak in a surfing break. Which do you prefer, Banana Whip or ice cream? Hmm… that is tough. I guess I am going to go with ice cream. What is your favorite flavor? Well, my son Merrick (age 5) loves chocolate and my daughter Taylor Rae (age 7) loves vanilla, so I guess my favorite is a mix between the two!
from Hula Grill
How long have you worked here? This will be my third summer.
I was four and eight.
Have you ever been to Hawaii? Actually, yes. When
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go. Hmm… I would like to go to Paris one day. Do you have a summer bucket list? No, I used to make them when I was younger, though. If I did, it would be to go to a concert this summer if I have free time. What is the best part about working on the Boardwalk? I love meeting our customers and seeing how far they have traveled to get here. Have you ever practiced Yoga? Yes, I have, but I'm a dancer, so I like to dance! Frozen Yogurt or an Acai Bowl? Frozen Yogurt, for sure. Strawberry.
In the Know with Ocean City Girl Welcome to the start of summer my friends. I hope you're sitting on the beach reading this... the second ever Ocean City Girl column. It's June and I am so excited and proud that Ocean City won Coastal Living's "Best Beach in America" for 2016. Way to go Ocean City and thanks for voting everyone! I've settled into my beach chair, grabbed my mug of coffee and am ready to get started on your questions, curious reader. This month's questions have to do with some history of Ocean City and OC's delicious Restaurant Week. Send me your questions and perhaps you'll make it into next month's Ocean City Girl. Till then, happy beaching!
Dear Ocean City Girl, I am fairly new to living in Ocean City. I am really enjoying everything about the town and was wondering if you knew exactly how Ocean City got its name? Sincerely , New Resident
Dear Ocean City Girl, I'm a serious foodie and heard whispers that I should make plans to be here for Restaurant Week. Can you tell me more about Restaurant Week and when it is? Signed , Hungry
Dear New Resident, Welcome! This city has much to offer and the longer you're here the more you will find to love. Ocean City's history is rich.. in fact, it dates all the way back to the 18th Century – but it was several years later when the town got the name we know today. Originally, the first inhabitant of the island was a whaler named John Peck. In the 1700s he used the land to store his whaling catch. and it soon became known as Peck's Beach. In the mid to late 1800s, there was a camp meeting revival movement going on. Churches were setting up camp areas for their Christian summer retreats. In the fall of 1879, four ministers; Ezra Lake; James Lake; Wesley Lake and William Burrell chose Peck's Beach as the location for their retreat. They were following in the footsteps of another founding church in the movement which had already established their retreat up north named Ocean Grove. These four ministers name the area Ocean City, and thus America's Greatest Family Vacation Resort was born.
Dear Hungry, Thank you for the perfect question for this month. Restaurant Week was started by the Ocean City Restaurant Association (OCRA) as a way for both residents and visitors to become more familiar with the all of the unique and creative eateries this fine city offers. OCRA has more than 50 members that offer a combination of breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner, so no matter what your taste buds like, you'll find something on the island to satisfy. Restaurant Week this year is June 10-16. Participating members offer fixed price menu options during this special week so that you can try something new and different or enjoy your current favorite. It is always a fun time during this week as you get to experience a tasty Ocean City tradition! To plan ahead, visit www. eatinocnj.com. Until Next time - Wishing you all Ocean Waves of Peace, Love & Sunshine

The Interview It's family first for Jody Levchuk, director of operations for Jilly's Boardwalk shops
Jody (right) jammin' on Guitar Hero at Jilly's Arcade, one of his family's businesses on the Boardwalk
J
ODY LEVCHUK wasn’t born yet when his family first opened Jilly’s Arcade – named after his mother, Jill, in 1976 (40 years ago!). But it was his destiny to run the Jilly's empire as its director of operations in an office lined with colorful, plastic ball prizes, blank t-shirts and paperwork. Stroll down the boards and you'll find Jilly’s $1 Store, Jilly’s Ice Cream Factory and Jilly’s French Fry Factory, Jilly's T-Shirt Factory and of course, the 24-hour a day arcade (yes, it's always open in summer). For Jody, having the business named after his mom set the tone; business and family are one in the same, and there is no real line between work and play when your job is to bring fun to the Ocean City Boardwalk 364 days a year. What is a favorite childhood memory? Over the years, the first thing that comes to mind is the time I spent with my grandmother Beverly Kreisberg. She worked here, I worked for her as my first job and I grew up next door to her. What part of the business is your favorite? My favorite part of the business is that I work for myself. I dictate my own responsibilities but it’s the most challenging part too. Really the best part is no one has a better office view than me. I look at the beach and Boardwalk everyday. What talent would you like to have? I love music. I’m very musical in my mind so I guess I’d love to sound as good as I think I sound. What is your favorite thing about where you live? It’s such a great town. I live on an island. I live on the water. It’s a beautifully run town. Our infrastructure is as good as it gets. There’s no crime in this town. I live here and make my living here. Even though in summers we’re busier, from a work perspective, it’s easier. You’re really on cruise control.
Who is a person you admire? My father, Paul. He started from nothing. Nothing was handed to him. He grew up dirt poor. He never went to college but he found a way to better himself and become an extremely charitable, hardworking, giving person. I admire him for everything from being married to my mom for almost 45 years and raising good children to his continuing every day to be a better person and role model for so many people. What would you do with $5 million dollars? It depends on who’s handing it to me, I guess! I was always raised to share. I don’t know exactly what I’d do but it’s very safe to say I wouldn’t hoard it. It depends on what’s going on at the time. What would you do if you could do anything? I always wanted to be a trial attorney. When I realized that 90 percent of it is reading and writing, I realized it wasn’t for me. What traits do you look for in employees? Friends? Loyalty. Whether you’re an employee or friend or family member, you’re part of a circle that I have. In order to be in that circle there’s a tremendous amount of loyalty that you have to have. That’s the first thing I look for. If you have that, it’s hard to ask for many other things. Loyalty breeds trust, it breeds love, fun… a lot of things. What’s your favorite motto? If you don’t love your job, you’re never going to be successful at it. And it’s up to you to decide what success means. Any regrets? I probably would have designed Fry Guy to be about 6 inches taller. That keeps me up at night.

