FR OM THE BO A RD C HA IR Welcome to the 24th Antiques and Garden Show of Nashville! This year’s show marks two special milestones for us. We are pleased to welcome the Right Honorable Countess of Carnarvon as she kicks off her North American book tour here in Nashville. In addition, the Antiques and Garden Show of Nashville has moved to the gleaming new Music City Center. We are thrilled you are here with us and so grateful for your support. Since the Show’s beginnings in 1989, over $5.5 million has been raised for Cheekwood and local charities supported by the Economic Club of Nashville, and we look forward to continuing this tradition of giving. The Antiques and Garden Show of Nashville would not exist without the amazing team of hundreds of volunteers that make this event a success. Our 2014 Honorary Chairman, Charlotte Moss, and 2014 Chairs Mindy Jacoway and Vee Vee Scott have put together a stellar lineup that includes a keynote lecture by Lady Carnarvon, the Eighth Countess of Carnarvon and mistress of Highclere Castle, which is known to many as the location for the filming of Downton Abbey. We are also excited to present an outstanding design panel lecture that is moderated by Alexa Hampton and includes Mario Buatta, Nina Campbell and Jennifer Boles. Gardener Jon Carloftis teams up with the Canal House Cooks for the “Finer Things in Life” on Sunday. With a very special Bourbon Party on Friday evening and Music in the Gardens Saturday afternoon, a visit to the Show this year promises to delight all of the senses. With over 150 exhibitors, our sponsor TV V Capital and partnership with the Economic Club of Nashville, the Antiques and Garden Show of Nashville is the largest show of its kind in the United States including innovative garden designs, horticultural items and fine antiques.

With the brilliant success of Downton Abbey, the top-rated PBS drama that includes a number of beautiful antiques and gardens, we knew that Nashville would welcome Lady Carnarvon, the Eighth Countess of Carnarvon and mistress of Highclere Castle where Downton Abbey is filmed, and be delighted to have her speak at our Show. Lady Carnarvon’s appearance at our show is the launch of her North American book tour allowing our Show lecture guests to be the first in the country to meet her and we thank H.G. Hill Realty LLC for sponsoring this Keynote lecture. Presenting special events and choosing renowned experts to share their ideas and talents makes creating this Show so rewarding. This year brings together some of the world’s top design personalities: Charlotte Moss as our Honorary Chair, along with our Design Panel Lecture, sponsored by The Highboy, which will include Alexa Hampton, Mario Buatta, Nina Campbell and Jennifer Boles, sharing the stage in an unprecedented event. Whether you choose to stroll the gardens and enjoy music on Saturday afternoon, catch the Sunday “Finer Things in Life” Lecture with Jon Carloftis and Canal House Cooks, or choose a gorgeous antique object or a beautiful book, the Antiques and Garden Show of Nashville is truly a bright spot in our city’s winter calendar, and we are so happy to see you. ANDREW W. BYRD

For more than 20 years, thousands of Middle Tennesseans and visitors have been “o-o-o-o-ing”-and-“a-a-a-a-h-ing” at the treasures and landscapes of the Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville. As the event has entered its third decade, one man who has been there since the beginning will again be there, a quiet but giant force behind the show. He may not always be in the spotlight, but his support to ensure its success always is present. Andrew Byrd knows much better than most the benefits a community gains from continuity in financial and volunteer support of fundraising events. He was chairman of the 1988 Nashville Lawn & Garden Show, one of the forerunners of the current event. The other preceding event was the Antiques Show at Nashville’s Cheekwood. The two events merged in 1989 and moved downtown to the then-new Nashville Convention Center. “The two, formerly separate shows merging into its current format was unique at that point in time. The result is a fantastic symbiotic relationship because the gardens provide such a great setting for the antiques. It is one of the prettiest, most successful shows of its type in the country. The success of our show is attributable to the visionary leadership the Antique & Garden Show received in its startup phase,” Mr. Byrd says. But Mr. Byrd’s roots run much deeper than his initial involvement with the Lawn & Garden Show more than two decades ago. He is a past president of the Exchange Club of Nashville, a past chairman of the Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and a founding member of the Economic Club of Nashville. The Economic Club Charities and Cheekwood are beneficiaries of the proceeds from the event. In addition to his ties with the Antiques & Garden Show, Mr. Byrd, his father, and his wife have all held volunteer leadership positions at Cheekwood, a 55-acre botanical garden and art museum located on the historic Cheek estate in Nashville. Byrd said, “We believe in the show and its mission and what it contributes to our community. It is wonderful to live in a community where people possess that deep sense of service that binds us together. It is our responsibility to maintain shows and programs like this in our community.” He added, “Thank you to the Friends of Cheekwood and all the people who have worked so hard over the years. They have put so much time and effort into this event, and it continues to pay dividends for our community.”

