Giving kids what they need to thrive ... now and in the future
2014
How do you help a child thrive? Take a moment to think about what it truly means to thrive. For some, helping families in need means making sure they have the basics required for survival – food, shelter and clothing. But, if you really want to change lives, if you really want to help kids thrive, there is so much more these families need. Temporarily filling a child’s belly will help the child live, but giving a child a laptop so they can succeed in school, and go on to have a job that breaks the poverty cycle, is helping a child thrive. Giving a baby diapers is a fantastic way to keep them happy and healthy, but moving beyond diapers to make sure the same child has toys that will help develop their growing brain, is helping a child thrive. This is the EBC mission, and it’s the mission you make possible through your continued support. Thank you!

The EBC formula program - making sure babies get the nutrition they need
O
n a recent visit to EBC, Courtney Rayburn was picking up an emergency order of formula for a couple of teen mothers. She beamed as she shared the stories of a 16-year-old who was able to catch up on her studies after temporarily dropping out of school when her baby was born, and of a 17-year-old who was able to remain in school throughout her pregnancy and first
year of her child’s life. Courtney is an infant care specialist at the daycare center at Emerson High School in the Lake Washington School District. She cares for babies and children on campus (free of charge) so their young mothers are able to attend school. To see Courtney standing there, the cans of formula in her arms, it might have been difficult to appreciate the significance of a partnership between her organization, a small childcare provider and EBC, but as she told her stories of lives changed, the sense of purpose in the room was palpable. At EBC, local providers like Courtney are able to order from a list of more than 165 items for the families they serve; but, like the moms at Emerson, formula is one of the items most often requested. Formula is very expensive. On average, it costs $16 to $19 for a three day supply. Because of the high cost, struggling families are often tempted to water down the formula they are giving to their baby. Diluting the nutrition endangers healthy
development, which is why the formula program is so important. Each week about 30 individual orders for formula are filled. That’s on top of the bi-monthly orders filled for 11 area food banks. Each food bank receives 12 cans of formula every two weeks (along with baby food and diapers). Between the food banks and individuals, EBC gives out nearly 320 cans of formula each month. Mary Steele is the incredible volunteer responsible for formula. She keeps an inventory of the formula onhand, purchases new formula as necessary and prepares the orders for distribution each week. Mary has been in charge of formula at EBC since the very beginning. She has watched the need for formula grow exponentially in that time, and she’s helped EBC keep up with the demand, ensuring every family that orders formula gets the correct formula - tailored to the nutritional needs of their child. On the very day Courtney was in to pick up her emergency order, Mary

Formula program continued: was at the Hub dropping off 240 cans of formula (almost a month’s supply) she had just purchased. To have both the dedicated volunteer who makes sure no formula order goes unfilled, and the selfless service provider who uses formula to help change lives, at the Hub together made for a very powerful moment. The only piece missing that day was representation from the donors who
give formula, or money to purchase it. Individuals and groups often donate a few cans or host drives, where they collect a few dozen cans, but keeping up with demand requires purchasing formula as well. A portion of the funds used for formula come from gifts where the donor has not specified a use for their contribution – such as those made at the Helping Kids Thrive Annual Luncheon. Another portion
comes from donors who request their contributions be specifically used for formula. The Ellison Foundation and Young Family are two of those donors. In early 2014 they gave generously toward the purchase of formula. With a formula cost of nearly $4,400 per month, these funds mean the world to EBC volunteers and staff, and to providers like Courtney and the young moms they help.

While most of what we give to the children we support comes from donations from the community, much still needs to be purchased to make sure kids have ALL of the essentials. Your financial contributions make this possible. This Page: Agents from Windermere Eastside present EBC with a donation from the Windermere Foundation. The funds were raised by individual agents who contributed a portion of the proceeds from home sales to Windermere’s philanthropic program. Support In 2014 EBC participated in 9 Events including our very own Pants Party and Helping Kids
Thrive Annual Luncheon
5th Annual Pants Party In 2014, our 5th Annual Pants Party brought in 4,452 pairs of pants (surpassing our goal of 4,000)! Pants Party, the fun event with a funny name, is part family-fun carnival, part pants collection drive, and is designed to help to send kids back to school fully prepared. Last year’s Pants Party participants included Springfree Trampoline, KidsQuest Children’s Museum, Happy Family, Eastside Fire and Rescue and the Issaquah Police Department. The event was sponsored by AmericanWest Bank and Macaroni Kid Snoqualmie Valley-Issaquah.
5th Annual Helping Kids Thrive Luncheon Just over $230,000 was raised through the Helping Kids Thrive 5th Annual Luncheon, held November 14, 2014 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. The event with an “Engage Your Inner Hero” theme was attended by more than 700 guests. Keynote speaker, Benjamin De Haan, Ph.D., spoke on issues facing children living in poverty. The Luncheon Committee, chaired by Angela Kennedy, did outstanding work to grow EBC’s only fundraising event.

Our Mission: Eastside Baby Corner makes a positive difference in the lives of children and families in need. We do this by collecting and purchasing children’s items and distributing them, free of charge, through local social service agencies. We give families help and hope.