The Kellys lived in Philadelphia where John was a successful businessman and world famous rower. He won three gold medals competing in the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games. In 1931 they built a beautiful beachfront home at 2536 Wesley Avenue. The Kelly children, Margaret, Jack, Grace and Lizanne spent their summers growing up in America’s Greatest Family Resort. There has been a lot written about the Kelly family’s activities in Ocean City during the 25 years between 1931 and 1956, but in 1956 they received world-wide attention. As the year began, the international press went into a frenzy when the engagement of Grace to Prince Rainier III of Monaco was announced. The civil ceremony would be held on April 18, and the church wedding the following day. LIFE magazine took the lead in publicizing what was called “The Wedding of the Century.” Grace, wearing a gown, was on the cover of the April 9, 1956 issue. The magazine, famous for their photojournalism, included 22 pictures of Grace preparing for the wedding. The article reported: “Most of Grace Kelly’s last-minute rush was caused by the fact that M-G-M kept her busy with her two new movies until the day she left. By a fascinating coincidence both films amount to full-blown charades

on the life, past and future, of Miss Grace Kelly. In High Society Grace, who herself grew up in the conservative society of Philadelphia, glides with familiar ease through the even fussier upper crust of Newport, RI. The other film is The Swan, based on Ferenc Molnar’s famous play about a beautiful princess who marries a sleepyeyed prince (Alec Guinness) in a fairy tale kingdom. As Princess Alexandra in the film, Grace got free lessons in the etiquette and accomplishments of royalty. The April 23 issue of LIFE included 11 more pictures and reported on Grace’s trip across the Atlantic Ocean on the S. S. Constitution along with 72 relatives and friends. Brother Jack flew to Monaco because he was training for the Olympic rowing competitions and didn’t want take much time away from his workouts. The April 30 issue of LIFE covered the Wedding of the Century, with 22 more pictures of the two weddings: a civil ceremony on April 18, 1956 and a church wedding the following day in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. The article ended saying: “And so an old-style fairy tale came to its appropriately romantic conclusion, but only after a number of modern day variations and additions had come to pass.” Five months after their wedding Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III arrived in Ocean City to visit her family and friends in America’s Greatest Family Resort.

MATTER OF ART By Cindy Ferraino and Bill Godfrey
There’s something special about living near the beach. The inherent energy of the waves, the spectacular light of the area’s big skies and the magical positioning where land meets ocean. And there’s also something special about the people who live near the beach. Many grew up here, their lives infused with salt air and sandy soil. And many others are drawn here, unable to resist the siren song of this place.
I love meeting people who understand the ocean’s pull. The ones who speak of art and inspiration and of creating their own reality. They’re cool. So let me introduce you to Mitch “Waxbeard” LaFleur, soul-catching photographer and owner, along with his wife Jamie, of Waxbeard Images, LLC. Waxbeard Images, as Mitch describes it is “an ocean-inspired photography and apparel company.” “I am not the traditional photographer who does standard posing and lighting. My photography is artsy with a strong connection to surfing and the easy-going lifestyle that the shore is known for,” Mitch said. The goal of the company as Mitch describes it, is to evoke the feelings and memories of the shore while providing the highest quality apparel, printed locally in South Jersey. The company’s products feature photographs taken by Mitch in and around the Ocean City area, and then transferred to really nice clothing. Mitch uses three words to describe the company and its brand: Surf. Art. Lifestyle. I might add “really cool clothes and eye-catching images.” But that’s just me. “Jamie and I started Waxbeard to reflect our love of the surf. I’m trying to capture the art and lifestyle of the shore,” he said. “Surfing is an art form so combining surfing with photography seemed a natural way to create our art. Every surfer, including myself, has a bar of wax at any given moment and I am always sporting a beard, so it became ‘Waxbeard’.”

