atb ABOUT THIS BOOK
MY MIND FLASHED A MEMORY LATELY… it was spring 2002. Stef and I were newly married and living in a duplex outside Philadelphia. The memory is Stef and I walking the beach at 16th Street. It was one of those beautiful Ocean City afternoons when the breeze is just right and the sun is high and I remember thinking “this needs to be my beach.” A month later Dave Nahan from the Ocean City Sentinel offered me a job and here I am in 2020, so very grateful to have Ocean City as my beach. Like many Ocean City lovers, I discovered this town as a child. I remember trying to keep up with my older siblings as we careened the streets around our northend, week-long rental. The surf used to roll up under the Boardwalk in those days but other than that, this place is still quite the same. And I love that. I love the ebb and flow of the seasons as the party hits high gear in July and then chills in February. I love seeing summer friends returning, continuing a family tradition that often goes back generations. Along with the usual crowd of longtime visitors, I love seeing a lot of new visitors rolling into town.
I think word of this area’s magic has spread far and wide and I’m happy to see fresh faces (often sunkissed) discovering this place. So welcome everyone, Welcome to Ocean City. This town plays a fantastic host and you will not be bored (unless you want to be) all summer – nay all year – long. Beaches, bay, Boardwalk, shopping, dining, and a laidback vibe will keep you just as busy as you want to be. This area has so many special places and this book is your best guide for seeing many of them. Since 2008, this book has provided a listing of the best restaurants, the most unique shops, the coolest activities, the most comfy accommodations, professional services, and all the amenities you may need while you’re here. This is the most comprehensive guide to all the island has to offer. There are eateries, bakeries, coffeehouses and the like you won’t find anywhere else. There is so much variety all over town and you will delight as you peel back the layers. This book will help.

woc WELCOME TO OCEAN CITY
I
T WAS the best of times, it was the worst of times... Just kidding! In Ocean City, it’s always the best of times... Back a few months, on yet another rainy, dreary (but warm!) winter day, I walked up on the Boardwalk and despite being on deadline for this book (read: sleep deprived), and busy (read: zero inner peace) I went up to the planks, saw the ocean and bam, inner peace came flooding back in. For me, Ocean City is a guaranteed spot for solace. It could be the salt air, the negative ions, or whatever sorcery is involved, but once I’m on island time, it’s like a deep calming breath. Aaaahhhhh. Ocean City is eight miles of well-groomed beaches (some of the finest in the world if you ask me), the two-and-a-half-mile Boardwalk, the Downtown Asbury Avenue shopping district, the inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. From the northern tip in the Gardens neighborhood, to the South End and everything in between, there are loads of nooks and crannies to explore while you’re on island time.
Whether it’s spotting a bald eagle (or an osprey), at the rookery off the Welcome Center on the bridge, or zooming around the track on a roller coaster, Ocean City provides the fun, freedom, and fair weather for freewheelin’ families. This island has everything – beaches, Boardwalk, big-city shopping, outstanding dining, a municipal airport, golf course, recreational fields, special events, family festivities... we’re talking endless possibilities here. Together with the bustling Community Center – housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center (with an indoor salt water pool) and Free Public Library, there’s the famed Music Pier (home of the Ocean City POPS and Greater Ocean City Theatre Company performances), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, you’ll always have options for fun. If it’s the beach’s siren call that brought you here, the first rule of thumb is to swim near a lifeguard. The OCBP is an award-winning organization designed to keep you safe. Take advantage. Running parallel to that gorgeous ocean is the Ocean City Boardwalk, a two-and-a-half-mile stretch lined
with shops and restaurants of every kind, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and a water park. There are also weekly family events like Mummers Night and Family Night. Get ready to strut your stuff with the best of them. Asbury Avenue and the Downtown Shopping District from 6th to 14th streets is a destination. The Historic Downtown has over 100 shops and cafes. When you shop here, you get friendly faces and conversation along with your purchases. There are also made-by-you studios and service providers along the flowered-lined street. Head Downtown on a Tuesday or Thursday from 10am-1pm for Market Days and Funtastic Tuesdays. Continuing toward the west is the Great Egg Harbor Bay where you’ll find every water sport imaginable, including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. There are great opportunities to see pristine ecosystems up close and personal. Sit back, relax, let this book show you the adventures that await. You may even find your own inner peace. - Stef Godfrey

