WELCOME BUILDING AMERICA’S WORKFORCE A BLUEPRINT FOR TOMORROW
W
elcome to the sixth annual U.S. News STEM Solutions National Leadership Conference. From the beginning, our forum has been about spotlighting what’s working to address some of the most pressing issues in STEM education and workforce development. Over the next three days, we’ll be examining a wide range of promising programs and scalable solutions that are transforming the STEM landscape across the country. Even with all of your hard work and attention, the STEM skills gap remains a critical issue. Students in the U.S. continue to lag behind many of their foreign peers in math and science. K-12 schools and colleges are having a tough time recruiting and retaining enough students interested in the STEM fields. And many employers simply can’t find enough workers with the right skills to succeed in today’s – and tomorrow’s – jobs. The challenge is especially acute for many female and minority students and professionals, who remain vastly underrepresented across the industry. A new administration is settling into Washington with a promise to restore jobs, although we still have few answers about the federal government’s STEM priorities. Fortunately, there are many pockets of progress in communities across the country. We’re delighted to be returning to San Diego, which is home to a number of innovative STEM partnerships and cutting-edge industries in advanced manufacturing, biotech, cybersecurity, and more. We’ll hear from some of the city’s most venerable educators, employers, and STEM advocates about what makes this place such a hotbed for science and tech. We are launching a Maker City section on usnews.com, and we’ll be sharing more details about that project in the coming days. Driven by the growing maker movement and local innovation in education, workforce development, and more, we will showcase some of the most forward-thinking localities that are redefining what it means to be a 21st-century city. We hope the data and insight will provide a blueprint for other cities to learn how to revolutionize themselves for the future. In addition, we’ve created a wide range of special projects and products to help consumers understand STEM and see how it impacts their everyday lives. You can seek out the Best STEM High Schools in your area or take an inside look at the latest Best STEM Jobs, based on salary, projected growth, and other factors. Our new Best States rankings allow anyone to dig deep into which states earn top marks based on a variety of STEM-related indicators, such as education, healthcare, and economic potential. Of course, one of our biggest goals is to act as a central forum for STEM leadership – to keep the conversations we have at this conference going all year long. We’ll be continuing our in-depth STEM coverage and working to share stories and insight with students, teachers, parents, and communities. There is plenty of work to be done, but there are at least some hopeful signs that the word on STEM is spreading. After all, one of last year’s most critically acclaimed – and top-grossing – films was “Hidden Figures,” about three real-life STEM superheroes who played a vital role for NASA during the space race. The success of that film proves that there are a lot of powerful STEM stories to tell, and that the public is eager for them. We’re happy to help share them.
Best,