Mitch spends days on the beach and Boards, snapping pics, capturing moments. His art begins once he’s got those photos. He uses them to tell a story or evoke a feeling by creating a piece of wall art or transferring them onto something to wear. “Ocean City is where my family came for summer vacations,” Mitch said. “I would spend my days surfing and walking the Boards and that’s probably when I decided I wanted to live close to the beach. I grew up in Buck County, PA but I went to college in North Carolina. I spent a lot of time surfing in college and after college, but I wanted to be closer to family when I was done.” So back Mitch came, but this time he stayed true to his plan and moved close to the beach. He landed a position at Cape Regional Medical Center as an emergency room nurse and spent his free time surfing and taking photos. After a while his attentions fell on a coworker who shared his love of the beach. Fast forward a bit and Mr. Mitch LaFleur became Mr. Mitch and Mrs. Jamie LaFleur, husband and wife and entrepreneurs extraordinaire. “We were feeling a bit unfulfilled in our nursing careers, so we began to assess what was truly important to us and how we could bring the most happiness into our lives,” said Mitch. “One theme stood out: we wanted to live a lifestyle based on our passions of surfing and art. And Waxbeard Images was born.” With Mitch behind the camera getting great shots for the clothing and print art, Jamie keeps busy running the business side. Jamie created and designed the website, got the online store up and running and also manages the social media sites. “She does everything, including keep in me in line,” Mitch said. In addition to their business duties, the pair are doggie parent to two doodles, Oakley and Sadie who act as silent partners and guiding forces. They’re also expecting their first child, a girl, in June. And in addition to the clothing, the pair hope to expand their product line to include gift merchandise and other unique items that reflect their love of the shore. Surfing, creating, parenting – it’s a lot but you may as well do it near the beach, am I right? “It’s a lifestyle. It’s a journey. We’re really enjoying it,” said Mitch.

Pretty in Pink... Get your beach wardrobe update at Pappagallo By Hanna Schweder and Stefanie Godfrey
I
F YOU'RE a true beach fanatic, winter and spring are just a nuisance in the way of the days when you bring sand home in your shoes. This spring in particular it seemed like gray was the new black... like Mother Nature was trying to be chic and trendy with her varying shades of gray clouds. Enter April Scannell and clothing shop Pappagallo, a beacon of color through all this haze. April has made it her mission to bring a smile to her customers even on the rainiest of days. Pappagallo is filled with so many hot pink, bright green and sapphire hued clothing and accessories, it's hard not to be happy when you walk in. Just a look into their Asbury Avenue window is enough to bring out a smile. “We try to pick classic pieces with a preppy, colorful vibe. You could say it’s happy and unique,” said April. “Styles people look for have become all about comfort at the beach. Right now we have a lot of jersey material that’s more casual, but can be dressed up. These pieces are one-of-a-kind and special." No matter what you need, chances are this bright shop carries it. From children’s outfits to shorts and tops, handbags and wallets in designer brands like Lilly Pulitzer and Vera Bradley; brands known for quality and dazzling floral and paisley designs. “We’re consistent with the lines. We stand behind them because they are good-quality pieces. People look for them,” April said. Unless you've been hiding under a sandsculpture, chances are you know Lilly and Vera and the preptastic style

they use. While some rompers, cover-ups and dresses have big, bright pineapple or floral patterns, other items like a quilted leather wallet or smooth canvas clutch take more than a quick glance to notice, but their appeal is just as strong. A closer look will show the detail work like a gold anchor or shell clasp – beachy embellishments perfect for summer. Take a closer look at April and you'll see she's expecting her third child this summer. She's already a busy mom of two boys, ages three and six. "I love spending time with my sons – especially on the beach," said April. Hitting the beach with family has been a long tradition. She used to spend summers here in Ocean City with her family growing up. Spending time on the beach herself, she knows what to stock for her customers. Along with her mom, Carol Jones, they do the all the merchandise buying for the shop. Carol and April have owned Pappagallo since 2001 and their goal has always been to pick pieces that a customer can build their entire summer wardrobe with. And, of course, a good wardrobe needs some bling. Pappagallo carries jewelry from local designer Bella U. There's also jeweled sandals

so your feet can have some fun too. April and Carol's shop attracts moms and daughters of all ages, so there's something for everyone. These days, spreading the word about new merchandise is done in part through social media. Marketing is nothing new to April though. She has a degree in communications from Villanova. In the off-season, April takes trips to New York City to check out the latest trends. Depending on what's hot – it influences the pieces she'll choose for her shop. Apart from Lilly Pulitzer and Vera Bradley... Pappagallo sells Vineyard Vines, Ella Moss, Escapada, Michael Stars, Mudpie, Hatley, Three Dots and other similar brands. “I feel like we’re a ‘gifty,’ special store. It is definitely the place to find something special on your vacation,” April said. “Everyone can find something.”

