A Programme for Strategic UN Leadership
Facing global challenges through leadership innovation Complex, devastating and far reaching events continue to challenge our leaders and tax our existing resources. Whether it is climate change, the global economic crisis, HIV/AIDS or poverty, the world looks to the UN for leadership in tackling multifaceted global problems. But is the UN sufficiently equipped to address all these issues with their complexities? To do so, the UN needs to have leaders from across the system who are creative, effective and inspired communicators, bridge builders and problem solvers.
How can the UN System Staff College help? The UN System Staff College (UNSSC) has developed a strategic leadership course, new in scope and perspective, new in inspiration and creativity and new in terms of inter-agency co-operation and relevance. A UN inter-agency reference group has helped the College carefully select a creative and talented faculty to design a focused, inspirational and action-oriented leadership programme.
Expected Results Dynamic, hands-on knowledge exposure. Programmes designed by a team of internationally recognized faculty aiming to: • Motivate colleagues and direct-reports through inspirational leadership. • Tackle complex global problems. • Effectively communicate, negotiate, mediate and engage in inspiring, collaborative decision-making. • Build stronger bridges amongst UN agencies.
Target Audience Director level.
Entry Requirements By nomination only.
Course content includes: leadership and inter-agency collaboration, problem solving in crisis situations, inspiring direct reports, followership, innovation, adaptive leadership and developing and honing each participant’s unique leadership style-while deepening their knowledge on global priorities.
Leadership in practice In collaboration with leaders in fields as wide as industry, music and haute cuisine, we offer a distinctive practical programme in which leadership is reflected, discussed, tested and applied in a safe learning environment. Participants bring to the programme a personal leadership challenge that they wish to share and discuss with their peers, enabling innovative solutions. Sharing is the leitmotiv of the course design.
Testimonials “The programme shall be a must for all UN Leaders to become more committed to their mission.” “The range and quality of speakers was outstanding.” “This programme made me see who I am.” “A flawlessly designed programme that gave new leaders time for reflection and fun!” “The quality of this programme was exceptional; excellent planning and outcome focused.” “Inspirational. Relevant to you The UN Leaders Programme is specifically designed for the senior staff at the director-level and complements the various agencies’ leadership courses. It highlights strategic leadership theory, skills and practice. A five-day programme is offered three times a year. Each cohort centres on the concept of leadership and around a specific global challenge. Themes range from human rights, sustainable development, ethics and accountability, communications technology and conflict-resolution, and other pressing global issues.
Main Programme Objectives • To give each participant the opportunity to review and develop their individual dynamic and unique style as a strategic leader. • To create a common culture of UN leadership and build an esprit de corps among senior leaders. • To lay the foundation of a community of leaders who share knowledge, practices and inspiration and can work across UN agencies creatively and collaboratively.
