Douglas became a forerunner for many young, and up and coming African-American artists during his time. He was also a member of the world-renowned Harlem Arts Guild. MayaAngelou an

American Great By S.L. M axw ell-Robles

Born Marguerite Annie Johnson on April 4, 1928 (she would later change her name), Maya Angelou's life was nothing short of amazing! Her list of accolades, awards, talents, skill, and achievements goes on, and on again. She was truly a National Treasure! Having had a rough start in life, her parents divorced when she was four, and by age 8 she had been sexually abused and raped by her mother 's boyfriend. The perpetrator, whom she called "Mr. Freeman", was found guilty of the crimes and spent one day in jail. Afterwards, Angelou's brother convinced her to tell who the man was who had did this to her. Four days later and after his release from jail, he was found dead. As a result, Angelou didn't speak for five years because she thought her voice had "killed a man". This traumatic experience would set the stage and later serve as a launching pad for who Angelou would later

become one of the most recognized and significant figures of our time. She was a literary and artistic giant in her own right, as well as a loud and resounding voice for both women and Black culture, alike. Angelou was a beyond masterful writer and shared a great part of her life story through her first book series. A set of seven, autobiographical books on her younger life and times with the first installation becoming highly acclaimed and widely successful. I am referring to her 1969 memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. It made literary history as the first non-fiction best seller from an African American woman. From her writings, to public speaking, to acting

in plays, television and film, to producing and directing, to her Civil Rights activism, Maya Angelou was the all encompassing Phenomenal Woman, just like her poem of the same name sake!

Bible Study By S.L. M axw ell-Robles With the impending holiday, the holiday it seems as if most of the world tarries and waits for, is Christmas. I must admit, I too wait in anticipation for this time of the year. But we must never forget the reason for the season, and his name is Jesus Christ. As a Christian and Black culturally-centered publication, we have stretched beyond the four walls to pay homage and to give recognition to those who have contributed to the plight of Blacks everywhere, while at the same time displaying their humility and sharing their God-

given talents and gifts with us. While spending time with family, buying and receiving gifts, as well as partaking in great holiday fare is memorable and fun, we also beseech you never to forget the reason for the season. We celebrate, honor and cherish the fact that our Savior was born. While December 25 may or may not be the exact day that Jesus was born, we are still fortunate to have a designated time during every year in which our full attention should be to give thanks not only for our families, friends, and sometime immeasurable blessings, but also for the greatest man that ever walked this earth! And, that's something to shout about! Scr ipt u r e Ref er en ce: Lu k e 2:11 "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

Sa bo t a g e An Original Story Series By S.L. M axw ell-Robles By now, one would think that Linda would have changed her mind, considering all the times that Charles dissed her when he saw her talking with Mark. "What Tom foolery is this?"she said out loud. Charles, Janice's landscaper, called off work today which meant that Linda would have to help her "tend" to the gardens. Linda didn't have time for the gardens today. All she actually wanted to do was go home and lay down after a long and strenuous day at work. She had seen tough

times at work before, but none like this, since her new boss had started. Linda had seen unusual bosses before, but none like this one. He seemed to have a different angle and a different style all together. She couldn't place her finger on it, but something was clearly not right with this guy or situation. "I mean, don't get me wrong" said Linda talking to Janice. "I think he's a nice guy and all, I just think there's something more to this whole story." "The way he looks when

"Oh yeah, by the way, what "That's it?", said Janice. did happen to Barbara, she "That's it", said Linda. was a nice lady", said Janice. "You know Barbara's team "I don't know. In fact, none of us know. All we know is that was performing really well, and she was next in line to receive she was here one day, then the 'Pie in the Sky' company suddenly gone the next...and that seems so unlike her ", said bonus. She had already landed to new Mercedes S12 Linda Series car, and the "Well, has anyone asked newly-remolded corner the new guy questions, or even office...and did I mention with tried contacting the a view?", said Linda. authorities?", said Janice. "Wow, it does sound like "Well, it all happened so maybe something a little fishy fast. "Yeah, I anyone passes by his office".

think everyone could clearly see that! You said her numbers were record-breaking since she joined the family business", said Janice. "Umm hmm, they were. She had recently shared with me that she wanted to go to college first, live her life a little, and get some more industry experience before she even thought about joining her dad's firm. She didn't want to have to deal with people thinking she was here because of nepotism or just here because of her dad with no real working knowledge or a track record", said Linda. "Good for her ", said Janice. "What I do know is that she had planned on making a huge announcement on tomorrow, but now she's not here!", said Linda. "Maybe you can call her dad to see if he has any information?"

said Janice. "I already tried. His voicemail box isn't picking up...because it's full", said Linda. "Wow, this is something. What about her cell or home phone numbers? Do you have either one and if so, have you tried to call? said Janice. "Yes I do, and yes I have...same thing. Her voicemail boxes are full. So I can't leave a message", said Linda. "So what's your step sweetie?", said Janice. "Well first and foremost, when I get out of here today, I'm going to gather all my information. Next, I may do a little investigating of my own...I do know where Barbara lives and parks her car. And third, I may call the outside authorities if need be. Just to make sure there was no foul play involved, you know", said Linda "Or do you mean sabotage" said Janice... To Be Con t in u ed...
