I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for OC

HE SEAGULL’S call in August sounds like an alarm. Your eyes flick back and forth, up and down, searching for the scavenger who is sure to grab that bubbly, hot, ooey, gooey slice of Manco and Manco right out of your hand if given the opportunity. But in April, that same seagull call inspires a smile bigger than the Gillian’s Wonder Wheel and taller than the Double Shot at Playland, because it’s the call of summer. It’s the call of warm nights with friends, laughter and a feeling that life can’t get any better. For those of us who have salt water running through our veins, Ocean City is where we want to be and it is all we dream about for those long, long winter months. Our island is eight miles of well-kept beaches, the two-and-a-half-mile Boardwalk, the Downtown shopping district, the inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. Families from all over the country come to Ocean City to sit on her shore, look at her ocean, feel the warm breeze in their hair and most of all, relax and build memories together. Ocean City receives accolades just about every year for having one of the best beaches in America. In 2014, the island won Best Boardwalk and Favorite NJ Downtown and won four different awards for its amazing beaches. It’s no surprise then that the city takes pride in keeping the beaches clean, safe and ready for your chairs, umbrellas and sand castles day after day. If you’re looking for a first-class vacation, Ocean City has everything – beaches, Boardwalk, okay, we mentioned that, big-city shopping, outstanding dining options, a municipal airport, golf course, recre-

ational fields, special events, family festivities... we’re talking endless possibilities here. Together with the bustling Community Center (housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center, and Free Public Library), there’s the famed Music Pier (home of the Ocean City Pops), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, we’ve got plenty for you to do. Let’s start at the tip of the Atlantic. Ocean City has miles of soft clean sand from one end of the island to the other. Put on your explorer hat and take a beach walk. They are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in summer. For more details, see the events on page 11. Guarding these beaches is the Ocean City Beach Patrol, one of the oldest in the country. Follow their instructions and remember to always SWIM NEAR A GUARD and listen for their whistle. Move inland a few feet and you’ll come across the Ocean City Boardwalk, a two-and-a-half mile stretch lined with shops and restaurants of every kind, movie theatres, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and a water park like no other. The Boardwalk hosts free family events such as Character Nights, where you can meet the Boardwalk Mascots and watch them parade in surreys down the planks. When it comes to shopping, Ocean City has what you need. Asbury Avenue and the Downtown Shopping District from 6th to 14th streets is a destination spot. Our Historic Downtown is a collection of over 100 shops and cafes. OC retailers put their heart and soul into their businesses. And that makes for a top-notch retail experience all year round. Mixed in are made-by-you studios and service providers along a street lined with bright flowers and

smiling people. There are also a ton of special events in the Downtown during the year, including Funtastic Tuesdays, holiday shopping days and a lot more. See page 70 for more info on the Downtown, between the beach and the bay on Asbury. Continuing toward the west is what the locals refer to simply as “the bay” – Peck Bay and the Great Egg Harbor Bay – where you’ll find every water sport imaginable, including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. There are great opportunities to see pristine ecosystems up close and personal. Aquatic & Fitness Center The Center is a multi-faceted facility that encourages people of all ages and fitness levels to participate in programs that promote good health. In other words, it’s a great place to work out. The Center has strength training and cardiovascular equipment; a 25-meter saltwater pool, a studio for aerobics, yoga, and pilates, racquetball, babysitting, and youth programming spaces. Located in the Community Center; (609) 398-6900. Ocean City Historical Museum OCHM depicts early Ocean City’s history with period room displays and vintage clothing, a large display of old Ocean City photographs and postcards, dolls and toys. Displays of items from the city’s past will delight visitors. The Sindia Room features a scale model of Ocean City’s most famous shipwreck and a lighted eight-by-eight-foot stained glass window showing the Sindia under sail. Located in the Community Center; (609) 399-1801. The Ocean City Free Public Library The Ocean City Library strives to be the “intel-

