SPITERI Graphic Designer
Stephanie Spiteri, born in Qrendi, Malta, is currently studying Graphic Design at MCAST Art and Design Institute. Her work has been varied but her main preference and focus has always been branding and typography. Her inspiration comes from chalkboard designs and typographic art. Her designs have been mainly experimental but she has been exercising her strengths to have better results. Stephanie has been looking up to the Art Deco Movement, which in her opinion is a wonderful and dynamic era. With the assignments given at the institute she has done a lot of experimentation in various fields like illustration, animation and motion graphics, packaging, branding and typography. The media Spiteri uses varies from traditional media like pen, pencil and paper to digital media using a Graphic’s tablet for digital illustrations. Stephanie aspires to start a career in Graphic Design: branding, magazine covers, logos and using her typographic skills in creating posters.

The concept idea behind this logo was to incorporate two eras into one. Since the theme for this year’s concert was Heart and Soul, I had to keep in mind that Soul music is going to be playing a big part in this concert. After a lot of brain storming and idea sketching I decided to go with the hype that ‘The Great Gatsby’ was creating; Art Deco is an era of a very decorative design which looks very chic and stylish. Thus in this project I created a fusion of these two eras by using Art Deco style in a 1950s jukebox, which was a very symbolic piece from the 1950s, the era of Soul music. The design consists of the outline of the jukebox having an Art Deco feel to it; the fonts being used are also inspired from the same era.
This project was intended for a concert that is held every 2 years, ‘Voices’. Theme was ‘Heart and Soul’. Programs used: Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator
In this project we had to create our own corporate identity; we decided to create an identity for a new cafĂŠ in the heart of a really hectic area at the University of Malta heights. The cafĂŠ will have a nice relaxing atmosphere and its target audience is the younger generation that is mainly University students. The concept behind this project was to create a logo that incorporates what the shop is about; hence the logo has the shape of a cupcake. The tag line for the logo captures the essence of the identity we created.
This project was created as part of an assignment brief. It was created with the help of a fellow classmate, Alexia Sant Manduca; the idea was to create a new corporate identity of our own. Programs used: Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator
The concept behind this logo was to create something chic and sophisticated whilst incorporating the femininity of the client. I chose to depict the original form of the cupcake in my design with a little twist; I used swirls to give the impression of the frosting typically found on cupcakes. This, I believe, gives the design an elegance which is further enhanced by the colours black and pink which I chose for this concept. All these elements, create a design which is refined yet stylish which the client insisted on.

For this font book, which was part of an assignment, I had to choose a particular font and create a font book corresponding to it. The font I chose was Garamond. For the book we also had to choose a poem from the Beats Generation and use parts of it. I created 5 different designs using different kerning size, spacing, weight and dimensions.

This type of design is something I do in my free time. I think of, or find a quote and then jazz it up by using various fonts (maximum of 3), that don’t clash together. First, I sketch the idea out then digitalize it. Sometimes, I prefer to leave the sketch in its original form as the handmade feel to it is occasionally more appropriate and looks better with certain quotes. To get inspirations for these designs I look up ‘Chalkboard designs’ which are very popular nowadays.

In this project we had to create a type design using poems from the Beats Generation. After creating these designs we chose each person’s best design to put in booklet form. Every person had something to do in this project. Next to each design everyone had to write a description about his/ her artwork for the reader to understand the design better.

The Yellow Pages motto is ‘Always by your side’ so the cover had to be something that is linked to this and Malta, since it is a local company. My idea was to edit something that has been around for a while in Malta; this is why I chose the eye found on the ‘Gardjola’ in Isla, that has been around since the Order of the Knight of Saint John were in Malta. I photographed it and then edited the middle of the eye to look like the Yellow Pages logo, to create the final look.

The idea behind this project was to promote Malta and its beautiful scenery. I photographed various locations around our island. After editing the photos that I took, I created hand written type for each location’s name and arranged it on each photo. With these photos I created 10 different postcards and coasters. I also created a pack of playing cards; I used a collage of 4 of my photographs as the back of my cards and I incorporated an element of the 8 pointed cross in the design of each of the suits.
This project was a self initiated one; I worked on creating things that will promote my country. Programs used: Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator
The idea behind this project was to create a new hero. I was inspired by Malta’s own history as my hero was one of the knights of Saint John who has survived and is living on for eternity. He protects Malta from all the villains that try to invade it. His logo is made from the Maltese cross and also the Maltese colours, red and white. His identity is not revealed, hidden off by his helmet, staying in darkness, never to be known.

The magazine’s design was entirely made by me, but the content was written by various authors. GoinGreen magazine is filled with articles about sustainability. In every article I included several images which I found myself if not provided with the articles. In each article I tried to include pull quotes to attract the reader’s attention to read the article. The colour scheme used in the magazine is mainly green, portraying nature.