Fortress Financial
Is it time to retire... or plan for your retirement? Say hello to the trio behind OC's Fortress. Text and Photos by Hanna Schweder
B
ENJAMIN Franklin said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” While it’s good advice, it’s not the motto of Ocean City’s Fortress Financial. Their motto is much older than Benjamin. Psalm 18:2 is emblazoned on one of the front windows of its dark red brick building. According to financial advisor and creator of the business John Shirk, if the Fortress group has a motto, this Psalm, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer,” is it. Benjamin Franklin did make a good point, though, and John, his brother Jeff and Dave Allegretto practice that sentiment in their financial advisor careers. Between the three of them, there are about 75 years worth of experience in finance. Though they came into their careers for different reasons, the three all agree that their jobs involve people first, numbers later. Before opening his own firm in Ocean City in 1992, John gained experience in the field with firms Smith Barney in Philadelphia and Dean Witter in New York. He spent weekends in Ocean City with his wife and quickly realized he didn’t want to leave come Sunday night or Monday morning. “I became obsessed with finding a way to make a living in Ocean City. It’s a great town!” John said. “There’s that Jimmy Buffet escapism that permeates this area.” So he began planning a financial business as unique as the community it would serve. He eventually convinced his brother to leave the Boston area where he was regional vice president for a mutual fund company. “John was looking for a partner and he finally convinced my wife and I to go to Ocean City,” said Jeff. Dave, however, didn't have to go far to join the team. “I was born and raised in Ocean City, so to have an opportunity to have this career in the town I grew up was appealing. I think this is a great place to raise a family,” Dave said. 48 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

The trio built up their client base from the Ocean City office that now expands to 25 states from New Jersey to Hawaii. “Technology allowed it to happen. You can operate a business now in our field from wherever you want,” John said. The dark brick building with detailed white trimming has been on the corner of Asbury and 8th Street for over a hundred years. Its history is fitting for the stability clients are looking for when it comes to their financial futures. Along with John, Jeff and Dave, client relations specialists Debbie Jordan, Marie Johnson and Lisa Clark work in the office. And this office actually looks like a fortress. There is a giant, thick metal bank vault door that remains intact from the building’s bank days. When they aren't working in their "fortress," Dave, John and Jeff can all be found around Ocean City spending time with their families outside of work. Dave and Jeff might be seen surfing while John might be found participating in an Ocean City Tabernacle or Coastal Christian church event. All three serve on multiple boards and organizations for Ocean City. They’ve also all grown families in the community they're serving. “The basis for or our business is our faith. That faith is the glue of our office. The bible verse on the building is where Fortress Financial comes from. It’s what gives us our moral compass and that’s the filter we put everything else through,” John said. That

the only taFFy maDe in ocean city faith is really the biggest piece of everything that takes place here.” They agreed the typical client is generally someone preparing to retire, and the most frequently asked question is, “have I saved enough?” While the answer differs greatly depending on how a client spends, in working one-on-one with John, Jeff or Dave, you know you are getting personalized advice that isn’t taken lightly. Helping people plan for their futures is this trio's passion. “The first time I knew I wanted to work in investments was in economics class in high school,” Jeff said. Dave agreed. “I’ve always had an interest in finance. I was always enamored with investments and Wall Street. I think we all got into the job to be managing investments, managing money,” Dave said. “After all this time, we mostly manage emotions, behavior and expectations. And once in awhile we manage money.” “I like to believe we have a very honest practice. We do put other people’s best interest first,” Jeff added. And while an afternoon of talking about money may not be most people’s preferred activity, with the witty Fortress Financial trio, a quick transition from a moment of serious financial advice to a laugh is typical. “We put the fun in mutual funds,” joked Jeff, eliciting some cringes from his partners. Let's just say no one voted for that to become a new company slogan. In all seriousness, the experience with three advisors so invested in their community and client’s well being is arguably unmatched. “There are great people in this town,” John said. “The magic of living and working in Ocean City has never worn off for me.”

