In the case of couples with older issues, it wouldn’t hurt to try a temporary separation. Between September 10 and 23, there might be serious communication issues. It’s hard for you to express your ideas in a coherent manner and tend to argue with everyone. Be diplomatic and listen to what others have to say.

Aquarius

Capricorn

Scorpio October 23 - November 21

You have every chance at finding the best solutions for any potential emotional issues that you’re dealing with and realize if there’s any point to continuing a relationship that you’d recently started. If you feel like there’s too much asked of you professionally and you can’t achieve much, you should spend more time in the company of your loved ones who can help you regain your optimism and motivation.

Most Scorpions tend to be more interested in friends and platonic ties than in romantic stories or emotional complications. Scorpions that are already involved in a longer-lasting connection or married can make the most of this transit. Seriously think about the future of the

Some feel a pretty strong nostalgia for a longlost love. Others are tempted to cheat on their significant other. If you’re one of them, seriously consider if the potential momentary satisfaction is worth the suffering and complications that you’re going to deal with later. Professionally, if you want to make progress in business and have harmonious ties to those around, arm yourself with patience and revise your behavior and values.

Instead of expending your energy pointlessly, make more time for yourself and those you care about.

relationship and come up with what’s best to do moving forward together with their better half. If you want some partnerships or relationships to last and even get better, you should become more involved and more attentive and nice.

Leo July 23 - August 22

It wouldn’t be surprising to run into misunderstandings or even conflicts of principles with your better half. What one of you feels is morally appropriate and right, the other could see as unacceptable. Listen each other out patiently and calmly, without trying to impose your own ideas and beliefs. Arm yourself with patience and try to keep in check your impulses and agitation. Otherwise, you risk ruining some important connections.

You and your better half tend to become more particular about things, more demanding of each other and of your connection. The astrological energy of this term favors clearing things up, harmony in relationships, and finding simple and pragmatic solutions for issues that seemed to be extremely complicated. Health wise, this is a good term for rescheduling a doctor’s appointment or for redoing some blood work if you have older medical issues that seem to reactivate. It wouldn’t hurt to work out more or play a sport. You need the self-discipline.

Monthly Horoscope

Life as a couple could be troubled by changes and uncertainties. Your inconsistent ways don’t help at all with regaining the balance. You tend to be very scattered, pay less attention, and even spend too much on pampering yourself. Draw a clear line between work and your personal life. During this term, you don’t have much of a chance at major professional achievements. It would be better to dedicate more time to family life and taking care of your soul and the ties to people who you feel are close to your heart.

Cancer June 21 - July 22

February 19 - March 20

OCNJMAGAZINE.COM 5

Many Cancerians tend to become persnickety and argumentative. That leads to all sorts of fights in the couple, particularly between September 15 and 18. You need to restore your mental energy. You should open up and seek help from those who can offer you emotional support. Don’t try to push things professionally! There are too many retrograde planets for you to get anything moving.

It would be wisest to make the most of the retrograde motions of this term to clear up how you feel about some people. Decide what you want to do for the long run in your love life in general or in your life as a couple if you’re married.

November 22 - December 21

You tend to be always argumentative with your better half, always be on the opposite side, regardless of the topic you’re talking about. You each support your own views and it’s hard to reach an accord. Career wise, you tend to expect more from a joint project, from some collaborators or when it comes to the benefits you can gain through collaborations and associations. Even if there are misunderstandings with others, leave open the channels of communication and try to be open and honest.

Virgo August 23 - September 22

Libra September 23 - October 22

Pisces

Steer clear of significant decisions in your love life. It would be wise to make time for thinking things through, reanalyzing and re-evaluating your emotional needs and taking a careful look at your emotional past. Financially, you might deal with misunderstandings and confusions about money, some joint investments or income through work. -by Eastrolog.com. For entertainment purposes only.

You can expect to be more attractive to potential partners but at the same time, you’re more indecisive about relationships. Don’t rush into making amorous decisions. Professionally, some Taureans feel the need for a reevaluation based on the income they’re earning at work. You need a lot of patience in your professional life. Some projects may be moving forward slower than expected and may need more physical and mental effort from you. As a result, it’s important to dose your energy right and reorganize yourself so that you can become more efficient.

Conversations, friendships, and flirting get started with more ease than usual. But many single Virgoans don’t have much time for romantic frolicking because they’d rather focus on their professional pursuits. It would be best to avoid as much as you can making important decisions in your love life and professional life. If you’re patient and allow things to happen, it’s very likely all sorts of interesting information will come up and help you make the best decisions sometime in November.

