I M M ACULATE CO N CEPTIO N CATH O L IC CHUR CH M+H Architects A project that I have been involved with from the beginning of my time at M+H Architects is the design of a new church building for Immaculate Conception, a Catholic Parish in Arnold, MO. They plan on razing their structurally unstable church building & rebuilding a new, traditional styled church. I have been involved with the project procurement, initial interview & led the schematic design / master planning for the new building. The parish is sad to see their original 1840’s building be torn down & wants the new building design to be an elegant, timeless building that will last forever. An element that made the design of the exterior unique was incorporating the Gothic arched stained glass windows that the church purchased from Visitation/St. Anne in St. Louis City before the Archdiocese sold the building. The parish wants the new building to use high quality materials so that they create a new building that will last forever. The design phase has gone through different stages to attempt to lower the construction cost. This project is currently on hold while the capital campaign is happening.
06
SITE DESIG N A major challenge this project faces is locating the new church building on a complex site that includes existing buildings, a cemetery & sports fields. Locating the new church on top of the hill near where the old church building was located poses a phasing issue, but allows the front of the church to be closest to the existing buildings and parking. This also locates the church on the highest area of the topography which maintains the steeple’s presence in Arnold & will be seen from the interstate & surrounding roads.

B ER K ELE Y ELE CTR IC CO O P ER ATIV E GO O S E CR EE K , SO UTH CAR O L IN A M+H Architects A project I’m currently working on is one of Berkeley Electric Cooperative’s branches located in Goose Creek, South Carolina. This project is a renovation to their existing office along with a roughly 5,500 SF addition. The addition will be used by the cooperative members & will showcase the latest services that they have to offer, along with providing customer service. We are currently in the beginning stages of construction documents for this project. The Cooperative expressed the need for a clear, welcoming entry. A ‘front porch’ element was incorporated into our design concept & I sketched up a couple design options, with the final design shown here. A design challenge that this project faced was how to incorporate the new addition into the old, dated office building. By drawing the attention to the corner entry, the existing building fades to the background.

ST . CH AR LES CO UNT Y EM ER G EN CY O P ER ATIO N S CENTER M+H Architects A major project I was involved with was the new Emergency Operations Center in St. Charles County. This is a 911 facility located in O’Fallon, MO designed to meet FEMA 361 standards. M+H Architects represented the design build team as the local architecture firm. We collaborated with Brinkmann Constructors & Architects Design Group, a Florida architecture firm that specializes in mission critical facilities. I was involved throughout project procurement, schematic design, construction documents & consturction administration. This facility is open & the Missouri State Emergency Management officials noted that the EOC has capabilities well beyond what they have, making this facility one of the very best in the state.

A development project located in downtown Bowling Green, Kentucky was a new building that I worked on in summer of 2014. It is a mixed use building with a rooftop patio and pool, as well as future commercial tenant spaces. My duties for this project included 100% of the Construction Documents, coordination with the consultants and clients and review of select shop drawings. Some of the biggest challenges with this project were detailing the roof top pavers, planters & shallow wading pool as well as the client altering the design multiple times during the end of the documentation process. Paying specific attention to unfamiliar details, consulting with my superiors and working overtime were ways that I overcame these obstacles.

A large set of projects that I worked on at PWArchitects was the Boone County Fire Protection District’s additions to nine existing fire stations and two new fire stations located throughout Mid-Missouri. I assisted the Project Architect by completing almost all of the Construction Documents and coordinating with the consultants and client. One of the unique elements in this project are the sleeping lofts that the residents requested in their bedrooms. Additionally, detailing the FEMA-rated storm shelter which also serves as a fitness room, educated me on common storm shelter design standards.

HEAR IN G & BALAN CE CLINIC P WA rc h i t e c t s , I n c . A tenant infill project designed for the Hearing and Balance Clinic of University of Missouri Hospitals allowed me to use my education emphasis of Heath and Wellness that I received from the University of Kansas. Knowing the common design needs of medical clinics allowed me to be a major asset. I attended all design meetings with the client and assisted the project architect during the construction document phase. One of the biggest challenges was the specific casework layout that the physician requested in all the patient & procedure rooms. The countertop is designed so the physician can face the patient while taking notes during the exam. A countertop that was at a slight angle with a rounded edge allows the doctor to take notes while facing the patient, but not protrude so much that it would impede the space needed during procedures.