YOGA GINGER It's getting hot in here

Text and photos by Paige Benedetto
S I APPROACHED Yoga Ginger on 7th and Asbury, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was heading in to take a class called “Hot Vinyasa Flow.” I entered the studio I was immediately struck by the room's high temperature. My eyes darted around the bright space as I observed the honey-colored wooden floors, people sitting on their mats stretching, and the chalkboard walls brightly covered in motivational quotes. The smiling, piercing blue-eyed owner and teacher of the studio Suzanne Chew greeted me as if she had known me for a long time. I was instructed to take off my shoes, put my belongings in the back room, and grab a yoga mat. I had my water bottle, towel. I was ready to go with the flow. But I was instantly halted when Suzanne flipped the music on. Instead of the traditional gentle instrumental music, the speakers blared familiar upbeat pop-songs. This was... different and awesome. Suzanne is passionate about the music she picks, and each playlist is designed for a particular class. “I love motivational songs; I love songs that truly hit my heart and my soul. I love to feel the music when I practice yoga. To me I can feel it more," said Suzanne. "My philosophy here, when I teach, is to have all that come out on my student’s mats. I don’t
want them to be stiff or straightforward, so I pick my music according to my class. This is a motivational class which is designed to push you a little bit further.” Suzanne put her long blonde hair in a ponytail and the class began. Her voice is quick, strong, and peaceful all at the same time, as we moved from one pose to the other. She explained exactly what foot to move and where... every step in quick precise detail, so it was easy for me to keep up as long as I was listening. As I began to move my body into the yoga poses, the title of the class clicked in my brain. My body flowed from position to position with ease; there were no abrupt changes. The strength in the room grew as the class, a mix of men and women of all ages, progressed. Chew pushed the class further into more challenging poses; I was moving my body and stretching my limbs in ways I had never exercised them before. Seriously. The room heated up as the class kept moving forward. Suzanne keeps the heat in the room set to 90 degrees, but it typically reaches 100 degrees by the end of class. “I always tell people to honor their bodies, it is not about who can hold a pose the longest or who can withstand the heat, it is about honoring your body.” As the class started to wind down, the heat was everywhere, even in my lungs. We laid on our backs and focused on taking deep breaths.
As we laid, Suzanne walked around the studio with orange essential oil having each student breathe in the fragrance of sweet citrus to clear our lungs as we took a few deep breaths. One of the students in my class that day was Eileen Moran. Eileen has been practicing yoga for four years, and is a devoted student at Yoga Ginger. “I love yoga, and the group, and Suzanne. She really teaches you. My retirement goal is to become a Suzanne groupie,” said Eileen. The name for her studio is personal for Suzanne; it's named after her grandmother Ginger. “(My grandmother) always had this great light about her and everyone loved her,” said Suzanne. Suzanne's yoga philosophy of her students honoring their bodies is the core of her practice and her passion for the ancient art of exercise and meditation. “If people want to hold a pose a little bit longer, or move a little faster, then do it. I don’t want to tell people what their practice should or shouldn’t be; it's their time to move,” she said. That philosophy shined through in Suzanne's class. Students have the peace to do what they want with each pose without feeling pressure to move or keep up with someone else. Leaving the studio I felt energized and fresh, but also completely relaxed from the workout. Suzanne encouraged and facilitated the session with strength yet she was gentle too. My body was pushed to my own stretching limits – and it made me in tune with myself, honoring it as I posed.

Going Global
W
HEN CHOLEHNA Weaver embarks on an 11-day trip to Iceland in July, the memories she's about to make will serve a bigger purpose than just a personal one. Next year’s sixth grade students will get to learn about the Nordic island country from someone who has experienced its volcanoes and glaciers firsthand. Cholehna has been chosen as one of 35 educators in the U.S. and Canada to receive the honor of 2016 Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. The desire to teach her students from her own experiences rather than just the use of textbooks has led Cholehna to network and apply for opportunities such as the Iceland expedition. Bright maps, charts and projects span her classroom letting you know you’re in a social studies room where normally students are seated learning about the world around them. Walking through the door you can sense it’s an environment rife with adventure. And after a few minutes with Cholehna, you can’t help but be as excited about her plans for next year’s geography lessons as she is. “I’ve had really good examples of teachers who went outside the box. My parents also were teachers, so seeing their dedication to what they did, it was like a lifestyle choice for them that transferred to me as well,” Cholehna said. While her upcoming summer expedition on a ship that will circle Iceland is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, this won’t be the first time she’s pulled out a passport in search of knowledge to bring back to the classroom. Last summer, Cholehna spent a month in China with 15 other teachers who visited everything from the Great Wall to the
Terracotta Army. “We went on home and school visits meeting with students and families to go along with the history,” Cholehna said. “It was overwhelming, but ideas were percolating the entire time about how I was going to incorporate this into lessons.” Cholehna explained that one of the most striking things she experienced in China was the continued, fast-paced growth of a country already home to the world’s largest population. “We would travel by bus or bullet train and every three minutes or so, you see a major city being built, another three minutes, there’s another one with all these high-rises. They’re undergoing this huge wave of urbanization,” she said. With that theme in mind, Cholehna planned the focus of the past school year’s lesson. “The question I brought back to the students was: this is the biggest population on the planet. In terms of the future, how are they going to grow sustainably?” Along with asking the big questions, Cholehna has a way with breaking down the big ideas into real-life, local examples the students can understand. She brought the question of economic and environmental sustainability on a global scale down to an Ocean City-sized example. “We took some of China’s current urbanization policies and took that and some of our own research, and created our own cities. The basis of the project was that it was an island city like Ocean City. You have to be self-sustainable if you’re on an island, so they came up with these island civilizations and presented them to the rest of the class,” she said. “They incorporated modern technology that’s just been developed or things that are sort of on the docket like wind farms
on the ocean, that kind of thing.” It was networking from the China trip, she said, that led her to apply for her upcoming opportunity. So this summer, more stamps will dot her passport as she heads on the Iceland expedition. The National Geographic program, she said, is for educators to travel while naturalists guide the expedition allowing people to see through an environmental lens as well as explore the historical lessons of the country. The main ship will circle the country. “It’s a circumnavigation of Iceland. I’m so engrossed with this idea of seeing all different aspects of a coast. As a teacher, I’m thinking about what I will bring back. Of course there’s the awesome history of Vikings and the folklore associated with that region for the students to investigate.” To help prepare the travelers, a National Geographic networking workshop was held in Washington, D.C. in April which gave the fellows a chance to meet with each other and National Geographic photographers as well as learn about some of the technology that will be available to work with on the trip. One of the gadgets they’ll use is Google Cardboard, a viewmaster looking virtual reality tool that lets a person to see Google’s 360-degree street view. When she returns, Cholehna will bring her experience to her students as well as the community of Ocean City. “I love the environment. I go to the beach or I drive over the bridge and see the sunrise; I’m just in awe of the environment. And beyond that, I love the community aspect of Ocean City. I get to teach these amazing students everyday who share that same value.” - Hanna Schweder