From paddling out on a surfboard for the first time to devouring a waffle with homemade Mounds ice cream at Johnny B Goode, to a friend and I challenging my teenage sons and friends to Spikeball and watching the fireballs from the Perseid meteor shower streak the sky, these little bright experiences add up to a constellation of fun. Think of the bright spots of your summer. You can name that constellation anything you want, btw, and if yours isn’t quite formed with enough experiences, no worries… we’ve got tons of ways to fill up these last days of summer and glorious crisp days of early fall.

6 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER

Regardless of how you spent your days, as summer winds down and pulls up a blanket for its long nap, it’s time for recap. Who doesn’t love a good recap? Whenever I start to reflect on the impact and activity of summer 2022, I’m always amazed at how many cool things we’ve done, delish things we’ve eaten, games we’ve played, and so on.

CONSTELLATION OF FUN

2022 How do you measure a summer? Is it in the number of concerts you rocked? The amount of times you put your toes in the Atlantic? Maybe it’s how many slices of Manco pizza you ate with your bros, stood up on a surfboard, browsed the records at Surf Mall or rode across the bridges of Cape May County.

Start on page 16 with our IYKYK column. Megan Antosy gives you the scoop on events happening on and around the island, plus the business changes – who’s in, who’s out. Once you have your calendar filled, flip to page 56 and explore our September/October book selections for your next beach read. This month, our Famished Foodie strolled into La Autentica on Asbury Avenue – a small but mighty restaurant and shop serving up exactly what their name implies – authentic northern Mexican cuisine. It’s cooked up by Yolanda and her mother-in-law daily. Read about them on page 10. Whether its experiencing a new restaurant's dishes, trying a new game or sport, or digging into a dessert that’s been on your food bucket list, do it. And let’s recap it on the beach.

Shore Eats In the Kitchen

With six owners throughout the past 130 years, the Mahoney Family was the last to buy the tavern (circa 2000), and the rest is history. Today, the Anchorage features a large menu ranging from cocktails, seafood, burgers, and pastas to kid-friendly options as well. Simply put; there is little-to-no-room for disappointment, and Donald has made sure of this.“Igrew up in Linwood, New Jersey, but was introduced to the world of cooking at around 12 years old,” said Donald. “My first job was at Daniel’s Restaurant in Somers Point, and I worked there until I was about 18. Fortunately, I always knew this was what I wanted to do professionally. So, when I completed my degree at The Culinary Institute of America, I knew I wanted to bring what I had learned back to the JerseyMovingShore.”toHawaii for a little, and returning to Somers Point, Donald’s cooking is inspired by his early years, education, and influence from his most favorite Hawaiian dishes. As each item on the menu is unique, Donald takes pride in specific recipes that not only represent his talents, but are highly popular with hisThepatrons.Hawaiian grouper is a crowd pleaser, mainly because of the variety of flavor. The grouper is first baked with a traditional teriyaki sauce from a Japanese restaurant in Hawaii. Following the bake, the Anchorage’s famous crab dip is spread on top, and the fish is placed in the oven one last time. Served with spring greens and wasabi sauce, this dish is one of the establishment’s biggest sellers. Seafood is a prominent part of the menu, and the buffalo crab cakes are always a hit.

I AM LUCKY to own this business, and I know it every day. It is not just a restaurant, but a piece of history,” said Donald Mahoney CEO, chef, and owner of Somers Point’s famous Anchorage Tavern. “This gig never gets old.” Standing two stories tall at 823 Bay Avenue, the Tavern is known as Somers Point’s longest standing and consistently operated business. The establishment itself dates back to 1874, where it functioned as a hotel, transitioned to a bar, and finally developed into the successful restaurant many know and love today.

More of an appetizer person? The Anchorage’s mozzarella sticks are a local legend thanks to their light and crispy batter. They are over a quarter pound of cheese and are served with a side of marinara. Perfect to share… or not.

“Almost our entire staff have been employees for over 20 years,” said Donald. “They seem to have a real connection with this place. A big part of how we find more success each and every year is accredited to our efforts to never cut corners, and to always work at full speed to be the best we can for our patrons.”

And special it is. The Anchorage is not only a historic landmark, but also a beloved hangout for locals and visitors alike for years and years. The welcoming vibe you feel at the Anchorage is not an accident.

Ultimately, having options for all diners to love and enjoy is one of Donald’s main goals.