HEF Dave Rihl continues to kill it year after year serving up his Hawaiian plate-lunch concept – a protein, salad and rice - as well as offering a nice variety of soups and appetizers. Dave perfected his technique during a stint with a lunch wagon on Oahu’s North Shore and this is one of the best meals on the island. One bite of the homemade tropical vinaigrette or sweet huli sauce and you’ll be glad Dave found his way back to the Jersey Shore. The hula crew prepares dishes using only the best ingredients and serves them up with a smile. Try the tasty appetizers including Firecracker Shrimp, or order one of the fresh salads, Chef Dave’s recipe of fresh seafood and produce, mixed with a dash of Hawaiian flair, makes this restaurant something special. The staff is charming bunch who bring your plates out hot and fast. There's a kids menu available and burgers too. ENNIE’S Bread and Italian Market remains one of OC's favorite go-to places. With a wide but focused selection of Italian specialty items and their unmatched bread choices, they continue to pack 'em in all day long. This is a true Italian market similar to what you’d find in Philadelphia or New York. Located on the corner of 12th and Asbury, Bennie’s is filled with a thoughtful array of delicious and authentic flavors. The menu is expansive (and delicious) but, this is not a sit-down restaurant (there’s no waitress service, but there are several tables where you can eat on site). Whether you take the eggplant or chicken cutlets home or eat your pizza with prosciutto there, it will likely be some of the best Italian food you’ve tasted. Bennie’s menu includes daily focaccias, stuffed breads, tomato pie, sandwiches, soups, salads, meatballs, olive oils, and more. They cater too, so this Night in Venice order up a tray of eggplant parm, lasagna, and sandwiches. And don’t forget that Bennie’s has a great selection of dolces to finish your meal including cannoli, muffins, cookies, tiramisu, and more. Visit their second location – Bennie's Northend Deli and Subs – at 4th and Ocean... and their third location opening in 2020 at 55th and West!

ERVING award-winning food for 52 years, the Crab Trap has become a landmark sought out by locals and Ocean City visitors alike. The Wallace family started the restaurant in 1967 as a small local tavern and has watched it become a “must visit” for guests today. The Crab Trap has consistent food and family-friendly service for lunch, dinner and cocktails. Though it's known for seafood, try the daily-roasted prime rib, steak, and pasta dishes. The nautical-themed bar is large yet cozy with live music throughout the year. When you sit down, a smiling bartender will pour your favorite glass of wine or cocktail (served with fresh squeezed juice). In season, make your way to the bay and grab a seat at Crabby Jack’s outdoor deck bar, adjacent to the restaurant. Crabby Jack’s is a popular hang out (meet your friends there!) serving up lunch, small bites, and specialty cocktails overlooking the Great Egg Harbor Bay. CE cream is the food of the gods... but you knew this right? It's creamy, dreamy, just sweet enough and the perfect way to get your dessert on in OCNJ. Now what if we told you there were two ice cream parlors on the island that not only serve fab ice cream and gourmet hot dogs, but also serve up a side of free family fun all summer long. Now that's the American dream! Though these Family Entertainment Nights set Johnny B Goode apart from other ice cream shops, it’s also the quality of ingredients, including the fresh baked waffles, that make them a stand out on the OC ice cream scene. That’s right, when you order waffles and ice cream at JBG, the waffle is made right then and there. How’s that for fresh, Daddy-O? Johnny B Goode serves up the freshest, creamiest, dreamiest ice creams (including some homemade flavors). Choose from malts, shakes, cones, and sundaes. There are hot and cold coffee and espresso beverages too, and gourmet hot dogs. The sundaes will make you go ape and fresh-fruit smoothies will make you flip. JiLLy's french fries are fresh cut all day long with the same methods since the day they opened in 2001. Each potato is inspected, cleaned, cut, cooked, and served by hand to ensure the freshest and most consistent product. There’s nothing like it in the whole world. Your night on the Ocean City Boardwalk is not complete until you’ve grabbed a bucket of Johnson’s Caramel Popcorn. Johnson’s Popcorn is an Ocean City icon. Not sure where they’re located? Simply follow the aroma of warm popcorn and caramel-y goodness. Want to give some to friends, but don’t want to carry it around? No prob. Johnson’s ships anywhere in the world! And try their other flavors: Peanut Crunch, Artisan Cheddar, Chocolate Drizzle and Platinum Edition. There are three locations spread out along the Ocean City Boardwalk; near 14th Street, 8th Street and 6th Street. All of Johnson’s Caramel Popcorn is hand-mixed in large copper kettles. And that distinctive aroma drifting up and down the Boardwalk always draws a crowd – go ahead and join them, it’s ok. A batch is made every seven minutes... all day, every day, all year!

