Ancient Greek Food

by Sam Craighead

The Story of Food The Ancient Greeks did not eat regular food like what we eat now. The Greeks ate eel, small birds, and locusts. The food that was the most strange was Black Soup or called Melas Zomos, which was made of Boiled pigs legs, blood, salt, and vinegar. That was eaten by the Spartans. The Greeks really didn’t use silverware but for some things they did use silverware for foods like soup in which they would use spoons to get broth, but they usually used bread to soak up the broth. The Greeks would also use knives to cut meat. The Greeks ate a lot of different but simple foods. They commonly ate bread which they would soak in either wine or olive oil which was considered a delicacy. They also ate a lot of fruits and vegetables like beans, cabbage, onions, and garlic. For fruits they’d eat figs, grapes, and apples. The Greeks would also sweeten their foods with honey, but they would mostly use the honey to sweeten and make desserts. So now you can see that the Greeks ate some pretty strange foods compared to what we eat now, could you imagine eating eel for dinner! Also don’t you think it’s pretty different to eat without silverware. The Greeks ate differently then us back then up til how we eat now