“Our mission is to bring people a great product, at a reasonable price, and make sure they come back again,” said Donald. “We treat our customers well and will do whatever it takes to make their experience nothing less than amazing. The atmosphere we aim to create is relaxed, casual, and comfortable. This place is like taking a trip down memory lane, and we hope that in itself makes the Anchorage special.”

Starting with the Anchorage’s homemade crab cakes, they are rolled in flour, placed in beer batter, fried until golden brown, and baked to doneness. Once out of the oven, the seafood is tossed in the Tavern’s original wing sauce, and positioned on top of a fried tomato. For finishing touches, gorgonzola cheese is drizzled on top for a pop of flavor.Thegorgonzola flounder is another specialty, as well as a favorite of famous Food Network chef Guy Fieri. The plate consists of flounder pinwheels stuffed with crab, broiled, placed onto of a fried tomato, and garnished with gorgonzola cheese.

Endo and I decided to order “Grandma’s Empanadas,” topped with tomato and avocado, and served with rice and refried beans. We chose one of each variety; chicken, steak and pumpkin flower. Endo chose the chicken tacos which came with four, yes, four soft corn tacos. Available meats for the tacos include steak, al pastor (pork), lengua (tongue), or barbacoa, which Jayden told us is lamb. It’s nice to have the opportunity to ask questions and become more familiar with your cuisine.

“There’s a new place in town and a friend said it was good,” said Endo. “I stopped by there today. It’s a little spot on Asbury. The people were nice and I hear the food is great. It’s called ‘La Autentica,’ let’s go.” So off we went in search of a new dining experience, toward the historic Downtown, where we discovered La Autentica Mexican Grill at 1018 Asbury Avenue. It’s part grocery store, part restaurant. It’s quite modest on the outside and I almost passed it. But I’m glad I gave this place a try because inside I found some wonderful Mexican cuisine and a nice family serving it.

“This place is unassuming as you walk by,” said Endo. “I’m glad we came in, it’s delicious.”Awoman near us said “get the ice cream dish.” So we did. The ice cream nachos have two scoops of vanilla atop cinnamon nachos drizzled (yes!) with a caramel sauce resulting in a warm but cold, crispy yet creamy dessert.

Endo Girl and I sauntered in and dropped ourselves at a table near the front door. Arturo and Yolanda’s son Jayden was our server and soon dropped an appetizer basket of warm chips drizzled with a delicious sauce that we polished off before they had a chance to cool. Endo Girl and I popped a couple Jarritos, which are cold, fruit-flavored carbonated drinks from Mexico. I prefer the mango but Endo sipped on a guava as we perused a menu filled with tacos, tortas, enchiladas, nachos and more. These are authentic dishes made with original family recipes. Jayden was truly helpful when it came to our many questions about the menu.

“I don’t cook,” said Arturo. “I don’t have it. The kids asked me to make tacos once so I did, but they’re not like Yolanda’s.”

“We use a combination of recipes from northern Mexico including my mom’s and my wife’s. People love the empanadas,” said Arturo. “I’m from McAllen, Texas and my wife is from Renosa. They’re right across from each other and that’s how we met.

Grandma’s empanadas were crispy, chewy and neatly stuffed. They were topped with tomato and avocado and drizzled with yet another delicious sauce. Served with refried beans and yellow rice prepared by Yolanda. The tacos were, like the appetizer chips, drizzled with a sauce and topped with ripe avocado. Endo and I traded plates once or twice and our conversation flowed, made easier because of the good food.

Summer camps are a fresh memory, the stores are stocked with back-to-school gear, and the smell of fall lingers on the horizon. The U.S. Life-Saving Service Heritage Association will be holding their annual conference October 20, 21, 22, 2022 in Ocean City. The meeting will end with a dinner at the historic Flanders Hotel.

“Today, the Life-Saving Station stands as a living history museum. Visitors can walk through the two-story building as the surf men did some 130 years ago. The kitchen, dining room, and boat house are all filled with period pieces. History is ready to come alive at Lifesaving Station 30.”

Above: Station 30 is located on the corner of 4th Street and Atlantic Avenue.

BY FRED MILLER

HE following is from the U.S. Life-Saving Station 30 brochure: “Standing at the corner of 4th and Atlantic is U. S. Life-Saving Station 30, one of only four in New Jersey. In 1886, the building stood next to the sandy shore at the turn of the inlet. Surf men protecting sailors, ships, and any others from the ravaging waves lived in the station while off duty from their demanding job. Back then there was an average of three shipwrecks a month. The job of the surf men was so demanding that the motto of the US Lifesaving Service was, ‘You have to go out; you don’t have to come back; so others may live.’