INCE 1956, Manco and Manco has been serving up some of the most delicious pizza on the Boards. Their flagship store on the corner of 9th and the Boardwalk is big and shiny and those Manco memories that you love are still waiting to be made inside. And if you didn’t know, their new menu includes wings, tenders and fries. And the pizza remains as good as it’s ever been. For over six decades the Manco family has served the thin, crispy pizza pie that makes your mouth water just thinking about it. This is legendary pizza with a tangy, fresh sauce, quality cheese served piping hot with a taste that will stick in your memory like a warm summer breeze. The aroma as you walk down the Boardwalk will make you think it’s time for a slice no matter the time of day. And it’s always entertaining to watch as the pieman shapes and tosses the secret-recipe dough before sliding it into the rotating oven. It’s a show! Even the traditional sequence of ingredients is different – at Manco and Manco it’s cheese THEN sauce. Luckily for all of us, there are still three locations on the Boards; 8th, 9th and 12th streets.

HE scent of hot, sweet donuts at Nauti Donuts is so enticing, we barely made it out of the 21st Street shop before sneaking into the box for a sample. This is confection perfection. With flavors like Mermaid’s Delight (strawberry icing, fruity pebbles, and marshmallow drizzle) and The Salty Dog (maple icing, pork roll, and a salted caramel drizzle) you’ll feel like a sailor navigating the waves of the dessert ocean. Gabby and Chris O’Hara opened Nauti Donuts in the summer of 2018. Chances are good that you’ll see one or both of their smiling faces when you stop in for your morning (or afternoon) treat. Ordering is easy. Keep it simple with a Classic donut, or choose from the Nauti Dozen, a cultivated crew of crave worthy confections. You can even customize the donut of your dreams by choosing a coating, a topping, and a drizzle. They’re made right then and there in front of you. Nauti Donuts also offers an impressive selection of caffeinated drinks to keep your crew going. Hot coffee, cold brew, nitro brew, espresso and lattes are among those served. Then... just when you think you’ve seen it all... you spot the Jonny Tsunami. It’s a glazed donut topped with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge drizzle, rainbow jimmies and powdered sugar. No matter what you choose, you’ll come in hungry and leave feeling Nauti!

Prep's thin crust Boardwalk pizza is some of the best on the island. Lots of people recommend Prep's plain pie as the best, but they offer every topping imaginable (try the cheese steak pizza) as well as tasty pepperoni rolls, calzones, salads, sandwiches, wraps and more. Plus there's an ice cream bar serving Richman's and Breyer's Ice Cream. Mind. Blown. They feature a billion different flavors and a zillion different toppings. Try a warm, madefresh, waffle with a hearty scoop of salted caramel pretzel ice cream. Oh how yummy! There's milkshakes, frozen yogurt, brownies, cones and sundaes too. You'll love the colorful design here - always fresh and clean. The wait staff is always friendly and there's plenty of inside seating. The views are awesome but there are plenty of large screen TVs all around. They have cool gear too. Get your orange on at Prep's.

INCE 1981, Spadafora's has been a yearly tradition for generations of Ocean City lovers. Spadafora’s Restaurant and Clam Bar, which enters its 40th season this year (they have to be doing something right!), continues to serve up their famous dockside-fresh local flavor, along with a big helping of friendliness, just off the Boardwalk. Delivered daily from their fish market, Spadafora’s seafood is always served moist, not overcooked, and not covered up with overwhelming sauces. The fresh flavor is the star of their dishes. The soups, salads, and desserts are all homemade and the fried seafood (which is hand-breaded) is cooked in pure, cholesterolfree vegetable oil. You’ll taste the freshness immediately. Enjoy ice cold local clams and fresh ocean breezes with your friends and family on the outdoor patio. Create your own clambake with their wide selection of fresh shellfish. And be sure to save room for Cindy’s key lime pie... Ocean City’s original key lime pie. Early Bird Monday through Friday from 3pm to 5pm. ELATO solves everything. Go ahead, ponder that for a sec... we'll wait. It's true, isn't it? Gelato, ice cream's fabulous Italian cousin, is the perfect answer to all of life's little stumbles, surprises, and successes. Got a little sunburn today? Cool down with a raspberry truffle waffle cone. Scored a goal in your last game? Celebrate with a Salted Caramel. Won the last round of air hockey? That's worth two scoops of the creamy, dreamy frozen concoction that is gelato. Gelato is a yummy treat that was born in Italy. It’s similar to traditional ice cream, but it’s made with whole milk as opposed to cream so it has fewer calories. It's also more dense, creamier, and tastier than traditional ice cream. Step out of your comfort zone and try a Frutti Di Bosco, Stracciatella or Pistachio. Free samples are encouraged!