“ Nashville is a great city and it is important for Nashvillians

to support institutions that help create a quality place to live. That is what this show really does — it helps make Nashville a beautiful place to live, year after year.

– Andrew W. Byrd, founder and president of TV V Capital, Show sponsor

Her newest book, Lady Catherine, The Earl and the Real Downton Abbey, is a follow-up to the international bestseller, Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey, and focuses on the remarkable American heiress who came to reign at Highclere Castle in the 1920s. It was released in the U.S. on Oct. 29, 2013. After an apprenticeship in the decorating department of B. Altman & Co., he became associated with several decorating firms including Elisabeth Draper, Inc. and then formed his own decorating company. 2 0 14 MARTIN SHALLENBERGER ARTI S T- I N- R E S I DE NC E

M ARCH 2 2 , 2014 - M A RC H 20 1 5 This spring, Cheekwood will be hosting Patrick Dougherty as its 2014 Martin Shallenberger Artist-in-Residence. During his residency, Dougherty will be constructing one of his large outdoor sculptures made from woven wood. Over the last two decades, the artist has installed more than 200 of his enormous sculptures in private and public spaces around the world. Aided by volunteers, the artist first harvests local saplings, including willow, elm, persimmon, or gum trees and brings them to the site by the truckload. He and his volunteers then create an armature of Ready or Not, 2013. NC Zoo, Asheboro, NC. Photo ©: Juan Villa saplings that evolves into a complex drawing of lines and hatch marks made with branches. The final result is a fairy-tale house that is also a three-dimensional drawing in space. In addition to the outdoor sculpture, Cheekwood will be presenting photographs of select Dougherty installations in the Courtyard Gallery (March 22 through June 29, 2014). Three of a Kind, 2013. Modern Twist: Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Art M ARCH 2 2 – M AY 25

This fascinating exhibition explores the innovative shape bamboo art has taken since the mid-twentieth century. With rare wall-hung installations and pieces never before seen in the United States, it both engages and educates audiences about a vibrant cultural art form. Bamboo is a quintessential part of Japanese culture, shaping the country’s social, artistic, and spiritual landscape. Although bamboo is an abundant natural resource, it is a challenging artistic medium with less than 100 professional bamboo artists in Japan today. Mastering the art form requires decades of meticulous practice learning how to harvest, split, and plait the bamboo. Modern Twist brings 17 of these artists to North American audiences, and their 38 works display a mastery of the supreme technical skills inherent in their innovative and imaginatively crafted sculptures.

Fifty years ago, during the summer of 1964, Andy Warhol began working on silkscreen paintings of flowers, a subject that would preoccupy him for the rest of his life. Best known for his vibrant pop imagery and searing commentary on art and popular culture, Warhol’s flower imagery reveals a softer, more intimate side of the artist. This exhibition traces Warhol’s engagement with floral images throughout his career, beginning with a group of his earliest commercial illustrations, drawn in the 1950s, and his creation of the Flowers series in 1964, to photographs, paintings, and screen prints through 1986 before his untimely death the following year. This exhibition is a rare occasion when Warhol’s artificial flower images meet the floral abundance of an actual garden.