32 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022 Local Ocean MEET THE MAKER /// LE SURF BUNGALOW By Ava Saric Caitlin Peck To see more of Caitlin’s creative talent, take a look at: Instagram: @thelittlebungalow @lesurfbungalow Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/LeSurfBungalow

Inspiration landed right in Caitlin’s lap at a very young age.

Ocean City seemed like the perfect place to do so.” Though she grew up going to LBI, Caitlin spent numerous summers in Ocean City and knew the area very well. After closing The Powder Room, she found work at the 7th Street Surf Shop, designing and printing her very own apparel in the upstairs workshop, and her husband continued his Ocean City Beach Patrol lifeguarding career.

“After having my first son Cooper and being a mom for the first time, I began to lose my own sense of identity. Everything is so unknown, and all you care about is doing everything right for your child, but in the midst of it all, you forget to give yourself time and grace,” said Caitlin. “All my life I have struggled with anxiety, saying yes too often, and spreading myself a little too thin. This is why I started my Instagram page @thelittlebungalow. It is a mixture of DIY projects, art and crafts, and my family. The small outlet not only kept me sane, but also allowed me to take time for myself. It brought me back to me.”

Caitlin also writes a craft column inspired by her @thelittlebungalow page for Ocean City Magazine each month. See this month’s on page 28. Alongside of her personal page, Caitlin continues to produce apparel for 7th Street Surf Shop and for Le Surf Bungalow. Seventh Street owner Larry Friedel remains one of her biggest supporters when it comes to following her dreams. You can find Le Surf Bungalow apparel at 7th Street.

“Deciding to raise our children in this town was one of the best decisions we have ever made,” said Caitlin. “Everyone is always looking out for one another here, and it really is such an amazing community.”

Creativity being instinctual, Caitlin always followed the path of design. Throughout high school, art classes were her main source of enjoyment. So much so, that she decided to further her education at Rowan University, studying fashion design and marketing.

“There are moments when I create something where the giddiness and excitement is such a feeling; it makes me want to pass that onto others,” said Caitlin. Working to be the best mother, wife, and entrepreneur; Caitlin remains busier than ever, but has never been more at peace with what her life has grown into.“Ilove my job and the people I work with so much. I make stuff and create for me, and I really have reached that point in my life where I am genuinely content,” said Caitlin. “I will always want to grow the brand, but at the end of the day I just want my family to be happy and healthy.”

“I’ve really taken a liking to work of specific surf artists,” said Caitlin. “Julie Goldstein, who creates beautiful work of women on the water, and Andy Davis, whose style is more cartoonish. The community itself is extremely inspiring.”

For Caitlin, the most challenging, yet rewarding transition of them all was becoming a mother.

Caitlin’s designs range from positive logos to sketches of people in nature or the water, where her effort is to just spread a little more happiness in the world.Caitlin currently resides in Ocean City, where she’s developing her brand while being a mom to two young boys and working at 7th Street Surf Shop. Working at 7th Street has allowed Caitlin’s workshop and creativity to expand, but there were steps in her career that she will always accredit her success to starting when she was a kid.

“Learning from the owner of the store, I would watch as each piece of clothing was cut and sewed. Overtime, I was able to start making clothes of my own,” said Caitlin. “When I heard that there were plans to close the business, my husband Calvin and I immediately jumped to take over. We owned The Powder Room for about four to five years. Unfortunately, the economy left us paying to simply keep the store afloat, and it was no longer profitable. I knew it was time to move on and

In addition to the people in her family who shaped her love for art, Caitlin was always in awe of other artists and the professional field.

Although there was incentive for Caitlin and Calvin to create a new home in Ocean City, the real influence came when thinking of the life they wanted to give their sons, Cooper and Waverly.

Le Surf Bungalow is intended to inspire people, connecting them to the sea and surfing, but also to make them smile.

“Each and every stop throughout my journey has led me to this point in life,” said Caitlin Peck, Le Surf Bungalow’s founder and graphic designer. “I can’t help but believe it was all perfectly meant to be.”

“Although I always had a love for artistry, being around them was encouraging and eye-opening.”

The brand itself encompasses the simple, serene, and joyful love of the beach. With each crewneck, t-shirt, and tank embodying the carefree and simple moments of life.