C
ATCH A WAVE and you’re sitting on top of the world. In 1963, surfers in Hawaii had just taken on the outer reef of Bonzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. Surf music was in full play, from the Beach Boys’ fun lyrics to the Chantays instrumental sounds. Hollywood released Beach Party starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon and in Ocean City, NJ surfers were lining up to take on the East Coast waves. “There were hundreds of surfers in the water. Hundreds, from 14th Street down to 16th or 17th Street,” said Chuck Allison, a surfer and former OC lifeguard. “You would have 200 people in the water on a Saturday morning.” Surfers here at that time suffered a bit from the reputation the west coast surfers had built for themselves. “California surfers (were) rebels, party animals. We kind of bought in that too. We were guilty,” said Chuck. “We were like rebels without a clue.” Some surfers tried to change this unsavory reputation. “Surfers Supplies used to have a business card that said 'Surfers Supplies' on the front and the back said ‘Compliments of a Surfer.’ So if you saw a little old lady broken down
1904. Greg himself came to visit and brought a new technique to our Atlantic Ocean waves. “Greg came to town and stayed in our family’s house. They came in a 1947 woody. Those guys were hot on the waves and right away, everybody picked up on it. ‘These guys are going right to left… how do you do that?’ The steadfast guys at 14th Street, they weren’t going right to left, they were just coming right off the crest of the wave and going to shore. It took them a while, but they caught on,” said John. About a year after opening Surfer Supplies at Tony’s Marina, George moved his location to the 31st Street building where it stands today. It was a risky move at the time, to open up so far from the main surfing action. “I said, ‘George, if a kid’s got a bicycle and you’ve got the product it’s going to go. It’s not a problem and you know a lot of people drive. I think it’s going to be in a great location.’ It’s a neat building; it kind of looks like the surf shop type thing,” said John, who was working for George at the time fixing surfboards. Back then, there were no leashes on boards, so if they got away from their surfer and hit the jetty, they’d get all dinged up. This fact also made it smart to surf with a buddy. “It was a long swim home,” said John. “I can remember turning around off shore and looking back at the Boardwalk. The people looked an inch high.”
get good… that is an established fact. I had a sleigh bell connected to the shade in my bedroom, a pull down shade. When the wind off shore blew that window shade, it would ring. And when that bell was ringing, it was time to get up and go surfing. That’s how I would know if it was good surf,” said John. “I lived on the third floor of my family home. The bell would ring and echo through and wake me up.” This wasn’t the only way surfers had to be inventive in the mid-20th Century. “The original surf wax was basically candle wax, and candle wax, if you rub it on and then take it out into cold water, gets really slippery,” said Chuck. “So the technology was that guys would wear sneakers when the water was really cold to improve traction.” Chuck, who teaches science at Holy Spirit High School, pointed out all the applied chemistry used in surfing. “Some brilliant guy out of California came up with the idea that you could add stuff to candle wax to make it stickier. There is a whole lot of applied chemistry in the industry of surfing between the neoprene that wetsuits are made of, the resins that the surfboards are made of, the foams, the wax, all this is basically applied chemistry.” Wetsuits back then were a long way off from the ones used today. But if you wanted to surf
on the side of the road with a flat tire you’d stop and fix her tire and hand her one of these cards, create a better image,” said John Loeper. “There was a time – there was a rough time there, but it didn’t last long. People started to realize that it was a healthy sport.”
According to Chuck, the first surf leash came into town from Howie Bosbyshell’s parents who ran a laundromat on Atlantic Avenue down the block from the high school. “Howie went out to California one summer and came back with this bungee cord thing tied to his surfboard and it became one of the very early leashes,” said Chuck. This was in the early 1970s.
in winter, it was pretty much essential gear. “My first wetsuit came from a sporting goods store on 69th Street in Philadelphia,” said John. “It was bulky; it was thick; it was uncomfortable.” OC native and former professional surfer Sandy Ordille had a similar experience. “We used to surf all winter. There weren’t any surf companies making wetsuits. We had to buy them at dive shops; they were hard to move in, very thick,” she said. Sandy first learned how to surf from her brother Pete. “I had grown up in the ocean. My mother and father loved the beach, so I didn’t ever
Supplying the sport The early ‘60s saw the beginning of the surf shops like George Gerlach's Surfers Supplies opening up on the island. George brought in Greg Noll boards (Greg is an American pioneer of big wave surfing and a longboard shaper) in 1963 or 1964, according John, whose family's has been coming to OC since 56 OCEAN CITY MAGAZINE