lectual, social and cultural heart of our community, providing a place to go for information, literacy and cultural resources, in a comfortable, attractive and convenient environment.” Of course you can borrow books at the library, but there’s more than that. The library has movies to entertain you, newspapers to inform you, programs and workshops to enlighten you. And more. (609) 399-2434. Ocean City Municipal Golf Course Ocean City has a public, 12-hole, par three golf course. Set in the scenic meadows of the bay area, the golf course provides a beautiful and fun way to spend a few hours of the day in Ocean City. All ages are welcome, but children under 12 years old must be accompanied by a parent. Located at Bay Avenue at 26th Street. Call (609) 399-1315. Ocean City Pops Orchestra Every year, the Ocean City Pops brings internationally-renowned guest performers to the stage at the Music Pier. Visit oceancitypops.com. Community Art Projects CAP keeps the island decorated in fun, lovely art work that comes up when you least expect it. Visit communityartprojects.com. Ocean City Theatre Company The OCTC works with the Ocean City Pops orchestra to put on wonderful fully-staged Broadway-style productions. Every summer there are three to five performances under the direction of Michael Hartman. OCTC also runs a recreation program to bring the theatre to young children who love the arts. Surfing Seventh street The early ‘80s were a magical time for surfing at Seventh Street Beach. The days were long, the waves were great, and the close-knit crew that hung out there were lovin’ life in OC. By Stefanie Godfrey

S

OMETIMES when you’re a kid, you’re lucky enough to hang with a cool crowd. I’m not talking about the most popular or the best looking people, just a group that gets along, has fun, and basically creates magic that can usually be spotted looking back, just a little easier than it can be while you’re in the midst. But even as you’re in the thick, you know – there is something special there. Then you tuck your board under your arm, jump off the jetty rocks and plunge into the swirl of the Seventh Street ocean. At least this is what you did if you were one of the kids lucky enough to hang at Seventh Street beach in Ocean City in the early-’80s. “My parents would drop me off, go to work all day and pick me up at dusk. I’d hang with the boys. We’d surf all day, play games on the beach, walk the Boardwalk, get pizza. We’d get five bucks for the day. It was so different back then,” said Teresa Byrd, a member of the Seventh Street crew in the early ‘80s who still lives close by and works in OC. Teresa began surfing around age 12, learning from a friend’s mom. She was pretty much the only girl amidst a gang of guys, something that makes her smile today. “My friend Pam Miller’s mom taught me how to surf. She’d push us off on surfboards until we got it. Then we started doing contests and it went from there,” said Teresa. So many of the surfers at Seventh Street during that time had serious skills; a must have, actually according to John “Boy” Farren, one of the Seventh Street surfers. “It was a hyper-competitive breeding ground for great surfers – a very magical time period. You had to pay your dues. There was a pecking order and there were no shortcuts,” said John. “There are unwritten rules in surfing, like who has the right of way. Lack of ocean knowledge was apparent and a danger to all in the water. On a crowded summer day with

23

waves, Seventh Street could be a very dangerous place with fiberglass and sharp fins being flung around. If the rules weren’t followed people would get hurt by collisions, pilings, jetties, fins, other surfboards, etc. The older guys would dish out the dues and teach the rules to us ‘groms’ (young guys/girls), you just took it like a little brother... it meant that you were in and accepted by the ‘tribe’. It also meant that no outsider could mess with us. We were a big family and our home away from home was Seventh Street.” The tribe John refers to was called the LONO tribe according to Charlie Bowman, deputy fire chief for OC and Seventh Street lifeguard from 1982-1986. “The kids used to say they were the LONO Tribe. Locals Only No Outsiders,” said Charlie. Charlie, like Teresa, began surfing at 12 years old. He is an OC native, the third generation to grow up on the island. “My grandfather George Bowman taught science at the old high school,” said Charlie. “Growing up in OC, I didn’t know (the island) went anywhere past Ninth Street. As a kid, we did everything along the beach and the bay in that area. Back then there were a lot of

24

empty lots, we played baseball, golfed. We could ride our bikes all around the gardens.” In 1982, Charlie spoke with then Recreation Director Don Pileggi, and asked to be considered as the surfing lifeguard. “I had already taken the beach patrol test and Don gave me the opportunity. Nothing was cooler than being the Seventh Street surfing lifeguard in the 1980s. It was a cool scene back then. Hanging out with the kids, giving surfing lessons. It was a dream come true. The guards I worked with were Jimmy Kirk and Stu Walker,” explained Charlie. Parents, including Teresa’s, put their trust in Charlie and his fellow guards nearly every day in summer. “There was always a beach crew down there. The same people would come every day. The moms would look over the rail at us and say, ‘Charlie, Jim, Stu, I dropped my kids off, I’ll be back at five.’ They’d throw us a couple dollars for pizza and we would watch the kids all day,” said Charlie. “Back then the surfing beach was from 5th to 7th. We had that beach, because there was no beach – the waves went right underneath the Boardwalk.” Riding those waves is also a stand out memory for John.