A project that I completed during my time at PWA was an interior renovation to the main dining hall on the campus of Missouri Valley College located in Marshall, MO. I was involved in all phases which included 3D modeling of existing building, designing the new interior, coordinating with food service consultants and clients and 100% of Construction Documents. The client wanted to eliminate the existing ACT ceiling, 70’s brick walls and colors, and bring a fresher look to the space. The ceiling design was a main design focus which will expose the existing structural concrete tee’s and add ceiling clouds of varying heights and sizes.

One of the largest scale projects I worked on at PWArchitects was the new Emergency Communications Center located in Columbia, MO. PWArchitects teamed with Architects Design Group out of Winter Park, FL as the local design firm in charge of interiors, select construction document details and construction administration. Architects Design Group specializes in public safety, civic and government facilities and brought their expertise to the Boone County 911 Center. My duties included assisting with construction documents, coordination with consultants and the client, design meetings, site visits, construction administration and review of select shop drawings. For security purposes, Boone County does not want the building floor plan to be made public. For that reason, I’ve only included images and plan details of the precast concrete walls.

A fun, simple project that I was involved with was redesigning the facade of future apartment buildings. A residential developer in Columbia came to PWA seeking permit drawings for future apartments and aesthetic help on the current facade. My goal was to come up with multiple options for the apartment buildings without altering the foot print. I used AutoCAD and Sketch-Up to render three unique designs for the client.

Residential architecture and aesthetics is something I have always enjoyed. This house lacked a sense of curb appeal with the awkward front porch addition. I created multiple design variations but concluded on adding two additional dormers and lowering and extending porch. Since I was a student at the time, I created a set of design development drawings for a licensed architect in St. Louis to work from and create a signed and sealed construction set.

The project that I got most involved with during my internship at The Lawrence Group was Barnes Jewish Hospital’s Renovation of their Intensive Care Units inside their large patient tower. This project was broken into two parts - the 4400 Sick Intensive Care Unit and the 8400 - Medical Intensive Care Unit. Barnes was relocating their S.I.C.U. from the 8th floor to the 4th floor of the building. After they were finished moving, the construction for the 8400 unit began on the now vacant 8th floor. The S.I.C.U. was under construction during my internship so I was able to attend many construction meetings, go on site and experience the final walk throughs. We were able to use the 4th floor patient room layout and core design to build off of and recreate the needed layout for the M.I.C.U. I designed the layout for the staff lounge and pharmacy of the new M.I.C.U.

The dramatic entrance in the structure highlights the ‘athlete’ - which is what draws people in and showcases the University. The large sloping site located within KU’s campus allows for a lower walk out level that holds the ‘student.’ A passerby can relate to the student while walking along the lower windows that look into the classrooms. A plaza takes over the roof of the lowered student area and creates a unique space for people to gather before and after athletic events, as well as enjoy on the typical school day.

The media library and community center is located on the edge of downtown Columbia, Missouri. This was the thesis project for my undergraduate education at MU. The design was intended to create an inviting space for a library. The ‘open arms’ concept can be seen throughout the design process. The large courtyard can provide a new green space for people downtown to experience. The layout is efficient and easy to navigate through.

The new Child Development Lab’s Building was designed to fit in with the traditional “white campus” buildings on the University of Missouri’s campus, while still appear current. The classrooms are located along the perimeter of the outdoor play area to focus on the outdoors. The goal was to create an exciting place for the children, not only in the classrooms but also in the hallways. The hallway has unique nature-inspired experiences that allow the children to interact with their surroundings.

The restaurant ‘Simply’ was my solution to a design challenge to renovate an existing building restaurant located in Columbia, MO. The design possesses a relaxing, yet sophisticated atmosphere. The envisioned menu would serve ‘New American’ cuisine with locally grown produce prepared in a new unique way along with a large selection of wine. The L-shaped arrangement will create the most views towards the outdoors for customers. The interior materials included used brick (painted), reclaimed wood, recycled glass, etc. Black and beige will be the dominate colors, and soft, diluted colors will be the accent colors. Unique lighting made of recycled wine glasses and wine bottles will add to the atmosphere and theme.

BASEMENT REMODEL Personal Experience | 2014 In our spare time, my husband & I like to take on home renovation projects. The largest project we have tackled so far was gutting our small basement TV room & replacing everything. This allowed us to have a more efficient use of space in our small two bedroom house. I designed & created the plan of action while my husband did most of the labor. The built in TV cabinet is my favorite design element of the new space. By using ready-toassemble cabinets & woodwork we were able to create what looks like custom cabinets. We tore out the existing ‘bar’ & nestled the TV cabinet between the two columns.