Chasing the Stoke For John, Chuck and the other OC kids who lived in or spent their summers in OC, life was a beach and surfing was the goal. “When the wind goes off shore the waves
have a fear of the ocean. The first wave I got, I rode it all the way in. I was really happy. They have a word in surfing … they call it “stoked” – and it became my passion immediately,” said Sandy. “As a teenager, it was a good thing. When you’re a surfer, you want to go to bed early and get up and surf at dawn. We used to surf before school and you have to get up really early to do that.” Sandy and John both mention surfing over a famous OC landmark. “On 16th Street there used to be a sunken ship – the Sindia. The top post would stick out of the water and we’d surf to the north of that,” said Sandy. As more and more kids were surfing the waves, adults started to realize there was a need for an organized program.
Contests begin Don Pileggi, then recreation director, along with OCBP lifeguard John Carey, is credited with bringing legitimacy to surfing in Ocean City… an idea way ahead of its time. “I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ We set up an intramural program locally on longboards. We surfed down at the (fishing) pier because the surf was constant. Then we got some guys to pitch in and judge. They had a boys, junior, mens, and girls (division),” said Don. “This was one of the first areas to really have an intramural program for surfing. We gave out medals like the Olympics in summer. Each division had
their own placements; Gold, Silver, Bronze. We had a tiered platform too. Third was on the right, top was first, and second was on the left.” The Ocean City Surfing Association was born in 1963. John Carey came to Don with an idea to hold three major surf contests through the year. “They had contests called the Turkey Trot during Thanksgiving break, the Polar Bear during winter break, and Spring Fling during Easter break,” said Sandy. In summer, there were contests every Tuesday night. It was huge. “The Ocean City Surfing Association was one of the largest amateur surfing associations on the whole East Coast for quite a while. Every Tuesday night there would
be a surfing contest on 14th Street beach and the adults really organized this thing,” said Chuck. “TJ (John Carey) and Ed Corman would start the heats by firing a 12- gauge shotgun into the air so they could make sure we heard it out in the ocean. People would come from Long Beach Island and as far south as Cape May for the Tuesday night contests. They were incredibly, incredibly competitive.” Next issue: The sport of surfing becomes a big business. 57

Sam I Am - Loves to Play!
Peyton - Purrs up a Storm!
Max- A Curious Fellow!
Sam I Am is a six-month-old wire-haired terrier mix. He is a very high energy pooch and loves to interact and play with toys. Sam would do best in a mid-level energy home and requires daily exercise (walks and play). Sam would benefit from social and behavioral training. He seems to be okay with other dogs, but it's unknown how he is with cats.
Peyton is a two or three year old black domestic shorthair. She was brought to the HSOC for a chance to get a home. She’s extremely affectionate and loves belly rubs. Once she warms up she loves to be petted and purrs up a storm. It would take some patience, but Peyton would make a wonderful loyal companion.
Max is a four-year-old hound. He has adapted to his new life here and is hoping to find a forever home. Max is thin and sleek, with brindle fur, a wiggly-nub of a tail, floppy ears, and adorable “sad-guy” eyes! Max is a curious, friendly fellow. He loves to run in the yard and play with his toys! Max is likely house-broken and should be an excellent addition to any household.

