The Battle Of Marathon

The beginning

It all started on a day in September 490 BC on the Mediterranean Sea. An armada of 600 Persian ships were going to Greece. About 20,000 Persian soldiers, infantry, and cavalry were on a mission to invade Greece and spread more of them around the  world. They landed in the Bay of Marathon, 25 miles away from the capital of Greece, Athens. The Persian army had more men to fight with, but the Persians had underestimated the Greek Empire. It was the first time they went up against the Greeks. The Athenians took them by a route that gave them the upper hand. The Greeks killed around 6,000 Persians. The Persians killed around 200 Athenians.  So, the Battle of Marathon was a success for the Athenians.
