ANTIQUES & GARDEN SHOW O F NA S H V I L L E
LANDSCAPE of DESIGN 2016
FROM OUR SHOW CHAIRMEN
Elizabeth Coble
Amy Liz Riddick
Welcome to the 2016 Antiques and Garden Show of Nashville. We are excited to share the fabulous offerings of this 26th annual Show. Thanks to the dedication of previous Chairmen and the commitment of countless volunteers, we are proud to celebrate the “Landscape of Design.” Last year, when we began to discuss honorees for our Show, Bunny Williams, with all of her past support of the Show and international appeal, was kind enough to accept an invitation to be Honorary Chairman this year. In keeping with our theme, Gwyneth Paltrow, Shane Connolly, Louis Benech and an impressive list of A-list designers: Windsor Smith, Brian McCarthy, Suzanne Rheinstein, Mark D. Sikes, Brian Murphy, David Kleinberg and moderator Stacey Bewkes, graciously agreed to speak at the Show and support our efforts to raise funds for Cheekwood and ECON charities. This year’s line-up truly reflects the “landscape of design,” with a nod to the past, present and future. The Show also features four spectacular gardens designed by some of the Southeast’s most esteemed landscape designers. “Southern Root,” designed by Cheekwood; “Repos,” designed by Gavin Duke; “Garden of Mirrors,” designed by Phillipe Chadwick; and “High Cotton,” designed by Todd Breyer and Josiah Lockard, all present exciting and unique takes on “entertaining in the garden.” We also want to express our gratitude for the continued support from Andrew Byrd of TVV Capital, who has been our Presenting Sponsor for 26 years. We are thankful for the support of our corporate and media sponsors, golden benefactors, benefactors, patrons, A & G Board members, committee members, dealers, gardeners and the Nashville Community as a whole, as well. The Show is truly put on by the community, for the community, and we feel so honored to be a part this year. Thank you for coming and enjoy the Show!

ANDREW W. BYRD For more than 25 years, thousands of Middle Tennesseans and visitors have been “o-o-o-oing”-and-“a-a-a-a-h-ing” at the treasures and landscapes of the Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville. As the event has entered its third decade, one man who has been there since the beginning will again be there, a quiet but giant force behind the show. He may not always be in the spotlight, but his support to ensure its success always is present. Andrew Byrd knows much better than most the benefits a community gains from continuity in financial and volunteer support of fundraising events. He was chairman of the 1988 Nashville Lawn & Garden Show, one of the forerunners of the current event. The other preceding event was the Antiques Show at Nashville’s Cheekwood. The two events merged in 1989 and moved downtown to the then-new Nashville Convention Center. “The two, formerly separate shows merging into its current format was unique at that point in time,” Mr. Byrd says. “The result is a fantastic symbiotic relationship because the gardens provide such a great setting for the antiques. It is one of the most beautiful and successful shows of its type in the country. The success of our show is attributable in part to the visionary leadership the Antiques & Garden Show received in its startup phase.” But Mr. Byrd’s roots run much deeper than his initial involvement with the Lawn & Garden Show more than two decades ago. He is a past president of the Exchange Club of Nashville, a past chairman of the Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, a past president of the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee, and a founding member of the Economic Club of Nashville. The Economic Club charities and Cheekwood are beneficiaries of the proceeds from the event. In addition to his ties with the Antiques & Garden Show, Mr. Byrd, his father, and his wife have all held volunteer leadership positions at Cheekwood, a 55-acre botanical garden and art museum located on the historic Cheek estate in Nashville. Byrd said, “we believe in the show and its mission and what it contributes to our community. It is wonderful to live in a community where people possess that deep sense of service that binds us together. Nashville is a great city and it is important for Nashvillians to support institutions that help create a quality place to live. That is what this show really does — it helps make Nashville a beautiful place to live, year after year. It is our responsibility to maintain shows and programs like this in our community.” He added, “thank you to the Friends of Cheekwood and all the people who have worked so hard over the years. They have put so much time and effort into this event, and it continues to pay dividends for our community.”

SHANE CONNOLLY Born in Northern Ireland, Shane Connolly has had a lifelong interest in horticulture. After meeting the great British floral designer Michael Goulding OBE, his passion turned specifically to flowers. Under Michael’s direction Shane trained at the famous London Academy of Pulbrook & Gould and started his own business in 1989. He has an organic approach to his work, where flowers are used primarily for their own intrinsic qualities. Shane has developed a natural style, heralded for its elegance and originality. Shane’s international work has taken him as far as the United States, South Africa and India, while back in the U.K., he has decorated some the country’s most prestigious venues for an eclectic range of private and corporate clients. Alongside illustrious companies and individuals, Shane also counts London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts as two of his most valued clients, and he thoroughly enjoys the challenge of designing events around the ever changing and varied exhibitions in both venues. In 2005, he was honoured and delighted to be asked by HRH the Duchess of Cornwall to design her bouquet and all other flowers for her marriage to HRH Prince of Wales and the service of dedication in Windsor. The City of London requested that Shane arrange the flowers for a luncheon celebrating HM the Queen’s 80th birthday, and in 2007 he designed the flowers for the service of remembrance for Diana, Princess of Wales. In recognition of such events, Shane was awarded a Royal Warrant of Appointment to HRH the Prince of Wales, and went on to be appointed Artistic Director for the wedding of TRH’s the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011. Shane’s client list has been described by Harpers & Queen magazine as “enviable” and his discretion is legendary.