Health & Beauty by the Sea KEEP YOUR
SKIN
LOOKING
ITS BEST
Helpful ideas from AtlantiCare experts Top it off — Shade your face from the sun with a visor,
hat or ball cap, and try to stay indoors or in the shade between 10am and 2pm, when skin-damaging rays are strongest.
Rub it in — Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sun-
screen with an SPF of 30 or more to all exposed skin. Sunscreen products labeled broad spectrum must protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, and after swimming or sweaty outdoor activities such as running or beach volleyball.
Keep it moist — Applying a daily facial moisturizer,
preferably one with an SPF of 15 or higher, and moisturizing after you towel off from a shower are great ways to maintain the appearance of your skin.
Feed it well — A diet high in vitamins C and A, magne-
sium, and zinc can provide your skin with important nutrients to stay healthy. In addition, a lifestyle that incorporates regular physical activity increases circulation, which can improve the skin’s appearance.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY & OLD FASHIONED VALUES With That Personal Touch!
It is sometimes hard to believe that there was a time when real estate business in Ocean City was done without computers. In the "old days" people actually made a day of traveling to OC to look for rentals or homes to buy and then enjoy a stroll on the beach or boardwalk before heading home. Today much of our business is done via the internet where tenants and buyers browse through properties in the comfort of their homes and then email or phone our agents to book their rental or schedule a time to come and look for that perfect home at the shore to rent or buy.

Good Karma
Bill Flynn - a do-gooder By Danielle Monzo Photo provided by Bill Flynn
E
IGHT YEARS ago, a Catholic priest named Father Joseph Valiaparambil found himself with eight weeks off from his studies in Rome where he was earning a Ph.D. After writing a letter to the Diocese of Camden inquiring if any parishes in Ocean City needed help during the summer time, Father Joseph came to the island. He told parish members here about an impoverished state in India known as Odisha in need of English speaking men to teach English and computer sciences. While most people in the parishes wondered what else they could do that didn't involve travel to India, a single hand rose in the air. That hand belonged to Bill Flynn, who simply replied, “I’ll do it.” For the next six years, Bill, an Ocean City native and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, found himself teaching English and computer sciences to seminarians at the Shanti Bhavan Seminary in Odisha, India. Odisha is south of Darjeeling, where Mother Teresa chose her name, and Kolkata where she helped the poor and established a home for the dying and destitute. Like Kolkata, Odisha is a very poor state. “I have never seen poor like the poor in Odisha,” Bill said. Bill would know. As a well-traveled man, he has seen people and places throughout the world some people only read about. Places like China, Vietnam, Korea, Italy, Austria and Germany, to name a few. But one has to wonder, why does English need to be taught in Odisha? When Ghandi gained independence for the once British colonized land, the country became what we now know as India. “Each state had to have their own language,” Bill explained. In India, there are 26 states, and 26 languages. Those languages are then broken down into different dialects; a melting pot of blended speech. “India is like the story of the Tower of Babel," Bill said. Speaking English is very important in India. English is the language they use in their court system and in their military, according to Bill. “English is the common thread that goes through the States,” he said. Turns out English is more than a language in India, it's a unifying denominator throughout the country. Bill explained that he taught American-English as opposed to British-English since American-English is preferred in order for India to maintain relations with the United States. Before his travels to India, Bill served a 20-year career in the United States Army
where he spent time in Vietnam and retired as a Colonel. More recently, and quite admirably, he was named the Knight of the Year for the State of New Jersey out of 63,000 Knights. “The Knights of Columbus is a strong Catholic organization of men,” said Bill. The Knights of Columbus includes 1.9 million men from all corners of the world including the United States, Canada, Guam, and South Korea. “They are do-gooders; people doing good in the community,” Bill said. How does one recognize a do-gooder exactly? “A person who recognizes the humanity in other people,” Bill said. He remembers a moment in India where a Christian dug a well to bring fresh water to a village where they persecute Christians. A person like that, Bill says, fits the description. “There’s a good guy," said Bill. "He’s a dogooder.” Bill's friends recognize him as a do-gooder too. Joe Lang has been close buddies with Bill for the past 25 years. “Bill is very articulate and very intelligent. He would do anything for you, anytime. He is tremendous for Ocean City and an outstanding gentleman,” said Joe. “We are very proud of him for (his trip to India).” Nowadays Bill spends most of his time on the island and stays heavily involved with his church. “You know the stereotypical ‘little old church lady?’ Well, now I am a little old church man,” said Bill. Recently, Flynn left OC for a trip with his family to Cape Cod. He and his wife love spending time with their grandchildren. “We went with our grandchildren and the people they live with,” Flynn laughs as he references his own children. It's right here in Ocean City where good karma exists through the endeavors of a true do-gooder. From India to America, Bill says that doing good is, “when you’re welcoming to humanity.” He has proven it does not matter where you are to be able to do good things. After all, the start of something great can come from a the simple act of lifting a helping hand.