“A lot of my interest in art came from my grandfather and father. Woodworking and making anything by hand were always passions of theirs. My grandfather built his house from the ground up and was constantly making art in his workshop, whereas my father specialized in carving and 3-D designs,” said Caitlin.

Following her years of schooling, Caitlin began to transition into the retail side of design, where she worked at a small skate, surf, and snow shop in Haddonfield called The Powder Room.

Delivering proper care relates to not only the initial preparation, but the assistance following admittance. Fortunately, the organization implements several services that range from standard assisted living to intense healthcare.“Thevariety in what we offer is valuable, because there is a spot for everyone,” said Jim. “We have our full-service community where help is provided where they see best. A lot of the community is extremely independent and live a very normal life. They have cars and come and go as they please. Clearly this program is not for everyone, but it is good to give freedom to those who can manage it.”As specific individuals require more attention, services can intensify to ensure proper support.

“Assisted living plus pertains to a higher level of care, where individuals are placed in smaller areas to avoid physical strain,” said Jim. “Within this we offer memory care, working with those who struggle with any level of memory loss. As for general health care, we provide post-

“As one progresses in their life, needs may shift. This is why we find it so important to have support on both ends of the spectrum. To ensure we are well suited to provide, we work as a team to customize a program for each member,” said Jim. “Prior to admittance, our nurse and residential living director will administer assessments to best estimate the proper environment. With this, the interdisciplinary team, along with our chefs will collaborate to understand and tend to the different requirements. It takes a village, but it’s how we make sure we do things right.”

For The Shores, the “one-way-fits-all” approach does not exist, rather each member of the community has their own personalized plan based on their wellness.

“We have always been, and continue to be extremely focused on compassion, serving the community, and helping others live an abundant life through their biblical roots,” said Jim Zauner, The Shores executive director.

The safe and caring reputation The Shores has upheld plays a large part in why new members join the community, and current ones stay. In addition, the connection to Ocean City helps the community feel a little more at home.

1. Squat - 15 reps. As babies, we basically squat perfectly before we even learn to stand or walk—and as adults, we have to rediscover how to squat properly… and it’s tough. Stand with feet a little wider than hipwidth apart. Drive your hips back, bending at the knees and ankles and press your knees outward (don’t let them cave!). Sit into a squat position while keeping your heels and toes on the ground, chest up and shoulders back. Strive to eventually reach a 90-degree angle. Stand back up. Repeat.

3. Pushup to Plank Shoulder Taps - 10 reps. Begin in a plank position with hands directly under your shoulders and feet hip-width apart. Keep your core tight as you gently lower your chest toward the ground. Push back up to lengthen arms into a plank. Lift your right hand to tap your left shoulder at the top. Repeat, alternating arms.

4. Scap Retractions - 20 reps. Lying face down, extend your arms in front and lift all four extremities off the floor. From here draw your elbows to your rib cage and pinch your shoulder blades back down together. Hold for a few seconds and repeat.

• World’s Greatest Stretch – a stretch using plank, lunge, and twist

5. Bicycles - 30 reps. Lie flat on your back with knees bent with your hands behind your head. Raise your knees to roughly a 90-degree angle. Move your legs through a pedaling motion – as you bring your left knee toward your check, bring your right elbow toward that knee while straightening the other leg. Alternate to twist to the other side. Repeat.

Get Your Ghost On at a Local Haunt By Danielle Davies

OCNJMAGAZINE.COM 47

48 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

Fast forward to 2022, and costume wearers are more likely to be concerned with candy gathering and pumpkin carving than frightful phantoms and shadowy spirits. And though we’re a lot less superstitious than our predecessors, it’s hard to deny the preternatural chill that descends upon the air on a dark Halloween night. After all, maybe our ancestors had a point.

With the spookiest night of the year right around the corner, it seems only fair to regale our readers with local ghost stories. After all, Halloween itself began as a set of rituals to ward off those eternal spirits. According to History.com, “the tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.”

“We don’t deal with as much skepticism anymore, not since the shows,” says Director of South Jersey Ghost Research Dave Juliano, referring to “Ghost Hunters” and related television shows. “It’s not like it was when I was growing up.”

A UTUMN means lots of things to lots of people – from colorful leaves to football games to the re-emergence of cozy sweaters and apple pie –but for many of us, it means one thing only: Halloween.

“If you walk into The Flanders, there’s a painting of a girl in a white dress with red hair. It’s based on eyewitness accounts of Emily,” says Dave. “Stories are that she’s waiting for a fiancé that never came back. But we got the impression of a little girl by the entrance to the back tunnel in the basement that drowned, and we think they may be connected.”

