Materials Used in Making Pottery The Ancient Greeks used clay for making pottery. The finest clay that they used was called Attic clay. Attic clay has a high iron content and that makes an orange-red color. After it was hardened the Greeks used black glaze to paint their pottery. Fired clay is very strong so pottery is the only thing that survived. The art made out of wood, textile or wall painting did not survive.
Pottery Design The Greeks painted wild animals on their pottery. They also painted monsters like the sphinx, siren, griffin, gorgon, and chimaera. Sometimes they painted lions.
