BE CYBER READY Protect the Big Picture

Cybersecurity means seeing more than the latest attack. It means seeing the next attack, next vulnerability, and next competitive advantage. It means making sure your cybersecurity experts and systems are ready. elcome to U.S. News STEM Solutions – The National Leadership Conference! This is our fifth annual forum focused on exploring the best practices, scalable solutions, and promising initiatives that will help the United States step up its STEM education efforts and create a workforce with the skills it requires in an increasingly technical world. Many of you have been with us before, and I thank you for your support and participation. To those of you who are first-timers, please make yourself at home. It’s a prime opportunity to share ideas and push forward concrete solutions to solving the STEM challenge. Because it is still a challenge. We’ve made great strides in

BREAKOUT SESSIONS WEDNESDAY, MAY 18 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Ready, Set, Code: The New Essential Skill Room: Holiday 1

Chicago and San Francisco are among several major cities that have recently announced plans to make computer science classes mandatory as early as elementary school to help students be prepared for 21st-century jobs. A wide range of free – and popular – online and afterschool programs exist to give young learners practice with coding and other computer skills. How are schools integrating CS into their curricula nationwide and what do the results show? Panelists will share what they have learned from folding computer science into K-12 classrooms and extracurricular programs and address important issues like training teachers and investing in the necessary technology. Getting More Girls Into the Game Room: Holiday 2

The myth that girls don’t like – or can’t excel in – science and math is increasingly being dispelled, but a recent Gallup poll found that too often girls are still receiving that wrong-headed message and other damaging ones from parents, teachers and pop culture. A 2012 Girls Scouts study found that 74 percent of girls were interested in STEM subjects and careers but that interest dropped during two key periods: middle school and the transition between high school and college. Afterschool programs, role models, college cohorts, corporate leadership development, and more can all play a crucial role in bridging the gap between STEM interest and success. Explore several programs that are making an impact in increasing the number of girls who come to science and math stick with it. What once sounded like science fiction are actually some of the most high-tech – and high-demand – jobs of today: drone-makers, big data analysts, cybersecurity professionals, wearable tech developers, biomedical engineers, 3-D printing technicians. All of these jobs require extensive STEM skills, particularly in computer science, and many of these occupations are poised for growth in the future, particularly in the Baltimore-Washington region. Out-of-School Learning: Making a Difference for the Underserved Room: Holiday 2

Students spend limited time in the classroom learning science and math, so how they spend their time outside school can play a critical role in their success in STEM. Research from the Afterschool Alliance demonstrated that by almost every metric, students who were part of high-quality out-ofschool STEM programs were more interested in these subjects, more likely to major in them, and more likely to get higher grades. African-American and Latino students also participate in afterschool programs at a higher rate than the national average, so the opportunity to engage with these underserved populations outside of school hours is key. This session will offer practical lessons about several programs that have scaled up and shown success at building STEM achievement. In engineering, African-Americans and Hispanics represent only 15 percent of undergraduates and 11 percent of grad students, as well as just 1 in 10 professionals in the field. To recruit and retain more students of color in the field, many engineering schools are offering real-world coursework, creating summer bridge programs, designing living-learning communities, expanding mentorship programs, hiring minority faculty members, and building cohorts and peer networks. Companies are joining the effort, too, by working with college chapters of professional engineering societies and also offering scholarships and internships for students of color, who they hope will one day diversify their own ranks. Many of these same programs and partnerships are helping to bring more women into engineering programs and jobs nationwide, too. This session will explore what’s working at engineering schools that have made great strides in broadening participation of women and minorities and includes a discussion of a new U.S. News white paper on the topic. From the kindergarten classroom to the halls of academia, from the factory floor to the boardroom, there’s more focus on STEM than ever before. That’s good news, as there is much more work to be done. The second annual U.S. News/Raytheon STEM Index found that while the number of jobs, types of degrees granted, and level of student interest in STEM is increasing, there are still stark gender and racial gaps in the field -- and the nation still underperforms relative to global education benchmarks. You are the community’s leading voices, so come take advantage of this open-mic session: Share your ideas and suggestions with fellow attendees on what actions America’s next president should take in the coming years to ensure that every child receives a quality education and the nation maintains its competitive edge in the global economy.