“Eileen Wright used to stay at The Macomber with her husband. When her husband died, she continued to stay through the ‘70s and ‘80s, always in Room 10,” says Craig. “She’s still coming to the place she loved. People want the sensational, scary side of hauntings, but Eileen Wright is benevolent.”RegardingCape May itself, it’s full of tourists – both the living and the dead.

“I feel Cape May is a paranormal hot spot in the United States. There are many, but Cape May definitely has a prevalence of hauntings,” says professional medium Craig McManus. “There is a concentration of experiences, of ghost hauntings, that people have had. Cape May, for some reason, energetically perhaps, seems to draw in both the living and the dead.”Inaddition to his full-time work as a medium, Craig works in partnership with the Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture) to provide a variety of haunted tours and explorations in Cape May, including – but not limited to – Ghosts of Cape May Trolley Tour, Séances at The Physick Estate, and Ghosts of the Lighthouse Trolley Tour. And as author of five books within “The Ghosts of Cape May” series, he’s an expert on the subject.

“It’s like surveillance,” says Dave, a former police officer. “We use trigger props, stuff the spirits can come up and interact with. It’s a lot of waiting to see what happens. We’re recording and asking questions too but it’s more of just sitting in the dark.” Flanders Hotel is just one stop on the Ghost Tour of Ocean City, based on the book, “Ghost Stories of Ocean City” by Tim Reeser, and while it may be the most famous haunted location in Ocean City, it’s far from the only one locally. In fact, Cape May is considered one of the most haunted towns in New Jersey.

Dave, a professional lecturer and paranormal researcher as well as the owner of The GhostHunter Store, has spent over 20 years investigating hauntings at both private residences as well as historically significant venues like The David Stewart Farm in Gettysburg, The Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia, and our very own historic Flanders Hotel, which is, according to legend, home to a ghost named Emily.

OCNJMAGAZINE.COM 49

Among the haunted locations McManus has explored is The Hotel Macomber, a particularly active local haunt.

And while both Craig and Dave have confirmed our famous local ghosts are anything but scary, they certainly add to the thrills of Halloween season. After all, what better time for a ghost story?

“I’m interested in why a spirit is haunting, what happened in his or her life that this person has stayed behind,” says Craig. “With Cape May, I think maybe because it’s one of the oldest seaside resorts, that people like to stay there. It has great energy and that energy seems to entice people after they’ve gone.”

McManus believes that spirits linger in a place for any of four reasons: material attachment, emotional attachment, life cut short, or unfinished business. In the case of Eileen Wright, he’s got a theory.

Dave and his team spend hours at each investigation, utilizing technology that monitors environmental factors such as electromagnetic fields as well as audio recordings.

Emily at The Flanders

“A woman haunts Room 10 at The Macomber and she has for many years,” says Craig. “We think it is a woman named Eileen Wright from Reading, Pennsylvania. People often smell perfume and hear doors knocking in the room.”

The family room was once a “breezeway” when the home was built. The vaulted ceiling ties nicely into the pool room as both rooms are attached. Liza Nicole Interiors suggested a dark gray on the ceiling to mimic the slate tile floor used in the pool room.

With modern buildings and residences becoming more common than not, historic homes and vintage architecture is now just sprinkled throughout the island of Ocean City. Fortunately for those who find value in the preserving the uniqueness of old homes, there are still some hidden gems that have maintained their traditional style, 417 Waverly Boulevard being one of them. 417 and 418 Waverly Boulevard in Ocean City were identically built in 1940 for two brothers and their families from Philadelphia. Following their ownership of more than 75 years, where love and laughter filled the Cape Cod style home, the residences caught the eye of one of Ocean City’s custom home builders, Mike Buck of Buck Custom Homes. Circa 2017, Mike decided to purchase both units with the intention of tearing down and entirely rebuilding the land. For 418 Waverly, construction began almost immediately, but Mike could not bring himself to move forward with the home next door.“Ihad grown up around the corner from 417 Waverly and always found it charming, although it had some peculiarities. In truth, I did not see the inside until after I had owned it,” said Mike. “The previous owner had called me to ask if I’d be interested in purchasing. I agreed to his asking price and that was

“We initially owned a home on the south end of Ocean City,” said Erica, “but as our kids grew, we were really looking to expand. Quickly, we fell in love with the Gardens and began our search. If I am being honest, when my husband and I first looked at 417 Waverly, I wrote it off almost immediately, because there was too much upkeep and work to be done. After our offer on another home fell through and my husband’s love for 417 grew, we decided to buy the long-lived, established estate.”