LOUIS BENECH Louis Benech, who has designed over 300 extraordinary gardens throughout his career, came to gardening and landscape architecture via a real love of plants. Louis was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine and as a child enjoyed running through his grandmother’s garden in Provence. After graduating with a degree in law, Benech decided to work in England as an agricultural worker for Hillier nurseries. He was then employed as a gardener for a private property in Normandy, before finally breaking into garden design in 1985. Benech’s fame rests on his talent for mixing French formalism with a more naturalistic English approach to planting. In 1990, Benech was commissioned with Pascal Cribier and François Roubaud to restore the ancient part of the Tuileries Gardens. Since then, he has worked on many established and historic gardens such as the Elysée Gardens and the Quai d’Orsay (both in Paris), Courson (south-east of Paris), Pavlovsk’s Rose Pavilion (St Petersburg), the Gardens of the Achilleion (Corfu), the main square of the National Archives in Paris, and many other international private commissions. He recently completed a renovation of the Water Theatre Grove at Palace of Versailles, the first new garden on the property since the 18th century.

Creating an atmosphere for reflection and escape is our intention throughout the space with the use of plant enclosure, shelter, and comfortable furnishings. Relax!

Gavin Duke was raised in the rural Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. At an early age, he began putting ideas on paper– sketches inspired by the natural beauty of the surrounding woodlands, the local craftsmen, and farmers. His passion to create has continued throughout his life. Now, he combines landscape architecture with other arts to design gardens and living environments for people, plants, and animals. Gavin Duke possesses a sensitive hand in working with landscapes and the talent for designing well-organized spaces. Thus, he has had the privilege to create many rewarding installations. He has traveled to remote corners of the world to gather ideas, and experience historic, traditional, and modern spaces. Deep understanding of the historical and contextual elements of landscape architecture allows his designs to preserve and respect each project’s site and architecture. His philosophy of landscape design is to create a seamless integration of the built environment and its surroundings. Duke’s work has been published in national and international publications. He received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 1987 from the University of Arkansas. Duke is licensed in Connecticut, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. pageduke.com Patrick McKennon has been in the lawn and landscape industry for over 30 years. Formally trained in the art of building fine furniture, cabinetry and boatbuilding, he developed his expertise as a craftsman. James settled in middle Tennessee in 1975 to pursue his passion of becoming a self-supporting artisan woodworker. Long before reclaimed lumber was trendy, James was incorporating old growth lumber salvaged from barns and house parts by repurposing these treasured materials into new structures. In 1987, James founded Vintage Millworks, Inc. James’ love of classical architecture, beautiful landscapes, garden design and the affect these works of art have on the human condition continue to inspire and guide his principles and his work. vintage-millworks.com Rozanne Jackson, voted ADAC Designer of the Year, leads one of the region’s preeminent full-service design firms and owns and operates The Iron Gate, a favorite spot for home furnishings and gifts among local Nashvillians and celebrities alike. 2016 GARDENS WEST GARDEN: PHILLIPE S. CHADWICK
GARDEN OF MIRRORS One hundred mirrors lining the corridor create an infinite reflection as your view seems to go on forever. The grand water towers acoustically attract your attention to the space. The antique crystal chandelier ceiling brings the space down to human scale with sparkling perfection. Along the edge of the walkway, delphiniums and iceland poppies bloom in vivid colors. A modern tribute to the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles. Phillipe Chadwick's flower designs are consistently show-stopping and vibrant, yet elegant and sentimental. His arrangements make any event meaningful and personal. He always gets people talking. He knows just the trick, because at his core, Phillipe is a catalog of knowledge about plants and flowers. His first love is gardening, and he has tended garden styles ranging from heirloom vegetable to Japanese. Phillipe Spencer Chadwick was born in Nashville and still lives there but he received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Mississippi State University in 2006. Then he started working as a Landscape Architect, managing civic designs for the city of Franklin, TN. But don’t judge a book by its cover. His extensive background in horticulture preempts his role as a floral designer. In 2009, Phillipe joined the ranks of Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art as a horticulturalist, and catapulted them to a new level of hip. He stressed keeping all designs provocative and cutting-edge but at the same time aesthetically pleasing. He breathed life into Cheekwood’s gardens, transforming them into lush scenes of texture and color. He adorned Cheekwood’s special events with fresh, bright flower arrangements. Then Phillipe decided he’d strike it on his own. Through a dense personal network, Phillipe Chadwick has established a strong reputation in Nashville for crafting memorable weddings and impressive visual spectacles for events. His resume includes The Antiques and Garden Show, the TPAC gala, and Chukkers for Charity. Occasionally he hosts Volunteer Gardener on NPT. Phillipe continues a tradition today. He gives every client close, one-on-one time and attention to decide how their magical ideas can literally be transformed into reality. Phillipe’s professional attitude is the epitome of class and style. Likewise, his designs never fail to impress.