“In the summer I would get there at dawn smelling Johnson’s Popcorn. It was not uncommon for us to surf 10 hours a day so we needed fuel. You could eat all day for $5. Our diets consisted of Coney Islands and doughnuts at Bill’s “Hol’ N One,” – three pretzels for a $1, and maybe a couple of slices for 50 cents each. We’d play some pinball, hang out on the railing or the steps and bother the beach tagger. On a good day when the tide was high, the jetty known as the ‘L’ would start to break and you’d take a wave all the way under the Boardwalk.” The kids at Seventh Street during this time were good. Really good. Soon they began entering contests and winning them. Then they began to travel. “They had different contests all the time. Don Pileggi started an OC contest. Then there were the Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) and Nationals – all on Seventh Street,” said Teresa. “You could compete in all of them or you could compete in Nationals which would take you to California or you could do ESA which would take you to Florida or to Hatteras. So you did whatever and you were there all the time, so you just did it because you were there. Everyday.”

Teresa’s dad Ed Town used to take her and the rest of the crew all over in his big blue van to wherever they needed to go to compete. He also chaperoned if they had to fly to competitions like the ESA or National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA). “Chuck Allison ran the NSSA. My dad co-ran it with him. All the boys loved him, he took us to everything. He took us to Hatteras, he took us to Florida. Just him by himself – flew us to Florida,” said Teresa. Ed took the Seventh Street crew to compete in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Today, on the Cocoa Beach Pier, there are surfboards lining the walls with quotes on them. One says, “Surfing is the most blissful experience you can have on this planet. A taste of heaven – John McCarthy.” At least one of Seventh Street crew shared this quote’s mantra. “The other side of the coin is the ‘soul surfer,’” explained John. “Soul surfers couldn’t really care less about contests. Soul surfers

just do it for the beauty and freedom that surfing gives you. When you are surfing, nothing else matters, no problems exist.”

Starry Night Astrophotographer Jack Fusco captures the night sky like you’ve never seen before by Stefanie Godfrey

Look at the stars, look how they shine for you – Coldplay

T

HE STARS shine bright for many of us, but for landscape astrophotographer Jack Fusco, they shine a lot brighter. That’s because Jack spends his days and nights seeking out locations to capture the true awesomeness of the starry night in a photograph; the constellations, planets and even the Milky Way. Jack grew up about 40 minutes north of Ocean City in Toms River, and though he visited Cape May County on occasion, it was when he came to take pictures that the area really shined for him. “Once I went to Cape May County to shoot photography, I almost exclusively went down to that area. The sky is a little darker, I love the beaches. There is a little more variety on the beaches too. In the off season, it was really great because there weren’t as many people there and there was even less light pollution than normal. That’s the biggest thing to overcome for this type of photography is the light pollution,” said Jack. “Growing up in Toms River, I never thought of the stars much, because when I walked outside at night, you couldn’t see many stars. Jack first began shooting what he refers to as “landscape astrophotography” or “night photography” four years ago. It was during a European tour with the band The Casting Out, that he starting taking pictures. It blossomed into night photography, a relatively new genre at the time. “There weren’t any documents or guides (to shooting at night), so it was a lot of trial and error. I think that’s part of what made it so exciting and rewarding too,” said Jack, who is self-taught. Though he began with an “entry-level” DSLR camera, he soon upgraded and now has higher end equipment. Night photography pushes the limits of the camera a little more according to Jack, but is accessible to anyone with any camera they might have. “No matter what camera you have, you can get into it. There’s different limitations to each camera. When I teach my workshops, I gear them around getting the best out of the equipment you have,” said Jack. These workshops are taught in summer in Cape May County, though Jack recently relocated to San Diego, California, closer to his favorite all time location for photography. “My favorite place is Alberta, Canada. I’ve been there twice now and both times, when I leave, I feel like I haven’t seen half of the things I wanted to see both in Banff and Jasper National Park. I joke that photography

In addition to that, the Canadian Rockies block out light pollution from any city or town. It’s an ideal spot for stargazing,” he said. Stargazing has taken a more in depth turn for Jack since he began shooting the night sky. “As I’ve gotten more and more into night photography, I’ve learned a lot more about astronomy and it’s become a huge aid in planning and figuring out what to shoot and where to shoot. Or when to shoot it,” Jack Though you can see stars and constellations and even said. the Milky Way with the naked eye, the camera makes the Planning is essential for some of Jack’s shots, such as images more intense. the star trail pictures.