In similar fashion to Mike, Erica and Dave set out to fully reconstruct the property and bring a more modern layout to the area. But like Mike, there was something holding them back. Although it was evident renovation was necessary, they set out to maintain the 1940’s feel, unable to tear down its significant and enchantingUltimately, presence.theyknew of only one person who could preserve this aura while bringing forth cutting-edge designs: Mike Buck. 2022 that. After I took possession, it seemed too nice inside to immediately tear down and rebuild, so I kept it.”

After several years of renting, Mike decided to put the place on the market. Midway through 2020, during the pandemic, Erica and Dave Deuschle, realtors on the Main Line (the western suburbs of Philadelphia), decided to purchase 417 Waverly.

“(I was) aware of Mike’s well-known reputation as a builder on the island. I reached out to him to take on the project of our new home,” said Erica. “In minutes he responded, ‘When can we meet?’ and the rest is history. From the exterior renovations of roofing, siding, yellow cedar, trim, landscape, hardscaping, lighting, and driveway construction, as well as interior advancements, Mike worked to build our perfect family home.”

Pools and Spa Inc. built a pool in the backyard to bring more life to the outside of the house. Additionally, the Deuschles incorporated a pool room with the help of interior decorator Liza Nicole, who continued to revamp the original layout of the residence.

“In the end, Erica entrusted in us the hopes of creating an oasis for her and her family to use and enjoy for years to come,” said Mike. “I hope we got it right.”

“We spend a good amount of our summer in Ocean City, thanks to our ability to work remotely, and there is something about this place that makes my family and I really want to be here,” said Erica. “It’s our anchor.”

Pool Room

This room was once the original garage to the home that had an attic. Dave and Erica removed the old ceiling, giving them a much more spacious feel with a new vaulted ceiling. Liza Nicole Interiors helped bring their vision to life for this multi-functional space.

In a sense, there is some magic surrounding 417 Waverly Boulevard as it was too special for both Mike Buck and the Deuschles to knock down. With no plans to sell, the home will continue to be filled with shared memories and summer fun.

Fortunately, 14 years of experience in real estate developed Erica’s passion for design, which is evident in the coastal, yet classic décor of the home itself.

With that in mind, Beth started bringing her idea to life. She reached out to Patricia Gillian, chairwoman of the Night in Venice Pageant Committee, to see if the nonprofit would be interested in donating a cabinet to showcase OCHSPatriciaalumni.spoketo her fellow committee members, and a four-shelf, glass, lighted cabinet was gifted to theNextcause.up was finding the four alumni to feature, with a shelf dedicated to each person’s photos, memorabilia, artifacts, and story.

Whether due to busy schedules or modesty, finding willing participants was not an easy task. But Beth got the job done.

The response, overall, has been “overwhelmingly positive,” according to Beth. “I’m just blown away by the whole thing. I can’t believe the amazing response,” Beth said.

A CHANGE OF SCENERY

THE NEWEST DISPLAY AND LOOKING FORWARD

“It took the wind out of our sails,” Beth admitted. No one was featured that second year, but there was still an exciting development for the All-Star display.“Wewere revamping the museum. Everything old was new again,” Beth said with a laugh.

The bottom shelf was dedicated to the OCHS Class of ’57, partly to thank the group for donating a large red cabinet to OCHM to house its collection of OCHS yearbooks, dating from the 1920s to today. The individuals included from the Class of ’57 were Judge Anthony Gibson, teacher and coach Charles Bowman Sr. and Professor Michael Varano. Once on display, the All-Stars exhibit was so popular that the Night in Venice Pageant Committee donated a second cabinet, and Bowman expanded the 2018-2019 display to include: Jay A. Gillian ’83, four-term Ocean City mayor and president of Wonderland Pier; Dr. Matthew Jamison ’84, former OCHS principal and 2018 New Jersey Principal of the Year; and Richard Philippe Coe ’57, educator and administrator of nuclear engineering. Again, the bottom shelf was dedicated to a group, this time from the Class of 1984, including longtime Ocean City police officer and current minister Timothy Bromhead, retired Ocean City Fire Department Deputy Chief William Bowman and ophthalmologist Dr. Eric Dunn.