HIS year there is even more to love at Yes She Can. Owner Dana Wilson realized her dream of a bigger shop when she took over the former Village Hallmark spot at Wayside Village in Marmora. The new space is big, bright, and filled with the fabulous lingerie you’ve come to expect from the shop. Haven’t been in? One walk through the glass doors and you’ll likely feel the love (and personal attention) from Dana or a shop employee. Dana has been a bra fitter for over eight years and knows not only how to pick the right bra for you, but also how to make the experience comfortable and you feel confident with your selection. Though an appointment for a fitting is recommended, Yes She Can makes it easy with a scheduling app on their website, Facebook and Instagram pages. Yes She Can still has the variety of sizes and styles you can’t find anywhere else in South Jersey, and they’ve added even more amazing items to their sales floor. They offer post surgical garments, a wide variety of pocketed bras, prosthetics, comfortable pajamas, bridal lingerie, and more. Plus, they offer a monthly breast cancer group to help support women in need. Yes She Can’s new space also has oversized couches and a bar to accommodate group parties, like bridal parties, bachelorette parties, birthday parties, you name it! After your visit to Yes She Can, you’ll not only walk out with a well fitting bra, but a positive body image too. How’s that for service with a smile?

Y NOW, you've probably heard of CBD oil. It's full name is cannabidiol and though it's surged in popularity, it's actually been around since its discovery in 1940. The Asbury Avenue shop is in its second year and has the same high quality products you've come to expect, plus many new ones to explore. TANDING at the corner of 4th and Atlantic is US Life Saving Station 30, one of only three original life saving stations still standing in New Jersey. In 1886, the building stood next to the sandy shore and ocean. Surfmen protecting sailors and any others from the ravaging waves lived in the station while off duty from their demanding job. Back then there was an average of four shipwrecks a month. The job of surfmen was so demanding that the motto of the Ocean City station was “You have to go out; You don’t have to come back; So others may live.” Today, the Life Saving Station stands as a living history museum. Visitors can walk through the building as the surfmen did some 130 years ago. The kitchen, dining room, and boat house are all filled with period pieces that can be picked up and tried out. Play croquet on the lawn, complete a report at the Keeper’s desk, or sit in the surfboat. History is ready to come alive at US Life Saving Station 30.

ASALT bodywork believes everyone deserves a fresh start. And fresh is the approach and vibe at this well-appointed studio on 8th Street. Owner Marci's belief that therapy sessions should be affordable for everyone is just one of the things that sets this peaceful place apart. They also understand the importance of reducing the toxins our bodies pick up throughout our everyday lives. At basalt, clients pay for the session, not the treatment type, how's that for fresh? Book a 90-minute or 120-minute session online or with a quick phone call or text. Since Marci is both a registered nurse and a massage therapist, she understands the ability of massage to heal, cleanse and launch you into a more peaceful mindset.

TEPHANIE'S work is currently available at Peace of Wood, 1112 Asbury Avenue. For more information on Stephanie's art, including shows and purchase info, email 123wipeout@comcast. net. Below, Stephaine describes her early inspiration and current art. "I was always into anything art related as early as I can remember. When I was a kid I found a box of prosthetics in my grandfather's basement. He had made ears, eyes and noses for people injured in the war. A creepy find to most kids, but I was interested. I was amazed at how he made them so realistic. From there I took every art class offered. I like leaving my mark and making people smile. Over the years, I've made some beach creations out of stuff found on the sand. I would leave these for someone to stumble upon. I just want to make others happy. When people connect to my art, that makes my heart happy. I have been blessed with a gift of seeing beautiful things in the mundane. I'm so happy that I can see these things. Whether a swirl in a puddle or a reflection in a rain drop. I like to look. I like to see things. My mind is constantly thinking of new things to do. I have so many crazy ideas circling."