Steve Tobin: Southern Roots FEBRUARY 20 – SEPTEMBER 4 (INDOOR EXHIBITION ENDS MAY 29) Cheekwood is proud to bring acclaimed sculptor Steve Tobin to Nashville with the debut of Southern Roots this February. The solo exhibition of monumental works spans five locations across the Cheekwood landscape and includes installations within the Museum of Art. In addition, one of Tobin’s Roots sculptures will be on exhibit in downtown Nashville’s Riverview Gardens at Riverfront Park as part of its partnership with Metro Parks. Visitors at this year’s Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville will get a first look at the sculpture as it is featured in the Entry Garden of this year’s Show. Southern Roots highlights the work from Tobin’s Steelroots sculptures, an evolution of his signature bronze Walking Roots series. In 2005, Tobin gained praise when his massive bronze “Trinity Root” sculpture was installed in the courtyard of St. Paul’s Church in New York City, becoming the first and only 9/11 memorial near Ground Zero. The piece was cast from the stump and roots of a large sycamore tree that shielded the church from the collapsing towers of the World Trade Center. Tobin’s work has been shown internationally at such venues as the American Museum of Natural History, United States Botanic Garden, Carpe Diem Gallery (Paris), the Page Museum/La Brea Tar Pits and Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, and is part of permanent collections at the American Craft Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, American Glass Museum and Musee des Arts Decoratifs (Switzerland).

WHO WE ARE The Economic Club of Nashville (ECON) provides a dynamic forum at weekly lunch meetings for business and community leaders to identify and discuss economic, social or political issues of special interest to Nashvillians. Members seek to interact with local businesses and government officials and support key nonprofit organizations that contribute to the quality of life in the Greater Nashville area. WHERE WE CAME FROM The ECON draws its history and tradition from the Exchange Club of Nashville. One of the largest clubs of the national organization, the Nashville Chapter was chartered in April 16, 1920, to support the national mission: “Exchange, America’s Premier Service Club, working to make our communities better places to live.” This mission resonates with members of the new club, which continues many of the existing initiatives. MOVING FORWARD The ECON will continue in its support of The Family Center as well as provide generous support to many charities in Nashville. In 2014, the ECON formed the Cultural Assistance Program (CAP) to provide opportunities for children and their families to participate in Nashville’s cultural and arts programs. Since 1991, the ECON and Cheekwood have co-sponsored the annual Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville. This show has become the Club’s main fundraising activity, allowing ECON Charities, Inc., to contribute more than $1.5 million to local charities.
A HISTORY OF SERVICE The Club has been instrumental in helping make Nashville the great city that it is today. The list of achievements in its early years includes: • Widening Church Street west of the viaduct and the extension of Ninth Avenue from Church Street to Union Station, without cost to the city of Nashville; • The increase of parking facilities at Union Station; • The beautification of Memorial Park opposite the state Capitol; • The first overall street marking program in Nashville; • Building children’s playgrounds at the Davidson County Tuberculosis Hospital; • Equipping the Vanderbilt band with its first uniforms; • Sponsoring the first successful fundraising campaign for the American Red Cross conducted in Nashville; and • Providing support for the public development of Cheekwood in 1960, transforming the private residence into a public garden and art museum. Today, the Club participates in programs to support NeedLink Nashville (formerly known as Big Brothers of Nashville), The Salvation Army, Cheekwood and The Family Center.

BENEFICIARIES The Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville combines spectacular garden spaces, fine antiques, and horticultural items into one outstanding three-day show. Located in the Music City Center in vibrant downtown Nashville, the show’s renowned design experts, fabulous gardens and more than 150 exhibitors make it the ultimate destination for new and ardent antique collectors, avid gardeners, those seeking design inspiration, and anyone who enjoys a breath of spring in the midst of winter. Over the past 25 years, the volunteer-managed show has raised more than $6 million for Cheekwood and ECON (Economic Club of Nashville) charities.
Cheekwood Cheekwood is Nashville’s beloved 55-acre estate, Botanical Garden and Museum of Art. It has just recently been awarded the honor of “Top 10 Best Public Gardens” in the USA Today Reader’s Choice awards. Cheekwood brings art, education and horticulture to hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, impacting our region by enhancing the lives of many through its Outreach and Educational Programs. Thousands of school children visit annually to experience the beauty of the relationship between art and horticulture and develop an appreciation for culture in their community.
ECON The Economic Club of Nashville (ECON) provides a dynamic forum at weekly lunch meetings for business and community leaders to identify and discuss economic, social or political issues of special interest to Nashvillians. Members seek to interact with local businesses and government officials and support key nonprofit organizations that contribute to the quality of life in the Greater Nashville area. The ECON will continue in its support of The Family Center as well as provide generous support to many charities in Nashville.
Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville Mission The Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville is an annual charity event whose purpose is to raise funds for Cheekwood and ECON, by exhibiting the highest quality antiques, landscaped gardens and horticultural items and by offering a related educational outreach program.
