The universe seems neither benign nor hostile, merely indifferent.
I woke up today, from a lifelong dreamless sleep. Amongst a vast sea of black and the tiny pinpricks of stars, I saw the Earth. A blue marble, floating halfway in the light of the sun, the small purple moon its only companion. I should have been in awe... but I felt a fire. An anger, a resentment. The sight was sickening.

It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.