The first year featured: Marian A. Talese ’53, an artist and piano teacher; Patricia Bowman ’86, a model, singer, actress, writer, Emmy-nominated producer, former Miss New Jersey and a Sunshine Foundation Humanitarian of the Year; and Patricia DeFelice ’12, a silver medalist in the North Atlantic Regional Figure Skating Championships.

UST a few short years ago, the Ocean City Historical Museum had a small exhibit within its walls dedicated to the town’s high school. It featured a handful of artifacts and a bit of written history, and that was that – until Beth Bowman came along, that is. It was in 2018 that Beth, who started volunteering at the museum in 2016 and joined the Board of Trustees shortly thereafter, decided it was time to shine a spotlight on Ocean City High School history. And thus, the Ocean City High School Alumni All-Stars was born.

“What better way to promote one of the brightest jewels in Ocean City’s crown, our awardwinning high school,” Beth said. When she reached out to Mayor Jay Gillian, he agreed, and the cabinets moved to just outside the library – another facet of the Community Center.

“It’s what you have done to bring positive recognition to the high school or the Ocean City community,” Beth said. This can be through jobs or charity work, hobbies, or special interests. The possibilities are virtually endless.

“We’re just trying to tell Ocean City’s history through the alumni,” Beth said, “and all the great things they have done.” To learn more, visit the Ocean City High School Alumni All Stars Facebook page. To nominate an alumnus or for questions, email OCHSallstars@gmail.com.

After the success of the first year, Beth planned to feature eight total OCHS alumni in 2020 – four women in one cabinet and four men in the other. Then, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

THE FIRST DISPLAY

“I feel people are the true treasures in our life, and everyone has a story. Everyone,” Beth said. “It’s always fascinating to me when you start talking to people and the stories you get out of them.”

“I got this idea,” Beth said. “Wouldn’t it be fun to tell the history of Ocean City High School through the kids who went to school there and then went out into the world?”

The 2022-2023 cabinets feature eight more alumni: Jennifer Crist Bowman ’87, entrepreneur and humanitarian; Jackie Adams ’10, assistant supervisor of the Ocean City Recreation Department; Robin Williams Vitale ’94, of the American Heart Association; Valerie Grimes Savage ’65, educator, author and humanitarian; Michael J. Hartman ’98, Ocean City Theatre Company founder and artistic director, and chief of staff to Pennsylvania State Sen. Carolyn T. Comitta; Donald Michael Pileggi Sr. ’48, former Ocean City Recreation director; Antwan McClellan ’93, New Jersey State Assemblyman; and Joseph T. Kennedy ’55, who developed curriculum for nuclear and explosive devices training in conjunction with United States Department of Energy and Department of Justice personnel.Withthis year’s cabinets installed, Beth is already eyeing up her next class of All-Stars. There are two simple requirements for nominations. One, the person must be, naturally, a graduate of OCHS. And two?

THE SECOND GROUP OF GRADUATES

The 2020 OCHM renovations were wonderful for the museum, but they did limit space inside the facility. Because of this, Beth tried to figure out if there was a better spot for the two All-Stars cabinets. OCHM is located inside the Ocean City Community Center, and Beth thought moving the cabinets to the center’s atrium (“prime real estate,” she called it) would be perfect.

As life settled down later in 2020, Beth had to rekindle her momentum. Once again, she was searching for alumni to feature. The 2021-2022 year ended up featuring four women in the first cabinet – Ocean City Aquatics & Fitness Center Supervisor Lisa Rumer ’83, speech-language pathologist Jill Mullen ’96, Ocean City Police Officer Jennifer Elias ’93 and prosecutor and educator Allison Eiselen ’05 – and four men in the second cabinet – Ocean City Schools Creative Director/CEO Steven Trauger ’00, Ocean City Deputy Fire Chief Charles W. Bowman Jr. ’81, educator and businessman Thomas R. Oves Jr. ’81 and artist and carver George Loder Sr. ’55. Including memorabilia in the displays is key, according to Beth. “People like artifacts,” she said. “It can be anything that tells your story. It could be things

from high school or things from what you’re doing now. Everybody has that item that’s important to them.”Forinstance, there are awards and trophies, plaques and citations. Patricia Bowman’s shelf featured one of her pageant crowns. Marian Talese’s showcase included the artwork she gifted to former First Lady Laura Bush, as well as some of her artist pencils and brushes. Of course, it’s not just about the memorabilia. The alumni stories are naturally a big part of the exhibits, and those are located outside of the cabinets, where viewers can read about the graduates’ accolades, life since high school and personal anecdotes and details.
